elcome to our December issue of Discovering Bourne which should be coming through your door just before our traditional Christmas Shopping Event in the town centre this weekend (November 30th). Please go along and support our local shops and businesses and enjoy the variety of stalls and family rides on offer. The Christmas Tree Festival at the Methodist Church promises to be a lovely event featuring around 40 trees from schools, organisations and businesses – all very different. Some traditional, some amusing, and others depicting their businesses. Entry is free but all donations will go to Dementia Care South Lincs. New this month, and a great addition to our publication, is our wine column written by Leigh Johnson. We have a new Facebook page – Discovering Bourne Magazine. Please like us and feel free to post any news, events or comments on there. Don’t confuse it with our old ‘Discovering Bourne’ one, which is defunct – we had to start a new one as there were administration problems with it! Have a look at our feature on Bourne’s lovely new bridal shop Blush Bridal Co. which everyone will have noticed on North Street. Also, local businesses may not be aware of the service PMK recycling offers – read about them on pages 48 and 49. All that is left is to wish all our readers and advertisers a great Christmas and New Year and we hope you get everything you wish for .

A boutique for Bourne’s
blushing brides!
Now Open
Planning your wedding is a very personal thing – and that is why Bourne’s beautiful new wedding shop Blush Bridal Co. offers a private, luxury one-to-one experience, as well as selling a gorgeous range of designer wedding dresses.
B
ourne’s newest wedding boutique, on North Street, opens its doors this weekend, and from the moment you step through the door you will see it is no ordinary wedding dress shop. Blush Bridal Co. is the brainchild of owners Suzy Simmons and Simone Herrick who have brought their joint experience in marketing, retail and customer service to open their dream shop. Both of them are local and have always wanted to open a shop in Bourne. Simone said: “Our main aim is to give the ladies that come in the experience you dream of having when you come in and look for your gown. We want them to feel like a princess and open the bubbly and have a real celebration when they find that dream dress.” The shop’s two fitting rooms are actual rooms and have sofas in for family and friends as well as tables with accessories on. Brides can book an appointment and have a truly luxurious experience in total comfort and privacy. Brides-to-be and their family and friends are also welcome to browse at any time during the shop’s opening hours. The store’s dresses have been carefully chosen for their unique and individual styles and exceptional quality. The new boutique will have samples of over 50 gowns in stock from designers such as Sottero & Midgley, Mark
Lesley, Phil Collins, Sweetheart, Sincerity, Tia by Benjamin Roberts and Tabitha, ranging in price from £599 - £1999. The shop also sells bridesmaid’s dresses by The Dessy Group and Linzi Jay and will have about 40 styles in stock in different colours. A range of gorgeous accessories are available including bags, shoes, jewellery, veils, underskirts, hair combs, broaches and tiaras. Simone and Suzy want to thank their husbands Sam and Craig respectively for their support. They both have young daughters too. Suzy said: “Our families obviously mean the world to us and play a big part in us taking on this new venture. We are local people and feel very lucky to have such a fabulous shop in our home town of Bourne.”
The boutique will open on Saturday for the Christmas Shopping Event with an official launch party in the evening from 7pm which is open to everyone. Guests can enjoy a glass of bubbly and nibbles. 6

NITRO SPORTUK
races into UK Bourne
NITROSPORT A company who has as its owner someone who is knowledgeable and enthusiastic is indeed being driven for success. Such is the case for Nitro Sport UK which is owned by Dan Richardson who has a real passion for electronic, radio controlled cars, buggies and boats.. Over the years he has enjoyed racing these models and learnt how to engineer them to get the very best from them. They are impressive to look at as well as they are mostly scaled down models and have working, fuel powered engines which are capable of tuning – with help from Dan if necessary! There is of course, a full repair and servicing after sales as well as being able to obtain all the necessary spare parts. And of course Dan is on hand to give plenty of advice, from racing to running and to share the pleasure he has had from this sport. Previously the only option to buy was on line but now in Bourne, these models can be seen, evaluated and the right one chosen for your situation. With Christmas
8
just weeks away, this is a great present for older children and adults alike which will give joy all year round. As with online, all well known and proven brands are available – HPI, Tamiya, Kyosho, Losi, Traxxas and Ansman to name a few. But there is even more exciting news for the future where Cherryholt Road site may become a race track for these models allowing those with a taste for speed and scaled down models to exercise their skill and precision. It's a great and engrossing hobby and to have it available locally puts Bourne firmly into the driving seat! No need to wait until you win the lottery to go racing, the solution is here now to have fun locally.

