elcome to our March edition and a subtle reminder to our younger readers. Guess why our competition this month has a beautiful bouquet of flowers as the prize? Yes, it’s that time of year again when you can shower us Mums with all those lovely words, cuddles and flowers! (Sunday March 15th, as if you’d need any reminding!) Spring arrives later in the month of course - a time for freshening things up and putting new things in place for the longer and warmer days to come. The team have taken that to mean new regular features for Discovering Bourne. “Eating out Locally” kicks off with a visit to Corby Glen’s wonderful Woodhouse Arms, whilst our new vet in town’s column casts an eye over changes in the profession. Enjoy the warmer days ahead and thanks for the lovely feedback coming our way from you, the readers. Continuing, big thanks to all of our contributors and advertisers as well. Don’t Forget…. Clocks “Spring forward” one hour on Sunday March 29th. Soon be Summer!!!

As ever, your bulging “Discovering Bourne” magazine delights in bringing you the widest variety of useful information, advice and general issues concerning our town and some of its residents. Health, travel and financial issues jostle for space, alongside property and legal advice; regular features and new contributions abound, (Welcome to the town, Laytons Cleaners); Cathy Powell sits regally “In the Hot Seat”, whilst Bourne Cricket Club look forward to the season ahead … with more optimism than Captain Cook and the national crew! Finally, on a topical, potentially salacious, note… She told him she just had to see “Fifty Shades of Grey”, so he boldly took her by the hand, led her upstairs, opened the bedroom door and there, laid out on the bed, were….. the entire contents of his underpants drawer! Mother’s Day - March 15th
What’s That All About Then? First, a rather short poem... “Ta Ma!”
Perhaps not one of the most challenging, in terms of literary analysis, but I love the simplicity of it and the message which it conveys. On this day, we can just concentrate on being grateful for everything that Mum has gone through, from day one to getting us to where we are now. We need to just stop and think about the debt of gratitude we owe, and not just agonise over how much we need to spend to confirm our love for her. The origin of this day of celebration seems to be shrouded in mystery. The church festival of “Refreshment Sunday”, from the Middle Ages, had everyone re-visiting their “Mother Church” (where they had been baptised) on this day, the fourth Sunday in Lent. But long before then, the Ancient Greeks had chosen a day in spring to honour the mother of the gods, Rhea. Early Christians held a springtime festival in honour of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
However we decide to spend this wonderful day, it’s best to do it with a smile, just like these famous Mums might hopefully have done, having uttered the following famous words: a Humpty Dumpty’s Mother : “Humpty. If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times not to sit on that wall. But would you listen? Oh no!” a Michelangelo’s Mother : “Mike, why can’t you just paint on the walls like the other kids? Do you know how hard it is to get that stuff off that ceiling? a Napoleon’s Mother : “All right then, young man. If you’re not hiding your school report in your blazer, just take your hand out and prove it!”

Twenty-Five Years for
Waterside Waterside Garden Centre is proud to announce that 2015 marks its twenty-fifth birthday milestone. This family-run, independent business, located between Bourne and Market Deeping, and has continually grown ever since.
I
nitially, an old watercress bed was leased to start the business, east of the A15, but within a few years, the present site became available and Waterside Garden Centre officially opened for business on St Patrick’s Day March 17th.
Extensions to the two original garden centre buildings went ahead in late 1992 with a linking area and a massive conservatory frontage. Soon it was to be extended still further, adding offices, toilets and revamping the drainage system. “Now we have a business on a sound footing and all that heartache seems worthwhile.” In recent years, Waterside Garden Centre has

evolved into a diverse retail park and “destination point” in its own right. Various concessions have joined the team, including Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Pets Corner and Brantano, expanding the range of products available at Waterside. As well as these fantastic stores, there are many more shops and services available on the site. The 2000m² covered (all-weather) plant area hosts hundreds of different varieties of shrubs, trees and plants, suitable for many types of garden. Whether you’re planting summer bedding or a simple kitchen garden, Waterside’s knowledgeable plant experts are on hand, ready to answer your questions. Waterside Aquatics is home to hundreds of cold water, tropical and marine fish and plants. At the King Street Butchery, you’ll find a stunning range of locally-sourced cuts of meat, game and hand-made pies and sausages. “Country Clothing” stocks a fantastic range of high quality outdoor clothing, including Joules, North Face and Jack Wolfskin labels, along with equestrian products from top brands such as Toggi, Sherwood Forest and Puffa. The Home and Giftware department bursting with quality gifts, toys and games, whilst the Garden Furniture showroom could detain you for hours! After all that shopping, relax in the Oasis Restaurant. Children are catered for with animated movies and television shows, books and toys, while you catch up with friends and family. The Cookshop is our newest department and provides you with all the Kitchen & home essentials you need, big names including Denby, Brabantia, Vax, Morphy Richards, James Martin, Joesph Joesph and many more.

a “Expansion, Quality and Origin
In the intriguing and colourful world of body art, it is a sure sign of a top quality service if clients are prepared to travel long distances to get their tattoo…and then come back for more! Darryl Coley, the amiable owner of the “Illusions Tattoo and Piercing Studio” in West Street, Bourne, modestly lists several locations beyond London, from which contented customers make the journey to be with him. Several residents from Nottingham and Peterborough, besides many from Bourne itself, have all been to see him, and many just want more. The recent expansion and refurbishment of his studio, to incorporate the premises next door, is clear evidence of a business going places. Both Darryl and tattoo artist colleague, Jamie Blackbourn, are in no doubt that the present widespread interest in tattooing is not just a passing phase. So long as celebrities, including top footballers and television stars, continue to sport the fascinating range of images, symbols, names of their offspring and beautifully crafted pieces of artwork, then the general public will keep flocking 8

to “Illusions”. Neither is it just for the young and impressionable, although Darryl is delighted with the reaction of many parents recently. Having seen the quality of the work from the studio and the strict adherence to the highest standards of hygiene, they are more than happy to book- in their 18-year-olds for that special birthday present at “Illusions”. Age, of course, is no barrier, and it was no real surprise to hear of a 94-year-old recently paying “Illusions” a visit! The studio is a fully sterile environment, with single-use equipment for all tattoos and top quality inks. The team is constantly working with the health authority to maintain the necessary high standards expected of a top tattooing and piercing studio, (where only the top-of-the-range titanium jewellery is used for all piercings). A new, national, voluntary rating scheme, open to all tattoo studios, comes on-stream in April, and Darryl is sure that, by going ahead straightaway, his confidence about all aspects of the business will be vindicated with a top rating very soon. South Kesteven District Councillor, Frances Cartwright, endorses the recent move, when she said, “We’re delighted Illusions is moving to bigger premises and expanding their business. One of our key priorities is to grow the economy and we’re committed to helping businesses in any way we can. “In this case our environmental health team has been very happy to assist them ensuring all legislation and hygiene laws will be followed in their new premises.”

