This was the prototype DTS Digital Surround (Coherent Acoustics) decoder made for DTS to demonstrate the system to reviewers and companies. The encoding/decoding system was invented by Algorithmic Technology and called "ARTEC" - DTS was looking for a digital coding system to use for home releases and the ARTEC system fit the bill perfectly. The ARTEC inventors were also the inventors of the APT-X100 coder that is used in the DTS-6 system used in movie theaters.
