“S

ummertime and the livin’ is easy Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high”, and so begins George Gershwin’s 1935, classic aria for his opera, “Porgy and Bess”. Thirty- five years later and Mungo Jerry are at Number 1 in the charts, with their singalong, “We’re always happy Life’s for livin’ yeah, that’s our philosophy”. Yes, summer is here at last, holidays are on the horizon, and I hope that you’re all finding “livin’ easy” and agreeing that indeed, “life’s for livin’”. As far as our own (not so) little market town is concerned, this last month has seen so many people putting in enormous efforts to enable some summertime “livin’” to occur in the town. The Bourne Festival, for instance, proved its usual mixture of fun and more fun, with no small measure of mud this year, but as ever, raising thousands of pounds from the smiling public for good causes – fantastic efforts all round! The International Food Festival and Street Market will soon be upon us and is promising to be a roaring success. Similarly, the ninth annual Classic Car and Bike Show on the Wellhead is expecting its traditional huge turnout, this year to drool over a showcase display of Ford Mustangs, amongst the hundreds of other gleaming beauties. This month’s magazine will put you in the know as to what July has in store locally, and much more besides: The “Club Spotlight” shines on Bourne Cricket Club, eagerly anticipating their Annual Cricket Week and the Hodgkinson Cup 6-a-side run feast. More genteel, perhaps, would be a family visit to the John Clare Festival at Helpston, in this the 150th anniversary year of the great poet’s death. Read about (and why not sponsor?) four ambitious chaps, planning to cycle the length of the country to raise funds for Bourne’s Willoughby School. There’s so much happening in the magazine this month - with competitions, business profiles and features on emerging companies, valuable advice on holidaying with small children, home improvements, crime awareness gems with “Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”, an extension to the popular “Why weight?” weight loss challenge, historical insights into the Bourne of yesteryear and much, much more. How to make a large room feel comfortable

There are many ways to make a large space more comfortable and one is to install a room divider. The clever use of a physical barrier can set the tone for the design scheme; traditional, mid-century modern, urban, Scandi-style or shabby chic … anything is possible. Very large rooms can make people feel uncomfortable and sometimes it’s difficult to arrange furniture due to the lack of walls. It feels a bit weird placing furniture in the middle of an expansive room when, having been used to smaller spaces, we would naturally place large items around the edges of a room and face them inwards. Moving from a house with several small rooms into one with an open plan arrangement can be daunting and space dividers have an important role to play. In order to decide what type of room divider you need, consider the following questions:• Is it going to be permanent or do you need to move it around? For instance, will you want to take it with you to a new home or use it in another room

in the future? • Do you require the screen for privacy and if so, must it be completely solid or can it be semitransparent? • Should the screen be more than just a visual divider? Could it be a thermal or noise barrier? • Is the screen required for safety reasons? • Has the screen the potential to provide storage or become a place for you to display books or pieces of art? Bourne in Bloom Over the last few weeks the Len Pick Trust has become actively involved with Bourne in Bloom to help improve the environment; this is having a very positive effect on the town centre. The Town Council’s hanging baskets which are being offered to traders at £5 have been heavily subsidised by the Len Pick Trust. The shrub bed outside the former public toilets on South Street is receiving a huge face lift with the whole site being tidied up; again thanks to the Len Pick Trust and some volunteers. Volunteers cleared the site completely to provide a blank canvas for Debbie Cooke from Kirkby Underwood, owner of ‘Creative Garden Design’ (www.creativegardendesign.co.uk). Debbie Cooke and her colleague Sarah Horne were awarded a Silver Medal with their garden in the Great Pavilion at this year’s Chelsea Flower show. Len Pick Trust has teamed up with Debbie Cooke and the Bourne in Bloom committee to create something special for Bourne. The design is visually attractive and will be low maintenance but also catering for pockets of annual floral displays allowing for variations in each year’s display. The owner of the site, South Kesteven District Council, fully supports the project. Driving in or out of Bourne you may have noticed the new large planters at the 4 entrances of the town – these have been sponsored by Carlsberg UK, Bourne Prepare Produce, Larkfleet Group, Warners Midlands plc and the one under the Town Hall by Delaine Buses.

