Bourne Discovering
T
his month I had the privilege to meet and chat to David ‘Jack’ Stubley, former personal mechanic to Grand Prix ace Nikki Lauda. David worked for BRM in the 60s and 70s and has lots of interesting tales to tell about the Grand Prix circuit at that time. Read my full interview with him on page …. I paid a visit to Time for Tea to chat with owners Andrew and Kevin about their successful café and clock shop. I was struck by how friendly the customers were and how much the shops were part of the community. Don’t be fooled by the ‘tea’ in the title. The café sells so much more than just tea! Time for Tea is celebrating ten years in business, along with Accountancy Consultants East. Caroline Glithero started with no clients in 2004 and built her business up to the thriving company it is today. Congratulations to both businesses. It was great to meet our MP Nick Boles when he came along and talked to members of the Bourne Business Club. It was interesting to listen to his views which contradicted with those of some of the members. But that’s politics – and Nick certainly gave some of us food for thought. Please support the cyclists who are cycling to Brussels to raise money for charity. I love a bike ride – but ten miles is about my limit so I can certainly appreciate how hard 400 miles in four days will be! And talking of sporting heroes, huge congratulations to local ski sensation Jade Etherington for winning four medals at the Winter Paralympics. On a final note, we were saddened to hear about the death of the female black swan and her eggs killed by a fox while nesting on the Well Head in Bourne. The male swan will be sent back to Norfolk to be looked after by lots of female swans!

|Your finances by Paul Ross, Landmark IFA LTD
Your questions Q. I am due to retire shortly and want to take benefits from my Personal Pension Plan. I know I can take 25% of my fund as a tax free cash sum, but what are my options for receiving an income from the balance? A: You have a number of options open to you. The most common way of taking a pension is via an annuity, however there are 4 other options such as investment backed annuities, enhanced annuities, fixed term annuities and income drawdown. Some of these phrases may sound a bit out of the ordinary, however what I would almost certainly recommend is before making a decision, seek financial advice – remember, my initial meeting will not be charged for. Doing it yourself, believe me, can be very costly for your future and you cannot unravel what you have done once the cancellation period ends.
Q: I have quite a few pension plans and this just confuses me. Would it be better to amalgamate them into one? A: Thank you, Mr T for this question. The answer to this question depends on a number of factors such as the types of pensions you have and because of this, I would need to a deep analysis, looking at the charges and funds your money is invested in. I do consolidate pensions for a lot of people but not all pensions are transferred as I would simply need to compare the pros and cons of each individual scheme you have
answered
Q: I am married with 2 small children. My wife and I are taking out our first mortgage. What type of insurances/ protection plans should we be considering? A: The answer to this question will depend partly on what cover you already have in place and what benefits you might be entitled to at work. However, if we assume that you have no existing cover or benefits, then you may wish to consider taking out either a decreasing term assurance or a level term assurance plan. In addition, you should consider protecting your payments with an accident, sickness and unemployment policy
If you have a question about finances, why don’t you email me (Paul Ross) on paul@landmarkgroup.org.uk or call me on 01778 440555 or 07786 224495. I will then answer this with no obligation and I will feature some of the questions within our monthly bulletin

It’s a SCAM - fraudsters want your pin and bank card Dear readers,
Over the last few months, there has been a significant rise in a scam called ‘Courier Fraud’ which has seen victims being defrauded of thousands of pounds. The courier fraud is a sophisticated scam where people are telephoned by fraudsters and duped into revealing their PIN and handing over their bank card to a courier. To carry this out, a fraudster rings you claiming to be a police officer or someone from your bank. You are then informed that your bank card has been cloned or used fraudulently. You may be asked to ring back dialing either 999 or using the phone number on the back of your card - which further convinces you the call is genuine. However, the criminal keeps the line open at their end so, when you make the call, you are unknowingly connected straight back to the fraudster. Then, by seeming to offer assistance, the fraudster tries to gain your trust. In most cases you are asked to ‘cancel’ your existing card or ‘activate’ or ‘authorise’ a replacement card by either reading out your PIN or by keying it into your phone’s handset. In some cases, victims have been asked to withdraw thousands so that the investigation can be progressed. The fraudster then tells you that a courier will pick up your card or cash from your home. In some cases a genuine courier company is hired to pick up the card, which the victim has been asked to place into an envelope. The Police were contacted recently by a local victim who reported that she was waiting at home with £5,000 for a courier to collect, and on 25th February an elderly gentleman fell victim to the scam and handed over £2000. Remember this advice: • Your bank or the police will NEVER ring you and tell you that they are coming to your home to pick up your card, so never hand it over to anyone who comes to collect it. • Your bank will NEVER ask you to authorise anything by revealing your PIN. • NEVER share your PIN with anyone – the only times you should use your PIN is at a cash machine or when you use a shop’s chip and PIN machine. Please pass this message to friends and family, particularly the elderly who are most vulnerable. If you should receive a call of this nature please report it to the Police by calling 101.

