elcome to our amazing November issue, which I and the team are very proud to announce, is our biggest and best yet! And this reflects the way our town is changing and growing. There’s no doubt Bourne is a great place to live as it has attracted country-wide companies such as Sainsbury’s, Boots, Tesco, Specsavers and Costa. But it’s the smaller independent businesses that are opening; older businesses that are thriving, and businesses that are expanding that prove how much the community supports this town. Read all about some of these businesses including Magpie’s Nest – a new craft and collectable centre which has opened its doors this month, and Sophie Allport - a new homeware shop which has opened a showroom in King Street, Langtoft. On the subject of business, I attended a meeting of the Bourne Business Chamber this month and listened to an interesting talk by the leader of Lincolnshire County Council, Martin Hill. Read my report in the supplement in our middle pages. Lincolnshire police has reported a recent increase in doorstep sellers who target areas offering small household products for sale. Please warn your neighbours, particularly elderly or vulnerable neighbours, not to open the door to strangers or buy or sell on the doorstep.

How they work

The sellers will be carrying holdalls containing linen and cleaning products. They may say that they are on a “rehabilitation course” arranged by probation services or other organisations trying to find people work. This is not the case and often they are known criminals. Probation services do not run such schemes. They may show a card which claims to be a pedlars licence or work permit. The example shown here is one that has been frequently seized by the police. This is not valid and they are breaking the law if they are using anything like this. They may also hand over a card saying they are deaf or dumb. They will knock on a door, offering items which they know are cheap and of very poor quality; the householder also knows they are rubbish, but that is part of the scam. Many people will purchase items and pay them something, just to get rid of them. There have been cases of elderly residents handing over large sums as these people can be very persistent and confrontational. The addresses of elderly / vulnerable / gullible people are often noted and sold on in prisons and pubs. Police advise that almost every one of these people have criminal records.

Sainsbury’s Superstore in Bourne will be holding a stall at the Christmas Lights event on November 30th to raise money for their charity partner Dementia Support South Lincs.

There will be tickets to a Grand Draw and the stall will have lots of small fun games including one where you pay 50p for a key and if it opens a cupboard with a glass front you get to win what’s inside the cabinet! Dementia Support South Lincs was chosen by staff and customers at Sainsbury’s. The charity covers the Bourne, Deeping and Stamford area of Lincolnshire and aims to support and improve the quality of life of people living with dementia and their carers. Money raised will help the charity towards its ultimate goals which are; to reduce social isolation which can occur when living with dementia, offer access to information on a wide range of topics and to provide a better understanding of the diagnosis. Store Manager Nicki Richardson said: “We like supporting our local community and our local charities. This charity was chosen by the customers and we are looking forward to doing more with them over the next few months. “After this some of our staff members will be taking part in the Santa Fun Run at Burghley House in Stamford on December 15th.” The store is also encouraging children to have a go at making a Christmas bauble to go on a tree at the Christmas Tree Festival in the Methodist Church. Cardboard templates of baubles will be available from the Coffee Shop and Customer Service desk. Children can take the templates home and decorate their bauble. They then need to bring it back in and it will be displayed on a tree at the Christmas Tree Festival which is being held on the same weekend as the switching-on of the Christmas lights After the Festival the tree will be moved into the store.

New Sophie Allport showroom

ophie Allport is a family business based in The Barn, King Street Industrial Estate near Langtoft. The business was set up in 2007 by Lincolnshire designer Sophie and her brother Jem. Sophie designs wonderful fabric, oilcloth, stationery and fine bone china collections while her accountancytrained brother runs the business side of things. Her best-selling Chicken, Busy Bee, Rose and Labrador collections are an example of how the countryside and nature inspires her designs. hat a beautiful September we have enjoyed, the weather has been perfect. This is a favourite time of the year for me when the fields are being harvested. Our garden has produced an abundance of fruit this year so the house smells of wonderful homemade chutney, jams and jellies. We just needed a couple more weeks of warmth for all of our bunches of grapes to be fully ripe - the saying “much wants more” springs to mind. Again we have met some very special people and been invited to lovely events. We were happy to attend the Gala organised by Friends of Butterfield to raise money for the centre, many community groups joined in so there were a wide variety of stalls and refreshments. We also visited Worth Court for their Summer Fête; again a lovely event and an opportunity for us to visit this wonderful facility and meet some of the staff and residents. It was heartening to hear from one lady who had only been a resident of Worth Court for a couple of weeks but said she wished she had moved before because she felt so at home there, after living for over 50 years in the same house in Bourne before she moved. The Big Coffee Morning organised by Jane

