Disabled Living provides a wide range of training courses for Health and Social Care Professionals. The team has an excellent reputation for delivering high quality training at cost effective prices. Training On Demand ‘Training on demand’ is designed to support our flexible approach to your training requirements. The training team are aware some courses are not as high in demand as others, although it is acknowledged there is a training need. The team intend to deliver a minimum of one of each of the following courses during 2018. Content: Do you understand the importance of carrying out a Manual Handling Risk Assessment? Is it part of your role to ensure the safe Moving and Handling of the people in your care? Do you feel you need specific training to be competent in your assessments? The 3 day Moving and Handling Risk Assessment course will ensure you are familiar with all the aspects of Risk Assessments of those with mobility needs, including the legal and physical assessment requirements. You will become familiar with techniques and devices that can be used to reduce risk when assisting those with mobility needs and be able to carry out and demonstrate these techniques to others. During the course you will have been required to carry out a complete Manual Handling Risk Assessment and will be able to translate this into a person specific handling plan. Moving and Handling People Training at your venue.
Do you need Moving and Handling training that is relevant to where you work?
Are you responsible for arranging Moving and Handling training for your staff?
How does your organisation ensure the high quality training of those who have received classroom training?
At Disabled Living we recognize that some organizations need bespoke training in their workplaces rather than in a classroom. We have adapted and developed our Moving and Handling training which can be tailor made to your own organization. The training includes a theory module which lasts around 2 hours and must be completed during each training course, and a practical module. The practical session is competency based learning. This means that methods relevant to your workplace will be demonstrated to delegates and they will then be individually observed performing these techniques. The delegates competency can be further assessed when they are then working with clients At the end of the training a certificate will be issued for all those achieving the desired level. For those who are identified as needing further training, their manager will be informed and further input can be arranged. A maximum of 9 delegates can be assessed in 1 day.

There is a practical problem solving approach, using equipment and techniques tailored for those working with Children, or for those assessing their Moving & Handling needs. Trusted Assessor Training (4 day) Dates:
10th, 17th, 24th, 31st January 2018 14th, 20th, 27th February, 6th March 2018 10th, 17th, 24th April, 1st May 2018 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th June 2018 3rd, 4th, 11th, 12th July 2018 13th, 20th, 27th September, 3rd October 2018 18th, 25th October, 1st, 8th November 2018 Time: 9.30am-4.00pm What is a Trusted Assessor? A ‘Trusted Assessor’, when trained, will be able to assess for and prescribe a simple solution or a basic piece of equipment to meet the needs of an individual. It is the Government’s vision that this will alleviate both Occupational Therapists’ time and also waiting lists. Disabled Living has worked hard to tailor our training to meet individual job roles - this could be, amongst others, Driver Fitters, OT Assistants, Retailers and Housing Associations. The course consists of four modules. To become a ‘Trusted Assessor’ with Open Awards Accreditation at Level 2 all four modules must be completed. Each Module requires attendance for 6 hours per training day, together with 4 hours workplace/home study. Participants are assessed and this award is accredited by the Open Awards. Please turn over for the four modules we offer within the Trusted Assessor Framework. Target Group: This course is for anyone who is or will be assessing for low level equipment for Adults. All four modules must be completed for those assessing and prescribing solutions, Minor Adaptations or Assistive Technology. Trusted Assessor Module 1: Safety Issues in the Provision and Fitting of Basic Equipment Content: Effective communication Provides an overview of how we communicate with each other, looking not only at words, but underlying meanings, facial expression and body language. Whilst identifying problems that may occur when there are communication difficulties due to disability. Understanding and identifying boundaries Everyone has boundaries. Where are yours and how do you recognise them? What knowledge do you have of who you can call upon when you reach your boundaries? This is an interactive session. Person-Centred thinking Considers holistic person centred assessments and looks at what Independence means to the client. We will look at the whole person and consider things such as priorities and preferences, likes and dislikes, lifestyle, family situations and environmental considerations. Risks in the Bathroom Makes us think about what possible problems there can be in a room as commonplace as a bathroom. Perhaps getting into the bath, when living alone, is not as safe as we think. We look at physical problems, cognitive awareness, lack of sensation, environmental factors and family requirements. Practical Sessions Will start to look at assessment of the client, the carer and the environment. We will focus on when and what to supply and look at what we can do when “the usual� will not work. We will compare and contrast different solutions and get an overview of how things fit. Even staff who will not fit equipment in the future need to know what they are asking for with regard to the correct piece of assistive technology in a particular situation. What your Driver/Fitter needs to know Was put together by driver/fitters who sometimes find that what they are asked to deliver is in fact not suited to the particular situation in hand. Trusted Assessor Module 2: Assessing Competently and Confidently Content: Transforming Community Equipment Services Looking at the reasons behind the Government wanting to change how a person gets the help they need. What is independent living? Evaluating what the Trusted Assessor role is. Assessments Exploring more deeply the problems being experienced by a person, not assuming they need a piece of equipment. We need to consider issues such as physical problems and struggling to get out of a chair. Would this also have an impact on the ability of a person to get on and off the toilet? Person-Centred Practice A Practical session that looks at pre-judgements and using individuality to overcome such issues. Using the Trusted Assessor Model to enhance a person centred approach and looking at all