Chambolle-Musigny The perfect partner for roast lamb With Easter soon upon us, what better vinous way to celebrate than with the wines of Chambolle-Musigny, one of Burgundy’ most treasured and adored communes.
I
t is said that the roast lamb dinner that many eat on Easter Sunday goes back earlier than Easter to the first Passover of the Jewish people. The sacrificial lamb was roasted and eaten, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs in hopes that the angel of God would pass over their homes and bring no harm. The Chambolle-Musigny commune is situated in the Northern half of the Cote d’Or, above Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanee produces some of the most delicate wines of Burgundy: Delicate yes, but feeble, ’ no. Chambolle-Musigny’s wines are often described as being “feminine” and may be lighter in structure than those of say, Gevery-Chambertin, but they can be every bit as intense. Red Burgundy is made exclusively from the Pinot Noir grape variety and Chambolle-Musigny wines offer up a wonderful perfume and carry an inherent elegance. These are irresistible wines and I can’t help but be seduced by their silk and lace. Chambolle-Musigny has two Grand Cru vineyards within the commune; Bonnes-Mares and Musigny itself. These produce some of the finest wines in the world and have prices to match. However, there are 24 Premier Crus and plenty of “village” wines so it is more than possible to enjoy the wonderful breadth and voluptuousness of these wines without having to sell your shirt. There are a handful of wonderful growers in this commune including Georges de Vogue, Mugnier and Georges Roumier but wines from these producers tend to only be available on allocation to regular big spending customers of specialist wine merchants. I searched locally for wines from ChambolleMusigny and it has to be said, there aren’t many to be found. However, one very good example 10
DiscoveringBourne
is currently available from Marks & Spencer at £38.00. This is the Chambolle-Musigny Les Caves de la Colombe, from a co-operative on behalf of a number of smaller, local Chambolle growers. It is a village wine – this means it comes from grapes sourced from the whole commune rather than from a delimited vineyard but it is certainly none the worse for it humble origins. This wine comes from the 2009 vintage, which is quite exceptional in Burgundy and unusually, is very approachable even at this young age. M&S describe the wine as being “ succulent, scented and a supremely classy Chambolle-Musigny with beguiling flavours of winter spice and dark hedgerow fruits”. I would agree. Pinot Noir is an incredibly food-friendly wine and can pair well with both red and white meats. This means it is an excellent partner to suit any roast dinner over Easter but it is particularly well matched with the often subtle flavor of young spring lamb.
Leigh Johnson is a holder of the Advanced Certificate from the Wine & Spirits Educational Trust and is an avid wine collector and enthusiast. You can follow his wine thoughts on facebook by searching for Bells Farm Vintners. April 2014 | www.discoveringbourne.co.uk

THE GIRLS ARE BACK IN TOWN!
Café 35 has re-opened and owners Beth Smith, Nicola Owen, Maya Wilson, Milsom, Louise Wilcockson, and Marina Hawkins say it’s better than ever. And what better way to start the day than with a Café 35 breakfast ranging from a full English breakfast to Eggs Benedict or a Builder’s breakfast sandwich. The girls pride themselves on their home cooking, including home-made soups, cakes, pastries and pate. The menus change with the seasons and their produce is locally sourced, coming from local businesses such as Groovy Foods and the Pea Pod Pantry. Beth said: “We cater for dietary requirements such as Gluten Free, Dairy Free, vegetarian or vegan. We try and be as environmentally friendly as possible and use Fairtrade Coffee and Tea and free range eggs.” The café is open seven days a week and also caters for private functions. Clubs are welcome. Pop in to the café at North Street for further information or ring 07857 812683.
3 Heat the oil up on a heavy based pan (180-190°C)
or until a cube of bread browns in 30 seconds. Add the chips in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for 3-4 minutes until beginning to brown. Remove and drain on a plate which has been lined with kitchen paper.
4 Return oil to the heat and cook the chips again until golden and piping hot.

COULD YOU BE ADDICTED TO FOOD? Do you: • End up eating more than planned especially when you start eating certain foods? • Keep eating certain foods even if you're no longer hungry? • Eat to the point of feeling ill? • Worry about not eating certain types of foods or worry about cutting down on certain types of foods? • When certain foods aren't available, go out of your way to obtain them?
Do any of these situations apply to you? • You eat certain foods so often or in such large amounts that you start eating food instead of working, spending time with the family, or doing recreational activities. • You avoid professional or social situations where certain foods are available because of fear of overeating. • You have problems functioning effectively at your job because of food and eating. • You find yourself eating secretly or hiding evidence of your eating from friends/family. Have you answered YES to some or all of these questions? Don’t worry you’re not alone - the idea that a person can be addicted to food has recently started to get more support from the scientific community. Experiments in animals and humans show for some people, the same reward and pleasure centers of the brain which are triggered by addictive drugs like cocaine and heroin are also activated by food, especially highly palatable foods rich in:
* Sugar * Fat * Salt Like addictive drugs, highly palatable foods trigger feel-good brain chemicals such as dopamine. Consequently we can quickly feel the need to eat again and as a result, people keep eating, even when they're not hungry. The reward signals from highly palatable
14
foods may override other signals of fullness and satisfaction and the pleasure we derive from eating these foods is not only starting to be recognised as physically addictive but also psychologically addictive. Food is commonly used as a quick “pickme-up” and we often over-eat in order to change or manage difficult feelings. For example when we are tired, bored, lonely, sad, depressed, angry, scared, anxious, frustrated, stressed etc. People who are addicted to food will continue to eat despite negative consequences, such as weight gain or damaged health and, like people who are addicted to drugs or gambling, people who are addicted to food, just like any other addiction will have trouble stopping their behavior in the long term without skilled support and intervention. How many times have you started a diet only to give up a few weeks later and relapse into your old eating behaviours? At Why Weight we recognise that for many people food can be an addictive substance. We know being over-weight is not only about what we are eating, but also why we over-eat. Traditional Diets focus only on treating the symptoms of food addiction – they don’t address the cause of our problems and therefore are unlikely to be successful in the long-term. Why Weight launched at Aspire Spalding on Tuesday 25th February and are running weekly weight loss groups.

