Each month Discovering Bourne will be showcasing stories written by talented young students from Bourne Academy.

The Girl in the Shadows

A Short Story by Emma Shrapel, (A Year 11 Student at Bourne Academy) Part 3 (of 3) “No, we shall not leave!” shouted the first man to step forward. At this, the girl in the blue cloak turned to look at the young man through her thick hair. “You can say whatever you want to protect yourself, but you’re not fooling anyone,” he went on. “Only pure evil possesses your body and we plan to stop you.” With that, he drew a dagger from his boot and launched it through the air at the girl.

The Cutting Room

However, the dagger had only just left his hand, when it was flung sideways by an invisible force. The dagger clattered to the ground, just as one of the ten spears was levitated into the air and spiralled towards the man. With an ear-splitting sound, the spear drove itself into the man’s body, shattering his pelvis and lower torso. He immediately fell to his knees before falling forwards onto the ground, causing the spear to drive itself right through his body. Only silence remained, as the other men looked at their fallen friend, horror engraved into their features. “Do not test my patience again. Leave now, if you value your lives.” In the days that followed, the girl in the shadows drifted in and out of a deep sleep that was full of visions, but these were not ordinary visions. They were what she had always wanted; the answer to curing the curse. Two must die at her hand in an act of defence over two centuries. One had already been killed, one more must die.

Bourne Outdoor Swimming Pool Re-opened on May 23rd at 10.30 a.m.

“The baths are open, there’s a cricket match on the Abbey Lawn and the chip shop’s serving new tates”- what more could we have asked for, in those distant 1960s’ days, except for the pool to be heated, maybe? Well now it is … and the summer is here at last! It’s twenty-five years since Bourne Outdoor Pool Preservation Trust leased the pool from Bourne United Charities and took over the running of this, one of the largest of the few surviving outdoor pools in the country. Now operated and

maintained by volunteers, with the exception of the qualified lifeguards who are on duty during opening times, all other work to keep the pool running is undertaken on a voluntary basis by the management and a dedicated group of volunteers. For all details regarding opening hours, admission charges and lots more, visit www.bourneoutdoorswimmingpool.org

Congratulations Isobel You’re a Winner! Huge congratulations to our Easter Egg Hunt Competition winner, Isobel Thompson from Northorpe. Isobel was completely shocked recently, as she thought her grandparents were taking her into town to have her feet measured, but a quick detour into Sweet Sensations and voila!! - she’s a winner, and here she is receiving her chocolate explosion prize from Claire Saberton. “Isobel brought a tear to my eye, she was so polite,” Claire commented, and, after a week of SATs at Thurlby Primary School, the chocolate was a great treat for Isobel. She’s even promised to share her prize with her brother! Claire went on to say that meeting such a kind young lady was one of the best parts of her job. Please keep entering our competitions - this month we have £150 in vouchers to win. 10

Haconby Music Concert to Support African Schools

Local Haconby couple, Gill and Terry Stoneman, have been involved with education in Malawi for many years. It all started in the 1960s when they lived there for three years and Terry was Principal of a small Teacher Training College on the shores of Lake Malawi. Whilst there, they made friends with Reverend Len and Maisie Viner who told Gill and Terry that teenagers had been carol singing on their doorstep to raise money for Malawi. So the Viners, with their vast experience of living in Malawi, offered to help in any way they could. The Viners felt that they were too old to return, so Gill and Terry jumped at the chance and made their first return visit in 2001 and they were asked by the children’s teacher, Caroline Hansford, to be leaders of a school group. They went again in 2003 and converted the school project into a registered charity, with which they have been involved ever since. Gill and Terry hope to return again in a couple of year’s time. Malawi Education Link was set up in 1999 to help support schools in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. It has enabled UK youngsters and adult volunteers to work on projects to build classrooms, teachers’ houses and toilets for Malawian children. They often have to learn in

classrooms of mud and thatch which are unusable in the rainy season. The projects are carried out in partnership with the local communities. They make and fire the bricks and provide their own skilled building workers. The project buys the cement (twice the price in Malawi as here), the door frames and roofing materials. UK students whitewash walls, stencil maps and times-tables on them and meet Malawian children playing football and netball and learning about their culture. The charity also provides some stationery, pens, pencils, sports equipment, clothing and items for local clinics. The project is run by a retired teacher, Caroline Hansford and a group of Trustees and supporters who help to raise funds. Monies go directly to the project – there are no overheads.

