elcome to our April edition and I’m often surprised at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we’ve moved on from those cold, dark mornings and foggy nights. Blossom is on the trees and our gardens are filling up. Summer is nearly upon us, but the following lines, from the American poet, Robert Frost, make me think that we’re not quite there yet.

“Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party”, thought Robin Williams, that zany, but brilliant American actor who we sadly lost, last year. As we leave behind what has been a quite benign winter hereabouts, thoughts now turn to the outdoors. Whilst nature “parties”, many of us will spend the Easter break in the fresh air, hopefully. Whilst sunning yourself in that hammock (or maybe sheltering from yet another squally shower!) why not relax with April’s issue of “Discovering Bourne”? The Nag’s Head is April’s featured “Eating out Locally” venue, a local sporting legend sits “In the Hot Seat”, and George’s Fish Bar celebrates fourteen years in the town. For That Special Finishing Touch

When a small, independent shop provides such a wide range of quality products, any attempt to classify it becomes tricky – not just a “gift shop”, in part a “home furnishings outlet”, kitchenware? toyshop? greetings card shop? Suffice to say that, with her well-stocked and always immaculately laid-out Concept shop on Bourne’s North Street, whatever Dena Edis is working hard at maintaining, is a wonderful example of what every town should have – a wealth of quality items to beautify any home, to “add that finishing touch”, or to make that special present a truly memorable one. The original Concept, founded by Ruth Stroud on Recreation Road, created a much-needed facility in the town. When it transferred to its present location in 1988, it continued to flourish, nurturing a reputation for friendly service and

quality, affordable giftware. Bringing with her over five years of retailing experience with Hoppers the Jewellers, (where affability with the public and an eye for the best way to display your wares are paramount), Dena became the sole proprietor of Concept in 2006. An eclectic mix of brands is available and stock is constantly evolving, with changes in fashion and colours, ensuring that nothing becomes stale and stuffy. Crabtree and Evelyn beauty products, (being Bourne’s sole source) sit comfortably alongside delicate, hand-made and engraved Norfolk glassware by Animo. Gisela Graham Easter decorations and gifts have been proving very popular, as are the Parlane and Jellycat ranges of trinkets, accessories and toys. The “personal touch”, so important in attracting the public, is high on Dena’s list of attributes. A gift-wrapping service is offered and free local deliveries are available too. An example of her “going that extra mile” will come, later in the year, when Dena will, once again, visit a local retirement home with a range of potential Christmas gifts for her customers who reside there. A regular customer-base at the North Street emporium means that business has remained healthy through recent times. Dena’s striving to keep “individuality” and “quality” at the forefront of her business deserves to keep this vital part of Bourne’s retail landscape alive and well.

Also arriving soon with be the Chilli Festival, which includes a fantastic selection of chillies, ranging from the fairly mild ‘Jalapeno’ to the insane heat of ‘Bhut Jolokia’ and ‘Trinidad Moruga Scorpion’. Chillies are fun and easy to grow in containers in a warm spot in the garden. Why not add extra heat and flavour to your barbecues this summer?

Why choose grafted?

a Stronger, healthier plants with better disease-resistance. a Up to 75% more fruit on a much larger plant. a Earlier cropping, yet with sufficient vigour to crop well later on in the season. Grafted vegetables do well in a warm, sunny area of the garden. Remember to support the plants, regularly tying them as they grow against a stake. Pinching out the side-shoots will encourage a strong, healthy main stem and allow light and air flow to prevent fungal and insect problems, and encourage the fruit to ripen in the sunshine. Water regularly, do not allow the plants to dry out, and feed weekly with a liquid feed such as “Tomorite”. Vegetables available will be aubergines, tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies and peppers; all are ideal for growing outdoors in containers or in a greenhouse. Grafted tomatoes, in particular, have a stronger resistance to soil-borne pests which cause a lot of seed-grown plants to suffer and even entire crops to fail. We have a great selection of vegetables to choose from. With tomato varieties to suit everyone, from cherry tomatoes such as ‘Sweet Petit’, (which bears long, fishboneshaped trusses of shiny red, deliciously sweet and tasty fruit) to the beefsteak tomato, ‘Belriccio’, (with enormous fruits ideal for slicing, frying and grilling). ‘Aviditas’ is a new tomato for 2015 and had the best flavour on trial last year, out of 206 varieties. It has sweet, juicy, mini- plum tomatoes 6

Congratulations to Shane Woodman, a Bourne Primary Academy pupil, who has won our Mother’s Day competition. “What would you say is the nicest thing about your mum?” he was asked. He replied, “She is firm and fair and likes big cuddles. She is caring, nurturing, clever, good fun and a very good mum.” (Sounds perfect to me! – Ed.) The second question asked, “If you had lots of money, what would you buy your mum for Mother’s Day?” The phrase, “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings” springs to mind, when Shane’s winning answer came along as “A jet-white stallion and a very expensive bottle of champagne - and a glass!” How was such a loving little chap to know that jet is actually black?

