WE SINGLE OUT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL EXAMPLES BECAUSE THEY DESERVE THEIR OWN BRAND OF CELEBRATION.

With license to be a little bit less serious, these staffers come up with brilliant approaches to making sure their school community is well represented.

Many of them do it with just a few hours of club time each week. We are always excited to see what they’ll come up with next. And, we’re never disappointed. After all, middle school sports are just as sporty and their clubs are just as clubby. These are our future editors and managers.

THE YBK WORLD IS AN AMAZING PLACE.

DOESN’T MEAN BORING:

The Concolor didn’t settle for the usual section titles and instead opted for a complete rename. Each section connects to the theme perfectly with “Tell Me About…” and attaches to each section: Life (Student Life), Class (Academics), Them (People), Goals (Sports) and You (Reference). To keep the theme going strong, the staff placed an all-coverage device in each section, featuring a question mod with four talking heads. To wrap up the book, the ACD continues into the index, where we also find current events coverage. Love to see it!

TELL US A STORY: From the cover to the closing, this volume’s thematic copy set the stage. To begin, the opening copy and singular image hit the nail on the head of the book’s conversational theme. As you head into the dividers, the copy gives a quick summary of the section and still falls in line with wanting to be “told” what’s happening at Ruben Dario. And for the grand finale, the image of the teacher appears to be explaining as though she’s “telling” the student. What a great way to wrap up another great yearbook.

SHOW AND TELL: Every designer dreams of good aesthetics, and this yearbook provides just that. The color palette is fresh — navy, pink and light blue pairing together nicely. The mixed AHJ fonts: Urbano Condensed, Avalon and Handschrift Cursive are playing the leading roles, giving the pages a touch of elegance and playfulness. Who knew that muted colors and font tricks could make a yearbook so chic?

INNOVATION: TIP-IN WITH GLOSS UV Juliana Nicole Tuvera, Alleli Bella Ponce and Kailie Theler Varsity Rep: Paulette Suwa Ewa Makai Middle School EWA BEACH HI

Stand-out features:

AMAZING. ICONIC: This Ho’oilina is a trove of information — living up to its theme of “In Case You Didn’t Know.” And boy, do they make sure you know! The coverage is extensive, yet the packaging is skillfully done so that you wouldn’t want to miss a single detail. The clever use of “Now You Know” moments at the end of mods and the engaging “Did You Know” mods contribute to an informative and interactive yearbook. Additionally, profiletype spreads cleverly placed on dividers offer a deeper dive into the lives of students, making the entire book a personal read.

GIVE US A READ: One standout feature that elevates this yearbook is the exceptional long-form copywriting. It’s not just about delivering information; it’s about crafting narratives that made us (and their school!) read it all. The inclusion of reader services, with student names boldly highlighted, adds a personal touch while also making it fun to see who was featured. This little design detail packs a punch when showcasing the staff’s hard work for great inclusion.

TIPPED (AND LOCKED) IN:

With its strategic tip-in, Ho’oilina took their school through a theme journey. The 12-page supplement introduced the “In Case You Didn’t Know About Our People” section. The inclusion of “Profile Magazine” in the folio name adds an elegant touch — signaling to readers that they’re about to learn so much more about those who make up their community. Because of course, you didn’t know that Ms. Beauchan swam for the UCLA Bruins.

Stand-out features:

COLOR FUN: Imperium boasts a vibrant color connection between sections to enhance the sassy “Okay, so…” theme statement. The creativity doesn’t stop there with each traditional section receiving a rename — adding more personality and uniqueness to each section. The consistently placed folios add a delightful touch. Not only do they provide organization, but when the book is closed, they allow colors to peek through the edges. It’s a thoughtful design choice that adds an extra layer of visual appeal, complemented by section-specific talking heads that contribute to the cohesive and colorful volume.

ALL THE COVERAGE:

Get ready for coverage in all ways! The spreads blend a variety by showcasing a mix of infographics, cutouts and talking heads. But that’s not all — the introduction of extended captions for dominant photos elevates the coverage to a whole new level by turning those moments into longer copy packages.

MASTERS OF PACKING:

Behind the scenes, Imperium designers showed us their love for internal margins and the Square One packaging approach. These elements play a crucial role in fitting in an impressive amount of coverage. Without the full separators of space, spreads avoid clutter but also ensure that every inch is utilized effectively, sharing the staffers’ mastery in design and layout.