Consumer Advice By Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com Dear readers,
Farm Shop EVENT CATERING ~ GOURMET
Now that the busy Christmas period is fast approaching, please be aware that 2013 has seen a sharp rise in pickpocketing so don’t be a victim. Keep purses secure and carry wallets in an inside pocket. Zip up hand and shoulder bags. Carry bags in front of you with flaps against your body. Keep straps short and bags tucked under your arm. Don’t show your money - keep it safely in your pocket and when using the ATM, always ensure that your money has been secured in your purse or wallet before turning away. Here are several tactics that pickpockets use:

he Bourne corps of the Salvation Army became the first group to hire Sassi’s for a private function when they met there last Sunday for a special celebration meal. This was in connection with the corps anniversary as they celebrated 23 years in their hall in Manning Road, with special meetings let by former Commanding Officers Majors David & Diane Kinsey. They enjoyed a carvery of roast turkey, beef or chicken with fresh vegetables roast potatoes and a tempting selection of desserts. Major Richard Durrant of the Bourne Corps said “This was an ideal venue for us. It was great to have

a venue exclusively to ourselves and the food and service were excellent and all at a very fair price. I would heartily recommend Sassi’s to any other groups wanting to meet for a meal and they are able to offer much more than just Thai food.” Some 30 members and friends joined together for the meal and had a great time and all commented how good it was.

A word from
your Mayor – David Higgs
T
his month I was truly delighted to be invited by Diane Hoyles, a physics teacher at Bourne Academy, to meet and hear a presentation from Phoebe Holliday and Sam Hare. They won a trip to the Space Camp in Alabama and gave the presentation to Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems who sponsored this competition. Both Mrs Hoyles and the two pupils gained so much from this life changing trip. What an incredible opportunity. We were guests at the 38th Charter Anniversary Celebration of Bourne and District Lions Club. The Bourne Lions raise incredible amounts of money for local charities and each year we know Christmas has come as we see Santa’s sleigh visiting each road in Bourne and some of the surrounding villages. But the Lions are suffering from a lack of new members so if you would be interested in joining this incredible team of volunteers and give something back to our community please visit their web page and contact them.
We had been looking forward to our Civic Fundraising Dinner and Entertainment and thanks to so many people it lived up to our expectations. I think all those attending enjoyed a delicious meal and first class entertainment from Steve Price. A very good start was made to our fundraising for our three charities.

Family business
that cleans AND cares
Family-run business Cleancare Lincolnshire Ltd is a specialist carpet and upholstery cleaning provider covering a 25-mile radius of the Bourne area.
T
he company, which has been established for ten years offers a high level of personal service, backed up by the family ethos of ‘caring’ about what they do. Owner Paul Cunnington said: “The business is run by four family members and we take pride in doing a good job and offering people an excellent service.” Carpet cleaning services range from a spot and stain removal to a full carpet clean. The equipment used cleans the carpets at 130 degrees killing all unwanted bacteria that house themselves in everyday carpets and this service is also available to clean other items such as three piece suites and rugs. The company uses an American Pro Chem machine, which cleans carpets at around 130 degrees together with removing all unwanted mites and bacteria from your carpets. All waste water is extracted into the CleanCare van leaving no damp air or unpleasant odours circulating your home. Most carpets are dry within 2-3 hours. Carpet cleaning services start from only £50.00 and
are dependent on the area of carpet being cleaned, but the cost of carpet cleaning is minimal compared to the cost of replacing carpets. CleanCare also has a hot water portable carpet and upholstery cleaning machine which sterilizes during the cleaning process. This machine enables them to clean hard to reach properties such as flats etc . Pro Chem machinery is unsurpassed in performance, quality and reliability so customers can be reassured they use high end equipment for the job. Having your upholstery cleaned will prolong the life of your furniture considerably and regular cleaning will remove mites and allergens not visible to the naked eye. Fabric also traps odours so the cleaning process will deodorise the fabric leaving it nice and fresh. CleanCare has cleaning contracts for several business in the area and comes fully recommended. They also specialise in warehouse cleaning having successfully gained a contract with one of the leading supermarkets.

Meet the café who provides quality at an affordable price!
CCaffé Cream prizes itself on offering outstanding food from prizewinning producers in its menu. From the same owner of the the 25 year old well established Bo Jangles Hair and Beauty salon, this café offers light bites that linger in the memory. Bread is from Hambleton Bakery who may be familiar to readers as they won the new hit ITV series, ‘Britain’s Best Bakery’ as are their delicious cakes. So although the cakes are delightfully ‘naughty’ they are made from quality, local ingredients and lovingly crafted by hand! The bacon and sausages, and pies are from Grasmere Farm who are a famous family business which takes pride in its traditional quality pork and bacon products combining traditional farming methods with innovative ideas based on trusted recipes. Based in Deeping St James, they also source locally. Finally the very special ice creams are from Dennets Ice Cream where four generations have home-made them since 1926 and include over 30 mouth watering flavours. Real ice cream is also a vital ingredient in the milk shakes made at Caffé Cream. Join the Saturday breakfast club, relax with a selection of dip in books, magazines or catch up with the daily newspaper. For a small café with competitive prices, this food pulls a big punch and brings a taste of quality. Check out the changing specials

