Hope everyone’s summer is going well. I hope everyone had the chance to go and see the Olympic Torch whether in Bourne or other towns. It was great to have the support it did. A big well done to C Robinson who won the keg of beer! Hope you have all read last months pets issue about overheating and what to do as we all need to know that this summer. This month the pets issue is talking about maintaining your pets fitness levels and dog agility. It is the time of year when a lot of people are going on holiday or just been. For those that are going, have a great time. Don’t forget lots of sun cream, factor 30 if your anything like me! It is the perfect time to unwind and take those well deserved days off. To those that have just been I hope you had a great time. Let us know where you have been and your recommendations so that we could possibly feature them to let people know for future reference. The holiday period isn’t just for abroad, there is just as much happening around us with Deepings Raft Race and Burghleys Horse Trials so there is no excuse for getting out of the house and having a great time (and maybe showing off a tan)! I hope everyone has a great August and enjoys every moment before the children are back to school and the work clothes come out. v

ello everyone. Well the year is flying by, we have had some really special events happening in Bourne so far. The festive spirit has been in the air when the Olympic Torch came through Bourne. The Classic Car Show when John and I were collected in a wonderful classic car owned by Mr Reedman to open the show and present prizes, it was a marvellous day by St Peters Pool. A magical day at Burghley in the VIP enclosure where the Queen was present and asked Mrs Amy Norris if she was having a nice day. The Civic Service and lunch on the 17th June was really good to be able to share the day with you all, thank you to who attended. On the 23rd June we had a marvellous evening at the Centenary celebrations at Harleys Diner in Market Deeping for Kegels in Illinois for the longest running dealership of Harley Davidson Motorbikes. There was a great BBQ and live

very warm welcome to you all. I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself, having recently taken over as the Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant at Bourne. I started in Lincolnshire Police nearly six years ago right here in Bourne, in that time I have performed a variety of roles in a number of towns. I am pleased to be returning to the South Kesteven district where I began. I am not shy of tackling issues and my aim is to make our area an even safer place for you, your family and friends. Vehicle anti-social behaviour (ASB) is in the spotlight presently as warmer evenings lead to a gathering of vehicles in roads and public places. We understand that people who have nice cars wish to show them off and spend time in them, but we draw a line when this is contrary

bands. I even got the chance to ride on a Harley Davidson too! Sadly, after a long illness of Alzheimer’s and other illnesses my lovely mother passed away. Her care at The Yew Tree care home in Dowsby was exceptional and I don’t know how to thank the staff enough for their dedicated love and attention to mother for the 5 years she had been staying there. Her funeral will held at Thurlby Methodist Chapel on Friday 20th July, 11am. Thank you for all the wonderful messages and cards of support. The kindness from everyone about the Jubilee bandstand has been amazing, you should feel so very proud of yourselves in providing for the next generation and moving Bourne forward. We are still looking for confirmation of a site to construct the Jubilee bandstand in Bourne, but we hope to very soon. Take care and Kindest regards

Briefly, under the Police Reform Act 2002, Police have powers to deal with vehicles driven in an inconsiderate/careless manner, and which cause or are likely to cause alarm, distress or harassment to the public. On the first occasion a warning can be given if appropriate, which lasts 12 months, and on the second occasion the vehicle will be seized. This counts for the driver as well as the vehicle, so it’s no good swapping seats! If you are suffering from vehicle ASB then please do report it to us, as it maybe that someone else has suffered from it too, and the warning has already been given. If you are thinking of driving in this manner then I’d advise you to reconsider. Aside from risking injury, prosecution and a hefty fine, it doesn’t look too good walking home with your friends after having your car seized either.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA LLOYDS TSB AND SOUTH KESTEVEN DISTRICT COUNCIL HELP LOCAL BUYERS SECURE THEIR FIRST HOME Lloyds TSB and South Kesteven District Council will today join forces to help first time buyers purchase a home with a deposit of just 5%. The Local Lend a Hand product will be available in local branches of Lloyds TSB from today.

outh Kesteven District Council has initially set aside £1m which should help 30-40 buyers on to the property ladder. First time buyers often say that raising a deposit is the biggest challenge they face when looking to take their first steps onto the property ladder. Responding to calls for further innovation in the first time buyer market, Lloyds TSB worked with Sector Treasury Services, part of the Capita Group, to develop the Local Lend a Hand product. The scheme enables borrowers to buy their first home with a deposit less than the 10% required by most mortgage lenders. The fixed rate mortgage products that will be available during this scheme will also be at a lower rate of interest than would normally be available for this level of deposit. South Kesteven Council leader Linda Neal said: “We know that lots of local people can afford monthly mortgage payments but cannot move into the