This is Kirsty Clipston, the fundraiser working with supporters from across South Lincolnshire to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. Kirsty is one of a team of fundraisers working at the Sue Ryder hospice to help raise the £6 million needed to build the hospice’s new in-patient unit. She has special responsibility for looking after the people who are raising money for Thorpe Hall in Bourne and the surrounding villages – a key area of support. Kirsty said, “The people in this area have historically been incredibly generous with their time, efforts and money. We’ve had people biking the length of the country, swimming lakes, shaving their heads, dressing down, baking – you name it, they’ve done it! “My job is to support all those people to make sure they have everything they need to raise as much money as possible for our appeal.” Kirsty, a mum of three, is no stranger to the area – in fact, she’s Stamford born and bred. A former Casterton Community College pupil, Kirsty worked for Bairstow Eves in Stamford for a number of years. “In September 2013, Baston Church of England Primary School found something really exciting at the bottom of the garden...”

The school had a strip of

overgrown land - about fifty feet wide in places - lying parallel to the school building and its drive. It was so overgrown that the gate leading to the land could not even be pushed open and the neighbours to the school could not even see the roof of the school building! Once the discovery had been made, it didn’t take long for the first steps to be taken towards clearing the space to create a stunning location for outdoor learning. The start of the project was marked by a group of young students from The Priory School in Spalding, led by Mrs Emily Walker. Once a week for many weeks, the team travelled to Baston to

weed, cut, chop dead wood, remove brambles and prepare some walkways in the outdoor area. Eventually the area began to take shape and natural ‘zones’ started to form as more and more time was spent on the land. A local farmer then lent a hand by transporting the brush and deadwood away using his big farm trailer. In return, the children of the school chose to donate their fruit waste to his pigs! The whole team were so hard-working and the children and staff of Baston CE School will forever be thankful for all of their hard work. Once enough of the area was clear and safe to work in, the headteacher of the school, Mrs Rebecca Mills, met with Mr David Hawes from Children’s Woodland Adventures to secure professional outdoor teaching and learning provision. It is now the case that every child in the school - from Early Years to Year Six has a full morning or afternoon of outdoor learning every week. The learning itself is carefully and precisely planned against the expectations of the new national curriculum. The teachers of the school work closely with the teaching team from Children’s Woodland Adventures to design exciting and meaningful outdoor learning experiences. All of the outdoor learning at Baston Primary School is centred on a Forest School ethos and is intrinsically linked to the Christian values of the school, as the children experience awe and wonder as they work in God’s beautiful world. Class teachers accompany their classes to Forest School sessions and have the opportunity to assess from afar and see the ‘hidden talents’ within their children come to life. The lessons are proving to be very successful and the skills that the children are developing are now being seen inside the classroom. A range of children, from those with specific cognitive learning needs to those academically gifted, have grown and developed a series of new skills which have had a wholly positive impact on their character: • Perseverance, resilience and grit • Confidence and optimism • Motivation, drive and ambition • Neighbourliness and community spirit • Tolerance, and respect • Honesty, integrity and dignity • Conscientiousness, curiosity and focus The school has great plans to continue developing the provision of outdoor learning. The next step is to build relationships between the pupils of Baston Primary and other schools across the county, country and wider world. They are also currently searching for funding grants, which may help their dreams come true a little faster.

This month’s featured eatery is Bourne’s Nag’s Head, nestling in a corner of the Market Place, right in the centre of town. This “family-friendly food pub”, is deceptively large. Walking in from the town centre, you have no idea it is so huge inside. Yes, looks can be deceiving at times, but what cannot be denied, at least from my own experience of having eaten at “The Nag’s”, is the fact that here is a restaurant where the food is all locally sourced and freshly prepared, the delicious end-product reaching you accompanied with a friendliness, attention to detail and customer-care which we all seek. The enthusiastic team are all very proud of the enviable reputation they have deservedly acquired for home-cooked pub food, with great customer service. It is very clear as to where this pub sits, in this increasingly competitive world of South Lincolnshire’s eating establishments. Being able to cater for a large number in this spacious and appealing dining area is clearly an advantage, as my own party of twenty were delighted to discover on our recent visit. It could have proven problematic, (large numbers and a variety of different meals and requests regarding sauces and steaks) but, without exception, we all thought very highly of the whole experience. However, this is not to label The Nag’s Head as just suitable for large groups of diners. Far from it! Many couples and families visit

on a regular basis. In fact, most Sunday afternoons you’ll find the pub bustling with families enjoying that home-cooked Sunday lunch, completing their meal with a homemade pudding. The menu offers a vast selection of home-cooked food, so there is always something new to try, with the “Specials” menu and dessert menus changing regularly. A unique feature, recently introduced, is their own in-house smoker which includes slow-cooked pulled pork, barbeque ribs and brisket. An added feature of “The Nag’s” is the function room, available for various uses including parties, Christenings and meetings. Providing there is a minimum of fifty guests, then the room is free of charge. So why not give it a go? The Nag’s Head – pub food, locally sourced and home-cooked!

Although April is a lean month for fresh vegetables it is a good month to get ahead by sowing seeds indoors or outside in cold frames and under cloches.