The REAL cost of buying a house For many people the start of spring means the beginning of the house-hunting season. have an independent, more detailed survey carried out. The level of survey you need depends a lot on the individual property you are buying.
Moving home is an exciting time but because it is not an everyday event it can be frightening and even cause stress and worry. Buyers often don’t realise that on top of the cost of the house itself, there are many other, one-off expenses involved which can soon add up, for example mortgage application fees, survey fees, Stamp Duty, search fees, land registry fees, legal costs, removal costs and if you are selling as well as buying, estate agents fees. If you are having a mortgage your lender will carry out a basic valuation, this will only ensure that the amount they are lending you is protected. It is strongly advised that you also

Searches are an important part of the process. There are a wide range of searches that can be carried out and they provide you with more information about the property you plan to purchase, for example whether the road serving the property is a publicly adopted highway, if there are any mineshafts in the immediate vicinity, whether the property is subject to any planning enforcement notices and any environmental issues which could adversely affect the property. The process from having your offer accepted to completion usually takes about 12 weeks. However this does depend on the chain. If the property you are purchasing is in a chain your own purchase will be affected if someone a few links down the chain has problems with their mortgage company, their searches reveal matters that require further investigation or they lose their buyer.

Diamond
Diamond is probably considered the luxury gemstone and as such have come to symbolise love and eternal togetherness. Diamond is the hardest known material known to man and is composed of compact carbon. Diamonds are graded in four ways, colour, clarity, carat weight and cut, known as the four ‘C’s. Diamonds can come in many colours but the best are of pure colour, as pure white or pure yellow. The rarest colour is red, with only a few examples world wide.

Borneo
the island of adventure
Borneo’s lush rainforests are home to some of the most varied wildlife on the planet, but none of them capture the imagination like those ‘wild men of Borneo’, the flame-haired orangutans. See them hang from their two-metre arms at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sandakan, swinging through the trees and enjoying feeding time. With fewer than 15,000 left in the wild, this is your chance to see these great apes in their natural habitat. Borneo’s rainforests are so packed with wildlife that over 400 new species have been discovered in the last 15 years or so, and as many as 1,000 kinds of insects can been found in just one tree. As well as those famous orangutans, there are proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards, crocodiles, Sumatran rhinos, pygmy elephants, and even a slug that fires `love darts’ to lure its mate. Home to some of the most exciting marine sites on the planet, Borneo’s clear warm waters are positively teeming with life. Grab your underwater camera and jump in to discover coral reefs, rare green turtles, blue-spotted rays, scorpion fish, bright blue starfish, sea fans, cuttlefish, and mantis shrimps. There are plenty of dive centres to get you started. The Batang Rejang River is your route into Borneo’s tribal heartland. Visit the longhouses of the ancient Iban tribe, largely untouched by the modern world. And tour the Mari Mari Cultural Village near Kota Kinabulu for a fascinating glimpse into traditional Bajau, Lundayeh, Murut, Rungus, and Dusun cultures, with dwellings, performances, and skills like bamboo cooking and blowpipe shooting. The highest peak in Southeast Asia, Mount Kinabulu looms 4,095 metres over the landscape. The views from the summit are sublime, especially at sunrise. The surrounding Kinabalu National Park is incredibly biologically diverse, with a thousand species of orchid, 600 types of fern, and 320 kinds of birdlife. Climb Mount Kinabalu, the highest point in South East Asia, and experience a sense of achievement combined with a beautiful sunrise. Cruise the Kinabatangan River in search of primates, birdlife

Bourne parents In April 2012, having lived in Bourne for just two months I met up with a group of like minded mums who I had met through Netmums website. To help us keep in touch and organise future meet ups I suggested we have a 'little' Facebook group and on 27th April 2012 I set up that group with just a handful of members. Almost two years on and that 'little' group is now a thriving forum for parents, carers and anyone involved with families in and around Bourne with over 1000 members and still growing on a daily basis. Bourne Parents has become the place for families to ask advice, seek recommendations for businesses and trades people, find out what is available for them and their children in our busy little town and to make new friends. We welcome anyone with a connection to Bourne or the surrounding villages who has anything to do with children of any age whether as a parent, carer, grandparent or in a professional capacity. The reputation of Bourne Parents has now grown to the point that it is the first point of call for many families with a question they would like answered whether it is 'what is there to do in Bourne with my toddler today?' or ‘can anyone recommend a plumber?' For many members Bourne Parents has been a lifeline in their arrival in a new town or at a new stage in their lives and it makes me very proud when I hear comments such as 'I wouldn't have met so many great people if I hadn't been told about BP when I first moved here' and 'The support from the other mums and dads on here is amazing'.