On Saturday July 11th, Woven Chords, a local “World Music” choir, will sing to raise money for The Malawi Education Link at St Andrew’s Church Haconby at 7-30pm: tickets £8. The concert will include songs from many parts of the globe, but half of the set will be dedicated to beautiful African songs. Concert tickets are £8 and available from Wild Heart Cafe, Angel Precinct, Bourne.

by Waterside Garden Centre

Gardening Tips for June 1. Baskets and containers Make the most of your hanging baskets and containers this year and ensure they provide a display to be proud of by using a controlled-release fertiliser and water-retention gel in the compost. Check that hanging basket brackets will hold the weight and replace any that are suspect.

2. Pest Watch During the warm days of summer, pests such as red spider mite, aphids and whitefly, and diseases including mildew, rust and blackspot can really take hold and get out of control. Check your plants regularly for signs of trouble and deal with it quickly to keep them strong and healthy. Slugs and snails can also be a problem, so make sure you stock up with your favourite control methods. Some plants, such as roses, need to be checked very regularly.

3. Pond Care Green ‘pea soup’ water in ponds is often caused by a lack of aquatic plants. Make sure your pond is stocked with plenty of oxygenating plants and “marginals”, and cover at least a third of the water surface with floating plants – including water-lilies.

4. Water and feed your plants You don’t need to regularly water all the plants in your garden, but all of those recently planted – especially bedding – and plants in containers and baskets, will appreciate a good soak to keep them growing strongly. Watering little and often isn’t the best way as it encourages surface rooting and makes the plants more susceptible to drought. Feeding is also important. Either apply a liquid fertiliser regularly or add a longlasting, once a year controlled-release fertiliser to the soil or compost.

5. Strawberries Strawberries need pampering if you want to enjoy the juiciest of fruits this summer. Water regularly – especially plants in pots or strawberry towers – and feed weekly with a high potash liquid fertiliser. Also watch out for slugs and birds who love the fruit as much as we do.

6. Plants of the Month During the summer there’s so much to choose from for instant colour, including: roses, buddleia, cistus, deutzia, hebes, philadelphus, lilacs and weigela, together with: aquilegia, delphiniums, hardy geraniums, irises and lupins.

Well let’s hope that we have those lovely warm, long sunny days that herald midsummer and that the plants benefit from the rise in temperature and the sunshine. While it is highly unlikely that there will be a frost, the bugs and beasties will be enjoying munching on your plants, so be vigilant and keep them down to manageable levels. Don’t forget to net brassicas to protect them from the pigeons and it is a good idea to protect carrots from carrot fly by covering with a fine mesh.

Offers in store throughout June To celebrate Bourne Carnival Come in and see!!

Not only will your crops benefit from the longer sunnier days, so will the weeds! Here are a few tips for keeping them at bay:

• Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry, as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove the 12/02/2015 remains17:35 so that they won’t re-grow. • Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or bark chips, to suppress weeds or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds. • Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower, you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.