LAYTONS Dry Cleaners
Now in Bourne “You’d be Hard Pressed to Get a Cleaner Deal!”
Barnsdale
Eighty years ago, Mr. William Layton established his first dry-cleaning business in Whittlesey and expansion soon followed into March and Wisbech. Market Deeping and Spalding were then in line for the “Layton touch”, and the reputation for quality drycleaning became firmly established in South Lincolnshire. Now, in the capable hands of his grandson, Andrew, this family firm is here in Bourne, trading from their completely refurbished premises in the Angel Precinct, off North Street. Seeing the demise of the existing dry-cleaning business on this site enabled the ambitious and convivial Mr Layton to expand into Bourne, removing the need for his many long-standing customers to pad the A15 to his Deeping branch. Emphasis is placed on a quality service, the “old-fashioned, individual approach”, where respect is paid to the customer and their often, very expensive garments. Laytons are specialists in the careful treatment of wedding dresses, alongside the daily range of clothing, curtains, upholstery and work-wear. Add the fact that an express service is part of Laytons’ “modus operandi”, (at no extra cost!) then you have their recipe for success. Over seventy local agents service, twice weekly, an enormous patch of Eastern England for Laytons, (including Morton, Corby Glen and Folkingham), and, as you would expect, Laytons’ staff are fully trained in all aspects of the laundry industry.

| In the hot seat
Cathy Powell Proud Mother, Crown Jeweller, Liverpool Lass This month, (which, of course, sees us all celebrating Mother’s Day), the “Hot Seat” is occupied by a mother of two, the popular owner and Managing Director of Crown Jewellers, Cathy Powell. Proud of her very experienced team of jewellery professionals, (and with one son, Matt, on board as a resident goldsmith), Cathy provides her discerning clientele with a unique experience - a stunning array of the finest gemstones and exquisite diamonds, sourced from the world’s top gem-cutters and suppliers. Customers can discuss their jewellery requirements, and Crown Jewellers can design and hand make, to order. Cathy is a member of the Institute of Registered Valuers and has been in the jewellery industry for many years, gaining qualifications from the National Association of Goldsmiths. “I have a loving husband, Russ, who keeps me on the straight and narrow, backing me all the way,” Cathy adds. They have two sons. Matt, she describes as, “an engaging, talkative young man who just loves his job”, whilst Richard is “a dreamboat, tall dark and handsome, but sadly, (for Cathy), now living in Wales!” (Sounds like someone’s hoping for some Mother’s Day treats! - Ed.) Cathy’s interests are constantly striving to achieve the very best she can for her business, which, at times, can get quite stressful. To counteract this, she thoroughly enjoys a good circuit-training session with Richie and his regular squad!
1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?
I was born in Liverpool and, although a lot of my accent might have changed, I‘m still a proud “Scouser”. As an eight-year-old on holiday in Anglesey, my favourite memory was choosing Meg, our beautiful English springer spaniel puppy.
2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
My parents, John and Jeanette Myers, now retired and still living in Liverpool, continue to work hard, and it is they who have instilled in me a tremendous work ethic. During difficult times in the 1970s, when Dad had been made redundant, Mum worked seven days a week to keep us all warm, safe and fed. She worked three jobs at the same time, sometimes not getting home until the early hours. Dad also worked hard setting up a mobile fruit and vegetable van, again working so many hours to fit in around Mum.
3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? 12
D I S C O V E R I N G
It’s got to be Stephen Fry, with his spell-binding intellect, command of the English language and fabulous sense of humour. The other would be John Benjamin, the nice guy from the Antiques Roadshow. His depth of knowledge of jewellery is immense and he’s a compelling orator too.
4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS?
Professional, ambitious, happy, content and fun. (Apparently, my lovely staff said I shouldn’t be so honest, when I first suggested, “Total pain in the backside”!)
5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? There is nothing I would change, as such, but I would like to see more of a variety of shops in the town and a return of a more vibrant market, which, in turn, would have a great effect on community spirit.
6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?
“Don’t rush, take your time, you will get there in the end. Enjoy what you are doing today and tomorrow will be just fine.”

“Safe Local Trades” Volunteers Answer ‘DIY SOS’ for Resource Centre Garden Revamp VOLUNTEERS from “Safe Local Trades” in Peterborough joined forces in their own DIY SOS-style transformation project for the city’s newly opened Dementia Resource Centre. The facility, on Lincoln Road, opened its door last September, providing a hub for dementia support, (offering information, advice, activity groups and training for carers). But it was when the centre appealed for help in transforming a patch of wasteland into a community garden - where patients and groups can plant flowers and grow vegetables - that “Safe Local Trades” came to the rescue. Following an appeal to members by “Safe Local Trades” director, Eileen Le Voi, free materials and labour by generous volunteers have led to the revamping of the area to create a calming and relaxing space. Among those offering their help were Travis Perkins in Ivatt Way, Peterborough, who provided all the building materials free of charge. The design and transformation of the garden was thanks to “Safe Local Trades” landscape experts, members Oakfield UK and Style Home Improvements. “Safe Local Trades” director, Eileen Le Voi, who coordinated the project, said: “These generous members had no hesitation in offering their services, skills and time to this remarkable and very worthwhile project – I can’t thank them enough. “The end result looks wonderful, and we all hope that the patients and activity groups using the garden will get enormous pleasure from it.” Rob Henchy, interim commissioning manager, Adult Social Care, Peterborough City Council, said: “This act of kindness and generosity, reminiscent of the BBC’s “DIY SOS” programme, is thanks to individuals from Oakfield UK, for excavating the land, and from Style Home Improvements, for laying the paving slabs, and of course to Travis Perkins, for donating the materials for the ground works. “A huge thank you from everyone at the Dementia Resource Centre to you all and especially to Eileen Le Voi from “Safe Local Trades”, Peterborough, for making this happen.” As the Dementia Resource Centre was so grateful, a plaque was erected on the wall, thanking “Safe Local Trades” and their members for donating their time and labour in making it all possible. The centre is run by the Alzheimer’s Society and funded by Peterborough City Council.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much
a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Russia
Russia remains un-ticked on many people’s wish-list – mainly due to the perception of cost, complexity and the added inconvenience of obtaining a tourist visa. I can arrange holidays which include the visa for Russia and seamlessly handle each application on your behalf, with a fast-track service available for short-notice breaks. Russia also need not be extravagant – especially if you travel out of high season. October, surprisingly, falls within low season (which extends to the end of March), when hotel rates fall and there is great potential for “free night offers”, but the weather can still be pleasant. Furthermore, museum queues are far shorter and there are less of them. In St. Petersburg, you can visit its many jewel-box palaces and galleries, all beautifully showcased against a back-drop of cloudless, blue skies. The mind-boggling Church on the Spilled Blood and the impressively opulent Peterhof Palace, with its sprawling gardens, are two of my three highlights. The third would be the recently opened new stage at the Mariinsky Theatre, to see a ballet performance of “Cinderella”. My top tip is to book a table for a pre-performance dinner at Sadko, an authentic Russian restaurant just a few minutes’ walk away, and enjoy a hearty stroganov, whilst listening to live folk music. I can secure muchsought-after tickets for the best seats at the Mariinsky, before you travel, and would be glad to make a restaurant recommendation and book a table for dinner. Hotel Astoria is perfectly positioned within the “Golden Triangle” area of the city, within which are many of the essential sights, including