Needlecraft and lacemaking Fair
Do you practice a textile craft? If you do, the Makit 2014 LQ&N Fair is an event you should not miss. Packed with exhibitors, plus workshops and demonstrations, the fair boasts the largest collection of specialist suppliers for Lacemaking, Quilting, Beading, Tatting, Embroidery, Knitting, Gold work, Crochet and most other Needlecrafts assembled in one place providing you with the widest product selection a craftsperson could want. Makit lace is a specialist provider of threads, accessories and books to the Lacemaking, Quilting and Needlecraft communities nationally and internationally. As lacemakers, the company has developed a range of threads which is
possibly the widest in the UK. The company is organising the Makit LQ&N 2014 fair at the East of England Showground in Peterborough on May 11th to promote a mixture of crafts and make products available which are not often available on the High Street. Owner Steve Stephenson explains that there is a crossover in the needlework and quilting business and although threads are available on the High Street, the selection is relatively poor. Lacemakers tend to buy their products from specialist providers and will welcome the chance
22
to look at exhibits from over 50 national and regional suppliers, all under one roof. Makit Lace and Craft Supplies was formed in the nineties and combines owner Scilla Stephenson’s knowledge of fashion, design and lacemaking with husband Steve’s experience of textile production and conversion. Scilla is an avid lacemaker and they saw a gap in the market after she dragged Steve to a fair at the NEC to get some supplies. They took the opportunity to create a business supplying textile related craft markets and have established a strong relationship with their customers, many of whom have supported them since they started. The company organise two textile related craft supplies Fairs where specialist suppliers provide visitors with a wide product selection plus the opportunity to view product exhibitions, demonstrations and participate in craft “taster” sessions. The fair at the East of England Showground is at The Atrium, Peterborough Arena from 10am to 4.30pm. The entrance fee is £4 at the door, or £3 in advance, and there is free parking. The show will include a display of quilts from the Makit LQN 2014 Quilt Competition and a display of Modern Lace entitled ‘Big, Bold and Beautiful’ by Mrs Jacqui Barber. New Horizons Textile Group have an exhibit entitled ‘Now we are twenty’ to celebrate their 20th anniversary, illustrating the diversity of styles, techniques and talents of this award winning textile group. Visitors can also try their hand at tatting, patchwork and lacemaking, for free.

Celebrating 10 years in business Caroline Glithero, of Accountancy Consultants East Limited, is celebrating ten years in business. Starting from scratch with absolutely no clients she came to the Bourne area in January 2004. Traditionally January is the busiest time of year for accountants with year end tax returns, but Caroline said it was the only year that it was quiet, compared to all of the other subsequent manic Januarys! Caroline prides herself on her warm and friendly service and says it’s an interesting life being an Accountant. She says: “I do everything a general practice accountant would do and have clients that range from those who are just starting up a business, through well-established businesses, to those that are looking to sell the business when retiring. “A new client might want advice on how to get all those financial matters right, including record-keeping and informing HMRC about their business, completing VAT returns, Payrolls and so on.” Caroline, who is a Chartered Accountant, also explains that it’s worth using a professional qualified accountant, as there is more protection for clients and control over the quality of work if they are using someone who is a member of an association. She said: “A lot of people don’t realise that anyone can set up and practice as an ‘accountant’, but obviously a qualified accountant has a practicing certificate, insurance and has to do a certain amount of professional updating and training every year.” Caroline’s services include proactive advice and support to businesses, business planning,
bookkeeping, computerised accounting, management accounts, taxation, VAT and Company Secretarial. Most of Caroline’s customers are small limited companies, mostly working in service industries.
Accountancy Consultants East Limited is situated at 58 North Street, Bourne PE10 9AB. Telephone 01778 423777.

Local cyclists going the distance for charity A group of 25 cyclists are cycling 400 miles over four days and passing through five countries in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for Peterborough based charity The Free Kicks Foundation. The Charity cycle ride will head off from Peterborough United`s London Road ground at 9am on Tuesday 28th May and will travel 300 miles to Brussels, reaching the Grand Place on Friday 31st May. The riders plus support vehicles will head for Harwich, where they will get the overnight ferry to Holland, and over the next three days travel through France, Germany and Belgium. The group includes cyclist Darren Ingram from Langtoft and three riders from Bourne, Lee Townsend, Neil Guy and Nikki Burkitt, who is doing the ride in memory of her twin sister, Darren’s late wife Michelle Ingram, who passed away in a car accident on Kings Street in 2007. Darren said: “Following the success of last year’s ride where we managed to raise £16000 for the charity, we have decided to do it again. This year
however we have made it more difficult, covering 400 miles in four days and passing through five countries All of us are keen cyclists and have been training throughout the winter in some horrible weather to prepare for this tough ride. but we all feel it’s well worth the effort. “We have set ourselves a target of raising £20,000 this year for Free Kicks, a Peterborough based charity whose aim it is to provide football-related activities for ill, bereaved and disadvantaged children, to give them a day to remember with their favourite football club, where they can be a mascot for the day or get tickets to sit in an executive box, meet the players and receive souvenirs and mementos of their amazing day out.” To find out more about the journey and the riders please visit their page at posh2brussels.blogspot. co.uk where you can also make a donation.

