Welcome... I

am proud to introduce myself as Discovering Bourne’s new editor. My aims for the magazine are to keep the editorials coming! They have been a great success with people commenting that they look forward to the articles every month, and I will ensure they only get better. I also hope to bring new and inventive ideas to work your mind, and get you more interested, so keep an eye out for them in the coming months.

April is here and I can still remember wrapping up warm for January, wondering when it was going to get warmer! And now it is! I cannot wait to take my dog for long walks in Bourne Woods and soak up the vitamin D from the sun. It’s not only the sun coming out this month but eggs, not chicken eggs but the chocolate ones! It’s time to stock up as Easter is almost here. In this month’s issue we have some articles to teach you all about the importance of posture, what the police are doing to keep the streets clean and safe, and more money saving tips written by me. So if you have any money saving questions, please ask. As well as articles to read, there are lots of events coming up to get you and your family out of the house; such as animal open days, trips to the theatre, bunny hunting for Easter and Comedy nights at the Angel Hotel. So don’t forget to have a look at our events page and put the dates in your diary. Lastly, please do keep emailing me with your thoughts about our articles and the magazine so that we can include your words in our postbag in the next issue.

A word

from your Mayor

Brenda Johnson

W

ell the flowers are blooming and the town is starting to get ready for a very busy year. There will be a St.George’s Day parade in the town this year and it would be good to see everyone getting involved. How about all taking a picnic onto the Well Head to enjoy a real family day afterwards? This will be just the start of the festivities we will have the chance to get involved with this year. We need to be making preparations for the 4th of July when the Olympic torch will be coming through the town. We have the Diamond Jubilee and the BRM Rally. For a small town we have a lot going on and plenty of chance for everyone of all ages to come together and celebrate. As my year in office comes to an end I would like to thank all the people in the town who have supported me. I have met some wonderful, local unsung hero’s who work hard to raise money for lots of different causes. These people make you proud to be part of such a caring community. Bourne has a real jewel in it’s crown with the Butterfield centre where a lot of volunteers help deliver hot meals to elderly and disabled people living in their own homes. These people would probably not get a hot meal if this service did not exist. They also have a day centre where they collect the elderly in their mini bus and organise activities for them on a daily basis which helps them socialise. With more houses being built these services are going to be vital to a lot more people. If you have just moved to the area and have spare time to give why not take a look around and see if there is a way you could help in the community. This helps getting to know others in the immediate area. Bourne Town Council tries to do the best for all who reside in the local area but we need the 6

input of the community to ensure that we are getting it right. It would be great to see more people coming to the meetings and I hope when we move to the Corn Exchange it will give more people the opportunity to participate. It is always nice to see the public at our meetings because it shows they have a real interest in where they live or work. As every year I am looking forward to the opening of the Outdoor Swimming Pool and hope they will have a very successful season. This facility is a real asset and I think it is one of the best swimming pools around our area. My family come from Grantham to use it and I don’t believe we do enough to raise the profile of it. I will continue in my quest to raise the profile of the whole town and hope to see more of you in the future. Many thanks to all who came to the Civic Ball on February 24th and helped to raise £450 toward my charities. I hope all those who came enjoyed the evening as much as I did. Also, a big thank you to all the local businesses that gave prizes for the tombola and raffle. THANK YOU BOURNE, YOU TRULY ARE A GREAT TOWN WITH GREAT PEOPLE LIVING AND WORKING IN IT. Kindest regards

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA

Reverend Dr Lynda Pugh

“I

was absolutely delighted to be appointed Priest-In-Charge of the Ringstone in Aveland Group of Churches: Dunsby, Haconby, Rippingale, Morton and Kirkby Underwood – five beautiful Churches set within five beautiful villages. Whilst at my licensing service in March I was overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome by all the expressions of love and support. I attended Ripon College, Cuddesdon (Oxford) for my theological training, and came to Lincolnshire to serve as an assistant curate in The Glen Group of Parishes (Pinchbeck, West Pinchbeck and Surfleet), where I made many friends. We are now exploring the area around Bourne and feel happily settled in the Vicarage

in Morton. As I look about and walk in the beautiful woods that surround us, there are signs of nature bursting into life. It is the time of pruning and clearing away all the dead wood, leaves and accumulated detritus to make conditions right for growth. Also, in our spiritual life it is the season of Lent, which is an opportunity to undertake some pruning to celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection at Easter. Jesus said that we ‘may have life, and have it abundantly.’ This is a wonderful time for new beginnings: a new beginning for my ministry, the Ringstone in Aveland Group and a new beginning for us all to embrace as God’s beloved sons and daughters.

