elcome to your fantastic new-look Discovering Bourne. It’s an issue that’s bursting at the seams with interesting features, information, advice plus a great competition for our younger readers. July is the month that school breaks up and who better to feature on our front cover than a bunch of Year 6 children from Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy, all excited as they leave school to move up to big school. In this issue we welcome the Bourne Business Chamber who will be advertising every other month. The BBC is an organisation which supports and works with businesses within Bourne for the benefit of the community and its individual members. Individuals, charities, schools, local government representatives and similar are also encouraged and welcomed as members. Councillor Sue Woolley Hello everyone, firstly for those who do not know me I am County Councillor Sue Woolley and it is my privilege to represent the Bourne Abbey division. Following the recent County Council elections we are now well and truly back into the day to day work within the Council. As well as representing my Bourne constituents ‘banging the drum’ very loudly on their behalf up in Lincoln, I have also been given the extra responsibility as a member of the Executive. One of the jobs within this role is to chair the new Health & Wellbeing Board and I’m now going to tell you a bit more about what it does. Lincolnshire’s Health and Wellbeing Board formally meets four times a year and is a committee of Lincolnshire County Council but works as a partnership with representation from local G.P’s, county council members and senior officers, district councils and most important of all, the Chairman of Lincolnshire Healthwatch. The partnership is there to ensure that local plans for how services are delivered match the jointly agreed outcomes in the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy and challenge those plans if they do not support the agreed outcomes for Lincolnshire. There are three key areas that the Board have to ensure happens • To encourage health and social care services to work together and jointly commission the contracts to provide better care for local people • To prepare and produce a statement of the evidence of good and bad health and wellbeing in the publication Lincolnshire’s Joint Strategic Need Assessment • and then using that evidence to consult with the public and produce a Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy for Lincolnshire. The latest version of the strategy has five themes • Promoting healthy Lifestyles– people are supported to lead healthier lives (stop smoking, take physical exercise) • Improve the health and wellbeing of older people – older people are able to live life to the

full and feel part of the community • Deliver high quality care for major causes of ill health and disability – people are prevented from developing long-term health conditions, have them identified early and if they do develop are supported effectively to manage them • Improve the health and social outcomes for children and reduce inequalities – ensure all children get the best possible start in life and achieve their potential • To tackle the social determinants of health– people’s health and wellbeing is improved through addressing wider factors of health that affect the whole community (housing, finance, crime, etc.). There are also three subjects that are included within all the above five themes, that the public decided were important to ensure that there was a rounded view of how to help support an improvement in the health and wellbeing of the community and they are • Carers • Mental health • Inequalities Lincolnshire Health and Wellbeing Board has now started its formal journey after 18 months of working in a shadow form and is looking forward to supporting and delivering improved health and wellbeing of the population with integrated teams being jointly contracted to provide those services and using Lincolnshire Healthwatch as the voice of the public to make sure we deliver. As a regular provider of talks on subjects such as rogue traders and distraction burglars, I find that within these forums, there is one topic that consumers raise - the subject of “NUISANCE CALLS”. For some people, it is a passing annoyance, but there is a more serious side to nuisance calls that is having a detrimental effect on many older and vulnerable people, causing immense distress and intimidation. Historically, homeowners could register with the TPS (Telephone Preference Service) in order for their number to be eliminated from lists used by marketing companies, but due to the majority of calls now coming from overseas call-centres, TPS is unable to police them. So what can be done? Thankfully, the consumer champion “Which?” has launched a campaign entitled “Calling time on Nuisance Calls”. They gave the main regulators 12 weeks to form a joint taskforce to stop unwanted calls and texts but the time is now up and, although some progress has been made, there needs to be a new tougher approach led by the government and they need everyone to pledge their support. Recognising Symptoms of Arthritis in the Hands Women are more likely than men to have arthritis in their hands, and often people experience arthritis symptoms in their hands before other signs of arthritis show up. Different forms of arthritis affect the hands in different ways. For example, osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, cartilage can wear down in all the joints in the fingers and thumb. Symptoms of arthritis in the hands may include: • Pain in some or all of the joints, including joints of the fingers, wrists, and thumbs • The growth of bony knobs on finger joints • Numbness in fingers • Painful joints in the cold. • Difficulty with motions that require gripping and twisting, such as opening jars The progression of arthritis in the hands can actually be measured, joint damage of osteoarthritis is usually seen on X-rays.

