elcome to our June Issue and what a busy time we have had preparing this bumper issue for you! Firstly, I would like to introduce some new members of our team. Our new Editor is John Schwarz, whose recent retirement from his teaching career has not only enabled his Border Collie to become the most exercised dog in Bourne, but has given John the chance to help correct my minor errors and add a few features of his own. I hope you enjoy his sense of humour! Jilly Lunn is our new lady in Sales and Hilary Bloomer joins us as Events Co-ordinator. Bourne has a new Mayor, Bob Russell, and I had the great pleasure of meeting him on May 13th when he was presented with his chain of office. I would like to wish him every success in his new role and you can read his first article inside. |Property news 1990 – The year in which the first internet web page was written, the year when English and French tunnelling engineers shook hands beneath the English Channel, and the year when husband and wife, Rex and Angela Eckford, established their independent estate agency in Bourne, having already spent fifteen years with a rival firm in the town.

WHO IS KNOCKING ON MY DOOR? Dear readers,

does it worry you when a stranger comes to your door? A national Trading Standards Institute survey involving feedback from 9,000 randomly selected households showed that nationally 96% of people simply did not want doorstep cold callers, and none of those surveyed actually welcomed them. ‘Cold calling’ is when someone calls at your home without a prior invitation. It is normally carried out by traders or sales people trying to sell a product or service. Other organisations which cold call on the doorstep include charities, religious groups and political parties at election time. Cold calling is not illegal. Some people are happy to receive such callers; however, some find cold calling to be annoying, unacceptable and an invasion of their privacy. In addition, cold calling is also a known method used by rogue traders, bogus workmen, high-pressure sales people, and bogus officials whose aim is to con householders out of their hard earned money. There is a proven link between instances of cold calling and instances of burglary, particularly distraction burglary. A seemingly innocent doorstep caller may actually be checking things out for a return visit at a later date to carry out a burglary or they may be distracting the householder, while an accomplice enters their premises to steal. No one should feel ashamed if they become a victim. Research shows that older people are particularly vulnerable, especially those living alone. The number of serious doorstep crime incidents reported to both the police and trading standards services has grown significantly over the past few years. Incidents involving older people losing thousands of pounds are now not unusual, but even a crime costing its victim just a few pounds can have a profound effect on that person’s life and health because they feel that the security and safety of their home has been invaded.

What you can do?

Keep an eye open for suspicious activity in your neighbourhood. If you do see obvious cold callers in your street, you can choose not to answer the door if they call. If you feel that they may be suspicious, please report it by calling 101 so that the police can come out and check their details. In an emergency, where you believe that there is a risk to public safety or an actual fraud is taking place, please dial 999.

ED’S EXCITING ECUADOR ADVENTURE Meet fifteen year old Ed Schwarz, a Bourne Grammar School student who is set to undertake the challenge of a lifetime. For a month in the summer of 2015, Ed will be part of a group travelling to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, off the South American coast. He will be busy taking part in a range of local community and charity projects, such as helping to build new facilities, teaching young children and participating in wildlife support. As part of the challenge, the fundraising, in excess of £4,000, is put into the hands of the students and, to that end, Ed has been launching himself into it with enthusiasm. He has distributed over 300 fliers to businesses and also to homes in his Mill Drove neighbourhood. He is offering his services in return for contributions to help finance the trip and these include grass cutting, fence painting, babysitting, dog walking and car washing. If you think you, or someone you know, might be able to offer Ed any assistance, however small, to help finance this fantastic opportunity, then please contact him on 01778 426094.