They can be sown in pots, modules or prepared seed beds from which you can transplant them. • Sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot(if the soil is cold and wet), cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves and salad leaves. • Sow indoors; chillies, peppers, celery, Florence fennel, courgettes and summer squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting broccoli and sweetcorn. • Another useful job this month is to prepare seed beds ready for sowing. Soil should be broken down into small even particles, with stones and woody material removed. Rake the soil over until you get a fine “tilth”. Don’t rake when the soil is too wet. If the soil is dry, water the base of the drill generously before sowing; if wet, sprinkle a thin layer of sand before sowing.

• 2kg. pork shoulder • 500ml. barbeque sauce • 50g. brown sugar • 50ml. bourbon whisky • 2 tbsp. honey • 1 tsp. paprika • 100g. tomato ketchup

1. Combine all of the The Nags Head ingredients of your marinade in a bowl and mix well. 2. Pour it over the pork shoulder in an ovenproof dish and rub in. 3. Cover with cling-film and leave the pork in the dish in a fridge overnight to absorb the flavours of the marinade. 4. Pre-heat oven to 130 degrees. 5. Add 200 ml. of water to the oven-proof dish with your pork in and cover with tin foil before placing it in the oven. 6. Cook in the oven for ten hours.

7. Then remove the dish from the oven and remove the tin foil. Using a sharp knife, remove the rind and discard. To test the meat, press with a sharp knife, and it should be ‘like a hot knife through butter’ - if not, allow another one to two hours and repeat. 8. Once it is ready, gently pull the meat apart with two forks and it should just fall apart. Mix the meat well with any residual marinade left in the dish and leave to rest. 9. The meat and flavour will improve if left overnight or you can serve it straight away. 10. If you wish to leave it overnight, allow approximately thirty minutes for the meat to cool sufficiently, then pour the sliced meat and all juices into a container and place in the fridge. 11. Re-heat the meat as required the next day in a foiled oven-proof dish for approximately thirty minutes. 12. The meat can be used on its own, or how about in flour tortilla wraps with some grated Cheddar cheese for burritos, or just in chunky sandwiches? This is one very versatile meat!

That generosity comes in a variety of guises, but for the month of April, his fish bar with its large, airy and spotlessly clean eating area will, no doubt, become even busier than usual. The reason? No, George’s offer is more in the way of saying a massive “Thank-you” to everyone who has stood by him, through several troubled times in recent years. A year ago, for example, an internationally-renowned food giant landed in the area, prompting George to instigate a most impressive campaign to raise awareness that his fish bar, (literally “just round the corner” on Cherry Holt Road), could provide equally good fare and, if you’d rather, healthier unprocessed food, at that! For a wedding reception, (for which the large area available for car parking would be a real benefit), Mary recommends the use of the barn itself for the catering, bar and dancing area, whilst the addition of a marquee, abutting the north side, with access through double doors, would provide ample seating accommodation for around one hundred guests. What’s That All About Then?

Sometimes called “All Fools’ Day”, April 1st is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain. Whilst some people see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, (closely following the vernal equinox), others believe it stems from the adoption of the new (Gregorian) calendar, over five hundred years ago. The “New Year” was to become January 1st and many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and so continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1st. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on “fool’s errands” or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe. April Fools’ Day is observed throughout the Western world. Practices include sending someone on a “fool’s errand,” looking for things that don’t exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things. The French call April 1 Poisson d’Avril, or “April Fish.” French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying “Poisson

d’Avril” when the prank is discovered. Famous pranks include the following: a Sweden Covers their TVs in Tights - In 1962, Sweden’s only television channel announced that the station could be viewed in colour, if viewers were to cut up a pair of tights and place them over the screen, which would bend the television’s light to make it appear in colour. Thousands of gullible Swedes fell into the expensive trap, only to realize they were victims of a hoax. Many reported that they had felt this floating sensation, one listener even stating that she and her friends lifted from their chairs to float around the room together. a Home Grown Spaghetti Trees - One of the most famous April Fools’ pranks occurred in 1957, when the BBC news programme “Panorama” reported on Switzerland’s spaghetti harvest. The region’s mild winter and lack of natural spaghetti pests allowed for the fruitful production of home-grown spaghetti. The BBC received many calls from people interested in growing their own spaghetti and were told that they should place a sprig of spaghetti in tomato sauce!

Mention the name David (“Plonk”) Johnson to anyone in the local sporting fraternity and memories and anecdotes will soon flow. This all-rounder was a key player in Terry Bates’s highly successful Bourne Town F.C. teams of the 1960s and 1970s, a free-scoring winger, whose ferocity with the boot was matched by a similar ability to thrash a cricket ball to all corners of the Abbey Lawn, (and sometimes over Tabor’s and Eddie’s chip shop!) when representing town and county on the adjacent pitch. David also played football and hockey for Lincolnshire, and in 1990, as Coach for Lincolnshire C.C. Colts, he toured Australia. After Dowsby Primary and Bourne Grammar Schools, David applied to join the R.A.F. but, following a discussion with Stuart Stroud, during an evening cricket match in 1962, he joined the Bourne Hygienic Laundry. Over fifty years later and he’s still there, through the “Bourne Services” era, and now trading as Johnson’s since March 2014. Very much a devoted family man, David married Sue Dean in 1967, and daughters Linda and Lisa have since presented them with four very sporty grandchildren, two of whom are already representing Lincolnshire at cricket.

