Crafting Copper Once upon a time, it was quite common to find copper utensils in Indian kitchen. And now, copper vessels have been given a fresh lease of life in modem kitchen, thanks to companies like Zishta who revive traditional fare.

The Tambat community of Maharashtra have unique skills honed over centuries to work with such Copper and brass metals. Their history dates back to the times of Shivaji Maharaj. These artisans were known to work with special metals in crafting swords, shields, armors etc for the army and also diversified into making kitchen utensils (like betel nut boxes, water pots, rolling pin etc) in copper for the royal family.

The process starts with making of a mould and making the rough product and processing the same. This process is a crafts secret which is shared only within the Tambat community. The rough products are hand worked for 3-4 hours with a finely balanced hand hammer beat on the surface to provide the unique craftsmen signature. Currently, the 7th generation artisans from the Tambat community are creating crafts from copper & brass. With research proving that water in copper bottles have anti-bacterial properties, now might be a good time to bring back this traditional treasure.

I f you are in Tamil Nadu around this time of the year, you cannot miss this traditional harvestfestival - Pongal. Thefestival is primarily a thanksgivingfestival to the Sun and is celebrated for 4 days. It will be celebrated from Januay 15 to Januay 18, this year. Histoy shows that a similar harvest festival called Puthiyeedu @st harvest) was celebrated during the Chola rule.

['ongal literally translates into boiling over and a dish by the same name is allowed to boil over during the festival. The dish usually has rice and dhal boiled together in a mud pot. Pongal can be made into a savoury or sweet dish by adding pepper or sugar respectively. The Christians in Pondicherry or Karaikal region also observe pongal during epiphany or the three Kings festival. Known as 'Moon Raja Pongal', the Christians in the former French colony use coconut milk, sugar, lentils and rice for this version of pongal. This is usually observed on January 6th, while the French made cakes celebrating the three wise kings visiting baby Jesus, the Indian Christians started making $ongal for the same.