Mulhern raised an incredible £830 for the Marie Curie nurses and it was a very hectic morning with a queue sometimes forming as so many wanted to support such a good cause; the

Allotments have again become very popular all over the country and Bourne is no exception to this trend and it was my privilege to present the Mayor’s prize to Angie Free, other prizes were presented to Malcolm Sleight, Alan Parish, and David Jackson. Well done to them and all the allotment owners. We also support Mayors in other towns and enjoyed a Last Night of Proms concert given by the Stamford Brass Band in the Theatre at Stamford, and a concert given by The Coldstream Guards in Lincoln Cathedral in aid of ABF The Soldiers Charity. We also went to the Service and the laying of wreaths for the Commemoration and Thanksgiving for victory in the Battle of Britain which was held in Stamford.

That brings me to a very important event in the Bourne calendar namely the Remembrance Day Parade and service held in the Memorial Gardens at 11.45am on Sunday November 10th. A service follows in our beautiful Abbey Church to which all are welcome. This is a way we can support our troops and their families past and present and remember those who sacriﬁced everything to give us the freedom we enjoy. The Memorial Garden in front of the Derby and Joan Club will be opened on the 2nd November at 2pm and you are invited to place a cross in remembrance after this time.

nheriting a house full of collectables from her uncle encouraged owner Rose Saunders to fulfil a life-long ambition and open her own Craft and Collectable Centre. A former care worker, Rose has been brought up loving crafts, and after finding herself needing to dispose of tonnes of collections she decided it was just the push she needed to to start her own shop. Ms Saunders’ friend Gaynor Leigh is working alongside her in the five-roomed building, formerly the children’s nursery in Burghley Street. The centre has attracted interest from local artists and woodworkers and many of its spaces to rent have already been taken up. Collectables, shabby chic furniture, wirework jewellery and patchwork are just a few of the things on sale. Ms Saunders said: “We have a very good artist who sells greetings cards from her paintings, we have a beadworker, two very good woodworkers – one who makes tables and stools, and one who makes beautiful rocking horses and a grandfather clock.

m or rf pe ns io ot om Pr ge ed H g in tt Cu at Wild Heart Music Shop & Cafe On Wednesday 9th October 'Wild Heart Music Shop & Cafe' opened its doors for an unusual event of live music provided by Cutting Hedge Promotions. CHP is a non-profit making local music promotion company ran by students and teachers from Bourne Academy who provide the musicians and technicians with the equipment and a platform in which to put on these growing nights of alternative and original music for the public's viewing pleasure. For this particular evening there was the added luxury of a warm welcome and delicious home-cooked lasagne or quiche with a side dressing of salad and garlic bread. The entry fee was of course free and the food a bargain at £5.95 for an adult portion. By 7pm the doors were well and truly wide open and the cafe side of the venue atmospheric with many well behaved young students also happy to stand and appreciate the music on offer. First up was Alex Bullivant, the first time that he has publicly performed his solo material since having to take a short 'time-out' period from his regular position as frontman for 'Half Time Radio', due to one of the members being university bound this year. His confidence and stage presence was a pleasure to behold and his experience ensured that the night got off to a great start. Leona Bilby (a Year 11 student from Bourne Academy) was next up and although apparently nervous to be performing in public for just the third time, Leona was enigmatic and cool and let her beautiful melodic tunes do the talking - simply stunning stuff! Emily Morgan played next and thrashed out a fantastic twenty minute set of her best works played in her very unique way, at times exploring the semi-acoustic for its percussive qualities to support her rhythmically driven material and haunting vocals. By 8.30pm we were ready for our headline act of the night as Harry Preen and Sam Harding (both from Bourne Academy) took to the small

stage situated in front of the shop window against an atmospheric backdrop of colour-changing lighting and traditional white t-cups lit up by the moving illuminations. 'Two Fifths of Albion' as they were to be known for the rest of the night, didn't seem like less than half a band at all, their preparation was somewhat thorough and their appearance and persona highly professional. They looked the part and sounded even more so, the hits sounded fantastic with an low-key acoustic approach and the musicians pot (a contributory fee towards the musicians and their efforts) began to fill with generous offerings. The whole night itself was a rare treat. Great music, great food, great atmosphere and youthful enthusiasm with a sprinkling of impeccable manners for good measure. Come and join our Community Brass Band

