very warm welcome to this, our last edition of 2014. December has always been a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year. We can think about what we’ve achieved and all of those decisions we’ve made; those places we’ve visited and new friends who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and those new year resolutions are already in the planning stage! In the meantime, on behalf of all of the team here, my heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice and suggestions. All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2015 – good luck, and good health!

Claire x

Time for a new photo of your editor and his contribution to the “Movember” catalogue of hirsute horrors! Apparently, a month’s growth of upper lip hair can provide the means of retaining 30ml. of beer, before leaking the contents down the face of the owner. No comment! Anyway, “What’s the Christmas fayre looking like?” I hear you ask. As usual, wide and varied, with some serious achievements to read about this month – step forward Callum Byrne, Will Silver, Cherry Immink and the Bourne Academy award winners. Our usual advice providers, (covering aspects of health, the law, motoring, finance, holidays and protection against rogue traders) continue to inform wisely, whilst local dentist John Ogden gets to sit “In the Hot Seat”. C & J Supplies are featured, as Morton’s newest residents. With the small matter of Christmas only a few weeks away, the quiz takes on a festive look, whilst old chestnuts (sorry!) come out for their annual airing: n Good King Wenceslas used to love his pizza – Deep Pan, crisp and even. n Are Santa’s little helpers “subordinate clauses”? n Christmas – the time when we want our past forgotten, yet our present remembered. I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas, with good health and success on the way in 2015. Front cover designed by Bourne Academy.

C & J Supplies Ltd. Move to Key Morton Location!

Following the demise of both The King’s Head and The Lord Nelson, which used to stand alongside the A15 at Morton, it is encouraging to see a flurry of recent activity in the area nearby, in the shape of C & J Supplies Ltd. moving into the village. What is more encouraging, however, is to know that this is a very well-established, family run, professional locksmith security company, having re-located from Pointon. Their “Cultivating your security solutions since 1982” line gives the nod to their predominant business interests within the agricultural sector, over the last four decades. “Yes, we’ve done lots of work with farmers and commercial customers in and around the Bourne area”, ambitious Marketing Manager, Tom Richardson assures me, “but we are now starting to do more with residential customers”. This rehousing of the whole operation, (which includes a huge storage department, extensive workshop facilities, spacious offices and a soon-to-beestablished trade counter as part of the reception area) will provide the impetus to do just that. C & J Supplies can offer you a complete tailored service with a wide range of security solutions, including high security padlocks, door locks, safes, security chains and hasps. On the agricultural side, 4

D I S C O V E R I N G

they provide custom-built chemical stores, mini chemical safes, transportable chemical stores, tool chests and can even supply that shipping container you may have always been seeking! So, what’s in it for the householder, you may wonder? Tom’s own recent experience of moving house and inheriting a bunch of twenty-one keys, (all opening a number of door locks, with some duplicates thrown in) just made him more aware than ever of a better way forward for us all, when taking over a new property, or just increasing the level of security on our existing one. The solution is C & J’s fully patented, “Mul-T Lock” key system, where one master key serves all door locks and padlocks. For a commercial application, C & J can also create a “master key suite”, giving you full control over the movement of people within a building or buildings, to provide accessibility as and when required. The master key cannot be duplicated without the owner’s permission, enabling an even more effective security solution. It might just be a key that you need cutting or a new padlock for your shed. Why not make use of the large car park, pop in, and see what the friendly staff can provide? You’ll be in safe hands!

Bourne Woods Needs You! Bourne Woods Group set sights on achieving 500 volunteers by February 2015 Did you know your local Woods are over 1,000 years old and once stretched as far as Northamptonshire? In 1086, the Woods were owned by Oger the Breton, a French knight with pots of money and bags of influence (despite sounding like a character from a children’s movie!) These days, the Woods are owned by the Forestry Commission and promoted by The Friends of Bourne Wood – a local community group with lots of enthusiasm and bags of energy … but in need of volunteers! That’s why the Friends Group has identified a target of achieving 500 volunteers on their books by February 2015, and is actively seeking support from the local community. Group Secretary, Sarah Roberts explains: “We were really disappointed to have to cancel our popular Santa in the Woods event this year, but we just can’t put these events on if we don’t have enough people to help on the day. What we’re looking for are people who are prepared to offer a few hours of their time, just to help out at events. This could be anything from physical help putting up a marquee and lifting tables, to running stalls and guiding visitors. Our plan is to operate a rota system, so volunteers 10

D I S C O V E R I N G

will only need to help for a few hours on the day.” The next major event in the Group’s calendar is an Easter Activities Day on 6th April, with a trail through the Woods and other attractions currently in planning. If you can help and commit a few hours of your time for this and other events, you’ll be securing the future of the Woods and ensuring local residents continue to enjoy one of our most precious resources. If you would like to put your name down and volunteer, please email your contact details to roberts.sarahm@gmail.com and let her know whether you’d prefer to help with physical work or visitor support. And if you’re still not sure, take a look at the website, www. friendsofbournewoods.org.uk A final word from Sarah Roberts: “We have lots of ideas for events next year but are always delighted to receive suggestions, donations and offers of support in addition to volunteers. If you run or work for a local business and can contribute to our community events in other ways, please get in touch. We look forward to welcoming you as a Friend of Bourne Woods!”