Time for improvements to Wellhead play area? A group of Bourne parents are calling on the local community to sign a petition to improve out of date equipment and uneven flooring at the Wellhead play area. The petition runs until 13th June 2014 and already has over 600 signatures, but 2500 signatures are needed if the petition is to be presented to the South Kesteven District Council scrutiny committee. You can lend your support by signing the petition at local businesses including Warners, Rollaway, Harpers Leisure Centre, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Tesco Extra, Wake House, Markey’s, Quentin Marks, Café 35, Select & Save, The End and Fovia or look out for the petition team at the Bourne Festival, 30th – 31st May. 16

Bourne2Play, the community group organising the petition, is also fundraising to make the Wellhead play area a facility the whole community can enjoy. Anna Rogers, chairperson for Bourne2Play, said: “The Wellhead is a beautiful park, but the play area lets it down. We can only go so far modernising the park with council money, we need local businesses and individuals to get behind us to make the Wellhead play area really great again.” Bourne2Play are working in partnership with the SKDC, Bourne Town Council and Bourne United Charities and are now looking at initial designs for the park.

Little Bees

Opening on Monday 2nd June, Little Bees is an independent group for new, expectant and existing parents, carers and guardians. Run in partnership with Busy Bees Nursery at their premises in Manor Lane, Bourne, the aim of Little Bees is to follow in the footsteps of its highly successful predecessor, Bambinos, in providing a support network for local families and fun activities, arts and crafts and free play for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their carers. All of this is in a fantastic family friendly environment, where breast and bottle feeding are welcome. Run by a team of local parent volunteers, we understand that things can sometimes get a bit tough and people don’t always know where to turn to for help. At Little Bees we offer and signpost support, we are (a few) pairs of (non-judgemental) ears to talk to, and we are simply somewhere to come along and meet new friends over a cuppa and a cake, while your children play, on a Monday or Friday morning between 10am and 12.30pm. Throughout the year, Little Bees will be hosting a range of guest speakers and demonstrations on subjects relevant to our members, such as weaning, reusable nappies, baby slings, baby massage and yoga. London to Paris Nine intrepid men and women from Bourne have seized the gauntlet and cycled the 320 mile from London to Paris May 2 - 6. The nine aged between 16 and 60 (ish) have been raising money for Lincs/Notts Air ambulance and have so far raised over £2000. It took four gruelling days cycling 80 miles a day. All had been in serious training for months. The most hardy braving the fierce winds and rains of winter to clock up the training miles. Luckily the weather was kind to them on the actual event. They cycled the official Avenue Verte route in glorious sunshine with no wind. All survived intact with only a few minor injuries and they are now avidly planning the next adventure. Recipe of the month Spicy BBQ Leg of Lamb - with minty lemon yoghurt for dipping

To prepare

1 Preheat your oven to 200ºC & light your BBQ 2 Slice the lemon grass sticks in half lengthways

and bash them in a large pestle and mortar with the ginger, garlic and lime leaves. Add the cumin and the lemon zest and juice and rub it all over the lamb with salt & pepper to taste.

3 sticks lemon grass; 5 cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and chopped; 5 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped; 6 lime leaves; 1 pinch ground cumin; zest and juice of 1 lemon; sea salt & freshly ground black pepper to taste; 1 quality leg of lamb, boned and butterflied; a few sprigs fresh mint, leaves picked and finely; chopped; fat-free natural yoghurt; 1 lemon.

3 Place the lamb in a roasting tray and cover

tightly with a double layer of kitchen foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes then take the lamb out of the roasting tray and drop it on the preheated BBQ. Move it around the grill to stop it burning. After 10-15 minutes you’ll have a lovely smoky, crispy surface on the meat.

4 Let the lamb rest for 15 minutes before slicing. 5 Add your chopped mint to the yoghurt with a

good squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir well and serve alongside the lamb in a dipping pot

(arm-rests too high will mean your shoulders will tend to hunch upwards and if set too low, the tendency is to slouch which will ruin that all important posture).

Tip 3 – Organise your desk:

Many day to day aches & pains can be attributed to an ill-fitting ‘workstation’. We spend more hours than ever before behind various screens and yet we rarely take time to adjust our work surroundings. We wouldn’t start driving a car without first adjusting the seat and mirrors so why don’t we take the same approach when we sit at our desk?

Tip 1 - Get ready for the day:

Take a moment to think about your work posture and workstation layout. It will take less than a minute – which is nothing compared to the hours you’ll spend sat there. Use a post-it note to remind yourself each day.