1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?

I was born in Dowsby, where we had to make our own entertainment, playing football and cricket in a local farmer’s field, or on the road at the junction with Dowsby Fen. It was a friendly village, with most people employed on the land. I would work during school holidays, using a horse and harrows to pick potatoes from the fields.

2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Apart from my parents, it would be the late Stuart Stroud, co-owner of “Bourne Hygienic Laundry”. Stuart believed that everyone has some good in them and it is our responsibility to bring it out. He encouraged me to develop my sporting and management skills, later becoming a Director of the company.

3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? Sir Alex Ferguson, for his ability to bring out the best in people, and being respected. Brian Clough was another sporting legend who 32

had the ability to build a team that worked for one another, achieving the highest level, whilst keeping costs under control.

4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Hard-working, kind, caring, trusting, loyal.

5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

The town seriously needs an all-weather sports facility for the five schools, with adults using it at nights and weekends. I am not against the development of Bourne town centre, but reducing our car parking spaces is a disgrace, as it takes trade away from local shops.

6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?

My mother told me that manners cost nothing – pigs grunt!! Prepare yourself for work, by attending interviews – be smart and polite. There is plenty of work available but you may have to work unsociable hours.

Time is Tight - Act Now Before the End of the Tax Year As the end of the tax year approaches, many of us are unaware of the financial planning opportunities that are available, just for the current year. These are, in effect, “use it or lose it” allowances. Most of us know about ISA allowances, but have we actually made the most of them? There are also major opportunities for pension planning, even for non-earners – who doesn’t want the government to give them money towards their savings? Under the new rules, the money is no longer necessarily locked away for years. If you are over 55, you can put the money away today, claim the tax relief and take it straight back out again, making a gain of 25% if you are a non-taxpayer, (even basic rate payers would make 6.25%!) This checklist covers actions which you could take to reduce your tax bill before the tax year end on April 5th 2015. The items on this list will not apply to everyone and it is not exhaustive. As with all financial matters, you should take INDEPENDENT financial advice, before making any decisions. All these transactions must be completed by the end of the tax year - as it is during the Easter holiday, in practice the deadline this year is Thursday April 2nd.

• Consider pension contributions for children and grandchildren.

• Maximise contributions for this year. • Use carry-forward rules (unused allowance from previous three tax years). • Pay contributions to widen basic rate tax band and reduce tax on capital gains, investment bond gains, etc.

• Make contribution up to maximum of £15,000. • Junior ISAs for children and grandchildren up to £4,000 (if child does not have a Child Trust Fund).

Gift Aid

• Make donations (donor in a higher tax bracket) – can claim back the difference between the basic and higher rates of income tax on amount donated.

Inheritance tax (IHT)

• Make use of annual exemption of £3,000 (plus last year’s £3,000 exemption if not used). • Also, make regular exempt gifts out of income. • Gifts could be to life assurance arrangements, used as a means of removing tax from an estate by providing the means to pay the tax liabilities.

Investment bonds

• If cashing in a bond or surrendering segments, postponing a surrender until April 6th 2015 means that it would fall into 2015/16 and tax would not be payable until January 1st 2017.

• Use 2014/15 annual exemption of £11,000. • For trustees, the annual exemption for trusts is, generally, £5,550. I hope that this helps you make the most of your tax year end!

“If I should die, think only this of me...” - Advice for survivors Like it or not, more and more of our lives are being lived and stored on-line, with banking, on-line pensions and investments, social media and e-mail. But what happens when we die? Many people don’t think about this and unless you make specific plans for your digital after-life, your “digital assets” stand a good chance of being mis-managed, or they could disappear entirely. You should start by writing down all the websites you use weekly or monthly that require log-in information. Then, once you have this list, you can decide how you want your digital assets managed after your death. Many people write down the details of their

on-line accounts, including user-names and passwords, together with answers to security questions. This is then placed in a sealed envelope and addressed to their executors, to be kept alongside their will. However, they should remember to regularly update the list if passwords are changed. User names and passwords should not be included in your will because it can become a public document after death. You could also use an on-line password management service to store your passwords; you will need to either provide your executor with the master code or leave a note of this securely with your will.

“Digital Detoxing” Has it Really Come to This?

In a world where the ownership of technological devices is taken for granted by young and not-so-young alike, it is creating alarm in some quarters. Some travel companies are now using the buzz-phrase, “Digital Detoxing”, to sell their wares – who could possibly resist, when a resort is described as offering “a tech-free zone for travellers craving a braincation”? Surely, you’d love to visit a hotel which offers a “black-out option”, where “all devices are surrendered upon check-in.” (This would include mobile phones, iPhones, Blackberrys, pagers and camera phones.) “Digital Detoxing”, however, has caused more than a stir in at least one school recently. The head teacher of a Shropshire prep. school, Martin Stott, has recently experimented with a “digital detox week”, in an effort to wean children and 42

their parents from on-line devices. He wants pupils to read a lot more, look out of windows on car journeys, play cards and “people-watch”, instead of being totally absorbed by technology. His fear is that our children are growing up, unable to read other people’s body language and facial expressions, if “glued” to their mobiles and headphones whilst in public places. Children in restaurants on iPads, while their parents chat, are missing out on so much, he suggests, whilst “people-watching, a great pastime for many, has been lost to a degree.” He isn’t advocating not using the phone at all, but more an awareness that leisure could, and should, involve novelties such as conversation and actually looking at what’s outside their car window, rather than on the screen in front of them!

