A
s August 4th approaches, the day, one hundred years ago, that Britain entered the First World War, we devote some of this month’s edition to the remarkable story of one local family. Four brothers from the Stooke family sacrificed their lives and are remembered in the beautiful church of St. Stephen’s, Carlby. We also hear about the brave Bourne lads enlisting to go to the War. This summer has witnessed the sporting feasts of the football World Cup in Brazil; the Tour de France hopping over the Channel for a couple of frantic days in Yorkshire; England entertaining (occasionally, at times!) Sri Lanka and now India on the cricket field; Wimbledon and, very soon, the British Open golf tournament at Hoylake and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Sport, however, needn’t be entirely in the hands of the spectator. Why not take to the cycle yourself? Why not investigate equestrian activities, or golf for the family? What about donning the gear and getting involved, locally? There are many opportunities to “get sporty” this summer and we highlight some this month, bearing in mind the long school summer holiday is fast approaching. Join a club, with your children, and get active! As usual, you’ll find a wide variety of informative items this month. Lifestyle features include the alarming increase in diabetes, how renewable energy in your home could be yours with Manor Energy, a profile of local osteopath, Emma Mersseman, how sleep is crucial to our health, not just for babies, and how speeding motorists can expect trouble on the road to Stamford! Many more pages, of school news from Bourne Abbey and Bourne Grammar, financial and legal advice from local experts, the quiz page, Sergeant Mosley musing for us and even a piece on Lapland for Christmas, make it, hopefully, an interesting and eclectic mix. Finally, this month, we include an opportunity for you all to get involved in the Neighbourhood Plan for the whole Parish of Bourne. Our town is expanding rapidly and the questionnaire included here is the chance for you to have your say as to how you’d like it to be in the future. Please help MAKE IT HAPPEN and don’t just sit back and LET IT HAPPEN. Enjoy the magazine and please keep the ideas and suggestions coming, by e-mailing editor@discoveringbourne.co.uk . Many thanks for all your words of encouragement.

Bourne to Perform Watch out Glastonbury By Leanne Beeken Photos by Alexandria Frances
Community spirit flourished at Bourne’s Summer Carnival, which showcased local talent. Despite the grey skies, Bourne Borderers Morris dancers commenced the festival fever with rhythmic stick dances, and traditional colourful costumes. Food fanatics could indulge in continental food, including the Delicious Belgian Chocolate stall, which satisfied the sweetest taste buds. Meanwhile, Peppa Pig helped local business owners judge the 0-11 years fancy dress competition. The prizes included a deliciouslooking chocolate bouquet from Sweet Sensations. Bourne Corn Exchange was transformed into a creative haven by Stamford Artisan’s craft stalls. The welcoming Wild Heart Café hosted acoustic artists including: Andy Hughes, Emily Morgan, Conner Johnson, and musicians from Bourne Academy. Artists performed on the closed A15, which became the main stage. Highlights included Far Beyond Fiction’s Stevie Wonder covers. ‘Superstition’ was led by Bryonie Carnan’s powerful vocals, and ‘Isn’t She Lovely’, was performed by Charlie Farrar’s adept vocal range. Drummer Will Beavis provided a solid groove, whilst bassist Sam Harding and guitarist Aaron Beeken (Bourne Academy’s Head of Music) ended back to back, in the audience, with guitars pointing high. The talent varied when dancer, Lauren Willis, performed an outstanding solo. Dance performances require powerful movements, a constant smile, and confidence - Lauren had it

all. At 3:15pm, Sons of Kal-el rocked the stage. They played tracks from ‘Songs from the Phantom Zone’, which can be bought on Amazon and iTunes. The enthusiastic audience sang alongside Chad Sunderland’s rock vocals. The band thrived in their performance, particularly when Aaron Beeken climbed onto the speaker, holding his guitar high, while continuing to play ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’. Further highlights included Albion. The energetic five-piece, led proficiently by Harry Preen, consisted of musicians from Bourne Academy. Albion had a strong rapport with fans, showcased when Sam Harding jumped off the stage once again. Albion’s success will undoubtedly continue at Camden’s Barfly, where they will compete in MMG’s Battle of the Bands. Bourne Summer Carnival’s organisers send a huge thank you to local businesses for their support, and a special thank you to Bourne Academy.

Do you use Lincs Alert? I signed up to Lincs Alert when it was first launched in September 2011 and since then, I still come across a considerable number of people who have not heard of it so, if you are one of those, please read on as you are missing out!
What is Lincs Alert?
Lincs Alert is a community messaging system run by Lincolnshire Police. Once you are registered, you will receive regular live updates about crime and anti-social behaviour that is happening in your area. You will also receive crime reduction and community safety advice and gain access to crime figures for your area via the website. It also acts as a two-way communication tool where you are encouraged to report any information that you might have previously thought was too trivial or not worth reporting to the Police. Alerts can be received via email, text or telephone. The Lincs Alert system also works hand in hand with Neighbourhood Watch and operates an on-line virtual NHW scheme where you can share ideas with other members in your area.
Benefits of Lincs Alert:

|Home & garden by Yasmin Chopin, local Interior Designer
Family friendly kitchens
T
he kitchen is the hub of the home and it is often the room we remember as being the place where we were nurtured as children, where we learned about family life and where we saw food prepared and brought to the table. The trend in kitchen design has been towards a streamlined look with high gloss cabinetry and granite work tops. Improvements in kitchen technology have given us:• large deep drawers that close quietly with a gentle nudge • plug sockets that pop up from work surfaces when required • extractor fans that seem to hover in space, and • surfaces that have ‘easy to clean’ written all over them I wonder if kitchens are becoming sterile and characterless? Have we gone a step too far and designed all the love out of them? When I met internationally famous kitchen designer Johnny Grey earlier this year he said that the kitchen has to be a friendly space, a place to be lived in where clutter is evidence of family life and
14
where creativity should be encouraged. I found his words inspiring because I’m forever trying to tidy up and put away and keep work surfaces clear. His ideas inform his designs so that they contain ledges for putting things on, little round tables for kids to sit around, a corner here and there for a book or some papers and somewhere to perch and rest while the potatoes are boiling. You can have a modern design with simple lines and smart styling but you don’t need to remove visible signs of your family’s story. So, breathe easy, you can leave the kiddies’ drawings on the fridge and have the jar of coffee on view along with last night’s opened bottle of wine. In the design world we often describe certain materials as ‘forgiving’ and I think kitchens can be designed with this in mind. They can still look good with crumbs on the work surface, finger marks on the doors and scuffs on the floor. How do you rate your kitchen for ‘forgiveness’?
If are thinking of upgrading your kitchen get in touch with Yasmin to discuss your ideas, phone 07831 231664 or email ycid@YasminChopin.com

|Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley
“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”
Another month has passed and the weather is improving – as I promised! Wimbledon has been and gone, and saw a Canadian in the women’s final (for those of you who don’t know, I am Canadian so I felt very patriotic, much to the annoyance of my better half). The England football team had a short trip to Brazil, so the impact on policing, for the remainder of the World Cup, was minimal, and for what there was, I can report that there were very few incidents relating to the football which required a police response. All in all, dare I say it? the last month has passed relatively peacefully. Drink Driving : There has been a recent road safety campaign in Lincolnshire to target what is known as the “Fatal Four”, which are the primary causes of serious injuries and deaths on the roads. These are drink/drug driving, speeding, using mobile phones at the wheel and not wearing seatbelts. In the Stamford and Bourne area alone, over the last month, ten people have been arrested for drink driving, including two drivers on a ‘first date’. I can’t say how the date itself went, but it certainly didn’t end how they had hoped! For all these drivers, it will mean an appearance at Court, loss of driving licence and, possibly, the loss of their job. All this before you count the vastly increased insurance costs when they get their licence back. I often get asked, “Well, how many drinks can I have and still drive?” My answer is always, “None!” It is impossible to say how any alcoholic drink will affect you, so the simple answer is - if you are going to drive, then don’t drink any alcohol. I was also recently asked a question, “Can the police test for drugs when someone is driving?” Yes, we can. The test is similar to the old tests for drink driving, where the doctor would ask you to walk in a straight line, heel to toe, and to close your eyes and touch your nose. A failure has the same consequences as for drink driving. Lincolnshire Police have recently launched a text messaging service for the public to report possible drink drivers. Simply text ‘DRINK’ along with the
20
vehicle details, when and where, to 80800. This is not about ‘grassing’ someone up, it is simply about saving lives. Home Security : It is now the holiday season and many lucky people will be going away for their summer holidays. Below are a few simple tips to help increase the security of your home while you are away: • Make sure all your windows and doors are firmly closed and locked. Set the alarm, if you have one, but let a keyholder know the code. • Adequate lighting is important, but don’t light areas which are not overlooked as this gives the criminal light to work in, with little chance of detection. • Make sure all valuables, such as jewellery, are hidden well away. • Fit locks which are fit for purpose to your windows and doors. All final exit doors should be fitted with at least one five-lever mortice lock which is BS3621. • Use automatic timers to light up your home and consider using timers on any radios inside your property, to give the appearance of occupancy and create a level of uncertainty in the mind of the criminal. • Ask a friend or neighbour to check on your house regularly. They should clear post from the letterbox, put out the bin, and return it, on bin days and even water plants as dead plants may be a bit of a giveaway! Myth Busting : One myth about the police I would love to see the back of is the question I am asked almost every time I work a Friday or Saturday night, dealing with revellers in town, “Can a pregnant woman wee in a police officer’s hat?” The answer is “NO!” Firstly, it is an offence to urinate in public. Secondly, it could be classed as criminal damage to the hat. Finally, what is the police officer supposed to wear on their head after the lady has relieved herself? I expect my officers to wear a hat at all times, when out on foot patrol, so they would have some explaining to do! Ask the Police : Finally, do you have any questions you have always wanted to ask a police officer but haven’t been able to? Are there any subjects you want me to write about in this column? I would be happy to receive any questions you feel you want to ask, either myself or the local Neighbourhood Policing Team. To get in touch, you can e-mail the team direct at bourne.npt@lincs.pnn.police.uk. Alternatively, you can reach us on Facebook at www.facebook. com/bournenpt, or on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ bournebboronpt .I will keep all questions anonymous.

