Bourne Discovering

W

here did January go? I can’t believe it’s already February, but the weather is still cold and gloomy, no signs of spring yet! However, this month we have Valentine’s Day to look forward to and businesses in Bourne have been pulling out the stops to offer lovely gifts, flowers and food for this special celebration of romantic love. We have a lot to be proud of in Bourne, not least our two secondary schools and some very talented pupils. Some of this talent was on display at the Wild Heart Café last month when some of our young musicians played an acoustic evening. Bourne Grammar has been hailed for sporting success and Bourne Academy is proud to be part of a group of organisations who have successfully campaigned for a new town trail for the town. Read about both of these on page 14. In this month’s issue we have reinvented our quiz page by popular demand from readers. It’s now a full puzzle page including a Sudoku and ‘spot the spot’ – a picture of somewhere in Bourne – see if you recognise it! And finally each month we will be focussing on one of Bourne’s many clubs and organisations. This month meet 1st Bourne Company, the Girl’s Brigade. If you would like your club to be included please email me with your details. Once again many thanks to all our advertisers and contributors for your support in making Discovering Bourne so successful. And a huge thanks to all our readers for all your positive comments – please keep sending them in!

Congratulations to our competition winner of the beautiful Chlo Bo bracelet courtesy of Crown Jewellers was Susan Seymour who works at Jessie Bellamy in Bourne. 4

FREE Electric Vehicle Chargers ‘You don’t even need to own an electric vehicle’

Add value to your home

The great news is that the government is funding the installation of home charging units for electric vehicles, and you do not need to own an electric vehicle to benefit. Cawoods Electricians a Local Electrical Installation company are now offering free electric vehicle chargers to all suitable domestic properties. This is a first come first served service until the government funding ceases. Go to www. electricvehiclechargersbourne.co.uk to apply for your charger before it’s too late. POD Point Home units are installed by qualified installers, who ensure the charging unit is supplied by a separate electrical spur – in much the same way as a cooker or power shower have their own dedicated circuits. Installation can be completed in under half a day. The Home unit communicates with the on-board controls in the car and will not deliver current unless the charging gun is inserted into the vehicle socket. POD Point Home units are built to ISO 9001 standards, covered by a three year warranty, and safety certification (which is done by the installer), and installed to BS 7671. The charging units communicate using a built in GSM card which enables them to collect data about where the units are, and therefore where there will be increased loads on the energy network when people start to plug their electric vehicles in for charging. They are also trying to understand where they need to put in more public charging points, and will use the geography of these home charge units to work out where most public charge points need to be installed.

Electric cars are becoming more and more desirable as people become more environmentally conscious and fossil fuel prices continue to rise. With most of the major car manufactures launching Plug-In Hybrid models of their popular cars this year, plug in electric cars will become more and more popular. Having the additional benefit of already owning an Electric Car Charger at the property may be a tipping point in the sale of your property. Electric vehicles are cheaper to run than petrol cars, give off zero emissions therefore protecting the ozone layer and can be charged overnight ready for 100 miles of driving the next day.

How far will an electric car go? An electric car is propelled by one electric motor or more, using electrical energy stored in batteries or another energy storage device. Electric motors give electric cars instant torque, creating strong and smooth acceleration. The cost of charging an electric car depends on your electricity tariff. Fully charging a Nissan Leaf will drive around 100 miles and costs about £3 at standard rate electricity (13p per kWh), and just over £2 at an off-peak rate of 6p per kWh. Plug-In Hybrid electric cars are becoming very popular, these vehicles have a normal car engine and additional batteries, the batteries can often provide the power for the car for up to 30 miles which is more than enough for most people’s daily commute. When you need to go further the standard petrol/diesel engine with provide standard propulsion and hence allow the vehicle to be used as any other.

To apply for a free charger go to www. electricvehiclechargersbourne.co.uk . The company is offering free installation subject to terms and conditions.

Across the UK, thefts of catalytic converters from motor vehicles have more than doubled over the past three years and local reports of this type of crime continue to rise. Motorists can be left with repair bills of thousands of pounds. Thieves are ripping out the devices because they contain precious metals such as platinum and palladium. The global rise in the price of platinum has fuelled this illegal trade. Vans and 4x4s are Catalytic converters reduce particularly susceptible poisonous gases from the vehicle’s exhaust system and legislation introduced in 1993 required all cars (J reg onwards) to have 10:43:34 one. Although it is not illegal if you don’t have one; be aware that you would fail your MOT without. Further legislation Catalytic converters contain that came into valuable metals, which are often force on 1 October exported to mainland Europe 2013 banned cash payments for scrap metal with the aim of making it easier to trace people selling stolen metal, but one of the emerging problems identified is the direct export whereby they are being exported in containers to emerging economies where they are either reused or broken down there. HOW CAN YOU PREVENT THEFT? - Catalytic converters can be uniquely marked in acid with a serial number - Motorists are advised to keep their cars in garages or park in well-lit areas - Most converters are bolted on - but they can be welded, which makes them harder to remove - Fleet owners are advised to obstruct access to high vehicles by parking cars with lower ground clearance round them - CCTV cameras should also be installed and warning notices posted up nearby

