utumn has arrived as I welcome you to this month’s edition. Notice our upgraded front cover, with its stunning portrayal of how North Street, Bourne would have looked to the Brunnians of long ago. Everyone looks back now and again, but here at Discovering Bourne, the future is always clearly in our sights. You’ll find plenty of features this month designed to hopefully make things happier, safer and a lot more colourful in your lives in the days leading up to Christmas. Thanks to all our contributors once again, and special thanks to Rex Needle for our front cover.

A fabulous late-summer break on a yacht flotilla off Greece has just left me totally awestruck by sailing and particularly by the paradise that goes under the name of the Ionian Islands. Now ready to face the darker, cooler months to come, I return to this month’s assembly of fascinating articles and advice which have come together within this magazine. Business profiles and lifestyle sections will, we hope, inform you; our regular legal, police, financial and health columns will, we trust, warn you of potential problems and solutions; whilst the piece on why we “Yeller-Bellies” are the way we are might even entertain you! Enjoy the words and many thanks for all the feedback since our last edition. One to share with you, based on my recent trip. “I was just stood there on the deck, wondering what the boom was for – when it suddenly hit me!”

My top investment pieces include the Keswick 3 in 1 Jacket. The practicalities of the jacket are endless; it features secure pockets, and a windproof design. The waterproof fabric of the jacket’s first layer is guaranteed to keep you dry in harsh winter weather. Another fabulous feature of this jacket is the removable fleece lining; wear both jackets on their own, or together. This enables the jacket to be suitable for any season, whatever the weather. The Moredale jacket features Joules’ signature quilted design, and comes in black, navy, and green. The jacket features smaller quilted detailing at the waist, to create an irresistible complimentary shape. This jacket is waterproof, and washable. It includes two large pockets either side of the jacket, secured by a press-stud. The lightweight material, and warm lining, makes it perfect for any occasion.

New Podiatrist Joins the

Wellhead Practice

P

hilip Hakim and his team at the Wellhead Practice in Bourne are delighted to welcome Amy Leverton B.Sc.(Hons.) as their new Podiatrist / Chiropodist. With a first class honours degree in Podiatry and clinical NHS experience around the country, Amy is well equipped to deal with everything relating to your foot care. Whether it’s a common issue, such as a verruca or nail infection, or a more complex bio-mechanical problem, Amy is keen to help. She is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is a Member of the Society for Chiropodists and Podiatrists (MChS). Amy studied at the prestigious Northampton University Podiatry School and trained in King’s College Hospital in London, Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester Medical School. Away from work, Amy enjoys sport and being with her friends and family. She is currently training to take part in ‘The Suffering’ at Rockingham Castle, one of the toughest obstacle courses in the country. Amy will shortly be joined by another podiatrist. Between them, the Wellhead Practice podiatry service will be able to offer a greater choice of appointment availability than before, including evenings and Saturday mornings. Our prices now include a concessional rate for those over 65 or in full time education. We also offer a new reduced cost dedicated nail cutting service. This is designed for patients who after an initial full clinical assessment predominantly just need their nails looking after.

NEW: Remedial sports massage now available T he Wellhead Practice is delighted in welcoming Rebecca Brett to complement its team of healthcare practitioners. Rebecca is an experienced sports and remedial massage therapist. Whilst the term ‘sport’ is used, it is important to know that you do not need to be sporty to benefit. In fact, there is a wide range of people who come to see a remedial sports massage therapist from the sedentary office worker to those with more of a physical occupation. Indeed age has no bearing as treatments are tailored to an individual’s requirements so the retired gardening enthusiast is just as familiar to us as the young gym fanatic. Rebecca uses a variety of techniques to mobilise, strengthen and stretch soft tissues.

This will invigorate those tired achy muscles and reduce feelings of stiffness and lethargy. You’ll feel less pain, more flexible, posturally more upright and more energised. After the treatment, advice regarding stretching and how you can help prolong the benefits of the massage are given on an individual basis. Rebecca will provide helpful hand-outs covering specific stretching guidance and some rehabilitation exercises are demonstrated. Advice is offered to aid recovery and build strength. When Rebecca is not working in healthcare clinics, she has been found working alongside the England hockey masters team. For the past 4 years she has travelled both nationally and internationally to tournaments enjoying the challenges of working both on and off the pitch and taking some of the credit for the wins of course. For the past two years, Rebecca has also been heavily involved in teaching remedial massage at a respected school in London. We are very happy that such an accomplished practitioner will be working with us in the future. For more information or if you would like to speak with Rebecca, please contact us.

|In the hot seat

Nelly Jacobs

Nelly Jacobs, the current Town Clerk of Bourne, is October’s face on the page with her bottom “in the hot seat”! Married for almost forty years, with three children and six grandchildren, Nelly lists travelling, skiing, reading, gardening and spending time with her friends, and especially her extended family, as her most enjoyable moments. 1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD? I was born in Luzern, Switzerland, where I grew up and was educated. Luzern lies in the central part of Switzerland and the spoken language is ‘Schyzerdütsch’ (Swiss German). My favourite memories of my childhood are times spent with my grandparents in the Principality of Liechtenstein, where we would also meet up with many cousins, aunts and uncles. I first came to England, (London), as an au-pair as I wanted to be able to work on an international basis, and to improve my knowledge and usage of the English language. I have very fond memories of my time in London, not just because I met my husband, but mainly for the fact that I made friends from all over the world. My time in London gave me a real opportunity to sample other cultures.

2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

I believe my mother, who is over 90, has had an enormous influence on my life. Throughout her life, she has continued to learn different skills, whilst raising a family of five. She has a special love of carpentry and weaving, and has produced many toys, for example; dolls’ beds and wardrobes to scale, rocking horses, small wall units and more for her children and grandchildren. I think that we are all kitted out for life with home-made table cloths, place mats and rugs! She has taught me a) that life is all about learning, which never ends, and b) to be positive.

3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? I would love to share a meal with Nelson

8

Mandela. Leo, a very good friend of ours, who has met Nelson on a number of occasions through the Diplomatic Service, has many interesting stories to tell and, after listening to him, I would love to be able to speak to Nelson Mandela personally. I have always been fascinated by his outlook on life and his determination. The second person(s) would be my grandparent(s) from Liechtenstein, as I have been unable to spend time with them as an adult, as they passed away many years ago. As a teenager, I was always amazed at my grandmother’s ‘modern’ outlook. I am sure that with these guests around the table, we would have very animated conversations, covering many topics, provided they could all speak the same language!