June is probably one of the busiest months of the year for produce growers. There are a number of crops to harvest, such as early potatoes, strawberries, asparagus, garlic and over-wintered onions, to name but a few. Also numerous seedlings to plant out if you have been raising them in pots, but don’t forget to harden plants that have been under cover by leaving them outside during the day and at night too if there is no frost. Some suggested vegetables to plant out this month are; aubergines, chilli peppers, courgettes and summer squash, leeks, runner beans, sweet peppers, sprouting broccoli and sweet potatoes. And seeds for sowing include; Florence fennel, salad crops, beetroot. It’s your last chance for main-crop carrots, broccoli and a last chance to sow runner bean seeds.

| Consumer Advice By Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com

Romance Scams Dating- or romance-fraud occurs when an individual believes they’ve met their perfect partner online but they aren’t who they say they are. Once personal trust has been gained, they ask for money for a variety of emotive reasons. Both men and women are victims of this type of fraud, with the age group 40-65 appearing to be most affected.

Open Monday to Saturday from 9am - 5pm. For more information call

Fraudsters target the vulnerable, single, widowed and divorced, locating them using personal information uploaded on dating or social media sites. Contact is received from someone who shows an interest in pursuing a relationship. They may say they are working overseas (perhaps they are in the Armed Forces or working as an engineer/other professional). Gradually, a long-distance relationship is developed via e-mail, instant messaging, texting and phone calls. The love interest may send their photograph and start using a pet name. Once the fraudsters are confident they have an individual’s sympathy and desire, they will share a problem they are experiencing and ask for help in the form of sending money to them (this could be to a UK address or one overseas). They may say they are desperate to come and visit, but need money to pay for travel costs as they have a problem in the country where they are working or an issue with access to funds. Money grams are one of their preferred payment methods. The real truth is that this individual has been targeted by criminals, probably based overseas. The user profiles they have set up are fake and the pictures received are most likely to have simply been taken from other websites.

Where the warning signs of the above described situation appear, or it just doesn’t feel right – trust personal instinct. If a stranger makes an approach via social networking sites or chat rooms and then wants to continue the communication by e-mail or messenger – do not reply. Safeguard personal privacy through keeping personal bank account details completely confidential. Under no circumstances should money be sent, regardless of the nature of their problem. Helen O’Driscoll, Police Crime Reduction Officer, advises, “Nationally, this type of fraud is a huge problem and here in this region we are certainly seeing an increase in the number of victims. Many people are too embarrassed to report it to the police, but I would encourage anyone who suspects they have been a victim of this type of offence to come forward as soon as possible”. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Universal Fitness Centre (Read on, fellow dads, and see why we get showered with gifts!) Father’s Day is held on the third Sunday of June in the United Kingdom. It is a day to honour fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and fathersin-law. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day, some people see a link between the two.

Here at the Universal Fitness Centre, we’ve redesigned the successful ‘Eight Week Weight Management Course’ to bring you the ‘Eight Week Transformation’ package! Significant changes have been made including; a structured mentoring system and an improved, personalised guide for each individual. Everyone who started the previous course completed it and made outstanding progress. Below is a snippet from a testimonial we received from one happy client.

The idea of a special day to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honour fathers. Father’s Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father’s Day

‘For the first time ever I’ve really addressed my relationship with food. I’ve tried nearly every fad diet there is, with little success. I’ve lost weight and inches eating more than I ever have before. I’ve always been a bit scared and almost obsessive about calories but now I understand nutrition and enjoy the food I eat.

Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their children. The date when Father’s Day is celebrated varies from country to country. As with the U.K. it is celebrated in Canada and the United States on the third Sunday of June. It is also observed in countries such as Argentina, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Mexico, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, and Venezuela. In Australia and New Zealand, Father’s Day is on the first Sunday in September. Brazilian dads are honoured on the second Sunday of August.

Anyone that knows me will know that I’ve always had issues with my weight and it has affected my confidence massively. For the first time ever I believe in myself and I know that I will reach my end-goal. I know that without the help and support of the weight management programme I would still be looking for the “quick fix” answer to my weight problem.’