Punjaban Rack of Lamb Serves 4 1 x Jar of Punjaban curry paste
4 x Racks of lamb, each with 4 cutlets
This Indian adaptation is easy to make and will be a definite hit with the family. Traditionally, the marinade would be made from scratch. However, here we have simplified it by using a jar of Punjaban curry paste as it contains the same ingredients and tastes just as good. You can get yourself a jar from Oasis Fine Foods at Waterside Garden Centre and, while you’re there, make sure you visit the King Street Butchery for your lamb, which is sourced from local farms. 1. First, place the lamb racks in a non-metallic dish and rub the curry paste all over, avoiding the bones. Sit the lamb in the dish so the bones point upward, cover and refrigerate overnight. 2. Preheat the barbecue hotplate to medium. When hot, lightly drizzle some oil on the hotplate to grease it. Cook the lamb, skin or fat side down, on the hot plate for 5 minutes so the paste looks very well cooked, almost charred, around the edges of the rack. Then turn over and cook the racks for another 5 minutes. 3. Once this is done, wrap each rack in some foil, making sure the edges of the foil are tightly sealed, then place them on a cooking rack. Sit the cooking rack on the hotplate, close the lid and cook for 15 minutes. This should cook the lamb so it is pink in the centre. If you prefer medium, simply cook for an extra 2 minutes while still in the foil. 4. Once cooked, remove the lamb and place it on a plate to rest, still wrapped in foil. 5. Either serve an entire rack per person or carve into individual cutlets.

The past 12 months have been a fantastic year for the Bourne Business Chamber
R
ecently we held our second annual trade fair in the Bourne Corn Exchange and our membership has risen to around sixty with a large cross section of trades and services. This constitutes a rise of around 35% and this is attributable to a relaxed, friendly but business-like atmosphere plus some sterling work carried out by Claire Saberton, our new membership secretary. These efforts were backed by top quality support and representation in the Discovering Bourne magazine, our involvement with local discussion groups and some superb support from our members via word of mouth marketing and personal invitations. We have also become far more active in the local area with strong links into the Bourne Town Council, the South Kesteven District Council and Lincolnshire County Council, helping them to promote their services and events whilst providing a ‘voice’ for local businesses back into these governmental organisations. These links were reinforced in March when our local MP, Nick Boles visited the group to answer member’s questions. As a direct result of this visit, some of our members are shortly heading down to London to visit the Houses of Parliament for a tour. In the Spring we helped South Kesteven District Council produce a ‘Shop Local’ map for Bourne, providing visitors and residents with an updated and accurate map of the town’s businesses,
services and attractions. These maps are available around the town and also to download from http://www.southkesteven.gov.uk/index. aspx?articleid=7160 July saw our first group sponsored social event of the year with a well-earned meal at the Three Horseshoes in Thurlby. This is the first of two social events that we organise each membership year.
If you’d like to learn more about the group then visit our web site www. bournebusiness.co.uk or chat with any of our members.

|Your Finances by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd
Beating Inflation Mr B asked: “A combination of low interest rates and inflation has made it all but impossible for UK savers to make a real return on their savings, this is causing my wife and I a lot of frustration. What do you suggest?” Using cash accounts is recommended for funds to which you require access in the short term, but keeping funds invested in cash longer term exposes it to inflationary risk. Holding a combination of different savings and investments will help provide a diversified mix of assets and give your money a better chance of seeing returns above the rate of inflation and will spread the risk it is very unusual for the value of all asset classes to fall at the same time. One way of reducing your exposure to this erosion of buying power is diversification, so that ‘all of your eggs aren’t in the same basket’. This means using a balanced mix of assets in order to minimise your exposure to a single underperforming area, such as cash savings. Landmark can look at your overall objectives and provide you with a tailored investment planning report with the aim of generating returns above those of traditional savings accounts and inflation. This service offers an in depth review of your existing ISAs, savings and investments to check they meet your needs - including your risk tolerance - and, if required, build you a portfolio that aims to bring the overall return you are looking for whether it be just to beat inflation or something a little more ambitious. Our investment process is built around a number of factors, all of which are personal to you – we do not believe in fitting you into a solution, we will make a solution to suit you! Some of the factors we take into account are:
• How much risk you are willing to take • How long you want to invest for • Whether you need your investments to generate a regular income • How much capital growth you want • What existing investments you already hold • Your tax position – now and in the future, different types of investment have different tax treatments • Whether you have any specific financial goals. As well as matching your needs now, your investment strategy needs to be flexible enough to adapt and evolve as they change in the future. This is achieved through regular monitoring and annual face to face reviews of your situation. Recent research found that the cost of living for those aged 65-75 had increased by nearly 25% (Source: saga), however: average savings rates have fallen by 75% (source saga). For those approaching or already in retirement, this difference is a real worry and may well have a significant impact on the income available to live on. With this in mind it is essential to ensure your finances are correctly structured and regularly reviewed so that they remain relevant to your circumstances, regardless of what’s happening in the wider economic environment and in order to stand the best chance of beating inflation. If you would like to speak to someone about your investment options then give the Landmark a call today on the number shown below.

CSA out, CMS in! In December 2012, the Child Support Agency was re-named the Child Maintenance Service and from 30th June 2014 major changes to the applications for child maintenance from the absent parent were introduced. From the end of last month, all new applicants to the CMS will be charged a one-off application fee of £20 whether you are in receipt of benefits or not. The only exclusions are for reported victims of domestic violence, if you live in Northern Ireland or if you are under 19 years of age. From 11th August this year, both parents will bear the charges of collecting maintenance in relation to all cases in the CMS, (the “Collect and Pay” system, as they call it). The charges will be 4% of the total payment, to be deducted at source before you receive it. For the paying parent there will be 20% added on to the child maintenance liability, to be paid as a charge to the CMS. The calculation for child maintenance has now changed for new cases – it is now on gross income, not the net income formula we have been so familiar with. For one child it is 12%, two children 16% and three or more children 19%, for those earning £800 or less gross per week.
By penalising both parents who choose to formalise child maintenance agreements and use the CMS service, the clear message is : reach an agreement between yourselves, make it work and you will save paying parent there money.