4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Inquisitive, family oriented, (at times) lazy, (always trying to be a) perfectionist.

5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I would provide free recreational facilities for the youth of Bourne. Having raised three children in Bourne, I always felt that facilities, where no entrance or membership fee was required, were lacking. Many families find it hard to come up with the money for recreational purposes when raising children and, by depriving these children of opportunities just because family funds might not stretch far enough, does not seem fair.

6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU? Respect and believe in yourself and enjoy your time. Focus on what makes you happy.

DEVELOPMENT THROUGH MUSIC Music can create a very special connection for you and your child even before birth! It has been proven that not only young children but even newborn and unborn babies respond to the basic elements of music.

Playing with your baby and talking to her is one of the most important things you can do to help her development. Having fun together is the best way to bond. When she is tiny, nursery rhymes with actions provide both stimulation and entertainment.

Nursery Rhymes Nursery rhymes play an important role in developing children’s awareness of sounds within words. Simple rhymes like “Pat-a-cake” can start as soon as babies show signs of putting both hands together, and playing finger and toe games like “This little piggy went to market” or “Round and round the garden” are fun, and further help to establish relationships. Frequent reciting of rhymes heightens children’s awareness of rhyming words and develops memory skills. Playing singing and rhyming games with our babies and toddlers gives them the best start they can have in music making. Don’t delay your children’s musical life until she’s old enough to start piano lessons! Babies and toddlers experience music most intensely through the physical and emotional contact they have with the people who care for them most closely. She will not mind what your voice is like to her it’s like magic!

NCT Signature Antenatal Courses • Small, interactive classes • Bespoke classes tailored to support your needs • Share your experiences with other new parents

Just as she will learn to speak and feed herself, draw and cuddle through imitation of you, so will she learn to sing and love music making. The combination of sound and physical contact at this age is fundamental. Singing alone is good as the sound of your voice is in itself a close bond between you; but singing as you rock bounce and play with her on your knee, is the most direct and valuable musical experience you can give.

When to sing Any time can be right to sing songs. When she is grizzly a lullaby may soothe her, a bouncy song can change a baby’s mood instantly and make her laugh and smile. Singing is a great way to soothe and ease tensions, for you and your baby. For example singing a baby to sleep can help you and your baby to relax after a long day. Nappy changes are also a good time to sing touching tickling songs, also when she is warm and relaxed after her feed or bath. The aim of all this is not to produce musical whiz kids, though if you do have musical ambitions this is a good way to start. Songs will help your child to gain a good sense of rhythm and sound. But most important is the fun you have with your child.

“Support for birth, friends for life” Courses now running in Bourne. To find out more: nct.org.uk/signature or call 0300 330 0700. (Concessions available)

Wedding?

What about a Barn near Bourne?

W

Nestling away from Morton’s busy High Street, in the beautiful grounds of The Grange, and overlooking an open meadow, sits a recently renovated threshing barn, dating back to 1760.

ith its wide range of modern appliances in a spotless, well-stocked kitchen, this building can provide the ideal venue for any number of functions. Add a marquee – and you have the perfect location for that wedding reception, anniversary party or any other special party or reunion you may have in mind. Proud owner, Mary Richardson, has been hiring out the barn for five years, gaining a sound reputation within the local area of South Lincolnshire. She feels that the beautiful building, (with its open-beamed ceiling and walls tastefully decorated and exhibiting some quirky, typically rural artefacts) creates that necessary feeling of “being somewhere very special”. Include the modern kitchen, with its fridges, dishwasher and oven, toilet facilities, (with disabled access), and a wood-burning stove in the large reception area, then you can soon appreciate its true potential. For a wedding reception, (for which the large area available for car parking would be a real benefit), Mary recommends the use of the barn itself for the catering, bar and dancing area, whilst the addition of a marquee, abutting the north side, with access through double doors, would provide ample seating accommodation for around one hundred guests. The 2015 “season” runs from May 1st until

September 30th and most week-ends are, as yet, still available. Mary does advise, however, that any enquiries by interested parties should be made as early as possible to avoid disappointment. > Full details, regarding costs and availability of this beautiful barn, are available from Mary Richardson on 01778 570233.

“Ouch!! - I have a pain in my bum, knee and ankle” –

“Piriformis Syndrome”

the foot. “Piriformis syndrome” occurs as the pain travels down the back of the leg into different portions of the lower leg, causing hip, knee and ankle pain.

Treatment

You’ll have probably heard the old song, “Dem Bones”, which told us that, “The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone. The thigh bone’s connected to the hip bone”. Well, it’s true!! Deep in the buttock, there is a muscle called the piriformis and, when in spasm, it can cause a lot of pain. The piriformis is a small muscle which runs from the back of your pelvis to the top of your thigh bone (femur) and is deep in the buttock!

What is piriformis syndrome? Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle spasms and causes buttock pain. The piriformis muscle can also irritate the nearby sciatic nerve. This is a thick, long nerve that passes alongside the piriformis muscle and travels down the back of the leg, branching off into smaller nerves throughout the leg and into

12

I advise to promote blood flow and, ultimately, muscle healing through manual therapy. Manual therapy techniques such as myofascial release (MFR) can be applied to help relieve the tissue tension and trigger points that can form in the piriformis and surrounding muscles. Also to place a stretch on the sciatic nerve, just as you would stretch a muscle, in order to desensitise the nerve, to allow for increased movement without symptoms.

Differential Diagnosis My work at the Fitzwilliam Hospital has taught me the importance of differential diagnosis when anyone presents with hip, knee and ankle pain. Importantly, we have to ensure that there is nothing more serious involved in the cause of pain. This may require advice and the opinion from your GP.

Physically damaged hair can be as bad as chemically damaged hair, (over bleached, coloured or permed), because of the raised rough outer cuticle, hair becomes porous. This means it is like a sponge, it will be harder to dry and although you may be paying for beautiful colours, like the rich browns and plums, they often fade quickly because they are not locked in. Bleached hair is already more fragile and needs even more protection.

Wet, windy weather can be a nightmare if you have wavy hair. The use of straighteners will help to keep your hair in place and it may already have become dry from the summer, making it harder to control. It is important to always use a heat protector whilst straightening or curling to avoid excessive damage; it also helps to smooth hair, giving you more control. Don’t forget you are ironing your hair! Without some protection you will cause the smooth cuticle on the outside to rise making it rough, you will end up using more heat and it all becomes a vicious circle!