Father’s Day in India is a relatively new concept, but it is celebrated in similar ways as in the United Kingdom or the United States, although on a smaller scale. There is a greater awareness of Father’s Day events in metropolitan cities and bigger towns due to the greater exposure of people to the western cultures in these areas. In Mexico, Father’s Day is referred to as “Día del Padre”, where many families get together, prepare meals and distribute gifts to fathers or father figures. In South Africa, many social and cultural societies host Father’s Day celebrations to stress the important role of fathers in nurturing children and building a stronger society. 30

What is Acupuncture? - an insight from your local acupuncturist. Picture: Tina King, Acupuncturist at The Wellhead Practice

There are many misconceptions about acupuncture. At its heart, the treatments seek to correct disorders through the use of acupuncture meridian points at specific locations around the body. It is often a concern that the needles will hurt and, occasionally, there might be a small bruise but no acupuncturist wants to cause pain, so if it feels unpleasant, say so. A small adjustment will usually take care of it. Sometimes you might feel a tingle or a dull ache. This is a good indication and is called ‘Dei Qi’. The amount of sessions will depend on the type of disorder you have, whether it is acute or chronic and, to some extent, your age. It will also depend on how willing you are to make changes to your lifestyle and to use self-help techniques in between sessions. There are some 400 meridian acupuncture points that directly affect or influence our health, and govern the homeostasis (balance) of our body. The meridian points are closely correlated to nerve pathways and link with the connective tissues throughout the body. Very fine needles, magnets and moxibustion are used in a combination that is specifically tailored to you and your disorders; there is no ‘one size fits all’ prescription. The decision on which acupuncture points to use depends on a number of things. As an acupuncturist, I will take a full medical case history and discuss how you feel the disorder has progressed and how it impacts on your life. It is often important to examine your tongue and your pulses, listen to how you speak, and look at how you move and appear generally. When you come for acupuncture, you are not ‘done to’ - it is a very co-operative relationship, with your feedback being core to the choice of treatments.

You will normally see some improvement within a few sessions; early signs of improvement are better sleep, digestion and reduction in pain. We have a principle of treating both the symptoms and the root of ill-health. Long-term aims are always based on being realistic. For example, acupuncture cannot replace cartilage where it has worn away, but it can help reduce pain and increase circulation. People are often worn down and fed up with being ill when they seek treatment and they very often have extremely complex health issues, so sometimes it can take time to build you back up to good health. That said, once you’re there, you can always choose to use acupuncture as a way of helping to maintain your health. For further information, you can go to www.acupuncture.org.uk which is the website of the British Acupuncture Council, the principal regulatory body in the UK. If you would like to come and talk to me, you can book in for a short consultation, free of charge.

| Your health by Jo Sunner B.Sc. , D.O. , M.M.S.M., Osteopath. The

area’s longest established osteopath clinic (next to Bourne post office)

Osteoporosis – Act Early to Keep Your Bones Healthy Did you know that our bones are alive? It’s true! Every day, our body breaks down old bone and puts new bone in its place. It is normal to lose some bone as we age, but, if we do not take steps to keep our bones healthy, we can lose too much bone and get osteoporosis. For many people, unfortunately, a broken bone is the first sign, when they find out they have osteoporosis. So ideally, don’t wait until then! There are many “risk factors” that can increase your chances of getting osteoporosis.

Jo Sunner. Osteopath, Pulse Practice, Bourne. Also at Fitzwilliam Hospital, Peterborough

• B ody weight. Being too thin makes you more likely to get osteoporosis. So, if you are very thin, then try to exercise more, if you are able. • S moking. Smoking cigarettes can keep your body from using the calcium in your diet. Also, women who smoke go through the menopause earlier than those who don’t smoke. These things can increase your risk of osteoporosis. • Alcohol. People who drink a lot are more likely to get osteoporosis.

Risk factors which you can control: • Diet. Getting too little calcium can increase your chances of getting osteoporosis. Not getting enough vitamin D can also increase your risk. Vitamin D is important because it helps the body use the calcium in your diet. • Physical activity. Not exercising and not being active for long periods of time can increase your chances of getting osteoporosis. Like muscles, bones become stronger–and stay stronger–with regular exercise.

