A warm
Welcome
Chichester promises to be an unforgettable experience just waiting to be explored. The area offers visitors the opportunity to discover the City, the South Downs National Park and a remarkable coastline, all within easy driving distance. The city of Chichester was built by the Romans after their invasion in AD43. It proudly blends two thousand years of heritage with a lively and contemporary lifestyle, where the arts, fine restaurants and cafĂŠ culture abound. Chichester thrives as a vibrant city and county town of West Sussex, providing a compact and cosmopolitan city of medieval layout. There is music, dance and theatre throughout
the year; with festivities and entertainment ranging from the exciting programme at the Chichester Festival Theatre, this year celebrating its 50th anniversary, to the annual Chichester Festivities which takes place 24 June to 14 July. National events will be celebrated with the HM the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee inspiring the summer exhibition at Goodwood House and the Olympic torch passing through the area on Monday 16 July 2012.
Explore the
Chichester area
Chichester is the largest district in the county of West Sussex stretching northwards from Selsey, the Witterings and one Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Chichester Harbour to another, the South Downs National Park with the market towns of Midhurst and Petworth. There are miles of stunning countryside and coastline waiting to enjoy.
Getting Here
Chichester is on the main London to Victoria line which takes approximately 1½ hours and also provides easy access from the rest of the South Coast. Nearby the Bus Station operates regular services and links up with most local bus networks. Additionally National Express passengers can alight at the Bus Station.

The Chichester City and District Tourist Guides operate tours from Chichester Tourist Information Centre - April to September on Tuesdays at 11am and Saturdays 2pm and November to March on Saturdays at 2pm.
By road, with established routes from the East and West, the opening of the Hindhead tunnel makes it easy to access Chichester from Guildford and London to the North.
Culture and the arts sit at the heart of Chichester’s rich history and continue to inspire audiences and delight visitors and residents alike.

Chichester City
‘New Market of the Proud People’. Filled with past and present treasures, there is history on every corner. Built in 1076 and completed under Bishop Luffa in 1108, Chichester’s magnificent cathedral, with its fine Norman arches, 12th century architecture and remarkable collection of modern art is a great landmark from which to start your journey. The Roman walls around the city are in fact medieval, but built upon the Roman foundations, and enable visitors to explore the city’s long history on foot (about 2½ kilometres).
Coast
villages, privately-owned country estates, open heath and common land, no visit to Chichester would be complete without visiting the South Downs. Rooted in the ‘Golden Triangle’ of the South Downs landscape are the historic market towns of Midhurst and Petworth. The vibrant market town of Midhurst dates back to medieval times and exhibits architectural features from throughout the ages. Midhurst’s famous past resident, HG Wells, is known to have set many of his stories in the town such as The Invisible Man and Tono–Bungay.
Known at Doomsday as ‘Peteorde’, Petworth can trace its origins back to medieval times. Its winding lanes and quaint old buildings give the impression that time has stood still. Yet nothing could be further from the truth, for Petworth, whilst maintaining all the charm of South Downs the past, is a thriving town Encompassing the National notable as a prominent Park, quintessentially English centre for antiques.
On the coast, there’s something for every mood; the ‘yachtie’ haven of Chichester Harbour; the wild, windswept beauty of East Head’s sand dunes; the classic English seaside at Selsey offering sailing, fishing and diving and the boho surfer vibe of The Witterings.

Shopping in and around
Chichester
Chichester and its district offer unique and exciting experiences for any serious shopper. Whether you are searching for a stylish outfit for a special occasion or decorative items for the home, Chichester has it all.
Chichester City
The 16th Century ornate Tudor Market Cross once housed the local market where poor people could sell and buy produce. At the centre of the city’s four main Georgian ‘high’ streets, it now provides a focal point and resting spot for busy shoppers. From here go north, south, east or west and you’ll find a cosmopolitan mix of boutiques, high street shops, pavement cafés and ‘let’s do lunch’ restaurants. East Street offers familiar high street names mixed with high end retailers, North Street boasts an extraordinary mix of jewellery stores and luxury lifestyle shops whilst South Street bustles with 6
w w w.visitchichester.org
an array of restaurants, cafés and cosy pubs and West Street is a hot spot for fashionable beauty salons and hair stylists. Explore the surrounding ‘pallants’ with their elegant Georgian houses and uncover Little London Walk, Baffins Court, Cathedral Courtyard and the Boardwalk, havens of individual and distinctive shops. A five-minute walk from the city will lead you to Chichester Gate, which is a modern complex of bars, restaurants, a cinema and bowling alley.
Petworth
Petworth is a perfectly preserved market town nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park and is a special place
at any time of the year. Petworth is a treasure trove of independent retailers, cafés, restaurants and accommodation. Presenting the finest selection of antiques and objets d’art, Petworth is the only town left in the UK outside London with 37 arts and antiques dealers all within a half mile radius.
Midhurst
In medieval times, Midhurst’s original Saxon market stalls were replaced by permanent shops. The apparently haphazard street plan and narrow lanes are relics of the gradual development into a bustling market town. Described by English Heritage as a ‘hidden jewel’, Midhurst is characterised by its myriad of independent shops and one-off boutiques.
Parking
All car parks in Chichester are within easy walking distance of the City Centre. There are 10 Short Stay ones and five Long Stay ones, as well as a Coach and Lorry park. There is also On Street Voucher Parking. Vouchers can be obtained from
a wide variety of outlets throughout Chichester City Centre - look out for the signs in shop windows. There are also two car parks in Midhurst, two car parks in Petworth, and both Selsey and Bosham have a car park. These are all operated by Chichester District Council. For information regarding parking for people with disabilities, car park charges and maps, please go to www.chichester.gov.uk Parking facilities are also available at West Wittering (operated independently).
