Unexpected
Discovering De Soto was scheduled to print two issues for 2024, as funding was being re-established. I had so wanted to feature the Channel 4 Zip Trip that took place as our Fall Issue was being printed. Then a few weeks ago, as I was turning off my alarm, in a split second I heard, “We are in De Soto at Harps Food this morning collecting food for their food pantry.” I thought, I need to be there! Changing my morning plans, I headed over–grabbing some food from my pantry to donate and a packet with Discovering De Soto issues.
The next day, I was at the Johnson County Extension Office, Gallery Garden, in Olathe, where many Master Gardeners volunteer. At the end of the morning announcements, a De Soto resident shared that she was chosen to be part of the group that will decorate the White House for this Christmas season.
I thought–really, God. It looks like we’re going to put together an additional 2024 Holiday Issue! There were just too many important articles that needed to be published! You’ll find them inside this issue, along with Business Briefs, City of De Soto Holiday Events Pages, and area Holiday Celebrations.
May this Christmas Season bring you unexpected surprises of joy, grace and needed strength.
As always, enjoy the issue and thank you for making Discovering De Soto one of the most read and treasured printed publications! Much thanks to our advertisers who funded this unexpected issue.
Sincerely,
Rose Burgweger

Life 88.5 radio station food drive brings 800 lbs. of food to the De Soto Food Pantry
It was a Terrific Tuesday in De Soto on October 22, when Life 88.5 set up outside the Harps Food entrance. The food donation goal of 800-pounds was met by 10 am, and then brought to our local De Soto Food Pantry.
On a cool, brisk morning at 7 am, Life 88.5 began their Terrific Tuesday Food Collection in De Soto. Community Engagement Director TJ Jackson–along with volunteers Brenda Henry, De Soto; Pat Thomas, Lee’s Summit; and Jesse Wilson, Basehor–greeted the public, accepted food donations and weighed in totals. Ministry was in action as many contributed. It was moving to see one man hand several tens to buy food with, saying, “I’ve been clean for several years now!” With the last 5-pound bag of flour, the goal of 800 pounds was reached. The group then headed over to the De Soto Food Pantry. The 800 pounds of food was unexpected, but gladly received by the food pantry volunteers.
Terrific Tuesdays are hosted each year by Life 88.5 on the nine Tuesdays leading into Thanksgiving. Locations are chosen throughout their listening area. All non-perishable food collected is distributed within each community. The station states on their website, “We view this mission in your community as an opportunity to serve God and to serve you.” https://life885.com –written and compiled by Rose M. Burgweger, publisher/editor
An outreach of the university of northwestern, St. Paul, the broadcast ministry began in 1949 when Rev. Billy Graham, then president of the college, signed their flagship station KTIS-FM on with a prayer of dedication. 15 music and talk stations have expanded across the Midwest to share Christ through music and online resources. life 88.5 is located in overland Park.
when the group arrived at the De Soto Food Pantry, Jesse, shown above center, realized this was the place where she received assistance many years ago. Being in a tough place with her daughter’s health issues, the De Soto Food Pantry provided much needed financial and food assistance. She now volunteers to help others in distributing food through 88.5’s Terrific Tuesdays. Be part of the Life 88.5 Support Team https://www.life885.com/volunteer

Thanks to all who contribute time, money & food throughout the year to the De Soto Food Pantry. The local pantry has been operating since 2014. Donations are received from many businesses, organizations, and individuals who are essential for the De Soto Food Pantry to continue to provide services. Volunteers donate their time to staff the food pantry and sort food. Each Thanksgiving, dinners are provided to families in need. Harps, Huhtamaki, and the De Soto Chamber of Commerce assist in hosting the Thanksgiving dinner food bag drive. Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) Out of School Time Program (oST) donated 5,800 items this year. Additional groups include area churches, various civic groups, neighborhood food drives, school districts, and individuals. Wendy shared her wonderful news with much emotion at the the Garden Gallery, located at the Johnson County Extension Office, where she volunteers. She has been a Johnson County Extention Master Gardener since 2001. With decades of experience as a horticulturist and designer, she is also a community leader and has served at her church in many capacities throughout the years. Sam is a one-person shop, bringing over 30 years of automotive repair experience to the growing area. He offers services for all car and truck models–including domestic and foreign, old and new; along with scanning tools for diagnostics and a/c services.
An interesting tidbit–Sam worked on Travis Kelce’s ‘70’s Chevelles, while they were stored at the Fuel House in Bonner Springs. They were in the 2024 Kelce Car Jam.

New Colors...New Flooring...New Accents A New Look for Great American Bank!
Remodeling is currently underway at Great American Bank in Downtown De Soto. “It was time to refresh, lighten up and brighten up,” said Brenda O’Keefe, branch manager, assistant vice-president. “It has been 20 years since any updating and it is time, especially with our community growing.” The new colors, new flooring and tile, and restained woodwork will give the space a more modern look, while keeping some of the integrity of the original building. Shack Built, located in Olathe, was selected as the local designer/contractor for the project. The lobby was closed as demolition began the first week of November, and reopened after Veteran’s Day. Signage at the lobby entrance will direct customers while the renovation continues. Completion is expected by the end of 2024. Thank you for your patience during this time of remodeling.

Orchestra Program Proposal Approved
The USD 232 Board of Education approved an Orchestra Program Proposal on November 4, 2024, that was presented by Adelyn Soellner, Chief of Academics. With the approval, Step 0 will be implemented with the start of the second semester. This step provides for a before/after school Orchestra teacher for high school and middle school students. Step 1 will be considered as part of the budget planning process for the 202526 school year. This step would provide one full time Orchestra teacher to travel between the three district middle schools.
The Orchestra Program Proposal includes five culminating steps in fully developing the program with full time staffing at each middle school and high school.
There was a strong and collective aspiration among students, parents, staff and administration in the district to establish an Orchestra Program.

Dusk in De Soto Mural Officially Welcomed with a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Residents, De Soto Art Council members and City officials gathered together on Thursday, October 24 to officially welcome the Dusk in De Soto Mural to De Soto.
Mural artist Alex Eickhoff shared from his heart, “Getting an opportunity like this is truly a blessing, and I thank you and the community for opening up your arms to me. I think that I am blessed by God in my abilities, as I do think that we are all created with abilities. My hope is that my work in the least will inspire somebody to be creative in their own way.” And with closing thoughts he added, “If this mural makes you smile, then I have done my job.”
Mayor Walker also spoke, sharing his thoughts. “When I see this mural and the other [sunflower] mural it makes me proud to be from De Soto. They bring joy to downtown. I love that we bring homage to the agriculture roots that we had here in De Soto with the imagery of the goats and sunflowers, that convey our history.” He added, “One of the things I love about what you have brought is all the ‘Easter eggs’ you put in there for us to find.” see Fall 2024 Discovering De Soto Public Art
In closing, Mayor Walker added, “Art has a way that brings us all together. That’s why I totally support community funding of the arts, because it is a great way to build community. I thank the Arts Council for your leadership in bringing the arts to public places, and I thank the City Council for your support of the arts.”
