Kidz to Adultz North Event City My First Experience of Andrea getting the BBUK stand ready with a little “elfs help ...
attending a Kidz to Adultz Exhibition Joanne Hoyle BBUK Specialist Nurse
I had the pleasure and privilege of attending the Kidz to Adultz North event at Event City in
Manchester in November. Where do I start?! The event was massive and as I walked in at 07.30am to the exhibition hall, I was instantly impressed and the day just continued to get better. First impressions was this exhibition hall looks so big will there be an atmosphere, this was soon answered when exhibitors arrived and set up a wide variety of informative and eye catching stands quickly followed by children, families, carers and health care professionals. The numbers were not small. The weather was dreadful outside very wet and windy, surprising for Manchester I know, but this did not deter attendees. The exhibition was so different from a normal healthcare exhibition. Many of the stands had equipment including walking frames, adapted shoes and clothing, sensory toys and as a lover of Labradors have to mention the guide dogs. Alongside this was entertainment for children and families including Father Christmas, Christmas card making stand and donkeys. Although I did not receive a present I did manage to look at and stroke the donkeys which was great.
A special celebration took place on the Disabled Living stand as part of the ongoing 120 years celebration of the charity with a nostalgic film made especially for the event plus cakes, always a bonus. The whole day was busy, exciting and extremely humbling. Meeting families that cope against all odds with all kinds of problems was really thought provoking and inspiring. Although my feet and body ached at the end of the day, and the next day, I am already looking forward to attending the next one.
BBUK.... Some Highlights from 2017 The beginning of the year is always a busy start for all the team at BBUK. Andrea, fresh from all her Christmas fun, getting straight back into the swing of sharing information with you all on social media and often is the first point of contact on our helpline, directing enquires through to the nurses in the team.
Many of you will know that 2017 is our birthday year, with Disabled Living celebrating 120 years of providing services and we will share more of the charities activities later.
February saw us say goodbye, but not farewell, to one of our valued nurse specialists, Carolyn who went onto new continence nurse adventures. The RCN sharing their on line continence resource, a valuable resource for registered nurses, nursing students, healthcare assistants (HCAs) and assistant practitioners working in any health care setting or specialism. March saw the launch of the new BBUK website, take an opportunity to view if you haven’t already . March is an important month in the BBUK calendar welcoming new and familiar delegates to the National Continence Symposium. This event continues to grow in strength and this year was no exception. We welcomed 150 delegates through the doors to this event, many who had travelled from all over the UK. We had a variety of high profile speakers covering a variety of topics and we are always thankful to all our speakers for supporting this annual national conference. Each year we offer three educational streams at the symposium, these being, Adult Bladder, Adult Bowel and Children and Young People Bladder and Bowel
This year the symposium had a wide offering of lectures covering Faecal incontinence and Evacuation Disorders, Managing Patients with functional Bowel Disorders, Pelvic Floor Assessment and Treatment in Bladder Incontinence, Wetting and Soiling in Schools - Who's Responsibility, Trial Without Catheter Project, Living with Mitrofanoff, Managing Skin Care of People with Bladder and Bowel Problems, Parents Perspective (living with a child that soils). The event also has an extensive exhibition running throughout the day and we are thankful to company representatives for their continued and valued support at BBUK events The bowel award winner is announced at the symposium, this year Helen Bremner was recognised as a worthy winner for her work with patients with IBS. A nurse hypnotherapist, with a colorectal/surgical background, Helen devised an IBS-specific generic hypnotherapy programme individualising for patientspecific problems. She has also created a training package for other professionals, enabling them to deliver her programme. This award by supported by Coloplast. The winner will share their work at the Symposium and Bowel Education Day.