What can I do to make my bones healthier? It is never too early or too late to take care of your bones. The following can help you improve your bone health: • Eat a well-balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D. Good sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products, and foods and drinks with added calcium. Good sources of vitamin D include egg yolks, saltwater fish, liver, and milk with vitamin D. Fruits and vegetables also contribute other nutrients that are important for bone health.

Legal Jargon Made Clear

“Deed of Variation”

Deeds of Variation were thrown into the spotlight when Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osbourne, announced in the March Budget that they would be reviewed. A Deed of Variation is a document which enables beneficiaries to vary their entitlement under a deceased’s estate, whether the deceased died with a will or without one. There are many reasons why beneficiaries may wish to vary or redirect assets held in a deceased person’s estate. Some of the main reasons are: • to save Inheritance Tax; • to provide for someone who has been omitted from the will, or who has not been given adequate financial provision in the will;

Only the adult beneficiary under a will or an intestate estate has the authority to vary his own share of the estate. Varying the share of a child requires the consent of the court. A Deed of Variation must be made within two years of the date of death of the deceased and in writing by the original beneficiary. Even though using a Deed of Variation can be very useful, it should not be relied upon for estate planning. You should ensure that your will is regularly reviewed and kept up to date.

• to redirect the deceased’s share of a jointly owned asset which would otherwise pass to the surviving joint tenant; • to resolve any uncertainty or defect in the will.

One Year On and Going Strong This month sees the anniversary of husband and wife team, Sunny and Narinder Singh, arriving in the town with high hopes of establishing a thriving fish and chip shop on the Abbey Road site. They are now reflecting on a successful twelve months and extend their thanks to the people of Bourne. It is little wonder, really, to see why “Sunny’s Plaice” has proven so popular. For starters, the light and crispy batter, made to Sunny’s secret recipe, along with all the fish being cooked to order once the customer has entered the bright and airy premises, means that the product is of a high standard. Locally grown, quality potatoes and sustainable fish are used at all times. Secondly, the business has generated employment for eight local people, who have gelled into a strong team. Next, fresh new additions to the menu such as home-made battered fish cakes and battered Mars Bars, have been a big hit. Finally, the provision of some outside benches and tables, along with some parking bays, have created a much more welcoming and a safer facility for the people of Bourne to enjoy.

by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

Pensions, More Pensions As discussed in our last few articles there have been massive changes in pension legislation which came into effect in April this year. You will be pleased to know that I am not going to go through it all again! Over the last few weeks, I have been inundated with questions regarding the new ‘pensions world’ and what it means for people. The questions have been many and varied, and it’s been difficult to give an off the cuff response to most of the questions we’ve had. Because we’ve had so many enquiries on this topic, we’ve decided to offer a free guide to Pensions Freedoms. The booklet will give you lots of information and act as a reference guide, there are many “urban myths” around and most people underestimate

the tax burden that would be levied upon a complete withdrawal. Please complete the form below and return it to “Paul Ross, Landmark IFA Ltd, Glenross, Stainfield Rd, Kirkby Underwood, Bourne. PE10 0SG” and we will gladly send you out a copy. Alternatively email me on paul@landmarkgroup.org.uk with your address and phone number. It would also be useful if you let us have some idea of your existing pension.

Words from Bourne’s New Mayor, Philip Knowles First of all, may I pay tribute to my predecessor, Bob Russell, who retired from office on May 19th 2015, and express gratitude to him, as I prepare to embark upon my year of office? I genuinely regard it both an honour and a privilege to represent Bourne as your Mayor. It would be remiss of me if I did not pay a heartfelt tribute to five of my colleagues on the Town Council for the last five years, who have, for a variety of reasons, retired. Between them, they have amassed nearly one hundred years’ service to the Council, and that amounts to a huge depth of experience, upon which we can no longer call. They are the late John Smith, Shirley Cliffe, Trevor Holmes, Pet Moisey and David Higgs. The town of Bourne thanks you all for your hard work, diligence and service to the community.

