t the time of writing, we’re still very much wrapped up in 2014 and the final throes of the year, with its Christmas parties, the Bourne Lions chauffeuring Santa around our streets, the carols and all the end-of term concerts, all of which make it such a fabulous time of year. In this edition, there’s a report on the recent fantastic Christmas fayre in the town. I always think how beautiful the street lights are and how they provide that final touch, as we plan frantically to get everything in place for the big day. Once again, all the very best to you all for the festive period and thank-you to our contributors. The feedback we receive from the public helps shape our ideas for future editions and makes us feel it’s a job worth doing. Enjoy the words!

Claire x

It’s a temptation, (which I’ll try to avoid dwelling on), to ask, “Where’s that year gone?” Already with family organizer in place on kitchen wall and proposed dates of “not to be missed events” already pencilled in, we race through to 2015, looking forwards, with anticipation and much hope. This first edition of 2015 does just that too. Why not get involved in a new regime of improved health and fitness? Check out the advice from Renu. What about taking up the challenge and getting yourself circuit-training to the sounds of the Seventies? Read about celebrating Burns Night and have a go at winning tickets to watch Leicester Tigers take on Northampton Saints. Or just relax, and read the reviews, features and everything else on the following pages! The safari in Kenya sounds tasty! Couldn’t resist this one, for you chaps, which I saw recently: “If at first you don’t succeed………do as your wife suggested an hour earlier.”

John

Best wishes to you all for 2015.

Beating Belly Fat It might be considered attractive for Santa to have a big fat belly, but not many of us chuckle, “Ho Ho Ho”, when we look at our reflection. In fact, for many of us, belly fat is the single biggest cause for complaint about our bodies. So, why is it that so many of us gather inches around our middle? Christmas is certainly the time to eat, drink and be merry but it’s not what you do between Christmas and New Year that you need to be concerned about. It’s what you are doing between New Year and Christmas that will make the difference! Right now is the most popular time for people to start a diet or a new exercise regime. If you are serious about beating belly fat, then this year make it your mission to review your regular diet and activities for long-lasting results. It’s tempting to go for the “quick win” options, such as “Lose 7 pounds in 7 days” or “miracle diets”, but the reality is that the results are short lived and you end up back in your old habits. There are two types of belly fat; one responds to exercise and the other responds to diet, so the best way to get a flat tummy involves a sensible exercise regime and a healthy diet. Inch loss is what matters, so try not to be focussed on the scales and measure yourself instead. Low fat, low calorie combinations, with long periods between meals, are the perfect way to increase your belly fat. Hunger leads to low energy levels and this leaves you reaching for starchy, high

sugar foods that will not fill you up and plant themselves firmly around your middle. Big plates of pasta, potatoes or rice with your curry or casserole may be the perfect diet for an athlete about to do a long distance run, but if you are more likely to be sitting in an office or a car, they are going straight to your waistline. Reducing your alcohol intake will also drastically reduce the size of your beer/ wine/ vodka belly! The secret is to aim for a higher proportion of protein, such as chicken, fish and eggs, and fill your plate with lots of vegetables that grow above the ground. Eat regular meals and drink plenty of water. The right amount of healthy fats such as olive oil, and even butter, can actually help you lose your belly fat! Short bursts of exercise rather than long workouts are essential to kick start your metabolism and increase inch loss. Thirty minutes of this type of exercise, two or three times a week, is perfect. Core conditioning exercises such as Pilates, Yoga or general body toning, will complement this.

At Renu, our “Speedy Gym for Busy Women” promotes a thirty minute workout with sound nutritional advice, and has had amazing inch-loss results for its members, with results that last. We also run a Female Fat Loss Formula, and members on this lose an average of fourteen pounds and seventeen inches in six weeks, so it is a great way to kick start your new regime. Wellhead Practice Excellence in head to toe Complementary Healthcare

The Wellhead Practice Nearly Three Years On H

appy New Year to you all and welcome to 2015. This year, the Wellhead Practice will be celebrating its third birthday in March. My initial goal was to start and develop Bourne’s first multidisciplinary complementary healthcare practice, providing many of the mainstream disciplines under one roof. We now have a team of nine clinicians who provide seven different therapies – no wonder the time has flown by. This year, we have introduced two new chiropodists and started a remedial and sports massage clinic too. Typically at this time of year, many of us will make promises to improve our lives or someone else’s, in one way or another. Perhaps it’s to get fitter by losing some weight or to quit smoking. Maybe it’s more about getting around to fixing that niggling back and shoulder pain, the irritable bowel or painful toe nail. Whatever it may be, the Wellhead Practice could have the expertise to help you. Emma Mersseman and Philip Hakim are the osteopaths here. By using ‘hands on’ treatments involving, amongst others, different forms of soft tissue massage and joint movement, we can address a number of musculo-skeletal problems. These can range from headaches and neck pain to lower back pain, sacro-iliac joint problems, the knee and issues associated with fallen arches. We look at the whole body, and how it interacts as one. We provide advice on posture and look for ways to prevent relapses. This can be through exercise, lifestyle modifications and sometimes, by simply explaining to a patient the body mechanics and trigger factors behind a problem. Rachael Baker and Amy Leverton run the chiropody clinic together. Rachael has 35 years of NHS experience and was a clinical lead and specialist in diabetes-related foot complaints. Amy has a special interest in the bio-mechanics of the foot and can advise on 8

orthotics. Both provide routine chiropody treatments and work together to perform nail surgery under local anaesthesia when needed. Between them, we find most foot problems can be sorted out. Tina King is our degree-level Acupuncturist. Acupuncture has been used to help a range of complaints, from chronic lower back pain to arthritic pain and headaches. Tina has post-graduate training in hand and auricular (ear) acupuncture for a wide range of health issues, but also in the treatment of the sideeffects of cancer treatments and palliative care.

Bourne | January 2015

Rebecca Brett is our remedial sports massage therapist. As well as teaching remedial massage, she has over five years of pitch-side experience with international sports teams. Rebecca can look to ease postural complaints, treat sporting- and overuse-injuries, but also provide tailored rehabilitation guidance and exercises. Rebecca will be the first to say that you don’t need to be a sporty type to have a sports massage, as treatment is tailored to you; in fact, some of her clients are over eighty years old! Sophie Driver is our nutritional therapist with over ten years of experience. Sophie specialises in IBS and digestive problems, and can carry out the very insightful in-house food intolerance testing. Sophie also runs a special weight loss programme with support and the all-important client education aspect. Diane Rayson is our reflexologist with fifteen years’ experience. Diane has a special interest in helping with women’s health issues including stress and anxiety-related

problems using the more natural method of reflexology. As a hypnotherapist, Jacqueline Preston uses a unique form of communication aimed at directing a person’s imagination in a way that helps elicit changes in some of our perceptions, thoughts and behaviours. Reasons for seeing a hypnotherapist can range from stress management and poor self-esteem to addressing attitudes to weight loss, insomnia, exams and attempts to quit smoking. Whoever you see, rest assured that all our practitioners are fully registered and insured with their respective governing bodies. They take a comprehensive medical case-history before starting any treatment. For an appointment or more information, please telephone the practice where one of our receptionists will be happy to assist you.