MP Nick Boles speaks to the Bourne Business Chamber
Members of the Bourne Business Club enjoyed an interesting and informative talk by Stamford and Bourne’s MP Nick Boles at Wake House last month.
N
ick is a Junior Minister for Planning and Development and he explained to members how the planning system is becoming more streamlined in a bid to make it easier to convert something into something else. He was asked about the Bourne bypass and why it was only near the housing area at Elsea Park. He explained that budgets for new bypasses are as a result of associated developments and a North/West bypass is unlikely to be built any time soon. As it was a fairly small gathering, members of the BBC were able to have an animated discussion with Nick about other matters such as Scotland and Europe. Some questions were already prepared but he was quite relaxed about extra questions and gave members some insightful answers.
frustrating for drivers to queue at the crossing - sometimes for half an hour or more in my experience - but I share Lincolnshire County Council’s view that this is not a priority for their stretched highways budget, after all you could build a new secondary school for £15 million, therefore I do not think that the construction of a bridge over the railway at Tallington would represent good value for taxpayers’ money.” However Nick is fully behind efforts to secure a pedestrian crossing over the A15 at Thurlby. Local residents have waged a campaign to get a crossing installed after two young girls were seriously injured crossing the road after school.
Locally, he talked about the campaign to get a crossing over the railway at Tallington. He said it would cost £15 million or more and Lincolnshire County Council is unable to make a significant contribution to the project. He said: “I know it is

Each month Discovering Bourne will be showcasing stories written by talented young students from Bourne Academy. This month’s is the second of a two-part dramatic tale of a small boy’s battle with his bullies.
The Gift (part two)
By Oliver Cook aged 14
“Y
ou alright, mug?” Kieran spoke quietly, his eyes intently staring at the pain that flashed across my body and revealed itself on my face. The bus stop drifted into one singular point of Kieran and me, the crowd grew eerily silent, snow outside lashed against the windows and brought the cold in and the warmth out. “I have been better,” I choked through a constricted throat; the cold embrace of his fingers was steadily denying my need for oxygen. A savage look appeared in his eyes, but his face was as smooth as still water and gave a hint of feeling. However, he plunged his fist into my stomach that left me gagging and retching. He spat his disgust and turned to the bus that had arrived a few moments earlier. Gasping, I rose to my feet; fear and embarrassment began to tug at my eyes. I stepped on to the bus, paid the fare and hid myself away as a tear gently rolled down my cheek. I trudged forward in the abysmal silence, ready to go home and ponder on the events of the past day and somehow find it in my heart to see the good in events that would make the hardiest man stare at the ground in solace and despair. Kieran came off the bus holding my wallet. “Hey mate? You need this?” He shouted, and from this distance, I could see his grin steadily creeping from ear to ear. I reached him with a grimace on my face and heart. With all my anger, I swung at him with all the pain and hurt he caused me. A fight ensued for a few moments
that felt like a lifetime, but it stopped when cold steel bit skin. I stumbled away from the bus stop, pain clawing at my side, gnawing away any hope of escape. I turned a corner, my hand groping at my stomach to stem the blood as it flooded through my fingers. With every step, my strength faded. My body was chilled by the thoughts that entered my mind, “I’m dying.” The moon played on the clouds above as I made my way through the narrow street, the buildings on either side seemed to close in and left me feeling dizzy and nauseous, “I’m dying.” I broke through the mental barrier that barred my path and stumbled towards the street lamp on the opposite side of the road. “I’m dying.” I reached the post and slumped against it. I had no strength of my own to bear the weight of my frail body. I turned my head limply towards the sky and slipped gradually onto my back. There were no cars on this road, no houses, just emptiness. The silence was deafening and soon an aura of peace and tranquillity ebbed over my body as I stared at the moon above.

Bourne Academy’s
got talent!
T
he stage is set, the star curtain glimmers and the smoke machine is primed. It is that time of year again where the cream of the talent rises to the surface as the best two acts from each of the six houses at Bourne Academy perform their art for the judges attention. This year, our judges were James DeSilva (local musician, composer, musical directer and vocal coach), Helen Powell (recent Mayor of Bourne and Expressive Arts link governor here at BA) and Rebecca Beavis (music co-ordinator at Bourne Westfield). It was a tough task to pick a first, second and third place from a range of excellent talent where the level of the performances continue to get better and better year upon year. The night itself was pure perfection and professionalism from the live TV studio camera with live link to a full intelligent lighting show operated by students as part of their Performing Arts course. Hairs stood up on the back of necks when eventual winner Will Silver sang his version of ‘You Give Me Something’ by James Morrison. The lead singer of ‘Arco Miner’ (a band formed through the new BTEC Music course at KS4 led by Head of Music and virtuoso guitarist Mr Aaron Beeken) was on his own on this occasion and singing to a professional backing track, as students in this category had to perform within their colour houses. Keller House (Yellow) were victorious on this occasion then. In the second act the new feature was a special ‘Battle Round’ where students were able to collaborate within the realms of a Dance-off, Drum-off, Gym-off and Sing-off. The overall winners of which were Mays
House (Green) as the Battle Round was well attended and the Dance-off expertly choreographed by Lauren Willis(Yr11).