If “Energy Saving Solutions”? is the question then
Manor Energy will be the answer
Prestigious local firm, Manor Energy, based in Langtoft and servicing a large area of Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire, have an enviable reputation. They will provide the right advice, by way of technical expertise and how the Government support initiatives can help, so that your decisions will bring you the maximum savings. Director, Mark Cawood, founder of “Cawood Electricals, Bourne”, teamed up with long-established roofing firm, Manor Roofing, based in Deeping St. James, to be able to offer you the complete package of advising, negotiating and installing the various products on the market.
S
o what could Manor Energy offer you? Mark’s answer is unequivocal: - “renewable energy that doesn’t cost the earth!” Householders are forever being encouraged by Government initiatives to switch to renewable energy sources, the most recent of which, the Domestic RHI.,was launched on April 9th 2014. (Full details at www.gov.uk). 1) SOLAR PV. (Panels on the house roof, providing FREE electricity). This is a very popular option and the “Feed In Tariff” scheme (FIT) is still going strong and can provide £800 a year for twenty years. 4Kwp installations are available from £4500. 2) SOLAR THERMAL : These heating systems use free heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water. 3) GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP : This circulates water and anti-freeze around a loop of pipe that is buried in the ground near to the house, to provide a complete solution to your heating and hot water requirements. 4) AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP : Just like a fridge extracts heat from air inside the home, so this method extracts heat from outside. 5) BIOMASS HEATING : Wood-fuelled heating systems can use wood pellets, chips or logs. Carbon emissions are much lower than for fossil fuels and, again, financial support could be available to fund a new boiler. Perfect for replacing an oil boiler. You could earn approximately £21,000 over seven years from RHI. 6) L.E.D. LIGHTING : Let Manor Energy show you the wide range of new alternatives, as LED lamps are replacing the traditional ones, saving approximately 90% of your costs. Perfect for commercial and residential situations. NOW is the time to be making that informed choice on renewable energy and how it could benefit you.

PARISH OF BOURNE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN
QUESTIONNAIRE
Your chance to shape the future of the Parish
Bourne Town Council is backing the production of a Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish of Bourne (which includes Bourne, Dyke, Cawthorpe and Twenty). Neighbourhood Planning is about letting the people who know about and care for an area plan for it. This is a locally written document that sets out the main issues affecting the Parish and how to address them now and in the future. This questionnaire is being circulated via ‘Discovering Bourne’ as it reaches every household in the Parish as a way of obtaining the views of the residents. Please take the time to fill in this questionnaire - this is your chance to have your views on the future of the Parish heard. Each reply will be confidential and highly valued. ONE member of the household should complete the questionnaire after consulting all its members. Each question is very important and will help to define the content of the Neighbourhood Plan. Please complete as many questions, in as much detail as possible. It is important that the initiative for the Neighbourhood Plan comes from the community and whilst Bourne Town Council is fully behind the idea the plan needs to be developed and drawn up by the whole community. Because we feel it is important, we would be grateful if you could complete this questionnaire and return it to the following address by Monday 1st September 2014. Bonanza’s Background Burner - for the professional finish! Almost everyone who has tried to put together a website, flyer or marketing document will have come across the need to remove the background of a snapshot. Most professional images are shown or supplied with a clear or white background, removing the distractions of a cluttered background. For those wanting a quick, easy to use and effective solution take a look at Bonanza’s Background Burner which can be found at…https://www.bonanza.com/background_burner
Start by producing your main image.
In this example the background is my kitchen worktop. I’ve chosen a green background which will make it harder to process.
Next, go to the Background Burner tool, click on “Choose File” and upload your image.
Select the image that is the closest match to your desired output.
In the image shown there is still a slice of unwanted green background.
If you need to adjust further (as here) click on “Touch Up”. Draw a line around the additional area you want removed (shown in red).
Background Burner will process your selection and will update the cropped image. Note: the chequered pattern shown is ‘transparent’ and will not appear in your final image. You will need to register your details to download the result.
Once registered, verify your account (via email), login and select “Download”. You have a choice of JPG or PNG image The file will now be transferred for processing. formats. When complete, the Background Burner dragon will Save your result. You are now done and can process the file and will show samples.
use your new image file in your chosen target. In the sample images shown you can see how it looked originally and how the edited image appears on the page. If you can get as much contrast between the background and the item as possible in the original image, then this tool will work more effectively, for example put your objects onto a piece of white card or material when photographing them).

Type 2 diabetes is considered a worldwide epidemic, with 750 people in Britain being diagnosed with the condition every day. Three simple steps can help reduce your risk: ● Get a blood test – a condition called pre-diabetes, in which blood sugar is moderately higher than usual, often precedes type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes has no obvious symptoms. Although diabetes can be controlled, it cannot be cured; however, pre-diabetics can bring their sugar levels back to normal. ● Eat healthily – seek advice from a qualified nutritionist for specific advice. ● Stay physically active – exercise lowers blood sugar levels. Managing Type 2 Diabetes Although Type 2 diabetes cannot be cured, simple lifestyle changes can dramatically reduce the likelihood of suffering adverse consequences of this disease. Herbal medicine can be a useful weapon in your armoury against this disease. Herbal medicine can improve blood sugar regulation, heart function, circulation and liver function. It can safely be used alongside existing medication and has no side effects. Herbal medicine can be particularly helpful in pre-diabetes. Note: Diabetes cannot be managed with “over the counter remedies”. A qualified Medical Herbalist will fully assess your current health and medications, before prescribing a medicine suitable for your individual needs.