Stand-out features:

A STARRING ROLE:

Captions take center stage in this yearbook — both with their reader service in the caption lead-in style and by hitting the perfect ABCDQ formula. And, Ingenium staffers made sure that the captions for cover photos were placed on the endsheet. Bonus points for remembering that all photos are worthy of identification. Finally, another essential part of the lineup, bylines were included and formatted correctly. Go team.

THROUGH THE YEAR:

This volume takes readers on a chronological journey, neatly organized by quarter. The clever use of dividers acts as a guide by aiding navigation and serving as a mini-table of contents. This thoughtful organization ensures that readers can easily follow the timeline of the year. Plus, you’ll find the headline on the minitable of contents as a play to the “like” in the theme statement. “Find more stuff like” directs the readers to exactly where they want to be.

SUPERB AND SPORTY:

Sports coverage in this yearbook is nothing short of terrific, marked by correct and accurate scoreboards that provide a true record of the year. Plus, the special callout to coaches with detailed information is a standout feature that not only acknowledges their contribution but also adds a layer of depth to the coverage. This commitment to excellence extends beyond sports, repeating in the clubs section, where the attention to detail continues to shine with accurate member listings and quick facts.

Stand-out features:

TYPE DELIGHT: For those who love good typography, this La Cresta is the book for you. The type shines through with a mix of AHJ Franklin Gothic and AHJ Brice Handwriting. Kicking off the book with a Matte laminated cover, the tactile fun of the lettering gets added with the perfect touch of Raised UV. To keep the type action going, the monochromatic endsheet introduces the fun and quirky attitude found throughout each headline package in its looks and words. Bonus points for the “this just got…” connection to the theme statement, too!

TIMELY TALKS: Hold on to your book bags because this portraits section is serving up timely coverage angles. From what’s in your book bags to Hydroflasks making a statement (because hydration is cool, right?), and don’t even get us started on the gas station snacks, the coverage is personal and inclusive to all.

ANCHORS AWAY!: The staff provided an eyeline to fill the spreads to the brim with great content while also giving breathing room! Mixed coverage devices are placed perfectly to bring even more coverage into this fun, quirky book. Pull quotes, caption and photo mods and photo packages take turns in the spotlight, while extended caption stories add depth to spreads. And like the pro-designers the La Cresta staffers are, each cutout is anchored to ensure content stays grounded and continues the internal margin between each coverage level.

ENDSHEET: ONE OF THREE

Stand-out features:

SHOWIN’ OFF: This yearbook truly stands out with its innovative approach, featuring not one, not two, but three captivating color combinations for both covers and endsheets. The Matte lamination and Raised UV are found on three options: An ivory cover with a blue endsheet, a blue cover with a green endsheet and green cover with ivory endsheet — creating a visually striking palette that sets the tone for an engaging visual journey. Because “that moment when” you have three different cover styles ... is a good one.

A MOMENT IN TIME:

Embracing a “time” theme, Paw Prints provides a chronological story, beautifully capturing the essence of months and moments. The thematic thread extends to the endsheet, where the chronological breakdown, sprinkled with school memories, adds a touch of elegance to the overall design. To add an assist, the folio both lists the traditional section and each month to guide the readers through.

HELLO, PRETTY: The typography blends cursive, sans serif and skinny serif fonts. The use of rails between each type package contributes to a clean and modern design aesthetic. From pull quote moments to folios adorned with brackets, the cover art becomes a recurring motif, seamlessly placed onto spreads. Plus, we love the cutouts at the bottom of the pages that anchor the design and add a layer of cohesiveness to each layout.

Stand-out features:

KEEP IT COVERED: The journey into this yearbook starts off fun with its cover. What makes it even more impressive is the perfect balance achieved with effects and transparency. Layered effects can sometimes be a tricky business, but the Re f lections staff nailed it! Moving into the opening, the airy design with pull quotes aligns with the headlines — setting the tone for a great yearbook. And, we can’t deny our love for the doggo that appears on the cover and once again in the opening.

PARTY IN THE BACK: A good yearbook has a good reference section. Here’s an example to check out. The staff opted for more than just talking heads. Quick quotes are still in the mix, but the addition of cutouts, graphics and snippets of club information elevates the coverage to a whole new level. It’s always a bonus to see coverage between the portrait panels — rather than just the sides or top and bottom.

LITTLE BITES: Who says coverage has to be traditional? This volume takes a refreshing approach with bite-sized coverage that breaks away from the norm. Instead of lengthy captions, the staff opted for quick facts and mods, creating a punchy and informative read. The “Be Informed” spread is a prime example: offering fast facts about the school, the number of library books and even where students are from.