Exercises That Help Relieve Arthritis in the Fingers and Hands

If someone is pain free, it is critical to keep joints in good range of motion. Simple shoulder shrugs, wrist, and finger range of motion exercises help keep joint range of motion. Being pain free is the key, I stress this to my patients especially when doing exercises intended to build strength. When pain occurs, rest and pain management may be a better bet. Try these range-of-motion exercises to keep your hands, fingers, and thumbs (which affect about 60 percent of grip strength) flexible and to ease symptoms of arthritis in the fingers and in the hands overall: • Close your fist and then gradually open your

hand, stretching your fingers out, then close slowly into a fist again. • Make circle motions with your thumb, keeping it straight. • Stretch your thumb away from the palm of your hand, then use it to touch each fingertip. Repeat these exercises 3 to 10 times daily. Stop if you feel pain in a joint or if you’re experiencing additional pain (lasting more than two hours) once you’re done. Some people find that doing these hand exercises under warm water is helpful. If you have osteoarthritis, you may need to wear a splint, wear a compression glove, or use another type of support to help reduce wear and tear on your joints during your daily activities. You can also try squeezing a soft ball to build grip strength and help lessen symptoms of osteo -arthritis in your hands.

Just Breathe! Can you remember when you were younger, if you became upset or stressed about something that common advice was to “take a big deep breath and calm down”. Or how about after difficult negotiations, it is quite normal to sigh.

aking a deep breath and sighing are just two of many breathing methods that we all instinctively know that use our breathing to alter the way that we feel. Breathing, the emotions and our physical wellbeing are all inextricably linked. This is a concept that is familiar to anybody who has studied Tai Chi or meditation. It is not just the Orientals who knew about this – the ancient Greeks spoke a lot about the importance of correct breathing as did Shakespeare. Modern science is in complete agreement with these venerable sources of knowledge. Simply speaking, to the modern biologist deep breathing activates the parasympathetic or “relax and digest” systems and rapid breathing activates the sympathetic or “fight and flight” systems.

There is an answer though - and thankfully it is an easy one! If we can switch our breathing from shallow fast breathing to deep, slow and relaxed breathing then we will allow our nervous systems to “switch” from the busy fight or flight mode to relaxation. When we do this our bodies and minds relax, our emotions settle and we can even open the doorway to more spiritual feelings. This is why the Taoist adepts and Yoga masters talk so much about breathing.

If we feel panicky or stressed, our breathing can become rapid and shallow and our body shuts down the non-vital systems for survival. The ability to rest, digest food, empathise and many others (even lovemaking!) are either shut down or partially closed down if we are in “fight of flight” mode. It is actually quite easy to get stuck into “fight or flight” mode. Some people never really get out of the “fight or flight” mode and do not even manage to get a decent sleep in the evening – only for it all to start again tomorrow!

Try this – just sit down and listen to your breathing. Let your breathing become slower, deeper and quieter for three to four minutes. That’s it! Easy! The big question – how did you feel after it? If learning to control your breathing for three of four minutes can make you feel relaxed – think how much benefit could be had from really working with your breath in arts like Tai chi and meditation.

Sporting Spotlight Rugby Team Spirit at Bourne Rugby Club If the weekend of 15th and 16th June is anything to go by then it was a weekend to remember at Bourne Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC). The equivalent of a rugby team (20) for a match turned out to help carry out some much needed work on improving the clubhouse in readiness for the new season in September. It was made possible by a grant from the Rugby Football Union’s ‘NatWest RugbyForce’ programme which enabled us to buy equipment and materials for the work.

A game for all ages

Club members of all ages came to the club to paint the changing rooms, paint the outside walls, re-build walls, trim hedges, put up new railings, and move floodlights so that we can start the 2013/2014 season with a fresh outlook, a new social area and more space for our thriving minis and juniors section, and the growing senior section to train and play on. And, all of the workers that weekend were fed and watered by our excellent kitchen team. And, those twenty people epitomised what club rugby is all about, namely team spirit, teamwork, a good sense of humour and a willingness to ‘muck in’.

We were lucky to get some help from companies for the weekend. Dulux donated all of the paint. Speedy Hire Services lent us lots of equipment including cherry pickers and hole borers. Our local butchers even helped us out with bacon and sausages to feed everyone. All of this work will make our club more attractive to players and members alike who can come up and enjoy the sociable atmosphere as 18

well watching or playing the game we all love this season.

Enjoy rugby

Rugby has changed hugely in the last few years for the better. Right from the outset, young players are encouraged to have fun so they learn to play rugby safely and for the right reason - enjoyment. As they progress, they learn more skills and the values of rugby, which are teamwork, respect, discipline, enjoyment and sportsmanship. The NatWest RugbyForce weekend was a great success and we look forward to lots of new players and members joining us at the end of the summer to enjoy rugby too at Milking Nook Drove.