Method: Place all the ingredients into a large saucepan (not aluminium) and gently heat, stirring occasionally so the sugar does not stick. You’ll need 10 minutes preparation time, followed by 20 minutes cooking time. Do not boil, or the mulled wine will lose its kick, as the alcohol evaporates! Using a ladle, carefully pour the wine into sturdy glasses. Include a wedge or two of fruit, and a prune, in each glass.

| Mayor Bob Russell's bits

I was greatly honoured, in my role as Mayor, to be asked to participate in the town’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations. What a day and for once the weather was kind! My first duty was to be part of the group taking the salute as the parade passed, and what a parade it was! It was moving to have those of the older generation with their memories, but mixed with pride at the involvement of so many young people, through their membership of youth organisations. The official parade was followed by a very large group, again of all ages, representing the people of Bourne. During the service at the Memorial Gardens the presentation and demeanour of the young people, together with the respect they showed, was most moving and bodes well for the future. On a lighter note, as we approach Christmas, I am looking forward to the festivities. My diary already contains invitations to carol services, concerts and lunches. I am going to have to work hard to keep the waist line under control! May I take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

monthly advice from Double and Megson

The Court of Protection The Court of Protection is often referred to as the “Secret Court”, because hearings are often held in private. If you become incapable of looking after your own personal or financial matters, no one has automatic authority to deal with your affairs. If you do not have a valid Power of Attorney, then an application to the Court of Protection may need to be made to appoint a Deputy. There are two different types of Deputyship: “Property and Affairs”, and “Personal Welfare”. A Property and Affairs Deputyship is the most common form of Deputyship. The application process involves providing the court with detailed information regarding the circumstances and finances of the person who lacks capacity, as well as the person applying to be the Deputy. The Court of Protection then assesses the suitability of each Deputy from the information provided on the application forms. The application process can be quite lengthy and expensive.

18

D I S C O V E R I N G

The court are usually happy to appoint a family member as the Deputy, but this is not always the case. They can appoint an independent professional Deputy if they believe this to be in the best interests of the person who lacks capacity. The Court of Protection will make a court order naming the Deputy. The order will also set out the authority and powers that the Deputy has, when dealing with the property and financial affairs of the person without capacity. A security bond has to be put in place by the Deputy, and the level of the security bond will depend on the level of funds which the Deputy is looking after. As a safeguard, the Deputy has to submit annual accounts to the court to show they are acting in the best interests of the person lacking capacity.

Dare-devil Dena Dices With Death Reaching the “Big Five-Oh!” can have strange effects on some people- but how about risking life and limb three times in as many months? Dena Edis, owner of Bourne’s premier gift shop, Concept, decided to try something a little different, when her milestone was reached. The adventures began with her hurtling a mile down a zip-wire in a North Wales slate quarry, (some Mother’s Day present, eh?) Then came a “wing walk” in late August, strapped to the top of a bi-plane, raising over £400 for the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance and Cancer Research along the way. Finally, (for the moment, at least!) Dena rode pillion as a high-powered motorbike from the Ron Haslam Racing Team screamed four laps around the Donington Park circuit at speeds approaching 200mph! Now safely returned and stocking up to face the oncoming Christmas period in her North Street shop, Dena looks back fondly on her adrenalinpacked summer. 20

Busy Times for the Salvation Army Recent weeks have seen a flurry of activity in the Salvation Army in Bourne and two new initiatives have become established for the benefit of the residents of Bourne and neighbouring villages. Captain Wendy Brown enthuses over how the regular Tuesday Coffee Morning session at Meadow Court has gone from strength to strength, with over 30 residents now making it their weekly rendezvous. This has been particularly welcome as all social activities had been temporarily wound up at Meadow Court for a while. Now, the residents have somewhere to meet and, in fact, a number of them are now also attending the Thursday Club at the nearby Salvation Army Hall, where a cooked meal is available. Secondly, it is most heartening to hear that the building which used to house Bourne Library in South Street has now been returned to the people. From mid-November, this will become the Salvation Army furniture outlet, where all manner of second-hand furniture and small electrical items will be on sale to the general public. Opening hours are Thursday (12:00 – 4:00pm) and Saturday (9:00am – 12:00.) All revenue raised from the sale of these donated items will be used to fund future community-based projects in the town.

Charity Bike Ride to Hit Bourne Keep Saturday December 13th, between 8am and 9am, free to greet a well-deserving posse of cyclists who are passing through Bourne en route from North Lincolnshire, 130 miles to Northampton in eight hours…….hopefully! Humberside Airport firefighter, Aaron Dawson, aged 28, and a group of like-minded rugby fanatics are in the process of raising a considerable sum of money, in memory of young Luis Ghaut, the twelve year old mascot at Northampton Saints, who tragically died in September from Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer which affects bones and soft tissue. Seeing Luis bravely lead the Saints out at the Premiership Final in May, with only months to live, was inspiration enough to get Aaron and friends on to their bikes and pedal furiously to watch their heroes play Treviso on December 13th at 3pm. Just to shout your encouragement would help – to put loads of cash into their tins would be better though! Aaron is even keen on anyone joining his posse, either all of the way to Northampton, or just to their next rest stop in Oakham. Just turn up on the day if you’re up for it. Meanwhile, please take a look at Aaron’s donation page at www.justgiving.com/Aaron-Dawson1 to see more on his fantastic efforts. Good luck lads….. and “Up the Tigers”, (oops, I mean the Saints!)

Fighting Back – Bourne’s Cherry Immink

Tells her Story

Having discovered I was suffering from breast cancer in 2008, and then being treated so brilliantly by Peterborough Hospital, made me determined to fight back against this awful disease. I felt I needed to do something in return for all the care I had received, so my husband and I decided to organise a Charity Ball. It was an enormous success, as was the next one and the next! After three, I thought it was time for a break … until early this year that is, when I was finally discharged. So to celebrate that long-awaited piece of fantastic news, what better way than to resurrect the Charity Ball? It was a real pleasure organising the evening and we had lots of fun and games, an auction and a raffle. We had a live band to dance the night away. I had never imagined raising as much as we have done over the years and we are so delighted to have done so, with the help and support of our family and friends. We would also like to thank the local shops and businesses in and around Bourne who have been very kind with their donations for all of the charity evenings. This year’s Charity Ball raised a staggering £5,000, taking the overall sum from all four events to a mind-boggling £30,000! This will be our last

Charity Ball and without having such a supportive family I could never have fought cancer in this way and got through it all.

Little Bees Buzzing Nicely!

Four months on, we now have a steady flow of regulars, as well as new weekly faces, and have hosted parties and special events each month. We have chosen to stay open during the school holidays, providing activities for older siblings, whilst still having the group open for new parents, and we run a regular craft group in these sessions, as well as stories, songs and parachute games. Our most recent event was a fancy dress Hallowe’en Party, where we enjoyed spooky cakes, themed crafts and party games. The ‘pin the bowtie on Mr Skeleton’ was especially popular! All the children are welcome to join in Lunch Club, so why not bring a pack-up and join us? Our Christmas party will be on December 19th. For all information, join us on Facebook, (www. facebook.com/groups/littlebeesbourne) or online at www.littlebeesbourne.co.uk. We are located at Busy Bees Nursery and Pre-School, 14-18 Manor Lane, Bourne PE10 9PQ, and are open 10am-12.30pm every Friday.

A Huge Thank You

Local Bourne Academy year 11 student, Phoebe Kirtland, was invited to Smart Tec Embroidery Ltd on Cherry Holt Road, Bourne to see her t-shirts printed that had been kindly sponsored by local businesses and organisations. Deepings Home Minding Services, Landmark IFA Ltd, NFU Mutual, Bourne Business Chamber, Smart Tec Embroidery Ltd and Rotary Club of Bourne have all generously sponsored their logo at a cost of £25 each. In addition, Jerry Bamford of Smart Tec Embroidery Ltd kindly agreed to supply and print 4 copies of the t-shirt free of charge for Phoebe to wear at all her remaining fundraising events and in Ecuador next summer. Phoebe needs to raise £4,480 to get to Ecuador where she will be helping causes such as community building repairs and refurbishments, teaching English to children, helping set up small businesses and enterprises as well as conservation of indigenous wildlife. The t-shirt sponsorship has raised £175 towards this total and so far Phoebe has raised £2000. Phoebe will be selling quality handmade gift items and Christmas decorations at Bourne's own Christmas Market on Saturday 29th November 10am -7pm as well as at Stamford Christmas Market on Sunday 30th November 9:30am -4:30pm in the Multi Charity Christmas Card Shop, St. John's Church, Red Lion Square, Stamford. Phoebe will also have a table at Bourne Westfield Academy's Christmas Fair on Friday 5th December 5-7:30pm.

| In the hot seat

John Ogden Dentist, Traveller, Hopeless Golfer It is almost 25 years since “The Choc Box” in West Street, Bourne, was transformed from a sweet shop into a dental surgery. At the helm then, and still drilling and filling, is this month’s Hot Seat “volunteer”, Mr John Ogden, B.D.S. Arriving in Bourne in 1983 with wife Maggi, having left Sheffield University, complete with dentistry degree, John took over the dental practice housed above what is now Fenland Carpets in the Market Place. The move along West Street, with the help of partners Bill Welch and Nick Maxey and “all of his fantastic staff” has enabled the flourishing practice to expand considerably, in response to Bourne’s growth, to today’s complement of eleven dentists. Neither of John and Maggi’s children, James or Lucy, followed him into the profession and both now live in London. An inveterate fitness fan, John’s cycling and trekking tours have taken him across much of the U.K. along with far-flung Viet-Nam, Cuba and Jordan. He now thrashes his way around Toft, where he insists on “getting his money’s worth out of his green fees, by getting in more shots than most!” 1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?

“I was born in Salford and so can claim genuine Manchester United allegiance. I had a very happy childhood, just “playing out”, something I think a lot of kids miss out on these days. I went on a school skiing trip at 14 to Switzerland and just loved it – the fresh air, the mountains and the fun of skiing. I was hooked and have been back many times since.”

2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

“When I went to senior school, my first-year form teacher was a very enthusiastic man called Mr. Ken Veitch. He really believed in us all, could be strict, but he really taught you that anything was achievable if you put the effort in.”

3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? “Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham. There would be more food for me!” 24

D I S C O V E R I N G

4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS?

“Conscientious, dedicated, reliable, alive and bald.”

5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

“I have been very lucky to have spent just over the last thirty years, treating and meeting a lot of really good, interesting people from all walks of life. Bourne has an amazing cross-section of people living in it. As my origins are in the North-West, though, it would be good if Bourne had some hills, but I don’t suppose they are going to suddenly just appear!”

6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?

“a) Be enthusiastic about life – work hard, play hard and get the most that you want out of life – it’s all achievable. b) Enjoy your hair while you’ve got some!”

| Your health by Jo Sunner BSc. DO. MMSM. Osteopath

“Trigger finger” The symptoms of trigger finger (or thumb) include pain and a funny clicking sensation when the finger or thumb is bent. Pain usually occurs when the finger or thumb is bent and straightened. The clicking sensation occurs when a nodule forms on the pulley ligaments. With the finger straight, the nodule is at the far edge of a surrounding ligament. When the finger is flexed, the nodule causes the clicking sensation. If the nodule becomes too large it may get stuck at the near edge. The nodule cannot move back through the tunnel, and the finger is locked in the flexed trigger position.

How do you identify the condition? The diagnosis of trigger finger and thumb is usually quite obvious on physical examination. Usually, a palpable click can be felt as the nodule snaps on movement. If the condition is allowed to progress, the nodule may swell to the point where it gets caught and the finger is locked in a bent, or flexed, position. No special tests or X-rays are required.

Some of the exercises you’ll begin to do are to help strengthen and stabilize the muscles and joints in the hand. Other exercises are used to improve fine motor control and dexterity. You’ll be given tips on ways to do your activities while avoiding extra strain.

When triggering has been present for more than four months, non-surgical treatment is usually short-lived. You may get some relief of symptoms with a cortisone injection. If you wear a splint, the nodule may shrink, giving relief and a free range of movement. Surgery is a last resort.

What can be done? We get good results applying heat treatments, soft-tissue massage, and hands-on stretching to help with a free range of motion.

Enjoy a colourful

Christmas!

can even go full out with neon in place of the traditional red and green. Colourful baskets make lovely gifts in their own right but fill them with goodies and you have a new take on the traditional Christmas stocking. If you prefer simple style day to day make colour the impact on your Christmas table. The choice of blue and red really pops on fresh white. I buy white china so that all pieces work together and because I tend to break the odd piece now and then! I also love to buy prettily shaped china pieces when I trawl flea markets and antique shops; if it’s white I know I can use it any time of year. In this table setting you can see even the Christmas crackers don’t steal the show. I like the baubles as a centrepiece – very effective but easy and quick.

O

nline handmade and vintage marketplace Etsy has identified four key trends for Christmas 2014 by analysing new products being added to the 1 million+ active Etsy shops. I’ve taken the four ideas and developed them on the website blog so you can decide which one would suit your style this year (see more at www.YasminChopin. com). The four trends are:Happy and Bright Subtle Shine Natural Scandi Textured Textiles The first one, ‘happy and bright’, is especially for those who love colour and want to decorate with a difference this festive season. Incorporate lots of colour including bright pinks, oranges and yellow, which work well together and you

Good neighbours stop rogue traders Are you a good neighbour? Do you want to protect vulnerable residents from rogue traders? As part of the National Consumer Week 2014 (3-7th November), residents in Bourne were being urged to look out for rogue doorstep traders preying on elderly and vulnerable neighbours. With as many as 170,000 incidents of doorstep crime occurring nationally each year, the National Consumer Week 2014 ‘Good Neighbours Stop Rogue Traders’ campaign encouraged neighbours, friends, families and carers to nominate themselves to discourage rogue traders. These traders often cold call and offer to carry-out repairs which are poor quality, unnecessary and charged at extortionate prices, sometimes even driving the victim to the bank to withdraw money or threatening them. The detriment of doorstep crime reaches beyond financial loss. It can cause a person’s mental health to deteriorate and in some cases, suffer physical harm. Signs that an unwanted doorstep caller is visiting a neighbour: eTraders have been cold calling in the area e A builder’s van is parked nearby, particularly one that doesn’t include a company name or contact details eBuilding or maintenance work on your neighbour’s garden or house starts unexpectedly ePoor quality work is visible on the roof, driveway or property eYour neighbour appears anxious or distressed eYour neighbour visits the bank, building society, or post office more frequently, particularly if they are accompanied by a trader What can I do? eAsk your neighbour in private - in person or on the phone if things are OK eIf they are displeased, suggest calling a relative or carer on their behalf eNote any vehicle registration numbers eKeep hold of any flyers you have received through your door eAsk if the trader has left any paperwork and put it in a clean food bag eIf you suspect a crime, call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or your local trading standards office eIf the situation with the trader becomes volatile, call the police To find vetted and approved local traders, go to www. safelocaltrades.com or call 0800 014 1832

Individual Savings Accounts

ISAs were launched on the 6th April 1999 as a replacement for “Tessas” (Tax-exempt special savings accounts) and “PEPs” (Personal Equity Plans). After 15 years, people are still confused about them, so I’m going to try and explain the differences. The current ISA contribution limit is £15,000 for the 2014/15 tax year, which is likely to increase in the future, and can now be split in any proportion between Cash and Stocks and Shares. The funds can also be transferred between both categories as required. You can do both a Cash ISA and a Stocks and Shares ISA in the same tax year - they do not have to be with the same provider. Other than the performance of the underlying investments, both Cash and Stocks and Shares ISAs are effectively a tax haven in that, other than a 10% tax on dividend income from Stocks and Shares, no Tax is deducted on either the income or capital gains of the investments. They are amongst the most tax efficient investments available to the general public. Cash ISAs are available to over 16s, whereas Stocks and Shares ISA are only available to over 18s. You also have to be resident in the UK for tax purposes. Traditionally people have tended to make the most of their cash allowance each year, but neglect their Stocks and Shares allowance.

Once the tax year has ended in April, that year’s allowance disappears and cannot be reclaimed, which means that the majority of people are missing out on a tax incentive each year. In addition, the rates available on Cash ISAs are currently very low and you are unlikely to find a rate that is above inflation without locking your money away for a long period. Whilst it has to be remembered that Stocks and Shares ISAs inherently carry some risk, the returns can be significantly higher, and it is now possible to switch cash holdings into Stocks and Shares for a period, whilst rates are low, and then switch back again when interest rates rise, which they surely will over the next year or so. Many Cash ISAs are sitting in accounts where the interest rates are fractions of one percent because banks and building societies are very adept at bringing out new accounts rather than updating their existing ones. By using a diversified portfolio of holdings within a Stocks and Shares ISA we can tailor the risk to the individual investor and thereby hope to put a limit on the volatility of the investment and therefore the potential losses. Indeed, there are some ISA investments which have capital guarantees built in – bear in mind that there is the age old trade-off of risk against return and, over the long term, one would expect a better return from the stock market than from cash. Maybe it’s time to review your ISAs - even if it is only to ensure that you are getting a reasonable cash return, or maybe to have the potential for a better return by using Stocks and Shares.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Windows 10: A Sneak Preview Although yet to be finalised before its 2015 release Windows 10 is available to download today as a beta (technical preview) version. So what’s new? a Return of the Start Button answering the intense criticism of the removal of this familiar tool in Windows 8. a A new Task-view button providing for one-click access to all of your running programs and Windows apps. a Multiple Desktops allowing a single user to configure multiple desktops reducing clutter of the app and program icons and improving productivity. For example you could have a desktop for business and one for home use on a laptop that you use at both locations. a Improved Pinning to allow you to quickly add programs and apps that you use often to the Start menu. a Snap improvements which provides for improved management of open applications and programs making it easier to multi-task. a Windows Apps can now run in a window allowing you to use the apps via the traditional desktop interface. a File Explorer/Finder improvements to provide improved search for those ‘missing’ documents. There are also some additional improvements to traditional tools that did not get mentioned in the recent Microsoft announcements including: a Improved command interface a A facelift of the notifications boxes (many now getting very old as they’ve transitioned from version to version over the years) a File History access improvements a Improved problem reporting I am sure that there will be many more additions and modifications between now and the official release but early signs are good that this version is going to be of the quality of XP and Windows 7 rather than the mini-disasters of Vista and Windows 8. Let’s hope so. Oh and before anyone asks; there was no Windows 9 – they skipped a number to reflect a ‘new generation’ of Windows. Marketing speak for ‘we can’t count’. | Travel Column by Clare Lockett, Travel Counsellor

Book Early and Relax Later

There’s no denying the excitement of booking a last-minute holiday and yes, you can bag a great value deal if you’re willing to hop on a plane next week. But the travel market is actually changing, and lots of cheap deals are actually becoming a thing of the past. For those savvy travellers among you, who want to find the best holiday ever, it actually pays to book ahead. It’s the age old question; should you book early or wait till the last minute in the hope of grabbing a bargain for your holiday or cruise deal? For some people, there is no real option, especially families who need to plan ahead around the school holidays, and those who have to take their breaks at set times.

So what are the advantages for you by booking early? 1) Secure the hotel you want. You may have a particular destination or resort in mind and, by booking too late, you may be left with what’s left, rather than what you actually want. “Travel Counsellors” have rooms secured in some of the world’s best hotels, so book early enough and together, we can cherry pick the right hotel to suit you.

Travel Counsellors

2) Stay in exclusive destinations. If you’re planning a special occasion, you’ll have a better chance of finding that dream holiday if you plan ahead. Exclusive destinations and hotels are in hot demand. So, if you’re planning for a honeymoon, anniversary, or other special occasion, book early and avoid disappointment. 3) You won’t miss out during school holidays. I know how important it is to avoid taking children out of school, so it makes sense to book early. That way you’ll have a better chance of securing the right holiday for you during peak times. 4) Massive savings can be had. By booking early, you can take advantage of ‘Earlybird’ savings, such as reduced nightly rates, free nights, free room upgrades and free meal plans. 5) Last and not least. You have something to look forward to. Booking your dream holiday early makes the excitement last much longer, keeping you cheerful during those dreary, wintry days, and making your holiday feel extra special when it finally arrives. Call me today about your holiday for next year you could make all sorts of savings.

Golden Future Ahead for Young Will Silver?

Talented Gosberton teenager Will Silver has reached the Area Final of the national “Open Mic UK” event, the biggest search for unsigned musical acts in the U.K. Will is a pupil at Bourne Academy and was the winner of “Bourne Academy's Got Talent”, earlier this year. He was entered for “Open Mic UK” by his sister, Frances, and initially auditioned for the under-16 age group at The Britannia Hotel in Nottingham in September, where he was successful in gaining a place in the Regional Final at Nottingham the following month. Here, Will sang a James Morrison cover, 'You Give Me Something' and was judged by music industry specialists and the audience, and has now progressed to the Area Final, to be held

at the end of November in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Will was supported by family and friends at the Regional Final and received excellent feedback from the judges on his stage performance, “awesome tone to his voice, great image and looking confident”. Will has been singing from the age of ten and has entered local talent competitions, winning “Pinchbeck’s Got Talent” twice. He is also a member of Polka Dots and Limelight Youth Academy in Spalding, and played Danny Zuko in “Grease”, earlier this year. Will has also performed at The Johnson Hospital Community Ball in July, entertaining 400 guests with ten cover tracks during the evening, and he also entertained guests recently at a Breast Cancer Charity Ball at Bourne Corn Exchange.

Bourne Academy Secondary School of the Year and more...! The inaugural “Spalding Guardian and Lincolnshire Free Press Education Awards Evening” was held recently and Bourne Academy were worthy winners of four of the nine categories, open to all schools across the south of the county. Pride of place will doubtless be the Duncan and Toplis sponsored, “Secondary School of 2014 Award”. This recognises “dedication, innovation and hard work making a real difference for the pupils and the community”. On an individual note, student Abi Hill exhibited “the most noticeable growth in progress, attitude and discipline”, to take “The Most Improved Student” title. Next, Kayleigh Adams, already the U.K.’s top triathlete at Under-20 level collected “The Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award”, whilst Head of Drama, Ted Fisk, completed the hat-trick of solo awards, with his “Contribution to 68

D I S C O V E R I N G

the Community” success. It was an evening of much pride and inspirational speech-giving at The South Holland Centre in Spalding. Local M.P. John Hayes talked of education resembling the lighting of a fire – the teacher applies the spark which hopefully becomes an inferno of a passion for learning and understanding. Bourne’s Paralympic athlete and retired R.A.F. Flight Lieutenant, Carl Harding, heaped welcome praise on to the teaching profession with his wise words. In response to his school’s success, Head Teacher, Mr. Laurence Reilly added, “We are honoured to receive this award. It is a fitting tribute for the hard work and commitment and success of our students, staff and governors in the past year”.

Pantomime? What’s That All About Then?

The Salvation Army Bourne

The Christmas Story Carol Service on Sunday 21st December at 6pm at The Corn Exchange, Bourne

Pantomimes take place around the Christmas period, based on well-known children's stories, such as Peter Pan, Aladdin, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty etc. They are performed not only in the best theatres in the land but also in village halls throughout Britain. Audience participation is a very important part of a pantomime. We are encouraged to boo the villain, whenever he enters the stage, argue with the Dame (who is always a man) and warn the Principal Boy (who is always a girl) to "Look out! He's behind you!" Slapstick is another important part of a British pantomime - the throwing of custard pies, the ugly sisters (who are always played by men) falling over, lots of silly costumes including of course, the pantomime horse, which is played by two people in a horse’s costume. By the end of the pantomime, the villain has been defeated, true love has conquered all and everyone lives happily ever after.

So how did this curious British institution come about?

Pantomime literally means "all kinds" of "mime". In the 14th Century, the early masques were musical, mime or spoken dramas, usually performed in grand houses. The elements of song and dance in pantomime are very important and the influences of the Italian "Commedia dell’Arte" can be seen. It consisted of a number of stock characters performing comic situations, with a highly visual content. The actors generally improvised their way through a plot involving characters such as Arlecchino, or Harlequin and his true love, Columbina or Columbine. Over the centuries, the traditions have become more established and the pantomime will now be a key feature of many families’ Christmas plans. Oh yes it is!

| Golf Tip - by Darren Game Use your Watch to Lower your Score

Most people wear their watch on their lead hand in golf. Use this in practice and in play to help you hit straighter shots. To understand this, with your lead arm make a backswing and stop when your arm gets to a position, parallel to the ground. At this position, the watch face should be pointing 45 degrees towards the sky. Now, when you swing down and through, past the impact position, and the lead arm is again parallel to the ground, check the position of your watch face. You should find it now angled 45 degrees, pointing to the ground. Now repeat this with both hands on your club, remembering these 45 degree angles of the watch to create the same positions and feelings, and finally strike some balls, repeating the movements. Use this on the course and you should hit straighter shots with all your clubs. I hope you enjoy this tip to improve your game. Remember, golf lessons are available in Bourne Golf Studio, to help you enjoy your golf more. Call me on 01778 395992 or email darren@bournegolfstudio. com

Discovering...

...the Girls Training Corps by Rex Needle

M

any civilian organisations sprang up to encourage young people assist on the home front during the Second World War of 193945 but most were male orientated, a bias the government tried to correct with the formation of an official unit designed to appeal to teenage girls, the National Association of Girls’ Training Corps with units in most towns and cities, dedicated to the wider aims of citizenship for young ladies with instruction in home making, craftsmanship and public affairs. No 816 (Bourne) Company was formed on 7th March 1943 and was an instant success, organised on military lines with a local family doctor as commandant. She was Dr Ruth Finn who had returned to Bourne from her home in London to help her brother, Dr John Galletly (1899-1993), at his practice in North Road at a time when the number of doctors in the town had been reduced because of the war. The uniforms consisted of black shoes, navy skirts, white blouses, navy ties and forage caps. There were ranks and promotions for leadership and good conduct and by the end of the year more than 50 girls had joined the unit which was busy with a full programme of training and parades. There were lectures on home nursing, practical work on bed making, drilling, talks on leadership, organisation and etiquette, ambulance work and stretcher bearing,

sanitation, local government, map reading and the Morse code. The girls also had an active social life holding dances at the Corn Exchange when boys from the Army Cadet and Air Training Corps were invited. Other activities included knitting blankets and garments for refugees in occupied Europe, picking rose hips for turning into syrup, farm work and raising money to help the forces. Training courses were also held at Stamford, Lincoln and other venues, where the girls, many of them away from home for the first time, were treated to a taste of communal living, sleeping on straw mattresses on the floors of drill halls, doing their ablutions in washrooms and eating cookhouse meals. The Bourne company disbanded when the war ended in September 1945 and Dr Finn returned to London. She died in 1992, aged 89, and her work for the community was recognised by Bourne Town Council in 2004 when a street on the new housing estate built on the site of the former Bourne Hospital in South Road was named Finn Close.

| Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings” “‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The burglar knew there were presents galore, As he walked into the house through the open door.”

A slight adaptation of the famous poem by Clement Moore, although I can hear you all cringe at my poor effort! However, this is meant to convey an important message. How often in the lead up to Christmas can you see into houses in the evenings, with curtains open displaying the Christmas tree in the window, with its lights sparkling, and a small pile of presents under the tree waiting to be opened? Christmas is the time when we stock our homes with the latest electronic gadgets, computers, jewellery and “must-have” accessories. Unfortunately, it provides thieves with the perfect incentive to commit burglaries. By taking some simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim. a Make your home look as if someone is at home, by leaving lights on, maybe with timers coming on and going off at different set times. Invest in motion sensor security lights to light up your home’s exterior. a Festive lighting - be secure. A common mistake people make is to feed extension cables through partially open windows leaving your

house vulnerable. When it comes to outdoor lighting, install outdoor electrical outlets. a Do not place any presents under the Christmas tree until Christmas Eve. If you cannot avoid this, make sure that when you’re not at home your curtains are drawn. a Remember to set your house alarm, if you have one, and ensure all windows, doors and gates are secure. Always secure your garden shed or outbuilding just like you would your home; most garden sheds contain valuable tools and equipment. a Dispose of gift packaging carefully. Make sure you only put your rubbish out just before the collection, and do your best to fold boxes so that they do not advertise your new presents to thieves! a Protect your identity. Shred or burn any receipts, personal paperwork and envelopes with your name and address displayed. Be careful though not to shred any important warranty details! aIf you’re going away at Christmas, be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is at home. Do not leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like, “We’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays”. a Register your property for FREE on Immobilise at www.immobilise.com . This is a national property database that the Police can access and search, if we recover suspected stolen property. Hopefully, your property will not be targeted by burglars, but I hope some of the advice provided helps to keep your home safe over the festive period and into 2015. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

| Motoring -

W

monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Christmas “Must-Haves”

ith just a few weeks left until Christmas, I thought some suggestions of “motoring” type gifts might come in handy for readers of “Discovering Bourne”. One thing to consider is whether the gift is going to be fully appreciated by the recipient; practical gifts are usually much more welcome when they are likely to be used, rather than forgotten about in the boot or glovebox! Just a few ideas then, to help you on your way. You could make the gift very personal to benefit the driver (Mums for example), for example: stylish leather gloves, designer sunglasses for the low sun in the winter months, a bottle of perfume or decorative items that add colour or fragrance. For the more practically minded (Dads for example), there are plenty of car accessories they would not necessarily go out and buy, but would be very pleased to receive as a

gift. These include emergency/break down items which can actually be pretty costly, but could well turn out to be priceless if called upon, for example: first aid kit, fluorescent jacket, quality jump leads, tyre pressure/ tread gauge, fire extinguisher, high protection thermal blanket or emergency tool kit. That then leaves the gifts that would just be pretty handy to always have in the car, for example: satnav, spare recharger for the mobile, torch, umbrella or a coin collection box. If your budget allows, there will, very likely, be plenty of car specific gifts on show at your car dealership, which will show you’ve made a bit more effort in your selection, and these can often be pretty stylish too. Wishing you all a very happy, healthy and peaceful Christmas. Please drive safely – Remember to always add more time for your journeys when driving in poor driving conditions.

Callum Byrne - Top Apprentice in the Country

By scooping the gold medal at the recent 2014 I.M.I. (Institute of the Motor Industry) “SkillAuto” Competition at the N.E.C. in Birmingham, Callum Byrne, 20, proved one thing – he’s the top automotive apprentice in the U.K. A former student at the Robert Manning School in Bourne and Peterborough Regional College, Callum performed before 75,000 visitors over two days at the prestigious annual event. Speaking proudly of “their own local lad”, Brian Pitts from Chapel Motor Repairs Ltd in Baston, where Callum is employed, praised his technical wizardry underneath the bonnet but also his

good-humoured and modest nature. Callum’s knowledge and skills were tested on a variety of mechanical and electrical tasks which represented the wide range of vehicle repairs faced by a busy garage, as well as his time management skills, procedural efficiency and safety compliance – all in front of huge crowds! I.M.I. Competition Manager, David Massie, commented, “All the finalists were quick to show why they are considered the best automotive apprentices in the country. I’m sure every one of them will go on to be leaders in the industry”. Congratulations Callum and good luck in your future career as a “leader of industry”!
