ell, 2015 is well and truly with us, as we’re already focusing on Valentine’s Day in this bulging edition of your “favourite freeby”! It’s really heartening to hear that there are lots of you who are finding, month on month, the magazine getting more interesting, with an even wider range of features and articles covered. Thank you for this endorsement of our team’s dedication, and long may it continue! The new year has seen Bourne’s Exeter Veterinary Practice come under new ownership and you can read about it here. The club profile has the snooker club in its sights, whilst an “Old Brunnian” tells us of his life globetrotting in the oil industry. This month, we begin a property feature, where local experts will be offering their insightful look at the property market. Enjoy the read, and thank you to all of our contributors. May your Valentine’s Day be everything you dream about!! (see below!)

Welcome to “February fill-dyke” and, to coin an old adage, “February fill dyke, be black or be it white; be it white, ‘tis better to like.” (In other words, rain and snow are both welcome this month, although snow is preferable.) Early showings of snowdrop and celandine, with daffodils not far behind, so I’m not too sad if we’ve already had our winter’s complement of snow. In this edition, you can peruse a plethora of interesting features, such as the nine Bourne Grammar School students with Oxbridge aspirations, the phenomenal response to the Christmas “Meningitis Memory Tree” and a brief history of Saint Valentine’s Day, which takes me to my “monthly mirthful moment” …… Just before Valentine’s Day, she told him that she’d just had a dream about a gorgeous diamond necklace. He said, “Mmm, we’ll have to see about that then.” Next day, handing her a small, lovingly wrapped package, she melted into his arms, but her mood soon changed when, opening it, she found a little book, entitled, “What Your Dreams Mean”! Peter Godfrey Bourne Boy to Globetrotting Oil Man

This month, we hear from a “Bourne-born and bred” adventurer, whose passport reads like an A to Z of obscure and dangerous hot-spots. Oil Company Construction Superintendent, Peter Godfrey, left Bourne Grammar School in the late 1960s and studied at Leicester Polytechnic, before working for Lyall and Co. in Bourne and Peterborough City Council. Joining the oil and gas industry saw his passport start to take a hammering, with employment provided by Exxon-Mobil, Shell, Chevron-Texaco, British Gas and British Petroleum. He has worked in Angola, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Botswana, Brunei, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Yemen. Besides these exotic sounding locations, his wanderlust has taken him to many more foreign destinations. High on his list of “extraordinary events” was being hijacked and held hostage in Nigeria - but soon released, when they found out that he wasn’t worth a lot! Peter has been shot at four times and is still here to tell the tale, (clearly, not so full of girth in those days!) A “brush with royalty” occurred when he was involved in refurbishing a building and installing a special toilet for Her Majesty the Queen, on her visit to Bahrain. Nowadays he enjoys dining out with good company, and is considering writing a book about his travels and exploits, that is if he can stay in Bourne long enough, when retirement arrives! Image: Peter Godfrey alongside some of the friendlier people he's met on his travels.

1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?

I was born in the family house in Ancaster Road in Bourne. Hardly a “favourite”, but one wellembedded memory was walking from the primary school in Abbey Road to the, then unheated, swimming pool on the Abbey Lawn. Being forced to jump in and getting out, blue with cold, would probably be classed as child cruelty today!

2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

A chap called Duncan Gilchrist gave me my first opportunity in the oil and gas industry and for that I’ve been forever grateful.

3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? Michael Palin, so that we could swap travel 4

D I S C O V E R I N G

stories, and Tommy Cooper who, in my opinion, was the greatest comedian ever.

4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Adventurous, unorthodox, impatient, low tolerance.

5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Bourne, like a lot of other places, can no longer really be called a “market town” and it seems to have lost its identity. Investment is required to re-invent the town and put it back on the map, otherwise it will remain a Peterborough overspill housing estate.

6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU? Get a skill, trade or profession and use it as a stepping stone to move on.

Valentine’s Day - February 14th

What’s That All About Then?

Take a brief romantic stroll through the centuries, up to today’s commercial orgy of flowers, jewellery and chocolates. a In Ancient Rome, February 13th, 14th and 15th were celebrated as “Lupercalia”, a pagan fertility festival, seen as a basis for a celebration of love on this date. a AD 289 - A Christian, Valentine of Rome, is martyred under Emperor Claudius. While in jail, this priest is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter's sight. He is later said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying “From your Valentine”, but this is apocryphal. a AD 496 - Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be “St Valentine's Day”, a Christian feast day to match the still-popular pagan festival of Lupercalia. a AD 1382 - Geoffrey Chaucer writes his Parlement of Foules (or “Parliament of Fowls”), which is widely taken to be the first linking of St Valentine's Day to romantic love. Celebrating the engagement of Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia, he wrote: “For this was on St. Valentine's Day/ When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate”. a AD 1601 - St Valentine's Day has entered the popular consciousness to the extent that Shakespeare mentions it in Ophelia's lament in “Hamlet”: “To-morrow is Saint Valentine's day,/All in the morning betime,/And I a maid at your window,/To be your Valentine.”

a In 1797 – “The Young Man’s Valentine Writer” is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and, as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine's Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to mass-produce them. a Mid-1980s - The commercialisation continues: noting the sales effect on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine's Day as a time for giving jewellery and so the “tradition” takes off. a AD 2015 - An estimated 1 billion St Valentine's Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most cardheavy celebration, after Christmas.

a Mid-18th century - The passing of love-notes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine's Day card as we know it today. Early ones are made of lace and paper. 6

Mod ‘N’ Ink

New Premises - Same High Standards! The sustained demand for tattoos has seen a local firm move, in early January, to new premises, literally ten times the size of its original site in a former teddy bear shop! Lee Black now welcomes customers to his Mod ’N’ Ink studio above Fenland Carpets in Bourne’s South Street. With over twenty-two years’ experience in the business, Lee continues to stress the importance of a hygienic approach to his art. To this end, his is the only tattoo shop in the local area offering 100% new and disposable equipment on every tattoo, (no recycling and sterilising equipment here). As a welcome “hello” to customers, old and new, Lee is offering a 15% discount on all tattoos throughout February.

