It’s
A word from
your Mayor – David Higgs
I
did say that August would be a quieter month for us as Mayor and Mayoress but we did attend Digby Court Summer Fête when they raised an astonishing £980 and the Abbey Residential Home Fête when they celebrated being open for three years. Lots of stalls – the cake stall always a must and we were serenaded through the afternoon by Nick Glover which both visitors and residents enjoyed. Again it was a privilege to meet the residents who always have a story to tell us and also to meet the dedicated staff who look after our wonderful elderly. Although it was a quiet time on the civic side we had a family wedding when our son Piers married his fiancée Liz at Thornaugh Church. It was a beautiful service and we were blessed with perfect weather. I was privileged to drive bride and father to church and bride and groom to Barnsdale in our 1934 Morris car - almost as many photos taken of the old car as of the bride! It was great to have all our family together for this occasion with the five grandchildren each having important parts to play in the ceremony. My wife and I also enjoyed doing the Walk Ten for Marie Curie Care at Grimsthorpe Castle: a lovely way to raise money by walking through the Grimsthorpe Estate on a warm summer’s evening although we were both very ready to sit and eat our picnic supper and watch the firework display.
I am now arranging our Civic Charity Dinner for October 18th in the Corn Exchange, all are welcome to buy tickets for that event from the Town Clerk, this is going to be a fun event with delicious food, live entertainment from Steve Price and a chance for you to support three local charities. One of our Charities is the Bourne Branch of Disability Lincs which provides disabled people with the chance to meet each week for a coffee and a chat and when funds allow a trip out. This is a desperately important service for these people because of their disabilities they are unable to get out and socialise so feel quite isolated. At this point in time they only have enough funding for five people to take advantage of this service and it costs £65 each week in transport costs. They also are given advice on disability aids and benefits etc.

Our second charity is the newly formed FoodBank which is being run by the Churches together with the Trussell Trust. People of Bourne have been so very generous with donations of food but, of course, it does need financial backing to keep it running so we are hoping again for your support with this one. I did mention in last month’s letter about our wonderful schools here in Bourne and I have decided to support the Willoughby School in a special project for some new equipment that will help to support the pupils at that school.

The safest way to source a local tradesman 8
By Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com Dear readers, Most of
us will be aware of the term ‘rogue trader’ and each year, Trading Standards receive thousands of complaints about these uninvited traders and a large majority of them relate to home maintenance work such as roofing, tarmacing and paving, garden and tree surgery, insulation, general building work, burglar alarms and other services. The work or service offered can sometimes be unnecessary, overpriced, of a poor standard or not done at all. Typically they have no formal training to carry out the work offered and some may have links with distraction burglars. It is important that people have the confidence to say no to doorstep traders and take the time to think about the service being offered. The following is advice on how people can avoid being scammed by rogue doorstep traders: • Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, DO NOT agree to on the spot house repairs without taking advice. • Be wary of special offers or warnings that your house is unsafe. • Don’t allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out. If you ask them to leave and they don’t, contact the police on 999. • Do not make snap decisions. If you feel that any work needs carrying out on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision. • Don’t ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this!
If you have an experience with a rogue trader, please report it by telephoning 101 and or for live incidents where the rogue trader is still at the property, or is due to return, contact the police on 999. The police have a protocol for dealing with these incidents and welcome your contact.

