Madras Art Weekend is a collaborative initiative that brings together an entire art fraternity on a single platform. Hosted by some of the most prominent and leading contemporary art galleries in the city, MAW aims at exploring the vast potential of emerging and established artists, represented by various galleries, organisations and individuals.
The focus is to create a synergy, dialogue, interaction and a platform that is relevant, experiential and sensorial. From art talks by prominent artists, to avid collectors opening up their homes to curious admirers, from galleries engaging with various art professionals to the very best of creative workshops, the endeavour, is to bring together several art and design enthusiasts, broaden the reach and relevance of con temporary art and to reinvent and rediscover the narrative on the city’s Artscape.

Travel Diary of Madras Checks: from Madrasapattinam to Manhattan.

Madras Checks, the vibrant and earthy han dloom has traveled a long way around the world. Made from the soft fibres from the “tip-skin” of native trees, this fabric was initially worn by the peasants in the 12th-century fishing village, Madrasapattinam(Madras). The 36″ wide square handkerchiefs, block printed with bright colored check patterns, were called lungis, gar ments tied around the waist and extending till the ankle..
The arrival of the British colonizers in the 17th century, caused this fabric to be mass-pro duced and exported to other colonies. It was called ‘Injri’ meaning ‘Real India’ in Africa and had different uses in different parts of the continent. In Nigeria, it became a vital part of the customs of the Kalabari, a small group of Ijo ethnic people. It was their ceremonial attire, a gift for new babies or was given as a gift to the families of deceased loved ones. In other parts of West Africa like the Gold Coast and Ghana, brides had their gowns tailored from Madras Checks in the early 18th and 19th Centuries.
Another name given to Madras is Bleeding Madras. In 1958, American textile importer, William Jacobson, travelled to Bombay to trade with Captain C.P. Nair, an exporter of Madras.

While there, he was captivated by the bright and vivid patterned plaid which smelled heavily of oils and vegetable co lours. Despite the warnings of possible bleeding of colours due to the use of heavy detergents and washing machines in America, Johnson went ahead with the deal and sold them in the States. When complaints arose, a stroke of marketing genius turned this flaw into its biggest selling point. They began advertising it as an ‘Authentic Indian Madras’ that is ‘guaranteed to bleed’. It was sought after by the American elites and became a sign of novelty and affluence. Later throughout the 90s and 2000s, Madras Checks made its way into ramp walks and fashion magazines around the globe.
From its humble origins on the shores of Madras, this mes merising piece of fabric has come a long way to be cherished and loved by many across the globe. This timeless piece has been acknowledged by many fashion houses like Gucci, Ralph Lauren, and Hermes. A saree, a suit, or evening gown, Madras Checks is perfect for all occasions and is a must-have in every wardrobe.

A brilliant cook, a creative thinker, team player, a determined, kind soul with a dream to change his life and forge a new future in food”- these were the exact words used by Chef & Restau rateur Gary Mehigan to describe the gifted & skilful, Mr Sashi Cheliah.
Mr Sashi Cheliah with his ever affable smile and charming demeanour is a bundle of talent and good humour but has an unwavering focus on quality and ingenuity in his work. The Singaporean born MasterChef visited Chennai to launch his own and India’s first modern Peranakan restaurant Pandan Club
However, to know more about the man who’s perfected the art of delivering gastronomical wonders, one has to really understand his work process and the philosophy of his cre ations.
With roots in Madurai, Mr Cheliah was born and raised in Singapore and at present lives in Adelaide, Australia! So with a multicultural background as diverse as his, adapting to vari ous world cuisines was only a natural progression.
“Adapting to changes comes with different environments. The more I learn, the more I adapt. But I still stay grounded to my roots. My basic is my mom’s cuisine. Period. I grew up among many Asian flavours and now I am living in Australia and explor ing other new kinds of flavours . I also make it a point to learn new skills when I travel and trying to put new dishes together with that knowledge. So having the basics strong and adapting to different cultures and new changes keeps me going further and further.”
Talking about his mother and his favourite food memories growing up, Cheliah shares, “Mom used to run a restaurant, ac tually a small cafe. We call it coffee shop in Singapore. All the boys learnt to make basic things in the restaurant like Parottas, Mie Goreng, Nasi Goreng & such.” And adds, “ In the case of food

memories, i have to say It’s my Mom’s cooking. She makes amaz ing biryanis, amazing Chinese style dishes, Malay Sambals and more. Food was very important part of my growing up years.”
When asked whether growing up with Asian cuisines gives an edge over other world cuisines in terms of bet ter understanding of flavour, he simply states that it isn’t that accurate. “ Asian cooking. Generally, chefs who under stand food has good palates for flavour; so it can be Asian, Italian, French or anything. If a chef understands flavour profiles, it means he/she knows the minutiae of cooking
Cheliah also has a very interesting take on his cooking philosophy. “ this policy of ‘less is more’ less ingredients and enhancing flavours gives much better results. I also believe in not wasting anything. For me, sustainability is a very im portant factor. Nowadays especially, there are people who go without food and then there are places with an abundance of food. So “Head to Tale that I encourage. If you no tice, i’ve got Grilled Fish in the menu. But you don’t get served fillets. I give you the Whole Fish!! You enjoy the head, tail & ev erything in between. Same thing goes to all my fruits and vegetables too. Take the

watermelon. We use the flesh, as well as the juice for an entirely separate dish!! I make it a point to re-use every single component with minimum wastage.”