Stepping into the big time Stamford and Bourne shoe store North Shoes is in the running for two prestigious national accolades. The family firm has been shortlisted in two categories at the 2015 Footwear Industry Awards – “Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year” and “Children’s Independent Retailer of the Year”. It’s the fourth year North Shoes – they have shops at 2 Red Lion Square, Stamford, and 18 North Street, Bourne – have been shortlisted for the awards, recognised as the shoe retail industry’s ‘Oscars’. They are previous winners of the “Independent Family Retailer of the Year” and “Ladies’ Independent Retailer of the Year” titles. The 2015 winners will be announced at a Gala Evening at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull on February 15th, attended by between 400 and 500 people. There are four other rival shoe stores up against North Shoes in both categories and James North, the fifth generation to head up the independent family firm, said: “We’re delighted to be shortlisted. “The awards recognise outstanding performance and just to be shortlisted alongside some of the 14

D I S C O V E R I N G

biggest names in shoe retail is an honour for us. “It is recognition of our fitting service – all of our staff are trained by the Society of Shoe Fitters – and the fact that we value traditional customer service. “We’ll literally `go the extra mile’ for them, because we even go into old people’s homes to help the residents select their shoes. We treat people how we would want to be treated.” North Shoes, who also have a store in Westgate, Peterborough, were highly commended in the “Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year” category at last year’s awards. A total of 23 accolades will be presented at this year’s event, which is organised by the British Footwear Association.

The Meningitis Memory Tree “On the 13th Day of Christmas…”

We’ve all heard about “the partridge in a pear tree”, but what about a dove in a Christmas tree? Mid-January, and the tree in Crown Walk is still there, festooned with hundreds of colourful bows – all because a new inhabitant is not quite ready to, literally, “flee the nest”. December 2014 witnessed a phenomenal response to the annual meningitis appeal and £425 was raised by the generous public, (up from £232 last year!) Bows, costing 50p. were available from Stephanies the Florist, and continued to be attached to the tree into the new year. However, a dove had decided to call it her home, her one egg hatched and the bouncing fledgling looks just about ready to flit – a touching post-script to the main item on the agenda, that of raising awareness and money, to the memory of baby, Alexander Pateman, whose

tragic death to meningitis prompted mum, Hayley Pateman, to produce this annual tribute. Hayley and Stephanie thank everyone for the fantastic response this year, and hope Mrs. Dove will be back to oversee next year’s proceedings!

Congratulations to Molly Henderson. Winner of a digital camera from Gordons Photographic Bourne.

Wild Heart Café The Word is Out!

Bourne’s best-kept secret is being threatened ….by the well-deserved, increasing popularity of The Wild Heart Café. Tucked away in the Angel Arcade, off North Street in Bourne, this wonderful café/ music shop has been shortlisted as one of the three category finalists in Lincolnshire Life’s County Cuisine Awards. The presentation evening of the Lincolnshire Food and Drink Awards, 2015, will be held on February 3rd and proud owners, Simon and Sally Burn, are enormously grateful for the host of satisfied customers who will have nominated the Wild Heart Café for this prestigious event. Why not seek out this little gem of an eatery? You won’t be disappointed! February 2015 | D I S C O V E R I N G

Sunshine State

Why Florida is the Perfect Family Destination Make exuberant Florida your family playground and immerse yourselves in high octane adventures followed by relaxation in peaceful backwaters and on endless sandy beaches.

SeaWorld’s Aquatica and Wet n’ Wild®. You can swim with sharks in Typhoon Lagoon, plunge through a tank of dolphins in Aquatica and, for those with kids, Blastaway Beach at Wet n’ Wild® is the biggest family play area in Florida.

Need a rest after all this excitement?

Got kids? Love to travel?

Days in Orlando overflow with exciting endeavours. Walt Disney works his theme park magic, Jaws lurks hungrily at Universal Studios... adventures that will have children beaming with joyful amazement – an outburst of colourful characters engaging them at every turn. If you have young children, Walt Disney World Resort is the perfect place for you. Encompassing parks such as Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach and the instantly recognisable Magic Kingdom, it’s an abundance of fun-filled theme parks catering for a range of ages. Kids will love meeting and greeting various Disney cast members and the rides range from gentle to relatively thrilling, dependent on the age of the child. Slightly older children, who enjoy a thrill ride or two will love Universal’s Islands of Adventure® .With a plethora of rides, you’ll be sure to find something for everyone. On Marvel Super Hero Island® you’ll experience the 3-D thrills of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man®, feel the rage of The Incredible Hulk Coaster®, and reach new heights of terror on Doctor Doom’s Fearfall®. There are four major waterparks in the area, Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, 18

D I S C O V E R I N G

Florida is the ideal place to have a two centre holiday, after the kids (and big kids) have enjoyed the theme parks – just relax and explore the rest of Florida. Florida is about so much more than theme parks. The sunshine state has attractions by the bucket-load and your Florida holiday needn’t be centred entirely around the next big thrill ride. There are plenty of non-Disney things to see and do in Orlando so even if you’re confined to the theme parks for your accommodation, there’s no need to stick to the resort when it comes to activities and days out. Why not visit Gatorland for some up close and almost too personal encounters with some alligators? Or take a scenic ride through the swamplands with Boggy Creek Airboat Rides? Orlando even has a worldclass collection of Tiffany glass at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, so you can get in some culture between rollercoasters. Outside of Orlando, the real Florida begins, a land of expansive swamplands, sweeping whitesand beaches and a lively South Americaninspired culture. Head to Miami to see the most complete collection of art deco buildings anywhere on the planet and feast on Cuban delicacies. Continue south to the Keys to taste the original key lime pie and swim with dolphins. Go west for fabulous seafood and unforgettable sunsets at St Pete Beach and Clearwater. Or head north to discover the undiscovered resorts of the northwest gulf coast where traditional Southern hospitality meets stylish beachside living.

Bourne | February 2015

The possibilities are endless - and so are the accommodation options

In Miami the place to stay is the W, an ultramodern palace of a hotel where service is second to none and every room has a beach view. In the Keys, choose the Hilton Key Largo Grande Resort to keep the kids occupied with nature trails and watersports, and on the west coast, check in to the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort for their kids’ activity programme and adjacent children’s playground. Wherever you choose to head for in Florida you’re sure to discover that the state’s charming laidback style rules the roost. You’ll find rooms decorated with understated opulence, casual cafes and restaurants serving sumptuous local delicacies and swimming pools which stretch right to the beach. For a family holiday there’s no better destination, you and your kids will love Florida family fun! ! Having travelled extensively around Florida a number of times and exploring the region in depth, I know all the good places to go and the right hotels for every budget. For guidance and advice on your next Florida holiday call me to chat and let me tailor a holiday to suit you…

The Six Piece Choir was awarded Gold and the Year 1/2 Choir achieved Silver. In other categories, the Jazz Band were awarded Gold, the Rock Band won Silver and the String Band were “Highly Commended”. The Vocal Duet and Quartet were also awarded Silver.

Another Gold for Westfield

Bourne Westfield Primary Academy was absolutely delighted with their recent success at the Bourne Rotary Young Musician of the Year Competition, held at Bourne Academy on Sunday 17th January. This year, additional categories were entered and amazing results achieved.