Are you a brass player, and would like to take this up again, or join with other likeminded musicians? The Salvation Army Bourne have in the last couple of years helped develop a Community brass band with some folks joining who have not played for over 30 years. The growing group of musicians have been playing at the Army in a monthly Songs of Praise meeting but are also to be involved this year in the switching on of the lights in Bourne, and at the Army's community carol service at the Corn Exchange on Sunday 22nd December. Band member Jo Sunner (well known as the osteopath) is keen to see this develop into a Bourne brass band, and Major Richard Durrant of Salvation Army (currently acting as bandmaster) can see there is real potential for this to happen. He said: “It has been exciting to see this group naturally develop, and even though we are a mixed group consisting of those who are blowing out the cobwebs after not playing for years, and semi-professional musicians, it is great to come and work together as we share our love of brass band music”. He adds: “For me it has been an added bonus to do so in the context of praising God who gave us music”, but I can see the potential for this to develop into a new and valuable asset to our local community. Jo Sunner adds: “I am delighted to be working to develop a brass band for Bourne. We are 28

anxious to hear from anyone, at whatever level of competence to get in touch. I believe there are quite a number of bandsmen sitting at home looking to play in a local brass band for fun and enjoyment. The Salvation Army is steeped in brass bands and I'm so pleased that Major Durrant & the Bourne Corps are helping bring this about.”

Members of the Bourne Business Chamber enjoyed an interesting and informative talk by Martin Hill OBE, leader of Lincolnshire County Council, at their monthly meeting. Mr Hill told members about financial cuts the Council has had to make and how they went about it. He also talked about the new and positive things happening in the county – radical changes to the youth service and how some libraries will be able to stay open if manned by volunteers. One and half million pounds has been spent on PCSOs and ten million pounds has been spent bringing broadband to the rural areas. Other developments include a major incinerator which has been built outside Lincoln to take a lot of waste, plus extra investment in highways. Mr Hill also said the new car parking enforcement initiative is going well. Also speaking at the meeting was IT specialist Taff Lovesey, who surprised members with some little-known facts about internet security, including subjects such as Malware, hacking, telephone scams and passwords. Training Consultant Jane Whitehead told members about her experience as a ‘dragon’ to Bourne Grammar School Yr 11 Business students and how impressed she was with the students and the products. Browser problems - Reset

The most common issue I see in the field these days is corruption and/or hijacking of a user’s internet browser. I probably handle two or three queries a week via telephone for this issue. Thankfully, in most cases, the fix for this is pretty easy and involves re-setting the browser to the default settings, removing any add-ons that have ‘crow-barred’ their way onto the system. Unfortunately the process to do this varies for each browser. The following processes explain how to reset two of the most common browsers in use today; Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

RESET INTERNET EXPLORER

1. Click on the settings icon (note that this icon varies by Internet Explorer version) 2. Click on Internet Options 3. Click on the Advanced tab 4. Click on Reset (at the bottom) You will now be prompted to carry out the reset. Optionally you can choose to delete all personal settings. In most cases I would advise that you DO CHOOSE to delete these, so 5. tick the box 6. Click Reset Internet explorer will commence the process Once all of the lines show green it is done You will be prompted to close the browser and to restart your system.

RESET GOOGLE CHROME

1. Open Chrome 2. Click on the Options icon at the top right 3. Click Settings 4. Click on Show Advanced Settings (at bottom of the window) 5. Click on Reset Browser 6. Close the Chrome browser and then re-open it.

WHERE’S MY HOME PAGE GONE?