My objectives are five-fold: 1. W herever the role takes me, I will seek to portray the parish of Bourne in a positive light, extolling its virtues, and to encourage visitors to flock here to experience them. 2. O n a personal note, I will seek to engage with as wide a range of people living or working in the town as is practicable. Whatever the background, (social, charitable, religious, academic, service provider), if I can be of any assistance, or whether you would just fancy to see what a Mayor looks like, please contact me and I will try to assist you. 3. I will be holding a number of fund-raising activities for the “Mayor’s Charities”, supporting one nationally, (Multiple Sclerosis) and two locally, (one for the young and one for the senior citizens). Details will follow in future issues. 4. A hobby horse of mine since I joined the Council has been to try to widen the engagement of the Town Council with those we are required to represent, the public of Bourne. I will renew my attempts to provide accessible mechanisms to achieve this objective. 5. Last but not least, I will try to promote and encourage a stronger feeling of care and respect for Bourne. I will expand on this theme in next month’s Discovering Bourne. 52

D I S C O V E R I N G

We are very fortunate to live in a small attractive town with some fine facilities and very low levels of crime. Of course, with an expanding population, there are elements of the infrastructure that could be improved and these, like a skateboard park or a better take-up on the retail opportunities, normally require effort from groups and authorities as well as individuals. However, I believe that every individual can help improve the environment and make Bourne a better, cleaner and more welcoming place in which to live. There are a huge number of caring citizens who, by their very nature, help others and act responsibly when it comes to litter, cigarette ends and, of course, the perennial issue of the disposal of dog mess. But, if we could encourage a greater percentage of our townsfolk to give more consideration to their neighbours (in the widest sense), we can collectively make Bourne a better community in which we can live together. We can but try!

If you wish to contribute to my thinking and planning, please e-mail philipknowles@sky.com or contact me through the Town Council office 01778 426123 ou.

| Technology Corner by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC PasswordBox takes the traditional Password Manager application to a new level. Not only does it allow you to complete and save a bank of passwords in encrypted format, but it provides a one click access to your most used websites. However, the reason I’m using it is to take advantage of the feature that provides password and login details to named relatives after your death. This is only provided after the generation of a valid death certificate but can help relatives avoid days of telephone calls and chasing for your account passwords. The application can be downloaded from https://www.passwordbox.com/ and it is available for all the main web browsers. In this example I will be using Chrome as the main browser but it works equally well in IE and Firefox. If using Chrome or Firefox click to accept the Add On otherwise download and install it. The application will now download and will be added to Chrome. You will then be prompted to create an account and a password and a MASTER PASSWORD

PasswordBox will automatically add the login details to its database in encrypted format

When it is running you will see the PasswordBox icon at the top right of your browser. From this point on, providing PasswordBox is turned ON it will store login details and passwords as you login to websites, building a one click menu of the sites you visit that require login. In the image shown I have visited a number of other websites and PasswordBox has started to create a menu of them. I can now choose to login in to the sites using the usual browser method or by clicking on PasswordBox and logging in with just one click of the site on the menu.

DO NOT LOSE THIS MASTER PASSWORD as it is the key to your encrypted data.

Although the one click feature is a ‘nice to have’, what makes PasswordBox stand out are the additional features that it provides. I have explored these features more fully in my online blog so please visit http://bit.ly/1zdgzYO for more details, including the section that covers the Legacy feature, the ability to provide relatives with the contents of the database in the event of your death.