The Bourne in Bloom committee is very grateful for the support by all of the above and would like to thank them for their help and sponsorship for all of these Bourne in Bloom initiatives. Bourne man, Simon Allen, whose son has autism and attends the town’s highly regarded Willoughby School, is being joined by friends Adam Riddington, Wayne Reedman and Steve George in their challenge over two weeks in early September. All four share an avid desire to enable the school’s special facilities to be much further enhanced by their own, muscle-pumping efforts. Willoughby School caters for pupils from 2 to 19 years of age with a wide variety of additional needs, and the cyclists’ monumental efforts will be directed towards raising money for a new portable, sensory projector, along with wheelchairaccessible swings and roundabouts. THE SSAFA As we near the commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War in early August, I would like to give some indication of the part played by the “SSFA” as it was then known, (Soldiers & Sailors Family Association - of course, the RAF had not yet been established). It was the only services charity involved in helping servicemen and their families at that time and, by 1914, SSAFA was already a well-respected organisation. When

He tries to persuade his long-time partner to be his wife just for the evening. When she storms out, he turns in desperation to his secretary and his cleaning lady. That is how his ‘char’, Edna Chapman, becomes the first Mrs Jim Watt. The ensuing mayhem made for a high-speed, hilarious and thoroughly entertaining evening. Congratulations to the cast of six for their professionalism and mastery of comic timing – Ian Gibbs as Jim Watt; Karen MacQuarrie as partner, Helen; Katherine Marsden as secretary, Terri; John Megson and Frances Bridgewater, both with polished American accents, as Mr & Mrs McGregor and to Merryn Woodland as obliging Edna. She served up a stand-out tour de force as dowdy gossip turned ‘punk’, while her final appearance took the breath away. The stylish and sturdy set by Paul Atkinson and Stuart Lock survived the chaos remarkably well. Congratulations to director, Maureen Berkes, and her loyal team of helpers front of house and backstage for another excellent Footlights production.

New Year, New Challenges for Isis

Since being diagnosed with Stage 2 Mouth Cancer in early January, I have had to undergo radical face and neck surgery, aggressive radiotherapy and am now embarking on a program of physiotherapy and learning to eat, drink and speak again. During the last 5 months of sheer hell where I’ve had to withdraw from the business completely, I’m thrilled to say Isis has continued to flourish and grow and I now see so many new customers it’s hard to recognise some of the doggies when I’m updating our Facebook pages. It has been extremely hard for what I can only describe as being one of the most dedicated and hardworking teams anyone could wish for, as they’ve had to pick up where I would normally have been and continue to manage an even busier business which within our newly opened Doggy Daycare Centre, now offers in-house Grooming 5 days a week and In-house Puppy

Classes/Socialisation with Jill. I needed so much support from friends and family to keep my spirits up and I received such wonderful words of support from our lovely clients too. Some of which have gone so far as to run the Race for Life, with and without their pooches for me; organized, supported and attended a fundraising evening to help highlight awareness for this awful (and relatively uncommon) form of cancer and to raise much needed funds for them and the British Red Cross Macmillan team of ladies who have been a real rock during my recovery. The fundraiser evening saw the Nags Head donate the use of The Loft for the evening with fish & chips for everyone who attended which housed over 50 guests on Friday 13th June. There were donated prizes for the auctions some reaching £200 and others even causing a bidding war to win a desired painting! It was an emotional event, not only as I couldn’t eat the fish & chips but also because we rose over £1000 on the night through the collection tins, raffle, tickets and auction – the final total is still unknown, but also because it gave me a chance to thank everyone personally who has helped me and Isis Pet Care through our toughest challenge yet!