How to get more power off the tee Club golfers tend to tee the ball down too low with the driver. This causes a steeper angle of attack into the ball, an increase in spin and a loss of power and accuracy. My tip, tee the ball up higher so that the tee is just in the ground and play the ball a little nearer your front foot. With life expectancy increasing, financial planning is becoming increasingly important. If you are thinking of saving for retirement, then you might consider a pension is the best way to ensure you have enough to live on when you are older. However, this is not the only way to achieve your retirement goals and, in particular, Isa’s can be a useful tool.

Your pension payments will qualify for tax rebates upfront at your highest rate of income tax, but then the income you receive, once you have taken out your taxfree lump sum, will be taxable. With an Isa, contributions are made out of taxed income but any withdrawals are tax-free. Also, be aware your pension income counts towards your personal tax-free allowance while your Isa withdrawals do not. As such, the choice of pensions or Isa’s

can seem a straightforward question of rates. If someone receives higher rate tax relief on their pension contributions, but is then only paying lower rate tax on their income at retirement, pensions make better sense. For those whose income may be greater in retirement, the opposite is true. However, it is not so clear-cut. The tax rebates are important as they add value upfront and investors enjoy the effect of compounding on their portfolios. This will influence the size of annuity that can be bought. Nevertheless, an Isa is much more flexible. Annuities in particular can be inflexible and once bought, leave little or nothing in the pot. Also, with a pension, you have to wait until you are 55 to make withdrawals, whereas an Isa can be accessed at any time. Internet Browsers – a choice As I visit my clients I often find that they are unaware that there are different ways available for browsing the internet. Although many are aware that there are different web browsers available, most use the one that it is bundled with their system when purchased; Internet Explorer on a PC, Google Chrome on an Android Tablet, Safari on an Apple MAC, iPad, iPhone etc. Let’s clarify the Google situation first. Google is a company, one that gathers and sells information, it is not a browser. So bottom line, when you go to that familiar Google home page to search the web you are actually connecting to a large corporation’s home page and entering data on their servers. The free service they provide for you is to then search the Internet on your behalf, it is the browser that does the work and which connects you to the site that you want to visit. The more common browsers in use today are:

Which is the best?

A question I am often asked. The answer? – it is very subjective and down to personal opinion. They all have their pros and cons and you will find that people are very protective of their choice when you ask them for advice. The good news is that you don’t have to use the same one all the time. You can have any combination, or even all of the above, loaded on your system and even on some tablet devices. For what it’s worth I tend towards a combination of Internet Explorer and Chrome on my PC but I use Opera on my Apple iPhone. As a web designer I have all of

the above on my system as websites need to be checked across all of these to ensure maximum compatibility. My advice to you is to try the different options and see which one works best for you. Performance wise there is little to choose between each if you are using the latest version.

..the Outdoor Swimming Pool by Rex Needle

he outdoor swimming pool on the edge of the Abbey Lawn which is now open for the summer season has been the place for a dip on a hot summer’s day for almost a century and is now one of the oldest lidos in the country. The present amenity is the result of hard work by a dedicated band of volunteers over the years but has little in common with its early use as a carp pond to provide food for the monks of Bourne Abbey. During the years following the Great War of 1914-18, there was an upsurge in the provision of leisure amenities and a swimming pool for the town was high on the agenda with the old fish pond the most suitable place, having become a popular haunt for local lads taking a dip during the summer months. In 1922, a committee was formed to make it suitable for bathing, including the erection of dressing rooms and an entrance from Coggles Causeway. The official opening by Lady Kesteven was held on Saturday 12th August although the pool was primitive by today’s standards, unheated and with corrugated iron sides, and swimmers could often feel the eels wriggling between their toes as they walked on the muddy bottom. The pool was taken over by Bourne United Charities with the acquisition of the Abbey Lawn in 1931 and since then the pool has progressed

with the regular addition of new facilities and is now just under the official Olympic length of 50 metres and is heated to a pleasant 27-30 degrees C during its opening period from midMay to early September. There are indoor and outdoor changing rooms with lockers and toilets, lawns with seating and picnic tables, attractive gardens with hanging baskets, a refreshment area, sweet and snack shop and barbecues for hire. All of this in a most pleasant part of the town, surrounded by mature trees and a magnificent view of Bourne Abbey. Qualified lifeguards are on duty at all times while first aid and life-saving equipment are kept continuously at the poolside. In 1990, after it had become part of South Kesteven District Council’s leisure activities programme, the pool survived the threat of closure but was saved by a vigorous public protest campaign which led to the formation of the Outdoor Pool Preservation Trust to secure its future and it is now regarded as one of the best places in Britain to swim outdoors.