Tip 2 – Check your posture:

• Does the chair’s lumbar support fit the curve of your back? If not, consider an additional ‘clip in’ lumbar support or try a rolled up towel placed into the small of your back. These can really prevent you slouching. • Adjust your chair and screen height so that the top of your screen is level with your eyes. • Make sure your feet can be placed flat on the floor. If not, get a footrest. • If your chair has arms, adjust their height so

• COMPUTER SCREEN - Should be directly in front with no need to twist your body or neck to look at it. • KEYBOARD - Should be directly in front of you and far enough away to allow most of your forearms onto the desk too. MOUSE - Should be in easy reach. Keep frequently used items nearby to avoid repetitive overreaching. • TELEPHONE - Should be positioned on the same side as your dominant hand to avoid over reaching. If you use a handset regularly, consider a hands-free kit and never clutch the phone between your ear and shoulder!

Tip 4 – Give yourself a screen break!

Try and drag yourself away from the screen for at least 5 minutes each hour. Find an activity (Photocopying / filing) that gets you onto your feet and moving about.

Tip 5 – Motion

If you can’t get out-and-about, then try simple stretches whilst sat at your desk. Stretching is a low impact method of exercise which increases blood flow, flexibility, tone and your general performance – it will increase both physical and mental productivity and reduce those desk related aches and pains.

Joint hypermobility Joint hypermobility means some or all of a person’s joints have an unusually large range of movement. People with hypermobility are particularly supple and able to move their limbs into positions others find impossible. Many people with hypermobile joints do not have any problems or need treatment. However, joint hypermobility can sometimes cause unpleasant symptoms, such as joint and muscles pain. It can be quite unpleasant.

Living with joint hypermobility Joint hypermobility can be very difficult to live with because it can cause fatigue (extreme tiredness) and long-term pain. It may also take time to receive the correct diagnosis due to the wide range of symptoms that joint hypermobility can cause. However, once diagnosed, joint hypermobility can be treated. Causes of joint hypermobility Joint hypermobility is often hereditary (runs in families). One of the main causes of joint hypermobility is thought to be genetically-determined changes to a type of protein called collagen. This can make ligaments and joints particularly loose and stretchy. As a result, the joints can extend further than usual.

How common is joint hypermobility? It is not clear how many people in the UK have joint hypermobility. There are estimates that up to 3 in 10 people may be affected to some degree. It affects women more than men, possibly because female hormones increase flexibility. Joint hypermobility is common in children. Children with joint hypermobility can bend into unusual positions (often referred to as ‘double-jointed’). I see many people every year with unusual aches and pain in both joints and muscles, which with proper advice and treatment can be eased.

You may already know that this year, Father’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday June 15th. It’s always the third Sunday in the month, ever since the idea was introduced in the USA in 1910. In the UK, we’d long acknowledged Mothering Sunday as the fourth Sunday in Lent, (March 30th this year), so it was only fair that Dads should get their treats as well. But how many of you are aware of the huge number of celebration days there are in June besides Father’s Day? Read on and see just how quirky we humans can be and how it doesn’t take us too much to be in a celebratory mood and get those corks popping!

June 1st - National Dare Day. The time when you can challenge anyone to make a dare, be it a personal thing liking asking her/him out on a date, a challenge for them to achieve something special or just make a fool of themselves.

June 4th - Hug Your Cat Day. If you’re a cat lover, this is why you have your feline friend in the first place, but today’s the day to make more of a fuss than usual.

June 21st - The Summer Solstice. The longest day of the year so make the most of it now before the nights start pulling in – downhill to winter!

