Come and explore its beautiful Cathedral City, small villages, historic attractions, award winning parks and gardens as well as the many boutique shops and cafes throughout the District. Chichester itself is a walled City built by the Romans after their invasion in 43AD. The walls remain largely intact and with the Walls Walk you can take a leisurely stroll around the entire City, passing Bishops Palace Gardens, the Cathedral, the main shopping centre, Jubilee Gardens and the quieter corners of the City. Come off the Walls Walk and explore our cafes, restaurants and coffee shops which offer local food cooked by award winning chefs in a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. There are always events happening in the City; music festivals, local speciality markets (Farmers, Crafts and a Garden market), street entertainment, parades and fairs. The award winning and world renowned Chichester Festival Theatre and Pallant House Gallery are within easy reach of the Cathedral as are a host of other attractions including the new Novium Museum, where you can discover intriguing local stories connected with extraordinary artefacts including the Roman baths. Within a five minute drive from the City you can learn more about Chichester’s Roman past at Fishbourne

Roman Palace or come right up-to-date and find out about the night’s sky at the South Downs Planetarium. Hidden within the City, off East Street, is the Oxmarket Gallery, hosting fabulous art and sculpture exhibitions in an old atmospheric church. The pavement here is made from old tomb stones! The Canal at the end of South Street, is an unexpected treat as the canal runs from the City down to the village of Hunston. You can walk, canoe or take a barge down the canal, and follow the towpath all the way to Chichester marina. Guildhall is the centre piece in Priory Park, home of bowls and cricket and this is next door to Jubilee Park. You can visit the Almhouses in St Martins and see their beautiful gardens by appointment. There are lots of little side streets and twittens but you cannot get lost as every twist and turn brings you back to the four main streets.

Travelling north of the City takes you to the rolling hills and chalk landscapes of the South Downs National Park, with its breathtaking views which stretch for miles. Nestled amongst the views you will find plenty of specialist museums (Tangmere Aviation Museum and Weald and Downland Museum) and art collections (Cass Sculpture), West Dean Gardens and stately homes (Uppark, Petworth and Goodwood). Travel to the west of the City for Chichester’s fourth stately home, Stansted House and Park. Amongst the villages and countryside at the foot of the downs you will find many beautiful sights, including Petworth House, the magnificent country house and park with an internationally important art collection. The town of Petworth, with its origins in the medieval times is a thriving town full of winding lanes and quaint old buildings, most noted as a prominent centre for antiques and objets d’art. Petworth is the only town left outside of London with as many as 37 arts and antiques dealers within a half mile radius! To the east is the bustling market town of Midhurst which exhibits architecture from throughout the ages. When HG Wells lived here, he wrote many of his stories
10

using locations and backdrops from the town. The local shops now replace original Saxon market stalls, the old fashioned houses, thatched roofs and amazing architecture are abundant and trying out the local cream teas is a must! English Heritage described Midhurst as a “hidden jewel” and it is characterised by its independent gift shops and one-off boutiques. To the north east of the City is the world-famous Goodwood Estate, home to motor events (Goodwood Revival and The Festival of Speed), horse racing, including Glorious Goodwood, an event on the Season’s calendar, and Goodwood House, home to the Earl and Countess of March. All of this is set against the backdrop of the South Downs National Park, where smaller villages encompass a slower pace of life with their picturesque buildings, wildlife, and unique shops and tea rooms.

Exploring to the south of the City takes you to the coastal areas of Chichester. Selsey is a small town, locally still called a village because of its slower lifestyle. The main high street is where you will find small gift shops, local produce and coffee shops, but Selsey is best known for it’s fishing history, so take a wander down to the beach for freshly caught cockles, mussels and crab. Sandy beaches that stretch for miles at low tide complete with multi coloured beach huts amidst the dunes are found at the Witterings. Lifeguards are on duty in the summer months giving you and your family a safe and relaxing traditional break by the sea, while local amenities, restaurants and pubs serve the finest delicacies. Chichester Harbour offers some of the best sea views of the South Coast. Rare plant, bird and animal life co-exist here with the boats and yachts at this busy marina. Specialist guided boat tours will ensure that you make the most of the Harbour and its inhabitants. The Marina restaurant with its glass balcony offers high quality food with a view to match. On a sunny day, with the masts and bells jingling in the breeze, you could quite well believe you have left England and gone to the South of France.