CLOSING COVERAGE COVERAGE COVERAGE 258
Adviser: Javier Hernandez Editors: Katherine Westberg, Jovanni Caldera and Rocco Cutrona Varsity Reps: Vicky Aguirre, Ashley Cuervo and Jose Otero

Stand-out features:

SCHOOL SPIRIT: Opting for a theme that is both a play on the school name and inclusive, the Riptide ditches the mundane and gets creative. “Just NautilUS” opens the door for their renamed traditional labels to align with the perfect theme statement. From “Just live” capturing the essence of student life to “Just give” embodying generosity in the reference section, the theme play extends to “Just play” for sports, “Just learn” for academics and “Just be you” for individual portraits. The theme is connected in all components with thematic copy reinforcing the spirited vibe.

THE RIGHT ANGLES: Behind the scenes, Riptide designers aspired to have an appealing design. Clean Square One templates take center stage, offering a sleek and organized layout. The spreads provide a framework that elevates the overall aesthetic and ensures a polished, unified look. Plus, the white space and internal margins align seamlessly with the squares on the spine. This thoughtful alignment is not just for show. The squares serve as the backdrop for talking heads in portrait sections, creating a cohesive visual narrative throughout the entire book. Talk about the perfect right angles.

PORTRAIT PERFECT: Talking heads receive a creative makeover with photo effects, adding an extra layer of personality and uniqueness to each individual’s story. The excitement doesn’t stop there. Big picture moments take the spotlight in the opening and dividers. The combination of creative photo effects and impactful imagery brings the theme colors together perfectly.

260 FEATURE COVERAGE COVERAGE OPENING
Adviser: Adrienne Forte Varsity Rep: Kara Petersen Robinson Middle School FAIRFAX VA

Stand-out features:

FUN THINGS HAPPENED HERE:

This volume of Sentry set the tone for an engaging and enjoyable flip through the pages. The visual-verbal connection established in the opening is a key factor contributing to the book’s theme of “Good Things Happen Here.” The deliberate use of graphics and colors enhances the overall appeal, creating a vibrant and cheerful atmosphere. Plus, the staff incorporated mods and angles to add an element of excitement — cleverly introducing a game of “two truths & one lie” that inserts an extra layer of fun into the content.

SO MUCH GOOD: The staff opted for four main colors for simplicity while still showing off the perfection within spreads. The simple color scheme extends seamlessly to all aspects of the book, including type treatments. The cohesive pairing of colors not only adds to the book’s overall attractiveness but also complements the quality of the headline writing. The play on words in the headlines, such as “What’s sewing on?” helps their overall lighthearted theme.

GET PLAYFUL: To begin, mods including “this or that” scenarios engage readers in decisionmaking. Plus, it extends beyond mere choices. Creative coverage ideas include comparing clubs, team versus individual preferences and even voting on field trip destinations. Kudos to their well-designed infographics in the people section — making the content not only visually appealing but also informative.

Stand-out features:

THE FUTURE IS GREAT

COVERAGE: Where The Patriot staff opted for less long-form copy, they didn’t miss out on increasing their coverage. Including a column of six talking heads on both the left and right sides of the spread brings a little bit of fun to the book. Questions varied from “What do you hope to accomplish at Harvest Park?” to “If you could change the school mascot to anything, what would you choose?”

DESIGN ELEMENTS GALORE:

As a good book does, the cover kicks off the design, and it continues as you move throughout the book. Inside, you’ll find the outlined sans serif with a sprinkling of handwritten and serif fonts for an extra layer. Bringing the cover into the book, the color palette — mixed with shades of primary and secondary colors — found its way into the ribbons behind the talking heads, divider headlines and more.

PHOTOS AND MORE: Photo

packages are top-notch in this volume. Both the photography and the packaging earn an A+ to complement the captions. The balance of large and small images, along with well-defined internal margins and sizing, ensures that certain photos take center stage. Moreover, the addition of cutouts sprinkled throughout brings a harmonious connection to each visual element.

COVERAGE 264
ENDSHEET OPENING

Stand-out features:

ALL THE WORDS: The theme of The Prowler seamlessly integrates a diverse range of adjectives, encapsulating both the highs and lows of the school experience. Buzzwords like “scary,” “combative,” “organic” and “sweaty” all contribute to the experience of being a student at Short Pump. The umbrella coverage is guided with the labels thoughtfully placed at the top right of each spread. The comprehensive coverage extends to the endsheet, featuring a full table of contents, ensuring no aspect of school life is left untouched. Whether it’s the “chill” vibes of favorite ice creams or the “speedy” pursuits of running, each section adds a layer to the theme.

