BBUK - Children and Young People’s Education Day October 2017 Starting out as a local special interest group educational meeting, this event has been running for many years and is well established as one of the highlights of Bladder and Bowel UK’s annual calendar. Attendance has grown and, whilst the North West remains well represented amongst delegates, professionals now travel from a much wider area to participate. This year was no exception, with people welcomed from as far away as Oxford, Suffolk and Durham.

June Rogers opened the day with an update on nocturnal enuresis. There is a wealth of new literature and research on this common but troubling condition. June emphasised the heterogeneous nature of the problem and the high co morbidity between bedwetting, sleep disorders and psychological functioning. She outlined that research dictates the prolonged use of ‘bladder training’ as treatment is no longer recommended; that Desmopressin can improve sleep and therefore behaviour in children with nocturnal polyuria, even when it does not fully resolve the wetting; the fundamental role of early and comprehensive assessment to allow treatment to be tailored to the individual needs and preferences of the child and family and to reduce the negative psychological and emotional effects of the condition.

Summary of the Lectures on the BBUK Paediatric Education Day The meeting evaluated well by all who attended, both delegates and company representatives and was oversubscribed again this year. We would like to extend our thanks to our speakers, company colleagues and all who attended and made this such a successful event.

We would strongly recommend booking early to avoid disappointment! Please put this date in your diary Tuesday, 16th October 2018

Sheena Kennedy from Halton and St Helens, presented on their team’s award winning work on the use of play to teach intermittent selfcatheterisation (ISC) to children. Concentrating on fine motor skills, such as threading and sequencing games, helps identify when children have the dexterity and memory to be able to increase their independence, with respect to ISC. However, younger children in particular are likely to continue to need support with hand hygiene, fluid control and reminders to empty their bladders.

Sarah King from the Impress Network fed back on a children’s continence workshop that took place on 30th September at Thackary Museum, Leeds. Impress is a project from the University of Leeds where scientists and engineers try to solve problems caused by incontinence. The workshop was aimed at children aged 6-16 to find out how they feel about incontinence and to help them to express their ideas on how to solve the difficulties that incontinence causes them. We look forward to receiving more information about the findings from the day Sandra Hanson from Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust introduced a video for families explaining the use of macrogol laxatives to tackle constipation and soiling, which is available online at http://www.thepoonurses.uk; A presentation on the use of transanal irrigation in functional constipation from Davina Richardson and a discussion on resources that clinicians would like to see developed for World Bedwetting Day, which will be on 29 May 2018. There was also an excellent and diverse company exhibition and opportunities for delegates to network during breaks and lunchtime.

Disabled Living Supplier Directory The Directory has been created at the request of people who use Disabled Living as a resource, to identify companies or organisations who sell or provide equipment, products and services to support disabled children, adults and older people.

Access to the Supplier Directory is via the Disabled Living Website

Throughout 2016 we have consulted with a wide range of people who use Disabled Living’s Supplier Directory – professionals, service users, commercial colleagues and third sector organisations. They told us how much they valued the Supplier Directory, so we have made it easier to navigate and search for equipment, products and services. We have increased the number of words you can submit to describe your products and you can have separate wording for each category. You can list your equipment, products or services in up to five relevant categories.

Contact us to see how you can become part of our Supplier Directory.

Corporate Partnership We are keen to continue working with our existing partners, who kindly support us here at Bladder and Bowel UK but would also welcome discussions for new partnership opportunities.