Easier and More Beautiful Than Ever St. Isaac’s Cathedral. I highly recommend a Superior Deluxe room with a view of St. Isaac’s Cathedral Square. After the excitement of St Petersburg, jump on the high-speed Sapsan train to Moscow. In less than four hours, and similar to the Continental Eurostar trains, the First Class service provides added space and comfort and a meal with wine, served at your seat. Contrary to many preconceptions, Moscow is a most attractive city and far less ‘corporate’ than most people anticipate. For a short stay, I would recommend the Ararat Park Hyatt – in the very heart of the historic centre. For a truly spectacular view of the city, take the elevator up to the Conservatory Bar and Lounge on the tenth floor for breath-taking panoramic views of the Kremlin, Red Square and the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre. Moscow and St Petersburg certainly provide a wonderfully contrasting two-centre holiday.

Spring into Action!!! “Inactivity Kills More Than Obesity” is a headline which recently caught my eye. Maybe just more scare-mongering, you might think, but there’s plenty we can be doing to help ourselves, as the days get warmer and the evenings stay lighter for longer. Why not “Spring into Action”?
A
lack of exercise could be killing twice as many people as obesity in Europe, a twelve year study by University of Cambridge researchers suggests. They concluded that getting everyone to do at least 20 minutes of brisk walking a day would have substantial benefits, as exercise is beneficial for people of any weight. Obesity and inactivity often go hand in hand. However, it is known that thin people have a higher risk of health problems if they are inactive. And obese people who exercise are in better health than those that do not. The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, attempted to tease out the relative dangers of inactivity and obesity. They assessed exercise levels and waistlines and recorded every death. "The greatest risk [of an early death] was in those classed inactive, and that was consistent in normal weight, overweight and obese people," commented one of the researchers, Prof Ulf Ekelund. June Davison, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “The results of this study are a clear reminder that being regularly physically active can reduce the risk of dying from coronary heart disease. “The research suggests that just a modest increase in physical activity can have health benefits. Adults should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, carrying it out in sessions of 10 minutes or more. Keeping active every day will help reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease.” 26

So, what can we do about it, besides just digging out the bike from the garage, buying a new pair of trainers or running up the stairs, instead of taking the lift? Bourne has a range of facilities and groups, (besides the Leisure Centre and fitness clubs) which could help you on your way, for example: n “Walking for Health”- a Saturday walking group, details available at www.southkesteven. co.uk n Classes at Elsea Park Community Centre include yoga, zumba, “Rise and Shine”(dance for the more mature, Thursdays from 9.30 -10.30a.m.) n U3A - walking, table tennis, ten pin bowling, pilates , contact details on their website at www. u3abourne.org.uk And, of course, right on our doorstep, the beautiful Bourne Woods provide the perfect backdrop for your “Springing into Action”, be it on a mountain bike, actually getting some wear out of those Christmas trainers or just walking the dogs and/or the children! New Year’s Resolutions – How are you getting on?
Many of us made New Years Resolutions and some will have included eating healthily and exercising regularly. As we approach the Spring, are these resolutions a distant memory or are you needing a boost to help keep you going? Launching into an exercise programme without careful consideration after a period of inactivity and over-indulgence, may have resulted in the development of aches and pains owing to the shock inflicted on the body in such a short space of time. The desire to shake off those extra pounds often causes us to rush to the gym, join every class possible and work ourselves to exhaustion when our bodies least expect it, let alone able to cope. The result can often lead to injuries as our muscles and joints are put under great stresses. If you are experiencing aches and pains, don’t ignore them. This is your body’s way of telling you to slowdown. Therefore, you need need to recover properly after exercise and include a thorough cool-down and stretching session after each workout. Alternatively, your fitness campaign may have started well, provided encouraging results helping you to feel rejuvenated, fitter and healthier. However, perhaps you have noticed your performance has peaked and you are now seeking that little bit more to satisfy your competitive edge? Either way, have you considered a Sports Massage? Sports Massage is equally important when it comes to aiding muscle recovery,

treating injuries and improving performance. Through using various soft tissue stretching techniques, massage can reduce scar tissue, Rebecca Brett BTEC, thereby improving the Dip ST, Remedial efficiency of the muscle, sports massage improve joint range of therapist movement by helping to improve stride length, both resulting in less effort required to cover a greater distance. When used as part of your fitness routine, Sports Massage can play a pivotal role in preventing injury, aiding muscle recovery post exercise, improving performance and helping to save what may otherwise have been a difficult and painful experience in keeping that New Year’s resolution.
Other benefits of Sports Massage include: l Promote relaxation l Improve postural complaints l Ease pain l Assess injuries l Complement rehabilitation of injuries So, for anyone looking to get the best out of their New Year campaign to improve their well-being, regular Sports Massage should be considered regardless of sporting ability. I recommend a Sports Massage session every 3-4 weeks depending on frequency of training. It’s time to consider your options: Continue on what could be a difficult and painful fitness campaign or prevent injury and improve future performance?

Bourne family firm puts best foot forward A Bourne family shoe firm has scooped its third national award. North Shoes, who are based in North Street, Bourne, and also have stores in Stamford and Peterborough, claimed the “Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year” accolade at the 2015 Footwear Industry Awards, held recently in Solihull. James North, the fifth generation at the head of the family firm, said, “It’s amazing that a small retailer like us can win a national award - beating off national independent retailers who have a shop in every large city in the country! I’m extremely grateful to all the staff at North Shoes’ three shops for their continued quality service to our customers, and it’s great that, when an independent retailer is passionate about a brand (in our case, Loake), it gets recognised.” The awards presentation was witnessed by an audience of between 400 and 500, and James 30

Would you like your Whilst having babies can be the most meaningful and enlightening part of a woman’s life, for many mums it signals the end of a youthful figure. By Claire Saunders It takes 9 months to gain all the weight and produce your little bundle of joy, so it would make sense that you should allow yourself the same amount of time to return to normal. But if you are still “blaming” childbirth five, ten, fifteen (or more) years later do you think that maybe, it could be a little bit of an excuse, or there could be another reason?
pre-baby figure back?
Our ambition isn’t to change you, or turn you into some sort of athlete. We like you to be yourself, only better! That is why we have designed a programme that is run by women who understand the demands of a busy life, who can show you a realistic, enjoyable way to get your figure back.
Of course, there are always the exceptions to the rules, women who seem to have babies and spring back into their jeans before their children can eat solid foods. No stretch marks, flat tummies and pert bosoms or bottoms can be a sign of a fortunate few, its life I’m afraid. The rest of us mere mortals need to take action! Before you start to groan and turn the page, it’s not all about diet and exercise. If you have watched your children grow up whilst looking at a reflection in the mirror that you are unhappy with, I suspect that you have also tried several diets and numerous sorts of exercise. You haven’t got the result that you want; because you haven’t found something that you can stick to.

