the first English fortress in India in 1644 that led to niore settlements and development of a city much later. The East India Company had first purchased a piece of coastal land (for strengthening their business) called channapatnam from a Vijayanagar chieftain Damerla Chennapa Nayaka. The area (where the fort was built) known as George town then grew to become a commercial hotspot called Madras. It is widely believed that it was on August 22, 1639 that the sale was done, hence the day is celebrated as Madras day every year. The fort now houses the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly among others.