In the meantime, we wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year!

| Your health by Jo Sunner BSc. DO. MMSM. Osteopath

“The Cold Shoulder Treatment!” What is “Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)”? As its name suggests, it is reduced mobility of the shoulder joint and tends to be very painful. To start with, a dull ache might be felt over the shoulder, with sharper pains with certain activities. As time goes on, you may find that moving your hand behind your head or back is difficult, and maybe also raising your arm to the horizontal. You may also have pain when you bring your hand to your mouth, while eating or brushing your teeth. Often, the pain seems worse at night, and sleeping on the affected side can be difficult. The pain is usually felt over your outer shoulder, extending over the outer part of the upper arm.

Treatment for a frozen shoulder Treatment for patients with this condition is vital, to hasten the healing process and ensure a good outcome. Treatment may comprise: t soft tissue massage t electrotherapy (e.g. ultrasound, TENS) t joint mobilization t dry needling t ice or heat treatment t exercises to improve flexibility, strength and posture t hydrotherapy t education t activity modification advice t postural correction t devising and monitoring an appropriate return to activity plan t GP advice on pain relief

Prognosis of a frozen shoulder Most cases of frozen shoulder tend to settle after

a number of months. In severe cases, symptoms may be present for eighteen months or more. Usually, the painful stage of a frozen shoulder lasts from two to six months. In some cases, patients may experience ongoing and permanent restriction in movement, following completion of all three stages. However, most cases of frozen shoulder will have a good outcome. A comprehensive list of treatments for a frozen shoulder and back pain are available from our reception at Pulse Practice. Alternatively, telephone: 01778 426000.

You Can’t Escape the Vape! 2014 Word of the Year is Announced

Wordsmiths will be pleased to know that the 2014 “Word of the Year”, an accolade created by The Oxford English Dictionary, is the verb, “to vape”. It means “to inhale and exhale the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette”, and was first heard in the 1980s, when “smokeless cigarettes” first appeared. According to Oxford’s calculations, usage of vape, which, as a noun, can also refer to “an e-cigarette or similar device”, more than doubled between 2013 and 2014. The selection of “vape” as “Word of the Year” reflects the exploding popularity of e-cigarettes— which, effectively invented in 2003, are suddenly now part of a multi-million pound market. It also follows 2014’s historic opening of legal marijuana shops in some parts of the world. Residents in Colorado and Washington State, U.S.A. for example, can now buy vape pens - devices that vaporize liquids containing nicotine or cannabis into forms which users can inhale. For every winner, there are always the runners-up: contactless (adj.): describing technologies that allow a smart card, etc., to connect wirelessly to an electronic reader, typically in order to make a payment. normcore (n.): a fashion movement in which ordinary, unfashionable clothing is worn as a deliberate statement. slacktivist (n.): one who engages in digital activism on the Web which is regarded as requiring little time or involvement. So how has the last decade served to enrich our vocabulary, if “enriching” has, in fact, occurred? The “roll of honour” reads like a whistle-stop tour through the tabloids and soaps! 2013 – selfie 2012 – omnishambles 2011 – squeezed middle 2010 – big society 2009 – simples 2008 – credit crunch 2007 – carbon footprint 2006 – bovvered 2005 – Sudoku 2004 – chav Thought of the Moment: Is “giving up vaping” our newest New Year’s Resolution?

An Evening with Tiff Needell - Thursday, 8th January 2015 Bourne Motor Racing Club announce a change to their previously advertised event on Thursday January 8th 2015 as Quentin Wilson, who was due to appear, is now unavailable, and the Club are very grateful to Tiff Needell who has agreed to step in. The evening should feature a video introduction from Quentin Wilson. Tiff is well-known for his work as a TV presenter, appearing alongside William Woollard & Jeremy Clarkson in the early days of Top Gear, and working more recently with Vicki Butler-Henderson in Channel 5’s Fifth Gear. Tiff is also an accomplished racing driver, but when the dream of a full- time Grand Prix seat failed to materialise, he began a move to the World Sportscar Championship in search of a paid drive, while still seeking to further his single-seater career in Europe. Chasing drives meant hanging around

16

D I S C O V E R I N G

race tracks, and when Tiff was spotted doing nothing at a televised Mallory Park meeting he was invited into the commentary box to be the expert analyst. This was the start of a 21 year association with the BBC as he joined Murrary Walker for the live Grandstand coverage of Silverstone’s Formula Two meeting in 1981. Tiff’s successful racing career covers the many single seater formulas, including Formula 1, World Sports Cars including contesting 14 Le Mans 24 hr races and even rallying. Tiff is possibly best remembered as being the man who helped Nigel Mansell into the wall at Donnington Park in 1993. Tiff’s talk will take place on Thursday, 8th January 2015 at the Bourne Corn Exchange. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased online at www. Bourne’s Magical Christmas Fayre Saturday November 29th - words from Paul Fellows Bourne wore its heart on its sleeve, (or, if you prefer, top coat and woolly hat!) as it seemed to “become one” for the annual switching-on of the Christmas lights. It was truly extraordinary to look out, from “the stage”, up North Street and see so many people greeting the start of our Christmas celebrations. Yet again, the Bourne Events Committee had more than succeeded, in bringing the whole town together. From the market stalls and fair on North Street, past the performers on the stage, round through the Continental Market, in every shop, the Corn Exchange and the Tree Festival in the Methodist Church everyone came together to not only give appreciation of the season, but to show what it is that is so special about Bourne. At the heart of the town, outside the Town Hall, it was inspiring to listen to children from the two main Primary Schools sing their hearts out, along with a host of Bourne-based performers. It was the ‘Sally Army’ band, who started the proceedings rolling, who made us all think that Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without them, and how we’d all be a lot poorer without the charitable work which they do for the town.