This month I want to write about a subject that I am very passionate about, one which will affect 25% of the population, but which is very much taboo. There is a stigma around it. People are scared by it. People avoid talking about it. Those suffering are sometimes rejected and kept at arm’s length. That subject is Mental Health.

Even some police officers argue that mental health is not a policing matter, but the fact is that it is very much a part of core policing. Whether it is crime, or a concern for the welfare of someone, police officers will nearly always be the first to deal with it. No studies have been completed, to the best of my knowledge, to demonstrate just how much police time is taken up in dealing with mental health, but there are some very respected commentators who estimate that it could be about 25% rising to 50%, when you include addictions! Unfortunately, police training in this subject is, or certainly has been, very poor. This is now being addressed by the College of Policing, and more locally within Lincolnshire. I currently sit on a Mental Health Working Group looking at how, working with partner agencies, we can deal with mental health more effectively and how we can divert those in need away from the criminal justice system. To me, this is very important.

Someone who is suffering from poor mental health is in need of medical care and should not be criminalised or left to self-harm and so be sucked into a downward spiral of police, courts and exclusion. Mental health legislation is a huge subject, far too vast to cover here. If any readers are interested in learning a little more about mental health from a policing perspective, then please look at https://mentalhealthcop.wordpress. com/. This is the work of a West Midlands police officer, Michael Brown, who is now considered, internationally, to be a policing expert on mental health and who has written over 500 blogs on the subject. What I have realised over the last few months and years is that the police often deal with people who are unaware of where they can get help, support and advice on mental health issues. These people are the ones with mental health issues, their carers, family and friends. This in turn fails to reduce the demand on policing when officers repeatedly deal with the same people, day in, day out as well as failing them to find the support they need. In order to help to address this and direct people to the support that best suits them, I have gathered some contact information for various mental health charities which are listed below. The hip is one of our larger joints and, on standing, each hip supports about a third of our bodyweight. To assist with this, there is an internal lattice of bony ‘scaffolding’ - an extensive set of ligaments and a large set of muscles provide the hip with further stability, strength and an ability to move. There are a number of different possible injury sites affecting the hip that we see in clinic. Using the information provided by a patient, performing relevant tests and using our palpation skills (sense of touch), osteopaths aim to diagnose the problem and, if suitable, use conservative treatment to try and fix the problem. Pain in the groin area is a common symptom for a problem with the hip joint but can also indicate an issue with the adductor muscles (inner thigh muscles) or even the joint at the front of the pelvis. Bursae are special structures that act like pads, separating tendons from bones to prevent friction. There are three main ones which can be occasionally irritated, for example, through laying on hard surfaces, climbing stairs or even getting in and out of a vehicle.

Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath Sometimes, a lower back problem involving some of the nerves that supply the hip joint and surrounding muscles can refer pain to the hip area, creating the impression that it’s the hip that is problematic when it isn’t. To confuse matters further, there is sometimes minimal awareness of any lower back pain at all. In adults, there are a handful of hip problems ranging from the usually painless clicking hip syndrome to tears of the labrum (a special connective tissue around the joint) and painful osteoarthritis (OA). OA affects a large number of people at various stages of life and for a multitude of reasons. Whilst it is degenerative, and not something that can be reversed, there is good evidence to suggest that forms of conservative manual treatment, for example osteopathy, physiotherapy, acupuncture and remedial massage, can be of value in targeting pain and may help to alleviate some of the associated disability through stiffness. This may in turn then allow a patient to embark on an exercise programme to strengthen supporting musculature so they remain comfortable whilst standing and walking for longer. Addressing lifestyle issues to improve weight and exercise levels, as well as reducing the amount carried and the use of walking aids, can all be beneficial too. Lie down on your stomach with arms and legs extended. Contract upper and lower back muscles as you lift arms and legs off the ground. Hold for a count of three, then return to the start, making sure to engage your abs. Do three sets of ten reps. Keep your head in line with your spine.

2. Airplane lunge

Lower into a deep, runner’s lunge keeping front knee in line with ankle. Hold for a count of two. With torso glued to thigh, raise hands to sides. Hold for a count of three. Alternate sides. Do ten reps. Keep back flat as you bring your upper body forward.

4. Sit-ups for stomach muscles. Begin with knees bent, lying flat on the floor with both hands up in the air. Raise your head and shoulders up, whilst lowering one hand, then the other as you lift head and shoulders up. Repeat each hand six times, holding up for three seconds each time.