Wines for Christmas
By Leigh Johnson
Christmas really is a time to enjoy the company of family and friends and there is no better way to do this than over a few glasses of wine.
B
ourne has two major supermarkets, Tesco and Sainsbury, so I shall highlight a few wines from each because they will be easily available. However, do remember that there are a number of other supermarkets and specialist wine merchants that are equally as good for sourcing your festive drinks. Many of us start Christmas with smoked salmon. The perfect accompaniment is champagne. Sparkling wine bursts with freshness and acidity to cut through the oiliness of salmon. A Bucks Fizz works well too. Tesco are offering Lanson Rose NV at £25, which for a rose is pretty good value. They are also offering the excellent De Vallois NV Champagne at £12.99. Sainsbury have the very good Piper Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top at £12.99. If you are looking to trim costs, Sainsbury also have a wonderfully expressive Cava from Codorniu available at just £6.99 For the majority of us, Turkey with all the trimmings will be the main event for Christmas lunch. Turkey is an amazingly wine-friendly food and both red and white wine will work equally well. For white wine lovers, the most successful pairing will be Chardonnay. Look for a wine that is not overly oaked but has a roundness, a fatness with good acidity to cut through the richness of the sauces. Wither Hills Chardonnay 2010 from Sainsbury at £8.99 and Woolf Blas Yellow Label 2012 from Tesco at £6.99 would be good choices. If you can stretch to it, look out for a Meursault or Chassagne Montrachet from Burgundy, these will be pricer but exceptional.
22
For those who prefer red wines with the turkey, you really have a vast choice of matching wines. Beaujolais, Rioja, Cabernet Sauvignon are all excellent choices but two that caught my eye are the La Chasse Cote Du Rhone from both Tesco and Sainsbury at £7.99 and Sainsbury Taste The Difference Douro at £8.49. * Please note that availability and prices are always subject to change.

Harve veyy’s
Universal Fitness Centre
celebrates ten years of success Harvey’s Universal Fitness Centre is ten years old this year and the Bourne gym is celebrating its journey from small beginnings to the successful family-run business it is today.
T
he gym originally opened in Cherry Holt Road in 2003 and was described as a ‘good old fashioned gym’. In 2008 it moved to a bigger site. Owner Harvey Taylor said: “We had been open five years and couldn’t fit any more equipment in and couldn’t do classes as we didn’t have a studio. So it enabled us to put a studio in, put changing rooms in, a bigger more well-equipped gym, sauna and separate ladies only fitness suite.” From just ten fitness classes a week in 2008 the gym now proudly puts on nearly 40. There are a wide variety including spinning, boxing, belly dancing, zumba and body pump. Harvey said: “One of the keys to our success has been the classes and one of the main attractions for the new year is Disco Spinning. We will turn off the lights in the studio and the new light system will flash to the beat of the music.” The whole ethos behind the gym is the wide range of age groups within the membership. The youngest member is 13 and the oldest 87 with approximately a 26

60/40 split in favour of females. The vast majority of people fit into the fitness/weight loss/toning category not body builders. Harvey said: “People come to the gym for many different reasons – some to get sport fit, some for medical reasons, some for social reasons. New people that join like the fact that it’s not just for fitness freaks or the 18-30 age bracket. Some people are selfconscious – the gym environment can leave you feeling like that – our job is to put people at ease and usually they are put at ease straight away when they see it’s all shapes and sizes, all ages and all abilities.” Harvey is proud of his “fantastic, knowledgeable and experienced” staff. He said: “Staff are key to any business, particularly here where they are seeing the same people three or four times a week and get to know them very well. It makes a difference if people feel that their names are known and they are remembered.”

New fireplace shop opens in Deeping A new showroom selling a wide range of woodburning and multi-fuel stoves has opened in High Street, Market Deeping. DT Stoves is a small family-
run business which prides itself on offering the whole package – the building work, the hearths, the stove and the installation of liners. Both of the fitters employed by the store are HETAS registered. Owner Dave Tucker has a wealth of experience in installing stoves, helped by his building background. The company also offer; servicing, repair and maintenance for any make of stove, supply of new stoves, CCTV chimney inspection and building works including fireplace removal or replacement and chimney repairs. His partner Alison Martin said: “With the increasing number of people wanting woodburning stoves it’s nice to be able to offer the whole package. Alison said: “Customers are really pleased to find the shop here. We have been amazed at the response to the shop already and the amount of people that have come through the door. “There are so many stoves available on the internet but what the shop has over the internet is if you buy something from us then it’s our responsibility to get it changed if it’s not working,

WASTE MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR BOURNE BUSINESSES T
he business is based on Outgang Road, Baston Fen and any registered business is welcome to use the facility to dispose of their unwanted recyclables. The company also offers a roll-on, roll-off skip service where skips can be left with businesses and collected or exchanged at a later date once filled. Director Damian Pumpr said: “Our enclosed, netted skips are ideal for anyone who produces recyclable materials on a reasonable scale. Most companies out there are paying for these recyclable materials to be taken away! Our service is sometimes provided for free by us and there are times when we can even pay the customer for their waste! We also take in concrete, brick and hardcore waste, and crush it back down into a useable product. Mixed soil and stone is also taken in and screened over a vibrating plant which enables us to offer it back out as top soil for gardens and green areas. The thing that makes us unique is that nobody in the
40
area has the dry recyclable sorting and baling plant that we have here.” The company, which is run by owner Roy Pumpr, son Damian Pumpr, Meti Rushiti and Naomi Phillips, handles over five hundred tons of material every week, of which less than 6 tons is sent to landfill! Director Naomi Phillips said: “We pride ourselves on such a small amount of material that is sent to landfill. Our motto is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!” Roy Pumpr added: “we provide a facility where all of the local farmers can bring their washed out plastic drums and PP fertiliser bags amongst other recyclables”.