Each year, as the countdown approaches its conclusion, (performed so well this year by Jade Etherington, Mayor Bob Russell and Father Christmas), there is always a brief moment or two when you worry that the lights perhaps won’t come on, and then what to do if they don’t - but thankfully, they always do! The lights we all know so well light up the town and, for this month, I’d like to think they seem to light us all up too. They are a physical representation of this, our town; they’re well known; they’ve been refurbished and they shine with optimism; they’re a little old fashioned and they’re wonderful! Well done, and a big thank-you to the whole town for making this event what it is, and a particularly warm thank-you to Gordon Cochrane, for his annual persistence and huge heart that gets it all going. We need to have more events like this throughout the year. We need to celebrate, and be proud about what Bourne is, with such ‘coming togethers’ which involve all aspects of Bourne’s many and varied communities. January 2015 | D I S C O V E R I N G Bourne

Calling all “Luvvies” The Hurst Children’s Theatre Group could be for YOU!

Established in Bourne in 2008, but part of a much older, bigger and well-established “family”, the Hurst Children’s Theatre Group, (HCTG), is seeking new talent. In the words of Bryony Hurst, (grand-daughter of the Group’s founder of fifty years ago), “It’s not a pushy, strictly-structured club; the emphasis is on having FUN. All we ask for is enthusiasm!” Those of us fortunate enough to remember The Springfields from the 1960s, (the fabulous Dusty, brother Tom and Mike Hurst) will be fascinated to hear that the same Mike Hurst, (Bryony’s Dad) now writes all the scripts which the HCTG uses. This original approach sets them apart from all the other groups who rely on often over-used scripts. Bryony continues, “It is immensely rewarding to see the children flourish, and I feel very blessed to have some wonderful

children who have been with me since the beginning, (2008), and a few of them are now taking part in their sixth pantomime! What we offer is original and, by keeping numbers limited, we are able to give individual attention. There are no exams or auditions with us; we just want the children to have free expression and fun." For further information, please call Bryony on 10476 550804, or visit the website www. hctgb.co.uk. The final words go to Eleanor Waldock, (Class C, and a “veteran” of three years!)… “Our current show is Jack and the Beanstalk, and we are performing this on January 16th and 17th, 2015, at the South Holland Centre in Spalding. Why not come along, and see for yourself what a group of children can produce with encouragement, enthusiasm and dedication?" | January 2015

Burns Night - January 25th

What’s That All About Then?

Burns Suppers have been part of Scottish culture for about 200 years, as a means of commemorating Scotland’s best loved bard, Robert Burns. The ritual was started by close friends of Burns, a few years after his death in 1796, as a tribute to his memory.

The Format for a Burns Supper 1) The Chairperson’s opening address A few welcoming words start the evening and the meal commences with the Selkirk Grace The company are asked to stand to receive the haggis. A piper then leads the chef, carrying the haggis to the top table, while the guests accompany them with a slow handclap. The chairman, or invited guest, then recites Burns’ famous poem “To A Haggis”, with great enthusiasm. When he reaches the line “an’ cut you up wi’ ready slight”, he cuts open the haggis with a sharp knife. It is customary for the company to applaud the speaker, then stand and toast the haggis with a glass of whisky. 2) The company will then dine. A typical Bill o’ Fare would be: Cock-a-leekie soup Haggis warm reeking, rich wi’ Champit Tatties, Bashed Neeps Tyspy Laird (sherry trifle) A Tassie o’ Coffee

Originally, this was a thank-you to the ladies for preparing the food, and a time to toast the ‘lassies’ in Burns’ life. 5) Response from the lassies A light, humorous opportunity to outline some possible faults to be found amongst their menfolk. 6) Poems and songs Once the speeches are complete, the evening continues with songs, Scottish dancing and poems. These should include a good variety, to fully show the different moods of Burns’ muse. Favourites for recitations are “Tam O’ Shanter”, “Address to the Unco Guid”, “To A Mouse” and “Holy Willie’s Prayer”. The evening will culminate with the company standing, linking hands and singing Auld Lang Syne to conclude the programme.

3) The Immortal Memory One of the central features of the evening is where an invited guest is asked to give a short speech on Burns, to outline the greatness and relevance of the poet today. 4) Toast to the Lassies The main speech is followed by a more lighthearted address to the women in the audience. Planning for

Success Planning for by Paula Finch

24

There’s something about standing on the cusp of a New Year that inspires us to reflect on the past year and evaluate what went well, what we achieved and what we’d like to do differently. The question is, are you really ready to make the change? Setting objectives can bring us a sense of achievement, well-being and success, however you choose to define it, but it’s worth remembering that it’s not where you start from but where you aim your sights that determines your journey and the final destination. Planning can help you get there. Without a goal in mind it’s easy to become distracted, diverted or, worse still, stuck in a rut, doing the same old things that you’ve always done and getting the same old results. Sitting down to plan takes a certain mind-set but is worth it in the end. Here are some tips to help you set your goals and stick to them:

3. Enlist the help of others Finding someone to share a common goal will help you stay committed and motivated. A mentor– someone you respect and who has already achieved goals you want to reach – can provide insight and advice on your journey. 4. Keep it simple Break down your goals into manageable chunks, so you don’t feel overwhelmed by the long-term goal. The first step is always the hardest, so be specific about what you are going to do and when and make sure you check your progress along the way. 5. Enjoy the journey Having motivated yourself into taking that first initial step, let yourself feel good about the progress you make. Prepare yourself for any obstacles that might stand in your way, stay focussed and celebrate as you accomplish each sub-goal.

1. Put your goals in writing Be specific. Use action verbs. Include outcomes that you’ll recognise when they happen. Add dates when things need to be completed by and build in rewards when results are achieved. 2. Visualise your goals This works particularly well for personal goals. Simply go through magazines and find pictures and words that visualise your goals and create a goals board. Pin it up somewhere prominent so you can see it every day as a powerful reminder of where you’re heading.

“On a Roll!”