Music Co-ordinator at the school, Rebecca Beavis, commented, “It was lovely this year to diversify, and enter categories not previously explored. The children have worked incredibly hard, and it is fantastic to see our Six Piece Choir and Jazz Band go through to the next round in Thrapston on 7th March.” Headteacher, Elaine Radley, added, “We are delighted with this recent success. Music plays an important part in the life of children at Westfield, and this success is testament to that. The children sing and play beautifully and it is an absolute pleasure to listen to them.”

A “Pain in the Foot” lately?

Over the past month, I have found myself treating more foot problems than normal. There are many different kinds, but plantar fasciitis seems to be all the rage!

What is the plantar fascia?

Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath

The plantar fascia is a form of connective tissue which is found on the sole of the foot under the skin, spanning from the heel bone towards the base of the toes. It happens to be the thickest fascia in the body and plays an essential role in our ability to move, by acting like an elastic band that propels us forward.

How do I know if I have plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fascia pain is often felt locally near to the front of the heel, as though you are “stepping on a stone” or it could be felt as a burning sensation within the arch of the foot. Pain can be at its worst with the first few steps of the morning, or if high-heeled shoes are worn.

What can trigger it?

aRepetitive jumping or sustained, inclined walking. aInappropriate foot wear. Running shoes, designed for predominantly forward motion and not for rapid changes in direction, such as in keep-fit classes, may allow the heel bone to roll inwards too much. This can flatten the arch and stress the plantar fascia. Some shoes (I’m thinking of those trendy, ballet style ones) and some wellington boots (worn on those recent, winter walks) may have little shock absorbing ability and minimal amounts of arch and heel support, which could lead to over stressing the underside of the foot. aOld ankle sprains, that are still troublesome at times, may mean that some of your lower leg muscles (peronei), that usually support the arch, are perhaps still too weak, allowing the arch to fall too much. aTight calf muscles and Achilles tendons, from a lack of stretching or, perhaps, years of wearing high heeled shoes. aA stiff big toe.

What happens?

condition. It’s more degeneration, and involves scar tissue formation, micro tears and fragmentation of the fascia ….. and it’s painful!

How is it fixed?

Treatment can work really well, but can take a while, which is quite frustrating for the sporty individuals out there. Depending on the stage of injury, Trigger point therapy, deep friction, and specific sustained stretching are all beneficial. I show my patients stretches, using a golf ball, and exercises to strengthen the foot muscles. Kinesiology tape (the colourful tape seen stuck to a growing number of sportsmen) can often give rapid relief and making sure that the joints of the foot, especially the big toe, move correctly is very important. Of course, we mustn’t forget to check footwear suitability. For more information, or if you think we could help with anything else, please give us a call …… and mention “Discovering Bourne”.

Despite the name, it is not an inflammatory

Feet and Diabetes

It is important to look after your feet if you have diabetes. Following the BBC’s recent diabetes programme on their Breakfast News show, our diabetes specialist podiatrist, Rachael Baker, has put some foot care tips together for you. As diabetes can reduce the blood supply to your feet and cause a loss of sensation, called peripheral neuropathy, it can mean that you don’t notice if your foot is sore or injured. Foot problems can take longer to heal as a diabetic, but complications can be reduced with good blood sugar control.

Footcare Tips:

aSee a podiatrist/chiropodist at least once a year for a diabetes foot check. aKeep your feet clean. Wash them daily, but don't soak them for longer than five minutes, as this will make the skin dry. aApply cream, but not between the toes. aCut or file your nails regularly. aGet corns and hard skin treated by a podiatrist /chiropodist and never attempt this

yourself. aCheck your feet daily for any breaks in the skin, colour changes or swelling. If you notice any, seek treatment. aAvoid walking barefoot - if you do, always check your feet afterwards. aWear shoes that fit well and don't rub. aSeek treatment from your podiatrist / chiropodist or doctor, if foot injuries or blisters do not heal. aMany foot problems with diabetes can be avoided by taking extra care of your feet and good diabetes control.

“It’s the Lidl Things that Count!” New Supermarket Proposed for Bourne

A new Lidl supermarket is being proposed for Bourne at the Gateway Park site, located at the junction of the A15 and the Bourne southern by-pass. The multi-million pound investment in the town is part of the supermarket chain’s expansion plans and offers significant economic benefits for the local community, principally through the generation of up to forty jobs. As well as this, the development has been positioned to deliver a small section of the eastern relief road which has long been an aspiration locally. This ensures that the development of the site protects the line of this prospective route, should it be progressed in the future. The supermarket would complete Gateway Park which has already seen a significant investment in the town, with the recently completed McDonald’s restaurant, Texaco filling station and the Marston’s public house, “The Sugar Mill”. Key stakeholders including Bourne Town Council and Thurlby Parish Council have been consulted on the proposals, and a public consultation event, held at the Corn Exchange on Wednesday 8thJanuary, attracted a large number of visitors to see the plans and talk to representatives from Lidl and developers, Temple Garth Ltd. From feedback received from both the public consultation event and ‘Gopetition’ online, it is apparent that the overwhelming response from

26

D I S C O V E R I N G

the local community is very much in favour of a Lidl supermarket coming to the town. Over 500 feedback forms were returned by visitors at the consultation event alone; these recorded 92.4% wanting the store, 6.2% having reservations but who were in favour and 1.4% against.

Following the consultation event, and in response to feedback received, Paul McSorley of Temple Garth said, “We are extremely grateful to all those people who have taken the time to consider the draft proposals for a new 1,286m2 Lidl supermarket at the Gateway Park site. As a result of the points raised, we are increasing parking numbers and looking at provision for cyclists, among a number of revisions made as a direct result of feedback received.” A spokesperson from Lidl added, “We were thrilled with the turnout for the consultation day, and the overwhelming positive response we have received from the local community to our proposal. We’re excited by the prospect of bringing one of our stores to Bourne to offer our fresh, quality produce and bring more choice to local residents.” Planning approval has been sought, with detailed plans submitted to South Kesteven District Council and the decision is currently awaited.

Neck Pain or Stiff Neck Neck pain is commonly associated with dull aching. Sometimes pain in the neck is worsened with movement of the neck or turning the head. Other symptoms associated with some forms of neck pain include numbness, tingling, tenderness and a sharp, shooting pain. The pain and stiffness usually gets better after a few days, and is not normally a sign of a more serious neck problem or underlying condition. You can get a painful or stiff neck if you sleep in an awkward position, use a computer keyboard for a prolonged period of time, or even from sitting in a draught. Anxiety and stress can also sometimes cause tension in your neck muscles, which can lead to pain in your neck.