Travel Column

By Clare Lockett, Travel Counsellor

It isn’t a myth –Turkey is a luxurious travel destination What comes to mind when thinking of a holiday to Turkey? A cheap and cheerful resort by the sea, complete with night spots lit by neon lights similar to those found throughout the continent in places like Spain and Greece? Or a hot and sweaty experience in the streets of Istanbul? It is not clear why certain places or countries get such a reputation. The simple fact of the matter is that Turkey is, if you want it to be, one of the most luxurious places you could ever wish to visit. The country is so vast that you can tailor a visit to suit your exact needs and to meet the highest of standards. In fact what many people aren’t aware of is just how diverse and varied Turkey is. It can be a great venue for a budget family break, a luxury week away or a fantastic cultural weekend away. There is something for everybody, and the ability for the country to offer luxury is often overlooked. The country is undoubtedly rich in history and is renowned for its friendly welcoming locals – one of the best places to experience this is the hustle and bustle of the bazaars of ancient Istanbul. If you enjoy food, you will without question enjoy Turkey. Istanbul has a fantastic reputation as a food lover’s paradise and it’s not too difficult to find out why. National dishes such

as kebabs heavily feature on local menus. If you find yourself in the bustling city of Istanbul, you will be able to find doner kebab on most street corners, but of course this is not for everybody, and finding a luxurious plate of food is not difficult. Restaurants such as Kasap Osman have doner kebab making down to a tee and this helps to explain why getting a table is such a challenge. Who would have thought that tucking into a doner kebab would qualify as luxurious? Forget about the take-aways we are used to back in the UK, kebabs are on another planet in Turkey. There are the magical underground cities and caves of Cappadocia to experience as well as the beautiful waters of the Mediterranean set against the backdrop of the mountains on the south-west coast. Contrary to popular belief there are a few unspoilt areas of the country which are simply stunning. As few people know these areas exist, this helps to make them special. You can enjoy the amazing scenery while staying at a luxurious hotel or resort with fantastic service to match. What’s more exciting is that many of these properties are quite a well-kept secret which make them feel quite exclusive and extra special. Turkey really can offer the luxury traveller an experience to rival any other country in the world, you just have to know where to look! If you want to experience secluded beaches, first class food and be pampered in stylish hotels, take a trip to Turkey and indulge yourself!

With us....it ’s personal

Heart!

Wonderful and Wild Music straight from the WORDS by T Fisk

IMAGES by Jess Hammond

O

n Wednesday 15th January, 2014, we were treated to an array of talented young performance musicians at the new and refreshing arts and cultural hub of Bourne Town Centre, now known to us as Wild Heart Café & Music Shop on Angel Precinct. Firstly, may I say what a revolutionary idea it is to have both a music shop and a café in the same open plan building and secondly what an artistic and ambient atmosphere can be created when you fill a small and quirky space with like-minded music lovers of all ages. It was a pleasure to observe and be a part of. First up was new three-piece Arco-Minor whose first appearance in Bourne warmed the audience through, with their growing confidence and familiar tunes: Oasis ‘Wonderwall’ a popular opener - the trio put their own spin on the instantly likeable classic from the 90’s - followed up with less obvious covers such as ‘Iris’ by the Goo Goo Dolls. The trio line up as Will Silver (Vocals), Will Saberton-Ward (Guitar) and Leon Burn (Cajon) and are all in Year 10 Bourne Academy, a product of their new BTEC Music course at KS4. We all wish the newly formed band every success as their original material has superb potential too, namely ‘Blinding Eyes’.

12

Frontman Will said: “We’re looking forward to recording all of the new tracks in the state of the art studio at Bourne Academy. What we’re learning about in the BTEC at present is how to produce our own EP ourselves and that’s exactly what we intend to do. We look forward to its release!” Ralph Shilcock (guitarist & banjoist) was next, a young string musician from Corby Glen, fresh from his inspiring workshops with Stefan Grossman. Ralph (adorned by his black acoustic guitar) plucked the strings delightfully with artistic diligence with his renditions of the known works of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch (for those of you that know their folk guitarists). Ralph’s subtle comic traits make him first a musician, but also an entertainer sharing intimate details