NO MESS PERFECTION: One stand-out feature in this yearbook is the all-coverage device running at the bottom of each spread. This not only provides a consistent visual element but also offers an engaging platform for additional content. Some spreads take it a step further by incorporating cutouts, creating a little talking head moment that adds a personal touch to the narrative. The mix of short-answer quotes within these moments contributes to the dynamic storytelling — giving this book the superstar ranking from us.

THANKS FOR THIS: Not solely relying on the typical “–ing” starters, the captions showcase a mix of ABC and include some direct quotes. While not conforming to a standard starter, these captions provide insightful and varied perspectives, avoiding the monotony of repetitive “I like to run” quotes. Staffers paid close attention to their interviews and got “Everything in Between” their classmates.

LET’S JUST GO

WITH IT: The yearbook kicks off with a bang, showcasing its theme copy prowess right from the endsheet. The theme isn’t just a passing mention; it’s a thread woven through the entire book. Renamed sections, dividers, headline packages and feature spreads all play a part in bringing this theme to life.

UNDER THE UMBRELLA:

The staff took umbrella coverage and ran with it. The section “Kind of the Same” kicks off the book including events that happen each year, but with the this year’s unique POV. Plus, the clever use of folio labels ensures that readers can easily navigate through the diverse content. The hierarchy between packages is well thought out — offering a clear difference between dominant and supplementary coverage. Even with a lot to cover, the spreads manage to fit in umbrella topics seamlessly, anchored by strategically placed cutouts that add an extra layer of visual interest. Bravo!

SO MUCH TO LOOK AT:

The overall design of The Scrapbook is a visual treat. The type, colors and design elements come together in a symphony of aesthetics. The quote squares add a touch of sophistication. There’s a delightful theme connection achieved with the slab bold sans serif and the handwritten font. From the classy “go with it” to the playful “it’s kind of a lot,” the typography choices elevate the design, making it not just visually pleasing but also an extension of the theme.

Stand-out features:

WHITE SPACE ISN’T JUST SPACE: It can be the perfect way to break up the coverage and let each element shine. Hierarchy is predominant — leading the eye through the maze of content, especially in the photo packages. And, let’s talk about the mix of type packages and fonts — they’re not battling for attention. Instead, they play together seamlessly — making it crystal clear where the eye should dance.

ANGLES AND MORE: From the cover to the endsheet and opening profiles to dividers — the visual and verbal theme is a chef’s kiss. This yearbook doesn’t just boast great coverage and compelling copy; the thoughtful design elements are showcased by The Stinger staffers. When working with a shape like a triangle as your main graphic, it must serve a purpose. To bring the verbal theme together, sections got clever renames like “View from our world,” “desk,” “sidelines” and “stage.”

EVERYONE EVERYWHERE:

From the long-form copy to A+ captions, The Stinger staffers worked hard to ensure each spread was inclusive and designed appropriately. We give major props to the all-coverage devices ensuring their reach extends to everyone. But that’s not all — mini talking heads pop up, each contributing a unique perspective to the spread’s topic. A job well done for many voices!

COVER DESIGN BEST PRACTICES:

A yearbook cover combines visual and verbal elements to make a great first impression. The cover from Cooper MS is a solid example of how their theme starts on the cover and finds its way onto the endsheet.

Make sure your cover is attractive and easy to understand as it presents the theme to the reader. Pleasanton’s whimsical cover is straightforward, but the theme is obvious as you read both the front lid and endsheet.

Take care to include the right information in the right places on the cover and spine. Falcon Cove MS checks off the boxes for the perfect spine including the year, volume, book name and school name. Bonus points for the city and state, too!

If you include photos on your cover or endsheet, make sure to identify the students or teachers somehow. The best place for these captions is on the endsheet nearest the photo. And remember, even simple name IDs and photo credits are better than nothing at all. Great job for this, Double Peak!

ENDSHEET BEST PRACTICES:

Continue the theme elements from the cover onto the endsheet. Check out the example from Deer Creek MS as it places the theme statement in front of their gymnasium wall décor. Talk about a perfect connection.

Include a table of contents with as much specificity as you dare but at the very least, section headers and page numbers. A big shoutout to Forest MS for the sections and spreads listed for a complete table of contents.

Include a visual/verbal connection between the theme and the section titles, especially if they are renamed to match the theme. Corona Del Mar MS took theme visuals and verbals and ran with them. Notice how water-themed section titles lend to the theme “Smooth Sailing” on the cover with the stripes coming to play on the endsheets.