Although this process does a good job of removing problems caused by add-ons, the negative side is that it changes the home page (the page that opens when you start to browse) back to the default Google Chrome page or MSN. In both cases you will need to put the home page back to the one you want to use

and use the FULL web address (url) when adding it (e.g; http://www.bbc.co.uk, http://www.google.co.uk etc;)

To reset the home page in Internet Explorer: 1. Click on the settings icon and open Internet Options (as above) 2. On the General tab you can enter the url of the web site that you want to open when you start Internet Explorer. 3. Enter the full website url and click OK

To reset the home page in Google Chrome:

There has been a case in the press recently about a divorce financial settlement overturned by the High Court after the wife discovered the husband had failed to disclose substantial parts of his assets, including shares worth ¾ million pounds in a company with a 50 million pound turnover. The wife had accepted £1.8 million as her full and final settlement but without seeking legal advice along the way. The couple both wanted a speedy end to the marriage.

dmittedly the figures we are dealing with here are not typical of the average divorcing couple. But what is becoming increasingly the norm, is at least one of the spouses electing not to instruct a solicitor in order to save legal costs and also not bothering with full financial disclosure before agreeing the terms of a consent order in divorce. This is all fine and dandy when the assets are modest and also when you trust your other half to behave decently and you think you know pretty much everything about their financial situation anyway. But take heed of the High Court Judge, Sir Paul Coleridge, who said in the case mentioned: “With the availability of legal advice becoming scarcer and parties often having to litigate without proper legal advice, it is more than ever important that financial details are presented to the other side and the Court in a simple, clear,

concise and above all, accurate way”. This tale has a moral for both sides. For the spouse who thinks they can get away with not disclosing the full extent of their assets, obtaining a final order is not the last word because the Courts will overturn such orders where they have been made on a false basis. For the spouse who is expecting a payout in a divorce settlement, in order to ensure that the sum on the table is fair, detailed knowledge of the payer’s finances may be necessary before you accept it. The best way to ensure that you do have the full picture and that the court order you obtain at the end of the day is properly binding, you should seek expert legal advice from a family law specialist. It may seem an unwelcome expense at the time but it will be worth it in the long run.

Happy 100th Birthday to Mary! Huge congratulations to our oldest reader Mary Porter who has celebrated her 100th birthday this year. Mary has two children, four grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Mary worked in service for the Mays family at Eastgate House during WW2 and witnessed the German bomber crash in Eastgate. After the war she continued to work for Raymond Mays, helping out with parties at Eastgate House where she met many famous racing drivers including Fangio, Sterling Moss, Graham Hill (also Damon as a child) and Jackie Stewart. Mary met her husband Richard Porter from Liverpool, who was stationed in Bourne with the army during the war. Richard became well known in Bourne when during the Korean War he was reported missing presumed killed, only later to be found in a prisoner of war camp, having suffered a serious head injury. Mary drew widowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pension for 9 months before finding out he was still alive. Richard was one of a small group to be first released from prison and his return was covered by the national media and welcoming banners in the streets of Bourne. Mary was born in Morton and Christened and married in Morton Church before living at several addresses in Bourne. She was widowed in 1989 and lived at Meadow Close until last year. She now lives with her eldest daughter Ann in Leicestershire but makes frequent visits back to the town.

What Causes Stiff Calves Stiff calves tend to be a consequence of either remaining in one position for too long or of overstressing the tissues through exercise. Felt as stiffness, soreness, or tenderness in and around the muscles of the calves on the back of the lower leg as well as in the heel, this condition stems from too little or too much movement in the area. Though stiff calves are a normal consequence of activity and often a sign that the muscles located here have had plenty of exercise, they can cause discomfort. I recommend stretching, massage, and the application of heat or a topical heat rub. The major calf muscles point the foot downward at the ankle and therefore are highly active during movements like walking, running, climbing, and jumping. They also help to reinforce upright posture by preventing the body from falling forward when standing. As they connect the back of the leg to the heel bone in the foot via a single large tendon on the back of the ankle called the Achilles tendon, the calf muscles do all these things by contracting, which causes the muscle to shorten and pull upward on the heel, hinging the foot downwards to move properly! Stiff calves are extremely common in recreational exercisers and athletes alike, since so many activities require the use of the calf muscles. Runners, basketball players, boxers, dancers, and anyone else who spends a great deal of time on their toes may be chronically afflicted by stiff calves. Similarly, individuals who do not walk enough are likely to experience soreness or tightness in this area! When they finally do walk a distance!