The Future of hearing solutions is now Understanding speech in the most challenging listening situations is ultimately what people with hearing loss want. Whether in a conversation, on the telephone, or perhaps watching television, overcoming these difficult scenarios has proven to be a real challenge - that is, until now...
Hearing aids have consistently managed to decrease in size while increasing in performance and durability. In general, they are becoming hardly noticeable and to the wearer, this discretion and dramatically improved performance is obvious and appreciated. Creating a product that can adapt to a wearer’s specific surroundings sounds like a futuristic idea yet to be invented, when in reality the technology is already available. This new generation of hearing aids is taking listening solutions to the next level due to its unparalleled capability of accurately analyzing listening environments in real-time, while automatically adapting and optimizing. Hearing care professionals can also personalize specific settings to match a wearer’s specific needs, making hearing a pleasure.
Selective attention
Regardless of the situation, new and enhanced technology delivers a quality of sound second to none. The versatility of this new technology is made possible due to the development of a new chip featuring complex algorithms which in turn allows the wearer to focus on particular sounds in different scenarios. From a restaurant, where the noise can cause difficulty understanding speech, to a concert where music is at the forefront, this state-of-the-art technology is capable of detecting the presence of different frequencies and reverberations and adapting accordingly.
Tailor-made excellence
Choosing the right hearing aid has never been easier. As with people, styles and preferences vary according to different lifestyles. Available in an array of colours – tailor-made listening excellence has arrived in the form of the new Phonak Audéo V hearing aid. Swiss based leader in hearing solutions, Phonak, has listened intently to the needs of people with hearing loss and to the invaluable feedback from hearing care professionals around the world. Back Spasm Treatment Proven and Effective Self-Treatment for Back Pain Muscle Spasms
Back spasms, muscle contractions, injury to, or irritation of, the muscles, ligaments and nerves of the back can cause severe pain and muscle spasm. If you have this muscle condition, you will usually feel severe muscle tightening and pain. A palpable knot or tension of the muscles is also felt on the back.
Self treatment for back spasm Here’s a list of some effective self-care that you can do at home, all proven techniques that have provided relief to most of my patients, resulting in fewer therapy visits: 1. Stop your activity. At the first sign of a muscle spasm, stop your activity, even if the symptom is minimal. You can try massaging or rubbing the affected muscles. 2. Cold application Swelling and increased blood flow can produce increased pain after an injury. By applying cold initially, (ice wrapped in a towel or a pack of frozen peas), this will help minimize these reactions. It is usually effective after the first occurrence of a spasm, but you can continue with cold application, if heat does not provide relief. Apply an ice pack to the painful area for about 12-15 minutes, repeating every two hours, for the first day or two. 3. Heat application. Moist heat is ideal as it helps to relax tensed muscles. Application of heat, (with a hot water bottle or a moist, hot towel) should be done after cold application. Apply moist heat to the painful area for about 15 minutes, repeating every four hours until the spasm subsides. Warning: I have patients who have reported an increase in their symptoms when heat was applied. If this is the case, discontinue
Jo Sunner. Osteopath, Pulse Practice, Bourne. Also at Fitzwilliam Hospital, Peterborough
immediately, and continue with cold application. 4. Rest. Resting for two or three days is important, as this will help a muscle injury to heal faster. However, it is necessary to maintain some mobility during this time. Try slow gentle walking for a couple of minutes, several times a day, if pain allows. Avoid twisting and bending of the trunk—this may increase the spasm. 5. Elevate your legs. It’s not easy to find a comfortable position. Try just elevating your legs on pillows or supporting your feet or lower legs on a foot stool while sitting. 6. Pain medications. If these self-care techniques don’t help, talk to your pharmacist about taking over-the-counter, non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) to help back spasms, such as Ibuprofen. Exercises that help relieve back spasm. I have prepared a simple and very useful exercise sheet which is available, free of charge, here at Pulse Practice in Bourne (next to the post office on West Street). Please call 01778 426000 for a copy.

The Woodhouse Arms
at Corby Glen
Alongside the main road in Corby Glen, west of Bourne, stands the prominent stone and pan-tiled Woodhouse Arms. Stopping off, and seeing for yourself just what a quality recent refurbishment should look like, is something I would strongly recommend for this country inn.
A
t every turn, upon entering the building, there is a feeling of warmth and tasteful choices having been made. Log-burning stoves and a roaring, open fireplace in the bar area ensure that the crucial first impression is favourable. The sumptuous carpet and furnishings in the main dining area, with mis-matched dining chairs, are a delight. They’ve not over-dressed the place and the bare flagstones in the bar and wooden carpet-free floors, here and there, show that discerning choices can be made to good effect. “Eat, Sleep & Drink” recommend the signs outside and, having taken up the suggestion to do just that, my party were impressed, from the first warm, welcoming smiles from all the staff, to leaving with clear intentions to return very soon. The meals were all carefully presented, delicious in every detail and remarkably good value. The Timothy Taylor’s “Landlord” beer got the nod, whilst the wide range of wines actually included many more than just a couple below the £20 mark. The “Sleep” element would involve the three spacious, and again, well-appointed, bedrooms with their queen-size beds and complimentary “breakfast-to-go” at £70 per night. The “Full English” would cost £10 per person, but would still make the stop-over, after an evening function, for example, a very attractive proposition in all respects. The two large dining areas can accommodate birthday parties, celebrations and luncheon clubs. A “Birthday Special” offer, whereby the Birthday Guest in a party of at least four, will be eligible for the meal, “On the (Wood) house”, has proven
40

to be very popular, whilst the “Mothering Sunday Special” was fully booked within days. Why not take a punt on “The Grand National Woodhouse Luncheon” on Saturday April 11th? (Full details are available in-house). The Woodhouse Arms ticks many boxes, from “warm welcome”, through “family friendly” and “charming staff” to “delicious food”, “good local” and “somewhere special”.