Local History

..the Old Grammar School by Rex Needle

n the early 17th century, William Trollope, a local landowner, left a bequest which provided for an endowment of £30 a year to maintain “an honest, learned, and godly schoolmaster” in a free grammar school incorporated by royal charter and built by himself. The school was situated next to the Abbey Church where it still stands although the premises has been rebuilt since his day. The present building, erected in 1678, has a brick superstructure over a solid stone foundation, but it is not certain whether this stonework is from Trollope’s original school or whether it dates even further back to the days when the monastery existed. The duties of schoolmaster were carried out by the vicars of Bourne until the Rev. Joseph Dodsworth was appointed in 1842. He began delegating the actual work of teaching and administration to his curates until 1858 when William Webber was appointed under-master. It was his influence that provided the boys with a playground on a small area of land adjoining the school on the east side. Until then, scholars had been playing in the churchyard among the tombstones, but several had been damaged and there had also been complaints about them roaming the streets between lessons.

Many of his pupils went on to University of Cambridge and Oxford University, but he resigned in 1881 after 23 years of teaching. His departure signalled an end to the school’s popularity with the result that attendance dwindled and it closed in 1904. During the Second World War, the premises became an ambulance station and a meeting place for the Girl Guides. Also, in later years it was used as headquarters for the local troops of cubs and boy scouts. Today, it is Grade II listed within the Bourne conservation area and is currently administered by the Bourne Educational Foundation but has been badly neglected in recent years and in April 2003, it was condemned as unsafe and all entry forbidden. The roof was leaking although some remedial work was carried out in May 2007. The building has been up for sale since February 2005 and acquisition by a private developer is seen as the only chance it has to survive unless an organisation such as the Bourne Preservation Trust is prepared to take on the challenge with the intention of bringing it back into useful life for the benefit of the town.

Security

Home

IS YOUR AS SECURE AS YOU THINK?

Barry Meech Owner of approved MLA company BM Locksmiths highlights ,

the importance of using a professional locksmith to look after your home security. Looking at a problem recently shown on the BBC, and what members of the public can do if they’re worried.

L

ock snapping is a method where a burglar can gain access through your front or back door within seconds, by using a very simple technique to smash the door handle and then break the cylinder in two.

Cylinder snaps in two halves, leaving the locking mechanism exposed

For some time now the official police approved scheme ‘secured by design’ and British standard institute have been working to improve door security - specifically against lock snapping. New standards have recently been introduced to overcome this problem by using anti - snap cylinders alongside security handles.

The quickest and most cost effective solution to this problem is to upgrade basic euro cylinder locks to security enhanced anti - snap cylinder locks which have anti-snap cuts on both sides of the cylinder. If unreasonable force is applied to one end of the anti- snap cylinder, it only breaks away to the anti-snap line, but leaves the locking mechanism still inside the door. Anybody familiar with lock snapping can recognise an anti-snap lock and of course this is a big deterrent to any potential burglar before they even attempt to break in. Mul-T-lock Anti - Snap cylinder The British kite marked approved Mul-T-Lock anti - snap cylinder is one of the most popular security cylinders available, offering reliable security at an affordable price. The great thing about Mul-T-Lock also is that you can only get your keys cut at an approved Mul-T-Lock stockist.

Policing your By PC

Area

Nick Smith

has Spring arrived!

We are now moving swiftly on through the year and we are already heading towards Spring with the clocks just gone forward. For the Neighbourhood Policing team this is our busiest period for under aged drinking in the parks and public areas. In 2011 we seized in excess of 500 quantities of alcohol of various types. This is a reduction to last year but it is still too high. They were seized from children as young as 12 years old, and I think to myself, how do these people get the alcohol?