Sleep? Dream on! Wise words of comfort from the NCT When you find out you’re going to be a parent, one of the first things other parents will tell you is to “say goodbye to those lie-ins”. Indeed, the undisturbed sleep you may have been used to before you started your family will be very different from the amount of sleep you will get after your baby joins you. Understanding your baby’s sleep patterns, however, can really help at times when you’re wondering why they don’t seem to be sleeping very much at all. Babies need to wake at night as new-born babies have stomachs roughly the size of a marble, so they need to feed often, to satisfy the demands for growth and brain development. For women who are breastfeeding, these early, frequent feeds help your body to produce the milk your baby needs, and set up your supply of breast milk for their future needs. Night waking at this stage is, therefore, very normal healthy behaviour. Babies cope very well with waking often, adults less so! Going without sleep or having your sleep disrupted can be physically and emotionally draining. This can be particularly stressful if you are returning to work and for partners who are working and trying to avoid having disturbed sleep. It is important to keep in mind that this period of sleep disruption – however difficult and tiring – won’t last forever. If you have disturbed nights, getting through the day can feel like a hard slog. You could try the following: • If you can, sleep during the day, when your baby does. • Don’t worry about non-essential jobs around the house and accept help. • When you can’t take a nap, try relaxation. It can take time to learn this skill but there are many benefits for you and your baby. • It can be a challenge to “live in the moment” sometimes. However, take time to just enjoy your time with your baby - you won’t have this day
NCT Signature Antenatal Courses • Small, interactive classes • Bespoke classes tailored to support your needs • Share your experiences with other new parents 46
again. • If you start to feel short tempered or stressed, a change of environment can work wonders. Grab a coat and your baby sling and head outdoors. • Try and share the sleepless nights with your partner, or have a friend over for the night. We all want to be good parents but we can’t be if we don’t care sometimes for our own needs too. • Join a baby group and there are lots to choose from in Bourne and the surrounding villages. It can often help to know you are not alone. The NCT offer a shared experience helpline where you can speak with others that have faced the same challenges as you (0300 330 0700). If you are finding it difficult to sleep when your baby sleeps, even though you feel exhausted, talk to your health visitor or your GP, as it could be an indication of postnatal depression. Avoid sleep training or controlled crying as it’s not suitable for babies, especially those under 6 months old.

Anxiety, stress and depression Anxiety, stress
S
tress and anxiety are feelings of being under too much mental or emotional pressure. People have different ways of reacting to stress, so a situation that feels stressful for one person may be motivating for someone else. Many of life’s demands can cause stress, particularly work, relationships, money problems, a death of a family member or just not being able to cope with life’s demands. It can be defined as anything that makes us feel tense, angry, frustrated or unhappy and, when we feel stressed, it can get in the way of sorting out these demands or can even affect everything we do.
At Stillwaters, we run the BETTER project which helps to reduce stress and anxiety and helps us learn how to deal with everyday situations that may bring on stress or anxiety.

“Sleep Tight!”
1. Post-dinner shower: Muscle tension caused by stress can make it hard for anyone to relax enough to get to sleep. Run a hot bath or shower and spend some time massaging your shoulders and neck under the warm, soothing water. 2. Yoga before bed: Tight hips, hamstrings,
abs, and back muscles can all contribute to lower back pain. Take a few minutes before bed to target those areas, especially if you run and suffer from a tight or sore back. Pregnancy can also cause back pain.
3. Check your sleep position: “Belly- and
Side-sleepers” tend to suffer more from back pain while sleeping, or may wake up in pain. When on the belly, your spine isn’t supported and will arch towards the floor, compressing your lower vertebrae. If you prefer to sleep on your side, the top knee and thigh slide forward, rotating the lower spine. To keep your spine in a neutral position, sleep on your back with pillows under your knees, or, if lying on your side is a must, place a pillow between your knees to prevent your spine from twisting in one direction. If these positions don’t work, and you crave lying on your belly, reduce discomfort by placing a pillow underneath your pelvis. Use a flat pillow underneath your head to avoid strain on the neck and upper back.
4. Check your mattress: Before deciding to
buy a new bed, if your mattress is two-sided, give
48
it a flip. If it’s one-sided, turn it 180 degrees so the place where your head was is now at your feet. This can lengthen the life of your mattress and give your back the support you need. If your mattress is over 10 years old, it’s probably time to buy a new one. Try out firmer models that won’t sag under the weight of your body, causing your spine to bend. Whether you choose one made with springs or one made completely out of foam, since you spend over 55 hours a week on it, opt for a higher-quality model and your back will be grateful that you did.
5. Watch your weight: Reducing pain while
you sleep may be as simple as reducing your waistline. Extra pounds add unnecessary pressure on your spine, especially if you tend to carry weight around your belly. Eat right and exercise daily, and you’re sure to notice a difference in bed. Getting regular exercise can also reduce inflammation and muscle tightness.
6. Get strong: Toning your core can reduce
pain caused by weakness as well as strain from muscular imbalances. Try this to strengthen your entire torso.