So I made some enquiries! I found Hayley and Freya. They work in a very different way and totally understood where I was coming from. I’ve learnt how my thoughts affect my feelings and I’m learning to handle my thinking differently, which is actually the key to managing my weight. Unlike other diets I’ve tried and failed in the past, I never felt deprived or even really hungry; in fact, I couldn’t believe how much food I needed to eat and how simple it was to follow. The crucial part of the programme is the weekly meetings with all the other lovely ladies who are a superb support. “Why Weight” has changed my life completely for the better. My confidence is coming back and it’s a super feeling walking into shops, picking up clothes and knowing they will fit! If anybody out there is reading this and feels that they have had enough of being overweight, then my hand is on my heart when I say, “Come and try it - you won’t look back.” Put yourself first - this is something I’m learning to do and I feel much healthier and happier in life”.

An interview with Police Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley Rick Mosley is a Police Sergeant based in Bourne. He has served as a Police Officer for 14 years, having spent the first 11 years in Lincoln in a variety of roles from Response Officer, a Community Beat Manager for the West End of Lincoln, (including the University of Lincoln), a Crime Investigator within CID to Acting Sergeant, before moving down to Bourne where he now lives with his partner Melissa, two year old daughter Evie and Cocker Spaniel, Blue. Q. Why did you want to become a Police Officer? I remember as a small boy sitting in a police car and, like most young boys, loved the idea of being a Police Officer. Having been in the Royal Air Force and really enjoying working in a disciplined, uniformed organisation, it was a natural transition to move to Lincolnshire Police. I like the fact that I really can make a difference to people’s lives by dealing with any incident I am confronted with, from anti-social behaviour to serious crime investigations.

Q. Can you outline the scope of your role?

My role is incredibly varied, dealing with a whole manner of situations and incidents, ranging from the very exciting, almost frightening, to the necessary paperwork that goes with each incident with which we have to deal. As a Sergeant on Community Patrol, I lead a team of Police Officers and Special Constables working a variety of shifts from days to full nights. When a call comes in for a police response, we are, in nearly all cases, the first to attend, dealing with the initial response before handing over to any specialist unit, depending on the nature of the incident. Quite simply, no two days are the same, which is what I love about the role.

Q. What did you have to do to be promoted to Sergeant?

Promotion in the police is a lengthy, thorough process. From Constable to Sergeant, the first step is to take a three hour multi-choice exam on law covering four policing areas, namely roads policing, evidence and procedure, general police duties and crime. Following that, there is a second exam which is set around role play, as a Supervisor dealing with different situations. The next stage is a written application for the role of Sergeant. If successful, the applicant is invited to give a presentation on a subject that is given to them on arrival and for which you have only 30 minutes to prepare. Following this, there is an interview, testing knowledge and understanding, which lasts about an hour.

Q. How do you relax after a day at work?

I really enjoy spending quality time with my daughter, who seems to be growing up so quickly. I also love cooking, walking the dog and running. I recently ran the “Langtoft 10k.” and am looking forward to running in more 10k. races and may even move up to half marathons!

Q. What initiatives have you brought to Lincolnshire Police?

I do consider myself to be very innovative and constantly look for new ways of dealing with problems. I was the first officer in Lincolnshire Police to use Facebook to communicate with, and reach out to, the students at the University of Lincoln. Now, all policing teams within Lincolnshire use Facebook and, even nationally, it is commonplace to now use social media as a policing tool. I also introduced the use of “Immobilise” in Lincolnshire, which is a free property database to which the members of the public may wish to sign. Once you have set up your profile, you can register all your valuable property on the database. If it is lost or stolen, then the loser can notify “Immobilise” which will update a property search engine called the NMPR, which all law enforcement agencies can access. Any item police come across in their duty can be searched for on the NMPR and, if listed as lost or stolen, can be reunited with their rightful owner. knew it would be the last time I saw him. My deep brown eyes filled with fear. Beams of sunlight broke through the smothering clouds that fell delicately on his face, defining his features that made me warm to him even more. I desperately tried to tell him, “I had to get away, I didn’t fit in here.” Holding my hand with unimaginable force like magnets clinging to each other, I gave a reassuring smile and broke the bond. My knees weakened as I hauled my rucksack over my shoulder. As I walked away I could feel the strain on my heart. Each step seemed to whisper through me, me, causing my eyes to dart pushing emptiness within me. uncontrollably. My eyes fixated on a flicker of fire that ran up the trees The late night air was still while rapidly. Fear ignited my body. the stars radiated incandescently, shining like diamonds encrusted Billows of smoke engulfed me; onto silk almost perfectly. I bathed stabbing my lungs with each in the hazy moonlight, feeling it breath of poisonous fumes. My eyes slide seamlessly across my body. strained searching for a gateway All my senses were wide awake. I of light, hoping to be the end of this contemplated whether to go back living hell. School holidays