aspects of the client’s life e.g. leisure, social. Task Analysis Breaking down the activities of daily life to ascertain the needs of a person in order to function with or without equipment.. Time and Motion Practical sessions which look at a person with needs. Does use of equipment fulfil these needs or can the issue be addressed differently? Trusted Assessor - Module 3: The Environment and How Minor Adaptations can Assist with Independence Content: Disability Awareness Discussion is set in the context of the Medical and Social Models of Disability. The origin of the “negative” connotations of certain words is explored. Appropriate communication and etiquette is discussed. This session ends with a powerful video which confronts common stereotypes of Disability. Access Issues Attention is drawn to four main “areas” of Disability which include mobility, visual, hearing and mental health/learning Disability. Delegates complete a simple audit of the venue and are tested in a Picture Quiz. Legislation and Regulations conclude this section. Person-Centred Assessment Delegates, working individually, perform a Basic Task Analysis, assessing the risks of tasks and activities and consider the specific needs of Disabled People. Scenarios Delegates whilst working in groups consider adaptations in real life situations (actual bathroom, shower, toilet etc in the venue itself) and report back to the rest of the course members. Trusted Assessor - Module 4: Living with Disability Content: Effective Communication and Experimental Learning Delegates work in groups to develop and rehearse skills used to communicate effectively with others who may have a range of sensory, physical or cognitive needs. Listening and learning styles are examined through practical activities. Delegates finish by applying this information to a working scenario of equipment issue. Functional Ability and Impairments Delegates work independently to identify what constitutes functional ability, looking at activities of daily living and relating them to motor, sensory and cognitive skills. Delegates examine the impact of a variety of functional impairments and consider how assistive technology may help to overcome these. Person Centred Assessments Delegates will review detailed written personal accounts to identify a range of priorities in different circumstances. Reasoned Solutions Delegates work in small groups to propose solutions relating to people with various Disabilities. These focus on the most common difficulties that service users may experience. The delegates identify a range of possible solutions, along with the necessary clinical reasoning for each one. Case Study (Homework) Delegates complete an assessment of a service user, to include the difficulties and priorities identified and giving the reasoning behind the interventions agreed. Trusted Assessor (Children and Young People) Dates:

A ‘Trusted Assessor’, when trained, will be able to assess for and prescribe a simple solution or a basic piece of equipment to meet the needs of an individual. It is the Government’s vision that this will alleviate both Occupational Therapists’ time and also waiting lists. Disabled Living has worked hard to tailor our training to meet individual job roles - this could be, amongst others, Therapy Assistants, Support Workers, Assistant Practitioners, Teaching Assistants and all those involved in supplying and fitting low level equipment for Children and Young People. The course consists of four modules. To become a ‘Trusted Assessor’ with Open Awards Accreditation at Level 2 all four modules must be completed. Content: Module 1: Medical Conditions and Functional Assessment Module 2: Technical Applications Module 3: Implications of Assistive Technology Created in response to the current Government agenda suggesting that Older and Disabled People are currently waiting unacceptable lengths of time for equipment, which would allow them to live independently at home for longer. The course will enable various social care, health and housing workers to extend their skills when conducting complex assessments. This course is accredited through Open Awards at level 3 and the content of the four days are covered as follows:Day 1: An insight into some common medical conditions and how they affect an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks. Day 2: Continuing medical conditions including an in-depth look at stair-lifts and the risks and regulations surrounding their use. Day 3: Elements of relevant Disability Awareness, basic mathematical techniques required for ramp assessment (gradients) and planning wet rooms (floor plans, scale diagrams, turning space). Day 4: The use of mathematical techniques to plan and analyse real life ramp and wet room requests, together with relevant practical issues to ensure a speedy service and client satisfaction. Access Audits Do you and your organisation meet the needs of everyone who is using your building? Does it involve me? If you have a building that people access then yes it will involve you. The Equality Act 2010 states it is illegal to discriminate against a disabled person for reasons related to his or her disability. Employers, service providers and education providers must make reasonable adjustments to avoid discrimination. Do I need to do an access Audit? Yes. If you have a building that people need to access. You need to be able to show you have made a reasonable attempt to meet the needs of everyone using your building. You are obliged to look at any barriers and if at all reasonable to adopt measures to overcome them so that disabled people can use your building safely without being discriminated against. What are you looking at in the audit? The auditor will be looking at different aspects concerning your building and how a disabled person may be affected by them . Things like entrances, lifts, stairs, corridors, toilets, car parking facilities and ways to escape in an emergency. The Auditor My name is Chris Cammiss and I perform all of our Access Audits. I’ve been a permanent wheelchair user for most of my life and have gained a wealth of relevant experience over many years in education, employment, leisure and travel. Audits will be tailored to suit the needs and budget of the client. I have carried out Audits on a very diverse range of buildings from houses to tower blocks, museums to churches, sports stadiums to hospitals. An Audit could be as simple as a short “walk-through” suggesting quick fixes backed up by a short report, right up to a major study involving Building Regulations. The Complete Beginner's Guide to Moving and Handling at Work 43
Are you really a complete beginner? That’s the first question to ask. You have been lifting things since you first picked your toys off the floor as a toddler so chances are you know there is a right and wrong way to do it. Let’s just imagine you are a toddler again, how did you pick up Barbie or Ken?