It’s been a very eventful start to the New Year for the Bourne Business Chamber. January saw the launch of a new website, alongside the monthly meeting of members, and a special talk from the Bank of England. Retaining many elements of the original web-site, the biggest change to the new site was to provide all local member businesses with a page where they can feature their business for the benefit of local residents and other Bourne businesses. Here, you will now find some details about the various local businesses and the occasional special offer. The site can be found at http://www.bournebusiness.co.uk At the monthly member meeting, in Wake House, a most informative and fascinating talk from Tracy Longmuir about the trials and tribulations of building and re-branding her pet care businesses was enjoyed by all. This same get-together included Claire Saberton, the publisher of Discovering Bourne, speaking about the very impressive growth in the magazine and future plans for both the magazine and the town. During January, the BBC also welcomed the Bank of England to Wake House, where they shared some of their in-depth financial knowledge. Unfortunately, that was all they were allowed to bring along with them! The February meeting will have passed by the time you read this, so the next meeting will be on March 17th, at 6pm at Wake House, where the speakers will be Paul Ross, talking about new pension Do youwith need help with legislation, and Wayne Lound, giving his overview of changes at Jobneed Centre Plus. .... But What About ISAs??? With all the headline news regarding pension reforms over the past few months, ISAs seem to have got a little lost - the Chancellor made some important changes to ISA rules at the same time. I will summarise these changes below. The basics are that, within an ISA, you pay no capital gains tax and no further tax on income (although there is a small amount of tax levied on dividends at source). You don’t need to declare ISAs on your tax return, and less tax means higher returns for you. The value of these benefits will depend on your own circumstances and tax rules can change over time. One of the key strengths of ISAs is their simplicity; any UK resident aged 18 or over (16 for Cash ISAs) can invest. There is no upper age limit and you can withdraw your savings without paying any tax whenever you need. You can even invest up to £4,000 per year into a Junior ISA for under-18s which attracts the same tax treatment and passes to their own ownership at age 16, but locks the money away until they are aged 18. From April 2015, you will also be able to transfer existing Child Trust funds into Junior ISAs. A survey from YouGov suggests that 77% of British adults - or 38 million people - have little or no understanding of the new ISA rules which came into effect in July 2014. There are a few key changes including further improvements announced in December’s Autumn Statement: u An Increased ISA annual allowance of £15,000, rising to £15,240 in April. u You can now split your annual allowance as you wish between a Cash ISA and Stocks & Shares ISA, as long as you stay within the overall £15,000 limit. You can only contribute to one ISA of each type in each tax year. u Changes proposed in the Autumn Statement mean that investors will be able to
pass on their accumulated ISA allowance to their spouse or civil partner on death. u You can now transfer from a Stocks & Shares ISA to a Cash ISA, and vice versa. Previously, you could only transfer from a Cash ISA to a Stocks & Shares ISA. u ISA investors can now invest in individual corporate bonds and gilts with less than five years to maturity. u Under the new rules, interest paid on cash held in a Stocks & Shares ISA is tax-free. Previously, it was paid net of basic rate tax. Used every year, the ISA allowance allows savers and investors to build a substantial tax-efficient portfolio. If you invested the full ISA allowance every year since launch in 1999 (replacing PEPs and TESSAs), you could have sheltered as much as £139,080 from tax, which excludes investment growth. It is crucial that you review your ISAs regularly, since Cash ISAs may well be in old accounts which have minimal interest rates. Even current offerings are not particularly attractive and it is difficult to find a cash ISA which returns more than the rate of inflation. Equity ISAs were often sold by banks and building societies which have a restricted number of investment options available to them. The new rules on Pensions and ISAs mean that no longer should we look at individual policies or investments in isolation, especially as you approach your 50s when pension flexibility really makes itself felt. Always take INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE. A good Independent adviser will review your whole situation and make recommendations that take your own personal, as well as financial, position into account.

How to build your
Reputation by Paula Finch
Whatever you do in life, your reputation - and, by that, I mean how you are perceived and thought of by others - influences how people perceive you. Anyone who runs a business will know the importance of building your brand and reputation; it’s often the reason your business, product or service is recommended, and your details are passed on by word of mouth. The same is true for individuals. If you are applying for a job, or a place at school, college or university, it helps to have a clear identity and “personal brand” values that stand up to the test. Offering examples of past experiences, or ideas of how you’d approach something in the future, will help you to prove that you are, and can do what you say you can do. So, if you want to be the ‘go-to’ person for the things you want to be known for, now’s the time to take control and become your own public relations manager. Here’s how… 1. Decide what you want to be known for. Keep it simple. How do you want others to think of you? Are you an expert? Are you trustworthy? What do you represent? What do you stand for? Focus on the things that are going to bring you the biggest reward. 2. Keep a record of proof. What achievements, events or actions do you have that reinforce your brand and build your reputation? Write them down. Share them

about funding for business growth 44
judiciously – but do share them. . 3. Be consistent – live the brand. It’s hard to build a reputation but easy to lose it. The most successful brands are those that are trusted, so be mindful and behave in a way that’s consistent with your brand values. 4. Build a network of supporters. Find and nurture relationships with people who value and appreciate you enough to recommend you to others. Give something back and always say thank you to those who support you. ‘A bit of damp – is it a concern?’ Advice by Paul Gowers from Gowers Surveyors A lot of older buildings have the odd damp patch and, quite often, it’s something that has been lived with for years, but damp in our houses is something most of us, quite rightly, feel a bit concerned about. Damp houses can cause health issues and can cause further problems for the house itself, if allowed to continue. ‘Damp’ can appear all over the property. It is often easy to diagnose that a house has damp, but it is more difficult to work out the cause, and harder still to properly assess the right remedy. ‘Rising damp’ has had a lot of press and causes the most concern, but is almost always not the correct diagnosis. I’ve seen thousands of older properties with retrofit injected dampproof courses which didn’t need them and which weren’t addressing the real issue. Lowering external ground levels, fixing leaking gutters and pipes and improving ventilation is quite often all that is needed to solve the problem. Most of the damp in most houses is caused by condensation. While rising damp causes a lot more concern than it should, condensation is usually dismissed. It can however create a lot of issues for the house and its occupants. Older houses, in particular, need to be able to ‘breathe’. The best advice, if you see some damp and you are concerned about it, is to have it checked by an independent expert. Don’t ask a dampproofing company … their job is to sell you a damp-proof course and that is usually not what you need! Speak to a property expert who is experienced in how old buildings in particular work. Too many older houses have had ‘improvements’ which have trapped the moisture and caused condensation issues, and a proper investigation can save you money and save you carrying out supposed repairs that can often do more harm than good. I would be happy to give free, over the phone, advice and talk through any concerns you may have.