I can tell you! The ways children (yes children) get alcohol are: • They go into shops and try to get the alcohol and some are successful. • Standing outside shops and getting people to buy it for them which is an offence and if you are caught doing this you will be fined £80 for supplying a person under the age of 18. • Take it from home either with or without the parents knowledge again if you are a parent

and you supply alcohol to a child you will also be fined. I know it isn’t an offence for an underage person to drink in the privacy of their own home, however, they aren’t allowed to be in possession of alcohol in a public place. There are a lot of medical problems that come with too much drinking and what I found quite scary was when I confiscated alcohol from a 14 year old and they claimed that I couldn’t take it off them as they were an alcoholic (scary I know). There have also been complaints from residents that underage drinkers are not disposing of the rubbish in the correct manor causing a litter problem which someone has to clean up. The consequence for anyone being caught by my team littering is that they will be taken home to their parents and given a fine or Restorative Justice where they will spend a day picking up litter. So be warned!

News Update The Chairman of the Committee, Zak Pinchin, 18 and a keen skateboarder has stated “I am really pleased to take up this role, I am really looking forward to making things happen.” A site has been found where the skate park could be located. “Could” because there are many hurdles to jump over before anything can happen. With the news about the location the committee has rejuvenated with the news. There are now

thirty members of the committee, half being young people with an interest in the skate park The main hurdles are: • The organisation for the development and design of the facility • Seek Planning Permission • Raise funds There is no time scale for this project until these main hurdles can be overcome. Watch this space for further details.

Simple

looks at some money-saving

tips

This month we will look into Christmas saving schemes, credit cards that give something back and freebies.

CHRISTMAS SAVING

No-one wants to think about Christmas until they have to. Dreading draining the bank account dry. Although some people would say the earlier the better, and they might just be right. It doesn’t mean we have to start buying presents now, but saving a tiny bit of money away each week or month could result in a special hassle free Christmas. If you’re not good with saving your money yourself, there are different companies that can help. Park (www.getpark.co.uk) allows you to pay a small amount frequently and then when it comes to the time of year you don’t have to worry about all those bikes and Xbox’s your children want.

CREDIT CARDS WITH SOMETHING EXTRA

Credit Cards, we all use them, if it be for the smaller things we need or bigger necessities, we all want the best deals. The best deals now are cash back or other rewards when you use your credit card. With some credit cards you can get 5% back within the first three months, which means for people who use their credit cards anyway, it’s a bonus and they haven’t even changed their ways.

FREEBIES

We all like to get a freebie, but most of the websites around are fake and when you sign

up you gets hundreds of promotional emails that you know won’t work. This month I will give you the low down on the best websites to use which gives the best results. Voucher Cloud (www.vouchercloud.com) has a variety of different offers from mobile phones, going out for a meal, travel, health and beauty and shopping. Some of the offers they currently have on their website are for Premier Inn, Pizza Express and hundreds more so you can try things you’ve wanted to and save money on the things you do. MagicFreebiesUK (www.magicfreebiesuk.co.uk) is a website that offer various freebies which differ from iphone apps, free books, free contact lenses and many more random things that people might use or want to try.

Technology

Disk Defragmentation

Taff Lovesey looks at Disk Defragmentation and the Modern PC What is fragmentation? In short, fragmentation of

data is caused as a hard disk drive fills up with data (documents, images, video, audio etc.). When files are deleted space is cleared on a disk drive which can be re-used. However, this free block of space may not be large enough to store our new set of data, so the rest of that data is written on another part of the disk. Defragmentation looks at the disk and moves everything so that it sequential once more. This results in faster reading of data from the disk, hence a more efficient system.

internal disks and possibly some system ‘reserved’ areas (as in the example below).