Managing neck pain at home Whatever the cause of neck pain or a stiff neck, the advice is generally the same: carry on with your normal daily activities, keep active and take pain relief to relieve the symptoms if you feel you need to. See below for some more specific advice we give patients who attend here at Pulse Practice: t Take regular doses of pain relief from the chemist to control pain – pain relief-gel can be rubbed onto your neck as an alternative to taking tablets. Always follow the dosage instructions that come with the medication. t Try holding a hot water bottle or heat pack to your neck – this can help reduce the pain and any muscle spasms. t Sleep on a low, firm pillow at night – avoid using two pillows because it may force your neck to bend unnaturally. t Check your posture – bad posture can aggravate the pain and it may have caused it in the first place. t Avoid wearing a neck collar – there is no evidence to suggest that wearing a neck collar will help to heal your neck, and it is better to keep your neck mobile. t Avoid driving until the pain and stiffness have gone – it may prevent you turning your

head to view traffic. t If your neck is stiff or twisted, try some simple neck exercises– gently tense your neck muscles as you tilt your head up and down and from side to side, and as you carefully twist your neck from left to right. These exercises will help strengthen your neck muscles and gradually improve your range of movement. Whenever I am consulted by someone with neck stiffness, your neck will be examined and you’ll be asked some questions to help rule out any serious underlying damage or condition. We always refer you to your GP if the pain or stiffness does not improve after a few days and you are worried, or if you cannot control the pain using ordinary painkillers from the chemist and gentle prescribed exercise. Generally, most neck pain is caused by muscle spasm and nerve impingement, which can be treated successfully within a short time. If you would like exercises for a stiff neck please call Jo on 01778 426000 for a free copy. (Please mention “Discovering Bourne”).

| Golf tip

by Darren Game “Clap your hands for a squarer contact” If you want to hit straight shots, then the club has to come into the impact zone with the face of the club pointing in the direction that it is moving along, (this is known as a “square club face”). Here is a great winter drill, but it can be one to use all year round to help maintain a square contact. No club is needed for this one! Adopt your golfing set-up position with just your front or target arm hanging in front of you, (the left arm for right handed golfers.) Take the rear hand and put it next to the front hand. Now, keeping the front hand still, allow the rear hand to move away with the elbow folding, as if you were making a back-swing. From here, your aim is to clap the hands together, by moving the rear hand back to the static front hand. The better the clap, the squarer the contact was, which is exactly the same as you need to do with the golf club when hitting the ball. You can use this drill at anytime, anywhere. Why not try it before hitting each shot on the course? I hope you enjoy this tip to improve your game. Remember, golf lessons are available in Bourne Golf Studio to help you enjoy your golf more. Record Number of Oxbridge Offers for Bourne Students A record number of nine Bourne Grammar School students are celebrating, after having received a conditional offer of a university place at Oxford or Cambridge.

Meghan Bird, Josh Garnham, Henry Morley, Matthew Gutteridge, Hannah Fytche, Chiara Leadbeater, Alexandra Wilshaw, Alice Eva, Laura Baker, Jess Paul & Lewis Kelly (Academic Aspiration Team)

H

eadteacher, Jonathan Maddox, commented, “This wonderful news follows the flood of offers that our Year 13 students, who have made university applications, have been receiving recently. There have been some notable successes from students to study on very highly-selective courses at other universities, including Medicine and Veterinary Science; to receive an offer, in these subjects in particular, is a considerable achievement. Certainly, in my time at Bourne Grammar, this is the most successful our Oxbridge applicants have been in securing conditional offers. The students have worked exceptionally hard and have been very well assisted by our Academic Aspiration Coordinators (Mr Bainton, Mr Kelly and Mrs Paul), who support students who apply to Oxford, Cambridge and to all highly-selective courses at other universities, and Mrs Penny Hawkins, who provides guidance to all students who make UCAS applications.”

30

D I S C O V E R I N G

Successful applicant, Matt Gutteridge said, ”I’ve got a lot of work to do to meet my offer, so I’m trying to keep my feet on the ground, but it’s absolutely thrilling to be afforded such a fantastic opportunity.” Hannah Fytche added, “I am super happy - it’s absolutely amazing to receive an offer that so much effort has been put into. It is such a challenge to make it through the application and interview stage. I’m so excited for everyone who has taken on the challenge and succeeded! Exciting times!” Laura Baker told us, “I applied to Cambridge, thinking that the chances of me getting in were incredibly slim, due to the high standard of applications that they receive worldwide. So I was completely shocked when I opened the letter to discover that I had received an offer from my chosen college (St. Catharine’s). I can’t wait to take up my place in October.”

Sort out your Cohabitation

When married couples divorce, or civil partners break up, both parties have a legal right to maintenance and their share of assets, including property and inherited property. However, cohabiting couples have no such rights, regardless of the number of years they have been together.

assets, should the relationship break down. It can also cover how you will support your children, over and above any legal requirements to maintain them. The agreement can also be used to set out how you and your partner will manage your day-to-day

The increase in the number of cohabiting couples over the years has led to a rise in complex and often costly legal disputes when they split up. Drawing up a cohabitation agreement is a way of protecting you or your partner, if the relationship breaks down. A cohabitation agreement sets out who owns what, and in what proportion. It enables you to document how you will split your property, its contents, personal belongings, savings and other

finances while you live together, such as how much each contributes to rent or mortgage and bills, and whether you will take out life insurance on each other. Many people believe that a cohabitation agreement isn’t very romantic, but being realistic when you first get together can save emotional and financial heartache in the future. A cohabitation agreement lets you agree matters at the outset without the pressures that can arise if a relationship breaks down. It does not deal with finances in the event of the death of one of the parties. Making a will is the only way to ensure that your partner will inherit anything from you. Without a will, everything will go to your nearest blood relative, and the only option for a surviving partner who feels they have not received reasonable financial provision, is to make a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975.

| Your Finances

by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

How the pension reforms could affect your retirement The proposed pension changes from the 2014 budget have now had Royal Assent and rules relating to Defined Contribution pension (including Personal Pensions) will change with effect from April 2015. The new rules will allow people aged 55 and over to withdraw their pension savings at any time they choose, although there could be income tax implications. These reforms are good news for pension savers and people planning for retirement, as they introduce a much greater degree of flexibility and control over the use of pension savings. Ahead of the proposed changes, the government introduced a number of interim measures that came into effect on the 27 March 2014: If you are aged 60 or older and have a pension with a value of £10,000 or less, you can take all this money as a lump sum. You can do this up to three times if they each have a value of less than £10,000. Alternatively, if have a pension policy larger than £10,000 you can still take it as a lump sum, as long as the total value of all your pension funds (including any pensions in payment, but excluding the state pension) is below £30,000. 25% of the amount will be paid tax free, the rest will be taxed as earned income, which may make you a tax payer or take you into a higher tax bracket. Traditionally the way of turning pension savings into income was to buy a Lifetime Annuity which means swapping a lump sum for an income for the rest of your life, whilst this is a secure way of ensuring you have an income it is

very inflexible and once started cannot be altered in any way. Capped drawdown is an alternative way to provide income. It allows you to take the same 25% as a tax-free lump sum and to ‘draw’ income from your remaining savings. The amount of income you can draw is limited each year to ensure you do not exhaust your savings too soon. The maximum amount is set by the Government Actuaries Department and is dependent upon your age and gilt yields at that time. However, after 6th April 2015, the above rules will be replaced by an even more flexible proposal as anyone in a Defined Contribution plan and over the age of 55 will be able to take their entire pension pot as cash, again 25% is tax free and the remainder subject to income tax.