Many parents struggle to afford a family holiday, given the price increases imposed by the travel companies during school holidays and, for some families, it has been the “norm” to take their children out of school during term time to go on such holidays. New legislation came into force in September 2013, removing references to holidays during term time . The legislation now says that a leave of absence during term time will only be granted where an application is made in advance, to the school, and the school consider that the leave of absence should be granted, due to exceptional circumstances relating to that application. Certain absences will normally be approved without any problems, for example attending a family funeral, hospital or medical appointments. Each request should be judged on a case by case basis by the Head Teacher, but if the parents are claiming that a holiday abroad can only be afforded in term time or holidays have always been taken at a specific time of year, then these requests are unlikely to amount to an “exceptional circumstance” and it is likely your request will be refused. If your request has been refused, but you still take your child out of school, each parent will be liable to a £60 penalty notice for each child at school. The fine rises to £120 if not paid within seven days. Those who refuse to pay can face court action and, if prosecuted, a large fine and even a possible jail sentence may be imposed. Many parents believe that a week’s holiday will not affect their child’s learning and family time is so much more essential in the current working world. However, by taking your child out of school for one week per year , during their school life they could have missed, in

total, more than three months of teaching! Children who miss a significant period of time in school miss out on important teaching and learning which can seriously jeopardise a child’s progress and attainment.

Make your bedroom a luxurious sanctuary Image: House of Fraser

any of us yearn to feel pampered and special and in the privacy of your own bedroom you can make it happen in a very personal way. Here are three tips I’m going to share with you to achieve jaw dropping luxury for your bedroom. These ideas will help you develop your interior design scheme and take it up a level:-

Soft textures: Deep buttoned headboards,

quilted bed throws, upholstered chairs and ottomans all add a sense of luxury. The softness is organised, not totally informal, and this is what makes the difference between a luxe feel and a relaxed feel. So if you’d like to add a throw, or a pair of fluffy cushions, place them carefully rather than just anyhow.

Glitter and shine: Mirrors, chandeliers, metallics and all reflective materials make the space feel glamorous and give it a touch of ‘Hollywood’. We are forever trying to bring more light into our rooms and mirrors are used freely, but be careful as too many hard surfaces can make a room feel unfriendly. Include fabric that has a sheen or a wallpaper with a metallic background - both give you shine without harshness. You can also add a romantic effect with artificial light by placing a mirror behind it; this works particularly well with wall lights and pendent lamps that hang close to a wall.

Generosity of scale: Wide picture frames, full fringes, large furniture, big patterns and lots of fabric in your drapes suggest opulence. If you can double the amount of anything do it! So, for instance, a single picture would be set with a minimum of two mount boards and a large fluted moulding for a frame. When thinking about the presentation of pictures or photographs, hang a group of smaller ones together to make a large display. Budget constraints often mean that the bedroom slips down the priority list so I hope I’ve encouraged you to spend a little time to create your sanctuary. You don’t necessarily need to spend lots of money to produce sumptuous richness, it’s more about making clever choices. Bourne in Bloom 2014

Bourne has been entering the East Midlands in Bloom Competition since 2006 and judging for this year is taking place on Tuesday 8 July at 2.30pm.