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Willâ&#x20AC;? you be leaving your family happy? Making a Will is the only way you can decide what happens to your property and possessions after your death. If you do have a will, make sure you review it from time to time as your personal circumstances may have changed significantly since you made it. If you die without a will, your estate will be distributed according to the law, rather than according to your wishes. Making a will is not as difficult as people sometimes think - in most instances it is a fairly straightforward and inexpensive procedure. Here are a few commonly asked questions, where the answers may not be as you would have expected:

1. I have lived with my partner for five years - will they inherit on my death? Not unless you have made a will, naming them as a beneficiary. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy apply. Unfortunately, they do not provide for co-habitees, only to those who are married or who have entered into a civil partnership. Your partner may be able to make a claim against your estate in certain circumstances.

2. I have step children and I have raised them as my own children since they were young - will they inherit when I die? They will not benefit unless you provide for them in your will. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy apply and unfortunately, they make no provision for stepchildren.

3. I have young children. If my husband and I die, will my

parents be able to bring them up? Not necessarily. Unless you have appointed a guardian in your will, whether it be a relative or a friend, no-one will be legally entitled to take care of the children and an application would have to be made to the court.

4. If I do not make a will, does that mean that my spouse or civil partner will get everything? No, this will not necessarily happen. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy have to be followed and this could mean that your spouse or civil partner does not inherit everything. Always remember, dealing with an estate during a bereavement is a difficult task, so having a will in place, outlining your wishes, can greatly assist your loved ones. The peace of mind which you will be creating could be the greatest thing which you can leave to them.

As this is my first attempt at a magazine column, I have been sitting here with many ideas and struggling to decide what to write about first – there are so many issues that are important in the area. My aim is to make this an informative column, covering recent topics and advice and also to open it up to you, the reader, to make comments and ask questions which I will endeavour to answer.

Bourne Festival 2014: The festival has now

passed and, from a policing perspective, was a huge success. This year, Lincolnshire Police Licensing Department worked closely with the organisers to ensure that the event ran smoothly. Over the whole weekend only nine ‘Section 27’ notices were issued and two arrests made. Apart from the weather, it was obvious that everyone enjoyed themselves. The Section 27 notice is a very useful policing tool to reduce the threat of crime and disorder and comes from Section 27 of the “Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006”, which states that if alcohol is involved, and there is a fear that there may be crime or disorder related to that alcohol, the police can require those involved to leave a defined area for a period of time not exceeding 48 hours. Having used it many times myself, I can say that it does work, stopping a crime or disorder from happening, before it happens!

Insecurity Burglaries: As the weather

improves (and I am sure it will!) many people will be in their gardens, enjoying the sun, having a barbecue or gardening. I fully understand that people will open windows to let fresh air in, but if you go outside, don’t leave yourself vulnerable to a “sneak-in- burglar”. The one thing that many forget is to make sure that the house is secure, windows are shut and doors locked. Also don’t forget to lock the side gate, shed and garage. Thieves are opportunistic and will look for a soft target. It only takes a few seconds for someone to enter your house and remove your purse/wallet, computer or car keys!

Social Media: One common complaint the

police receive is allegations of threats or abuse on Facebook. Here are a few simple tips to protect yourself, before the police become involved: 1) Do you actually know everyone on your friends list? Take a look through it every now and again and weed out people you don't know, or no longer speak to. Do you want to share your life with strangers? 2) There is a new "acquaintance" function on Facebook where you have control over what your friends see. If you don't know them so well, mark them as an acquaintance and they'll only see what you choose. 3) Did you tag yourself on that holiday? It's great to tag yourself at the interesting places you visit, but be careful about advertising the fact that you're not at home. 4) Facebook allows you to make your phone number and e-mail address publicly available. If you have problems with someone on Facebook, it's easy to delete and block them, but if they have your e-mail and number too, it might not be so easy to get rid of them. Consider taking these off your profile. 5) Review your privacy settings frequently. Facebook often change privacy tools and policies, which could leave you vulnerable when you thought you were secure. 6) “Tag review”. In your privacy settings is an option to review posts or photo’s you're tagged in before they appear on your timeline. That way, you have more control over what other people put on your profile. 7) Facebook has a number of safety functions. If you're receiving abuse from someone, report the offending posts to Facebook, delete the person from your friends list and block them. It is amazing how many people decide to call out the police before they've even taken these simple steps.