|Technology Corner by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC
Stop Unwanted downloads with UnChecky When I visit clients for problems with their systems, the most common issue I see is that their PCs are littered with software and tools that they simply had no knowledge of requesting. A lot of these are loaded by ‘riding’ on downloads or updates of other software and will often have cunningly placed tick boxes that need to be removed to prevent these unwanted applications being installed. Sadly, this practice of automatically ticking ‘accept’ boxes is prevalent throughout the IT world. Here I show you a tool called Unchecky that will attempt to remove the automatic ticks for you hence reducing your system clutter.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Nothing. It’s a free tool produced by engineers who, like me, are opposed to these automatic tick boxes.
HOW DO I GET IT?
You need to download it and install it from http:// unchecky.com/ Click the download button and install the application on your system. During this process you may see a box warning you that the file may damage your computer. Don’t worry, this is because the download is a .exe (executable) file. It is perfectly safe to run it to complete the installation. Click on Actions, followed by More Options then Run Anyway.
HOW DO I USE IT?
There is very little for you to do as once it is installed it is automated. Following installation you will see an Unchecky icon on the desktop. Double click this icon and it will confirm the current status of Unchecky. If it is installed correctly you will see the green tick and from now on, when you download software and updates, any automated tick boxes will have their ticks removed.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO DO?
Unchecky takes a big step towards helping you keep your system free of unrequested software. It will sniff out any automatic request that it can find and remove the automated tick. It is not foolproof
32
however. You should still read pop up boxes and information carefully and only used recognised download sites when obtaining software, especially free versions.
WHAT IS A SAFE DOWNLOAD SITE?
Spammers and scammers love free software as they know that they can easily target people looking to download free tools and applications. As such they often mimic these download links and ‘piggy back’ malware onto downloads. The way to avoid this is to use recognised download centres. For your tablet and/or smartphone this is easy, just use the Apple Store, Amazon Store, Google Play Store etc;. However it is not so clear for a PC. The following sites provide good sources of free programs and will be virus free. www.download.com (CNET downloads), www. filehippo.com and www.sourceforge.net

|An interview with:
David Stubley Niki Lauda’s former mechanic at BRM Words by Sally Hunt
David ‘Jack’ Stubley is enjoying semi-retirement and living a quiet life in his bungalow at Elsea Park which he shares with wife Tricia. A far cry from the noise, excitement and drama of his years on the Grand Prix circuit when he worked as a mechanic for Bourne-based BRM.
D
avid has found himself in the limelight after the release of the film Rush which depicts the rivalry between English racing car driver James Hunt and Austrian driver Niki Lauda. David worked as Niki’s personal mechanic during the 1973 season before Niki left BRM and joined Ferrari. He said: “Niki was nothing like he appears in the film. He was a really nice little chap. Never argued, never swore or lost his temper. All the other drivers were doing the same as he and he respected that they were all in the same boat.

Photo Credit: BRM Association Archive “In those days all the teams were friendly with each other and would pop into each other’s pits for a natter. The mechanics all knew each other as we often swopped parts. Frank Williams was scraping through dustbins to get bits for his cars, now his team has Won 9 F1 Constructors World Championship’s “Niki and I would sit for hours talking about what he wanted doing to it and why he wanted it done. If a car had come back I would talk him through the car front to back, what modifications there were, what new parts were on it. I worked

“The mosquitos were eating us and it was pouring with rain. Someone brought us a crate of yoghurts!” on Niki’s car on my own with nobody else helping me.” (In 1973 BRM ran three cars throughout the season, the other cars were assigned two mechanics). During his time on the circuit David met lots of famous people. He remembers meeting Elizabeth Taylor, Steve McQueen and The Beatles. One of his memories of Ringo Starr is him asking for (and getting) beans on toast when he was staying in the Hotel De Paris in Monaco! His favourite circuit was the original Kyalami in South Africa, which was no longer used as a Grand Prix circuit after 1985. It was never really a glamorous job. He had to leave his wife and child for weeks at a time and can remember conditions that would never be allowed today. He said: “I remember a time at the Ontario Motor Speedway when the works team had new rear engine back plates and they cracked. We didn’t see a hotel for three days. Nowadays if a team works over 12 hours they get fined. “Another time in Sao Paolo we worked all night and nothing to eat. The mosquitos were eating us though and it was pouring with rain. Someone brought us a crate of yoghurts!” Niki was superstitious and always insisted that David was the last person to shake his hand and talk to him before a race. He said: “If someone else touched the car he would call me back and repeat the handshake. He would give me his watch and ring and then I would give it back to him after the race.” Despite the hours and the tragedies, David loved his job and particularly remembers Niki’s acts of kindness. He said: “He gave me some little horses from Sweden for my daughter. He was a nice bloke. We had cigarette sponsors back then and if he was given 200 cigarettes he’d say, share them out.” To find out more about the BRM Association visit their website www.brmassociation.org Note: On his visits to Bourne Niki Lauda always stayed in the Angel Hotel and would ensure his visit included a Thursday as he was fascinated by and enjoyed wandering around the Street Market. After leaving BRM he went on to win 3 F1 World Drivers Championships (2 with Ferrari and 1 with McLaren) and is now the Chairman of the Mercedes F1 Team.