DiscoveringBourne February 2014 | www.discoveringbourne.co.uk

of where his own material was first conceived. Later, joined by his old compatriot and partner in musical crime Mark Insley (harmonica), which together they form the duo Omnishambles and shambolic they are anything but. It was instant delight in the reception of trad-classics such as ‘Spootiskerry’, ‘Drag Her Round the Road’ and ‘Twin Sisters’ which then morphs successfully into Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’. If you’re looking for a knees-up clap-along, then these boys deliver! The next act to grace the platform were nameless, but not shameless to be known as simply Eloise & Caleb. The two anything but unidentifiable musically speaking, as their choice of covers oozed acoustic alternative eclecticism, from bands such as Arcade Fire to Alt-J they drew fondness from the appreciative audience. Caleb (cajon & vox) has awesome rhythmic ability and the vocal talent to sing whilst playing such varied rudiments were impressive to watch. Eloise (guitar & vox) has the voice of an angel

and was probably heard as far as The Angel as the precinct provided the perfect acoustics once the door was swung open to let their melodic sounds escape as the venue filled-out during this time. There were ‘Little Talks’ as the audience stood or sat mesmerized by the young couple’s ability to master the recognisable hit single from ‘Of Monsters and Men’. And lastly, to headline the evening, Dumb (Ollie & Ben) treated us to their unique brand of acoustic rock and blues. With classics from artists such as Led Zeppelin to Jimi Hendrix these fellows can hold their own vocally and technically. The set was a treat from start to finish, so much so that an encore was required to satisfy the appreciative audience. We all believe in a thing called ‘Dumb’ and these chaps are anything but.

Many thanks once again to the folks at Wild Heart Music Shop & Café for hosting such a fantastic night’s entertainment for us. We hope to return there in late March. So keep your eye out for the Cutting Hedge posters. www.discoveringbourne.co.uk | February 2014

DT STOVES Bourne Grammar ESAA Inter-Boys Team

Our Super Schools

Bourne Grammar School has been named by School Sport Magazine as one of the top 30 best State Schools for Sport for 2013. This inaugural list of the top State Schools for sport recognises schools that provide excellent competitive opportunities for their pupils as well as high achievement across a range of 20 different sports in over 120 national competitions, and it honours those that take competition seriously, rather than those who have excelled in one sport. Bourne Grammar School is one of only two Lincolnshire state schools to feature on the list. Head of PE, Chris Ray said: "This is a remarkable achievement for the department, students and school that recognises the many hundreds of additional hours of coaching and guidance that the department has given in recent years. It is the culmination of much hard work by staff and students alike. It’s gratifying to find ourselves recognised amongst the top 30 state schools in the country in a year that has been equally as successful as the past six or seven." Bourne Grammar’s Headteacher added: “As it continues its expansion the school is on top form, as shown by our fabulous exam results (the best GCSEs in Lincolnshire, Rutland and Peterborough), our place in Tatler’s list of the country’s top 20 state secondary schools and now this wonderful accolade for our vibrant Sporting programme; it shows that as is true for all top schools, we are not just about academic excellence.”

Members of the Bourne Business Chamber met at Bourne Academy for the January meeting. They were shown around the school by Isobel Copley and treated to refreshments kindly cooked and provided by school students. Two new members were welcomed. Neil Walker of Neil Walker CCTV Installation, and Dean Pallett of Limehouse Interiors Ltd. Members discussed local news items including the approval of a new McDonalds which will be built off South Road, next to the Texaco filling station creating 65 jobs. The date of Bourne’s trade show has been set as March 20th this year, with another day for alternative health therapists on March 22nd. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 18th February at Wake House, starting at 6pm. If anyone is interested in joining the club please contact Paul Ross on 01778 440555 or email chairman@bournebusiness.co.uk

Sacro-iliac Joint problems

By Philip Hakim BSc(Hons) Ost Registered Osteopath

Symptoms:

Pain is usually felt on one side of the lower back often localised to the dimpled area just below your waistband. You may feel discomfort in the buttock, lower abdomen or groin regions too. Some patients report a sense that the affected leg feels a slightly different length or that it even drags or doesn’t swing properly when they walk. Occasionally the front of the thigh feels achy or appears to burn if they have been on their feet too long. Rest can be a relief although you can end up feeling slightly stiff afterwards and turning over in bed can be painful too. Found at the lower end of the spine, the Sacroiliac joints (SIJ) connect the sacrum (a triangular shaped bone at the base of the spine) to each of the larger outer pelvic bones (ilia) to make the pelvis complete. They act as shock absorbers allowing movement and body weight to be transferred in a smooth and controlled manner from the upper body through to the legs and vice versa.

Possible causes of injury:

SIJ injuries are not unusual. The more traumatic causes can include a fall onto your side such as a miss-timed sliding tackle, or slipping and landing onto your bottom. Less dramatic reasons include repetitive weight bearing activities such as running, jumping, dancing or gymnastics for example. In practice, a common cause is a sudden jolt to the pelvis such as missing a step or dropping into an unseen hole in the ground whilst walking the dog. A rounded or slouching posture can also be a triggering factor.

Treatment options:

In my experience, most SI problems respond really well to manual treatment. Using techniques to decompress or re-align the joints and straighten the pelvis can work really well to restore normal joint movement. Soft tissue massage and stretching can then reduce the localised muscle spasm and encourage a healthier blood flow to the tissues. This helps to drain away any inflammation built up and speed up the recovery. Muscle re-education can then strengthen the surrounding areas or correct any postural imbalances that may be contributing and reduce the likelihood of a reoccurrence. Sometimes a special pelvic belt or sports taping is useful to stabilise the joint for a while. Very occasionally the most persistence may need referring for a corticosteroid injection or further tests.

New clinic helps beat stress Stress and anxiety can affect anyone young and old and is a completely normal reaction experienced when people are faced with situations they feel under pressure in. The word ‘stress’ is generally used to describe the feelings people experience when the demands made on them are greater than their ability to cope. Trained stress counsellor Sarah Murtagh has set up a consultancy at Wake House offering talking therapy as well as relaxation and breathing classes. Stress can manifest itself as many different symptoms, ranging from physical to psychological and behavioural. Sarah said: “People can talk to me about their problems and we can work out whether they need talking therapy or another type of therapy. “For example with someone with panic attacks I would first of all work with them on the actual breathing techniques they can use to calm them down. “Then we can look at what’s causing the stress

and it depends on what is actually wrong with them. It may be that I will give them exercises to do at home. Talk to them on a one to one basis and find out what is the root of the problem. They may have to change their diet, nutrition can be an issue and they might have to change their lifestyle.” Sarah will also be offering a mentoring service, for individuals, and families who are struggling to cope with a difficult child.

Letting Go

By Ray Pawlett KI-Ways

During our winter Solstice meditation session, we did a series of meditations in which I become a story teller. After practicing some relaxation techniques together, we gathered in a group and I gave guided meditation sessions that would be very similar to listening to something like a radio play. If we can just close our eyes and drift off with it then the story unfolds in our “mind’s eye”.

A

s we were saying goodbye to the

autumn, the meditation was based around what Nature is doing at the end of autumn. I asked the group to imagine a tree with its last remaining leaf before they are all shed for the winter. Then we imagined that there was a word written on the leaf that signifies something that we need to let go of in our lives. It could be the name of an ex-partner, an organisation that is no longer important to us or anything from our past that we find

ourselves coming back to unnecessarily. We imagined that the tree was letting go of the leaf and that it was falling to the floor. Tree and leaf were free of each other. We let go of the thought. We are no longer held back by old thought patterns. Although it is a very simple practice, the psychology is deep and the effect of such meditations can be profound. One person was inspired to paint – and see the results on the picture. Everybody felt like they had a sense of release from things that were pulling them back to the past.

If you would like to find out more, please contact Ray Pawlett on 07413 620344 or ray.pawlett@o2.co.uk for more details.

Zumba® Craze in South Lincolnshire Working out can be healthy, rewarding, and beneficial, but it’s never been known to be this much fun…UNTIL NOW!

Everyone knows that working out is beneficial, but with today’s demanding schedules, it is easy for our fitness routines to get put on the back burner. However, when working out becomes something we love to do, it is much easier to make it a priority. Zumba® is “exercise in disguise”! Coining the concept of fitness-party™ and making fitness fun, Zumba® has spread like wild-fire, and has positioned itself as the single most influential movement in the industry of fitness. Since its inception in 2001, the Zumba® programme has grown to become the world’s largest – and most successful – dance-fitness program with more than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba® classes in over 110,000 locations across more than 125 countries. Finally, it is a type of exercise people want to do every day, they feel good about doing it, and it is for everyone. While Zumba® embraces all the fundamental principles of fitness, the extraordinary secret behind it is how it magically motivates the body to efficiently burn calories, effectively tone all muscle groups, incorporate full range of motion, and improve the cardiovascular system. Fun and music are the two special motivational ingredients. Participants are constantly engaged and entertained with the variety of Latin rhythms including salsa, merengue, samba, belly dancing, cumbia, flamenco, reggaeton, and more! Zumba® breaks away from the typical 32-count aerobic format and uses the passion of the music as it was meant to be experienced. Even those with

two left feet are successful in a Zumba class because of the natural flow of the simple steps that radiate though the body in synch with the music. “There is no right or wrong, just have fun and let yourself get swept away by the music”, says Zumba® instructor Sofia Silva Medd. “Zumba® brings the whole community together. It’s a fantastic way to have a blast while enjoying the benefits of exercise and burning over 800 calories. ” Dancing and exercising as a whole has always brought Sofia a lot of enjoyment, and now she brings that joy to others during her Zumba® Fia classes. Sofia or as most might call her Fia, has been teaching Zumba for almost 3 years in Stamford, Bourne and Thurlby areas. She has also brought the community together to raise money for important charities by organising several Zumbathons and raising over £3000. “Zumba with Sofia is full of fun! The perfect mix of pumping Latin music, hot routines and, of course Sofia bringing the party to life. I forget all about work and chores and properly let my hair down. And my fitness has really improved too! I’m always recommending Sofia’s class to friends (and sometimes strangers!). It’s fab!” says Elaine Crane, a regular attendee and a Zumba Fitness instructor herself. Zumba® Fia classes are currently being run: Mondays – Bourne Abbey Church Hall, 8.15-9.15pm Tuesdays – Stamford Queen Eleanor School, 7-8pm Thursdays – Stamford Rhino’s gym – 9.30-10.30am Thursdays - Thurlby Methodist Church, 7-8pm Come and see for yourself what Zumba® Fitness is all about. Your Health

By Mr J. Sunner. DO. BSc (ost). Registered Osteopath

Recognising Symptoms of Arthritis in the Hands Quite often people experience arthritis symptoms in their hands before other signs of arthritis show up, so arthritis prevention is tough because we only notice the problem when it’s too late! Different forms of arthritis affect the hands in different ways. For example, osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis is caused by the cartilage “shock absorber between joints “ wearing down in the joints. This can run in families or it can be du to sheer repetitive hard work! The most common areas that are affected are in the fingers and the joints of the thumb. The pain can be quite difficult and can ultimately cause symptoms that can prevent the sufferer from carrying out simple tasks such as holding a pen or even a knife and fork. Although this is not too common.

especially when doing exercises intended to build strength. When pain occurs, rest and pain management may be a better bet. Try these range-of-motion exercises to keep your hands, fingers, and thumbs (which affect about 60 percent of grip strength) flexible and to ease symptoms of arthritis in the fingers and in the hands overall:

The Symptoms of arthritis in the hands may include:

Make circle motions with your thumb, keeping it straight.

Pain in some or all of the joints, including joints of the fingers, wrists, and thumbs, the growth of bony knobs on finger joints, numbness in fingers, painful joints in the cold. Difficulty with motions that require gripping and twisting, such as opening jars. The progression of arthritis in the hands can actually be measured and joint damage of osteoarthritis is usually seen on X-rays.

Exercises That Help Relieve Arthritis in the Fingers and Hands

“If someone is pain free, it is critical to keep joints in good range of motion. Simple shoulder shrugs, wrist, and finger range of motion exercises help keep joint range of motion,” Being pain free is the key, I stress this to my patients

Close your fist and then gradually open your hand, stretching your fingers out, then close slowly into a fist again.

Stretch your thumb away from the palm of your hand, then use it to touch each fingertip. Repeat these exercises 3 to 10 times daily. Stop if you feel pain in a joint or if you’re experiencing additional pain (lasting more than two hours) once you’re done. Some people find that doing these hand exercises under warm water is helpful. If you have osteoarthritis, you may need to wear a splint, wear a compression glove, or use another type of support to help reduce wear and tear on your joints during your daily activities. You can also try squeezing a soft ball to build grip strength and help lessen symptoms of osteo -arthritis in your hands.

February Golf Tip Winter training two - aiming Last month I mentioned the importance of a correctly aimed club face. Just like the club face, if you want to make more consistent and straighter shots, the alignment of your hips and shoulders are just as important to have aligned correctly. Use this month to firstly check the alignment and then train yourself to be able to repeat the correct position every time. To do this you need your alignment sticks, thread one through the two front belt loops on your trousers, so the stick points from hip to hip. Then with the other place it under your armpits as you take up your set up position. Although a little awkward you can now check that your hips and shoulders are parallel to each other AND parallel to your target line. I hope you enjoy this tip to improve your game and golf lessons are available in Bourne Golf Studio to help you enjoy your golf more, call me on 01778 395992 or email darren@bournegolfstudio.com Tip supplied by PGA professional Darren Game

The most romantic day of the year … S

t Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th February every year and known as a day to give your loved one cards and gifts. The romantic celebration drives huge sales of flowers, chocolates and gifts and restaurants and eateries are often booked up weeks before the special day. Although there are many myths and stories about the origin of Valentine’s Day, it is most commonly believed to be named after an early Christian Saint named Valentinus who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. When his actions were discovered, Emperor Claudius II ordered him to be put to death. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl - possibly his jailor's daughter - who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include hearts, flowers and the figure of the winged Cupid. Each year in Britain, we spend around £500m on cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts for Valentine's Day. Traditionally these were sent anonymously, but nowadays we often make it clear who is sending each 'Valentine'.

Gemstone of the month

The gemstone of the month is Amethyst, Amethyst are the light to deep purple variety of Quartz. Amethyst are highly regarded by the Church, as the stone is thought to ensure peace of mind, a love of fairness, a sense of duty and a devotion to high moral principles. Many beautiful examples were set into Bishops regalia including rings. The gems are also credited with the ability to protect the wearer from drunkenness. Amethysts are found in either river beds or as large Geodes from Brazil, Africa, America and Canada. The gems can be cut in many ways but usually faceted and set to make stunning pieces of jewellery. • Crown Jewellers, 15c North Street, Bourne, PE10 9AE 01778 393994 www.crown-jewellers.co.uk

Champagne - The Food of Love By Leigh Johnson

With Valentines day just around the corner, the incurable romantics among us, me included, will be planning something special for our (not so) secret loves.

T

he celebrations will usually include a meal out somewhere exciting but beforehand, an exchange of gifts over a glass of champagne really sets the mood. It is true to say that nothing lifts the spirit and gets the nerves jangling quite like champagne. The effervescence and the sense of grandeur exudes the feeling of romance and one can’t help but be drawn in to the occasion. It is traditional to enjoy rose champagne at Valentines. However, producers seem to insist on forcing huge mark-ups on rose, which actually costs no more to make than white champagne. Champagne can be a blend of up to three grape varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunièr. The latter two are red grape varieties. Normally, the grapes are crushed and the skins are immediately then separated from the pressed ’ the pressed wine is left on juice. To make rose, the skins until the right amount of colour from the skins has been extracted to provide the rose colour desired. There is no additional cost in this process, just a little more time and yet rose champagne can often cost 50% more. Nonetheless, rose can somehow seem more romantic and more indulgent and for a special occasion we often don’t mind paying the extra cost. It should be possible to buy a decent rose champagne from one of the major champagne houses for between £25 and £35 per bottle. A rose Cava for around £10 is a perfectly acceptable substitute for romantics on a budget. However, straight champagne is not the only choice. How about demonstrating your devotion with a champagne cocktail? A traditional choice is Kir Royale. This involves one part cassis (a dark, sweet blackcurrant liqueur) and five parts of nonrose champagne. The sweetness makes it a very easily enjoyed choice, nice with chocolates too. Kir Royale shows some imagination but in my view, if you really want to impress, try serving a traditional champagne cocktail. They are extremely easy to make but are so different that you are sure to win over that special person in your life. To make a champagne cocktail, take a single sugar cube and place it in the bottom of your champagne flute. Squirt two or three drops of

26

DiscoveringBourne

Angostura bitters onto the sugar cube. Next pour in a tablespoon of brandy (about 15 to 20 mls) and then top up with white champagne. Lastly, flex a twist of orange peel over the top of the glass and insert a neatly trimmed spiral of orange peel into the glass. Hey presto, pucker up and prepare yourself for love!

Your Finances

By Paul Ross, Landmark IFA LTD

Common Financial Mistakes, Myths (and some Magic!) Life Assurance:

• If you took out a life assurance policy when you were a smoker and have now been a non-smoker for more than a year, then you will probably qualify for a cheaper premium. This may also be the case if you have lost a lot of weight or recovered from illness since the time you applied for insurance cover. • If your life assurance company has increased your premiums because of your health then it may be worth looking elsewhere. Not all companies treat health issues in the same manner. An extreme case, but I came across someone who was paying £149 per month for whom I have now found equivalent cover for just £53 per month. Magic! • Many people do not place life assurance plans into trust - probably because they are simply unaware of the possible benefits of doing so. When written in trust, a successful death claim is far quicker to sort out as there is no need to wait for probate and the funds are distributed by the trustees in accordance with your wishes rather than through a will or the laws of intestacy. It can also be tax efficient as the proceeds are outside your estate for inheritance tax purposes thereby avoiding IHT. Believe it or not, the whole form can take less than 5 minutes to complete and it could save a lot of hassle and many thousands of pounds. Magic!

Income Protection – where you receive

payments if you are unable to work through illness or accident • I have found income protection plans proposed on the wrong basis, the wrong type of occupation, with a wrong end date and without

40

any indexation meaning that the income amount insured no longer meets the client’s needs. It is very important to ensure these plans are written on the correct basis and meet your current requirements. If you have one, it is important to review it regularly.

Pension Plans

• The sooner you start putting money away for a pension in the future, the better that future is likely to be. People often delay saving until they’re in the forties and then realise that the amount they have to put away to finance their retirement is far more than they had expected (hoped). Don’t tell yourself you cannot afford to save, tell yourself you cannot afford not to! • People appear to be sucked in by the negative press surrounding some pension plans, put their heads in the sand and tell themselves that pensions are a waste of time. I believe pension saving still offers the best long-term provision for income in retirement and dependence on state provision is something to be avoided if you can do so. • When times are hard, people sometimes stop paying into their pension plans but when things get better, they forget or neglect to restart their pension contributions. Also, review the amount you pay into your pension regularly. • It is important to ensure the investment funds within your pension are appropriate for you and your attitude to risk. I regularly meet people who have paid into a pension for many years but have never known or understood what they were investing in. What was perhaps a good place to be a few years ago is not necessarily the place to be today.

SPOTIFY - a world of music at your f inger tips If you love music and you have not yet ventured into the world of Spotify then you are missing a trick. Looking for that old song that you haven’t heard for years? Want to listen to a band’s new album before paying out your hard earned cash for it? Want to discover similar artists to those that you already like? Spotify can provide this and more. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? There are currently three plans. The basic version, which is free but funded by having adverts played between tracks. Premium PC Only which costs £4.99 per month and allows playback on your desktop PC or Premium Everywhere which is £9.99 per month and allows you to play back music, advert free, from any device including smart phones and tablets. HOW DO I GET IT? For your PC or laptop go to the Spotify Website www.spotify.com, sign up for an account (free or otherwise) and download the Windows or MAC client for your system. This will then install on your system and you can access Spotify via the desktop icon. For smartphones and tablets, go to your featured Store (Google Play, Amazon Store, Apple Store etc.) and search for Spotify. You’ll need a full premium account to play back on these devices though. Note that you can trial the Premium service free for one month. When downloading you can either create a new account with your email details, or use your Facebook account to login. If you are a Facebook user then this is a good way to connect as it will let you share music and see the shared music and playlists of your Facebook friends. HOW DO I USE IT? One thing that can be said is that Spotify is very easy to use. To search for a band or song, click in the search box at the top of Spotify and search for the item that you want to listen to. In the example I have searched for the Osmonds and you can see

the first page of results. To play a track double click on the song title. To see other Osmond tracks click on the band name. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO? There are lots of other features to discover. You can create your own playlists, add your own record collection to your Spotify interface, follow your favourite bands, look for concerts and much more. One feature that I like and use a lot is the ‘artist radio’ button. You choose an artist and click this button and it will play similar music in a ‘custom’ radio station. DO ARTISTS GET PAID FOR SPOTIFY PLAYS? The short answer is yes. However, some artists are not happy with the amount of royalties being paid by Spotify and have either refused to list their music or have withdrawn from the service. Thankfully (for us) they are in the minority and many artists feel that Spotify offers an effective medium for spreading their art. I recently wrote to a rock band (Liberty Lies) that I discovered on Spotify and asked their opinion. I don’t own the album and I listen to them on Spotify using my £4.99 a month subscription. Their response was positive and they cited that if it hadn’t been for Spotify I may never have heard of them and would not have gone to gigs to see them. So, as you can see, opinions vary.

Winter Driving As the weather turns colder we should have checked our vehicles to make sure tyres, tyre pressures, coolant and washer levels are correct and that the all round condition of the vehicle will see us through the winter months however, it is not too late to have your garage check your car for you. It makes sense to make sure your vehicle is in good running order now, before the colder weather sets in. Additionally, we can make things easier for ourselves by carrying some essentials with us. Regular servicing and checking your vehicle before setting off on a journey will reduce your chances of breaking down. It is always good practice to carry an emergency kit. These few simple items stored in your car can make the difference when stranded, and may prevent you from being a casualty. Always try to have your fuel tank OVER half full, if stranded you can at least stay warm with engine running and re-charge your phone if needed.

First aid kit Torch and spare batteries Warm clothes and a blanket or a sleeping bag, boots, food and a warm drink in a thermos. Some bottled water. Reflective warning sign Ice scraper and de-icer A shovel Jump leads Sunglasses for the glare of snow Fully charged mobile phone and car charging lead – remember not to use your phone while driving

Driving top tips: • Look out for changes in road surface – some surfaces are less resistant to ice forming Where shade is cast onto the road ice will not melt • Isolated roads may not be gritted. If the road has been gritted, don’t assume it has worked – grit doesn’t work at below – 8 degrees and doesn’t work at all on snow. • Use your gears and engine braking to slow 42

down. If you have to use your brakes, do so in a straight line before entering a corner • Before setting off it is worth checking travel updates to make sure there are no problems on your route John Siddle, Communications Manager Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership says: “Be prepared for the very worst case should it all go wrong. Make sure you plan your route and you have a road map as a back up to your SatNav. Get a travel update before you set off and listen to the travel and weather news as you go. If the weather is bad and the forecast is for it to get worse – do you need to travel at all? If you do need to travel and your car has been prepared for winter driving and you have your emergency kit, please ensure your windscreen is clean, the other windows are free from snow and ice and properly demisted. Clear the snow off the roof, bonnet and the boot of your car, even at slow speed ice and snow can slip over your windscreen and obscure your view. This can present a hazard for other road users. Slow down and give yourself extra time for your journey.’ Your stopping distance is multiplied by 10 in snow and ice!”

Why is a will so important Making a Will is the only way you can decide what happens to your property and possessions after your death.

I

f you do have a Will make sure you review it from time to time as your personal circumstances may have changed significantly since you made it. If you die without a Will, your estate will be distributed according to the law rather than your wishes. Making a Will is not as difficult as people sometimes think - in most instances it is a fairly straightforward and inexpensive procedure. I have lived with my partner for five years, will they inherit on my death? Not unless you have made a Will naming them as a beneficiary . If you die without making a Will then the rules of Intestacy apply unfortunately they do not provide for co-habitees only to those who are married or who have entered into a Civil Partnership. Your Partner may be able to make a claim against your Estate in certain circumstances.

die, will my parents be able to bring them up?