Clean Your P.C. with CCleaner 5

Since I first documented the use of CCleaner in this magazine back in 2012, the utility has undergone a number of new iterations. Let’s take a fresh look at the tool and see what it has to offer. The first thing you need to do is download the latest version (currently v5.03). Do a search in your browser for ‘CNET CCleaner’ and use the link on the CNET download.com site, as this is guaranteed virus-free. Alternatively, download it from Piriform, the makers of the CCleaner application. The original pre-version-5 tools are still there, but have been improved upon, and there are a number of new utilities that you can use to clean up and manage your PC and start-up. As I have previously covered how to run the tool, I will limit this article to show the options available. If you need help using CCleaner, then please contact LITES PC.

Main Cleaner: On opening, the first screen you will see is the main cleaning screen. The elements selected by default are the ‘standard’ clean, and it is safe to click “Run Cleaner” to action the process. There are other more in-depth cleaning options to the left. Make sure you understand what these are before selecting these (note: none of them remove your personal data, so that will be safe). Application Cleaner: CCleaner now has an application cleaner tab. Click on “Applications” and you can use the tool to clean up your browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox etc.) as well as other leading applications. This is very handy for when you are having issues with your browser, as it can remove items that are ‘clogging up’ your access and possibly impacting internet availability. Registry Cleaner: The original Windows Registry cleaner is still there, but it has been updated. This can be used to clean up the Windows Registry area to improve performance. should always back-up the registry first. You will be prompted to do this by CCLeaner. As before, this is a two-step process – Scan then Fix. In the many years I’ve been using the tool I have never had to restore a registry backup, but take one nonetheless - it doesn’t take long to do. Tools Section: There are now a stack of tools that can be used; Uninstall is an alternative uninstaller to the standard Control Panel option. Startup allows you to view what programs start in the background when Windows fires up (very useful for doing a cleanup – remove anything you don’t need auto-started). Disk Analyzer checks your disk drive and displays the type of files that are using up your storage space. This is handy if you are running low on disk space and not sure why. Duplicate Finder searches your drive for duplicated files. System Restore allows you to manage your Windows-generated Restore points. Drive Wiper will remove data off any selected drive. It can be a simple Windows delete or a more in-depth secure data removal, to prevent any data being retrieved. Options: These are the various options and settings associated with CCleaner. I’d recommend leaving these as they are, unless you have a specific need.

Tailored Holidays Just For You April sees us taking a look at a typical example of one of my “tailored holidays”. With over twenty years in the industry and my extensive travel experience of most parts of the world, why not just let me show you some of the best places to go, what to do and how you can make the most of your hard-earned break? How about a short break in the fascinating, “delightful” Turkish city of Istanbul, for instance?

Day One

After breakfast, you’ll set off on a full day of sightseeing in Istanbul. You will start with a visit to the renewed Sultanahmet Mosque, known popularly as The Blue Mosque. It is an incredibly beautiful mosque, known for its blue Iznik (Nicaea) tiles and its six minarets. Continue on to the Hippodrome, once the vast arena that functioned as the heart of sporting events, (chariot races and athletics) and political activities of the old city. From here, we go to the nearby Hagia Sophia, the Church of Divine Wisdom. Ranking as one of the greatest marvels of world architecture, this awe-inspiring building was constructed as a basilica in the sixth century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian. After lunch, your next visit will be Topkapi Palace which, for more than four hundred years, was the imperial residence of the Ottoman Sultans. It is now home to the priceless collections of porcelain, jewellery, calligraphy and many masterpieces of art. The tour will end with the visit to the Grand Bazaar, the vast and legendary covered market, that is the biggest souk in the world, with nearly four thousand shops of antiques, jewellery and carpets. Here, you can experience the famous Turkish coffee from Sark Kahvesi, (historical coffee roasters, located in the Grand Bazaar). Each variety has been prepared with a blend of traditional knowledge, experience and an abiding “Love of Coffee”. I would suggest lunch at Matbah Restaurant, www.matbahrestaurant.com . It is situated in a beautifully landscaped garden - a peaceful oasis in the middle of Istanbul. Sitting in the heart of the old city and surrounded by all the

We will end the tour with a visit to the Spice Market. Built in 1664, this large, stone building includes a number of shops (and a restaurant on the second floor, which has long held a venerable place in the life of the city). This collection of shops was actually part of the complex of the adjacent Yeni Camii (the “New Mosque,” whose construction started in 1597). Since its construction, the Egyptian Spice Market has specialized in the sale of exotic spices. Today, these lovely small shops continue to sell spices and now also sell dried fruits, nuts, seeds, and other edibles. Some of the shops are gradually being transformed into shops featuring jewellery and other high-margin items. Continue our tour with a visit to the 17th century Egyptian Bazaar, a charming marketplace that ranks as the second largest covered bazaar in Istanbul. Here, the pungent and savoury aroma of exotic oils, herbs and

spices has perfumed the arched, stone corridors for over three hundred years. Even today, this is the main address for those who want to purchase nuts, honey, dried fruits, traditional sweets and herbal remedies. During our visit to the Spice Market, why not call at Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir’s shop – the inventor of Turkish delight? From the time of its founding during the Ottoman Empire, the name Haci Bekir has become a legend in Ottoman and Turkish confectionery and he remains a leading symbol of this art.

