ACA Conference 2017 The Bladder and Bowel UK team attended the ACA conference in Northern Ireland. The conference was held at the Belfast Waterfront Centre and the theme of this year's programme was Continence without Borders. As many of you will know, this is an annual event, with members attending from across the UK. The educational programme was full of inspirational speakers and there was a wide and interesting variety of lectures, free papers to attend and posters on display to view. ACA members were informed they would be able to review presentations (where speakers have given permission) on the ACA website, under the member’s forum – ACA conference. It was good to see the large company exhibition, which provided a wide range of continence products, pharmaceuticals, devices and equipment, along with other charities and organisations . The exhibition is open to delegates for the duration of the conference. The exhibition provides us all, with a valuable opportunity to update our knowledge, gain new information, network with each other and talk to the companies about their latest developments and share in their wealth of knowledge about the product market. Its also an opportunity and be informed of new innovative products and practical solutions. Many health care professionals and company representatives visited us at the Bladder and Bowel UK stand, enquiring about our new look, new name and services. We were able to update on our helpline service and online resources. It was also an opportunity for us all to receive feedback and for us to catch up in person with familiar faces and new and friends. This year, we missed our product information co-ordinator Andrea being with us, as she was holidaying in Ibiza, however our Chief Executive , Debra Evans kindly stepped in to join the team and reprise her role from her days of working within the PromoCon team, catching up with ‘old’ ACA friends and colleagues too. The ACA conference provides us all with valuable networking opportunities and everyone in the continence arena is warm and friendly. We would encourage people if not already members, to join this wonderful organisation, which bring many additional benefits of local group support as well as national and local events.
Paediatric Continence Workshop – ACA Conference, Belfast For the third year running, a separate morning paediatric workshop was also offered to delegates. June Rogers and Davina Richardson Bladder and Bowel UK Nurses and ACA Executive members were delighted to be asked to speak at the Paediatric Morning, that was part of the Association for Continence Advice Annual Conference. June talked about constipation and learning difficulties and Davina about toilet training children with autism to a full room of delegates from across the United Kingdom with a few from much further afield. Other topics covered were NICE guidance, paediatric urology and development of a ‘Poo Passport’. The morning ended with a lively ‘ask the experts’ session where a wide range of topics were covered. It is hoped this workshop will continue to run at next years event in Bournemouth.

World Bedwetting Day Update The Third World Bedwetting Day was on 30th May with this year’s theme being ‘Time to take action’, to recognise that more can be done to raise awareness of bedwetting, for timely diagnosis and treatment. Bladder and Bowel UK were able to take information leaflets and stickers to the ACA conference and promoted the day to delegates at conference, as well as ensuring that their Special Interest Group were aware of the event and how to get promotional materials, which were distributed by Ferring. World Bedwetting Day is now an annual event, with the theme decided by an international committee of professionals and announced in the autumn for the following year. Next year’s date is 29th May and we will provide information about the theme and where and how to obtain materials towards the end of this year.
NICE update NICE Guideline for Childhood Constipation CG99 The NICE Guideline for Childhood Constipation has recently been reviewed and as there has been no major new evidence the key recommendations remain the same. By using ChiMat (using the link below) services can review their area to check how NICE compliant they are regarding the management of Children and Young people with constipation. ChiMat records a range of factors which help identify the health and wellbeing of the local population and benchmarks them against both national statistics and adjoining area. One of the areas ChiMat identifies is the number of Children and Young people admitted to hospital with constipation as well as the number of bed days they occupy. As NICE recommends the assessment and treatment of constipation should happen within the community then the number of affected Children admitted to hospital should be very low if not none at all. High numbers of Children admitted to secondary care with constipation would potentially reflect poor community care. http://atlas.chimat.org.uk/IAS/profiles/profile?profileId=45&geoTypeId If anyone would like more information regarding how they can carryout a continence needs assessment for their area or any other advice and support regarding their service then please do not hesitate to contact June or Davina at information@bladderandboweluk.co.uk