W Bourne has been extremely successful with achieving awards such as ‘Silver Gilt’ for the town in general since 2008, but with marks improving steadily. On top of the general award we have also gained ‘The Least Littered Environment’ in the East Midlands’ in 2009, special awards for the Allotments, The Willoughby School and many other areas. The committee has been working on further improvements to the environment and has managed to secure sponsorship for 5 large planters to be placed adjacent to the 4 main roads leading into Bourne and one for the archway of the Town Hall for the 2014 season. These planters are being sponsored by Warners Midlands plc, Bourne Prepared Produce (part of Bakkavor), Larkfleet Group and Delaine Buses. A further scheme is being investigated at the moment. If successful in gaining support, this 50

scheme would provide more colour in the town centre. A number of individuals and organisations continue to do litter picking in and around the outskirts of the town. Bourne Town Council is able to lend litter picking equipment to individuals and groups that are interested in helping to keep the area clean or tidy up an identified grotspot. Although many councils no longer support funding for schemes such as this, Bourne Town Council felt that certain aspects of the town had improved notably since entering this competition and that the budget of £1,200 designated to this cause was money well spent. ...Bourne’s first department store

epartment stores in England date from the 18th century although the first did not come to Bourne until 1860 when it was opened on a site overlooking the Queen’s Bridge in Eastgate by John Branston and selling a wide range of goods including household linen, curtains and fabrics, boots and shoes, men and women’s clothing, candles and groceries. It was an immediate success even though the population at that time was less than 4,000. Over the next 40 years, it became the biggest store in Bourne and when his son, Thomas Elmore Branston, took over, he built new shop premises with a grand opening in 1909 and a stone plaque on the front recorded the date together with his initials TEB while the name Branston was picked out in mosaic in the front doorway. Thomas sold out in 1913 to George Bett, a man with wide experience of the retail trade who expanded the business even further and within a year he was selling everything except uncooked meat, fresh fish and alcoholic drinks which he refused to stock because of his commitment to teetotalism. A trade advertisement from 1930 said that “the shop by the riverside sells almost everything at rock bottom prices” and there were also plenty of customers because by this time the population had risen to almost 5,000.

His motto was: “Come in and walk round. You are not pressed to buy” while all larger purchases were delivered free by their own vans, distance no object. In fact, stock was so varied that the store soon gained a reputation as an Aladdin’s cave filled with most things anyone would need. George Bett ran the business for 33 years, becoming one of the town’s leading citizens, and when he retired in 1946 the store was sold to Messrs L and H Hayhurst who remained there until it closed in 1970 when it became a showroom for the furniture retail business known as Kinnsway but that shop closed in 1985 when they moved to South Street. The Eastgate property became an antiques shop but in June 2008 planning permission was granted to turn the premises into a private house and it remains a spacious and stylish building, the biggest retail outlet in the town until the supermarkets arrived, while the present owner has retained many of the original features as a reminder of Bourne’s first department store.

I am Councillor Bob Russell and, on Tuesday 13th May, I was privileged to be appointed as the Mayor of Bourne. I took over the reins from Councillor David Hicks, who did sterling work in the post over the past year.

To give you just a little of my background, I am a Scot, who started work in the “risk protection field” with a UK national company in Glasgow. Further stints followed, in Bradford, Hanley, Manchester and the City of London. On taking early retirement, I needed something challenging to keep my brain active, but wished also to give something back to the community, so, when we moved to Bourne to be close to my expanding family, I was quickly drawn into local council work as a District

Councillor, then as a Town Councillor.

I am looking forward to representing Bourne during the coming year. I know I won’t get everything right, but you can be sure I will do my best at all times. It is customary for Mayors to raise money for charities during their term and my chosen charities will be, nationally, Cancer Research and, locally, a fund to support Bourne Youth.

Add a traditional Start Button to Windows 8 There are a number of applications that bring the old START button functionality back to Windows 8, my favourite by far is the free to use Classic Shell. To be fair Microsoft have made a token effort in Windows 8.1 to provide a form of Start button, but it is very basic and requires right clicking on it to do anything useful (a fact which many people are unaware). If you want to work with a familiar traditional style Windows interface, then Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d thoroughly recommend installing Classic Shell. To download Classic Shell go to www.classicshell.net and click on the Download Now button. After downloading, click run to install and Classic Shell will load.