Cover with the lid and cook for 30mins until the skin is just starting to crisp up around the edges. Turn the heat down to low/medium heat and cook for 1 ½ hours. You may have to rotate the pork around the barbeque as some sides may cook quicker than others. The pork should start to look dark golden all over and the skin should start to crisp up around the edges. Turn the heat up to high and cook for 5-10 minutes longer.

Valuable Advice from the Antenatal Educator, Claire Chambers

After several years of working abroad, I returned to England to start a family and soon realised the importance of the role of a parent. Our decisions, actions and reactions shape and influence our children so much. After attending an NCT (National Childbirth Trust) antenatal course for my fourth pregnancy, I discovered there was so much I didn’t know, so many things I had never been told. I knew I just had to find out more, so decided to go to university to train as an antenatal educator. Whilst in training, I gave birth to my fifth baby, so I got to put into practice all I had been learning! I am fortunate enough to now work with the NCT and run my own private antenatal classes. It is a real privilege to have worked with so many wonderful parents at such a special time in their lives and I can’t think of a better profession.

Travelling with babies and little ones As our thoughts turn to relaxing holidays at this time of the year, it reminded me there was once a time when jumping onto a plane to go on holiday was something to which I gave little thought. Now, “jumping onto” anything with five children seems a crazy idea! However, it doesn’t need to be as daunting as it may seem, and, with a little planning, you can make these trips more fun for everyone. • Before booking your holiday, find out about the area and what’s going on at that time of year. The locals may love the 24 hour carnival but your tired toddler may not! • Think about ease of travelling. How far is the accommodation from the airport, for instance, and is it better to take a taxi rather than the coach with the holiday company? • Remember to check with your airline what you can take in hand luggage, (there are many companies that do not allow formula milk) and don’t forget to check what medication you need, as allergies, first aid and prescription medication will often need supporting paper work. 42

• Make sure you speak directly with your accommodation provider, double checking that they do have that cot/highchair to hire etc. You may also find they can offer items such as baby monitors, sterilisers and other baby equipment. • There are many companies that will deliver baby foods and equipment when abroad, which, although more expensive, may reduce your luggage. • For families with children with special needs www.disabledfriends.com offer great advice and tips. • If you are pregnant and planning to travel, check your holiday company policies. Some have restrictions if you are in your third trimester. A final note: Slow things down! Children and babies go at their own sweet pace, so try to be realistic about what you can fit into your daily schedule, thinking about regular feeding/nappy/toilet breaks. Come and join the next “Why Weight 7lb Weight Loss Challenge” We have just reached the end of our June “7lb Weight Loss Challenge”, where we had over 30 ladies and gents committing to losing at least 7lbs throughout the month of June. As a group, we lost over 17 stone of FAT in just 28 days … that’s 238 packs of lard!!! Clients lost weight with us in two ways - Some used one of our meal replacement programmes, combined with our supportive groups, whilst others chose to lose weight eating conventional food and attending our groups and weigh-ins for support to achieve their goals. As this has been so popular and successful, we have decided to run another challenge throughout July, which will run for 4 weeks, between Thursday 3rd July and Thursday 31st July. To be part of the challenge, simply commit to coming to be weighed each week and staying to the weekly group meetings as often as you can – the more groups you attend, the more you will learn about your relationship with food and what needs to change in your life, in order to keep the weight off in the long term. The support, encouragement and motivation you will receive from us and the other group members cannot be over-stated. You are far more likely to be successful at losing and maintaining weight if you join one of our groups.

