Newsletter September 2017 The Importance of Disseminating Information to your Service Users!

This blog is written by Jayne Watson, one of our Occupational Therapists.

Disabled Living host 5 of the largest exhibitions for children and young adults with disabilities and additional needs. The exhibitions are a great way of finding information on equipment relevant for the individual to remain as independent as possible throughout the different stages of their lives.

Not only do we look at equipment, but we also have a wide variety of funding organisations, mobility vehicles companies, solicitors, employment agencies, colleges and charitable organisations. There are also fun activities to occupy the children during the day, with a good variety of catering services available if feeling hungry.

Disabled Living Blogs - August This month Disabled Living has featured a range of topics on our blog. These include articles posted on Redbank House, Bladder and Bowel UK, and Kidz Exhibitions website.

We have a dedicated Inspirational Story of the Month and Lee Kingsberry caught our eye throughout August.

You can read how he inspires wheelchair users and creates a positive impact on how they can live their lives.

We’ve received a high volume of guest blogs from our Kidz to Adultz Scotland exhibitors including: Cerebra, Safespaces, Swan UK and Theraposture.

Other features have explored the benefits of colouring in for children, life with autism by guest blogger, Rebekah Gillian, and the importance of disseminating information to service users.

A Warm Welcome to Joanne Hoyle who Recently Joined the Bladder and Bowel UK Team!

I am delighted to have secured a role as Adult Specialist Nurse at BBUK. I have worked within the speciality of continence since 1999, with experience of developing and managing continence services and working in the healthcare industry at Paul Hartmann Ltd, as national Clinical Resource Manager.

I enjoy promoting continence to all through education and advice to healthcare professionals, individuals experiencing bladder and bowel problems and families involved in care. I am looking forward to developing professionally in this role, building on existing and developing new working relationships and undertaking new challenges.

NEW – National Mobility Registration Scheme - 2017 The National Federation of Shopmobility has launched a New Service.

The National Mobility Registration Scheme has grown out of the need for the public and the Police to be able to reunite stolen or abandoned mobility vehicles with their owners. Originally piloted by Littlehampton Shopmobility scheme working closely with Sussex Police, it soon became clear that a National Scheme was needed.

The National Federation of Shopmobility has been working on the website and scheme for the last two years and launched the new registration website on March 28th at the professional disability trade show Naidex.

Steve Perry (Marketing and Communications Manager) said; “We were amazed by the police statistics for 2015, that out of 517 mobility scooters stolen (with an estimated value of £615,000) only 22% were ever recovered. We understand the devastation the theft of a mobility vehicle can have on its owner with the loss of independence. We saw the scheme as way of helping to increase the numbers of vehicles returned to their owners working closely with the police nationally” The cost of registration is £12.00 per annum, which is not a large price to pay to help track your stolen mobility vehicle. Proceeds from the registration will be donated to National Federation of Shopmobility members nationwide. Shopmobility aids those with mobility impairments either permenant or temporary by hiring out mobility vehicles such as scooters and wheelchairs.

The National Federation of Shopmobility is located in Wellingborough and we have members across the UK, Ireland and the Channel Isles.

Salford University – Reducing Falls Risk with State of the Art Walking Frames Researchers at the University of Salford are working to improve walking frames. Walking frames are frequently given to people to help with support and movement, but there is little guidance on how to use them safely.

The team at Salford have developed a special, state-of-the-art walking frame. The frame has sensors which measure how balanced and stable a user is. They want to use this frame to improve frame prescription, training and ultimately reduce falls.

The team is looking for two groups of people. They are looking for professionals who are involved with walking frames, who could participate in a focus group that will discuss current problems and how to improve frames in the future. They are also looking for participants; older adults who use pick-up or front-wheeled frames, who would like to help.

They will be asked to walk short distances with the frame, either in their own home or at the university, and it only takes approximately 1 hour.

New App – Get Help at Petrol Stations!

fuelService is a new smartphone app to help drivers get assistance with filling up at petrol stations.

It enables people to book help in advance with participating garages and let assistants know which pump they're waiting at.

Drivers who don't use smartphones can use the fuelService website and book assistance by phone and text.