market because they haven’t got the deposit. “If you take a house with a relatively modest asking price these days, say of £100,000, that means that the potential purchaser often needs a deposit of at least £10,000. Not too many people starting out in the housing market have got that sort of cash and that is where we can help.” Stephen Noakes, Commercial Director of Mortgages, commented: "With the launch of Local Lend a Hand in South Kesteven, we're making the housing market more accessible to more people. We know that many young people turn to the Bank of Mum and Dad to get their foot on the ladder, but that's not a solution for everyone. "Helping people to buy their first home is crucial in achieving and maintaining a sustainable housing market. Local Lend a Hand addresses some of the real problems that prospective buyers in South Kesteven might face." Subject to Lloyds TSB's usual lending criteria, borrowers are able to select an existing property in the area covered by South Kesteven District Council up to a maximum loan of £118,750. This does not include new build homes. First time buyers will put down 5% of the property price, and South Kesteven will provide a cash backed indemnity of up to 20% as additional security. The local authority then earns interest on this amount. The first time buyer owns the property in its entirety, and will have access to a range of products at a lower rate of interest than would normally be available for this level of deposit. Those interested in the local scheme should visit their local branch of Lloyds TSB for more information.

The Len Pick Trust

A Registered Charity for Bourne

homas Leonard Pick, known to all as Len, a retired farmer and lifelong resident of Bourne, died in 2004. In his will, he decreed that his trustees were to form a charity which would benefit from the residue of his estate that he left and be known as The Len Pick Trust. As well as being a successful farmer and potato merchant, Len was the youngest ever councillor of the former Bourne Urban District Council which maintained a great interest in the community throughout his life. After his death, his trustees set to work to ensure the fulfilment of his wishes which were to benefit the town of Bourne and surrounding areas. It was launched in 2005 at the public presentation held in the Corn Exchange. The Trust commenced with an endowment of four million pounds and it was decided that the endowment would be invested and the annual income accruing therefrom would be available for charitable benefits for the town of Bourne. It is ran by ten trustees, four are the original trustees picked by Mr Pick. The website: www. lenpicktrust.org serves as a ‘virtual office’ and contains details of grant making criteria and policies as well as its Annual Reports. Grant application forms can also be downloaded from the website. The Trust is registered with the Charity Commission and complies with all relevant legislation. The trust is always happy to make grants to local organisations in response to particular areas of need. Over the past few years it has funded the fitting out of learning resource centres at Bourne Academy, Bourne Westfield and Bourne Abbey. The Trust has also helped the Willoughby School and Bourne Grammar School to obtain specialist status in their respective specialisms. Other diverse projects that have been assisted are the provision of a new ambulance for The Bourne Detachment of

The Red Cross, Provision of disabled changing facilities at Bourne Outdoor Swimming Pool and assisting with the re-roofing of the Darby & Joan Hall. One other activity which has proved immensely popular is the promotion of annual Memorial Evening held to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Mr Pick where notable speakers come to the town and talk of their experiences. This year Tessa Sanderson CBE, a six times Olympian, not only spoke at the evening, but also visited all the Bourne schools to share something of her experiences and dreams. The Trust is always pleased to consider applications for grants from local organisations and groups to help strengthen their role in making our town a better place to live and so honour our benefactor’s instructions, “for the general benefit of the townspeople of Bourne”.

Discovering... ..Bourne Wood

he town’s most beautiful natural amenity is Bourne Wood, 400 acres of forest that are managed for timber production as well as nature conservation and recreation and are open to the public at all times with many secluded paths and woodland trails that attract thousands of visitors each year. There has probably been continuous tree cover on this site for the last 8,000 years and the present species are a mixture of broadleaf and conifer of all ages and their diversity has created ideal conditions for a wide range of wildlife. Once owned by the successive Lords of the Manor of Bourne, the wood is now managed by the Forestry Commission. In past years, the trees were heavily felled, during the First World War, for instance, to provide props for the trenches, but there is now a policy of reestablishing the ancient forest. Many plants have survived and so make the woodland valuable in terms of conservation. The wild flowers that can be seen here in season include bluebells, primroses and wood anemone while fallow deer are abundant and you may catch a glimpse of their smaller, shy cousin, the muntjac. Deep in the woods are two lakes which were made by damming a small dip in the landscape

in 1972 and these have become watering holes for woodland inhabitants and home to ducks, herons, many aquatic animals and several species of fish. The pools are a mass of rushes and sedge, white water lilies float on the surface and yellow flag grows in the margins while deer come to drink here in the evenings and early mornings and their hoof prints can often be seen in the soft mud at the water’s edge. Other animals that frequent these glades are foxes, grey squirrels, owls, snakes, badgers and a wide variety of birds. Nightingales can be heard on summer nights and rare bats and dragonflies fly over the lakes at twilight. Seven species of bat have been identified including the rare Leisler’s bat which was first discovered in nesting boxes in 1991. There are many seats around the wood with small brass memorial plaques remembering past walkers and near to the main path from Beech Avenue is a copse of twenty small oak trees which were planted in 1999 by the Friends of Bourne Wood organisation as a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, who died tragically two years before, and the spot has been named Diana’s Glade.

any people know that their broadband package carries a maximum usage, i.e.; a defined maximum amount of data that can be downloaded over that broadband connection each month. However, what most people do not know is what this actually means. How much data is used if you listen to a radio station on your PC, view a site that is packed with large artwork or use the BBC iPlayer to catch up on the latest TV. A little more on this shortly, but first let’s use BT to look at the typical options available with regards broadband data usage.