Getting into the Spirit of things at At Sainsbury’s we love to get into the “spirit” of things at Halloween and this year will be no different. We are running a colouring competition in the Café for children, with prizes for the best entries, 6 and unders and 6 to 11 years. It is 50p to enter, with all proceeds going to our Local Charity Partner this year, Dementia Support South Lincs. We are also holding a pumpkin carving competition, just bring in a photograph of you and your pumpkin and the best entry will win £25.00 Sainsbury’s vouchers. Entries for both competitions need to be in by Saturday 9th November please, when judging will then take place.
Have you ever wondered what to do with the left over pumpkin? Why not try this simple, but delicious recipe with the children. Method
Pumpkin and orange spider muffins Fantastic for Halloween, kids will love these moist pumpkin cupcakes with their spiderweb tops.
You will need 175g Stork baking liquid | 175g golden caster sugar | 300g self raising flour, sieved | 3 medium eggs, beaten | 5 tablespoons milk | ½ teaspoon baking powder | 100g cooked pumpkin or butternut squash, mashed | 50g chocolate and hazelnut spread | Zest of 1 orange | 115g icing sugar | 55g plain chocolate, melted, or use the chocolate spread | Strawberry laces, to decorate | Liquorice sweets (or other black sweets), to decorate
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Place 12 muffin cases into a muffin tray. 2. Place the Stork baking liquid, caster sugar, flour, eggs, milk and baking powder into a bowl, and beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is smooth. 3. Stir in the pumpkin mash and orange zest until combined. Divide half the mixture evenly between the muffin cases, so that each case is about a third full. 4. Add half a teaspoon of chocolate spread to each muffin case, then top with the remaining pumpkin cake mix to cover the chocolate spread. 5. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the cakes are risen and golden in colour. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. 6. Mix a little orange juice with the icing sugar until you achieve a thick icing, you may need to add a few more drops of juice as you mix. Spread the orange icing over the muffins. 7. Pipe the melted chocolate in 4 circles on top of the icing, then drag a skewer (or cocktail stick) outwards from the middle to create a cobweb effect. 8. Place sweets and laces on top to look like a spider. www.discoveringbourne.co.uk | October 2013

Thai-ri -riffic Sassi’s!
A new cafe has opened its doors in Bourne serving up a selection of classic dishes that combine the flavours of Thai cuisine. And even better – owner Alan Collins has revealed exciting plans to expand even more by the end of November. Alan runs Sassi’s along with his partner Morn and her family and the shop is named after her daughter. He said: “We are offering Thai food as a noodle bar although I have to say it is more restaurant quality food as opposed to fast food and at cafe prices. We have a dozen dishes which are displayed in a buffet-style server. The menu varies to ensure that there will always be
something new to try. Pricing from £3.90 to take away and £5 to dine in make our exotic food extremely affordable. We also offer a delivery service for orders over £10”. At present the cafe is open from 7.30 to 4.30, but will be opening in the evening soon.
The shop also has a patisserie display and sells cakes and gateaux to go with its luxury coffee 12

The shop also has a patisserie display and sells cakes and gateaux to go with its luxury coffee. The all day breakfast is served from 7.30 including a traditional English breakfast and bacon and sausage sandwiches, with bacon and sausages being supplied by the highly regarded Hargraves Butchers as are the other meat products on offer. You can therefore be sure that Sassi’s offers very high quality food. Prices are £4 for a standard breakfast or £5 for large. The restaurant has a mix of comfy armchairs and sofas to relax in and dining tables and chairs for sit-down eating. Alan said: “One of the characteristics of the place is that one of the walls is dedicated to local art by Lincolnshire artists. There are 50-60 works of art on display and for sale and these have attracted a lot of interest.” The restaurant has an award winning Thai chef who uses locally sourced Ingredients and is ably assisted by Morn and her team. By the end of October Alan intends to have stage two completed. The public area is being enlarged and the premises are being reconfigured to increase the amount of space by over 50 percent. He said: “We will be offering a full blown a la carte restaurant service in addition to our existing services and products. We are planning to become licenced to sell wines and beers and we will be offering bookings for Christmas parties” Local people have already been supporting the restaurant. Alan said: “In the couple of weeks we’ve been open we’ve been extremely surprised with the very positive reception that we’ve had. We are very very pleased with the reaction and the level of trade we’ve attracted.”