What do these changes mean for you? Annuities will still be available, both now and after the changes in April 2015, but if you don’t want to purchase an annuity or withdraw your money in a lump sum you will still be able to “draw the income” as and when required, this opens up many tax planning opportunities especially for those who want to draw an income before their state pension comes into payment. Personal Pensions can now be seen as a very tax efficient savings vehicle, most of the perceived disadvantages have now been taken away. As with all these things it is crucial that you get professional and independent financial advice before making any decisions.

| Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”

History is a subject I find fascinating. It often explains why we have what we have, and how our language has developed. One such example is the term ‘vandal’. Did you know this name originates from a European tribe who wandered across Europe and into North Africa, between 200BC to 600AD, often fighting many other tribes, even taking on, and defeating, the Romans? As a tribe, they were known to ruthlessly plunder and destroy property. Hence the name became synonymous with criminal damage. Criminal damage is an offence which I find

very baffling. Why do people want to destroy or damage property that doesn’t belong to them? What do they get out of such mindless vandalism? I find it especially frustrating when damage is caused to things such as the play park on the Wellhead in Bourne, which prevents young children from playing and enjoying being outdoors. If you don’t want to use the facilities provided, or admire the view, then go somewhere else. Don’t damage it so others can’t use it. Simple. The Criminal Damage Act, 1971 provides various offences relating to damage to property, most notably ‘criminal damage’ and ‘arson’

(criminal damage by fire). It also provides for the very useful preventative offence of ‘going equipped’, intending to destroy or damage property, which says that a person who has ‘anything’ in their possession intending to cause damage, or permit someone else to cause damage, is guilty of an offence. Section 1 of the Criminal Damage Act 1971 creates the offence of simple criminal damage, and says: ‘a person who without lawful excuse, destroys or damages any property, belonging to another, intending to destroy or damage any such property or being reckless as to whether any such property would be destroyed or damaged, shall be guilty of an offence.’ Damage does not have to be visible, or permanent if it affects the value or performance of the property. Simple damage such as mud on a wall may not be an offence if it is easily washed off; however, graffiti can be classed as damage if it takes time, effort and specialist equipment to remove it. Within the definition above is the word ‘reckless’ which can cause some confusion. To show that a person has acted ‘recklessly’ the prosecution need to prove that the offender was aware of a risk that already exists or would occur if they were to carry out an action and, that knowing this, it is unreasonable to take the risk. The risk of damage is subjective, based on an individual’s perceptions, feelings or intentions, as opposed to an objective recognition of that risk. For example, a child’s understanding of risk will be very different from an adult’s understanding of the same risk, and therefore the Courts need to take that into consideration. Penalties for criminal damage and arson vary from those at the bottom end of the spectrum to a maximum of life imprisonment, where life is endangered. To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Alternatively, if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at https://crimestoppers-uk.org/

“Your Pet’s Paradise” Love Them - Leave Them They’ll Love You For It!

We are very lucky in this area to be surrounded by lovely countryside, and so it is no surprise that many of us are dog owners, who thoroughly enjoy long walks in the local area. It is brilliant then, to hear of “Your Pet’s Paradise”, an up-and-coming dog home-boarding business branching out into the Bourne area. This time last year, Anna Bowen of Peakirk, had just taken on her first two dog-holiday-homes, and booked in her first four-legged customer. One year on, and her business is going from strength to strength, with many happy owners and, of course, their dogs! Anna has dog lovers in and around the local area who open their homes to dogs while their owners are away. The dogs are treated like one of the family; they thoroughly love the attention of having someone with them for most of the day and enjoy going on lovely long walks. The phrase, “They didn’t want to come home”, has cropped-up regularly in feedback e-mails that

Anna has received. At “Your Pet’s Paradise”, they carefully match the dogs to the right holiday home for them, ensuring that they have the best possible time and the owners have peace of mind. Our dogs can have holidays of their own - and not even need a passport! If you would prefer your dog to have a “home from home experience”, while you are away, then “Your Pet’s Paradise” could be just what you’re looking for!

Get your Puppy “On the Ball” with the “pup2perfection” Course are on offer, including demonstrations from “Team Strike”, guest speakers to cascade their wisdom, a training DVD and competitions. The full details Nikki is delighted to provide on request. “On the Ball” is a strong family team and includes mum, Elaine, and boyfriend, Matt, but the two who really matter though, are the chocolate working cockers, Woody and Strike, whose role as “well-trained and perfectly behaved working partners” (usually!) is crucial. Make sure you give your puppy the best possible start in life, by contacting Nikki and being blown away by her professional and passionate approach to all things canine!

The day when an award is instigated for the “most enthusiastic and totally dedicated new business owner, with a crystal clear focus on the future”, then my money would be piled high on Nikki Thurston, the ebullient driving force behind Bourne’s “On the Ball Dog Care and Training.” “My whole day revolves round my business and my dogs. I love every second of it”, the chirpy 26-year-old confides, as her exciting new plans are explained at length. Barely six months off the ground and already flying high, with classes full of contented owners and tail-wagging friends, Nikki has made enormous strides. Her business, operated from her Bourne home, offers a wide range of services to suit a dog’s every need, (licensed boarding facilities “chez Thurston”, home visits, dog walking, “day care and play days”, and obedience and agility training, with its essential equipment, on a field just out of Bourne). The natural progression was the introduction of the new “pup2perfection” course, which has just started. These classes are brought to you in association with renowned dog training expert, Lauren Langman from Devon Dogs. Nikki’s course comprises eight weekly sessions and provides knowledge, skills and the qualities needed to ensure that the owner is trained as much as the dog! A fascinating array of features

pup2perfection is unique, giving you the opportunity to be creative in your dog training and reaching your ultimate goals. pup2perfection’s main aims are to introduce:

Play!

Drive!

Focus!

Fun!

...into your training journey, giving you the knowledge and qualities you need not only to train your new family member but also to learn how to be a more effective trainer too!

I am super excited to share my ideas and knowledge with you and your puppy, Let the fun begin!

Alder Creatures Great and Small

Bourne has a new Vet!