Discovering...

...the Hull evacuees by Rex Needle

ne of the exemplary patriotic acts by the people of Bourne during the Second World War of 1939-45 was in giving homes to hundreds of children who lived in sensitive areas of the country that were likely to be bombed by enemy aircraft. The north east coast of England where British shipping became a regular target for enemy planes was one of the main areas to be evacuated and those children who were sent to safety in Bourne came mainly from three junior and infant schools in Hull. It was a step into the unknown for all of them and many were frightened at being away from their families for the first time but soon they were being made to feel at home. Arrangements for their stay were in the hands of the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Voluntary Service [the WVS] under their chairman, the late Mrs Kate Cooke, who was subsequently awarded the MBE for community service. The first evacuees arrived by train accompanied by their teachers, each one labelled and carrying a bag or suitcase containing their belongings, and marched in a crocodile from the railway station to the Corn Exchange where the WVS ladies were waiting with cups of tea and comfort. Small parties of children were then taken around Bourne to the various homes selected by the billeting officer and the householders came out

and chose the children they wanted to live with them. They were all soon allocated a family and settling into their new homes while others were sent to Bourne House in West Street, a large property that had been bought by Kesteven District Council for use as dormitory accommodation. Evacuees continued to arrive at regular intervals and over the next three years, a total of 900 boys and girls from the Hull area were eventually found homes in and around Bourne. The children were soon participating in the life of the town. Most of them attended the Abbey Primary School but accommodation was limited and so overflow classes were held in the schoolroom at the Baptist Church in West Street. They remained in Bourne until the war ended in the summer of 1945 although it was the early months of 1946 before arrangements were made for them all to return home. Some remained in Bourne, married and brought up families, while others went back to continue their lives but their stay made a lasting impression and our links with the Hull evacuees have continued to this day.

LUNGWORM in Dogs

There has been a robust advertising campaign recently regarding the dangers of lungworm. Although it is important that owners should be aware of lungworm, the recent advertising has been designed to frighten owners! Lung worm ( Angiostrongylus vasorum) infection is a serious and potentially fatal disease, but please consider the following; 1. Cases of lungworm are still uncommon. There has been a slight increase over recent years, but remains low in this area. 2. Nearly all cases of lungworm can be successfully cured, if the symptoms are recognised and treatment is started early enough. 3. Lungworm can only be picked up from contact with certain types of slugs and snails (or their environment). 4. Young or inquisitive dogs are more likely to be interested in slugs and snails and are more at risk than older,“wiser” dogs. 5. Spring and autumn, when slugs and snails are most numerous, are the times of greatest risk. It is important that vets and owners are aware of the different symptoms possible to ensure early diagnosis and treatment .

There are three main symptom types: 1. Progressive coughing and breathing problems with exercise intolerance . This is the commonest form of the disease. 2. Bleeding disorder. Owners may notice bleeding in the whites of the eyes or gums. Also, soft swellings may be noticed over the body. This is a less common form of the disease but is more difficult to diagnose and can become serious, if not treated quickly. 3. Neurological disorder. This is the least common and is again hard to diagnose as there is a wide range of symptoms such as behavioural changes, paralysis, fits and back pain. In all of these cases, prompt treatment is usually curative. There are several treatments available and are medications that are regularly already used to treat other worm infections. At present, there is only one product, “Advocate”, which can prevent lung worm, when used monthly. This product treats fleas, mites and roundworm as well as lungworm but does not treat ticks or tapeworm. “Advocate” can be used by any owner who feels their dog is at a high risk of contracting lungworm, or by anyone who just feels safer using it. However, it should also be noted that tickborne diseases are becoming gradually more common, as well as lung worm, and remember this product does not treat ticks. This is a difficult area that needs an individual decision. Please contact your vet if you need further advice.

Bourne Badminton Club was founded in 1919, using premises at The Vestry Hall on North Street. It wasn’t quite big enough for a full-size court to be marked out, but that wasn’t enough to stop the hardy players in those distant days. A break of six years between 1939 and 1945 meant a temporary halt to proceedings, and the club continued to meet in the post-war era, despite the deterioration of the Vestry Hall. In the late 1970s, due to the poor condition of the hall, the club moved to Wherry’s warehouse and, with three courts now available, membership increased to over fifty, with three club nights a week. More problems for “The B.B.C.” arrived within a decade, when Wherry’s and the surrounding buildings were re-developed into shops, to become The Burghley Centre. However, as the Vestry Hall had been improved, the club was able to return there, until 1990, when the club arrived in its present home in the Bourne Leisure Centre. Bourne Badminton Club now plays on Friday evenings, between 7pm and 9:30pm, with four courts available to adults and juniors, (from eleven years of age). There are currently almost thirty members. New players are always welcome and can come and give it a go for free for their first visit, during a tenmonth season, running from September to June. The last ninety-odd years have not been without hardships and hurdles placed in their way, but, according to long-standing stalwart, Julian Cooke, “We have just been dealt a bombshell this week, (mid-March), which could kill the club stone-dead! South Kesteven have increased our nightly fees from £25 a night to £91, from April 2015. If they don’t offer any concession, then the club will have to fold, as I can’t ask the members to pay an equivalent increase in the membership fee.” Troubled times indeed and it is to be hoped that, with a town population increasing at its present rate, and the on-going provision of a wide range of leisure opportunities being the responsibility of a Council, then common sense can prevail and a solution, which could resolve this potential threat can be found … and found very soon!