Stiff calves may also be an effect of remaining in one position for too long a period, particularly if the muscles have been recently exercised. An example is sleeping on oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stomach: when lying face-down, the foot is placed in a plantarflexed or pointed position, which shortens the calf muscles. When attempting to stand up first thing in the morning, which elongates the calves, stiffness and tightness may be experienced in the muscles or near the Achilles tendon, making taking those first few steps somewhat difficult. Calf cramps in the night may also be experienced in this sleeping position, leading to calf stiffness upon waking. A similar cause of stiff calves is wearing highheeled shoes. This places the muscles in a constantly shortened position and therefore can cause tightness felt upon removing the shoes and stretching the muscles. The most recommended treatment for these causes of calf stiffness, aside from behavioral change, is massage and stretching, which sends blood flow and oxygen to the tissues and returns the muscles to their resting length. Generally, Calves may be treated with stretching, massage, or soaking in hot water. Anything that encourages blood flow to the muscles may be helpful.

The true cost of buying a house Buying a house is one of the biggest ďŹ nancial decisions that you will make in your life.

t can be a lengthy and complicated business, which while exciting can sometimes be frightening and even cause stress and worry. But it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be like that. Remember that on top of the cost of the house itself, there are many other, one-off expenses involved in buying a home and moving which can soon add up, for example Mortgage application fees, Survey fees, Stamp Duty, Search Fees, Land registry fees, legal costs, removal costs and if you are selling as well as buying, estate agents fees. If you are buying your property with the help of a mortgage it is a good idea to get a written agreement in principle from the mortgage lender to show to the seller. This demonstrates that you are serious about buying and any offer you make may be taken a little more seriously. If you are having a mortgage your lender will carry out a basic valuation, but this will only ensure that the amount they are lending you is protected. It is strongly advised that you also have an independent, more detailed survey carried out. The level of survey you need depends a lot on the individual property you are buying. Searches will need to be carried out. Searches are enquiries submitted to various authorities which provide you with more information about the property you plan to purchase. Searches

provide important information about the property, for example whether the roads serving the property are adopted highways, whether there are any mineshafts in the vicinity or whether the property is subject to any planning enforcement notices. The process from having your offer accepted to completion usually takes about 12 weeks. However this does depend on the chain. If the property you are purchasing is in a chain your own purchase will be affected if someone a few links down the chain has problems with their mortgage company, their searches reveal matters that require further investigation or they lose their buyer.

Bourne Deeping Hockey Club

ourne Deeping Hockey Club is the product of a merger between two local hockey clubs; Market Deeping HC and Bourne HC, officially formed on 10 May 2011. Originally formed in the 1920’s and 70’s respectively, both Bourne and Market Deeping Hockey Clubs have a great deal of history as individual clubs in their own rights. Both clubs have produced an abundance of local talent who have gone on to play at National League level and together as Bourne Deeping we hope to see more and more players come through the ranks to play at a higher level. We have forged good links not only with the local community, businesses and enterprise but also with local primary and secondary schools. The club has established a Junior Academy which we are extremely proud of and has been nationally recognised by England Hockey. We currently run two coaching sessions a week with 40 – 60 children attending, from 6 – 16 years of age. The Club has been awarded a Club First accreditation, which recognises that the club is run in a professional manner and adheres to governmental policy, such as CRB checks and qualified coaching personnel. With currently 120 members, five Men’s teams and three Ladies teams plus the junior academy the future looks

very bright for the club and local hockey. The club is always on the look out for new players of all ages and abilities so please get in touch or turn up to a Thursday evening men’s training session at Arthur Mellows Village College Astro, 18:45 - 20:30.

Pushing and pulling your putts

We all have tendencies that we instinctively rely on under pressure, and no more so than on the greens. If you miss putts to the right (a push for right handers) a good drill to practice (and use on the course as a practice swing) is to just use or hold the putter with your right hand and hole putts just with this hand holding the putter. If you miss the putts left (a pull for right handers) then when practicing, place a coin behind the ball. Then when you make your stroke keep focusing on the coin well after impact, or until you hear the ball drop into the hole.