Knee Pain Causes: Treatment
If you sustain a knee injury whether low, medium or high severity, it is best to apply ice to the injured knee immediately. Ice should be applied for 20 minutes on the injured area, then 20 minutes off. This should be repeated for a 12 to 24 hour period. If the severity of the injury is low, then icing, rest and gently stretching should aid in recovering the knee. If severity is medium to high then there is a chance that icing, rest and gentle stretching will not aid in fixing the knee - in these cases please seek professional advice. The cause of the knee pain that you are experiencing will determine the treatment plan for the pain. It is thus important for you to understand the symptoms of knee pain that you have before beginning any type of treatment program. If you are unsure about the type of knee pain that you have or how severe your condition actually is, always err on the side of caution and seek out a medical opinion prior to launching a treatment program. Let’s look at some of the common treatments for knee pain causes:
Rest
The most obvious best treatment for many knee pain causes is to allow the joint to rest, and heal. Resting the knee joint will allow for any inflammation to subside, and is often the only step that is required in order to relieve pain in the knee. For severe symptoms of knee pain, the use of crutches may also be beneficial.
Ice and heat application
Ice packs and heat applications are often used as a first line of defence when knee pain symptoms arise. Alternating between cold and hot packs can help reduce swelling and pain in the knee.
Stretching
Simple stretching exercises that work the
tendons and muscles around the joint can help to alleviate knee pain.
Antiinflammatory medicines
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) are commonly recommended by doctors for knee pain relief. This is especially true for knee pain that results from arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis.
Physical therapy.
Depending on the extent of your knee pain and knee pain causes, you may need to seek out rehabilitative therapy with a qualified professional. Good advice on treatment can help to increase strength, regain mobility, and help you return to an enhanced level of daily activity.
Cortisone injections. Cortisone
injections are typically injected into the joint of the knee to reduce inflammation but only as a last resort. In sum, getting to the root of knee pain causes is the best way to find the appropriate treatment regimen for your particular knee pain.

Pump?
At school we learn that our heart is one of our most vital organs because it pumps blood around our bodies. Is there more to the heart than just a large muscle that pumps blood around our bodies?
O
riental medicine disagrees with the mechanistic version of the heart as a simple pump. They say that if we become depleted with our heart energy we will suffer with fatigue, restlessness, lack of memory amongst other issues. In Ayurveda medicine from India, our heart centre is the core of our being. If the heart is weakened then we can easily lose our sense of who and what we are which chimes with the Western concept of “playing from the heart”. We have all seen the mass of electrical signals that heart monitors in modern hospitals pick up. The electricity of the heart is complex. Surely if the heart were just a simple pump, evolution would have not needed such a complex control system for our hearts? Research reported in The Hearts Code (Persall 1998), shows a relationship between emotional state and the frequency spectrum of the signals from the heart. Feelings of love, caring and compassion or conversely of frustration and anger will affect the signals produced by the heart. The signals were measurably radiated into the space around the body and affect every cell in the body.
as this. If we can learn how to balance and control the emotions and create an attitude of loving kindness towards ourselves and others then we will affect the electrical signals that we and others pick up from our hearts. Disciplines such as meditation, healing, Tai chi, Shiatsu, Tao Yin, Yoga and many others all seek to do exactly that – create equanimity and love within our hearts. An ancient Indian spiritual book from the first century called the Nagarjuna summed up the idea “Great compassion penetrates into the marrow of the bone. It is the support for all living beings.” Perhaps we should be grateful to our hearts for more than the simple but vital task of forcing blood around our bodies?
The obvious fact that our emotions affect how we feel and how others around us feel is proven by the analysis of the electrical signals produced by our hearts. So, traditional healing systems from the Orient and suchlike are starting to converge with Western medicine in areas such

Concept’s 25-year Success Story Concept, a lovely little gift shop in North Street, is celebrating its 25th birthday this month with special events happening, please see in-store for details. The shop has had a succession of owners and is now owned by Dena Edis who took it on in partnership with Sharon Hood in 2002. Dena became the sole proprietor in 2006 and the shop is very much a family business with Dena’s sister, and occasionally her daughter, both working there. Dena said: “We stock a very varied range of gifts, British-made where possible. You can come in here, choose a gift, a card and the wrapping paper. We gift wrap too, so you can do the lot in one go. “We also offer a wish-list service for your special occasion; birthday, Christmas, wedding, etc, which is popular.” The shop also showcases some framed pictures by local artists alongside well-known brands such as Jellycat, Gisela Graham, Wax
Lyrical and Crabtree & Evelyn. Dena is happy to arrange out-ofhours viewing for small groups with mobility problems and she also makes seasonal visits to care homes and sheltered accommodation so those who are immobile can have the chance to choose gifts for their family and friends.