Heading into spring, our Paediatric Continence Specialist, June Rogers MBE, was honoured to be invited to present at the joint ICCS/WCNR conference in Abu Dhabi. She presented papers on neuropathic bowel care - looking at bowel management from birth to adulthood and discussed the range of treatment options available. The conference was also a great opportunity to network with international colleagues, one of the highlights for June was meeting Dr Alberto Pena, who is a world renown surgeon regarding the treatment of children born with Ano-rectal malformations, and who is still practising at the age of 76 years
Our chief executive Debra Evans was delighted be invited to the ceremony for the Installation of Kui Man Gerry Yeung OBE, DL as The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. Gerry, has been Disabled Living’s President for the last 10 years and has brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our Management Board. Gerry was born in China and came to Manchester as a teenager with his family. He completed his education in the UK and joined the family business, Yang Sing Restaurant at its inception. The success of the restaurant and its great popularity gave him an opportunity to become part of the community of Manchester.
The team attended the Association for Continence Advice (ACA) Conference in Belfast. This was our first year, exhibiting at the conference under our new name of BBUK. We jointly run and present the “Look Good Feel Good Award” with ACA, which this year was awarded to Wellspect for their Navina Smart Irrigation System.
B Braun Emerald Prescription - Giving Something Back Campaign, offers a charitable donation to two chosen charities each year who they feel make a difference to peoples lives. This year, BBUK was chosen as one of their charities for this campaign
The end of May is World Bedwetting Day an important date in the calendar, with this year’s theme being ‘Time to take action’, to recognise that more can be done to raise awareness of bedwetting, for timely diagnosis and treatment. BBUK promoted this day throughout the month as well as ensuring that their Paediatric Special Interest Group were aware of the event and how to get promotional materials from Ferring which will run again next year .
Summer soon came upon us and Disabled Living had celebrations with a 1940’s tea dance for people with dementia and their carers. This nostalgic event was held at our Redbank House Facility and we created an environment to trigger memories. Our staff was dressed in clothing from the era and we provided live entertainment and a very nice afternoon tea! The event was an opportunity for relatives and carers to identify resources to support them. The event coincided with Health Information Week and we were delighted to have colleagues from the Alzheimer's Society to ensure our guests had up to date knowledge on the range of services available to support people with dementia. We welcomed representatives from Slater and Gordon who came along to provide people with advice about wills, trusts and mental capacity issues. In the summer, we also welcomed a new member of staff to the BBUK team, Joanne Hoyle who is an adult specialist nurse, who has worked in the continence fields for many years, both in the NHS and Industry.
Moving towards Autumn we look always look forward to our two annual education days – Specialist Bowel and Paediatric Continence Study Days These two individual days, brings together a variety of health care professionals including Nurses, Specialist Nurses, Pelvic Floor Specialist Physiotherapists Paediatric and Children’s Nurses . Delegates attended from the local NW area and some attended from further afield including Cumbria, Surrey, Worcester, Derby and North Wales and beyond. The aim of these days is to improve and support our standards of practice and knowledge and above all, continue (through learning and networking), enhance the care we deliver to the people we all see / come into contact with. These days are also by a number of companies who exhibit, providing information, advice and updates on their products. We are very grateful to the companies for supporting Bladder and Bowel UK education events and it allows mutual networking/updating between clinicians and commercial colleagues.

BBUK -” Raising Awareness of Toilet Training Children with Disabilities” Davina our Paediatric Continence Nurse has recently Uploaded a new blog on the BBUK Website “Toilet training is an area of normal child development that causes anxiety for many families. However, when a child has a disability it is an even bigger hurdle for parents and carers, although the children, particularly those with learning or sensory disabilities are not usually concerned. Often families are advised that they should not worry about toilet training until the child appears to be ready for this stage of learning. However, there is no clear definition of what is meant by ‘being ready’. There are some signs that are quoted, such as knowing when their nappy needs changing, asking to wear normal pants, or asking for the toilet. Children do not often reach this stage by themselves and many will not understand that they should be doing something different from what they have been doing since they were born. For many, signs of readiness for toilet training are not present until the children have actually started a toilet training programme”