PMK Recycling welcomed a group of children from Baston Church of England Primary School to the premises on 18th November enabling the children to get a feel of what recycling is all about. “Alice Handley, play worker at the school said: “It was the afterschool club’s Recycling Week and the children were really excited and loved the visit.”
PMK Recycling are stockists of top soil, sands, gravels, crushed stone and granite chippings for collection or delivery and take in inert mixed soil and stone.
If any householder or business wonders what happens to their used food tins, plastic bottles, cardboard, newspapers and magazines they should take a look at the great YouTube clip of the company which appears on their website www.pmkrecyclingltd.co.uk or call 01778 561155 for further information.

By Yasmin Chopin, Local Interior Designer
How to decorate with pattern
I notice a fear of pattern! It’s a subject that regularly crops up in my consultancy visits and I’m often asked if it’s possible, or correct, to mix patterns such as flowers (a flower could be described as a motif) and stripes. Yes, not only is it possible but it can be extremely interesting and exciting. You have to be clever with the size of pattern and the colours in order to make it work. To create a look that is attractive, comes together well and is easy on the eye you could:Use one motif as this makes it easier to use pattern in a room. You can vary the size (scale) of the motif from very large to very small but limit it to three sizes in one room so the eye can take it all in. Use only one scale of pattern, small floral for instance, then you could have a lot of it and it will look super because nothing works against it. Develop a colour palette from one favourite patterned item in the room and then make sure everything matches the colour palette. This will make the pattern ‘sit’ well in the scheme. Balance the quantity of pattern and plain at roughly 50:50 so the patterns don’t overpower. Be daringly bold and mix different types of motif but keep the scales in harmony; wide stripes and tiny florals might not work whereas pinstripes and tiny florals will.
Pattern is also useful as camouflage. To hide something ugly cover it, and the surrounding area, in the same pattern and you will find it hard to see the offending item; a satisfactory way to deal with pipes, awkward features and difficult shaped rooms.
I wish you a happy festive season and if you need help introducing pattern into your home get in contact by email: ycid@yasminchopin.com or phone 07831 231 664 or via my website: www.yasminchopin.com. 42

TOP TEN SECURITY TIPS IN AND AROUND THE HOME With the dark nights now upon us, C & J Supplies bring you security tips to keep safe this winter. 1: Start by reviewing the exterior of your property to make sure there are no broken windows or access to your property through garages or conservatories. Make sure you lock away any tools and items such as ladders. 2: Opportunistic thieves can often approach houses that look like nobody is at home, so consider installing light timers around the house so it appears someone is home. 3: Sensor lighting to the front and back door of the home will deter potential thieves. 4: Alarms can be very effective but you need to change the code regularly to gain maximum benefit from them. 5: Side windows can be smashed to reach keys, so consider adding reinforced glass or maybe even block up the window all together. 6: Home safes are a great way to keep valuables and car keys in overnight.
7: It is a good idea to install top and bottom bolts on garage doors - garage doors are the most common way into any house. 8: Consider your own influence on the level of security for your home and don’t indulge in bad habits such as never leaving any lights on in the house if you go out for the evening. Simple tips like always setting your alarm, changing codes on a regular basis and locking any side or back gates can all make a big difference. 9: Statistics show that thieves are increasingly breaking into homes to steal car keys so do not make it easy for them by leaving keys in full view. 10: It is always a good idea to think when your house locks were last replaced, it is important to remember that past owners or tenants may still have a key for your house. Always change your locks as soon as you move into your new property just to put your mind at rest.

DON’T T
he festive season is well and truly underway. Christmas is usually a time to eat, drink and be merry. However Lincolnshire police just like all the other police forces around the country will be conducting road side checks to arrest and prosecute those drivers who drive whilst under the influence of drink or drugs. Last year in England and Wales almost 157,000 people were tested between December 1 and January 1 and more than 7,200 people were arrested during this Christmas crackdown on drink and drug drivers. The police are allowed to stop any vehicle at their discretion, and will often set up drink driving check points over periods such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve theses checks can be carried out any time of the day or night Even if you have had one alcoholic drink you can never be 100% sure that you are under the limit.
Got a legal question? Email

drink and drive this Christmas In the UK, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath or 107mg of alcohol in 100 ml of urine but this doesn’t mean anything to most people. The amount of alcohol that can put you over the driving limit varies from person to person. It depends on your weight, gender, metabolism, stress levels, your age and whether you’ve eaten recently. Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your ability to drive so the only safe advice is to avoid any alcohol if you are driving. Anyone caught over the legal alcohol limit when driving will be banned from driving for at least 12 months, and fined up to £5,000. You can also be sent to prison for up to six months. Imprisonment, the period of disqualification and size of fine depend on the seriousness of the offence. There are also other consequences your car insurance costs will increase, you will have a criminal record, you will lose your independence and may have to rely on others or public transport. If your job requires you to drive you could potentially be without work.