Learn to drive in just five days with Big Tom Driving School from £599 Intensive driving courses are an effective and thorough way to learn to drive and are guaranteed to get results. Former learners have given glowing praise to Bourne based Big Tom Driving School after they passed their test first time – less than two weeks after they started driving. The course was designed with busy, professional people in mind, and over 25’s can get a discount of up to a £100 – simply fill in the form on the website and find out what you could save. Big Tom has three standard packages. A 40 hours beginner’s package which costs £1200 which includes free resources for theory test study, free pre-course video resource, plus free training for any fail. Secondly there is a 30 hour Top-up to Test package costing £899 and the five day intensive course costing £599.
The amount of in-car driving hours varies for each course and as such does the duration of the course. Typically they vary from between 5 days and 12 days (there is flexibility built in to accommodate the schedule/diary of the customer). Owner Tom Ingram said: “I offer customers the freedom to choose where they want to go to test (Bourne residents live right in between Peterborough and Grantham Test Centres). Some of my Spalding customers choose to go to test in Boston. Secondly, I also have a comprehensive pre-course driving video reference library to help people prep for the course in the comfort of their own home and also reinforce in-car learning when ON the course. “There are no hidden costs, no classrooms and simulators – these are specially designed courses to accelerate the learning process by allowing you the freedom to learn by driving, not talking, so that you can pass the driving test after just 1 week of training.”
Take a look at the testimonials on the website www.bigtom.org.uk and BIGTOM.org.uk on facebook.

How to use texture to liven up your lounge
I
was hosting a ‘Talking Interiors’ meeting and we mentioned texture in terms of decorating schemes. I could see people frown and realised not everyone understood what I meant. There was a carved wood panel on the wall, about an inch thick, and the dark nutty brown colour made a good contrast against the white wall. I asked everyone to imagine that the panel was painted the same colour as the wall so there was no longer the contrast and the panel itself visually blended into the wall…. the wall then becomes textured I explained, there is a 3D effect. If you think about fabrics, a velvet is more textured than a silk because you feel the raised threads or nap; a knitted wool blanket will be more textured than a piece of felt… I think you are getting the idea! Textures can be hard or soft, warm to the touch or cold, rough or smooth, shiny or matt and their use is an essential component in design. Kelly Hoppen fans will know how she includes texture in her neutral schemes so that they

never look bland but instead appear exciting and sophisticated. Combine different textures for extra impact:• a rough piece of driftwood with smooth curved glass • luxurious velvet with abrasive concrete an ornate gold leaf photo frame with a lace tablecloth • manmade fabrics such as plastic and vinyl evoke the 60s and 70s • manufactured materials such as steel and copper create an urban or industrial theme • wicker baskets filled with flowers or fruit are suggestive of country style • bevelled glass and intricately worked silver are in keeping with a traditional home
Appreciate the value of texture - give it some thought when planning your next project and take a look at my blog for more ideas: www.yasminchopin.com

E L Z Z U P Corner This month’s Sudoku is based on the Lincolnshire village of Pickworth. The village has a lovely early medieval church dedicated to St Andrew which was rebuilt and extended just a few years before the onset of the Black Death in 1348. The Manor House at Pickworth dates to 1530. To complete the Sudoku fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the name Pickworth.
Good luck...

A word from your mayor David Higgs |kk Another interesting month for me. The Mayoress and I were invited to the Gang Show at Deeping . This was a splendid night out and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The show was very professionally presented with some wonderful singing , acting and dancing. We were amazed at the number of costume changes: so much work had gone into producing such a great show. Well done to all those who took part to make this a great evening. Later in the month we were invited to Shippon Barn to witness the presentation of cheques to a number of local charities by the scouts. The money had been raised by bag packing in a local supermarket . It was good to see youngsters prepared to give something back to their community. Well done! As Mayor I am automatically the Vice Chairman of the Civic Society and have the honour of Chairing their Annual General Meeting which is held in
Baldocks Mill. What a delightful place that is. It is easy to spend an hour or so wandering round looking at exhibitions relevant to Bourne. If you haven't visited I would recommend you do so. Watch out for a First World War Exhibition to be held there later in the year. The Mill also celebrates two of Bourne's famous people Charles Worth and Raymond Mays. On the note of famous people I could not write this letter without mentioning with pride Jade Etherington who was brought up in Bourne and, at the winter Paralympics in Sochi, won three silver medals and one bronze medal. She is the most successful female British Winter Paralympian of all time. Well done Jade - Bourne is very very proud of you. Don't the daffodils look wonderful by the Bourne Eau? We are so fortunate to have such a pleasant green area in the middle of Bourne and thanks must go to the United Charities for looking after that. And of course, we are privileged to have Bourne Woods on our doorstep. Bourne is a beautiful place to live and I am proud of the town and of the people who work tirelessly to keep it a very special place. Hope to be meeting some more of you in April. Have a very blessed Easter.