Eight Tips for Safer Home Computing 1. Ensure that you use an Internet Security solution. At one time, the free anti-virus products were sufficient for protecting the average home computer user, but these days, viruses account for less than 50% of security threats to your system. Obviously, using a free anti-virus solution is better than nothing, but for better protection, use a full Internet Security Suite such as Norton or Kaspersky. 2. Check the URL (web address) of any search results before clicking on a link. Ensure that you only visit known valid sites or sites connected to the product or service for which you are searching. For example, if you are searching for the product Malware Bytes, then you may see this search result in Google:
Look at the address shown in green. This is where the target of that search is located. In this case it is a valid site. If it shows something that you are unfamiliar with, or a strange URL, then don’t go to it. Find an alternative, or check out the validity of the URL. 3. Use Internet Site Advisor tools. Related to the above, there are a number of tools that check the validity of a URL in a search result and indicate if a site is safe. If you have a full Internet Security Suite, then it should include one of these. If not, McAfee offer a free one. Safe sites are indicated with a green tick, yellow tick etc. (see image)
4. Do NOT use duplicate passwords. Not a very popular suggestion this one, but the use of duplicate passwords for different sites is IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk

a major cause of accounts being hacked. If you need to, then write them down – if you do, then use a code so what you’ve written won’t mean anything to anyone else. There are also tools that will keep a secure encrypted list of your password, but obviously you need PC/Tablet access to use these. 5. Never open attachments in unexpected e-mails. Even if they appear to be from a friend or family member. Check with the person first, before opening the attachment using a NEW e-mail thread (don’t forward on the attachment). 6. Be vigilant in what you say or click on in chat rooms or on social media. I am amazed at what people impart about themselves on social media. Do not put ANYTHING on there that you don’t want the world to see. You may think only your friends are reading it, but if they share it with their friends, who then share it with their friends etc, it can quickly get out of control. 7. Regularly check your browser for add-ons. One of the most common problems that I see in the field is where users have had their browser hacked by a company or an individual, redirecting their searches or causing pop-ups. All browsers have the in-built capability to be reset to remove this type of add-on. Look online to learn how to reset your browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari etc.) and check it frequently. 8. Do not allow cold-caller access to your system. There are a number of scams running, where you will receive a telephone call informing you that there is a problem on your computer. THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE COMPANY DOING THIS. If you receive such a call, then hang up. Likewise, if you see a pop-up on your PC offering the same, it is likely to be a scam. Ignore it, unless you can validate its authenticity.

The Girl in the Shadows A Short Story by Emma Shrapel, (A Year 11 Student at Bourne Academy) Part 1 (of 3)
There once was a girl who I used to know. She never laughed or played, but instead, she stood in the shadows. Under trees or in the shelter of small barns, she would be there; just waiting and watching. Her dark brown hair would shield her face, her complexion forever a mystery. Her piercing purple eyes would be hidden from view, concealing her secret that no one could ever know. The town’s people knew of the strange girl in the blue cloak, but she was almost a figure of their imagination. No one had ever seen her out of the protection of the shadows and even then, she was only a faint movement. In a blink of an eye she would be gone. The town’s people speculated, but only a few came close to knowing the answer to the girl’s strange behaviour. The girl in the shadows was cursed. After changing the balance of nature, the spirits punished her with a curse. In exchange for the return of her brother’s life, she would become a member of the living dead; forever hiding what her curse could do until the answer came of how to break the spell. Her only freedom came in the form of the night, when everywhere was deserted and it was too dark to see her true appearance. Night after night, she aimlessly wandered the town’s streets, waiting and hoping that she would soon know the answer to her freedom. Then, one night in the middle of August, a ferocious storm broke out across the dark skies. Blinding flashes of lightning powered through the still night. The heavens opened, soaking the land in a riptide flood. Crops were destroyed and many houses were damaged beyond repair. In the days that followed, the town’s people started to speculate as to what could have caused the devastating storm and soon all fingers were pointing to witchcraft; more importantly, to the girl in the shadows.

| Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley
“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings” This month, I am moving away slightly from the usual style to discuss with you the significant changes that the police, both nationally and locally, are currently facing.
The police nationally are seeing huge cuts to funding, resulting in 17,000 fewer officers to date. The difficulty is how can the police maintain public confidence, when cuts will inevitably have an impact on the service provided? Throughout all of this, the Government has stated that crime is falling. The Home Secretary, Theresa May, has said that the police will only, “Deal with crime, nothing more, nothing less”. Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary has said that the demands on the police are falling! I often wonder what people think the police do, so here is a snapshot of a typical day in January in the Bourne area of one of my team.
07:00 – On duty for morning briefing. A quick check of my e-mails, appointments and open incidents that need action. 07:20 – Road Traffic Collision. A vehicle has gone into a ditch on an icy road. I deal with recovery of the vehicle and transport the driver to her destination. 09:30 – Grantham Custody, to deal with three people due to answer bail for a shop theft that occurred in Bourne in December.
All three fail to answer bail.
11:10 – Deal with a dispute between two parties over the contents of a skip!
11:45 – Back at Bourne Station to deal with
some incidents by phone, including the recovery of a stolen horsebox, and enquiries for an absconded asylum seeker. I take the opportunity to grab a sandwich at my desk while I work. 12:50 – Assist in conveying an elderly male and his vehicle home after he was seen driving erratically. He’s not safe to drive, so he’ll be reported to DVLA for his licence to be reviewed. 13:30 – Spot a car I’ve been looking for in Bourne. The driver has no licence, insurance or MOT. The car is seized and the driver is reported for several offences. I’ll do the paperwork later. 14:40 – Visit a nursery in Bourne, after concerns are raised about the welfare at home of a child in their care. This involves making a referral to Social Services. 15:15 – Attend a sudden death. Deal with a grief-stricken family at a traumatic time. Stay with them, while arranging for undertakers to attend. 16:45 – Back to Bourne Police Station to update all my incidents. It’s been a busy day and this takes me until 6pm, an hour after I should have finished. Of all of these, only the suspects answering bail and the telephone enquiries regarding a stolen horsebox are “crime related”. The remainder are still a necessary demand on the police and this demand is certainly not falling, as confirmed by the College of Policing. To finish off, I want to stress that Lincolnshire Police still actively work with communities and partner agencies to ensure that we offer the best possible service. Trust and confidence are important, and, as such, my team and I are committed to deal positively with all reported incidents. To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. | Spotlight on clubs
The All-Conquering Bourne Cricket Club
This is the time of year when cricketers, young and old, start to get excited about the summer ahead, and clubs prepare in earnest for the start of the season, in early April. This year will be another “Ashes Summer, where the visit of our biggest adversaries, the Aussies, always creates more interest than usual. However, the visit of an inspired New Zealand, under the captaincy of Brendon McCullum, will be an interesting and challenging prelude to the main event. At the local level, Bourne will be aiming to build on their all-round successes of 2014 when, at senior level, they won the Lincolnshire Premier League, the Jaidka Cup and the Stamford Knockout Cup, as well as having a successful season in both the South Lincs & Border League and the Rutland League. At junior level, the Under 13s won their league in the Border Counties, and good cricket was played at all age groups, from the Under 9s upwards. As part of the positive development plan at the club, a Sunday 3rd XI has now been entered in
the Rutland League, to give young cricketers, from the age of thirteen, a chance to play with more experienced adults in a longer game. New players, young and old, are always welcome at the club and, if you want to be involved, please contact Hedley Stroud by e-mail (hedley.stroud@ btinternet.com) in the first instance. Similarly, if you would like to join us for some indoor coaching and practice during March, please contact us. The Abbey Lawn is an exciting place to be at the week-ends, when there is a full programme of league matches to watch and enjoy. The Club is very grateful to a small, but growing, group of loyal supporters who come and watch, relax and use the comfortable facilities the club has to offer when matches are being played on this, one of the finest grounds in the area. An essential part of the club is the financial support it receives from local businesses, charities and its Vice Presidents. This helps to make it a real community club and one of the objectives for 2015 is to try and build upon this even further.
For more information about Bourne Cricket Club, please contact Hedley Stroud by e-mail (hedley.stroud@btinternet.com) 58