Your Health
By Mr J. Sunner. DO. BSc (ost). Registered Osteopath
What Causes Swollen Ankles? Swelling in the ankles may be a symptom of several different conditions. It is a common condition that is typically seen among older people, although anyone can have ankle swelling! Gravity causes swelling in the ankles to be more severe than in swelling higher parts of the body. Swelling in the ankles is called oedema, and oedema can be seen in any part of the body, although it is more commonly seen in the lower part of the body. A diet that is high in salt and carbohydrates may be a cause of oedema. Laxatives, diuretics, birth control pills or hormone replacement pills, and other drugs can cause oedema.
Common Causes of Swollen Ankles
The more common causes of swollen ankles include standing for extended periods of time, obesity, pregnancy, injury to the ankle or foot, and menstrual periods. In many cases, a traumatic injury is the cause of ankle swelling. This can be the result of a stress fracture or ankle sprain, for stress fractures or serious sprains, treatment may be needed. Arthritis can cause ankle swelling and is more common among those who have injured the joint previously, especially athletes, and those with rheumatoid arthritis. Gout is also another more common cause as a result of increased uric acid crystals causing inflammation and swelling in the ankle joints. Swollen ankles may be the side effect of a medication. Allergic reactions can cause swelling.
Treatment of Swollen Ankles
The treatment of swollen ankles varies depending on the cause of the condition. When
sitting, using a footstool or anything to elevate the legs as much as possible should be used. Proper fitting shoes and socks should always be used, and new shoes with more space may need to be purchased so that swelling does not become constrictive, accumulated in the ankle region during the day. If there are prescription drugs being taken such as hormones, blood pressure medications, steroids, anti-depressants, or others, a patient should consult with the doctor to determine whether or not ankle swelling is a side effect of a current medication. Sodium intake should be limited, as high sodium diets may contribute to swelling. Long periods of driving should be broken up with regular breaks. Regular exercise may also reduce ankle swelling.

Meditation
Can Christmas leave you feeling a bit stressed out or run down? Perhaps the ancient art of meditation can help?
D
oes it work? If you were a doctor, then you would probably refer to a database such as the Cochrane library. In a Cochrane Library article exploring the efficacy of meditation techniques for illnesses, it was concluded that meditation is safe and effective for treating certain illnesses, particularly in nonpsychotic mood and The term meditation is used to describe many different meditative disciplines. The aim of most practices is to reduce your stress levels and change your emotional reactions. Most modern meditative practices originated from Eastern religious and spiritual traditions but meditation doesn’t need to be based on any specific traditions or beliefs. Today, many thousands of people from different cultures around the world meditate; so, if you’re thinking about trying it for yourself, you definitely won’t be alone.
• Get comfortable. • Focus your attention. Focusing your mind on your breathing for five minutes is and easy and effective method. • Be open-minded. If you’re trying meditation for the first time and you can’t focus straight away, remember that it’s a practice – so you will need to do just that. Christmas time is a particularly busy time of the year when our bodies actually want to hibernate and this causes stress. I have found that for myself and many of my clients that taking some time out for a meditation session actually brings back some of the magic of Christmas.
Scientists who research meditation think it may work by affecting the part of your nervous system that controls the ‘fight-orflight response’. • Find a quiet location. Meditation requires focus, so to prevent distractions, go somewhere you can relax and won’t be disturbed. An organised session is the easiest way to get the most out of your time, so I am running a Winter Solstice meditation Session from 10:30 to 12:30 on Thursday 19th December and Saturday 21st December at Wake House, 41 North Road, Bourne. Sporting Spotlight - Fencing
T
he sport of fencing isn’t one that you would normally associate with Bourne, but the recent success of 16 year old Theo Edwards has started to change that assumption. Theo (pictured) has recently been selected as part of the Great Britain U17 Epee squad, having travelled to Bonn in early November and now heading out to Copenhagen in December. The remarkable part of this achievement is that Theo only started fencing at age 14, and is now in a squad with youngsters who have been involved in the sport from the age of nine or ten. Fencing has three different disciplines, epee, foil and sabre, each using a different type of blade, and with different parts of the body used as the target. Luckily these days none of the weapons are sharp, but they are all still made of forged or rolled metal. Theo started by fencing foil, a fast light thrusting weapon, where you try to hit your opponent on the body with the tip of the blade. Arms, legs and the head are all ‘off target’. Theo now mainly fences epee, a larger and heavier weapon, but still using a thrusting motion. In epee the whole body is a target, even your feet, so you have more options to make a hit but have more defending to do to stop yourself getting hit. The third type of weapon, the sabre, uses more of a slashing movement, with the target being from the top of the hips upwards. Different fencing clubs tend to focus on one of these three weapons, though some provide coaching in all three. Theo fences foil at ‘The Custodians Fencing Club’, who meet on a Friday evening at the Spalding Leisure Centre (www. custodiansfencingclub.co.uk). This club runs courses for adults and older teenagers (typically aged 14 upwards) though also offers training for younger fencers. For epee, Theo attends the ‘Oundle, Peterborough and Stamford Epee Club’
December Golf Tip Improve your chipping
who meet at Peterborough High School sports hall on a Monday evening and at Oundle School sports hall on a Thursday (www.eliteepee.com). The OPS Epee Club has fencers attending from age nine years upwards right through to adults. New fencers come to the sport at all ages, and some even start when they retire. For Theo, he quickly moved from attending club training to entering county, regional and then national competitions, all of which are available for fencers across the age groups. Last year (2012) Theo fenced in the national Leon Paul Junior Series, and from his top four competitions won the U15 Epee series and came 9th in foil. Most fencers only compete in one weapon, and for the last twelve months this has been epee for Theo, where he came third in the national Elite Epee Junior Series at U16, and is currently ranked 8th nationally at U17, with the top nine securing automatic GB selection throughout the 2013/14 season. Theo’s fencing achievements have also been recognised by the Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, who have supported him during 2013 as one of their Elite Athletes. Although not the best known of sports, fencing is really fast, and fun to do, but also exciting for the spectator (often the transporting parent). And for those watching, you are not outside at the side of a pitch in the cold and rain. For more information about fencing or how to go about learning to fence, both local club websites have lots of detail. You can also visit www.britishfencing.com who oversee the sport. Tip supplied by PGA professional Darren Game of Bourne Golf Studio 01778 395992
If you get tense when standing over a chip shot try to hold the club as light as you can. This will give an increase in the sense of weight in the head of the club giving a sensation of a flow to the chipping motion opposed to the short, tense, stubby motion of a tense golfer. Happy golfing and remember to contact me with any problem shots you want help with.