|Health by Philip Hakim BSc(Hons) Ost Registered Osteopath
Practitioner Profile – Emma Mersseman (Registered Osteopath) Why a career in osteopathy?
After reading about it in a career development magazine, I was immediately curious. It sounded the perfect job and, after some voluntary work experience with an osteopath, I left, amazed at what he could do. Using his palpation skills and knowledge of how the body works meant getting people better. What a fantastic reward! Osteopathy looks at the body working as a whole, rather than lots of different parts and that made perfect sense to me. I love the fact osteopathy is a science but also an art.
Where did you study and where do you practice now?
In 2007, I graduated with a B.Sc.in Osteopathic Medicine and an additional Diploma in Naturopathy from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine in North London. I work at The Wellhead Practice in Bourne, and in Gainsborough and Lincoln. From September, I’m increasing my time in Bourne, with more patients requiring more clinical time.
What do you enjoy most about osteopathy?
Everything, (apart from the paper work!). Every individual is a new challenge. You are constantly analysing and putting pieces together as to why someone is in pain. It’s not just easing the pain, but looking further at the underlying cause, which could be to do with posture, lifestyle issues or something more individual such as a leg length discrepancy. I love the fact it is a ‘hands on’ approach and ultimately getting people better.
opener and enhanced my anatomical knowledge – a wonderful challenge! Foot biomechanics is fascinating. The connection between problems with the feet, for a number of different reasons, affecting pain in the legs, back, hips and vice versa, is astounding. Analysing people’s walking pattern (gait) is really interesting, as is the process towards changing this when needed, by way of a strengthening programme and/or assistance with an orthotic insole.
Interests outside osteopathy?
Playing the guitar and singing/song-writing and listening to live music. Running, cycling and swimming are other interests and I’m keen on growing my own food, as I share an allotment.
I recently completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical and Functional Anatomy at the University of Birmingham. Performing detailed dissections on a complete cadaver was an eye

(gracefully)!
FitSteps® came to life in 2013 as the result of a collaboration between two of the UK’s most famous ballroom dancers and Britain’s most successful swimmer! During the long, arduous dance training sessions that are an integral part of Britain’s most successful entertainment show, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, Natalie Lowe, Mark Foster and Ian Waite had a great idea. They decided to mix the graceful steps of Ballroom and the up- tempo steps of the Latin dances together to create a really fun, energetic and effective way to stay fit and keep trim that would appeal to everyone, even if they couldn’t dance. A dance fitness programme that is ‘so much fun you don’t even realise you’re getting fit!’ And FitSteps® is unique. It is the first time that classic Latin and Ballroom dances have been brought together with proven fitness techniques and principles to create not only a programme that can have extraordinarily wide appeal, but one that also has the potential to make a real and lasting impact on the health of the nation. The important point to note is the distinction between the plethora of dance classes that exist and FitSteps®. FitSteps® is a fitness class, delivered through dance. So, our emphasis is on helping people towards fitness - structuring the classes to deliver real, measurable, fitness results.

|Legal Corner - monthly advice from Double and Megson
“One day, my son, all this will be yours!”- Beware! Legal advice on transferring your property Many people believe that, by giving their home to their adult children, they will save save tax, or avoid the liability of care home fees. If you do transfer your home in to the name of your children, that property becomes their property. At the worst, your children could force you out of your home and sell it. Even if you do trust your children, there are certain matters you should consider.
What if your child dies before you? What if your child loses mental capacity? What if your child divorces? What if your child goes bankrupt? The tax position isn’t that simple either. If you give something away, but continue to reserve a benefit of it (giving your home to your children and continuing to live in it), then you are inheritance-taxed at death as if you still owned the asset. Also, most people never pay capital gains tax on their home because of “principal private residence relief”. But if you have given your home away, the owners, your children, are not the people who reside in the property. So that relief is not available to them and they may have to pay capital gains tax on an eventual sale. The rules which assess how much you must pay for your care say that the Local Authority has to include any assets which you have given away with the intention of avoiding having to pay care home fees. . There is no time limit on how far the Local Authority can go back, when considering whether you gave
52
away your assets to purposely avoid paying for those care home fees. If you are assessed as having to pay more care home fees than you can actually afford to pay, (because you have given your home away), the Local Authority could make you bankrupt, and this could mean that the transfer of your home to your children could be set aside, bringing your property back into the equation. There are ways to protect the value of your home and your assets, by effective “later - life planning”.

Your health |
Losing weight is for life, not just for the summer.... So often, we only focus on losing a few pounds if we have a holiday coming up or a special event, and then, once that event has passed, we lose focus and slowly return to our old ways of eating... it’s “back to square one” and sometimes worse. Is this “yo-yo dieting” a familiar cycle that you find yourself in, year in - year out? The bottom line is that there are no quick fixes, no magic wands..... just hard work and perseverance. At “Why Weight”, we are trying to change how people think about losing weight. Instead of being “ON A DIET”, which for many of us is normally associated with a set period of time, or an amount of weight, often with a very short term focus, we are working with our clients to look at weight loss and healthy eating as something that is much more longer- term and something that is incorporated into our lives for LIFE, moving away from quick fixes and yo-yo dieting.
We do offer meal replacements as a way of losing weight, and they are a great way to allow our clients to step away from some or all conventional food for a period of time. However, ALL of our weight-loss programmes have an optional element of conventional food built into them, which means they are much more flexible and work around real life. For those that use our more flexible plans, weight loss may not be as fast but it is being sustained, and our clients are learning to make more sensible choices around food and are still losing weight, which is great practice for long term weight management. So, ‘losing
weight is for life and not just for summer’, is about finding ways to deal with
the challenges that life throws at us, whether that’s an all- inclusive holiday, a birthday meal out or that life is just more stressful than normal. Don’t use the challenge as a reason to quit, but instead, find new ways of incorporating ‘life’ into our healthier way of living.
If you would like more information about “Why Weight” and our weight loss plans and ideas, please get in touch. Contact:

----------------------War poet, Wilfred Owen’s “Anthem for Doomed Youth”, written in 1917, includes the haunting image of soldiers “who die as cattle”, whilst facing the “monstrous anger of the guns” and “the stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle”. Later in the poem, he refers to the “bugles calling for them (the soldiers in the trenches of Northern France) from sad shires”.