The King of Flavours’ was an apt moniker that was be stowed during his time in the MasterChef kitchen. But as it turns out, the nerve-racking environment and pressure tests just didn’t make things easy.
I didn’t expect to go that far in the competition. That’s the fact and truth! When I stepped into that show, my initial thought was if I could survive the first week, I am happy. That was my mind set but eventually as the competition went on; i started winning mystery boxes & challenges after challenges. The flavours that I put on the plate hits the palate of the judges, which means I am doing it correct ly and I didn’t change anything from then
But now with loads of experience behind him, his sights seem to be firmly set on developing his own style of intercultural cuisines that traverses cultures & seems like the Pandan Club is just that! But what’s the Peranakan cuisine and why did he specifically choose Chennai?
This is my love letter to Chennai!! That’s all. I knew Chennai and its food culture, with which I have a very dear association, is the perfect place for me to come and leave a little bit of myself in each of the courses!!
Coming to the cuisine, Peranakan is an amalgamation of Chinese, Malay & Indonesian influences. We’ve wanted to bring authenticity in all of our dishes. It’s all based on a single cuisine. In fact, we don’t give any plated dinner to anyone. It’s all served table side, preferably by the patrons

themselves. Everything is meant for at least two people. So it’s bet ter if you come as a group. if you notice the tables here, the 2 seaters are minimum ! We have more of 4 seaters, 6 seaters, even long tables. Yeah, we prefer big rooms!! So come as a family. You can order more dishes & will enjoy it more. This is something Peranakans do and we also encourage this to our customers.”
What’s interesting is that the menu is conceptualised to provide this esoteric culinary experience to the patrons. “The menu itself is a bit more complex. We have things like Black Nut Curry, which in its origi nal form is poisonous. However, it is fermented and then safe to consume. It’s also got a very unique flavour. We call it Black Gold of Peranakan cuisine. Then we have Candle Nuts. They are used as thickening agents for curries. Fermented soybeans are also very important ingredients in this cuisine. Almost 30% of our menu’s ingredients are sourced from Singa pore and Malaysia.”

A geologist shares her tryst with nature…
I spent my childhood and early youth in an oasis of peace and sanity amid the surrounding beauty of snow-clad Himalayan Mountains. As a small girl, I was always inquisitive to know about nature’s puzzle - the science behind the mountain building and different geomorphic features. From the early stage of my life, I was introduced to adventures in the rear mountains whilst accompanying my father to his sites (who was an electrical engineer) .
My first venture into the hidden world of darkness, an underground cavity - The Cave began much earlier than my work on these for mations.
I clearly remember an incident in an unknown cave situated in the forest on a ridge of an elevated hill about 40km away from Pithor agarh town, Uttarakhand. This was immediately af ter completing my master’s degree in Geology - I led a group of a few keen and enthusiastic youth, including my brother, in searching for the cave. After walking about 10km uphill from the motorable road, heading into the forest, we discovered several small openings within limestone rocks, but none were big enough for human entry. A bit further towards the ridge, after searching for about 2 hours, we finally found one deep narrow passage to enter the cave.
The cave was formed in wondrous limestone with multiple tiny paths, each with unique features as I could see from the top. Being slim and most adventurous, I was the first in the group to volunteer to take up the task of squirming down to the cave passage. I was astonished to feel the thrill of entering such a narrow cave first time in my life. In the excitement, I drove myself into a nearly vertical wall and had a

free fall of more than 15 feet from a skylight opening triangular cleft, a tight squeeze. I stretched my arms and wrenched my body to hold my grip on the wall so I could fit through with my hands. I could only hear the noise of water gushing through somewhere close to the ground and the strong wind blowing along the passage. Dangling in such conditions was a ter rifying experience. I was scared to realize I had no way to go - as I was stuck in the middle of the narrow George, an extremely tight crawlways. My hand began to pain, and I started yelling for help; there was a considerable echo when I yelled, but no one answered. After some time, I finally got my broth er’s attention and saw the rope hanging from the small opening where there was hardly any skylight. Finally, exhausted from the tortuous process, I found my way out of the vertical squeeze. Though it was quite a struggle, I felt the essence of accomplishment after completing the missions, the thrill of taking on a challenge, and a sense of victory.
I encountered plenty of such incidences while exploring the new caves. In my opinion, one must be well prepared, well equipped, and well experienced before entering any such adventures of a caving ex pedition. I recently returned to the same cave - this time, I was well equipped and had much experience to continue the exploration. I have been doing fieldwork in the Himalayan terrain with the company of a hammer, compass, and a field diary in my hand, and so far, I have never felt alone.

The most effective Designs are those that engage the kid’s mind emotions and body ” added Garima.
Lastly, the storage plays a vital role while designing the room. There should be enough storage for your child to play around and at the same time the fur niture, colours and style should all go hand in hand. What say let’s create a world pour little ones deserve.