Bonfire Night bangers Whether you’re braving a barbecue or cooking in the kitchen, you can’t beat a banger on Bonfire Night. Hot, tasty sausages are always a winner with the children, and the adults love tucking in too. Sausages from Sandalls Butchers in West Street, Bourne contain a family-friendly minimum of 78% lean pork, along with pure breadcrumbs, salt and pepper and sage. When Owner Teresa Andrew took over the shop in 2010 she inherited Sandall’s sausages made to their own Lincolnshire recipe. Ironically it was exactly the same recipe as Teresa’s father used when he owned Fancourts butcher’s in Stamford! The shop sell a variety of sausages in other flavours including pork and stilton, and another one of her Grandad’s recipes which is a slightly more seasoned sausage. Named ‘Andrew’s Sausage’ it is more of a dinner sausage than the Lincolnshire ones, which are particularly great for breakfast. The shop’s ethos is to supply the highest quality, locally reared meat. Their pork comes from Porter's farm in Navenby, whilst beef and lamb are either purchased direct from local farms or from Melton Mowbray and Newark livestock markets. They only use "gilt" pigs (females who have never been pregnant) as these provide the best eating pork. They prefer heifers for beef, for the very same reason, and all beef is hung for a minimum of two weeks, allowing it to mature and tenderise naturally.
Teresa works alongside her brother Philip after taking over from Francis and Fred Sandall when they retired in March 2010. They come from a family of butchers beginning when Teresa’s grandfather George opened his butchers shop in Ketton which her parents took over and named Fancourts, then opening shops in Stamford and Ryhall. Philip bought Lincolnshire Meat Company, the abattoir in Grantham in 1998 enabling them to slaughter their own meat. Having their own abbatoir enables the shop to achieve farm to fork in less than 48 hours and Teresa is happy to talk to customers at length to our customers about their products, and provide usage and cooking guidance. She said: “We have well over a century's butchering experience between us!”

The key to pitching is to stay connected. The hands, arms, shoulders, hips and legs should always work together back and through impact. Here is a little exercise for you to try cross your hands across your shoulders and adopt a golfing posture. Now rotate a little to the right (left for left handers) and then rotate a little in the opposite direction, keeping the head central as if looking at the ball. This would be the movement for a 20/30yard pitch shot when holding a wedge. Allow yourself to feel the weight of the club swinging back and through the impact area. Happy golfing and remember to call me with any tips you want help with.

Batter than ever!
George’s Fish Bar on Cherry Holt Road, has been refurbished and now boasts a colourful and bright new funky interior with a 24seat dining area. The popular fish and chip shop already had the advantage of lots of free parking and now the extra free seating has given it an edge over competitors. George sells only fresh fish not frozen, delivered daily from Grimsby, and his shop achieved the maximum score of five in the Food Standard Agency’s Hygiene rating – living up to his slogan: ‘As good as people say’. Owned by Georgios Georgiou – known as George – the shop is the only fish bar in the area to offer a healthy grilled fish option, cooked to order on a specially imported Australian fish grill. George prides himself on using the highest quality vegetable oil which is double-filtered and changed daily. Gluten free days are held every Wednesday and chips are made from locally sourced potatoes, either Markies, or Maris Piper. Haddock and cod are both available, but 90% of the fish sold is haddock. George moved to Bourne from Leicester 11 years ago and brought with him his expertise gained from generations of fish and chip shops in his family. He opened his first shop in North Street and then a second fish bar in Cherry Hold Road in 2006. The new fish bar quickly became popular as customers could bypass the town centre and park easily. It’s state of the art cooking equipment meant speedy service and less waiting time in the queue – another reason to pop to George’s to feed a hungry family. The fish bar looks modern and is spotlessly clean. It’s blue and white tiles, neon lighting and brightly coloured murals on the wall give it a feel of an American diner. George said: “My vision was to give people in 22
Bourne the best fish and chips. The first and the most important thing I thought was fresh fish (not frozen) – with this I could win over the people of Bourne and this is now paying off, so a big thank you to all my customers.”