A
s we look back, 100 years on from the world- changing events of 1914-1918, we can think of the families left behind as their menfolk answered the call to arms, and just what the conflict must have meant for those ordinary people in ordinary places like Bourne and its surrounding villages, with the bugles sounding in our own shire – Lincolnshire. The sheer scale of the casualties alone is one of the most humbling features of this “war to end all wars”. We have heard of literally millions of deaths – British and Commonwealth, German, French, Russian and many other nationalities caught up in the conflict. However, when we look much nearer to home, it soon makes us realise just what this war meant to small towns and villages hereabouts. It is estimated that in Bourne alone, with its population of 4,343 (1911), around 250 men left the area to fight and a staggering 46% failed to return! In almost every church in the vicinity, there are poignant memorials which illustrate just how universal was the devastation wreaked on communities, large and small. The following list gives just a brief indication of how widespread were the effects of the war. The figures have been drawn from the actual memorials found in each of the village churches mentioned. It is likely that the true death toll was much higher, as research completed after the memorials had been erected often revealed discrepancies.
Aslackby : 11 deaths Baston : 24 “ Billingborough : 18 “ Braceborough : 1 “ Carlby : 7 “ Deeping St James : 44 (and a further 9 not included on the memorial) Folkingham : 8 “ Greatford : 4 “ Kirkby Underwood : 5 “ Langtoft : 8 “ Little Bytham : 12 “ Market Deeping : 25 “ Morton/ Hanthorpe : 16 “ Wilsthorpe : 1 Witham on the Hill : 13

Carlby’s Proud Heritage The Story of the Stooke Brothers
On a small marble plaque inside St. Stephen’s Church, Carlby, near Bourne, are the names of seven servicemen who “gave their lives for home and country in the Great War”. Ernest Couzens, Edward Green and Frederick Holmes had all been born locally and made the ultimate sacrifice, along with thousands of other young men at the time. What is particularly shocking about the other names on the plaque, however, is that they are all brothers, four of the eight sons born to John Robert and Christiana Charlotte Stooke of Carlby. John was the one-time Headmaster of nearby Essendine School, whilst his wife was for a long time, landlady of The Plough public house, just opposite St. Stephen’s. A further six daughters completed the Stooke family. Frank Stooke, aged 30, resident of Belmesthorpe and in the Royal Engineers, died on May 16th 1915. Brother, Arthur Augustus Stooke, in the Royal Flying Corps, was 27
when he died on January 3rd 1917, but more tragedy was to follow. Within a fortnight of each other, and towards the end of hostilities, in April 1918, came news of Frederick Stooke, 20, a Coldstream Guardsman, and his 18 year old brother, Edgar, a Sherwood Forester in the Notts. And Derby Regiment, losing their lives. Brother Harold was to be the only Stooke brother to enlist who actually made it home! The numbers of lives lost, proudly displayed on a cold memorial plate, either on Bourne’s “Memorial Gardens” in South Street, or in any number of small churches throughout the countryside, here in South Lincolnshire, only serve to highlight the enormous scale of the conflict. It’s only when we stop a moment and think of stories like this one of the Stooke brothers, however, that a real perspective can perhaps be placed on the horrors of what all families were having to endure 100 years ago. ...the first Bourne recruits for WW1 by Rex Needle
Y
oung men in Bourne were quick to respond when the call to arms came with the outbreak of the First World War on 28th July 1914. Among the first to enlist for military service were fifteen recruits who left Bourne to join the Lincolnshire Regiment on Monday 31st August.
and hundreds turned out for another rousing meeting to attract recruits. Until then, all were volunteers but in 1916 the government introduced conscription and by the end of the war in November 1918 one in four of the male population in the United Kingdom had joined up, a total of more than five million men.
They are pictured above with an unknown lad outside the recruiting office which had been set up in West Street and were escorted to the railway station at the Red Hall to catch the train to Lincoln by the recruiting sergeant and the town’s brass band with a large number of residents following behind to give them a hearty send-off. It was to be the first of many such farewells from friends and relatives in town and village.
It is not known exactly how many from Bourne went to war but with a population of 4,343 at that time (1911 census) it is estimated that the figure was around 250 and they served mainly with the Lincolnshire Regiment and other infantry units, but also in the cavalry and the guards, the Machine Gun Corps, the Royal Field Artillery, the Tank Corps, medical and ambulance units, the Royal Navy and the Royal Flying Corps.
During the following months, crowds flocked to regular recruiting meetings that were held at the Corn Exchange and in the Market Place where stirring patriotic speeches were given by civic leaders with the slogan “Your country needs you”, an emotional appeal to young men, some of them still boys, who flocked to enlist and fight for their country. In 1915, a detachment of 250 men from the Lincolnshire Regiment accompanied by a pipe band visited Bourne to press the message home that more men were needed at the front
We do know, however, how many did not come back because the War Memorial in South Street records the names of 97 men who died in action although recent research has established that 37 names were missed off when it was erected in 1956 and so the total from Bourne who made the supreme sacrifice was 134.