Your Finances
Choosing the most appropriate annuity If there is a favourite topic I like to help people with, it is “at retirement” planning and this is because there are so many options which the public are not aware of. Most people think that the default option is annuities, but did you know that if you used to smoke or drink or had any illnesses in the past, this could enhance your retirement income. This surprises most people. If there is something I always recommend, at retirement speak to a Financial Adviser before making the final choice. At Landmark, we offer the initial meeting without cost or obligation. The ABI has introduced a ‘Code of Conduct on Retirement Choices’ to help people to find the most appropriate way of funding their retirement income. It is not always enough, however, to shop around for the right annuity provider – it is also important to consider the various types of annuities available so you ensure you select the one that suits you best. According to figures from MGM Advantage, annuity rates climbed by 3% during the first three months of 2013, registering their first quarterly rise for two years. However, annuity rates have buckled under the twin downward pressures exerted by low gilt yields and longer lifespans and have fallen steadily over the past two decades. During the last three years, rates have fallen by a fifth, reaching their lowest-ever level in 2012, and they are unlikely to show much improvement in the near future. Over an 18-year retirement, for example, a typical pension pot of £50,000 would generate an income more than £10,000 lower than an annuity from only two years ago. Usually, an individual would purchase an
annuity that provides them with a fixed level of income. However, a report sponsored by MGM Advantage and Prudential suggests individuals with relatively large pension pots (typically worth more than £50,000) should consider annuities that are linked to investments. Last year, only 15,000 people – about 8% of the annuity market – chose investment-linked annuities, which offer a relatively high level of flexibility alongside the scope for additional income growth. This is not because they are poor value, but they are usually recommended by a Financial Adviser. Their plans are not risk-free as the level of income generated can go down as well as up, but are a valid option to consider. According to MGM Advantage, the difference between the best and worst annuity rates can be as much as 30%. Around 450,000 people now purchase an annuity every year and, against a difficult backdrop of falling annuity rates and higher prices, it has never been more important to make sure you are obtaining the best deal. MGM Advantage calculates up to 70% of retirees could qualify for an enhanced annuity, which pays a higher level of income to individuals who smoke or who are affected by certain medical conditions.