Stress and anxiety are feelings of being under too much mental or emotional pressure. People have different ways of reacting to stress, so a situation that feels stressful for one person may be motivating for someone else. How to protect yourself

I was contacted this week from a number which didn’t register on my phone. They claimed to be from Parkinsons UK and I spoke to a rather smooth telephone operator who wanted me to set up a direct debit so that I can support their charity. Something told me that with the tone of her voice and “pushiness” that something wasn’t right and she insisted that I should give her my bank details. This is something you should never do. If you are ever wondering whether something is correct or not, try and get even the smallest piece of information from the individual and quickly do a google search. For instance, if someone has told you that you have won the Spanish Lottery, google “Spanish Lottery scams”.

The scam is likely to be linked to organised crime and we strongly advise you not to respond in any way. Remember that it is highly unlikely you have been ‘specially chosen’ by someone living abroad. You are instead one of many people that the scammers are trying to trick. You should never give out your bank account details unless you are certain of who you are dealing with. If you have already given the fraudsters this information, tell your bank immediately.

John Clare, Nature Poet

July Festival in Helpston --------------------------------------------In May 2014, we saw the 150th anniversary of local poet John Clare’s death. Born in the village of Helpston, just north of Peterborough, John Clare had humble and mostly self-educated beginnings but is now seen to have been one of England’s finest poets. His words capture you and take you with him as he walks the fields, woods, heaths and hedgerows of his native countryside, and his use of language can astonish and delight:

“I love to hear the evening crows go by And see the starnels darken down the sky; The bleaching stack the bustling sparrow leaves And plops with merry note beneath the eaves;”

Clare used local words for many of the birds and native plants and animals he described; starnels are starlings. He thought of himself as a simple man, and was deeply wounded by the violent changes to his countryside as the enclosures were enforced all around the landscape.

Every year, the John Clare Society holds a literary festival in the village of Helpston, where you can find out about the man, his life and poetry, and this year, it will run from July 11th to the 13th. Clare Cottage is open to the public every week from Thursday to Sunday and it will be hosting a music evening in the festival weekend. www.clarecottage.org Bourne based, folk trio Pennyless have performed at many events celebrating the life of John Clare, appearing last May on BBC’s “Countryfile” and this year at the Cottage in Helpston, and Library and Museum in Northampton. Kingsoft Office – the free alternative to MS Office

I am often faced with customers that have very little need for MS Office at home, or indeed customers that do not want to pay a steep license fee for their limited use. You may already be aware that there are a number of low cost and free alternatives to MS Office including Kingsoft, OpenOffice and LibreOffice but which is the best? I recently tried out the three offerings mentioned above and one application came out way ahead of the other two, that best being the Kingsoft Office Suite. With a slick easy to use interface, very similar to the MS Office apps, and the ability to set it to save in Office format, plus the compatibility with both the older .doc and the newer .docx files, Kingsoft truly is ‘king’. make Kingsoft the DEFAULT application for opening the MS Office file types. If you haven’t got MS Office installed then leave the boxes ticked. In both cases I would advise leaving the ‘Save new files as .doc, .xls and .ppt’ ticked for maximum compatibility with MS Office. The install will now complete and you will see the Kingsoft icons on the desktop. Finally Kingsoft will open its Writer to display additional information. This can look confusing to the new user but don’t worry, this screen will go away after the first use.

How do I install Kingsoft?

You can download the standard application free from www.kingsoftstore.co.uk. Click on Downloads then click on the Download button next to the free version (note: that there is also a professional version available) You will then be prompted to continue and accept the license Finally select the style of interface that you prefer… IMPORTANT: On completion you will be asked to select a few options.

July Golf Tip: Improving your short game II Last month I mentioned how to improve your bunker play, this month a tip on how to improve the short chip shot. When you are just off the green, just a few yards and there is plenty of green to roll the ball to the hole. The chip shot is perfect with the loft of say a 7 or 8 iron to carry the ball onto the green and let it roll to the hole. To play effectively, grip the club slightly firmer than normal, place the ball nearer the back foot and keep the hands pressed forwards. Swing the club as if it were your putter, keeping your lower body still and just rock the shoulders back and through. The tip is to imagine that the ball has a tack sticking out of it where you are going make the strike, then as you rock the shoulders back and through, imagine knocking the tack into the ball. The Len Pick Trust (Registered Charity No. 1106598)