Your future

Not necessarily, unless you have appointed a guardian in your Will, whether it be a relative or a friend, no-one will be legally entitled to take care of the children and an application would have to be made to Court.

aim high

If I do not make a Will, does that mean that my spouse or Civil Partner will get everything?

A university level qualification you can afford!

No, this will not necessarily happen. If you die without making a Will then the rules of Intestacy have to be followed and this could mean that your spouse or civil partner does not inherit everything. Dealing with an Estate during bereavement is always a difficult task, so having a Will in place outlining your wishes can greatly assist your loved ones.

I have step children and I have raised them as my own children since they were young, will they inherit when I die?

2014/15 PROSPECTUS AVAILABLE NOW

They will not benefit unless you provide for them in your Will. If you die without making a Will then the rules of Intestacy apply unfortunately they make no provision for step-children.

...Town Band by Rex Needle

O

ne of the most popular forms of public entertainment in past times was a brass or silver band which has existed in Bourne intermittently for almost 200 years. Although all amateur players, they gave pleasure to many with their rousing public performances but none of them survived the years. The first Bourne Brass Band was in existence in 1843, fulfilling public engagements and playing in the market place on special occasions but did not survive although surprisingly, one of the instruments does, the engraved silver trumpet owned by Joseph Flatters who took it with him when he emigrated to North America in 1871 and it remains a prized possession of his descendants. A second band was formed in 1887 by Alfred Stubley, a local tradesman and choirmaster at the Baptist Church. He recruited over twenty musicians all possessing their own instruments who were soon playing at cricket matches and church fetes and giving promenade concerts at the Abbey Lawn, a musical entertainment then popular in England and which soon became a regular feature in the social life of the town. Most of the players joined the armed forces during the First World War of 1914-18 although there was still a tremendous enthusiasm in the town for making music and another band was formed soon after the men returned from

the front. In 1921, local tailor Richard Newton Pattison was appointed bandmaster and smart new uniforms in forest green with silver braid were purchased in time for their first concerts the following year. They also turned out for parades, social occasions and garden fetes, playing selections of popular melodies of the day throughout the event and then providing the music for dancing in the evening. The band was a particular favourite of the vicar at that time, Canon John Grinter, who made the vicarage lawn available for concerts during the summer months that were well attended for several years. But the Second World War began in 1939 and as members left for military service, closure became inevitable and it has not been re-formed since. The brass band tradition has been revived in recent years with music in the park by visiting bands playing in the War Memorial gardens on Sunday afternoons during the summer and there is also a move to form a new brass band for Bourne through the initiative of local osteopath Jo Sunner who is currently seeking musicians to join him in the venture.

These adventures include love, friendship, obedience, courage plus many more. The uniform has changed over the years. In the past we have had dresses, these changed to tunics, skirts, white blouses and blazers. This now been updated to bring in a variety of colours of fleeces, hoodies or sweatshirts worn over similar colour polo shirts. The girls are now able to wear trousers. Activities such as parades, camps and activity days still take place. In 2013, we celebrated our 120th Anniversary. In February the Bourne Company shared with the rest of the district a celebration service in Spalding. Additionally a district performance, at the South Holland Centre, took place in March and, in May, a district P.G.L. activity camp was attended by a number of girls, In October we held the Annual District parade and the girls shared in a fun evening at Fun Farm and Laser Quest, Spalding in November. The Girls’ Brigade is a Christian Organisation, International and Interdenominational. It was formed from three different organisations. The Girls’ Brigade of Northern Ireland was set up in Dublin in 1893, The Girls’ Guildry was set up in Scotland in 1900 and, in 1902 the Girls’ Life Brigade was formed. In 1963 they all came together to form the Girls’ Brigade. The Girls’ Brigade is comprised of individual companies whose leaders are DBS (formally CRB) checked and meetings are held in safe environments e.g. churches, schools, community halls. 1st Bourne Company started in Bourne in the early 1970’s by Mrs. Eileen Gardiner at Bourne Methodist Church, Abbey Road, Bourne where meetings are currently held on Thursday evenings from 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm during school term time. Girls aged from 5 to 11 years are most welcome. The work completed by each of the sections comprises of a four-fold programme of Physical, Educational, Spiritual and Service. 1st Bourne Company caters for two age groups - The Explorers 4-8’s programme which is called n:vestigate, and the Juniors 7-11 – n:gage. The n:vestigate programme takes the girls through an exciting journey of different experiences for example: - our planet; our favourite things, celebrations, and feelings. It is designed to meet the individual needs of the girls To be included in this directory, send your details to: sally@ discoveringbourne.co.uk