Configuring Classic Shell

On first run you will be prompted to configure your settings. You can select XP style Classic, or 2 column or opt for the more recent Windows 7 style. Similarly you can choose whether to show a Start Button (recommended) and what icon to use. In Basic Settings you can choose other options related control. One setting that I always make is to set the Windows Key to open the Windows 8 Metro Start screen. There are also two settings that are set automatically but worth checking. These are the last two on the settings list. The first is to automatically load Classic Shell for the current user and the second is to force the system to skip the Windows 8 Metro screen and jump straight to the Desktop on boot.

This means that you can easily drop back to the new Windows 8 Metro app interface at any point with a single key press. After all, the Windows 8 Metro screen is awkward for mouse/keyboard users but it does have many positives too. Finally, by clicking on Skin you can select the visual aspects of Classic Shell and the Windows 8 desktop If you are not prompted to make these settings on first use, or if you want to change them, you can do so by right clicking on the Classic Shell icon and clicking on Settings. Once installed Classic Shell will remove a lot of the frustration of learning the new Windows 8 interface. It is so effective and reliable that I now load it on every Windows 8 that I sell and/ or configure for my clients. As you can see from the image below, the Start button will now have a familiar look and feel (example shown is the Classic 2 column view). The Start Button allows users to quickly come to terms with their new system and to be able to learn the intricacies of Windows 8 at their own pace should they so wish. I hope this helps alleviate the frustrations of using Windows 8 and/or Windows 8.1 for you or your friends.

Farewell “Residence and Contact” Orders! O n 22nd April 2014, the most important reforms in family law for a generation according to Lord Justice Munby, President of the Family Division, came into force. By virtue of the new Children and Families Act 2014 the terms “residence” and “contact” disappear, to be replaced by “a child arrangement order”. At first sight this looks like very good news because the old terms (a lot of people still use custody and access of course) can be emotive and divisive. But on closer inspection, when you come to defining what the child arrangements are, there will still be reference to where the child shall live as well the contact the child shall have with the other parent. There is scope for using more neutral terminology such as “the child shall spend time with the father…” in place of the much abused term “contact”, but the changes are not as far-reaching as family lawyers had hoped for. There is also a new Practice Direction requiring applicants to children cases to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting

Your questions answered Q: I have heard that mortgage lenders are going to be stricter about lending – would you be able to give me details about this? MMR is now officially in place and this means a number of changes for Lenders. Stricter lending criteria will also mean that the process of obtaining a mortgage will prove to be more difficult for some borrowers. In the past, some lenders (such as Northern Rock), offered 130% mortgages, which was a ridiculous situation in the end , and there are still several people in a negative equity situation because of this. The Mortgage Market Review (MMR) is a comprehensive review of the mortgage market, which started with a Discussion Paper in 2009 and culminated into a Policy Statement and final rules in October 2012. It is designed to ensure that the property and mortgage crisis of 2007 would not happen again. The MMR package of reforms is aimed at ensuring the continued access to mortgages for the great majority of customers who can afford it, while preventing a return to the poor practices that we saw in the past. Mortgage lenders’ watchword is now “AFFORDABILITY” and the MMR gives them the excuse and power to delve in detail into customers’ personal and financial circumstances and whether they can afford a mortgage. Holidays, pets, children, childcare, lifestyle, gambling, wine consumption are all going to

come under close scrutiny. With immediate effect, the majority of borrowers must receive advice from qualified mortgage advisers based on their affordability. This means that even when your existing mortgage deal comes to an end you will now need to obtain the appropriate mortgage advice (even if you decide to stay with your current lender). We would therefore recommend that anyone whose mortgage deal is due to end within the next 2-3 months starts the process early.