Successful Conservation Project A local conservation project has seen Barn Owls nesting in a purpose built owl tower in a field on the outskirts of Bourne for the first time. Previously the owls had nested for the past twenty five years in an old barn owned by the Len Pick Trust which had become unsafe. Using reclaimed bricks from the barn, students from Peterborough Regional College built the four metre high tower in the middle of the field as a replacement nesting site. Earlier this week, the young barn owl chicks were ringed under licence by Bob Sheppard and Alan Ball of the Barn Owl Conservation Network. There were five healthy youngsters in the nest at the top of the tower. Bob, who designed the tower, was thrilled the owls had used it so quickly after it was built. He said this is a great result. The owl chicks are seven weeks old and will soon be flying. They will leave the area in late summer and find their own nest site. It is hoped the adults involved in the final design and construction to give their Building Course Students some real will remain and breed in the tower every year. practical experience. etrified, panting and panicking, my chest lurched with each excruciating stride. I had to get away. Scrutinizing my surroundings, I spotted a nearby lake glimmering desirably in the moonlight that was soon to be my blanket of safety.

I jerked forward violently as I got heaved back - a wave of dread washed across my face. “My rucksack,” I whispered in fear. I could hear the flicker of fire creeping up on me, almost cackling malevolently. I tugged and twisted, trying to tear free. I was trapped. With an explosion of fury, I ripped my intertwined rucksack away from the grabbing arms of the tree and stumbled away with haste, leaving the horror far behind me.

A Weekend in Marrakech…

A beguiling assault on the senses, the rose-red city of Marrakech, named after the warm pink hue of its medina walls, is an abundance of colourful souks, opulent palaces and luxuriant gardens. Magical Marrakech; one of the fascinating Imperial Cities of Morocco, Marrakech is a vibrant, colourful city where modern and traditional life are naturally united. At its heart is the ancient Medina, with its myriad of bustling alleyways, souks and of course the famous Jemma el Fna Square, where you will find snake charmers, story tellers, and the maze of stalls serving delicious, freshly cooked local food. In contrast, there is the new town where you will find sophisticated restaurants, bars and nightclubs, where fashionable locals and tourists mingle together; Marrakech offers the best of both worlds. You will also want to discover the famous souks where everything from Arab slippers to woodcarvings can be found. A highlight is the Souks des Tenturiers dyers’ market where the pavestones are splashed with a rainbow of fresh tints and a kaleidoscope of newlycoloured wools and silks billow above the market stalls. Seat of Morocco’s ruling dynasties for centuries, Marrakech’s finest monuments can easily be explored on foot including the ornate minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, the remains of the 16th century Badi Palace; nicknamed ‘The Marvel’ for its Italian marble and Sudanese gold decor and the sumptuous Saadian tombs with their carved alabaster and zellige tiles details. The accommodation that I offer is dotted all over the city, with the majority being beautiful old riads hiding behind fairly mediocre doors; yet once inside, you realise you have entered an oasis of calm and can hear nothing but the sound of birdsong and a gently

trickling fountain. The perfect retreat after a long hot day discovering the ancient city and haggling in the souks for local handicrafts to take home. I also offer a handful of villas outside of the Medina which are fantastic for families looking for larger pools and more space for the kids to enjoy. After a few days exploring the bustling, hectic city of Marrakech, a stay in the High Atlas Mountains is the perfect antidote. Lush, verdant valleys, snow-capped mountain peaks; it is hard to believe that the tranquil, rural life led in the High Atlas is a mere hour from the madness of Marrakech. Here Berber life remains unchanged as it has done for many years, locals living a simple life and relying on the surrounding land to make a living. The Berbers are friendly, welcoming people and you may even find on a gentle mountain hike that you are invited inside a mud baked pise house for a glass of homemade mint tea. In the High Atlas I offer an assortment of accommodation, from more rustic retreats through to the magnificent Kasbah Tamadot, Sir Richard Branson’s idyllic mountain retreat. Morocco is ideal for couples and families looking for culture (a blend of Arab, African and European influences) souks for shopping, grand palaces, deserts and mountain villages to name a few. The country is lush and green in spring (mid-March to May) and the heat of summer eases in autumn (September to November). So ideal for some winter sun getaway. ...Bourne’s Wherry’s windmill by Rex Needle