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram
Road Safety on Elsea Park A recent visit to the new homes over in Oak Spring Gardens, Elsea Park, highlighted a trend in new build developments. When we raised the issue with the showhouse representative that the five bedroomed, detached house only has a single garage with one parking space, his response was to laugh, “Everyone wants more parking space!” This is with apparent disregard of the fact that there have long been more households with two or more vehicles than there are with none [source:National Travel Survey: England 2013].
“But what we have done in this phase of the build is to widen the roads more than the previous phases”, he continued. We looked up the road and saw that the fronts of the houses were literally a footpath from the edge of the road. The BBC did recently highlight the environmental impacts of residential areas with few front gardens, as people convert grass to concrete for additional parking. But there will be no such conversions here, as there was very little grass at the front of the houses in the first place! At the time we viewed the house, three
young children were darting across the road, sometimes on foot, sometimes on bikes. As technology is enabling quieter vehicles, one has to wonder whether this combination of children playing on roads with almost silent vehicles nearby is ultimately a good thing. We shouldn’t underestimate the consequences of restricted parking space. Hazard perception is reduced due to the lack of vision for drivers, by having one or both sides of a road with parked vehicles on it. Large emergency vehicles may struggle to get through some of the small gaps in the road that are already evident, for instance at “The Pollards”. Having vehicles parked half on the footpath and half on the road can inconvenience many people. Tensions can rise between residents when parking affects others. But very tight bends in the road, sometimes with hedges or parked vehicles restricting the vision, is not a good combination. If you also add the factor that it appears to be taking an extremely long time for the road surfaces to be completed in construction, including the white paint added to denote junctions, it starts to become apparent that road safety is well down the list of priorities.
Take a stroll down Beech Avenue and contrast the “feel” of the environment. Junctions are clearly marked; very often, they are “open” with good visibility. Houses are set back from the road with pleasant greenery between the house and the road. Driveways have provision for at least two vehicles, minimising the need for on-street parking. One has to wonder whether we are all collectively losing out on our environment with modern builds, while the developers maximise their profit margins.

| Council news
Stand up for the Parish of Bourne It is just over a year since the first meeting was organised by the Town Council to introduce the Neighbourhood Plan to the electorate of the Parish. Since that time cogs have been whirring in the background continuing to ensure that the opportunity to shape the future of the Parish is not lost. A survey conducted through the pages of ‘Discovering Bourne’ in the summer of 2014 elicited some interesting responses but can be summarised in the following strategic points:
• Improvement in variety and number of shops • Lack of job opportunities • Need for a total by pass of Bourne • Inadequate facilities for youth • Inadequate play facilities for youngsters
Now seems to be the right time for people to stand up and let it be known how they would like to see their locality shaped.
A further meeting was held at the beginning of February with interested members of the public. The turnout was pleasing with approximately 40 people entertained with a presentation by Councillors David Mapp and Roy McKinney. The question and answer session that followed was both lively and informative and showed that the people of the Parish really do care about where they live. Perhaps the compilation of a Neighbourhood Plan will now become a reality as the recent meeting has shown that many local people do want to be involved to make this happen. A further meeting is planned in March when the structure of a steering group will be shaped and the topic of ‘What makes Bourne Special’ will be on the agenda. If you wish to become a part of the Neighbourhood Planning team or would like to let us know why you think Bourne is special just drop us a note to enquiries. bournetc@btconnect.com.
| Your Mayor - Bob Russell's bits Civic Pride - (A gentle plea to the minority) On a recent visit to Bourne Woods, an incoming car stopped me in the car park and the driver asked how much it was to park. On hearing that it was free, he remarked to his partner, “Great, lovely wood, free parking - this could be our regular visiting spot”. A short time later, I passed them on the path and, introducing myself as Mayor of Bourne, asked them what they thought of our wonderful facility. Their response was that, due to the amount of dog excrement on the foot paths and the grass area in front of the notice board, they would not be returning. On that day did Bourne lose two possible regular visitors who, in time, may have extended their visits into the town. Civic pride. Casual discarding of litter and dog fouling by the minority is a problem in residential areas and in areas where both recreational walkers and people exercising dogs enjoy their leisure time. 62
D I S C O V E R I N G
Is it in the power of all of us to try a little harder to ensure Bourne is presented in the best possible light? Civic pride. The District Council is in charge of routine street cleaning but, in addition, the Town Council employs a town centre cleaner for work over and above that provided by the District. Work towards “Bourne in Bloom” goes on throughout the year, with some of the planters being the responsibility of town businesses, others in the hands of organisations and some overseen by the Town Council. Local schools are involved, and unsolicited litter picking is regularly done by groups of individuals who just wish to improve the environment of their part of our parish. Civic pride. A gentle plea to the minority.

Discovering...
...HMS Beryl by Rex Needle
O
ne of the great acts of patriotism in Bourne during the Second World War of 1939-45 was a drive to fund a warship for the Royal Navy. It was launched during Warships’ Week, a patriotic appeal by the government for the public to dig deep into their pockets and provide the cash to finance new ships and the town responded magnificently. The appeal in 1942 had a target of £35,000 to buy a minesweeper but in the event, £54,168 (£2.2 million at today’s values) was collected and the town adopted HMS Beryl during an official ceremony at the Abbey Lawn when the Royal Navy handed over a plaque to mark the occasion. In return, Bourne Urban District Council gave a plaque that was eventually fixed to the ship and stayed there for the rest of the war. The 650-ton ship chosen had a chequered history, originally built as a fishing trawler but was bought by the Admiralty in 1939 and renamed HMS Beryl, an auxiliary minesweeper, 150 feet long and powered by a 700 h p engine capable of 12 knots. The first commanding officer was Commissioned Bosun Harry Sellwood (later Lieutenant Commander) and after the ship had been adapted for minesweeping and anti-submarine work, he took it to Malta where it became involved in the long and bitter siege of the island during which action he was awarded the
64
D I S C O V E R I N G
Distinguished Service Cross. HMS Beryl was sunk there during an attack in 1941 and remained submerged until refloated and repaired the following October. Two of her sister ships, Jade and Coral, were wrecked early in 1942 and so Beryl became the largest naval vessel remaining afloat at Malta, the lone bulwark in the campaign becoming nicknamed “the Flagship of Malta” by the islanders. After the Malta campaign, HMS Beryl took part in the Sicily landings leading up to the invasion of Italy but was decommissioned when the war ended in 1945 and the following year was sold to the Iago Steam Trawling Company at Fleetwood in Lancashire and renamed the Red Knight. It continued fishing until 1963 when it was sold for demolition and so ended its days in a maritime scrap yard at Barrow-in-Furness. But the ship and its commander have not been forgotten and in 2011 two street names at a new housing development in Manning Road were named Beryl Mews and Sellwood Terrace as a reminder of the part they played and Bourne’s contribution to the war effort.