Discovering...
...Great Flood of 1910
F
by Rex Needle
looding is one of the major natural disasters of the modern world that can dramatically change our lives and the low lying areas of eastern England that we know as the fens have had their share of misfortune. Bourne was particularly hard hit because this was a farming community and in times of inundation, the land became unworkable and unproductive and so farm labourers were invariably sent home without wages until conditions improved. The worst cases of flooding in the Bourne area have all been caused by fenland waterways bursting their banks during periods of heavy rain and in November 1880, some 3,000 acres of land were submerged to the depth of up to seven feet with corn stacks, buildings and houses surrounded by one vast expanse of water. Looting was rife and cash rewards were offered for the apprehension of the culprits. Thirty years later, the River Glen burst its banks at Tongue End, inundating the South Fen near Bourne and covering the main Spalding road towards Twenty with flood water. This disaster during December that year became known as the Great Flood of 1910 and for more than a month, the entire fen was under water. Emergency repairs continued day and night as attempts were made to repair the damage with workers filling the breached bank with sandbags but despite
54
labouring for long hours, they had little success and farmers were forced to wait until the water subsided naturally although it was many weeks before it drained away. Landowners refunded tenants part of their annual rent and collections to help stricken farmers were made in local churches while events such as concerts and whist drives were arranged to raise more cash aid. A public meeting was held at the Corn Exchange in January 1911 to assess the damage and set up a distress fund for those affected but compensation claims from the tenants of 1,500 acres of land totalled many thousands of pounds. Relief work continued for several months but it was to be more than a year before the land returned to its usual productivity and many of the smaller farmers never recovered from the financial loss they had suffered. There has been further serious flooding around Bourne in recent years but nothing to equal the disaster of 1910, mainly because of improved fenland drainage, but as recent events elsewhere in England have proved, the weather remains dangerously unpredictable.

Hereward Probus Club
One of the founder members of the modern PROBUS club is reputed to be the late Mr Harold Blanchard, a member of the Rotary Club of Caterham. In 1965 he retired from business and, prompted by his wife’s suggestion that there should be a special club for retired professional and businessmen, he put the idea to his Rotary Club Council. All Rotarians were asked to bring possible members to the meeting, which was to be chaired by the current President of the Rotary Club, Ken Parry. This meeting was held in February 1966 and forty-two possible members turned up, generating considerable enthusiasm. It was agreed to hold a monthly meeting and it was suggested that the Rotary Club President take the Chair at the first three luncheons so that members of the new club could get to know each other before electing their own officers and drawing up simple rules. At the fourth luncheon, it was decided that the club should be run by a small committee and it was felt that members would prefer to keep things simple, having suffered from too many rules during their working lives. A committee was appointed with the Chairman of the Rotary Club Vocational Service Committee as Chairman. Suggestions were invited for the name of the club. One member proposed the word PROBUS, it being derived from the two words PROfessional and BUSiness. It is also a Latin word (meaning good, excellent or upright) from which our word ‘probity’ is indirectly derived. The name was adopted with enthusiasm.
Today there are thousands of Probus Clubs scattered around the country and in many other parts of the world. There is however, no central governing body. Each Club is autonomous and decides its own structure and programme of activities. Fellowship and cordiality in pleasant surroundings are the recognizable features of Probus. Hereward Probus (Bourne) holds Luncheon meetings at the Toft Country House Hotel, on the second Wednesday in each month. At present we have a speaker on alternate months. These talks cover a wide range of interesting topics and are given both by outside speakers and our own members. On the Monday prior to our Lunch meeting there is a coffee morning to which member’s wives and partners and member’s widows come along. The Club organises occasional holidays and outings to which our Ladies and other guests are invited. An annual feature of our activities is the special lunches held in the spring (Spring Lunch) and autumn (President’s Ladies’ Lunch). Our Welfare Officer and his assistants keep a watching brief for members and widows who may be ill or in need of assistance in some other way.
HOW DO I JOIN?
Our Constitution states that membership is open to Professional and Businessmen aged 60 and over, who are fully or partially retired. Application for membership should be submitted, in writing, to the Club Secretary for consideration by the Club’s Committee. The Application Form must provide the applicant’s full name, age and former occupation/s. The form must be signed by two existing members acting as Proposer and Seconder of the application. If accepted by the Committee, those present put the application to the membership at the next Lunch meeting for approval, or otherwise. We welcome applications from those who are moving into the area and who may have been a member of another Probus Club where they used to live. FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO APPLY TO JOIN, PLEASE CONTACT: Hereward Probus Club Rob Denton (Secretary) 68 The Pollards, Bourne, PE10 0QB Telephone: 01778 425276 E-mail: denton.robert@gamil.com