indmills first appeared in Persia in the 7th century, reaching Europe 500 years later and thereafter their use spread rapidly. By the early 19th century there were 10,000 windmills in the country, grinding grain, driving mechanical saws, raising coal, pumping water and making paper. They became a familiar part of the landscape around Bourne where they were used to drain the fens. In 1763, for instance, fifty windmills or wind engines are listed as working in the vicinity to service 30,000 acres of farmland that has since become some of the most productive in the world. They were also essential for grinding corn and as a consequence most towns and villages had one although most have since been dismantled. One of the largest was sited to the north of Bourne at the junction of what is now Mill Drove and North Road and dating from the early 18th century although the original structure was rebuilt as a four-sailed windmill in 1832 when the old stone tower was raised to six storeys in height. In 1843 it was advertised to let as “a tower windmill with patent sails and three pairs of stones”. It became known as Wherry’s Mill after the family which owned it and continued grinding corn until 1915 when it was struck by lightning

and badly damaged, reducing it to two storeys. The stump was later used as a storeroom by a subsequent owner, the late Tom Jones, an antique dealer, who lived at the Mill House where he utilised adjoining outbuildings to display his antiques. After his death, the remains of the mill were demolished in 1994 to make way for a new house. The picture above shows the mill in the late 19th century and the cottage on the right was the North Road toll keeper’s house. All animals and road traffic were charged before they could pass and a billboard displayed the fees such as sixpence for a pony and trap. There is evidence that a second mill once stood on the south corner of Mill Drove because a map from the early 19th century shows this road connecting with the main Peterborough to Lincoln road, now the A15, “at a place between the windmills”. Few windmills can be seen in the countryside today and those that do survive are usually listed buildings that are preserved as a reminder of our industrial past.

Big Week Ahead for Bourne Cricket Club

Local, top side, Bourne C.C. will be proud to host their Annual Cricket Week on the Abbey Lawn from Monday July 21st this year. Traditionally, a full, one-day game will be followed, each evening by a rather more frantic, unorthodox version of the beautiful game. A flavour of what will be in store for the spectators can be gauged when casting an eye over some of the participating 6-a side team monikers : “Happy Hookers”, “Baston Tarts” and “Jubilee Jockstraps”- get the message? The all-day games will see a Bourne XI battle against Bourne Optimists (Monday), Ketton (Tuesday), Leicester Globetrotters (Wednesday) and Ilkeston Tradesmen (Thursday). The 6-a side tournament, with the prestigious Hodgkinson Cup for the winners, (kindly sponsored by Stephen Knipe and Co. and Adrian Smith) will provide no small degree of fierce rivalry, with much pride at stake. Last year’s winners were Bourne Rugby Club, and they are likely to be challenged this time by their Rugby Club Second Team of Happy Hookers, Bourne Services’ Washday Blues,

Bourne Optimists, Old Brunnians, Baston Tarts, Motley Crew and the Jubilee Jockstraps, (or Smiths’ Smackers). New teams on the square this year include Master Batters and the erudite practitioners of Bourne Academy, as yet nameless, hopefully not aimless! The Cricket Week has always been a key event in the calendar for boosting bar profits and hopefully attracting more spectators than ever before to this delightful ground. Bourne Cricket Club plays its home games on the immaculately maintained and picturesque Abbey Lawns and has also practice net facilities at Edenham Village Hall, near Bourne, where some junior games take place. Bourne CC has four adult teams, two on a Saturday and two on a Sunday, as well as a strong junior set up, with teams going from Under 9 right up to Under 17 level. The First Team plays in the Lincolnshire Premier League on a Saturday with the Second Team competing in the South Lincs. and Border League, Premier Division.