Waterside Garden Centre has a great choice of dwarf conifers available including Chamaecyparis Pygmaea Argentea and Juniperus Blue Star. These are ideal for patios as they will only grow to around 3ft in their lifetime. If you are looking for larger conifers we have a great range available including Cupressus Goldcrest & Thuja Starstruck. These varieties can grow much taller than most, while Taxus Baccata & Thuja Plicata Gelderland and are ideal for hedging. When planting your conifers, make sure the hole or pot you use is twice the size of the root ball to allow for maximum growth. As well planting new trees and shrubs in your garden, October is also the ideal time to start of your onion sets, shallots, garlic, rhubarb and asparagus. When you visit Waterside for Conifer Week, pick up 3 onion set packs for just £5 (see right). Plant the sets in shallow drills and cover them so the necks are just protruding from the soil. Onions should be given as long a growing season as possible to reach maximum size.

Motoring
By Brian and Mary Chapel Motor Repairs
Keeping safe in
Winter
Following what has been one of the best summers in recent years, it is now time to put away the shorts and T shirts ( apart from the very hardy) and start looking towards the winter. Hoping it is not as long and cold as last year, we have to plan for the worst. Cars are often overlooked until there is a problem. Things to check
Battery: Check terminals are clean and tight, most modern batteries are otherwise maintainance free, if in doubt don't hesitate to contact us at Chapel Motor Repairs. Lights (including brake and rear fog lights). Make sure you keep them clean and check they are working. A quick wipe over with a soft damp cloth can make a big difference to both you and other motorists. Screen wash: Use correct strength of screenwash liquid for winter and don't resort to washing up liquid - this will only make matters worse and block the pipes. Wipers: Check the condition of the rubber blades and don't forget the rear wiper (if you have one). Broken or split blades need to be replaced as soon as possible. Do not attempt to use your wipers until the window screen has defrosted. Tyres: Check the condition of your tyres for age related cracking, tread depth and pressures. Again if in doubt check with a garage. Under bonnet checks: Check fluid levels, oil and coolant, and remember to get your anti freeze strength checked as well.
Other things to consider
Winter tyres must be fitted to all four wheels
26
or not at all. In temperatures below 7 degrees, winter tyres are proven to work better than standard tyres in the wet, ice and snow and are well worth the expense. You can store your summer tyres in your garage. An alternative tyre is the all weather type, such as the Bridgestone A001. These can be left on during summer and winter, and have been shown to be very popular. As some parts of Scotland have already seen the first snow of winter, it is a good idea to start thinking what should you carry in the boot. Snow shovels are now available as fold away types. A couple of bits of old carpet or sacking could also come in useful to put under your tyres if you can't get a grip on icy surfaces. An extra coat, if you are planning a long journey, plus maybe a flask of hot water and a couple of sachets of soup, and a sachet of coffee or other beverage that can easily be mixed with hot water are other good items to consider. Make sure your mobile phone battery is fully charged. We hope you have safe winter motoring. If you are unsure of how to check your vehicle or have any queries or questions then please contact us on 01778 560444.