A

pologies if the oblique reference to James Heriot and his famous veterinary escapades in the Yorkshire Dales has made you wince, but we have a new vet in town. Wayne Smith, currently running a thriving practice in Spalding, has converted the “Exeter Veterinary Centre” in Exeter Street, Bourne into “The Alder Veterinary Practice, Bourne”. It was my pleasure recently to meet the enthusiastic Mr. Smith and share anecdotes. (As the son of retired vet, Bob Schwarz, vetting seems to be part of my D.N.A.) Present incumbent, Roland Stevens, has now handed over the reins to Wayne, who brings a wealth of experience, (over thirty years, with the last seventeen of them in Spalding) and an enviable reputation in the profession, since having qualified from Liverpool University in 1982. Wayne is eager to commend the work of his good friend and erstwhile colleague, Roland, and, as the owner, he intends to maintain the present staffing and accommodation situation in Bourne. His emphasis on “the three C’s” sums up his approach to his work: the utmost CARE for the animal, clear COMMUNICATION with the owner and COMPASSION for both, all at an affordable price.

Special services

Not all veterinary practices are the same and Wayne can confidently offer the client a range of specific features, which goes a long way to explain why so many pet owners travel such distances to his practice in Spalding (and inundate his Facebook page with so many “likes”!) His offers include: 1) A guaranteed same day appointment for a sick pet if the owner considers it necessary. 2) The owner can remain with their pet pre- and post-operation, alongside any period of convalescence (for which Wayne can provide scientific evidence for its benefit to the animal). 3) Open visiting during daytime hours if a pet is “hospitalised” at the surgery. 4) A deferred payment scheme, (with no fees nor interest charges), for unexpected procedures/ operations. 5) Permanently low vaccine, neutering and identichip prices. 6) Monthly promotions. (Until the end of February, for example, he is offering dog and cat identichips for £6). 40

Wayne believes in the importance of CARE, COMMUNICATION and COMPASSION at an affordable price

Rescuing service The rescuing and re-homing of abandoned and injured cats has proved to be a highly successful and rewarding feature of the Spalding practice. Wayne intends to continue this policy in Bourne, where Griselda Winn and the staff already have much success in this field. Wayne will be partnered by his highly valued colleague, Deirdre Wilson, who offers twenty-five years of experience to the good folk of Bourne. Away from the surgery, life sounds frantic with Wayne and wife Anne, sharing with their five young children, the upkeep of 7 horses, 8 dogs, 14 cats, 2 rabbits, 28 guinea pigs, 6 chickens, 2 tortoises and a hamster. This is indeed one very caring, knowledgeable and ambitious vet and we wish him and the practice every success in Bourne.

| What’s in a Name?

Bourne...

“Bourne to Dance”, “Bourne 2 Clean”, “Bourne to Paint” - all well-established local businesses who have cleverly punned their way onto the scene with their catchy name. This month sees a new item where names, song titles and phrases like these will be featured, all of which include some reference to Bourne (or “born”). BORN TO RUN - Album by American mega-star Bruce Springsteen. Released almost forty years ago, on August 25th 1975, this was “The Boss’s” third studio album on the Columbia Records label. The title track and “Tenth Avenue Freeze Out” were released as singles, whilst “Thunder Road” and “Jungleland” were to become staples of Springsteen’s concert repertoire over the next four decades. The single, “Born to Run”, received enormous acclaim, largely due to the quality of its production and Springsteen’s lyrics, focusing on the coming of age of average teenagers and young adults in New Jersey, (“The Boss’s” home territory), and New York City. The album is notable for its use of introductions, piano rather than guitar, to set the tone of each track and for the Phil Spector-like “Wall of Sound” arrangements and production. Springsteen himself declared he wanted Born to Run to sound like Roy Orbison singing Bob Dylan, produced by Spector! “Born to Run”- no doubt a memorable line and one which the good folk of Bourn, Cambridgeshire, have been using since 2009, to publicise their 3k. and 10k. cross-country, fundraising runs, (“Bourn to Run”). Come on you Bourne Harriers - I’m sure you could do much better than that! 42

IS YOUR PROPERTY REGISTERED?

Call now for your free security survey

By Eileen Le Voi

Immobilise is a national property database that allows you to protect your possessions by registering them for free. Any valuables that have a unique serial number, such as mobile phones, can be registered online. These details are searchable by all UK Police Forces and form an extremely powerful tool in helping to identify and return recovered, lost or stolen personal property to its rightful owner. Virtually any item can be registered, from your TV, bicycle and camera to your toaster! What will you need to register? Simply go to www.immobilise.com to start the registration; you will need an e-mail address and the make, model and serial number of any property that you wish to record. It only takes a few moments to create an account and you can add property at your leisure. How do I find my serial number? Serial numbers can be different, depending on what item you want to register; on a mobile phone it would be your IMEI number which can be obtained from either looking underneath the battery, by typing *#06# into the keypad or by looking on the side of the box. On most other electrical items, it would be on the back or underneath the item, usually near a barcode. For bicycles, it would be the frame number which can be found in several locations on the frame. What happens once I’m registered? Should you lose or have any of your property stolen, and Police recover it, they can quickly establish who the real owner is and return it to them and, where appropriate, arrests can be made. The police have access to the National Mobile Property Register (NMPR) (www.thenmpr.com) which is the sister site of “Immobilise”, and second hand shops have access to the Checkmend database (www.checkmend.com/uk) which provides selected information about an item so they can check to ensure they are not receiving stolen goods. Can I highlight my property as stolen on my account? Yes, “Immobilise” has a feature for an owner to instantly update the property status on their account as lost or stolen. Remember, if you have had an item stolen, it is vital to report it to the police straight away by dialling 101. Also, if it is a mobile phone that you have lost or had stolen, then report it to you network provider as soon as possible, and they will block the handset so that no one else can use it.

| Legal advice by Hegarty Solicitors

Separation and Divorce

A Financial Battleground!

E

very year January and February bring an influx of married people seeking legal advice in relation to separation and divorce. Below is some advice which can save time and potentially legal costs for married persons wishing to deal with financial matters associated with separation and divorce. Whether your separation is amicable or acrimonious, in order for there to be meaningful negotiations capable of achieving a legally binding settlement, there will need to be a process which we family lawyers call ‘financial disclosure’. In most cases this is voluntary however if necessary it will be ordered by the Court. This process involves each party obtaining financial documentation in relation to their financial assets and resources, and then exchanging copies with one another. The idea behind it is that it puts both parties in a position where they are fully aware of each other’s financial resources. Quite often this is done via solicitors. However you can save yourself time and potentially legal costs by dealing with some, or all, of this process yourself. By providing your solicitor with your documents for financial disclosure at your first appointment with them they will be in a better position to advise you and you will have potentially saved them some work. By providing your solicitor with copies of both yours and your partner’s documents for financial disclosure at your first appointment with them, they will be in an even better position to advise you, and you will have potentially saved them a great deal of work. However beware that you must not help yourself to your partner’s financial disclosure. This can not only place you in jeopardy of criminal penalties and risk you being sued by your partner in the Civil Courts, but it could result