BOURNE TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

!

W

ith the development of Bourne and its expanding population over recent years, some newcomers to Bourne could be excused for not knowing that the town even has a football club. Tucked away down Abbey Road on the Abbey Lawns is Bourne Town Football Club and its clubhouse. The club was formed in 1883 and to this day still manages to run a first team and a reserve team. It also houses the under 18’s on a Sunday morning and Bourne Ladies team. Whilst the club may not have had as much success as they want on the pitch of late, real progress is being made behind the scenes with a dedicated committee of local people who give up their spare time to ensure that the town of Bourne still has a football club. Fundraising is obviously an integral part of running the club and it is hoped that over the coming months, the events that the club are putting on will be supported by the town. Please see below/ attached for further information. It has been all change at Bourne Town Football Club over the Summer with the departure of long serving Darren Munton. A household name at the club, Darren has taken a step back from his managerial role to become joint chairman with Steve Elger. Steve and Darren are both Bourne Town through and through and it is hoped that this new dynamic duo can push the club forward and out of the doldrums of recent years. The football club would like to take this opportunity to thank its many sponsors, both past and present, as without the support of local businesses, the club would not be here. A special thank you to the Len Pick Trust who gave a grant which allowed the club to upgrade its facilities to meet the standards required by the FA for the level of football that Bourne Town needs to be

playing at to make the club viable. It is hoped that this season will be the beginning of a new era at the club with the introduction of Raff Mazzarella as manager. Raff has brought in some talented youngsters from the local area meaning that although the average age of the playing squad has fallen, the standard of football has not. The blend of youth and experience has produced some exciting games so far this season with the best still to come as the players gain experience from playing with each other. If you are free on a Saturday afternoon or one evening in the week, you should pop down and see the Wakes. With cheap entry and a well stocked bar at more than reasonable prices, what better way to spend a couple of hours!

Upcoming fundraising events Thursday October 16th – Quiz night Teams of four - £5 per person including buffet. Doors open at 7 for 7.30 start. Property Fraud Many people worry about a thief stealing their car or the money in their online bank account, but not many people give much thought to protecting their most valuable asset - their property! Property fraud can happen in many ways, but usually a fraudster will impersonate a homeowner and forge documents to persuade the Land Registry to transfer the title into their name. They then use the property to raise a mortgage from a bank … and then disappear with the money. The Land Registry advise that there is an increased risk of fraud when a property: • is empty or has been bought to let, • the owner is spending time abroad or is absent, • the owner is infirm or in a nursing or care home, • has no mortgage, • is unregistered.

are up to date. You can register up to three different addresses. If the Land Registry receives an application regarding your property, they may write to you about it. If your details are not up to date, they won’t be able to contact you and stop any potential fraud. The form to update your details can be down-loaded from the Land Registry. A restriction can be registered on your property, which makes sure that the Land Registry will not register a sale or a mortgage, unless a solicitor or conveyancer has certified that the person who has signed the deed is the registered owner. This could help to prevent a fraudster forging your signature.

So, how do you protect your most valuable asset? Firstly, you should make sure your property is registered at the Land Registry. If you are in any doubt, speak with your solicitor and they will be able to advise you.

The Land Registry has launched a helpline for anyone concerned that their property might be subject to a fraudulent sale or mortgage Tel: 0300 006 7030

If your property is registered, you should make sure your contact details at the Land Registry

Halloween Thrills

sally@discoveringbourne.co.uk

By Eloise Preen

It was a disturbing scene around the witching hour as owls screeched and music played loudly, continuously vibrating into the nearby wood. Crowds of youngsters dressed as hairraising, eerie spooks gathered ready to celebrate their Halloween in style. Every few seconds, scintillating lights took over the mystic wood as a flash of lightning menaced overhead. Several bonfires slowly burned pitifully in the shadows. Embers from the ash-filled fires started to tremor as the thunder cracked in the still, leaden sky. Forlorn clouds lurked around the wood, waiting patiently for the right time to let out the silent tears they had been trying to shed for the past few hours but had managed to hold back. However, they could not wait any longer as drops of rain began to pelt down and ricochet off the nearby trees; nature was at its strongest. As the rain set in, the zombie-dressed party-goers remained oblivious to their surroundings, stopping only as a crack as loud as a bullet came from overhead. “Wow! Did you hear that?” said one before cracking open another beverage. The party carried on. None of the crowd seemed to suspect anything awful would happen and why would it? It was only Halloween… Suddenly the mist began to thicken and the sky turned an eerie black. A piercing scream vibrated around the wood. Faces full of bewilderment and surprise lit up as the lightning threatened overhead only to be faced with an embarrassed looking young girl being chased around by her over-excited best friend. A sudden rise in noise signaled to others there was nothing to worry about as the incident was soon forgotten and the party raged on. A few metres away, a commotion was starting to occur. Two young girls looked deathly pale as they stared at their mobile phones. “Do you think this is a hoax?” the ashen-faced teenager said to her friend. “I… I… don’t know came the reply” as a text flashed up at them declaring something awful would happen if they stayed in the wood and didn’t act fast. Word got around quickly and so did the texts. Worried, panicked faces set off a domino effect as scores of partygoers started to receive similar messages. A storm of ringtones and beeps echoed around the wood as partygoers fled and the organiser decided to shut the celebration down. As the crowds dispersed, a sea of paper cartons and banners liquefied into sheets of black sludge like a giant tongue had swept down and left them there to rot like corpses. A gush of wind was the only sound singing quietly around the desolate wood. Suddenly, a familiar ringtone rang out as an abandoned phone lay pathetically in the sodden ground, only lighting up sporadically with the vivid message: “Happy 20

Halloween”.

Ready for

Hallowe’en on October 31st?