Are you worried that your dog is showing signs of being overweight? Unfortunately, this is one of the fastest growing problems with our pets today. Dogs become overweight for many reasons, diet, exercise or breeding, as some are more prone to obesity than others, such as English Bulldogs, Beagles, miniature schnauzers, Dachshunds, Pugs, Dalmatians and Spaniels. Canine obesity if not treated can cause illnesses such as Arthritis, breathing difficulties, heart problems and diabetes. Unfortunately once a pet is overweight; their physical activity drops making it harder to lose weight. This was seen in a recent rescue case where Poppy the Bullmastiff ** was over double her optimum weight at 76kgs when her owner gave her up for re-homing. It can sneak up on you so ask friends or family what they think, as they will often notice any changes before you do and you can assess their weight with these guidelines:

Ideal: Ribs are easily felt and have a thin layer of fat. Waist and tuck-up are obvious but not exaggerated.

Overweight: Ribs have noticeable fat; waist and tuck-up are visible but not prominent.

Heavy: Ribs are covered with a heavy layer

of fat and noticeable fat deposits appear on the spine and at the base of the tail. Waist is absent or barely discernible.

Obese: A heavy fat layer completely obscures ribs and heavy fat deposits appear over the spine and around the tail base. Waist and tuckup disappear.

area, along the spine, and around the tail base. No waist or tuck-up. Abdomen protrudes, and fat deposits are on legs and neck.

If you think you dog is overweight here are some easy steps you can take: 1. Increase the frequency and difficulty of exercise. Older dogs will benefit from several short walks a day rather than one or two long ones. 2. Establish two or three set mealtimes per day, no free-feeding and use a measured scoop to give only the recommended amount of food. 3. Watch the fat content in the food you buy. Fats are energy sources; if the energy isn't used up, fats merely add unneeded calories. 4. Feed appropriate snacks. Shop for treats that are low in calorie or give small pieces of carrots and apples as treats 5. Don't leave your dog alone with the kids at snack time; they will feast on anything left for a second! 6. Keep the bin out of the dog's reach, and if your dog is a food thief, keep food off the counters as well. *Obesity can also be caused by some medical reasons you may want to rule out so seek advice from your vets before tackling any obesity. **See Poppy’s full story on the Facebook page ‘Hope for Poppy’. ...the War Memorial

emembrance Sunday is observed every year to remind us of the horrors of war and those who lost their lives in conflict, a tradition that began after the Armistice signalling the end of the Great War of 1914-18 when war memorials began to spring up in towns and villages across the land. The first war memorial in Bourne was an extension to the old Butterfield Hospital in North Road which opened in 1921 and a roll of honour was installed in the Abbey Church containing the names of 91 men who gave their lives. Remembrance or Poppy Day on November 11th was then observed by a lone bugler, war veteran Robert Pattison (1879-1959), tailor and bandmaster of Bourne Town Band, who sounded the last post from the market place until failing eyesight forced him to abandon the tradition. By this time there was a movement throughout the town for a more tangible monument as the centrepiece for the annual memorial service and the opportunity came when Bourne United Charities purchased land in South Street from the Marquess of Exeter to be preserved as a permanent open space for the town and now known as the Wellhead Gardens with part being used to remember those who had fallen in the two recent world wars, now the War Memorial Gardens.

The stone monument, funded through money left to the town and by public subscription, was unveiled and dedicated on Sunday 16th September 1956, the design based on the cenotaph in Whitehall, London, and the work of the architects W E Norman Webster and Son. It is not recorded how many men left Bourne to join the armed forces during the Great War but it is known that 97 lost their lives and their names are inscribed there although it is likely that the figure is nearer 140 and 40 names may therefore be missing. The memorial also includes the names of 32 men who did not return from the conflict of 1939-45 and a further three who died on active service before the century ended. It is here that Remembrance Sunday is now observed on the second Sunday in November, attended by civic leaders and followed by a service at the Abbey Church in accordance with the words of the poet Laurence Binyon:
