pring is usually said to start at the beginning of March and the 21st of March is the Spring Equinox; the date on which day and night are of equal length. After weeks of rain and our news full of flooding daily it’s lovely to move into March with the promise of better weather and already, signs of shoots coming through the ground, and buds on hedges and trees. This month we have two dates to look forward to on our calendar. Firstly Shrove Tuesday on March 4th – commonly known as Pancake Day, and Mother’s Day on Sunday March 30th. Read our feature about three special Bourne mums whose lives have been far from ordinary. Also our super competition gives readers a chance to nominate their own mum to win a bouquet of flowers, courtesy of Stephanie’s Flowers. Take a read of our new storytime section. You will be amazed at the talent of the young Bourne Academy student, Oliver Cook, who supplied us with this month’s short story. I paid a visit to our new local Kitchen and Bedroom showroom – Limehouse Interiors, in Dyke. Email Scam Notice to appear in court Dear readers,

Following on from their musical success in the Bourne Rotary “Young Musician” competition Bourne Westfield’s choir and jazz band went on to compete in the Eastern semi-final held in Thrapston on Saturday 8th February with both categories scooping First Prize. Supported by a large group of family and friends the jazz band executed a musical rendition from ‘Grease’ along with ‘Boogie Blues’. Judges reported ‘A lot to commend here, rhythmically alert and tight.’ The choir, competing against two other school choirs brought the audience close to tears with their expertly sung ‘Lean on Me’ and ‘Hallelujah’. Judges commented on ‘A strong heartfelt performance, very well done.’ Music Co-ordinator at the school Rebecca Beavis commented “Saturday was an amazing day for our children. They work extremely hard to reach their high standard of musicianship and I am incredibly proud of them all.” The school enjoys a long tradition of singing success and Headteacher Elaine Radley commented “our children really wowed the audience in Thrapston on Saturday. Their triumph is a testament to their hard work and determination. It is very well deserved!” Both groups now move on to the District Final which will be held on 2nd March at Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre. 8

The Business Crime Reduction Centre (BCRC) is warning people about a new email scam that threatens victims with court. Fraudsters have been sending out legitimate looking spoofed emails designed to trick recipients into installing malware. The emails say you have been notified and scheduled to appear for a court hearing, and contains specific dates, times, locations and reference numbers. It asks you to download a copy of the “court notice” attached. The downloadable.zip file actually contains an .exe file (a file that executes when clicked) containing a virus. The email has no connection to the Criminal Justice System and anyone receiving the email should not download any attachments or click any links and report it to us by using our online fraud reporting tool.

Subject headers change frequently

You are likely to see some variations of this email, as it is easy for fraudsters to amend the details and continue targeting people. BCRC’s cyber security specialist said “the email is difficult to block as the subject headers change frequently.” He also said: “Provoking a panicked, impulse reaction has become a very common scam technique for cyber criminals. Opening the attachment allows the criminal to spy on the victim, use their computer to commit crime, or steal personal and financial information. Always be careful with suspicious emails, do not click on a hyperlink or a .exe file unless you are sure the sender is genuine. Each month Discovering Bourne will be showcasing stories written by talented young students from Bourne Academy. This month’s is the first of a two-part dramatic tale of a small boy’s battle with his bullies.

The Gift (part one)

and minds. ‘Peach Trees’ was a place of death and corruption; an isolated backwater estate beyond the reach of central London. Sad and lonely, it was shut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for itself as its tall, decrepit blocks towered against all; gangs and police alike.

he moonlight lit up the night sky, a bright beacon against the unyielding darkness, casting grotesque shapes in its wake. The clouds scattered as the night’s bright eye impressed its heavy radiance, driving away any sort of shadows that tried to fall on the sleeping world below. I lay there, staring at the brilliance. It was a gift; a gift that could never be taken away. Throughout my life, grief and sadness followed me as constant companions, raging a soundless war in my mind that left me crying out in slumber.

The street was empty when I reached the bus stop. I shuffled uncomfortably and waited to slip into the routine that would carry me off into a sense of boredom; school! Distant shouts floated on the wind, bringing the cold to slash against my face and bring sudden tears to my eyes. I shivered, ready to receive my morning judgement from my oppressors. Soon enough four figures advanced through the increasing wall of snow and sleet. My palms were beginning to become hot and sticky as all eyes turned towards me. The space between the crowd and me was receding as the youths drew nearer. I began to flush as people stared grinning at me, their malicious eyes about to soak up the torment and pain that would start and end in the same fashion every morning. The boys started towards me, satisfactory glances in my direction warned me that the next few seconds would be hurtful ones. Cold, callous hands gripped my neck and arms, while a heavy set brow and dangerous eyes pressed against my features making me recoil backwards.

‘Peach Trees’: the name would spring to mind of a summer evening as the sun is gradually enveloped by a crystal blue sea far off into the distance. However. ‘Peach Trees’ was never any of these things. Even growing up, where a child’s home is his sanctum and place of rest, I discovered that when I peered through the emotions of friends and family, their To be continued... outer soft emotions gave way to hooded, grim-faced strangers with dark hearts

The perfect match for sea-salty oysters

March can be an odd month for gastronomes; seasonal winter dishes can be past their prime but spring fare is not yet with us. Yes, some root veg and brassica can still be excellent but by March we are all desperately looking forward to longer days, early morning warmth and all the youth and freshness that the new season will bring.

here are a few notable exceptions to this state of affairs, not least being oysters, which are at their peak this month. Native oysters from Dorset and Cornwall offer a plumpness, a succulence and a sweetness not found in such plentiful abundance with the more distantly sourced Pacific oysters. Oysters are not everyone’s delight I know, but I do believe everyone can learn to love them! Purists believe nothing beats a raw oyster in its natural salty liquor, a squeeze of lemon juice and a splash of tabasco. I am certainly in this camp and a zesty, steely Chablis is a match made in heaven. Chablis is made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape and comes from a particular region to the North of Burgundy where the soils are formed of Kimmeridgian clay. This is a clay which contains limestone marl formed over ’ during the Jurassic age. 150 million years ago The limestone is comprised of an abundance of crushed tiny oyster shells and like so many things in nature, it is this unique occurrence which creates the perfect harmony between this particular food and wine. 2010 and 2012 were great vintages for Chablis

and both should be available in supermarkets. I really like Olivier Leflaive’s premier Cru, Fourchaume, Chablis 2010 which retails for around £20. Very good substitutes can be found in local supermarkets for around £12. If you simply can’t face slurping a raw oyster then a great alternative is to lightly grill them for four or five minutes in the shell with all the juice and a small knob of better. They tend to be poached and grilled this way which helps to retain the succulence and they can be finished off with a pinch of chopped parsley and a twist of black pepper. The perfect drink with grilled oysters is a London Porter, a dark, strong ale similar to Guinness and other stouts. The richness of Porter, combined with its sweetness and hint of caramel flavour just works so well. Marks and Spencer has the sublime, London Porter, at 2.29 per bottle. With these two options for oysters there is no excuse not to give them a try and with the recommended wine or beer match I am certain you will not be disappointed.

Recipe of the month Barry’s Chilli Con Carne (serves 4) Ingredients

Method

800g Diced Beef 200ml Hot Black Coffee 1 Large Dried Chilli ½ Teaspoon Ground Cumin ½ Teaspoon Smoked Paprika ¼ Teaspoon Dried Oregano 1 Bay Leaf 1 Red Onion Diced 2 Fresh Chillies 1 Stick Cinnamon 2 Cloves of Garlic, Finely Sliced 1 Tin of Chopped Tomatoes 1 Yellow Pepper 1 Tin of Kidney Beans 1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar Salt & Pepper

1 Soak your chilli in the coffee for a few minutes to let it rehydrate.

2 Meanwhile in a large casserole pot heat some olive

oil on low, add the Cumin, Paprika, Oregano, Bay Leaf,

Chillies, Garlic, Cinnamon stick and the diced Beef.

3 Now add the coffee, Tomatoes, Sugar and a pinch of Salt and Pepper.

4 Pop the lid and simmer for around two hours. 5 Then add the yellow pepper, Kidney beans and cook for 30mins with the lid off.

6 Serve with fluffy rice and some lemony green

My Special Mum

For our Mother’s Day issue, Editor Sally Hunt met three local mums whose lives have been far from ordinary …

Kate Harding is mum to two sons, Sam (16) and Harry (9). In 1996 her life was thrown into turmoil when her husband Carl was involved in a serious accident which left him paralysed from the chest down. Six months after the accident Kate gave birth to Sam and the family had a few challenging years while Carl readjusted to life without the use of his legs. Eventually they decided they would like to have another child and five years and six IVF treatments later were thrilled when a second son, Harry, was born. Unfortunately by the age of 8 weeks they realised that Harry was not developing as expected and took him to see a paediatrician who diagnosed Cerebral Palsy. He has Athetoid Cerebral palsy which means that he has constant involuntary movements which stop him from controlling any of his muscles. It affects his whole body and all the activities which are necessary for daily living. He is unable to sit, stand, talk, feed himself or carry out any self-care and he is reliant on a carer to help him with everything. Kate describes life with Harry as by no means easy. She said: “He gets very frustrated by his lack of physical ability and if people don’t understand him, this can lead to some difficult and sometimes violent behaviour. He doesn’t sleep well so we both end up very tired and grumpy! Life can sometimes feel like an endless round of feeding, changing, fighting, cajoling and negotiating. I can sometimes get to the end of the day feeling like I’ve run several marathons!” Kate and her friend Laura, who also has a child with special needs, have set up a support group called Dare to be Different – a place where parents and carers of children with a disability can get together informally for a drink and a chat to air any concerns, share information and laugh together. 16

world was blown apart when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, at just 39 years old. A single mum, her daughter Jessica was six at the time. The following months went by in a blur of MRI scans, biopsies, lymph node removal, chemotherapy and more and more tests. She remembers hours in waiting rooms, having an anaphylactic shock twice, the drugs and the

infections. She said: “Every time I had to go back into hospital Jess got upset but we were each other’s rocks and were strong for each other. We always

had friends and family on hand if needed, but most of the time we did it together at home.” Debbie, a dance teacher, had a mastectomy in May 2012, just days after raising over £1000 by taking part in the Race for Life, along with her daughter.

Finally, just before Christmas last year Debbie had her rebuild surgery and feels like she has reached the end of her cancer journey. She has to take Tamoxifen for another eight and half years but even though the side effects leave her exhausted it doesn’t compare to the gruelling cancer treatment she has endured. Jessie said: “My mummy is special because she has faced cancer and been brave through all the operations. She still made time to give me lots of love and hugs and kisses.” Debbie’s next challenge is completing the Moon Walk 2014, in London, in May. She is raising money for Walk the Walk, a charity which distributes money to campaigns and projects that are involved with breast cancer. Pat Hallam is mum to three daughters and has nine grandsons and one granddaughter, as well as a surrogate grandson who she looked after from a baby until the age of 12. When Pat had her twin daughters, back in 1970, it was a shock. She said: “There were no scans back then. I was curious throughout my pregnancy of the size of the ‘baby’ I was carrying! Life was a bit difficult with twins, there was no support and my eldest daughter was only 16 months! This is where I developed my skills in

making clothes as having two babies to clothe was an expensive business. This led me to become a very keen knitter. I am continually knitting, for everybody around me, no pattern will overcome me and I am known for adjusting and creating alternatives in order to complete a finished garment.” Pat’s daughter Mary Bishop said: “Mum is always helping everyone out, she never stops! She is a fantastic mum and grandma and we all love her very much”. Pat is known for her good work taking care of others. She regularly helps her neighbours making hot dinners and cups of tea, popping round to check they are ok, making sure they have what they need and supporting them with challenges they struggle to face by themselves. The law and …… living together? There are around six million couples in Britain who live together and are not married nor in a civil partnership. Many of these couples believe that they are protected by common law as if they were married. However common law marriage doesn’t exist in England and Wales. So how are you affected? Children When your child’s birth is registered, depending on who is present will affect who has Parental Responsibility. Without Parental Responsibility you don’t have rights to be involved in decisions such as where your child lives, their education, religion or medical treatment.

Wills and Inheriting If you die before you make a will, your partner won’t automatically inherit anything from you. It doesn’t matter how long you were together. Everything will go to your nearest blood relative. Without a Will, the only option for a surviving partner who feels they have not received reasonable financial provision is to make a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. Couples that live together could have to pay inheritance tax of 40% on all assets left above the personal threshold of £325,000 because unlike married couples or civil partners you cannot use each other’s inheritance tax allowance.

Housing If you rent a property together, you may both be tenants, which would mean if one of you decided to leave the property, the other is still liable for the whole rent. If the tenancy is only in one name, the other will have no automatic right to remain in the property if you part. If you own a property together you will need to decide how you are going to own the property, Tenants in common or Joint Tenants. Many couples enter into a Property Trust Deed to ensure they are fully protected.

raditionally, the sales market picks up in March, so once those daffs start to show, people get the itch to move. This year we have noticed that people are no longer prepared to wait until Easter, and are coming to the market early, in the hope of moving in the Spring time. Over the last few years, families have felt nervous about moving home, with worries about house prices and interest rates, but this year, we are getting the feeling that people have waited long enough for that extra bedroom or study space, so are taking the plunge and coming to the market. his doesn’t often happen in the literal sense, but some divorcing husbands and wives seem to have feelings strong enough to want to draw blood from each other, which family law solicitors have to try and manage during the course of a case. A retiring Judge, Sir Paul Coleridge, told a family law conference in London at the end of last year, that lawyers should take the lead in developing more innovative and daring alternatives to the “bloodshed, time and cost of court”. Sir Paul also called for an overhaul of outdated divorce law (unchanged for 40 years) which is not going to happen any time soon. What is available to improve the divorce experience however, is alternative dispute resolution such as mediation, which couples undertake as a more cost-effective way of negotiating arrangements in the presence of a third party (who is not a legal adviser) for the children and financial settlements. Microsoft Turn Their Back on XP Users

On April 8th 2014 Microsoft will remove the support for the XP operating system, thus leaving millions of users without adequate security protection for their older systems. In a fast moving industry it is inevitable that operating systems will come and go, but XP was still being sold in 2007 so this is at least three years early in my opinion as well as that of many in the IT industry. Here we will look at what this means to you and at options available to those with older systems still using Windows XP.

Since its launch in 2001, XP has been the biggest seller ever for a computer operating system. Over this time most of us will have become familiar with the interface and the frequent Windows Updates that are automatically loaded. These are essential for the continued efficient operation and security of the computer system. It is this service that is being removed. No further XP security patches or fixes will be released.

WILL MY XP SYSTEM BECOME UNUSABLE ON APRIL 8TH 2014?

No! Far from it. Your system will run as normal. The loss of the update process will not impact the running of the system in any way. What will happen will be that your system will become increasingly vulnerable to malicious attacks of malware, hackers and viruses, threatening your data security and privacy.

WHAT DO MICROSOFT RECOMMEND?

Microsoft recommends upgrading your operating system to Windows 7 or 8. The sad fact is that many of the older XP systems will not be capable of effectively running Windows 7 or 8 due to hardware restrictions. Microsoft’s somewhat cold hearted response to this is that you ‘should upgrade your hardware’. Or put another way, buy a new computer.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

There will be a lot of ‘panic’ press as we draw close to April 8th. Try not to get caught up in the hype. There is no pack of hounds at the door waiting to burst in on the 8th, despite what you may read in the press. However, as the months roll by the XP operating system will become more and more vulnerable and unstable. The quickest and most

effective way to avoid these complications and risks is to do as Microsoft suggest, upgrade your system to Windows 7 or 8 before the demise of XP. However, you can buy yourself some time by running a full featured Internet Security/AntiVirus suite, such as Norton, Kaspersky, ESet, Bitdefender, McAfee etc. All of the major providers have committed to support protection on XP until the end of 2014. If you do take this option you should still look to move onto a new operating system by the end of 2014 at the latest. It is a temporary fix only. Also note that the free versions of antivirus, most common being AVG, Avast and Security Essentials are NOT sufficient to protect your system beyond April 8th.

ARE THERE OTHER OPTIONS?

The short answer is yes. How appropriate these are for you will depend on your circumstance: Remove Windows XP and install a Linux operating system such as Ubuntu. Ubuntu is free as it is part of the open source library and provides a very good and professional alternative to Windows. Remove your XP system from the internet and only use it for ‘offline’ activity. Use a tablet system (Android/iPad) for your daily internet/email needs supplemented by your XP system running as a word processor/office document tool without an internet connection. I am more than happy to offer advice on a personal basis if you are unsure on how to proceed. No matter what you intend to do though; you MUST take action before 8th April to protect your system & data from malicious attack.

Grow with the times, urges local tax expert News that the UK’s economy is growing at the fastest rate since 2007 will help bolster business confidence, but small businesses in Bourne need to grow with the times, according to a local specialist.

Kitchens of the future Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m working with a client to increase the size of their kitchen to make a dining-kitchen. The motivation for doing this is to create a more flexible space that fits their lifestyle. It is a typical problem - everyone wants to be in the kitchen, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s often not enough room!

o how will kitchens change in the next few years? I predict the trend to move further away from having separate rooms for eating, relaxing and preparing food will continue and we will have larger multi-functional rooms that accommodate all of these activities. The kitchen really will be the hub of the home.

What will our kitchens look like?

Clever design solutions will include multi-purpose fitments so one piece of furniture serves several functions. Walk-in larders will be created from borrowed space found under the stairs or in porches and garages. Kitchen cupboards will be more individual and fitted units will not necessarily match. Tailor made top cupboards will reach the ceiling using every inch of space. Splashbacks will be more decorative and interesting. Open shelves will be for display as well as storage. 40

Laundry rooms will be located upstairs for convenience near the bedrooms as fewer people use outside lines to dry washing. As the kitchen becomes the central focus for family activity, games and pastimes will be enjoyed here. More people will work from home so desk/study spaces will be commonplace. Already advances in digital technology and home automation mean there are fewer chores to take up our time and this will continue apace. was so pleased to be invited to the Bourne Academy to hear all about the launch of such an exciting new project for our town. What I like about this is that the youngsters of the town will be involved in creating a BRM trail which will encourage more people to visit our historic market town. They will produce leaflets and a film to show in our delightful Baldocks Mill. Well done to those involved in securing £4000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and also thanks to the Len Pick Trust for £1000. This project will involve many people and I look forward to seeing the trail and film. We all so enjoyed the BRM Day in 2012 and so this is a very fitting follow up to celebrate the town’s important motor racing history. This town is steeped in history and I am often surprised that many local adults and children have never visited Baldocks Mill which celebrates this town’s past. There has been a mill on this site since Doomsday and the museum has three floors: one celebrating Raymond Mays and BRM, other exhibits include Charles Fredrick Worth another famous son of Bourne plus of course local history -the water industry and railway history. There is something for everyone. It is well worth a visit and is open

every weekend afternoon. What better way to spend a winter afternoon learning about your town and you may even be tempted to join the Bourne Civic Society. Each Mayor follows a tradition of being the Honorary Vice Chairman of the Civic Society so I look forward to chairing the AGM on Wednesday 19th March. The President is Baroness Willoughby de’Eresby who takes a keen interest in many local charities. The Mayoress and I are looking forward to supporting the local Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies in the Deeping Gang Show. I am sure that this will be a fun event with a lot of children showing how talented they are. Thanks has to go to so many adults willing to give of their time to encourage our youngsters in many activities run in Bourne and the surrounding villages.

BRM Trail for Bourne A whole town trail to commemorate BRM in Bourne is to be constructed thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The bid was put in by Bourne Academy, the BRM Association, the Len Pick Trust, the Civic Society, and Bourne Preservation Society. Community Business Development Coordinator at Bourne Academy, Isobel Copley, said: “We have been overwhelmed by public support for the project. In addition to the organisations mentioned, we have had support from local townspeople, former employees and visitors to the town. The idea is met with enthusiasm and offers of help. We plan to share the project with the young people of the town through involvement of the other town schools. The project is very much about bringing the BRM history in the town to the attention of all generations. We want to make the BRM history accessible for everybody. The project will commence in July 2014 with completion exactly a year later. Look out for regular updates, we will be ensuring this project is open to all and shared by all.

Foot and ankle osteoarthritis As you age your chance of developing osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear, increases. The joint damage associated with osteoarthritis causes swelling, pain and deformity. Here is information about how osteoarthritis affects the foot and ankle and information you can use to help you manage this debilitating condition.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a general term for a group of more than 100 diseases. The word “arthritis” means “joint inflammation”. Arthritis involves inflammation in and around the body’s joints and surrounding soft tissue. The inflammation can cause pain, stiffness and swelling of the joints. In many kinds of arthritis, progressive joint deterioration occurs and the smooth “cushioning” cartilage in joints is gradually lost. As a result the bones rub and wear against each other. Soft tissues in the joints also may begin to wear down. Arthritis can be painful and eventually result in limited motion, loss of joint function and deformities in the joints affected.

What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. Also known as degenerative joint disease or age-related arthritis, osteoarthritis is more likely to develop as people age. Osteoarthritis used to be considered as simply the wear and tear of joints , but increasingly scientists consider it an active disease that involves inflammation and other processes destroying the joint. Inflammation and injury to the joint cause a breaking down of cartilage tissues, resulting in pain, swelling and deformity. The changes in osteoarthritis usually occur slowly over many years, though there are occasional exceptions.

How does osteoarthritis affect the foot and ankle? Each foot has 28 bones and more than 30 joints. The following are the most common foot joints affected by osteoarthritis:

· The joint where the ankle and shinbone meet · The three joints of the foot that involve the heel bone, the inner mid-foot bone and the outer midfoot bon · The joint of the big toe and foot bone

What are the symptoms of foot and ankle osteoarthritis?

Symptoms of foot and ankle osteoarthritis often include the following: · Tenderness or pain · Reduced ability to move or walk · Stiffness in the joint · Swelling in the joint

How is foot and ankle osteoarthritis diagnosed?

The diagnosis of foot and ankle osteoarthritis will probably involve some of the following: · A medical history in which asks questions about when and where the pain began and a close examination of the foot · A test called a gait analysis in which your stride and the way you walk · X-rays · Bone scans

How is foot and ankle osteoarthritis treated?

Foot and ankle osteoarthritis can be treated in many ways. Non-surgical methods to treat foot and ankle arthritis include: · Steroid medications injected into the joints · Anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling in the joints · Painkillers · Pads or arch supports · Walking sticks or braces to support the joints · Inserts that support the ankle and foot · Physiotherapy · Nutritional supplements · Weight control

...Tudor Cinema

oving pictures came to Bourne in 1925 when film shows were staged at the Corn Exchange, a venture that was so successful that a permanent cinema for the town became a viable business proposition. As a result, the Tudor Cinema was opened in North Street in 1929, the design following the tradition for cinemas of the period, built in a flamboyant style, in this case mock Tudor with a distinctive A-shaped gable and a half-timbered frontage. The owners were Bourne Picturehouse Ltd and the auditorium had room for 588 patrons and an orchestra pit for the pianist who accompanied the silent films. The cinema opened on December 2nd when the first three nights were devoted to a screening of The Sea Beast, a 1925 adaptation of Herman Melville’s famous whaling novel Moby Dick, starring Lionel Barrymore and Dolores Costello. Admission prices were 1s., 9d., 1s. 3d., and 6d. in the pre-decimal days when £1 = 20 shillings or 240 pence. The cinema continued showing silent films with a piano accompaniment until the talkies arrived in 1931. Queues formed down North Street to experience the wonder of the age with The Jazz Singer, starring the American vocalist Al Jolson, made in 1927 and containing the first spoken words on screen. The Tudor continued in business throughout

the Second World War but in 1946 it was sold to the Star Group who re-quipped it and staged a grand re-opening with the film The Valley of Decision starring Greer Garson and Gregory Peck, playing for the first three days of the week followed by the Technicolor musical State Fair starring Jeanne Crain and Dana Andrews from Thursday until Saturday. Wide screen entertainment such as Cinemascope and Panavision started to attract filmgoers to nearby towns after it was introduced in 1953 and this signalled the death knell for those smaller cinemas that either had no room to install such facilities or could not afford them. Attendances at the Tudor declined and bingo was introduced in 1963 for three evenings a week and in 1972, films were phased out altogether. But the bingo craze was not to last and in the summer of 1989 the Tudor was put up for sale with a price tag of £165,000, re-opening in May 1991 as a Chinese restaurant, dishing up portions of chop suey and fried rice instead of a feast of Clark Gable and Jean Harlow.

Bourne Preservation Society By Jack Slater

Bourne Preservation Society is proud of Bourne, and we want everyone to be proud of Bourne, which is why we came together at the beginning of 2008, the start of an organisation that is working to secure the history of Bourne, and is working to keep its distinctiveness. Bourne has wonderful history, significant historic buildings, businesses, and world famous people, and Bourne Preservation Society is working to raise the profile of these wonderful assets our town can provide, for the benefit of the local population as well as increasing amounts of visitors to Bourne. We want to give people more reasons to visit the town. Bourne Preservation Society was initially formed to save the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cemetery chapel, but has evolved into something much bigger, even to the extent of forming a sister organisation, Bourne Preservation Trust, created as a Private Limited Company, and Registered Charity, operating as a buildings preservation trust, in order to handle buildings restoration work. Bourne Preservation Society has worked with SKDC on the revised Conservation Area, and produces annual condition reports to them, some of you may have received our Conservation Area Guide, distributed by SKDC with the new plan to those households and businesses affected. It is a

privilege to live in a Conservation Area, and there are many benefits to be gained, not least property values. We have recently taken over running the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s information boards on behalf of SKDC, and we will make them dynamic and useful to both local people and visitors to our town, look out for exciting new ideas on them soon, and send us information if you would like it to be displayed. We act on planning applications, observed problems, and planned changes, in addition to holding monthly member meetings, town walks, and other events. We have been working to secure a 99 year lease on the cemetery chapel for almost six years, and despite many obstacles, have a lease offer and still hope to restore and re-open the building. We also have exciting plans for the Old Grammar School, and are currently in talks with its owners to try and develop it also. Both are important local buildings, the chapel is believed to be the oldest listed in England of its unusual design. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to stop change, but we do want Bourne to appreciate, and retain its history, and to highlight what it has, by finding new uses for currently closed historic buildings. We are also pleased to be supporting the Bourne Academy, BRM Town Trail project. Members are the life blood of an organisation, and we thank all our members for supporting us, but new members are always welcome, so if you love Bourne, and you like what you read here, join us and help the Society grow, we would love to see you. We also need people prepared to be active in pursuit of these goals, if that is you, we want to hear from you.