GADWIN - Capture any part of your screen It is extremely rare that my ‘better half’ waxes lyrical about a piece of software but after introducing her to Gadwin Print Screen she claims this is the best piece of software ‘ever’ and insisted that this latest article be about it. With orders like that who am I to argue! With her work in primary education this tool has proven invaluable for prepping classroom activities and similarly, for my articles and lectures it has saved me hours of work. However, the use is not limited to education and the tool can be used for any situation where you want to capture all, or part, of the screen. Whether this be a copy of a PDF document that you’ve been sent or to grab an image off the internet. Now it is true that Windows 7 and 8 have an inbuilt Snipping tool that works in a similar way, but Gadwin is far more flexible and superior. To download it you should go to the Gadwin website download page at http://www.gadwin.com/ download Here you will find a free version and a Professional (paid) version. The freeware version suits me fine but if you want additional editing tools and annotation capability then the Professional version offers this for approx £16. 1. Click on the download link and select Run to install it 2. Once installed double click on the Gadwin Printscreen icon to open it 3. Click on Preferences 4. If you wish you can change the activate key but it is set as default to the Print Screen key 5. Set whether you want to run the application when Windows starts Now let’s set up the ‘default’ that we require. I find the most useful setting is to be presented with the
60
option to draw a rectangle around whatever I want to capture from the screen. Let’s look at how to do this. 6. Click on Source 7. Choose your preferred option – in this case Rectangle 8. Click OK So we have now set the activation as the Print Screen button and a rectangular area. Now let’s decide what we want to do with it once we’ve captured the image or rectangular area. As you can see in the picture, you have a number of choices, and this is where the versatility of this great application comes to the fore. You can choose to print it straight out to your printer, save it as an image file or simply copy it to the clipboard for pasting into another document. 9. Select where you want to send the screen capture and click OK 10. If sending to a file then choose where to store it using ‘capture directory’ and what to call it ‘file name’ 11. Click OK You should now see the Gadwin icon in the bottom status bar on the far right of your desktop on your PC. This means it is running and waiting for you to press the Print Screen button. When you do you can now draw a rectangle around ANY part of the screen, and save, copy or print it on your PC. By the way, the last setup tab, Image, lets you choose the type of file created. I generally use jpg as it is compatible across systems and applications.

Pet’s Corner
Christmas with your pet As we know Christmas is round the corner and as ever the tree is up and decorated as early as possible, the drinks cabinet starts to overflow and the food shopping has started to encroach on the weekly shop and there is never enough cupboard space, so we start hiding away the culinary delights from those prying eyes, sticky fingers and inquisitive appetites in a bid to save some if not all of the treats for Christmas day. So, how many of you think about your pets safety when dotting bits around the house? When you’re wrapping and hiding chocolates under the tree, leaving Christmas decorations hanging in easy to reach places and my personal experience of storing bottles of wine on a lower shelf than normal. All of these pose dangerous hazards to inquisitive dogs especially, and sadly some of the everyday things we love at Christmas can poison or injure our beloved pooch so here are some tips to help avoid the vets at Christmas: • Think before you leave your dog alone in a room! Make it all pooch proof! • Ensure sure fairy light cables are tucked away and secured with something such as tape • Holly and mistletoe is poisonous so keep it out of reach • Don’t hang chocolate in trees or leave them as presents under the tree as Chocolate is poisonous too • During dinner never leave the turkey unattended as cooked turkey bones are extremely dangerous Mostly use your common sense when leaving your pets alone in a room for a minute, there’s a lot that can happen in a split second which can seriously dampen your Christmas spirit! Christmas is a lovely time to give gifts and if you chose to give a puppy (or kitten) I’m sure you will have thought about the commitment to training, walking, vet bills, upkeep and how your daily life will change forever! However sadly there are 1000’s of pets given up soon after Christmas when
it is apparent that the cute ball of fluff is noisy, attention seeking, mischievous, demanding and in some cases grows rapidly in a few weeks to larger than you thought! However if you have embarked on your journey with your little one at Christmas please remember new puppies need time out and a place to get away from the noise and madness of it all so a crate or a bed separated by a baby gate are essential to allow them to feel safe and ensure you have all the necessities such as food, bowls, lead, collar, poo bags, chews and training pads/ newspaper. If you’re in doubt or would like some help in choosing a suitable breed of dog or cat for you and your family, maybe you would consider taking in a rescue? If so contact your local pet care professional for help and advice.

Fancy learning music and French? Tim Lawrence, who qualified in music from Trinity College London (L.T.C.L), has since enjoyed a period teaching, composing and playing in England and France. He began in England as director of music in the private sector covering schools in Kent and East Sussex, before leaving with his wife and young daughter to live and work in France, their three grown-up sons having already flown the nest. There he enjoyed twenty six years teaching music privately and English in French primary schools - he also helped students improve their standards of English before taking the ‘Brevet’ (French equivalent of a GCSE) and the ‘Baccaloreat’ (French equivalent of A level). During his life in France, he formed a children’s orchestra which regularly gave concerts raising money for charity such as ‘Medicine Sans Frontiers.’ 2013 saw their return home in order to be near family and friends. Having found their new home in the beautiful village of Dyke, they experienced a warm and generous welcome from their new neighbours and local businesses. After attending to the house and much overgrown garden, his personal studio is now up and running ready for business and now he is raring to go! Music of course and French lessons with special emphasis on examination preparation.