I am often asked whether there is still a need to defragment your disk. The short answer is yes, or at least you should check it occasionally to see if it requires defragmentation. I’d suggest at least quarterly, less if you don’t have much data on your system, more if you are constantly moving large batches. Fortunately, as home computer systems disk drives have grown in space, the need to defragment is not as great as it once was. This situation has started to change recently though as those large drives begin to fill with photographs, media and video as the PC steps out of the office and into the home entertainment arena. So how do you defragment a disk these days? • Locate the Computer icon on your desktop (or start menu) and double click the icon to open up a display of your computer disks and devices. The disk drive/s will appear in the section labelled Hard Disk Drives. The image will show you how much of your disk has been used. To defragment this drive: • Place your mouse cursor on the drive and press the right button (i.e. right click) • A menu will pop up. Go to the bottom of this menu and left click on Properties This will display a window similar to the one shown (right). • Click on the tab marked Tools Another window is displayed presenting a number of disk based tools; Defragmentation, Error Checking and Backup • Click on Defragment now You are now shown a new window showing all your

Curiously you now have to select the disk drive you want to check for fragmentation once again. In our example we are checking the C: drive (this is usually the main system disk in a Windows based PC system) • Click the C: drive • Click Analyse The system will now analyse the disk drive to check the level of fragmentation and whether a defragmentation is required. As it progresses you will see a percentage bar showing status. It does take some time to check a disk, dependent on the size of the disk and the level of fragmentation. Once complete the tool will advise the defragmentation level. If the drive does not require defragmentation then you are all done. If it does then click the Defragment Disk button to run the tool (opinions vary but I defrag anything above 2%).

EVERY MONTH

Ray Pawlett looks into how The Warrior Spirit helps posture

THE WARRIOR SPIRIT “Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye” – Val Doonican

H

ow do martial arts work? Is it about learning how to be really handy with your fists or is it something else? I would suggest that if it were just about being good at fighting that professional fighters like the SAS would all be expert martial artists. Whilst some soldiers are very good martial artists – this is by no means a requirement. Let’s think about a far more gentle character, Val Doonican when he sang the song “Walk Tall”. When he sang the song, he was describing what martial artists know as “The Warrior Spirit”. Here are a couple of examples of the warrior spirit – The soldier who protected his emperor with a broken sword. He knew that the sword was broken but the Emperors foes did not! He manages to show sufficient spirit to not draw his sword. Predators only attack prey that is hanging at the back of the pack and looking bedraggled. Why risk being gouged or stamped on by the strong animal when the weaker spirited animals are there for easier pickings? In Tai Chi, we learn how to “Lift the head and raise the spirit”. A kind of re-wording of Val’s classic! When we lift the head, we look and feel stronger. We are not looking or feeling like the

weakest member of the pack. We are less likely to be attacked and instantly command more presence. Next time you are feeling a little low, check out your posture in the mirror. Then straighten up a little and see how much better you start to feel. Look at people who you know are feeling “up” and “feeling down”. Notice the difference in their postures. “The Warrior Spirit” is both the short term and long term goal of Tai Chi training. Learning Tai Chi will teach you how to cultivate and develop your warrior spirit until an inner alchemy starts to happen and you become the warrior. When this happens, you are transformed and have the compassion, instinct, generosity and composure that helps to define the warrior spirit. When you learn the warrior spirit you will be able to apply it to your life, family, business or wherever you need it. Give it a try! Next time you are in a difficult situation just straighten your body and notice the difference.

Congratulations! You are starting to become a warrior!

Body & Beauty

Losing Weight the Healthy Way Osteopath Jo Sunner discusses ways to lose weight

W

hile losing fat quickly is possible and can be practiced occasionally for quick results, it is not the solution for your weight problem. The first issue that arises with losing fat rapidly is that after you quit the diet and reduce the exercise, you will regain the lost pounds fast. And what is worse, you might gain even more fat than you had before. If you want to deal successfully with excessive weight on a long-term scale, there is only one (healthy) way to do it – “change your habits”. It might sound very discouraging that you need to do it and to say goodbye to rich meals in the evening, chips, chocolates, or even carbonated drinks but if you don’t make this sacrifice, your weight will never go away. We have all heard that eating in the evening is particularly bad for long-term weight loss. But it is even worse, if your dinner is the major or only meal for the day. If you happen to make this mistake don’t cry, that rigorous exercise and daytime starving doesn’t bring the desired results!! The best approach to meals is to have frequently small portions of food. At first, it might look as if you are eating all the time but if you take just some fruit or something else light every 90 to 120 minutes, this will prevent you from eating a big lunch or dinner later. Another trick is to chew the food for longer, instead of gulping a whole sandwich at once. If you chew the food for longer, you will feel fuller after a smaller portion. It is true, that when you are hungry, you intuitively eat fast but if you manage to harass the power of your hunger and start eating slower, you will enjoy your food more.