This month some good news – recently we have found that many of the best lenders have reduced their interest rates – of particular interest to many have been the attractive two and five year fixed rate deals. Many of us ‘of a certain age’ can remember interest rates in the mid teens for a while when we were struggling with our first mortgage. Equity release enables you to get a sum to spend as you wish, or a regular income. It sounds like a great idea and it can be but you need to ensure you are aware of all the facts before you proceed. The money you receive from an equity release will be tax free but any income received from investing the money may increase the amount of income tax you have to pay. If you take out an equity release and your circumstances change for example get married or decide to live with a partner in your property, the plan may come to an end on your death and your spouse or partner may no longer be able to remain in the house. It will reduce the size of your estate and your families inheritance, so it may be worth talking to them about your plans. When you consider taking out an equity release, you should think about the impact it may have on any benefits you are receiving, you also need to be aware that an equity release may affect future benefit entitlement. Equity release is a big decision which shouldn’t be taken lightly. It might not be the best or only solution available to you.

Playing with scale

Whether you have a large or small house you have the ability to play with scale. Architects and designers have done this for centuries; think of massive monuments that impress, skyscraper buildings that exert dominance, cathedral spaces that inspire awe. We interact with the landscape and buildings that surround us and in our homes we want this to be a positive experience. Generally we find small rooms cosy but some people find them cramped and claustrophobic. Large rooms, however, can be disappointingly cold and unfriendly so how you decorate and furnish them is really important. To achieve grandeur and elegance in a large room is just as difficult as creating a welcoming comfortable atmosphere in a small room. Many people shy away from structural alterations but sometimes the simplest of changes can make the biggest of differences. Look up. look down, ‘see’ through the ceiling and floors and, taking into account how your property has been built, consider how you might gain extra space. I recall one of my clients being ecstatic about a suggestion I made for changing the top of the staircase in her home. It resulted in a dramatic improvement and didn’t break the bank. Double height space was achieved which meant that light flooded onto both floors and she could decorate with more flair and panache as the proportions of the hall, stairs and landing were completely transformed. Scale involves thinking in three dimensions and it is one of the most important aspects of design. If you need any help with this give me a call. Westfield Rocks

he school hall was filled with the sound of music as over 100 children performed at Bourne Westfield’s Summer Music Concert. The diversity of music and eclectic range of instruments amazed the 200 strong audience. Children from 6 to 16 performed individually

and collectively with passion, confidence and not a little ability! Pupils past and present wowed the audience with their dazzling performances. Samba, jazz and rock bands beat a rhythm that had the parent’s feet tapping, whilst there were also very impressive renditions from clarinet, flute and guitar ensembles and solo performances on the drums, violin, piano, guitar and harp. The year 1/2 choir captivated the room with their action packed singing. The evening was brought to a close with a moving performance of Over the Rainbow by the year 5/6 choir. Parents and friends have the opportunity to experience the show in the comfort of their own homes with the production of a music CD – The Sounds of Westfield 2013 – kindly sponsored by the Bourne Round Table. Copies are available from the school office. The whole event was co-ordinated and organised by the Westfield Music Team led by Becky Beavis.

Philip (my husband) and I have always wanted a dog. We love animals and have three pampered cats. Our lifestyle just wasn't suitable and a dog is a big decision and lifestyle choice. Three years ago we started our own business and we work from home. It was then that I realised we could have a dog because we would be around a lot and we have time to walk. We were aware that dogs were ending up in rescue centres like the Three Counties through no fault of their own, family break ups , cruelty etc. We decided to foster because it seems that the dogs get adopted better. If you foster a dog you can find out whether they are good with cats, dogs, children, and so on, and pass that onto potential adopters. When we chose Jasper we didn't intend on permanent foster. That has evolved over a period of time. Over the first ten days of fostering him it became apparent there was something very wrong with him. And in the tenth day he was diagnosed with Megaoesophagus. Basically his oesophagus doesn't work. Therefore he regurgitates his food and water before it gets to the stomach. It's incurable but manageable. Solution is simple. He has a special high chair made by my husband to have all his meals and water. We found this idea on the Internet. Jasper now thrives and looks great. And just wants to be like a normal dog. From what we know of the condition it can be

life limiting if not managed and he has just had aspirational pneumonia. Although you would never know to look at him. We would foster again in a heartbeat.

One of the ways we are trying to ease this is by building a network of foster homes who look after a dog for us until a new home is found. Often it will be someone who already has a dog who wants to help. “However, fostering works well for older people who do not feel a long term commitment is right for them. Fostering is also appropriate for people