Motoring
Tyres and your safety Over 12000 motorists are injured per year in collisions where illegal, defective or underinflated tyres are a contributory factor. Adequate tread depth is essential to ensure that water is displaced beneath the contact spot where the tyre meets the road. A tyre with less tread depth is less efficient at removing the water and leads to longer stopping distances and less effective all round handling such as cornering and acceleration. On a wet road a tyre with 8mm of tread will stop, from 50mph, in around 25 metres. A tyre with only 1.6mm of tread (the legal minimum) will stop in around 37metres. This is a full 12metres longer.
Part worn tyres
In tough economic conditions many drivers are opting to buy part worn tyres believing this offers best value for money however, if the driver looks at cost per millimetre of usable tread, this proves to be a false economy. New tyres will normally have 8mm of tread when fitted whereas a part worn tyre can have as little as 2mm and will have to be replaced sooner. Historically the driver has no knowledge of that part worn tyre, it may have been removed from a crashed vehicle and been subject to internal structural damage that cannot be seen. A recent survey on part worn tyres revealed:
98% were illegal for sale 16% contained dangerous or unsafe repairs 18% contained potentially lethal forms of damage or noncompliance. Part worn? or Part lethal?
64
Tyre inflation
Keeping the tyres correctly inflated is essential for safety, braking, grip and tyre life. Pressures are related to loads, speeds and vehicle handling. Under inflation causes excessive flexing, deterioration of the casing and wear on the tread shoulders. Fuel consumption will also rise as drag on the road increases. Over inflation will give an uncomfortable ride, wear on the centre of the tyre will increase and the handling will be affected due to less contact area with the road. Any impact or debris damage will not be absorbed by the tyre. Tyre pressures should be checked fortnightly even if you have a tyre monitoring system on your car. Overall, tyres not kept at the correct pressure will wear out more quickly Tyres should be checked monthly for damage, cracks, crazing, cuts, bulges or sidewall damage. If a driver has a tyre that suffers a severe impact, it should be inspected immediately by a qualified tyre specialist.

was once an expensive commodity only used by the rich or the paranoid. Today the modern business and family are realising it is a sensible lowcost deterrent to burglars and an invaluable tool should a burglar break-in. A lot of businesses with dummy CCTV are also realising that it doesn’t cost as much as they thought it would to get the real-thing installed. With today’s modern CCTV technology you can check your smartphone or tablet while you’re away from home and be reassured by live images from all of your cameras at home. This can also be particularly beneficial to those with outbuildings and barns such as farmers and stables. You can keep an eye on animals and expensive plant machinery from the comfort of your living room via wireless cameras and transmitters. Also, the NFU will give you a reduced insurance premium if you have CCTV installed. A police spokesman said: “We recognise and endorse the use of CCTV as both a preventative and an evidence gathering tool. CCTV has been used widely and indeed instrumental in securing convictions in a number of dwelling burglaries as well as other crimes. This is even possible (occasionally) when an individual’s face is obscured as we can use relative dimensions to work out things like height build etc.” For further information or a no-obligation quote contact Neil Walker CCTV on 07866 660067 or 01778 348049, visit www.neilwalkercctv.co.uk

...Christmas Day in the workhouse
M
by Rex Needle
usic hall audiences were entertained during Victorian times with a monologue written in 1879 by playwright and poet George Sims called Christmas Day in the Workhouse in which he described the bleak conditions of those driven there by poverty and ill luck. But there were treats on Christmas Day when life was enlivened by a few hours of seasonal cheer. Such it was at the Bourne workhouse which was built in Union Road [now St Peter’s Road] in 1836 with room for 300 paupers who lived in grim and uncongenial surroundings with hardly enough to eat let alone luxuries. They therefore looked forward to some relief on Christmas Day such as that in 1877 when they were provided with a dinner of roast beef and plum pudding and entertained by a local group known as the Bourne Amateur Minstrels and even given small presents from underneath a Christmas tree donated by Lord Aveland, a local landowner. In 1923, there were similar luxuries to celebrate the festive season when the various rooms were decorated and the extra food included pork pie for breakfast, roast beef, roast pork, hare, and plum pudding for dinner, plum cake and jam for tea and afterwards the children received presents of toys while there were sweets for the women and tobacco for the men.

These additional comforts were usually paid for by wealthy townspeople who often dropped in on Christmas Day to see how their money was being spent and to receive the thanks of the inmates. The Board of Guardians who ran the workhouse also ensured that they were appreciative of this charity and one of them, an eleven-year-old boy, no doubt guided by them, wrote thanking them for providing such a happy Christmas and the lovely toys which Santa Claus had brought them. The letter concluded: “From one of the grateful little boys.”

In 1930, the role of the premises was adapted for various medical and welfare uses and subsequently became St Peter’s Hospital for women and children. But this facility was also phased out during the late 20th century and after standing empty for several years, the building was demolished in 2001. The site has since been swallowed up by the printing firm, Warners Midlands plc, but Sims’ monologue remains a stark reminder of the harshness and social stigma of the workhouse system that is thankfully no longer with us.