Technology Corner

Windows 8.1
Revenge of the Start Button As you may have read, or even experienced personally, Windows 8 was a bit of a disaster for Microsoft and was heavily criticised. Fundamentally the error they made was trying to make too many changes too quickly to the way the user interacts with the PC. Whilst a good interface for those with a tablet or touch screen PC, the Windows 8 Metro interface was a little cumbersome for standard PC users who were also faced with a steep learning curve and struggled to get to grips with the new ‘force-fed’ techniques. Thankfully Microsoft took the criticism on the chin and listened to the masses. As a result they have produced Windows 8.1, also known as Windows Blue which goes some way to address the issues. HOW MUCH WILL WINDOW8.1 COST? If you already have Windows 8 on your system then Windows 8.1 is FREE. However, if you are running an earlier version then you will need to purchase a new license. A Home User Licence costs around £80 but shop around for the best deal. If you are a business you will need to purchase a Windows Pro license. WHAT’S NEW IN WINDOWS 8.1 • The return of a START button which was stupidly removed in Windows 8. • You can now choose whether to start up to the Windows 8 touch screen based Metro interface or a traditional Windows desktop. • Improved customisation of the Windows 8 tile based Metro start screen. You can now more readily move tiles around as well as renaming and resizing them. The wallpaper is also now customisable so you can make the system look unique. • Improved Search tools to make it easier to find those missing documents or pictures. • Faster internet browsing with Internet Explorer 11. • Enhanced picture tools for viewing and editing. • A new email application. • Improved music and video streaming. • Improved security and networking to make it more viable for business user upgrades. SO SHOULD I NOW RUSH OUT AND BUY WINDOWS 8.1? If you have a touchscreen device I’d recommend making the switch. However, if you are already running Windows 7 then you are already running a highly acclaimed and stable operating system that
is well supported and secure. For those still running Windows XP or Vista, there are now benefits in making the switch, especially if you have a 64bit computer system. I’M REPLACING MY PC, SHOULD I BUY A WINDOWS 8 OR A WINDOWS 7 SYSTEM? Until recently I would have strongly advised that you stay with Windows 7. Now that Microsoft has addressed the user complaints, Windows 8.1 returns much of the familiar functionality lost in the initial v8 release. That said there is still a learning curve as things are different, but this is now much smaller and the 8.1 system will allow you to work with a familiar desktop whilst learning the new techniques at your own speed. If however you have no interest in changing to the new look, then stick with Windows 7. WANT TO KNOW MORE? Checkout the Microsoft site at http://windows. microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/preview For more technical hints and tips visit my blog at http://litespc.wordpress.com/

ore and more people want their own “place in the sun” so the ownership of property or land abroad has become increasingly popular.
A second home in the UK can sometimes present financial and legal problems but at least you are dealing with a familiar tax and legal regime. These problems can escalate with a foreign property or land , particularly in relation to succession law and tax issues. Currently Spain and France are the most popular countries for UK residents to buy property in and in both France and Spain there are succession rules. The laws of these countries provides that a certain proportion of your estate must pass to your children, unlike English law which allows you to leave your property to who you wish. Therefore, if you have your own “place in the sun“ it is important to make two wills. One in the country where you own the property or land, with a local lawyer, who will be able to fully advise you on the secession laws and inheritance Tax implications of your assets in that country and a second Will under English law covering all your remaining assets. It is essential that the two Wills do not accidently revoke (cancel) the other. By taking the appropriate action now you can
avoid some potential pitfalls which would affect your family and loved ones should anything happen to you.

Your Finances
By Paul Ross, Landmark IPA LTD
Fewer than half of people in the UK are saving enough for retirement Fewer than half (45%) of those who could and should be preparing financially for their old age are currently saving enough, according to the ninth annual Scottish Widows Pensions Report. One in five Britons (20%) are saving nothing at all for their retirement and over a third are 'under-saving' either somewhat or severely, the study of 5,200 UK adults found. UNREALISTIC AND UNDERPREPARED Despite UK pension provision falling to a lower level now than at the height of the recession (adequate provision stood at 54% in 2009) the nation’s aspirations for their retirement income have actually increased by £700 per annum from 2012 to 2013. The findings show that the average level of annual income people would feel comfortable living on at 70 years-old is now £25,200 (from £24,500 in 2012). Based on this year’s average savings levels, an average person retiring at 65 could receive under half the amount that they want. The total pot for an average saver could be around £122,000 in today’s terms, which might provide an annual pension of just £3,860. With the addition of the state pension, this would generate a yearly income of approximately £11,400, falling drastically short of the £25,200 annual income people are looking for and equating to a total pension fund shortfall of about £430,000.
INDEBTEDNESS IN OLD AGE This year’s research found that we are entering retirement with an increasing number of credit commitments, including loans, mortgages and