in you having to pay for an independent lawyer to review the documents on your partner’s behalf. At the very least your solicitor would have to send the documents to your partner’s solicitor and may have to cease acting for you. Therefore you must only deal with the exchanging of financial disclosure yourself if you are both agreeable to this. There will be some documentation which only one of you would need to obtain, for example valuations for the family home, a redemption figure for any mortgage and bank statements for any joint accounts. There will also be some items of documentation which you will each need to obtain. For example, you will need to exchange copies of your most recent P60 (or tax return if you are self-employed), your last three months’ payslips, bank statements covering the last 12 months for any accounts in which you have an interest, up to date valuations for any savings and investments, and cash equivalent transfer values (CETVs) for any private pensions. This list is not exhaustive and not all of these documents will be relevant to either, or both, of you. However whilst every case is different, the above documents are likely to form the majority of financial disclosure in most cases. Even in the most amicable case you will not be able to both see the same solicitor and it is therefore important that if you do exchange financial disclosure that you and your partner each have copies of both sets. For more advice please contact a specialist Family Lawyer at Hegarty Solicitors on 01780 752066 or email chris.brown@hegarty.co.uk

How to Straighten a Crooked Image

We’ve all done it - returned from holidays or a trip out and found that one or two of our best snaps are not straight. Whether this was caused by the excitement of the vista or the bottle of Greek ouzo you had at lunch, we can only guess! Fear not though - straightening these crooked images is pretty straightforward. Many photo editing software packages have an inclusive tool that allows the straightening of an image and they all work in a similar manner. I will utilise the tool included with Picasa in this article, as it is free for anyone to download (http:// picasa.google.com) and fairly straightforward to use. • Find the ‘crooked photo’ in your Picasa/Photo library • Double Click on it to open it up for editing (in the example shown, we will use the rainbow image which is clearly not straight in the original) The Picasa Editing Tool screen will open. • Click on Straighten You will now see the image in a single window with a grid overlaid to help you straighten it. • Left Click on the slider on the bottom • Drag it left or right to rotate the image clockwise or anti-clockwise. Tip: when editing, locate a straight line that is either the horizontal you require or the vertical. You can use this as the guideline. In the sample photo I’ve used the edge of the fields as the straight line. • When you are happy that the image has been straightened, click on Apply

And Voila! You have a straightened image (and very professional looking too).

Oh, and don’t forget to save it! Info: image taken by my Father-In-Law during a storm near Aylsham in Norfolk, Autumn 2014 IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk

If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Discovering...

...The Post Office by Rex Needle

T

he Post Office in England dates back to the 17th century when the collection and delivery of mail was carried out by regular coaching services but it was generally a costly business. The introduction of the penny post by Rowland Hill in 1840 brought the postal service within the reach of everyone and therefore resulted in a tremendous increase in the volume of mail and by 1849, the number of letters carried had reached almost seven million. The first post office for Bourne was opened in Abbey Road in 1847 and within ten years there was a daily collection and delivery of letters. Horse-drawn carts were used to transport the mail between the post office and local railway stations and after the line arrived in the town in 1860, all of the village postal services were eventually linked to Bourne. In 1870, the post office was moved from the Abbey Road premises to make way for the building of the new Corn Exchange to the stonebuilt premises in the market place, now the town centre, on the left of what is now Lloyds Bank. The postmaster was John Pearce who ran the business with the help of his two daughters in conjunction with his music and stationery shop next door. By 1905, the postal service had become universally popular and extremely well used with

56

D I S C O V E R I N G

letters delivered morning and afternoon and post boxes around the town emptied three and sometimes four times a day and in 1915 the service was speeded up even further when the mail cart which carried letters between Bourne and Peterborough was replaced by a motor van. Business at Bourne continued to expand as the population increased and eighty years later, the premises had become so cramped and inconvenient for staff that a new Post Office, complete with sorting office at the rear, was opened in 1981, one of the most modern in South Lincolnshire. The site chosen was in West Street where three old cottages were demolished to make way for the development. The red brick Post Office has been in use ever since despite attempts to downgrade and even close it on several occasions, notably in 2003 when a proposal to relocate the business as a counter service at the back of a supermarket 50 yards down West Street towards the Market Place was abandoned after several months of protest and a spirited campaign by the public and local organisations.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Winter driving and Speeding in Bourne

I

have just returned from a ski holiday in Colorado where we travelled from Denver across to Steamboat Springs. Any Bourne residents with experience of that route through the mountains will be aware of the hazards affecting drivers in the winter. Although there are lower maximum speed limits on those roads (typically 45 – 65mph), the actual average speed is surprisingly high for the wintry driving conditions. Also, the distance between the vehicles is shorter (we typically advise a two second separation gap in the dry and four seconds in the wet here in the UK, but I noticed even when driving in a heavy snow storm, on ice, they typically drive with a one second separation gap). Having said that, the average vehicle over there is better equipped to deal with those conditions; it will be larger, heavier, fitted with snow tyres, have traction control features – some even have their own snow plough fitted to the front! Another important difference is that due to the average size of the roads being that much wider, there are typically more “escape routes” available, should an emergency situation develop. Contrast a two way road with four lanes in each direction with something like our Spalding Road, which is one lane in each direction with dykes both sides of the road, and you see just how much more hazardous our roads are.

Moving on….I asked for your views on “Speeding in Bourne” in my article last month and you delivered! Thank you to all of you who took the time to email me (info@BIGTOM.

58 D I S C O V E R I N G

org.uk). I received e-mails from concerned residents, commuters, cyclists, dog walkers, and runners! The hotspots for speeding in Bourne appear to be Spalding Road, (leading to Cherry Holt Road), Willoughby Road, North Road, the A15 stretch near Elsea Park and West Road. A couple of themes emerged from your responses. Local drivers are feeling intimidated by vehicles “tailgating” much too close behind when they are complying with the 30mph speed restriction. The issue of drivers not giving way to pedestrians on zebra crossings is not isolated to North Road. Feedback from local residents suggests it is a common problem affecting West Road and near Sainsburys too. And lastly, there is an established Facebook page called “Bourne’s Bungle Drivers” with no fewer than 458 members who post images of offending vehicles that have been parked up illegally or inconsiderately. There appear to be a great deal of Bourne locals who are very unhappy with the lack of enforcement in Bourne for drivers who are committing driving offences – remember that these will most certainly include drivers who do not even live in our town. There seems to be a perception that drivers are either unaware of the legal requirements re speed signs, giving way at pedestrian crossings, careless/dangerous driving, causing an obstruction when parking or alternatively, the lack of enforcement means that there is so little chance of any consequence to these actions, that most drivers are prepared to take the chance. One response I received from a disgruntled couple residing in North Road mirrors my own experience. They felt so strongly about the danger of speeding on North Road they contacted Bourne Council and met with a similar response to my own last year i.e. no action taken at all. Despite this fact, my personal advice would be to keep letting our Town Council know, preferably by e-mail or letter, so that there is evidence of your complaint. Contact: Bourne Town Council 3 Abbey Road, Bourne PE10 9EF or email enquiries.bournetc@btconnect. com. Please let me know what response you receive from them (info@BIGTOM.org.uk).