By Alder Veterinary Practice, Bourne
Pets’ Corner |
CHANGES IN THE
VETERINARY PROFESSION Since qualifying thirty-two years ago, I have seen many changes in the veterinary profession. Back then, we were just beginning to use the more modern types of anaesthetics, getting better with intravenous fluids, having access to more effective drugs, and learning new surgical procedures. All veterinary practices were privately owned by vets, there was little insurance, and referral practices were mainly confined to the teaching hospitals. Cats were still considered second-class citizens, and it was unheard of for a bill to exceed £100. Most (but not all) practices had an x-ray machine, but only the universities had ultrasound, in-house blood machines or endoscopes. Now, these types of facilities are considered the norm. There are many referral practices with truly amazing facilities and capabilities,(much better than many human facilities in other parts of the world). There is no doubt that vets have much more to offer their clients now than years ago; however, there is a price to pay for this success. Providing these facilities has increased the costs and, unfortunately, the prices charged. This has been carried by the increased use of insurance for the last fifteen years or so, but we are now presented with a moral dilemma. The cost of insurance is now beyond the reach of many people and it is no longer unusual for veterinary charges to be in the thousands (soon
to be the tens of thousands, for some referral situations). Owners want the best for their pets and can end up making a decision between a crippling debt or not giving their pet the best available treatment. In truth, things are often not so black or white. There are often effective, less expensive procedures that can be considered. Sometimes, especially with the more advanced cancer treatments, we need to think long and hard if the treatment is truly in the interests of the animal. As vets, it is even more important in these times that we can give guidance and choice to make honest decisions about a pet’s treatment without the owners being made to feel guilty if they cannot afford, or do not want, the ‹gold standard› treatments. The most important thing for us to achieve is the continued well-being of the animal. It must be remembered that, just because something can be done, does not mean that it should be done! Also, we need to make every effort to keep our treatments affordable and give assistance to spread any large, unexpected expenses over a period of time. If anybody would like to comment on anything discussed in this article, please go to the post on our Facebook page at the Alder Veterinary Practice Bourne.
March Special Offer This month Alder Veterinary Practice is offering 10% off all dog and cat neuters, and identichips for only £6.

Separation Agreements - better than divorce?
W
hen couples need to go their separate ways, it doesn’t always have to be acrimonious. A separation agreement negates the need to state a reason for the breakdown of the marriage and, whilst it can be a precursor to, it doesn’t necessarily need to end in, divorce. These can be useful for people who wish to wrap things up legally, whilst maintaining dignity and calm, often for the benefit of the children.
two years the only way to start divorce proceedings, (a prerequisite to obtaining the most common financial orders) is to state in the petition that the breakdown of the marriage was as a result of the other spouse’s adultery or unreasonable behaviour.
A Separation Agreement is a document prepared by a solicitor which sets out the separating couples’ intentions in relation to property, financial support and child arrangements. It is for both married and unmarried couples. For unmarried couples, it is particularly useful if they wish to continue to jointly own a property, even though they are going their separate ways.
It is quite common for a Separation Agreement to contain provision for the parties to obtain a divorce based on two years’ separation by consent, when they have been separated for long enough; however, the parties do not have to get divorced at all. If the parties do later divorce, then the terms of the Separation Agreement can be incorporated into a Court Order made by consent. There are various options available to separating couples and the specialist Family Law solicitors at Hegarty LLP will discuss all the options available to you and help you to decide what is best for you and your family.
For married couples, the main benefit of a Separation Agreement is that it is a way to obtain financial certainty without having to go through divorce proceedings. This may be desirable in order to preserve an amicable relationship for the sake of the family, particularly where there are children involved. It can be particularly relevant in the first two years after separating, because during those
All of the Family Law solicitors at Hegarty LLP are members of an organisation of Family Lawyers called ‘Resolution’, whose 6,500 members are signed up to a Code of Practice which requires them to always bear in mind the impact of the proceedings on the families involved.

| Golf tip
by Darren Game
“Sharpen your chipping, ready for the coming season”
Here is a little training drill that will improve the quality of the ball strike now, resulting in your chipping being in good shape ready for the season. The two main causes of fluffed chip shots are decelerating through impact and wanting to lift the ball (which causes both “fat” and “thin” shots). This drill can be practised on the course or at home (Be aware of the surroundings though!) Simply place a tee peg on the ground, a couple of centimetres in front of the ball, on the intended target line. The objective is to move the tee peg when you make your chip shot. In doing this, you will have to accelerate the club head through impact and stop wanting to lift the ball. Either of these would not cause the tee peg to move any distance. If you would like a tip about a specific area of your own game, then you could send me it, with a picture or short video clip if you like, to twitter @BOURNEGolf and I will reply to you with your tip or drill. I hope this tip helps you to improve your game. Remember, golf lessons are available in Bourne Golf Studio to help you improve and enjoy your golf more. You can arrange them by contacting me by telephone 01778 395992, text 07827 293679 or email darren@ bournegolfstudio.com

THE LEAGUE OF MENTALMEN Thanks for the Memories!
F
or at least six years, the Bourne Summer Festival has rocked late into the night to the frantic rhythms of Lincoln’s finest… the four piece League of Mentalmen. Sadly though, this month will be remembered for the time they played their farewell gig. The Nag’s Head in Bourne is to be the venue for this full-scale tear-shedding on Friday March 6th and, as a testament to their enormous popularity, the tickets went on sale and disappeared almost immediately! In 2002, four “thirty-somethings”, all good mates and keen students of the links between rock music and alcohol consumption, set out on their wonderful journey. Regular slots in pubs in Lincoln, Peterborough and Bourne soon established their credentials as entertainers and no mean musicians either. They have headlined at the East of England Beer Festival in Peterborough, and have played at several large motorbike rallies, both in the U.K.
and twice in Germany. Local fans have fond memories of many hours of “Mentalmen magic”, either upstairs at “The Nag’s” or in the Well Head marquee, as the rains lashed down and the winds howled, to usher in our typical “long hot summer”! Bass player, Paul, speaks of many occasions where his band’s “quick-fire, hit and run stuff” has enabled large audiences to “just let down their hair for a couple of hours”. Modestly, he does not profess to being part of a “long, twenty minute solo” type of band, but has placed the emphasis firmly on stirring rock favourites, known by everyone and loved by us all. It is with great fondness that he reminisces about the role played by The Nag’s Head in the band’s genesis, calling it “a very special place”. It was because of the way the Bourne folk took the band to their hearts, after their first gig here, that encouraged the Mentalmen to continue with their journey. On the band’s behalf, Paul wishes to thank “Mo and the staff from The Nag’s over the years, through to Richard today”. Thanks, too, to everyone who has been to their gigs. Enjoy the Farewell!