What’s that all about then? Hallowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows' Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. “Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en. It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

Bourne and District Neighbourhood Watch Association. Annual General Meeting October 7th 2014 - at Bourne Fire Station at 7.30pm

The meeting offers an opportunity for all Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators and members to get together to elect their officers for the coming year, as well as to meet representatives of the police, to discuss local policing matters. Members of the public are more than welcome to attend. You may wish to find out more about what “Neighbourhood Watch” is, and how the police support its operation, or you may be considering creating one in your locality. There is clear evidence that a local group of people watching out for one another can make a significant contribution to security, safety and, ultimately, peace of mind. Many members have also commented that a Neighbourhood Watch group can help social relationships flourish, making the area a more pleasant place in which to live. If you have any issue that you wish to raise, either with the Association or with the police, you will have the opportunity to do so. Please come along and find out more. You will be most welcome. 22

Volunteers Required - Get a Glow at the Red Cross Shop! Ever wondered what it must be like to do some voluntary work? What’s it like to stand on the other side of a shop counter and deal with the public? What about getting that glow of satisfaction when you’ve done something really worthwhile and helped others much less fortunate than yourself? Well, here’s your chance to answer these questions for yourself! The British Red Cross Shop in North Street, Bourne is seriously short of volunteers right now and the shop manager, Amanda Stoneman, would love to hear from you if you are committed and reliable, and over the age of 18. Without a full rota of shop assistants, this vitally important source of revenue for the British Red Cross, and all their fantastic projects, would face serious difficulties in selling their designer and vintage clothes, books, gifts and furniture items. Come on, give it a shot. You’ll never know how that glow really feels unless you try! Just pop in for a chat or contact Amanda on 01778 426452.

New Physiotherapist Joins the Pulse Team Jo Sunner is extremely pleased to welcome Keith Openshaw to the very popular Pulse Practice in Bourne. Keith has worked, along with Jo, at the Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough for the past ten years, as the Head of Physiotherapy. " Keith Openshaw is a HPC registered and Chartered Physiotherapist, with a wealth of medical experience,” Jo enthused, “and I am delighted that he has decided to set up in private practice, here in Bourne, as we do lack practitioners with hospital experience.” Keith was the Physiotherapy Manager at the Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough, during which time he was also the Lead Physiotherapist for Ramsay Health Care UK. He brings a broad depth of knowledge to the practice, having a long and interesting career which has spanned both the NHS and the private health sector. Amongst the posts which he has held are Lead Physiotherapist and Clinical Governance Manager for Boots PLC, Manager of the

Centre for Clinical Exercise in London and the physiotherapist for Oldham Rugby League Club. He is, amongst other things, a qualified acupuncturist, with many qualifications in manual therapy. Whilst in charge at the Fitzwilliam Hospital Physiotherapy Department, he had a very close relationship with both the consultants and the referring GPs. As part of his clinical duties, he consulted on the setup of the Triage service, working as part of this for several years in an “Extended Scope” capacity. Furthermore, he is able to screen patients for serious pathology, and refer for MRI imaging and is able to deal with musculoskeletal injuries and post-operative rehabilitation. Keith has dealt with all the local GPs and will now be offering the same high standard of care as a member of Pulse Practice team in Bourne. Keith can be contacted on 01778 426000.

Baston Goes Back to the Blitz The sun smiled brightly on Baston as the village took a time-trip back to the 1940’s at their annual “Baston in the Blitz” event on September 7th. With many villagers and visitors entering into the spirit, by dressing in period uniform or costume, by late morning the playing fields resembled a scene from Foyle’s War. The picture was completed by a strong contingent of American G.I. re-enactors with their interesting array of military vehicles, and a large selection of vintage cars, caravans, tractors and lorries of the period. The event was formally opened by “Prime Minister, Winston Churchill”, who delivered one of his stirring wartime speeches. Whilst the event-goers enjoyed the sun, they were entertained throughout the day by the hit songs of the 1940’s, sung by Lola Lamour, George Formby and Ian Rose. There were many stall-holders present, offering a variety of vintage wares for sale. The event was fully catered with a licensed bar. The icing on the cake was the lateafternoon flypast by a Spitfire and Hurricane of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight that had the large crowd of some 1,800 visitors waving and cheering enthusiastically.

• “Baston in the Blitz” 2015 will be held on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August.

Bumper Pumpkin Crop Fills Bill’s Garage! In a secret location, close to the centre of Bourne, there stand on racks, some of the largest pumpkins ever seen. Averaging well in excess of 25 kilos each, these monsters just loiter menacingly, as if to challenge anyone to try and lift them and take them away. But they can be removed, as local market entrepreneur, Billy Pauley, was eager to point out, likening the beast in his grasp to “more than a bag o’ tates!” Grown by Thurlby grower, Pip Grummitt, this wonderful harvest is for sale on Bourne Market, Thursdays and Saturdays, but can be seen, lying in wait, close to Billy’s house on Meadowgate. Guided tours are available on request. Get your Hallowe’en pumpkin now, before the racks collapse under the enormous weight!

Small but perfectly formed discover the Islands of

Malta and Gozo Blessed with up to ten hours of sunshine a day throughout the summer, and mild winters, Malta is a wonderful choice for either a short cultural break away, or a tailor-made tour, exploring the island and perhaps hopping across to its sleepy, sister-island of Gozo. Amble around the magical city of Valletta and explore its beautiful, honey-coloured buildings and remarkable historical architecture; sample the many restaurants, shops and cafes scattered down the narrow backstreets and along the picturesque harbour fronts - the capital of Malta is perfect for a short city break. Valletta is a true reflection of this island nation’s chequered past. The city successfully combines the ancient with the modern, and cobbled streets are dotted with charming cafes and wine bars. Museums and art galleries are here in abundance and a visit to St John’s Cathedral is a must, as is a stroll around the harbour, often described as one of the grandest and most beautiful in Europe. Valletta holidays radiate character and history at every turn, and it is easy to see why it has captivated the hearts of so many over the years, from royalty and heads of state to poets and artists. Nearby is the bustling town of St. Julian’s, renowned for its array of fantastic restaurants and vibrant nightlife. It is hard to believe that this was once just a small, sleepy fishing village. Our hotels here are modern, sophisticated and luxurious, making it ideal for a long weekend away in the sun. For the more adventurous, why not combine a few nights in Valletta or St. Julian’s with some time relaxing in the timeless mediaeval hilltop town of Mdina, known as the ‘Silent City’? Here you can explore the stunning Baroque architecture of this

ancient, walled town. Gozo is a pretty island with some beautiful beaches, fantastic water sports opportunities and stunning scenery. Just a short hop from Malta, it is ideal for a relaxing break after spending some time exploring the many historical sights in Malta, or simply for a chilled out holiday, away from it all. It is a mere 45 minutes’ ferry ride from Malta, making it ideal for a twin-centred holiday. I feature some gorgeous hotels in Gozo, each with its own style and personality, to suit all tastes and budgets. Gozo is a tiny island just nine miles long and six miles wide, making it so easy to explore. Visit the beautiful beaches, such as the famous, red-sandy beach of Ramla; marvel at the famous Azure Window; enjoy long coastal walks with the most breath-taking views; watch the local craftsmen at work in the pretty village of Ta’Dbiegi, and enjoy the local delicacies in the many delightful restaurants that are dotted around the island. NewFish on theBlock! “Pilot Fish” move into Manning Road, Bourne Meeting the charming Mr Richard Jones, (Managing Director of newly-arrived Bourne firm, Pilot Fish) for the first time recently, I was hardly expecting to be hearing about the habits of our good friend, “Naucrates ductor”! If a company’s name is designed to create an impact and leave a lasting impression, then the choice of “Pilot Fish”, (Naucrates ductor) must rank highly, on a par with F.C.U.K. you could say. Interpreting the analogy thus - We have the small, yet very hard-working Pilot Fish, (an independent firm of experienced accountants, Richard with his Finance Manager, Deborah Short) swimming in the waters which are inhabited by the enormous, nasty sharks, (financial institutions, including the regularly pilloried, “big banks”). The task of the Pilot Fish is to lead other small creatures in those choppy waters, to find security and food, (swim forward… the small firm, looking for help, advice and, particularly, financial assistance). Clever, eh? Following a very successful career as Finance Director with a range of local firms, large and small, Richard has wide experience of advising and re-structuring companies, and can now, (having set up Pilot Fish two years ago, in Deeping) offer the same service, now as an independent operator. The aim is to help small businesses, who may lack a Finance Director, navigate their way through the “treacherous waters” of the commercial world. Clearly, without a strong, sustainable cash flow, any business will be in serious trouble. Pilot Fish wish to enable that business to raise finance, with their “Commercial Finance Broker Service”. Without wanting to blow their own trumpet, (hard to visualise for a fish, I know!) Pilot Fish claim that, “with access to hundreds of lenders…time and again we prove to our clients that we can secure funding where others fail”.

The recent increase, to a total of 250, the amount of lenders on Pilot Fish’s books, gives Richard cause for much optimism. “We’re not just giving financial advice as consultants – we’re able to get the cash to where it’s needed – to those businesses wanting to develop or make acquisitions”, he confirmed. More puns about Richard’s rivals “floundering”, their not having a “sole”, or the “tide turning” in his favour, I shall avoid! Suffice to say - good guy, good business sense, and good for the town! Welcome, Pilot Fish! • More info can be found at www. pilotfishpartnership.co.uk or call 01778 309777

|Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings” Fraud is an act of deception, intended for personal gain or to cause a loss to another party, and can be very upsetting to those who fall victim. There are many different types of fraud, far too many to mention here. However, below are some of the more common frauds. Bank account fraud has

occurred if transactions you haven’t made show up on your bank statement. It can happen as a result of identity theft, when cards or bank account information has been stolen. ATM (cash machine) fraud occurs when a fraudster uses a device to capture your card information as you are withdrawing money from an ATM. Usually, this will be a card ‘skimming’ device that reads your card, and a small camera to record your PIN as you type it in. Once they have these details, fraudsters can take money from your account or even create a clone of your card for their own use. If you see anything suspicious, report it to the bank (or, if not possible, the police) immediately. Always cover the keypad as you type your PIN, wherever you are. You don’t know who is watching! The courier scam was well covered by Eileen Le Voi in last month’s edition, so I will not cover it again here. Remember, though, that your bank and the police will NEVER, EVER ask you for your PIN number. Dating fraud is when you think you’ve met your perfect partner online. Gradually, you develop a relationship through e-mails, instant messaging, texting and phone calls. They may even exchange photos with you, and some may be sexually explicit. The person you’ve developed a relationship with is not who they say they are, and may be part of a criminal gang. Once they’ve gained your trust, they

ask for money for a variety of emotive reasons, such as illness or the loss of loved ones or property. Once you send them money, the fraudsters will keep coming back with more reasons to send them more money! Are you a victim of dating fraud? Do they ask you lots of questions about yourself, but don’t tell you much about themselves? Do they quickly start calling you by a pet name? Do they want to communicate with you through instant messaging and texts, rather than through the dating website or chat room where you met? Do they avoid answering basic questions about where they live and work? Have they asked you to send them money? Trust your instincts. If you are suspicious, break off all contact immediately and report it to Action Fraud as well as the web site or chat room operator.

Key tips to avoid being scammed:

• Burn or shred anything with your name, address and financial details on it, before throwing it out. • Never give out personal or financial information to a cold caller and never reveal any passwords, login details or account numbers. • If you are concerned about the source of a call, hang up and call your bank back on the legitimate phone number printed on your bank statements – from a different phone! • Check your statements carefully and report anything suspicious to the financial institution concerned. • If you’re expecting a bank/credit card statement or bank card and it doesn’t arrive, tell your bank or credit card company immediately. • If your card is lost or stolen, call your bank immediately. Keep the phone number in your phone or purse/wallet. • If you move house, always get Royal Mail to re-direct your post. • Get regular copies of your credit report from a credit reference agency such as Experian, Callcredit or Equifax. • If the fraud involves a known offender, or they are still in the area, call the police. The Metropolitan Police have produced a booklet advising on how to prevent fraud, which can be downloaded online at http://www.met.police.uk/docs/ little_book_scam.pdf Have a look at Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk/ or call 0300 123 2040.

|Editor’s Tip (ple) - SLOE GIN No doubting, one of my favourite sights of this time of the year is the crop of sloe berries, to be found on the blackthorn bush. Old country folklore would say that a bumper harvest of sloes is a sure sign of a long and bitterly cold winter ahead – the optimist in me, however, just sees a larger than usual supply of delicious sloe gin! Add “Sloe gin” to Favourites. Making sloe gin is a slow, but not laborious task. There’s no cooking required, just patience, as the sloes steep in the gin, for upwards of nine weeks.

Ingredients

250g sloes : 175g caster sugar : 1 litre gin

Method

Available from

SANDALLS BUTCHERS

1. Prick the tough skin of the sloes all over with a clean needle and put in a large sterilised jar. I prefer to deep-freeze the berries, once I’ve gathered and washed them, though. This breaks open the skin and saves time and damaged fingers! 2. Pour in the sugar and the gin, seal tightly and shake well. 3. Store in a cool, dark cupboard and shake every other day for a week. Then shake once a week for at least two months. 4. Strain the sloe gin through muslin into a sterilised bottle.

Wondering about Christmas presents already?

• Visit Harrison and Dunn’s fabulous emporium in North Street, Bourne. • Gather some of their collection of glass bottles, some with cork stoppers, others with the old “pop bottle” metal contraptions. They stock several different sizes and shapes. • Decant the rich, ruby, sloe gin carefully, ensuring quality is maintained by frequent testing. • Wrap your gifts and savour the glow!

Something to Celebrate… Lincolnshire Day …. is on October 1st and marks the anniversary of the Lincolnshire Rising, a revolt by Catholics against the establishment of the Church of England by Henry VIII in 1536.

Pic by Jarrod Cotter The first official Lincolnshire Day was held in 2006, to commemorate the uprising, when the date was voted for by readers of “Lincolnshire Life” magazine and BBC Radio Lincolnshire listeners.

32

The day aims to encourage local people, often known as “Yellowbellies”, and those who have moved from the county, to honour the historical event, along with Lincolnshire’s traditions, its past and some aspects of its culture. Some people dress up in yellow, to celebrate the day, while others hold local events and decorate their workplaces with Lincolnshire flags.

The home of Lincolnshire sausages, plum bread, Batemans Brewery and Lincolnshire Poacher cheese, to name a few, Lincolnshire remains a rural county, renowned for its foods and drinks, distributed locally and across the UK. It is also home to the famous Red Arrows RAF display team, Lincoln Cathedral and the original copies of the Magna Carta (1215) and Charter of the Forest (1217), the only place to hold copies of both.

So why are we called “Yellow”….. or rather, “Yeller-bellies”? A yellowbelly (or yeller belly) is a person born in Lincolnshire. The origin of this nickname is disputed, and many explanations have been offered. These include: • The officers of the Royal North Lincolnshire Militia used to wear bright yellow waistcoats. • The uniforms of the old Lincolnshire Regiment were green with yellow facings. The fastenings of the uniform tunic, which were known as frogs, were also yellow. • A species of newt, frog or eel (there is disagreement on this point) found in the Lincolnshire Fens had yellow undersides. • It is a derogatory name, implying that the Fendwellers creep around in the mud, and so get yellow bellies. • Opium extracted from poppy heads, and taken to relieve malaria that was prevalent in the Fens in earlier centuries, turned the skin a shade of yellow. • Sheep grazing in mustard fields were dusted by pollen from the blossom that turned their undersides yellow. Alternatively, the long under wool of sheep grazing in the Lincolnshire Wolds became discoloured by the yellow clay. (Neither of these can be considered a unique occurrence in Lincolnshire, however.) • Women traders on street markets in past times are reputed to have worn a leather apron with two pockets, one for copper and silver, and one for gold. At the end of a good day they would say they had 'a yellow belly' meaning they had taken a large number of gold sovereigns. • The expression is based on the old belief that

if a person born in Lincolnshire placed a shilling on their abdomen on retiring to bed and slept flat on their back all night, then the next morning the shilling would have turned into a gold sovereign. • The stage coaches that operated in Lincolnshire in times past had yellow body work. • A folk etymology says that the term originated from Elloe, the name of the rural deanery that serves the fen area of the Lincoln Diocese. This, in turn, took its name from the Saxon Wapentake which was referred to as “Ye Elloe Bellie” – “Elloe” meaning “out of the morass”, while “bel” was the Celtic word for “hole” or “hollow”. • Less reputable inhabitants of Cleethorpes may have engaged in a form of piracy. They took torches down to the beach on dark nights and used them to trick passing ships into sailing towards the lights, believing it to be the harbour. The ships would hit the shallow waters on the Cleethorpes coast and run aground, where they would be raided for their cargo. On one occasion, the locals are supposed to have believed they had lured a ship whose cargo had great value, but when they found the cargo, it was actually a vast amount of yellow flannel material. They could not be seen selling or using the cloth which they had stolen, so in order not to waste it, they made undergarments out of it, so many of the locals were soon in possession of flannel vests and became “yellow bellies”.

|Your Finances by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd “UFPLS” explained to help your pension planning Following last month’s article, I have been asked how someone could use the new retirement rules to use a pension to pay off their mortgage, without compromising their death benefits. This is a specific scenario and will not apply to everyone. Also - as I previously explained – a pension is designed to give you an income in retirement, so think carefully before using it for anything else, and ALWAYS take INDEPENDENT financial advice.

Scenario

Let’s assume you are approaching 60 years of age and considering cutting back on work over the next few years. You have a personal pension that you have built up a number of years previously, along with your current occupational scheme. You have a small mortgage that you want to pay off before retiring , with this gone you would be able to live comfortably on the income from your reduced hours until fully retiring in about five years, when you will be entitled to benefits from your final salary scheme.

Freedom and Choice in pensions

You have heard about the pension changes announced in the Budget and want to know if any of the changes will be of benefit to you in the short term.

Question

Can I pay off my mortgage and reduce my hours without having to cease paying contributions to my occupational scheme? You want the personal pension residual benefits to go to your son on death your husband will receive substantial benefits from his own scheme.

Compromising benefits

Under current legislation you would struggle to get enough cash from your personal pension without compromising death benefits. You would need to use all of the benefits within the personal pension and take the maximum taxfree cash allowance and income. The process of moving funds from pre to post retirement is known as “crystallisation” this means that any death benefits

Main office: Magnus House, 60 St. Leonards Street, Stamford, PE9 2HU Tel: 01780 761313 www.landmarkifa.co.uk Landmark are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Number: 225538 36

payable to your son would be taxed at 55%, whereas before retirement any death benefits are paid taxfree. The Government has stated that this tax rate will be reduced in April, but the new rate is not yet known. However if you wait until April 2015, you will be able to take an “Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum” (UFPLS) - an all-new way of taking pension monies. You can take 25% of this as tax-free cash and the residual as taxed income. You can then take the full amount to cover the mortgage, leaving the remainder of the pot in pre-retirement. It is worth noting that although this is a possibility and perfectly allowable the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have made it clear that pensions are for retirement and not designed to pay off existing debts

Annual allowance

You are concerned that you may restrict your employer and personal pension contributions in the future. By taking the UFPLS route, there are new restrictions in place about the maximum amount you can contribute to any money purchase pension scheme, which is reduced from £40,000 to £10,000 per year.

Conclusion

By waiting until April 2015, you will be able to access sufficient funds to pay off the mortgage, leaving the remainder of the fund in pre-retirement, so it can be left tax free to your son, should you die before accessing it. Bear in mind that by taking the new UFPLS there are disadvantages aside from the reduced annual contribution allowance, by using a lump sum to repay the mortgage you are reducing the amount available to provide you with income in the future. Again your overall financial situation may be better served in the long term by only making use of the tax free element of your pension.

Crown Jewellers

GlisteningBrighter

Than Ever!

Six years on from becoming established in Bourne, Crown Jewellers have recently made two important changes, ones which enthusiastic owner, Cathy Powell, feels will greatly benefit her clients. First, the steady increase in the volume of business at the North Street shop has enabled her to augment her team of skilled and experienced staff. Presently, this comprises Cathy’s son Matt, (a qualified goldsmith), Ola Woods, (a Diamond Grader Association Member), Sales Executive Dawn Hodson, and on a Saturday Charley Wilde. Enter now Fleur Philips (member of the institute of registered valuers).

The talented team ensures customers receive the best possible advice and attention to detail 40

Cathy feels confident that such a gathering of talents will mean the customers will be receiving the best possible advice and attention to detail, when looking for quality jewellery. The second benefit involves an inspired re-structuring of the interior of the shop itself. The small workshop becomes a private consultation room, where clients can now discuss their requirements in total privacy. The new workshop will give Matt a better working environment, plus scope for possible future expansion. The main advantage, however, is the way in which the introduction of a large settee and two comfortable armchairs on the actual shop floor creates a much more relaxed atmosphere. Already, customers are commenting on how much more pleasant it is to sit and relax whilst waiting for a small repair, a gift to be wrapped or to just sit and chat! A coffee table with local magazines and newspapers will shortly be added to this most pleasant of innovations. If that wasn’t enough, Crown Jewellers are

looking to install some new technology for early October which will revolutionise the way in which Matt operates in the workshop, and allowing him to work on more delicate refurbishments of older jewellery. It’s cutting edge technology, coming soon to Bourne. With the Christmas season fast approaching, Cathy is keen to be advising the potential buyers of jewellery in the area that, at Crown Jewellers, there is always something very special on offer. Besides the recognised names of famous brands, there is also a prestigious bespoke service, whereby Matt can create that individual piece, hand-crafted from your own design. For that special individual in your life, why not, therefore, go for something totally unique this year, and pay Cathy and her team a visit?

|Home & garden by Yasmin Chopin, local Interior Designer

Up-cycled, recycled, renovated, re-worked and repurposed

I

was working my way around the stands at a Trade Show, back in 2010, and I came across this interesting piece of old furniture, nestled amongst all the swish, polished, smooth clean lines of contemporary pieces. It was in an area called “Designers’ Block”, where I was expecting to see the weird and the wonderful - certainly not a battered old chest of drawers! Standing nearby was a young man who clearly wanted to talk, so I asked him his name. “Tom”, he said and he then introduced me to the piece of furniture. “This is Aschenputtel”, he went on, explaining that it was an experimental work, the result of a collaboration between him, (Thomas Forsyth), and Owen Gildersleeve. I was intrigued by the old silk ties that lined the top opening ‘drawer’ and the hand cut paper petals, now covered by a layer of clear perspex to preserve their beauty, that formed a drawer lining. I enjoyed hearing how some of the renovation was

Images of Aschenputtel - courtesy Thomas Forsyth really difficult and time-consuming and how it was intentional to leave the paintwork shabby. Since then, I have come across lots of up-cycled, recycled, renovated, re-worked and repurposed items, and I’m glad to see that ‘eco friendly’ and ‘sustainable’ principles are still very trendy. This piece has never left my imagination, however, and I think it was because it actually had a name. Is that silly? Plus, I’m a sucker for colour; these were outstandingly pretty petals, offering a lovely surprise when you opened the drawer - so much so, I wonder if I would ever have used it for storage! With Aschenputtel in mind, here are a few points about green design:1. Sustainability is the capacity to maintain a system for a long time, perhaps indefinitely, so we can utilise and replenish the planet’s resources responsibly. 2. Many items are over-designed and overengineered so we must ask the question, “Can it look good and do the job, but use less material?” 3. Although renovation, which protects and preserves, is not necessarily a cheaper option, it is right and proper to conserve the valuable and aesthetically important. 4. Recycling is concerned with saving resources and finding innovative uses for waste material. 5. Up-cycling brings something back to a useful life, possibly with a whole new purpose. |Technology Corner by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC How to Manage Duplicate Images and Files Almost all of us now utilise digital cameras for our photography. Many will then upload the images to their PCs and manipulate them, either by editing the images, renaming or moving them around. As a result we are often left with duplicate images spread across various folders. This can eat up valuable disk space but also make it difficult to manage our photo collections. Easy Duplicate Finder can help you with this, even better is that it is free for home users. To show it in action I have created a folder called Images and I’ve placed 89 images inside. I then created two folders; one containing ten duplicate images and the other five duplicate images that have had the filename changed.

The first thing to do is to download and install the program from www.easyduplicatefinder.com

Click on download to install and follow through the various windows that pop up entering NextAccept-Next-Next-Next-Install-Finish The tool will now be installed and icon will

appear on your PC desktop. Click on this to open (or select Run from the pop up window if still open). You now need to tell the tool what folders you want to search for duplicate images. This will vary by user but in most cases will be your user folder or your pictures folder. For this example I will use the Images folder I created for this test. Click Add Folder Select the folder/s you want to search Click Start Scan

EasyDuplicateFinder will now search those folders. In the result shown it has analysed the test folder and found 15 duplicate images. Ten of these that had the same file name and five that had been renamed. The latter is especially useful. The final stage is to click on Go Fix Them and you will be shown a summary of the results. You can export this list to a file for printing out or you can register EasyDuplicateFinder to delete the duplicates from within the tool (registration costs around ÂŁ30)