Eat small portions, frequently!

Successful permanent fat loss requires some other habit changes that are particularly discouraging for the lazy - the necessity to exercise frequently. It is best if you exercise daily for at least 30 minutes but since this might be difficult to fit into your schedule, exercising two or three times a week for half an hour or more can be accepted as a compromise. Remember, if you have better muscle tone and carry less weight then you WILL feel more energetic and feel better in yourself. Start with a short a regular walk every day.

Leopard Gecko Common Boa, Baz Bearded Dragon Mexican Black Tarantula Thai Tree Frogs European Eagle Owl Chinchilla

I was lucky enough to hear Baz, the common boa’s story of how he became a resident at the refuge. Baz was bought as a present, kept in a steel cage in a shed in winter. The wrong kind of environment can make any animal ill and that is what happened to Baz. Eventually the owner asked for The Exotic Pet Refuge to look after him. Baz hardly moved and didn’t eat for the first six months of being at the refuge, but slowly recovered.

Because of the amazing work that the refuge do to give these animals the chance they never had, go support them at their next open day on the 8th April 2012 at 108 Station Road, Deeping St James, Peterborough PE6 8RH. Tel: 01778 345923.

This is just one story of the amazing work the people that work at the refuge do. Exotic Pet Refuge is a charity and often has fund-raising events to help raise money so they can keep caring for these animals. The fund-raising day is a whole day where anyone can go and look at all their animals, food and drink is available and it is a great day out. Thor is a European Eagle Owl and has been at the refuge since he was born, he is now 22 years old and one of the main attractions on the open days due to its big size and friendliness. People get pictures with him because he is that friendly you can “rub your head against his feathers to feel how soft he is” said one of the workers at the refuge.

April Hints & Tips by..

Home & Garden

Waterside Garden Centre

Patio containers

Add instant colour to your patio and garden with ready-filled pots or just plant up your own and:

** *

Add a controlled-release fertiliser Water-retaining gel to the compost to make feeding and watering easy Fix up a micro-drip watering system for even better results – believe me, it’ll make life easier too.

Remember everything you need including containers, plants, compost, feeds, gel and watering system, and get planting today for a superb splash of colour through spring and summer.

Summer bedding

Prick out seedlings of tender bedding plants and pot up young plug plants and cuttings so that they can grow into sturdy plants ready for planting out once the fear of frosts has passed. Always use fresh potting compost and make sure that seed trays, pots and cell trays are thoroughly cleaned – or go and buy some new ones. Plants will need hardening off before planting out. They can be protected from cold, wind and light frosts with horticultural fleece.

Lawn care

Grass should be growing strongly now, so make sure you mow regularly. While you’re mowing, taking note of bare patches, moss invasion and weeds and deal with any problems you see. Now is an ideal time to feed the grass for a lush, healthy lawn.

Vegetables

To ensure tasty, early vegetables this year, buy your growing-bags now and put them

King Street, Baston, Peterborough. PE6 9NY (On the main A15 between Market Deeping & Bourne) 01778 560000

in the shed, garage or greenhouse so that the compost can warm up ready for planting up later. You can put young tomato, pepper, cucumber and other plants into growing-bags or 9 to 10 inch pots of compost as soon as they’re big enough to transplant.

Pest watch

As the weather warms up, pests and diseases will be stirring in the garden. Keep on top of any problems that do occur to ensure they don’t get out of control – early eradication is the key to success. Ready-to-use sprays do away with fiddly mixing and ensure you have something ready to deal with the problems as soon as they’re seen. Slugs and snails are a nuisance at this time because almost all new leaves are soft, lush and good food for them. Sprinkle slug pellets, place barriers, or water a liquid slug killer around susceptible plants such as hostas, delphiniums and vegetables.