credit card debt. Almost 5.3 million (24%) Britons aged over 50 have a mortgage, over one in four (25%) have credit card debt and one in 10 (8%) have an unsecured loan. Out of those who are already retired, a third (32%) are still paying off debts and excluding mortgage debt, the average amount owed is £5,682. Retirement planning is vital and an issue many people put off until a later date. If you wish to discuss any of the above or your existing pension plans, please feel free to contact me on 01778 440555 and I’ll be more than happy to chat to you about your own individual circumstances.
Colour lessons that changed the way I decorate (Part 1)
I had such fun painting and wallpapering my first home but I couldn’t understand why the bathroom felt so cold and I really hated the drab living room. Identifying what is wrong is easier than finding the remedy because how you decorate with colour will undoubtedly have an effect on people. Now I have learned the tricks of the trade so let’s delve a bit deeper into this fascinating subject. Here we look at red, blue, green and brown and next month we explore orange, mauve, turquoise and grey. (If you cannot wait till then pop over to my website: www.yasminchopin.com).
RED

Rich and full of vitality it is all about strength, warmth and desire. Red is always considered a good colour for a dining room as it has associations with food and appetite. It has also been proven to raise blood pressure, respiration and heart rate physically creating warmth so if you have a cold north facing room this might be a good choice.
BLUE
Blue sharpens the mind; children apparently perform higher in IQ tests in a blue room as it’s considered more relaxing to the nervous system. Blue is a popular choice for kitchens. However it can make you feel cold so choose the shade carefully. Pastel blues are calming and consequently a good choice for bedrooms.

Security Top Tip
As the dark nights are approaching look at your home through a burglar’s eyes – check for inadequate locks and doors and windows in poor condition. It is also highly advisable to never leave spare keys in easily accessible places – burglars always know where to look. • C&J Supplies are the leaders in locking solutions. Pet’s Corner
Firework advice for pet owners
It’s the time of year where many of us look forward to Bonfire Night and the accompanying firework displays but sadly many pets become stressed and fearful in the run up to and during fireworks night. Approximately 80% of pets are frightened of fireworks so you’re not on your own with trying to find what works to keep them calm and stress-free so here are some Do’s and Don’ts you can try before and during the swooshes and the bangs!
Do
In the run up to Bonfire Night…
1. Walk your dogs when it is still light outside, if you can’t manage this then ask your local dog walker to do this for you. This reduces the possibility of fireworks being set off and your dog becoming worried. 2. Download Firework noises from You Tube or buy loud noise music and play it for short bursts daily, gradually increasing the volume associating it with rewards and positive experiences helps teach dogs that loud noises need not be scary at all. On the night… 3. Provide a bed in a place where your pet can feel safe and train your dog to associate this area with positive experiences e.g. treats and toys. 4. Increase your pet’s feeling of calm by dabbing their paws with a couple of drops of lavender oil and feeding them chamomile treats (made from soaking their treats in chamomile tea). 5. Help them to feel secure by plugging in pheromone diffusers (available from your local vets) as close to their bed as possible, start using the diffuser at least a few days before fireworks are expected.
40
6. Make sure all windows, doors and cat flaps are securely closed during fireworks night. This will reduce the chances of your pets escaping. 7. Provide extra litter trays for cats in case they are not used to being confined to the house. 8. Provide distractions such as new toys or chews. Draw curtains and switch on the TV to mask the noise from the fireworks. 9. Invite a neighbour’s dog over that’s not frightened, it will have a positive effect on your scared dog. If you think none of the above will please seek advice from your vets
Do Not
• Don’t leave your pets home alone while fireworks are going off, pets will be more relaxed when they have a familiar person with them during this time. • Don’t make a fuss of them if they are showing signs of fear, panting, pacing quivering etc, leave them alone and ignore their behavior. • DO NOT punish your pet! This will only make your pet more distressed.
Most of all enjoy your evening and try and make it as stress free as possible for your pooch!