Discovering... ...Lady Godiva by Rex Needle

T

he connection between Lady Godiva and this town is tenuous to say the least and may depend more on fiction than fact but there is evidence that she did ride through the streets of Bourne on at least one occasion. Milady was an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry almost a thousand years ago in order to gain a remission of the oppressive taxation imposed by her husband on his tenants. The name Peeping Tom for a voyeur originates from later versions of this tale in which a man named Tom bored a hole in his shutters to watch her ride by and was reputedly struck blind. The link with Bourne is that Lady Godiva (10401080) was the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and by tradition the mother of Hereward the Wake who was born at the castle in Bourne and became a Saxon hero by opposing the Normans who eventually trapped and slayed him in Bourne Wood, although this account owes more to the imagination of Victorian novelists than it does to documentary proof. But Hereward remains our folk hero and was featured on a float in 1925 during one of the earliest fund raising events for the Butterfield Hospital in North Road, then a busy medical facility but always in need of cash to meet

60

running costs. This event evolved into a rag day and in the summer of 1929, the famous ride by Lady Godiva was staged on Saturday 6th July when crowds thronged the streets to catch a glimpse of her ladyship astride a horse, her face and features obscured by a wig with long hair, and although there had been much speculation about her identity, it was never revealed. The parade headed by the town band and including many other tableaux depicting historical subjects, was heartily cheered as it wound its way through the streets with helpers rattling collecting tins, raising the sum of £64 16s. 3d. [over £3,500 at today’s values]. “The hospital rag was an eminent success”, reported a local newspaper, “and the appeal to the general public to help with funds received a ready response.” The Butterfield Hospital was a popular charity at that time because few people were not touched by its activities, either through surgery and outpatient treatment or home visits, but closed in 1983 and is now used as a day care centre for the elderly.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Music by Aaron Beeken

Sons of Kal-el released their first video on 9th September 2014 by Full Scale Productions. We interviewed the band’s guitarist, Aaron Beeken (Head of Music at Bourne Academy), about the video: “we went for a classic 70’s vibe theme, filmed at the Apex building yard. The video captures the energy of us performing live. Performing the song live in the building yard symbolizes what we believe rock and roll is all about, and that is putting everything you have into the performance of music itself for your audience. There is a Ford Capri involved, and also an epic rock guitar solo scene; but for those that know me, what else would you really expect?” Their debut album Songs from The Phantom Zone was released earlier this year, and is highly recommended for fans of heavy rock bands like

Pearl Jam, Audioslave, and Avenged Sevenfold. This hard rock album features well-crafted songs such as Wasted Path, Last Goodbye and Vultures. Their sound is best described as Slash jamming with Pearl Jam in Skynyrd's swampy back yard; but you can stream it for free on Spotify to make your own judgment! The album is available on iTunes and Amazon through CLA Records LTD. After success fronting The More I See, vocalist Chad Sunderland set up the band with the guitarist of Proto Inferno, Aaron Beeken, and bassist Lee Churchill (also formerly of The More I See) in 2011, joined by MacieJMagic Nawrocki on drums and rhythm guitarist Ben Miles. The band members have previously been signed to SPV, Transcend Records and Universal Publishing, numerously performed with world No.1 guitarist Steve Vai, toured Europe, appeared on Scuzz TV, and have attained the BA (hons) Contemporary Music Degree at The Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM). Upcoming shows include ‘Rock For Ryder's Halloween Headbangers Ball’ on Saturday 1st November in Yaxley. This raises money for Sue Ryder, and is part of The More I See UK tour. Tickets, the video, and all links to the album are available at www. sonsofkal-el.com.

Firework Fiesta set to light up Peterborough Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Firework Fiesta, sponsored by Fusion Peterborough. The event, which takes place at the East of England Showground on Saturday 1st November, is the biggest of its kind in East Anglia. Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Peterborough and Peterborough Minster and Round Table, it has run for nearly 40 years, all proceeds being ploughed back into Peterborough-based charities and good causes - so far, a staggering £500,000! This year, funds are being raised for the Sue Ryder New Hospice at Thorpe Hall appeal, with building work starting this month. Daren Homewood, Head of Fusion Peterborough, said, “The funds raised are vital for local charities and good causes and we’re looking forward to another successful evening.” Rotary Club Member and event organiser, Colin Harrison commented that it was an influx of casualties in A&E on Bonfire Night that sparked the original idea for the Fiesta. The

venue offers free parking and a large viewing area, including the covered Grandstand and indoor areas. Gates open at 5pm with the parade of guys, and the bonfire being lit at 6pm. Live music, compered by Heart FM, fair rides, food outlets, trade and charity stalls provide great family entertainment. Advance purchase tickets : Adults- £7, Under 15s- £3, Under 2s-free “On the gate” tickets : Adults£10, Under 15s- £5. Tickets can be purchased from the Ticket Factory (credit cards accepted; £4 fulfilment fee applies). Call 01733 452336 or visit the ticket page at the event website: www.fireworkfiesta.com. Tickets will also be available from the following outlets in October (cash only): Van Hage Garden Centre, Queensgate Information Desk (upper ground floor), Peterborough Visitor Information Centre (Bridge Street). |Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram Welcome to my new feature on all things to do with motoring. I am writing this article just a few days ahead of giving a presentation to 150 Bourne Grammar School Year 12 students about road safety. Just how many years of driving those students will actually do is debatable, given the news on the Google “driverless car”! But until that time arrives, drivers still need to appreciate the responsibilities that come with driving safely on our roads. Much of my day-to-day work is attempting to develop “thinking” drivers. A good driver will consider how their style of driving affects others. The busy lifestyle we lead these days can often affect our attitude towards being considerate and safe, not just to our passengers but to all other road users around us. This includes the responsibility we all have to ensure that the vehicle we are driving is actually roadworthy.

Don’t let your tyres let you down – Life’s too precious!

A

s we cruise into the autumn with wetter days and head towards winter with lower temperatures, one such example is the importance of checking our tyres. The incorrect tyre pressure and/or tread depth can adversely affect stopping distances, traction, stability, comfort and even fuel economy. It is worth remembering that the actual surface area contact between the tyre and the road is no more than a C.D. cover (about the size of an outstretched adult hand for our younger readers who don’t know what a “C.D. cover” is). I can well

PE O W NO

appreciate that digging out the vehicle manual and checking tread depth and the tyre pressures on your vehicle may not be to everyone’s liking, so for the benefit of the “Discovering Bourne” readership, I ran a completely independent spot check with Bourne’s tyre specialists. Two businesses have responded positively to my request for a free, no-obligation tyre check of tread and pressure. Why not leave it to the experts, then, and contact either Trev’s Tyres (01778 426 381) or Bush Tyres (01778 753 098)?