So what does this mean in ‘real language’?

Obviously the greater the allowance the more that can be downloaded without additional costs being incurred. As a rough guide, BT state that 10Gb a month approximates to 15 movies or 2500 music files. 40Gb increases this to 59 movies, 10,200 music files. All well and good but the actual usage is made up of a variety of elements; online games, internet surfing, streaming internet radio, films, downloading music, windows updates, antivirus updates, games console online services, smartphone data services, Kindle/ebook downloads etc;. A real maze of data. For example, if you listen to BBC radio at the higher quality (HD), this is sent to you at 2.7MB/min, this in turn means that if you listen to that radio station for 61 hours in the month (only 2 hours a day), you will have used up 10Gb of your broadband data allowance! TIP: listen to it at the standard quality stream to reduce the amount of data that is sent to you via your broadband connection.

How do I monitor my broadband usage?

Some of the main broadband suppliers provide a monitoring service online. For example, BT provide a link direct from your account page. This will show you both your contracted usage and your total usage to date. Note that if you go above your allowance your broadband provider will likely make additional charges. There are a number of tools available for your devices that will allow you to monitor your broadband data usage. The main PC in the household is often the major user of broadband data. One of the best of these tools for Vista/Windows 7 is Network Meter http://addgadgets.com/network_meter/. TBBMeter from http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter.html offers support for XP as well as Vista/Windows 7. Apple users can utilise Net Monitor at http://homepage.mac. com/rominar/net.html. These tools will allow you to set up your contracted allowance and report ‘live’ on your current usage. Similar apps are available for smartphone (iPhone, Android etc;) and tablet systems (iPad etc;).

Triple Heater

In traditional Oriental medicine, treatment is based on the balancing of energy or Chi in your body. The energy travels in channels or lines that are commonly called meridians.

here is an energy channel or meridian for most of your internal organs: lung, heart, stomach, liver and others. The energy of each organ performs a myriad of functions in this paradigm. For example if your heart Chi is needs help then along with the standard heart problems then the holistic therapist will suspect emotional issues and distorted sense of “self”. We do know this in the west. We talk about love coming from the heart and when we are being true to ourselves we “play it from the heart”. There is one meridian in oriental medicine that does not coincide with anything that we know in the west. It is called the “Triple Heater”. An easy way to think about it is as your body’s thermostat. If you are the sort of person who is easily affected by hot or cold weather then

perhaps you need some work on the triple heater? Triple heater also controls the flow of fluids throughout the body. Recently as the weather has become warmer, several of my clients have struggled with swollen joints. Treatment of the triple heater has helped to reduce the swelling. Our integration with the environment is influenced as well. If you are socially tense or over cautious this can usually be eased by treating this meridian. If you cannot adjust to weather changes, feeling awkward or shy in company, have oedema in the joints or lower abdomen, keep catching colds, have tension in the arms, neck or upper mid back area then treatment for the triple heater can bring you relief in a pleasurable and unexpected kind of way.

Here is some sensible advice:

Exercises - to prevent Repetitive Strain! (please note: stop these exercises if you feel any pain otherwise you can do more harm than good). In your texting hand:

• Tap each finger, one by one, with the thumb of the same hand. Repeat x 5 • Pull your thumb firmly with the other hand. Repeat x 5

• Wrap an elastic band around the tips of fingers, one by one and thumb and open your hand against the resistance. Repeat x 20 • Palms down wrap an elastic band around

each thumb and palm and force apart. Repeat x 20

• Tap the palm and back of your hand on your thigh as quickly as you can. Repeat x 20 • Massage thumb web, back of forearm and front of forearm for two minutes.

• Press and rub in a circular motion the painful nodules in those muscles for 30 seconds for each nodule.

• Reach up high with both arms and shake your hands. Reach down low with both arms and shake. Repeat x 3. • Arms at 45 degrees squeeze them behind your back you whilst gripping the arms.

