The conference was held over three days with between 2-4 streams of education concurrently taking place. As this was the first time the conference was held as a joint venture between the UKCS and Pelvic Floor Society it led to more variety in specialist clinicians, topics covered and networking opportunities.

As you can see by the topics the sessions, were cutting edge, up to date research evidence based clinical information and practice promoting excellence in continence care with a real MDT approach.

The conference was really motivating as the speakers were high calibre and there was a “team” feel most of the time. The breaks and social occasions led to valuable networking time with old and new colleagues who have the continence passion understanding what is happening in the highly specialist areas of continence care in the NHS and beyond.

The conference was an intensely packed, with high-profile speakers from across the globe. It covered patient and carer perspectives of the realities of living with incontinence, the characteristics of those affected, the challenges of an aging population, the role of toileting and containment, outcome measures of care to competencies and panel discussions. The conference was presented with fourteen key performance indicators for effective toileting and containment strategies and asked to consider which three of these would be most relevant to their individual national settings and how these could be implemented.

The UK were well represented, so had three separate groups considering the KPIs, but all had similar views on the most relevant and on implementation. Many of the different countries agreed that a key issue is the number of staff with the skills to perform a continence assessment and prescribe a toileting and containment strategy. Documented assessment for people receiving pads and review of toileting and containment strategies as well as cost of admissions related to poor management were also high on UK delegates priority list. The challenge now is engaging on a wider national level to encourage implementation of these across the four nations.

The conference provided excellent opportunities to network with colleagues from within the UK and to learn from those working in countries with different approaches to health provision and management of incontinence.

Introducing a New Award Bladder and Bowel UK Enuresis Award 2018 Bladder and Bowel UK is delighted to announce the first ever Enuresis Award. The aim of the award is simply to recognise excellence in enuresis care with a prize of ÂŁ500!

World Bedwetting Day 2018 Bedwetting is now a recognised medical condition from aged 5 years. Studies have identified that left untreated bedwetting can have a serious detrimental effect on the child’s self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and day time functioning, including school and social performance. Also, the impact on the child and their family is often underestimated and trivialised.

The International Children’s Continence Society (ICCS) and the European Society for Paediatric Urology (ESPU) launched the first World Bedwetting Day (WBD) in 2015.

This year will be the fourth consecutive year that the day will be marked globally and it will take place on Tuesday, 29th May 2018. The initiative will continue to raise awareness among the public and healthcare professionals around this common medical condition.

Within the UK this years World Bedwetting Day will focus on empowering parents and is supported by information and resources on the website www.stopbedwetting.org

Bladder and Bowel UK also have a range of free downloadable resources that can help support both affected parent and children .