BOURNE ACADEMY CELEBRATES A NIGHT OF EXCEPTIONAL TALENT

n a climate of television talent shows from the home comfort of your living room, Bourne Academy brought us the real “live” experience. ‘Bourne Academy’s Got Talent’ is not just any school talent show, it is a special night indeed. The judges are treated like royalty, as they tread the red carpet to their comfortable thrones that twizzle (yes, just like ‘The Voice’). On this occasion Councillor Helen Powell (Arts Link Governor), Gemma Boaler (BMG Chrysalis Records) and Darren Maddison (Polka Dot Academy) seized the opportune moments to compliment a variety of musical and vocal talent in the first act – that had a ‘The Voice’ theme – with genuine awe and excitement at the array of performers that demonstrated their exceptional talents. The winning act of the single-performer entries was Leona Bilby (Yr.12) from Quinnell House, who as a singer and guitarist songwriter, performed her own song in her new-folk style, receiving high praise from the judges indeed: “You are ready now! The complete package - I could happily listen to you all day,” remarked Gemma Boaler. In second place was Craig Sleeman (Yr.10) with his comic, musical theatre rendition of the Fiddler on the Roof classic, ‘If I were a rich man’. “It was highly original”, exclaimed Darren Maddison. In third place was Jamie Booth (Yr.10) for his own rendition of ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis. “You resurrected a classic 90s hit and made it very much your own – I enjoyed it better than the original,” added Cllr. Helen Powell.

Winning act of the mixed entries was Harry Preen and Sam Harding The second act involved students who were able to enter in larger mixed groups. The winning acts of the mixed entries were Harry Preen (Yr. 13) and Sam Harding (Yr.12) who make up half of the successful band, Albion. The sixth form students combined musically to wow the judges with a stellar performance of one of their own compositions in their trademark acoustic indie style - a delightful parting shot to a wonderful evening’s entertainment of youthful enthusiasm. The final words of the night came from Darren (head judge): “This school is a clear beacon for the Performing Arts and tonight’s talent on show is a testament to all the hard work and dedication that the staff and students put in. This school clearly recognises fully the value of a thriving Performing Arts department, which can be a rarity these days, but a sheer pleasure to be a part of.”

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Not too fast BUT not too slow either! Spring is with us, and we all start to drive out to our local attractions and enjoy what Lincolnshire has to offer as the sun starts to shine. These slightly longer journeys inevitably involve an element of driving on single-carriageway roads, controlled by “national” speed signs (the white circular sign with black diagonal). On my driving lessons I like to cover how to assess the severity of bends on these type of roads so as to avoid losing traction with the road surface due to heavy braking or late gear changes. Assessing the correct speed that reflects the driving conditions is a key skill. There are many factors to consider when deciding on what is actually the correct speed at which to be driving. We all have a responsibility to at least consider other road users on our journeys. We should be mindful of the effect our own driving has on others, in terms of tailgating and also of driving too slowly. Driving a car at a constant 40mph in a national speed limit for instance, regardless of the conditions, will simply not be accepted by many drivers with tight schedules. I’m not encouraging speeding here, but what I am trying to emphasise is the hazard involved in driving too slowly for the conditions. I travel regularly to Peterborough, Grantham, Stamford and Spalding on my driving lessons and I see on a daily basis, some very dangerous overtaking of slower moving vehicles on single carriageway roads. Often I have noted, (without wanting to stereotype), it involves businessmen of roughly my age in their 40s and 50s, clearly with deadlines to meet, driving fairly powerful company cars, and with their impatience to overtake the slow moving vehicle, their judgement gets affected as the “red mist” comes down, and an extremely dangerous

overtake then occurs. Whilst it is easy to blame the driver who has done the dangerous overtake, we should be clear on the original source of the hazard situation that developed. I have seen a stream of fifteen to twenty vehicles heading out to Stamford all being held back by a car being driven too slowly, and then watched every single vehicle overtake on roads that are not designed with too many stretches to enable safe overtaking. It arguably borders on being unfair to pressure drivers with this kind of stress, and it is inconsiderate too. I appreciate that there will often be no “intent”. I doubt the slow drivers concerned are deliberately going out of their way to annoy and frustrate other drivers, but in much the same way as failing to accord precedence on zebra crossings would fail a driving test, it should be appreciated that routinely driving at 40 in a 60 would ALSO fail a driving test. There is a fabulous little circuit heading out to Stamford that would enable me to very quickly assess a driver’s ability regarding control of the vehicle, adapting to different driving conditions and level of observations when driving – do get in touch if you would like to organise driving it for yourself or a member of your family [07894 262 718].