Summer-flowering bulbs

For a riot of colour this summer you can’t beat summer-flowering bulbs. Lillies especially are perfect for bringing colour, and scent, to the garden. They can even be planted in containers on the patio. Then cover the surface of the compost with bedding plants for extra summer colour.

Plants of the month

Brighten up your garden now with the Plants of the Month. At this time of year there’s so much to choose from. Your garden will come to life with bergenias, camellias, chaenomeles, flowering currants, forsythia, heathers, hellebores, Magnolia stellata and primulas.

The Timeless Beauty of

Home & Garden

Garden Decking

Your garden is often referred to as your ‘outside room’. A room in which you can entertain friends, spend time with the family or just relax and unwind - that ‘room’ is a true extension of your home in every sense.

D

ecking gives you more scope to create the kind of surroundings you really want, while letting you explore your individuality.

Good decking adds value to the home. The Timber Decking Association products carry the ‘DECKMARK’ certified stamp. It is your guarantee that every single component you use has been rigorously tested.

All decking is pressure treated against rot, but Timeless Timber Decking is pressure treated with an additional wax treatment which acts as a water repellent.

Building Your Deck

• Checking for pipes, cables or serv ices under the area is needed before anything else can take place. • Consider the size of the deck. If it is to be used for dining, there needs to be plenty of room for tables and chairs. Always ensure it is capable of taking the expected load. • Timber decks differ from conventio nal patios and terraces significantly in their elevation and general height of construction. • Also, talks to your neighbours abou t your plans objections are the most usual reas on for planning issues. • Check there is good drainage in the area where you plan to build your deck. The deck design must maximise airflow through and around the construction to ensure good ventilatio n.

Do not lay ground level decks directly onto grass. Remove all turf and cover the ground with weed block membrane and then gravel to prevent any weeds growing. Lay the framing on concrete paving slabs or blocks bedded into position or on an existing level concrete area. Elevated decks structural posts should be used, positioned no more than 1800mm apart and sunk into the ground and fixed with concrete. Joists for the frame are attached to the posts using suitable fixings and the joist frame is fixed to the beams by nailing or screwing. Joists should be fixed at the centers’, a minimum of 400mm for maximum support, using landscape screws, galvanised nails or joist hangers. Use offcuts from the joists to prevent the joists from twisting and to strengthen the frame.

Deckboard Installation

Always use coated decking screws to prevent rusting. Join boards along the length over a joist where long runs are required of boards. Use additional sections of joist if necessary to increase the area for fixing. You must leave a reasonable gap (6 – 9mm) between each board when installing as it is natural for the deck boards to swell when wet and shrink when dry.

Maintaining your Timber Deck

Decks should be cleaned regularly, either by brushing with a bristled brush remembering the gaps or by using a power washer for a more thorough clean. Your deck will benefit from an annual treatment of water repellent to protect it. A suitable exterior, good quality solvent based product should be used for the best protection.

If decking is installed well and maintained on a regularly it will always look in finest form, and last for years giving you much enjoyment in your ‘Outside Room’.

Film Review

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4

GHOST PROTOCOL

T

om Cruise returns in the latest ‘Mission: Impossible’ film, and those after a fast paced, gravity-defying thrilling ride, will not be disappointed. The fourth of the Mission: Impossible films, villain, Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist), is a deranged Swedish nuclear scientist trying to create a third world war by fomenting conflict between the United States and Russia. His aim is the quite literal end of civilisation as we know it, so a newly cleansed world can open up for mankind. Many reviewers have argued that this is the best movie in the franchise. Director Brad Bird, an animator by training, who made Pixar’s

Released on the 30th April

Ratatouille and The Incredibles, has a budget large enough to allow him to do anything he fancies. In consequence the movie is visually remarkable as it tries to keep up with the frenetic activities of secret agent Ethan Hunt and his new trio of likable operatives: beautiful, resourceful Paula Patton, computer wizard Simon Pegg and analyst Jeremy Renner. With an ultra-violent pre-credit sequence in Budapest, jail breaks in Moscow to Dubai, fantastical explosions and original, exciting action scenes, this film is a bound to be a big hit for those looking for something a little more thrilling.