PENNYLESS

Quality Musicians and Bourne Entertainers You may have seen this name on posters around Bourne, or maybe heard fiddle music drifting out from the Wild Heart Café, The Mason’s Arms or Smith’s Summer Beer Festival. Since 2010, Penny Stevens and Les Woods have been performing professionally under the name “Pennyless”, given to them by Andy Croft, manager of Stamford Arts Centre Cellar Bar. The duo quickly became a trio when they were joined by Graham Dale on stage at Stamford’s Summer Riverside Festival, and more recently, a four-piece, with the addition of Colin Benton. Pennyless play folk music with a twist of spice, on fiddle, guitar, flute, whistle, bouzouki, mandolin, bass, melodica and cajon, singing in three part harmony. The source of much of their music is traditional but wide-ranging; from medieval troubadour melodies to Celtic roofraisers, American roots and European dance tunes. Closest to the group’s heart, however is English folk music, which is woven into complex instrumental arrangements, threading through original songs, written by Penny and Les. Multi-instrumentalist, Graham Dale, composes tunes with his flair for rhythm and world music, whilst Colin adds melodies and driving force on bass guitar, with Les on guitar and Penny on fiddle. To date, Pennyless have released four albums, and performed widely throughout

the Midlands and the Eastern region in a huge variety of venues: from Cambridge Folk Club to Moira Furnace Folk Festival, from Crowland Abbey to the good ship Albatros in Wells- nextthe-Sea, “Rural Touring” in Northamptonshire village halls, in schools, clubs, festivals, churches, on beaches, in fields, and many other places - but no caves yet! In 2012, BBC film maker, Dylan Winter, came across Pennyless playing at Wells Pirate Festival and used their music as a soundtrack for his film, ‘Keep Turning Left’, about sailing around the British Isles. The following year, Penny and Les were approached by BBC television’s Countryfile programme to appear, playing and talking about the life, music and poetry of John Clare. Both events increased interest in the band, keeping them busy and very much in demand for live performances. If you want to catch Pennyless in full force, playing a wide selection of their material, they are appearing in concert on Saturday February 7th at St Michael and All Angels Church, Langtoft at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 from Richard Kelly on 01778 345423; bring your own drinks. Audio tracks can be heard and video clips seen, along with full gig listings, contact details and lots of photographs on www.pennyless-music.co.uk.

e z i ’ l | Community news a c o V Second Crop Music and Vocalize Second Crop and Vocal’ize came together in February 2014. Their music is from all periods, from the 60s right up to present day. Genres played by the group include: Motown, Pop, Reggae, Jazz and Rock. All the music is arranged and produced using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) files by Alan on the keyboards; with the vocal harmonies giving the group a unique sound. Their gigs since forming include performing at local public houses – all day to a packed audience at the back of the Black Bull Inn, Whittlesey, on Festival Day, Yaxley Beer Festival and various other local community events.

Background

Second Crop started as an idea in 2008/9 when Keith and Alan were talking about forming a vocal group. In the 1960s and 70s they were former members of a Whittlesey band called The Mayze which rehearsed and performed the occasional gig at The Ram in Whittlesey.

In the late 60s the band signed up with a big UK agency, which brought work all over the UK; including Rebecca’s Night Club in Birmingham where most of the household names you hear today started their musical careers. The band split-up in 1970 after supporting acts such as: Desmond Decker, Mac Arthur Park, Mungo Jerry, Eddie Flanogan and many others. In 2012 with Keith on vocals and Alan on keyboards/vocals Second Crop was formed. After trying to find a female vocalist in January 2014 Vocal’ize responded to their advertisement on a local web site for musicians. Vocal’ize started singing together in 2013. Made up of Lady Ska (Sharon), Cem’ize (Clare) and Ms T (Trudy) who all come from a variety of singing backgrounds including: Jazz, Reggae, Ska, Soul and Gospel. Between them they’d previously supported acts such as: Blazing Squad, Selector, Bad manners, Laurel Aitken – The God father of Ska.

Calling all Brides!

You are now engaged and have set the date … time to get planning! “Cupids Spring Wedding Shows” provide you with the ideal way of taking the hard work out of those hectic planning stages. Every bride dreams of that special wedding day, but to make that dream come true takes a lot of planning and organisation. Visiting a Wedding Show is the perfect way to ensure your wedding day is the most memorable and special occasion. Experts in the wedding industry will display their products and services, giving you an idea of their work and price ranges, which will assist you in establishing a budget for your special day. We all lead busy lives, and to have the opportunity to see your region’s greatest wedding suppliers all in one day, under one roof, is a huge benefit. It is also the perfect opportunity to get your partner involved in planning your big day, (they

66

D I S C O V E R I N G

will appreciate seeing everything in one day, rather than visiting a different shop, every weekend, for the next six months!) Whether you have just started planning your wedding, or you have just a few things left to organise, you will get so much more out of visiting a show; you will be able to smell the flowers, try on the jewellery, taste the cake, feel the fabric, hear your favourite music, see the latest skincare products and bridal hair creations and, most importantly, you can talk directly to the experts to discuss your unique, personal requirements.

The property market in 2014 was much improved on the previous year, with the team in Bourne winning ‘Most Improved Franchise of the Year’, competing against 27 other offices. Managing Director, Claire Soutar, reported that sales were up 56%, year on year. This was partly due to the team working very hard and providing excellent customer service, but also due to the market recovering, compared to 2013. Things are improving so much in Lincolnshire that co-owners, Claire and Chris, have decided to expand, and are soon to be opening a branch in Spalding in early 2015. With three new recruits currently being trained up in the Bourne and Grantham branches, it’s looking like a very exciting year for Newton Fallowell. Across the U.K, property prices are increasing, with some parts of the country increasing more quickly than others. In Lincolnshire, we have seen a steady increase, but nothing like that in the South East of England. The lettings market is also really very strong, with quality properties to rent being very hard to come by. Investors are still buying up two- and three-bedroomed properties to rent out in Bourne and other towns, as the returns on investments are still very good. There are plenty of good quality tenants looking for quality rentals, and things look likely to continue through 2015 with demand expected to be high. So if you are looking to move during 2015, please call the team at Newton Fallowell on 01778 422567.