Born to be electric T oday heralds a new era of premium car ownership with the launch of the all-new BMW i3. This revolutionary car offers zero emissions in a premium car package, yet at an affordable price. The BMW i3 is the world’s first premium car designed from the ground up to be powered by an electric drive system. The result is a vehicle that embodies BMW’s commitment to driving pleasure without compromise. The electric motor generates an output of 170hp, with peak torque of 250Nm on demand instantly. This allows the BMW i3 to sprint from zero to 37mph in a mere 3.7 seconds and zero to 62mph in just 7.2 seconds, while the lithium-ion battery gives a range of 80–100 miles in everyday driving. This rises by approximately 15 per cent in ECO PRO mode and by the same again in ECO PRO+ mode. The range extender increases the car’s maximum range in day-to-day

driving to around 180 miles on one tank of fuel. Both BMW i3 models include a three-year, unlimited mileage vehicle warranty and an eight-year, 100,000 mile battery warranty. The battery is also included in the price of the car negating a separate lease charge for battery, as is the case for other electric vehicles. The manufacturing procedure and lifespan of the BMW i3 has been carefully considered, with sustainability at the forefront of thinking. Regenerative energy is used at all four BMW i plants across the globe, with 50 per cent less water consumed and 70 per cent less energy than in a conventional automotive facility. The carbon fibre required is produced at the BMW SGL Moses Lake plant in Washington State, which is completely powered by hydro-generated electricity. Construction of the CFRP architecture at Landshut, general assembly at Leipzig and recycling at Wackersdorf (all in Germany) are all powered by 100 per cent wind turbine energy.

Year 6 children at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy were delighted to hear the results of this year’s Bourne Rotary’s Writing and Art competition with two pupils achieving success. Peter Reid received first prize for his writing and went on to represent the District on 17th May in Market Harborough, where he received a certificate of participation coming 8th overall from over 1,000 entries in the junior section of the competition. Peter wrote a very moving story based on his great grandfather who served as one of the desert rates on the African front line in World War II. Cora Downing was awarded second prize for her lovely art work in the style of L.S. Lowry. Peter and Cora were presented with their prizes at a ceremony at Morton Village Hall. Later the same week we were contacted regarding three further poetry prizes, and were delighted to learn that Bourne Westfield had swept the board with three amazing poetry entries. 1st prize went to Chantelle Kelly with second and third prizes going to Rebecca Fielding and Lucy Cowell respectively. The children received their prizes in a special assembly. Head of Year 6, Gillian Goodwin, commented: “It was lovely to see the children celebrate their success – they have worked extremely hard and their finished work reflected this.”

Baston in the Blitz “Forties Re-enacting” is a leisure activity that is rapidly growing in popularity around the UK, and the village of Baston is hosting its very first Forties event, “Baston in the Blitz”, on Sunday, 7th September 2014. There will be a terrific line-up of vocal talent, in the form of Lola Lamour, Paul Casper and Ian 'Rosie' Rose, along with demonstration dancing by the Blitz Dancers and Charlie and Jayné. The event will be officially opened by Peter Austwick, portraying the legendary Winston Churchill. The main military re-enactor group is the 379th Bomb Group, with an interesting and varied display of US Army vehicles, weapons and equipment. Additionally, there will be individual re-enactors, authentically dressed in period civilian costumes and uniforms, including The Land Army, The Home Guard and The Civil Defence. A variety of vintage military and civilian vehicles will also be proudly on display. Other attractions include a radio tent, where children can learn Morse Code, a Dambusters display and a 1940’s hairstylist who can create an instant period look for the ladies. As a memento of the day, a photographer will take, print and mount your picture, literally while you wait. Trade stalls will be selling vintage clothing, craft items, second hand books, brica-brac and health & beauty products. There will be a strong Army Cadet presence from the local detachments of Bourne and Market Deeping, who will be putting on a variety of displays and activities. To help make the event a family-friendly day out, a funfair, pony rides, the Lions Bus and a secure picnic and children's play area, complete with bouncy castle, will be provided. To top it all, an excellent variety of catering, including a fully licensed bar, all with generous seating areas, will be yours to savour. Don't let inclement weather deter you as there is ample undercover seating, to enjoy the entertainment in comfort. The low admission price of £5 per adult (free for under16s and a concession for seniors) is intended to make the event very affordable for families.