I’m not going to go into the scientific knowledge of development for children because I doubt you would read any further but I know one thing. You bent your knees to get down to the floor where your toy was and once you had a good grasp of it you hugged it close to you. Does this sound familiar when you are in a Moving and Handling training session? Think safe principles folks! So what does a ‘beginner’ need to know about Moving and Handling? Well I think as a beginner you need to know why you need training: why are there regulations and specific guidelines all about Moving and Handling. Health and Safety is the answer, before Moving and Handling training came there were many injuries in the nursing / healthcare profession.
‘Just doing our job’ If you were in practice before the Manual Handling Operations Regulations came into force in 1992 you will be very aware of the techniques which were used and passed on to new staff. The techniques we now deem as controversial were commonplace, the drag techniques for helping people to stand up was the technique of choice and full manual lifting techniques such as the top and tail or the Australian lift were considered the norm and used everyday repeatedly. I remember the day I was taught the Australian lift by a Physiotherapist at Charing Cross Hospital in London! I thought it was the best thing I had ever learned and proceeded to use the manoeuvre to shift large post operative men up the bed.
We used these and other techniques for many years and in hindsight it was all the controversial lifts we used repeatedly that have resulted in the back pain I feel regularly, I never had an ‘incident’ or specific injury that I can blame for the years of back ache but the cumulative effects of so many years of manual lifting and ‘just doing our job’
The cost of such injuries wasn’t limited to nurses and carers, workforces throughout the country were 44 feeling the strain of litigation claims, sickness days due to back pain through the roof and the related problems this caused. So the Manual Handling Regulations were introduced. Injuries still happen but now we have a means to ensure we are trying to protect ourselves and our patients from injury which can be life changing. According to the regulations all of us not just beginners need to know how to avoid hazardous moving and handling and those words you have heard ‘so far is as reasonably practicable’ It’s not actually possible to avoid risk sometimes though so the regulations then suggest we Assess the situation, they give us a great way to look at all the factors which we must consider when assessing the risk. It’s TILEO I am talking about here. After we have done this fabulous assessment we then need to use it to reduce the risks to ourselves and our customer when it comes to Moving and Handling so whether it means using a specific technique or a piece of equipment which would enable the movement to be done in a safer way for all we need to introduce this properly. How do we know it’s all been worth it? It’s all very well obtaining equipment but does it work, have we achieved what we set out to do, has our customer moved where they need to go and have we done it in the least risky way to ourselves and them? We review our assessments after any introduction of something different and if things changed, it’s not just a review once a year if it’s needed or not!! The Regulations also tell us all about the responsibilities we have as employees as well as our employers, you can’t just turn up at work and do your own thing, (although some people may think this) This basically means it tells our employers and employees what they are expected to do in the workplace when it comes to Moving and Handling, you will learn all this in the training that you need, the reasons for which we are discussing at the moment. So we need training to make sure we have a knowledge about the regulations in place to keep us Safe when Moving and Handling at work. We also need regular training to keep us up to date with new/different techniques, to stop bad habits creeping in and to give everybody the confidence to question and reflect how they are working. We all want to enjoy our jobs and if we can do it well and keep safe we can work in en efficient well run team that doesn’t go off sick with bad backs. Do I live in an ideal world, I’d like to. It’s difficult to get motivated sometimes, it’s hard to introduce change where it’s not welcomed by people who have always done things their way but training is the future, it’s how we all get better so come on lets learn something new.

Thank you to Chris, our Disability Trainer and Advisor for writing this post about understanding parenting with a disability. I’m a wheelchair user who can’t walk at all and have been since I was 7-years-old when I caught polio. But very early on in adulthood I knew I wanted kids. I hadn’t thought it all through then but the thought was always there. I graduated and started to work (as a school teacher), and eventually got married. By this time I was very confident of what I could and couldn’t do in work, at home, around town, on holiday and so on. But the prospect of bringing up children was something else entirely. I had concerns in 3 areas:
Could I physically manage? Stairs, transport, carrying baby etc
What would other people think? “Is he able to manage?”
What came later – how would my growing kids view me? “All my friends Dads are playing football with them…” Read more

Course Booking Information How to book To secure a place on any of our training days, please ring 0161 607 8209 to check availability. In all instances a booking form must be fully completed and returned with payment. Once the booking form and details of payment have been received we will reserve a place on the requested training course and forward confirmation details. Payment can be made by Purchase Order, Cash or Cheque. If paying by Purchase Order the Purchase Order number along with the Invoicing department name and full address must be included on the booking form. If paying by cheque or cash, this must also accompany the booking form. Please make cheques payable to: ‘Disabled Living (Training & Exhibitions Ltd)’. N.B. All bookings under £50 must be accompanied by cash or cheque payment. Invoices cannot be issued in this instance. Cancellation Details Disabled Living reserves the right to cancel any training due to unforeseen circumstances.