• If it still hurts after a week of doing exercises wrap an ice pack on sore hand and arm parts. Do not put ice directly on the skin but wrap in a thin cloth or piece of kitchen roll for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off. Repeat x 3. Studies have found that smoking makes you perceive pain more intensely. The use of tobacco seems to have some effect on the nervous system by increasing perceptions and sensations of pain. Quitting smoking can be tremendously benefiting.

Healthier for Longer

Help your dogs to stay healthier for longer and reduce the need for medicines in later life by trying some of these simple but effective pieces of advice I have picked up from various sources over the years.

f your pets are suffering from itchy skin, excessive moulting, anal gland problems, bad odours or bad breath then a simple change to their diet may work. Some foods that are specially formulated for specific problems may get rid of these problems. They're usually hypoallergenic and free from additives which can cause irritations and if you contact the food companies direct they will normally send you free samples to try. Also everyday products can help such as apple cider vinegar which can be used in combating fleas, ear mites and infections and itchy sore skin when used in a variety of ways. For an upset stomach, try cooked white rice. Cook the rice according to package directions and feed this to your dog for a couple of days instead of their normal food. On the second day you can add chopped up chicken or turkey to the rice. It's the white rice that will settle their stomachs and cleanse their system of whatever was causing it to be upset. If your dog is getting older, walks are taking their toll and joints seem stiff then Cod Liver Oil and Glucosamine are as good for our four legged friends as they are for us along with a diet that is made for joint care you should see

an improvement in approximately 6 weeks. Hydrotherapy and swimming is another way to help improve the mobility of an aging dog with arthritis, not to mention how it will speed up rehabilitation from an operation for any aged dog and recovery from a stroke. Some behaviours that we may purchase medicines for such as stress, anxiety and car sickness could benefit from some professional training or therapy such as behavioural training or Tellington TTouch therapy, often used on humans and horses as well as dogs. Although these courses may be as expensive if not more so than some medicines, it is a way of treating the source of a problem so it does not reoccur e.g. fireworks night, car rides, leaving the house, rather than the symptom every time it reoccurs. Having a dog is an expensive responsibility as we all know but sometimes there are some preventative measures, some simple treatments and complimentary activities we can put in to place to limit the unnecessary expense, allowing us to buy them that special toy for a day out socialising in the woods! There are many alternatives to try for our beloved pets but of course if you're worried you should always seek a vets advice.

1) Roses

Remember to check roses regularly for pests and blackspot and other diseases, and spray if necessary with a recommended fungicide and/or insecticide. And if your garden is in need of some flower power, roses are the perfect solution.

2) Lawn preparation for September

September is the best time to sow a new lawn or lay turf, but it pays to prepare the area now. To beat perennial weeds, spray with a weed killer. Once the turf has been removed, work over the soil to a depth of 9 inches with a fork and spade, removing weed roots and large stones and incorporate compost or composted bark. Rake and level the soil, walk over it to settle it, rake again and then leave it bare to allow weed seeds to germinate. These can be sprayed or hoed off ready for sowing or turfing next month.

3) Planning autumn planting

Start planning that new border. Look for plants with a long flowering period and those that have two or more seasons of interest with flowers, fruit, colourful stems and interesting foliage. Choose plants with different foliage colours and shapes and remember that while evergreens help bring structure and winter interest they may need livening up with deciduous plants. Use winter and spring bedding plants to increase the seasons of interest, and plant bulbs for extra splashes of colour.

4) Vine weevil

As vine weevil beetles tend to lay eggs in late summer and early autumn it pays to protect vulnerable plants in pots – such as Begonias, Fuchsias, Cyclamen and Sedums – with Vine Weevil Killer. A wide range of pests can be controlled by spraying with Ultimate Bug Killer.

eter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epicscaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper;s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weaspons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane. The film begins in 2005, when NASA discovers an extrasolar planet with conditions similar to Earth. On the chance that it contains intelligent life, NASA transmits a powerful signal from a communications array in Hawaii, which will be boosted by a satellite in orbit. Around the same time, the talented but undisciplined slacker Alex Hopper attempts to impress a woman by getting her a chicken burrito, the result of which sees him arrested for breaking into a convenience store which is seen through the security cameras. The woman is Samantha Shane, daughter of United States Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Terrance Shane, who in turn is the superior of Commander Stone Hopper, Alex’s older brother. Fed up and infuriated at Alex for lack of motivation and possibly ruining his own career, Stone forces him to join the United States Navy. By 2012, Alex is a lieutenant and the Tactical Action Officer aboard the Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS John Paul Jones, while Stone is the commanding officer of USS Sampson. Alex is also in a relationship with Samantha and wants to marry her, but is afraid to ask her father for permission. Meanwhile five alien ships arrive in response to the NASA signal sent earlier, and what follows is a battle between the ships as familiy loyalty, love, life and death. Battleship will keep you on the edge of your seat, and will be a certain favourite amongst alien fans.