With 30 years of experience

26

D I S C O V E R I N G

Bourne | January 2015

Any tick-list of what constitutes a good carpet company would have “personal, friendly service”, “customer satisfaction” and “quality product” up there at the top. Andy Baldwin, owner of Bourne Carpets, has no doubts about it. “I feel that we give good honest advice and that my customers are happy with the service that we provide.” As the only carpet stockist in Bourne, Andy sees this as a clear advantage. He is able to negotiate good deals with his suppliers and this means he is unlikely to be beaten on price by any of the rival carpet firms in the area. There are a huge range of rolls and remnants carried in stock at the Cherry Holt Square store. This means that an express service can be offered, once the customer has been advised thoroughly by Andy and his knowledgeable staff. Andy brings 30 years of experience in the carpet trade to the table, having been with his parents at Stamford Carpets for 15 of them. It was here where he first cut his teeth as a carpet fitter. Now well-established for 10 years in Bourne, he speaks proudly of how no one in his teams of carpet fitters has less than 15 years of experience – one can even boast 45 years “on the tools”! Bourne Carpets has an enormous range of samples in their showroom of carpets, vinyls, wood flooring and vinyl tiles. Brinton, Cormar, Victoria and Westex are all top carpet manufacturers that are represented here. Wood Flooring companies include the prestigious Kahrs of Sweden and V4. Look towards Quickstep and Krono if you’re seeking a quality laminate floor, whilst the Luxury Vinyl Tile coverings see Karndean and Victoria as amongst

the finest. Incidentally, Andy is able to provide a specialist fitter for the wood flooring and Karndean products, further enriching the service he can offer. Great emphasis is placed on the oldfashioned values of good, honest advice and friendly service at the right price. As Andy says, “Look after the customers and your business will grow”. They do … and it has! Yes, they are on a roll!

Gifts from me to you!

ave you ever slept in silk sheets? If not, would you like to try? I have a pair of silk pillow cases to give away later in January and before that I have this wonderfully colourful modern lampshade and cushion as a prize. Check my website blog for current competitions and feel free to enter as many as you like.

Silk bedlinen: Silk will help you enjoy

a relaxing night’s sleep because it’s a natural fibre and has hypoallergenic properties. The breathable fabric works to regulate the body’s temperature and this means you are less likely to wake up feeling too hot or too cold. I love writing my blog because I learn new things during my research. For instance, did you know silk contains the same naturally occurring proteins as hair? I didn’t. I understand that this quality means there is less friction and moisture loss preventing hair from becoming dry and brittle so a silk pillow case is the ideal beauty treatment to help you achieve sleek and shiny hair! Added to this you may benefit from an improved complexion. Due to the fact that silk is less absorbent than cotton it helps skin retain its natural moisture keeping it soft and supple. It can

help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and possibly save a ton of money on expensive creams. It’s got to be worth a try don’t you think? One of the concerns about owning silk bedlinen is the washing. We are so used to throwing sheets into the machine for a robust clean we have simply got out of the ‘handwashing’ routine. But buy a mild silk detergent and you can use the machine for silk bedlinen, just set your programme to 30 °C, or hand wash if you prefer. A cool tumble dry, or air dry, and you are ready to make the bed again!

Talk over ideas for your next project with Yasmin on 07831 231 664 or email: ycid@ YasminChopin.com. See her website for competitions www. YasminChopin.com. 28

Bourne Academy’s

“Bugsy” is a Blast! E

arly December saw Bourne Academy perform their annual Academy Musical to local primary schools and the general public. The cast of seventy strong was bursting with pride and enthusiasm, come the final performance, and what a performance it was! It had everything, from great moments of comedy and charismatic acting to engaging, catchy musical numbers, which had the audience humming the tune, “You Give a Little Love”, all the way home. Bugsy Malone, played by Thomas Cooke (Yr.13), performed the role with maturity and diligence, applying a strong sense of necessity to narrate the plot line clearly with a fitting degree of charm and wit. He was complemented well by leading lady, Mia Shaw, who played the enchanting Blousey Brown, singing her solo numbers with pitch-perfect tone and a clear sense of characterisation. Beth Pattison’s interpretation of Fat Sam was hilarious, as she applied engaging physical attributes to the role. This left a memorable

30

D I S C O V E R I N G

impression on the audience, and was also complemented by her comic second-in-command, Knuckles (Jessica Hammond). Her clowning techniques provided extra physical comedy, creating a great warmth to the characters’ relationship. Another onstage comedy duo with traits reminiscent of the great Laurel and Hardy, was Smolsky and O’Dreary, the incompetent detectives, played by Harry Higgins and Will Campbell. There was clearly a strong emphasis on the comedy here, and the two actors had a good measure of the slapstick elements that these scenes require. Dandy Dan’s sly presence was expertly delivered by James Girard. James is keen to go into the acting profession, and found the role of Dandy Dan a new and exciting challenge, having always played comedy roles, and never the archetypal “bad guy”. James was supported by the equally elegant, but selfish, Louella (Courtney Fowler). She gave new emphasis to the role of Loretta, which supported the enigmatic Tallulah, played by Amy Durno. Amy used

Bourne | January 2015

her high standard of professional dance experience to provide the flair and presence to the role. It was a fine interpretive performance of the unfortunate Fizzy, played with great finesse by Emma Symmonds. Her “Tomorrow” solo was beautifully sung, and backed up by a team of tap dancers from all year groups. Other classic musical numbers, such as “So You Want to be a Boxer” and “Down and Outs”, were enjoyed by a cast of younger students who threw themselves into every musical number with great energy and enthusiasm. As with any good musical, the strength of the performance is judged on the quality of the musical numbers, and this show had an abundance of expertly choreographed and tunefully sung classics, confidently belted out with gusto. The opening number, “Fat Sam’s Grand Slam”, was a delightful burst of youthful energy that was tightly coordinated with Charleston-like gestures and movement, to complement the late 1920’s era. Of course, it is the “mess element” that is the key to a good “Bugsy” showdown, and the splurge guns were primed with silly string as well as confetti cannons throughout. The highly memorable car chase scene, at the end of Act One, with a real pedal car that came down the aisle, was complemented by an inventive interpretation of the crazy Looney Bergonzi by Jordan Crookell (Yr.11). The cameo roles that “Bugsy” brings to life, provide a great opportunity for students of all years to showcase their talents, and Creative Production Manager and Drama teacher, Samantha Landers, commented: “It has been a real pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic and talented cast of all years. Bugsy is a great choice because it gives so many students an opportunity to play a speaking role and with such a range of talent at our disposal, it was the best option in so many ways.” The whole show was produced by a team of Year 12 students, as part of their Unit 2 studies, entitled “Planning a Creative Event”. Students in Year 12 took on the roles of Director, Musical Director, Stage Manager, Lighting Designer and Choreographer. Head of Drama, Ted Fisk, complimented these students on their commitment and application during

the process. He said, “Putting on a production on this scale requires great organisation and creativity. The students in Year 12 have excelled this year, in mastering the very skills and management required to maximize the energies of the cast and the potential of the script.” A selection of students visited The Cedars Residential Home on the Thursday afternoon, to perform a mini version to residents, which was warmly received. Pianist and technician, Tom Swinn, described the experience: “The residents were lovely; they were really grateful and enjoyed the extracts and musical numbers that our Year 13’s chose to perform. It was a great experience for these students, as many of them aspire to forge a career for themselves in the performing arts industry.” Whether students wish to go into the industry or not, it is simply the magic of teamwork and togetherness in this production, (reflecting the strong house system that there is at Bourne Academy), which demonstrates so well how all years can work in harmony together, to produce effective and indeed, impressive outcomes.

It’s All About Or Is It?

“Me, Myself, I”!

Selfish Youngsters in the Spotlight Those of us of a certain age will perhaps be familiar with a Joan Armatrading song, (now thirty-five years old!), entitled “Me Myself I”. Looking at the lyrics confirms the view that she just wants to be alone, content with her own company – a desire we ourselves may sometimes feel at times. She’s not necessarily being selfish here, when she sings, “Don’t wanna be the bad guy Don’t wanna make a soul cry It’s not that I love myself I just don’t want company”. On the other hand, and fast-forwarding over thirty years, when we consider the following research, we might be seeing a different picture altogether, and an interesting take on our society today. The findings from a large survey of 75,000 volunteers in the U.S.A. seem to confirm that young people talk about themselves considerably more than their elders. Professor of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, Mark Liberman, carefully analysed the content of the volunteers’ Facebook accounts. Perhaps not surprisingly, you might already be thinking, the under-20s used “I”, “me”, my” and “mine” almost twice as often as their

over-60s counterparts in the survey. Conversely, first-person plural pronouns - “we”, “us”, “our” and “ours”- were much more frequent among the older Facebook users. It is the latest in a series of recent linguistic studies to show that here we have a generation, those born between the mid-1980s and the turn of the millennium, who do seem to talk about “Me, myself, I” rather a lot! However, as is often the case, research like this is out there, set up to be shot down by others’ opinions and findings. The University of Texas’s Professor James Panebaker, for example, assures us that self-centredness has been a perennial trait of the young for centuries. “When we are young, we are far more insecure about just who we are, where we are in society and how we feel”, he said. “We want others to know more about us!”

Conversely, first-person plural pronouns - “we”, “us”, “our” and “ours”were much more frequent among the older Facebook users So, parents, the fear of us having produced youngsters who are completely selfish can now be seen as nothing more than what comes naturally. We have no need to worry! However, the last word should go to American satirist, Ambrose Bierce, and we can ask ourselves if this doesn’t just apply to us all, irrespective of our age… “Selfish : adj. – Devoid of consideration for the selfishness of others”. 32

As we leave 2014 and head into the new year, it’s worth looking back at the past twelve months of the Bourne Business Chamber and reflecting on the success that we’ve enjoyed, especially regarding our increased number of local business members. The success of the group is down to the commitment and attitude of all of our members, but a few individuals deserve recognition and an ‘end of year thank you’ for going the extra mile to support the group. Step forward please, our chairman, Paul Ross; our group secretary, Joanne Dolby and our membership and marketing manager Claire Saberton. Glasses are raised in this festive season to these three, from all within the group and a very big thank-you. For those local businesses that have not yet come over to join us at one of our monthly meetings, please try to visit us soon. You will receive a hearty welcome, free tea/coffee and biscuits, and you’ll (perhaps!) be very surprised at the friendliness of the group and the diversity of businesses. We meet at Wake House, in North Street, on the third Tuesday of each month and you may attend two meetings to check us out before committing to joining. We keep the fees low, at £40 per annum, much lower than private business networking groups, and we have two social meetings per year, (a meal in a local pub or restaurant). Your subscription includes the cost of one of these social meetings, which makes it even better value for money! Finally a very Happy 2015 to all in Bourne and let’s hope it is a successful year for us all, both in our business and our family lives. Do you need help with

| Your Finances

by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

Investing when interest rates are rising Against a backdrop of strengthening economic growth, policymakers at the Bank of England are now widely expected to raise UK interest rates at some point during the first half of 2015. So, after years of exceptionally low rates, what will a higher-rate environment mean for investors? Investors will often favour a pragmatic approach to the beginning of a rise in the interest rate cycle, preferring to concentrate on the positive reasons behind the increase. After all, after more than five years at their historic low of 0.5%, higher rates would imply confidence in a sustainable and growing economy. For those inclined to rely relatively heavily on the income generated by their cash savings, higher interest rates are likely to come as a relief. On the other hand, an increase in the cost of borrowing will prove less welcome to those with debts, mortgage holders and buy-to-let investors, although commercial property could benefit from economic expansion. Higher interest rates tend to be negative for bondholders because the rates paid by bonds are then seen as less competitive. That said, bonds are not a homogenous group and the reaction of government and investment-grade bonds is likely to differ from that of high-yield bonds, which are more closely correlated to the fortunes of the issuing companies. The effect on shares is likely to vary. Although higher rates will drive up companies’ borrowing costs, this could be offset by stronger economic growth that is likely to prove positive for corporate earnings. However, higher interest rates will also provide a boost for the pound,

which could have a negative effect on UK-based exporters once their profits are translated back into sterling. Meanwhile, shares in defensive companies that pay comparatively high dividends - for example, utility businesses - are viewed by some investors almost as a proxy for bonds, and are therefore less likely to benefit from an environment of rising rates. Conversely, socalled ‘cyclical’ companies, which tend to be relatively sensitive to the economic cycle, can perform better. Ultimately, an increase in interest rates is likely to present both threats and opportunities so it is worth taking the time to review your assets and liabilities with your financial adviser and ensure your portfolio is positioned to make the most of a rising rate environment and sufficiently diversified to minimise the potential effects of market volatility on long-term performance.

elinda Smith celebrates her thirtieth anniversary as a solicitor on the 15th November this year. She also celebrates over six years running “Belinda Smith & Co.” her own very successful, niche family law practice, with associate, Michele Fielding, at their offices in Thorpe Wood, Peterborough. Prior to setting up on her own, Belinda and Michele were both at Buckles Solicitors for over twenty years. Belinda hails from Grantham, where she went to Maggie Thatcher’s former school, and now lives in Bourne. Michele is a Deeping girl, now living in the Hamptons, Peterborough. Between them, Belinda and Michele have over fifty years’ experience in family law and their case loads include divorces, financial applications and settlements, cohabitation splits, child arrangement orders for residence and contact, pre-nuptial and cohabitation agreements and emergency measures, such as injunctions and occupation orders.

Belinda and Michele both have the specialist qualification in collaborative law, which is an option for family cases, to minimise the friction and conflicts that often occur during the traditional divorce process. Belinda has a particular expertise in children cases, being a long-standing member of the Law Society Children Panel and, for many years, representing parents and children in the arena of care proceedings. “Belinda Smith & Co.” does not have a legal aid franchise, but Belinda still represents foster parents and extended family members in care and adoption proceedings. Belinda also provides advice and representation in road traffic matters in Magistrate Court cases. If you have any legal problem that you think “Belinda Smith & Co.” could help you with, please telephone the office for free initial advice. “The Future’s Bright - The Future’s M-Fire”!

Safety Consultancy, Training and Installation Right here on our doorstep, in Bourne, is one of the leading fire safety consultancy and installation companies in the East Midlands. The recent move to their new premises on Roman Bank has enabled the small, (but perfectly formed) team of five to offer the customer, locally and nationally, a wider range of safety solutions than ever before. Martin Green, (known for years as “The Extinguisher Man”), has over twenty-five years’ experience in the fire safety industry, as technician, manager and trainer. It was he who formed M-Fire in 2011 and was soon joined by Daniel Green, another highly experienced technician, manager and assessor. Daniel also brings a wide range of first-aid and practical safety know-how to the firm, being a volunteer St John’s Ambulance attendant and a Community First Responder for L.I.V.E.S. A particularly impressive website, (www.m-fire. co.uk), recently enlarged and bursting with all the technical jargon you’d ever need, is clearly a sign that this firm are “on the up” in terms of offering their clients, domestic and commercial, the very best. M-Fire Ltd. are able to provide the complete 40 40

fire protection package, from detection to containment, to protect your business and your property from fire. This incorporates fire alarm and fire extinguisher design and installation, along with service and maintenance of both; emergency lights installation, service and maintenance; fire hose reel maintenance; dryriser testing; safety signs and the installation of the high quality “Fike” range of smoke detectors, (for which M-Fire Ltd are accredited installers). The second substantial string of this company’s bow is that of fire safety consultancy, where advice and recommendations are expertly provided, regarding fire risk-assessment, fire evacuation drills and community fire safety. In November, the company were proud to open their new offices and warehouse in Bourne. What the move also created, however, was a purposebuilt training centre, where fire- and first-aidM-Fire at-work training can now be offered. This can Bourn involve one day or three day first-aid courses, fire awareness training, manual handling courses and others. These courses could also be provided at the customer’s premises, if required. u Further details can be found on the website or by phoning 01529-241443

New Year IT Deals

The New Year sales will soon be upon us and there is bound to be the usual glut of IT equipment deals to get our heads around and of course, we have all that Christmas present cash to spend. To help you through the maze of deals that are likely to appear in your mailboxes I’d recommend looking for deals on the list of items below, all of which should be offered with incentives at one provider or another. fTesco HUDL2 tablet £129 or less: a superb Android tablet for the price. 8.3” screen, Dolby sound, front and back cameras, 8 hour battery life, 16Gb memory. Includes many of the features found on tablets costing over twice the price of this device. iKindle Fire HD 6 £79 or less: The ultra-lightweight Kindle runs on a powerful quad-core processor with 8GB of storage and a 6” HD (1280x800) touch display. Perfect for browsing the web, watching TV & Films, playing games and reading. Includes free unlimited cloud storage for all your Amazon-purchased content. f Pebble Charger £25 or less: These are already on offer and you may find them for under £15 at some locations. These devices are brilliant, one of my favourite pieces of technology. Once charged they hold that charge for weeks and can be used to plug into most tablets and/or phones to provide immediate charging for that device. Superb when travelling. g Pebble Smart Watch £99 or less: Pair this with your smart phone and you can see who is calling, texting, or emailing. Once fully charged has 7 days battery life. Water resistant to 50m, although don’t take your phone down to that depth! Fitness tracking features and other software apps available. Oh, and it also tells you the time. g Laptops with ‘Windows 8 with Bing™’ operating system (£200 or less): In an unusual move Microsoft have made a free version of Windows 8 available to PC system builders. This is called ‘Windows 8 with Bing’ and is essentially Windows 8 but with Microsoft’s Bing search engine set as the main search tool on the internet. With no royalties to pay Microsoft a number of system manufacturers already have laptops on the shelves at under £200. Look out for even more deals on these in the New Year. As an example for £199 you can buy a HP 15.6” laptop with a quad processor, 4Gb of memory and a 500Gb hard disk, webcam and Radeon graphics card. Superb for that youngster off to university or for project work in secondary school. Safe Local Trades raise over £6,720 for Age UK Peterborough During September and October each year, Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades organise fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. This year, there were several skydives organised and a team took part in the annual Great Eastern Run. All events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said: “We would like to thank each and every volunteer who took part as well as everyone who sponsored them in their events, all of which helped to raise an amazing £6,720.25 for this very worthy local charity.”

Eileen went on to say, “We would particularly like to thank Axiom Housing Association for getting involved and helping to raise over £1,600. In addition to the skydives that two members of staff took part in, dozens of individual sheltered accommodation schemes raised money by having coffee mornings, quizzes, and the like—it shows great community spirit to know that elderly people were raising money for their counterparts”. David Bache, Chief Executive of Age UK Peterborough, said “We are so delighted with this excellent achievement by Eileen and the fabulous volunteers. This is the largest amount we have ever raised in one campaign so my sincere thanks go to Eileen Le Voi, Axiom Housing Association and all the wonderful volunteers who make such a difference to the work we do to help and support older people in Peterborough. Over the past few years, Eileen and Safe Local Trades have helped raise over £25,000— no other local company has ever raised this amount for our charity and we are enormously grateful.”

| In the hot seat

Elaine Radley Head Teacher, Essex Girl and Lover of Horses, Frocks and Mr Darcy

The first “Hot-Seater” of 2015 is Bourne Westfield Primary Academy’s Head teacher, Mrs Elaine Radley. Her early fascination with genetics, stemming from her father being an identical twin, led Elaine into a B.Sc. Honours degree in Genetics and Microbiology from University College, London. This she augmented with a P.G.C.E. from Goldsmiths, and so entered the teaching profession. Married to Stuart, and describing herself as a “proud mum of two gorgeous children, Matthew (11) and Georgia (9)”, Elaine and her family are passionate about horses and country pursuits, tending to a small menagerie of their own at home. 1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?

I was born in Harlow, making me a good “Essex Girl” at heart, but perhaps not quite a ‘Towie’! My favourite childhood memory is going, as a three year old, to pick up my new-born baby sister from hospital. I got to carry her home in the back of a taxi – obviously, this was well before the days of baby seats or rear seat belts in cars!

2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Many people have influenced my life and continue to do so, but probably the biggest influence has come from my parents. Both worked incredibly hard to achieve their goals. My mother became a head teacher and my father a chartered accountant. They together instilled in me that strong work ethic and determination which I have to this day.

3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? I have always been fascinated with life in the past, particularly the Tudor and Georgian 54

D I S C O V E R I N G

periods. I would love to explore the views of one of the most powerful women in history, Elizabeth I. Why did she never marry? What did she think of her father, Henry VIII? And, as I am an old romantic at heart and love some of the literature from the Georgian period, I would love to meet some of Jane Austen’s wonderful characters - after all, who would not want to have dinner with Mr Darcy?

4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS?

Loving, determined, passionate, honest and fair.

5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I would have more clothes shops because, as a busy mum, I rarely get time to go further afield and I love a new frock!

6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?

As a sixteen year old I worried too much about what my peers thought and not about what mattered. I would tell my 16 year old self to work harder but worry less!

why not try a family safari?

A family holiday is a treasure to be remembered when the children are grown up and have fled the nest. Going on a family friendly safari you will be guaranteed to amass a beautiful store of family memories. Enjoy the look of wonder and excitement on your children’s faces as they see wild animals in their natural environment for the first time. Family safaris offer wildlife adventures for young and old plus the memorable times spent as a family. A favourite Kenyan family safari is the Kili Safari, which is a short itinerary packed with interest, providing an exciting overview of Kenya and her wildlife for children and adults alike. There are no age restrictions for children at the lodges, which makes this an

ideal choice for a child friendly, family safari. The safari starts in Amboseli, dominated by the imposing backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Amboseli is home to an abundance of mammals and over 400 species of birds. The flat and dusty landscape provides good opportunities to see a large variety of wildlife including buffaloes, lions, gazelles, cheetahs, wildebeest, zebras and vast herds of elephants wandering freely. Then your family safari travels to Lake Naivasha where there is plenty for all the family to do. Take the children horse riding or cycling around this stunning scenery. Finally your family travels into the world-famous Masai Mara. Both old and young will be totally captivated by the amount and variety of wildlife inhabiting the Masai Mara. One of the world’s most enthralling wildlife theatres. The reserve plays host to countless species, including the ‘big five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) and the incredible spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration. The Reserve borders Tanzania and is the prime place to view the famous wildebeest migration. The Mara River running north to south through the reserve separates the west from the east. The area has an amazing concentration of wildlife, particularly when the migratory wildebeest and zebras are grazing on the lush plains from June to October. Why not add an optional beach break in Mombasa at the end of your safari?

“Chest to the ground for better ball striking” When we miss-hit shots, we are often told that we moved, or we lifted our head. Correct? This is not the whole truth though. It is, in fact, our body that has moved, causing the head to move and so it gets the blame. If you focus on your chest and keep it pointing to the ground (as it is at the address position) through the swing, especially at the impact zone, your ball striking will improve. A quick drill that you can use to help understand this, and then use to improve your technique, just needs any one of your golf clubs, and can be used indoors. Firstly, place the club across your shoulders and hold it firmly in place. (It should now be parallel to the ground.) Now adopt your set-up posture and make your backswing rotation. You should notice that the shaft of the club now points the grip to the ground. Here is the key move to improve your ball striking - As you simulate the downswing, make sure the grip stays pointing to the ground, as you turn your

chest and body towards impact. At the ‘impact position’, your chest will now be pointing to the ground again and, of course, as you move past the ‘impact position’, it is now the club head that points towards the ground. Why will doing this help? In poor strikes, if we think of this exercise, when we start the downswing, we would notice that the grip of the club starts moving upwards instead of staying to the ground. You will then also notice that your body position has changed and your head has moved. The result is that the arc of the club has now changed and it will come into impact on adifferent path, causing the miss-hit. I hope you enjoy this tip to improve your game, and remember golf lessons are available in Bourne Golf Studio to help you enjoy your golf more. | Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”

Have you ever been the victim of a crime and felt that you have not really had a chance to express your feelings? Do you want to confront the suspect to tell them how their behaviour has impacted on your life and that of your family? Do you feel that your voice is lost in the loud, cumbersome machinery of the Criminal Justice system? If you answered ‘Yes’, you may be interested to know that there is a project in Lincolnshire called “Restorative Justice”. As defined by the Restorative Justice Council: “Restorative processes bring those harmed by crime or conflict, and those responsible for the harm, into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward.” When a Police Officer attends an incident, they will assess the severity of any offence that has occurred. They will discuss the harm caused and ascertain the victim’s wishes. If the offender has been identified and accepts responsibility, they may be dealt with by way of Restorative Resolution, rather than entering the Criminal Justice system. In this case, the officer will include all those involved to identify an appropriate and proportionate outcome. It may be that the victim only wants that person to make

some form of apology for what has occurred, or to offer some appropriate practical help.

Community Neighbourhood Conferencing

In Criminal Cases where the offender enters the criminal justice system, it is essential that the victim can still access a restorative intervention, alongside that criminal justice process. A formal restorative conference may be offered which allows the victim the chance of asking questions directly of those responsible and to describe how they have been affected by the offence. The conference gives the offender the chance to see the victim as a person, recognise the impact of their behaviour, and to consider the possibility of making amends. The conference allows those involved to meet in a safe environment, facilitated by a trained practitioner. In no way does a restorative conference interfere with the processes of the criminal justice system. Community Neighbourhood Conferencing can also be used for non-crime matters, such as neighbourhood disputes, resolving conflict before it turns into crime, and building community ownership of solutions. It is an effective approach to dealing with anti-social behaviour, graffiti, noise and criminal damage, enabling people to understand the impact of their behaviour on others. It is important to recognise that a victim may wish to access restorative intervention at very different stages to deal with the harm caused to them. If, whilst the matter is being dealt with by the police, the victim wishes a conference to be considered, then trained volunteers in all areas of the county, supported by local officers, will take that forward for them. If this is you, and you want to consider restorative justice, then speak to the police officer who is dealing with your incident. For more information, have a look at http:// www.justice.gov.uk/victims-and-witnesses/ restorativejustice or http://www.restorativejustice. org.uk/, or contact Lincolnshire Police on 101.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Discovering...

...Bourne Hostel

T

by Rex Needle

he imposing Regency mansion at No 46 West Street was built in 1830 by the Bell family of solicitors and is now Grade II listed but is best known as home to dozens of children in the years following the Second World War. The last member of the family to live there was Major Cecil Walker Bell who held many public offices but when he retired and left the town in 1940, the house was bought by Kesteven County Council and used as dormitory accommodation for evacuees who had been sent here to escape the bombing of Hull. When the war ended in 1945, the council converted the building into a home for problem children known as Bourne Hostel. During the ensuing years, over 200 children arrived, many frightened and away from home for the first time, but here they found the warmth of family life under the matron, Mrs Pat Schmidt, a state registered nurse, and her husband, Lou, who was later appointed master. They ran the home for almost 30 years, giving confidence and hope to boys and girls in care who were orphans, maladjusted or had been emotionally damaged by domestic upheavals and marriage breakdowns. When the hostel closed, Pat and her husband retired to Spain and before she died in April 2014, aged 83, she remembered the heart-

breaking but rewarding role with which she had been entrusted. There were early battles for more staff and improved accommodation but her relationship with the children became far more important and she soon became known as Auntie Pat. “I was particularly anxious to establish a family atmosphere to give them stability”, she said, “and this was achieved after I persuaded them to regard myself and my husband as a friendly aunt and uncle, an approach that seemed much nicer than the previous Mr and Mrs, and this family intimacy proved to be highly successful and continued until we closed. “We had about 225 children during my time there and I was lucky enough to see the fruits of my labour and feel a certain pride that at least some of my girls, as I called them, have married and had families who have been loved and cared for in the way their mothers were at Bourne House.” The hostel closed in 1985 when it was acquired by property developers who turned it into a complex of retirement flats and maisonettes in 1988-89 and it remains an attractive part of the street scene.

Question: What is Important in Our Life? Answer: Family and Sleep! As another new year rolls in and we return to our workplaces, it is worth just asking, “What are our priorities in life?” Recent research would seem to indicate that the “Greed is right, Greed works” mantra, as typified by Gordon Gekko, the 1980’s stockbroker in the film “Wall Street”, has gone out of fashion. Instead of material achievements, the study, by a leading holiday chain, found that “sleep, family, exercise and healthy eating” have now become our priorities. The research cited a survey from the 1980s that found 33% of respondents believed a flashy car, such as a Ferrari was a “key indicator of success”. Among the 1300 Britons questioned for the latest study, this had now fallen to 2%! One third of the Eighties’ respondents considered a large salary and a high-powered job as “key to being seen as successful”. In 2014, however, only 10% say wealth and an “important job” are signs of success, with 35% believing it to be wiser to “put money aside”, rather than spend it. Today’s top goals were found to be spending time with our family, achieving a better work/ life balance, keeping healthy and getting more sleep!

monthly advice from Double and Megson

Many Happy Returns! Be Clear on the Sale of Goods Act Shops are under no legal obligation to exchange or refund a gift, unless a) it was faulty when bought, b) is not as described, or c) is not fit for purpose. If it doesn’t fit you properly or you just don’t like the gift, you have no automatic right to return it. If the gift you have purchased is faulty, you have a statutory right to a refund or replacement, whether the goods were bought in a shop or from a market stall .The Sale of Goods Act says the goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. You may come up against opposition when trying to return faulty goods, for example being told that a receipt is always required, or being advised by the retailer to contact the manufacturer. However, this is not the case. If a product is faulty, a proof of purchase will suffice – perhaps a bank statement. Don’t be persuaded to go to the manufacturer - the retailer is responsible. Don’t delay in checking your goods and reporting any defects, as you are entitled to a reasonable period of time to examine the goods, before you are considered to have accepted them. What is “reasonable” depends on the product and how obvious the fault is.

64

D I S C O V E R I N G

If you want to return something to a shop or market stall just because you don’t like it, don’t need it or it just doesn’t fit, the retailer has no legal obligation to take it back or refund you. However, many retailers have a returns policy that allows you, the customer, to take items back and get refunds, exchanges or vouchers, as long as the items returned are unused and in perfect condition, with their undamaged, original packaging. The individual store’s returns policy should be checked, as some products may be excluded from it, for hygiene reasons, or the store may impose time limits for returning non-faulty products. At Christmas, some retailers offer special extended refund periods, meaning you may have longer than you think. A store’s returns policy is usually displayed on receipts, on signs in-store or online. You could also ring the shop’s customer services line to find out details of its returns policy. Shops don’t have to have a returns policy, but if they have one, they must stick to it.

Calling all parents!

We are Home-Start and we are here to help Do you know what it’s like to have a crying baby, a toddler whose behaviour is uncontrollable, a child who won’t go to school? Have you ever struggled with weaning, potty training, bedtime or morning routines, mealtimes, supermarket tantrums? You’re not alone. All families experience difficulties from time to time and Home Start South West Lincolnshire is a charity organisation providing support and friendship during those periods when we feel isolated and unsure. For families, we are offering ‘drop in’ sessions at The Centre in Elsea Park every other Monday from 11.00am to 1.00pm - starting on 2nd February. This is an opportunity for you to come along and talk to our trained staff about those aspects of being a parent we only discover after we’ve had children! There is no cost and conversations are conducted in confidence. For families requiring an extended period of

support we offer regular home visits by trained volunteers who are themselves parents. For anyone wishing to become a Volunteer, our next volunteer preparation course begins on 25th February 2015 and then from 9.00am to 3.00pm every Wednesday for six weeks. If you would like to find out more about volunteering with Home Start we are holding a recruitment day on Tuesday 13th January 2015 from 10.00 until 2.00pm at The Centre in Elsea Park. If you are a parent and feel that your experience could benefit others and would like to commit some of your time to supporting a family, why not call in for a chat? “Home-Start have been a huge support and without them I hate to think how our life would be. My children are happier and I am able to cope better with the stresses life throws at me.” Home-Start Family Feedback

monthly advice from Tom Ingram

“Speeding in Bourne”

appy New Year to all “Discovering Bourne” readers! Several months ago, the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership invited Bourne Town Council to consider the use of movable speed information signs that can be continually repositioned in different parts of Bourne. This was an initiative which they had launched across the entire county. There are different types of sign available, but the clever ones, called “Reactive Signs”, can measure an approaching vehicle’s speed and flash it up on a display – you see these working to good effect in towns and villages all over Lincolnshire. I made some enquiries about the material costs alone to purchase two of these signs, which would then enable them to be strategically placed, to help protect our 3000+ pupils who attend our local schools; this cost came to approximately £7000.

The last I personally heard from the Council was that, not only were they not convinced about how effective these speed signs are at reducing traffic speed, but they were also questioning whether there are in fact any speeding motorists going through Bourne anyway! There was talk about a possible formal survey. This was all many months ago, last year. What is your opinion? Do you believe that there are drivers who are not complying with the 30mph speed limit, as they drive through Bourne? Do you experience, like I regularly do on North Road, as I walk my dog, motorists not giving way to pedestrians using the zebra crossings? I would be interested to hear your opinion. Please e-mail me on info@BIGTOM.org.uk or text me on 07894 262 718