1. A motor vehicle travels over the speed limit. 2. Volunteers record details of the offending vehicle. 3. Vehicle details are passed to the police via Leics. C.C. 4. The police then check the registered vehicle number. 5. First transgression: Police consider sending “Letter 1” to the registered keeper. 6. Second transgression: Police send “Letter 2” to the registered keeper.
property. In order to ensure the signs have an impact, it is proposed they will not remain in any one place for more than a six week period. For further details, please contact Andy Trevithick at Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership on 01522 805800 Email: staying.alive@lincolnshire.gov.uk
Details of these two letters are amongst more details to be found at www.be alocalhero.com. So far, from March 17th, up until June 15th, the thirteen locations in Leicestershire and Rutland have seen a staggering total of 4148 offenders!
What about Lincolnshire?
Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP) is planning to launch a county-wide Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative to empower local communities to tackle non-safety-critical speeding issues. Over the past year, LRSP has been investigating ‘moveable’ speed information signs, both ‘passive’ and ‘reactive,’ with the intention of developing a new CSW for communities to deploy. The reactive ‘dot matrix’ signs, powered by rechargeable batteries, are attached to a bracket on a lamp post, and are moveable between different brackets. It is envisaged that a community would purchase a number of brackets which would be permanently fixed to lamp posts, and then rotate the reactive signs between the brackets as they wish. This allows for smaller parishes to share signs. The primary benefit is that communities have overall control of them, as they remain their 66

Bourne Rugby Union
Football Club
From humble beginnings just over 25 years ago, Bourne Rugby Club is continuing to build on its achievements and to maintain its place on the sporting map.
History
The club was formed, following a meeting of interested people in The Nag’s Head, in April 1987. They began playing on land generously provided by a local farmer, (off West Road, and now cut through by the by-pass). Within three years, funding was found to purchase sufficient land for pitches and soon after, the club secured the purchase of a sectional timber building which was re-erected to become the clubhouse. The club now had all it needed to set up home on Milking Nook Drove and, due to the endeavour of those early members, and to the efforts of members throughout the years, the club is now a firm part of the local sporting scene. As the club developed, so too did the playing numbers and, within a relatively short period of time, BRUFC was fielding two Senior sides on a regular basis. Playing achievements also followed and these early successes brought local prominence. Further ground improvements followed, including additional storage and training floodlights and, with a recent kitchen re-fit, numerous social events can be catered for, in addition to the post-match meals. 76
The club has always looked towards the youth of the community and, some years ago, a Mini and Junior section was formed. This too proved very successful, recently being enhanced by the addition of a Youth section and now a number of those early junior players regularly represent the Senior teams at weekends. All BRUFC teams have RFU qualified coaches and, as well as coaching at the rugby club, links have been formed with local schools, with coaching being undertaken on their behalf as an extra-curricular activity. Also, within the community, the Senior section has a very close relationship with the Lincolnshire Poachers Regiment and plays against them on an annual basis, both at home and in Germany, in memory of some of their (Poachers) players who have lost their lives in active service in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Future!
The club has ambitious plans for the future and has already commenced work with the local
DiscoveringBourne August 2014 | www.discoveringbourne.co.uk
business community, who have been very generous in their sponsorship of the club. Huge thanks are due here, as their investment has already led to the provision of a newly refurbished and equipped first-aid room, as well as providing the coaches with clubbranded, wet weather clothing and access to development and qualification courses. Furthermore, new specialised rugby training equipment will also be provided for the adult and youth players and the club are working on a rugby proposition that will attract players, young and old alike, to the club in the coming seasons. The club is actively recruiting to strengthen playing membership and, while experience is preferred for First XV duty, the club has a player development policy that enables those with little or no experience to come along and develop at their own pace – a system that works superbly well in the Junior sections as well! As with all clubs, volunteers are the key and, with the Senior teams playing on a Saturday and the Mini, Junior and Youth teams playing on a Sunday, there is a vast number of people who ensure the ongoing success of the club.

Mini and Junior Rugby
Mini and Junior rugby have essentially two different versions of the game – tag and contact – for boys and girls aged 6 to 16 years (girls can play in the Mini and Junior sections up to Under 13 level). School Years 1 – 3 play tag rugby, which is a non-contact version of the game aimed at developing a basic understanding of the rules, learning ball handling skills and building fitness and teamwork. From Year 4, children are gradually introduced to the contact elements of the game over a two to three year period. With RFU (the game’s governing body) qualified coaches at every age range, the club’s aim is to provide a safe environment for children to learn and enjoy the game of rugby. The club has comprehensive policies in place to protect the health and welfare of children and to uphold fair play and positive attitudes to sport.
Senior Rugby
The club has a Senior 1st XV who play on Saturday afternoons and train twice a week at the club (Tuesdays and Thursdays 7 – 8.30pm) as well as a Development team who play and train at the same times. The Development team comprises younger players who are still learning the finer points of the game and a sprinkling of older hands who use their experience to assist in their development. If you’re an experienced player, or just want to try out rugby, please just come to the club at one of the training sessions and you can join in straight away with no initial cost.