News from the Bourne Business Chamber The Bourne Business Chamber has had two meetings this month and a variety of topics have been discussed. Members talked about the possibility of The Burghley Arms being taken over by Weatherspoons, the new Screw Fix store that has opened in Cherry Hold Road and the changes to be made to deliveries in Bourne by the Royal Mail. Chairman Paul Ross updated members with news from South Kesteven District Council, with their initiatives to help local businesses grow their business to the next level through their Business Support Programme. Nick Boles MP will be speaking at a future meeting and has invited members to attend a tour of the House of Commons. Paul gave a run-through of local Bourne news including the new Texaco petrol station which has just opened, McDonald’s have applied for planning permission on the same site as the Texaco and Police are stamping down on anti-social behaviour. He also passed on a warning of fake £20 notes in circulation in Bourne. Guest speakers at the last meeting were Jackie Markley of Cherry Holt Garden Centre who talked about her business and future expansion plans and Philip Hakim, Osteopath who gave a very interesting talk focusing on acute musculoskeletal pain. For further information about the Bourne Business Chamber visit the website www.bournebusiness.co.uk
Birthstone of the month
Opal is unlike any other gemstone. It is made up of tiny silica spheres and held together by silica jelly into regular 3D structures. This gives the play of colour, generally the brighter and more varied the colour the more valuable the Opal is. Myth suggests that Opal confers good fortune to the wearer and aids memory when touched to the forehead. • Crown Jewellers, 15C North St, Bourne PE10 9AE 01778 393994. www.crown-jewellers.co.uk

shop?
Volunteers are urgently needed to help run the British Red Cross shop in North Street. Manager Amanda Stoneman is appealing to the public to work in the shop for just one day a week on a voluntary basis, helping to raise money for a very good cause. She said: “We are a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. “We enable vulnerable people at home and overseas to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help people recover and move on with their lives. “We are a very small but happy band of volunteers who work tirelessly and I am sure you would enjoy yourself!” Also the shop is always grateful to receive good quality donations. If you can help, Amanda Stoneman would love to hear from you. Please pop into the shop to speak with her or alternatively call 01778 426452.

...Bourne Hospital
T
by Rex Needle
he loss of Bourne Hospital fifteen years ago is widely regarded as one of the great social injustices in the history of the town when it became the victim of spending cuts by the National Health Service and left the community without its own front line service for medical care. The hospital had been built in 1915 by Bourne Rural District Council at a cost of £5,000 [£435,000 at today’s values] as an isolation unit for patients with infectious diseases, hence its location in South Road, a mile outside town. There were male and female wards with beds for children and the surrounding gardens were landscaped with grass, flowers, trees and shrubs. It was intended for cases of scarlet fever, diphtheria and typhoid and a separate tuberculosis pavilion was added in 1925, then regarded as one of the finest of its kind in England but was later adapted for the treatment of chest conditions. Smallpox cases were excluded and in November 1930 an arrangement was made with the Peterborough Corporation to send such patients to their isolation hospital at Fengate. It was through this early co-operation that the present system of health administration for Bourne sprang and although geographically in Lincolnshire, the hospital was taken over in 1949 by the Peterborough Area Health Authority
44
which also controlled the Stamford and Rutland Hospital. While the Bourne Hospital was open, this system operated to the disadvantage of local residents who were often sent for advanced treatment to Peterborough while patients from Peterborough were sent to Bourne. By 1965, the hospital had become a medical and surgical unit with a matron, 53 beds, consultants, day and night nursing staff, kitchen workers and a porter. There was also a chest X-ray unit and a nursing service with two midwifery sisters, ante and post natal clinics, a health visitor and a medical officer attending around 60 cases a year and making 200 home visits each month. There were also clinics specialising in the eyes, orthopaedics, remedial and relaxation therapy and child welfare. The decision to close the hospital sparked a vigorous protest campaign in the town and an 8,000-name petition to keep it open but the battle was eventually lost in September 1998. The premises stood empty until 2003 when the fouracre site was sold to developers and the entire complex was demolished within a few weeks to make way for new houses which have since been built on the land.