Pets’ Corner |

LEPTOSPIROSIS THE FACTS Since the release of a new Leptospira L4 vaccine by one of the veterinary vaccine companies, there has been increasing discussion about using this vaccine as compared to the original L2 vaccine and discussions about the disease itself. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that primarily causes liver and kidney damage, although other organs and brain can also be affected .There are mainly two types of this disease. The first is spread from dog to dog and tends to cause kidney damage. The prevalence of this type of disease is hard to estimate, as the symptoms are often not severe and dogs generally recover, although, in some cases, this could result in chronic kidney disease. The other type of disease is spread mainly from rats and causes severe and acute liver damage and can also affect the kidneys (Weil’s Disease). Unless this disease is treated within the first twenty-four hours of showing symptoms, it is very hard to save these poor animals and most will die. To contract this disease requires close contact with rat urine. Generally the Leptospira in rat urine will only survive about ten minutes, although it can last several hours in a warm wet environment. This is the main reason that this disease has been quite rare. There are many strains of leptospirosis and until recently only two have been present in this country that have been included in the L2 vaccine. There is recent evidence that suggests that there are another three strains of leptospirosis now entering this country from Europe. Two of these three strains are in the new L4 vaccine. The whole situation is complicated in that there is a level of cross protection between the strains within both vaccines.

There has been an increase in reported cases of the rat-spread leptospirosis. The numbers seem to be quite small and in localised areas. It is very difficult to know which strain of leptospira has caused these cases and there is no information on how many of these dogs were vaccinated and how many were not, although some of them had been vaccinated. At present, our area is not seeing this increase. The new L4 vaccine does have an increased number of adverse reactions as compared to the L2 vaccination, but these are generally mild and animals recover quickly. However, some owners are reporting more severe reactions such as fits, autoimmune disease, collapse and even death. These reactions are low in number and are disputed by the vaccine company. It should be remembered that this disease is easily treated with a single dose of a penicillin type antibiotic. Total recovery without intensive care can occur if the treatment is given within twenty-four hours of initial symptoms. However, these symptoms are non-specific such as vomiting, diarrhoea, mild abdominal pain, slight temperature and depression. (Many dogs with simple gastroenteritis will show similar symptoms.) Later these cases will develop jaundice and at this point it is very hard to save them. In my experience, if I see a dog with vomiting and diarrhoea who seems more depressed than I would expect, I will give an antibiotic injection. These L4 vaccinations are now widely available. At present, there is only one manufacturer. There will be others soon and, due to an increased demand, there are some problems with supply. We offer a choice of both vaccines. The L4 vaccine is a little more expensive. Any dog presently on the L2 vaccine will need two injections of the L4 vaccine, four weeks apart.

For more information, please contact the surgery on 01778 422863.

| In the hot seat

Dick Salmon

1) Where were you born, and what is your fondest memory of your childhood?

B.R.M. Mechanic, Published Author

Fortunately, we can still hear from a number of former B.R.M. mechanics, living locally, just what life was like when Bourne was pitting its motor-racing skills against the likes of Ferrari, on the Formula One world stage, over fifty years ago. One such stalwart of those halcyon days is in this month’s “Hot Seat” - Bourne resident, Mr Dick Salmon, now into his nineties and showing no signs of slowing down! Dick attended Irnham School and The Boys Central in Grantham, before serving his motor mechanic’s apprenticeship under Bert Willson, at the Windmill Garage in Rippingale. In 1944, he was conscripted into the Royal Engineers and served in Southern Iraq until 1948. Having now caught the travel bug, Dick decided to join the B.R.M. Racing Team, giving him the chance to enjoy his chosen trade and to travel widely, around the world. “Despite the frustration of many failures, with both the V16 and P28 B.R.M.s, and being ridiculed by the press and the public, we had to be a bit thick-skinned when visiting the local hostelries,” Dick explains. “We persevered however”, he adds, “and the hard work and long hours were to culminate in being a member of the B.R.M. Formula One Racing Team to win the World Championship, with Graham Hill as driver, in the final race of the season in South Africa in 1962”. Upon leaving B.R.M, Dick went into partnership with a colleague, restoring historic cars, until retirement enabled him to spend more time playing bowls for Bourne Town Bowls Club. He also wrote a book which was successfully published, under the title, “B.R.M. - A Mechanic’s Tale”, and he was recently involved in the BBC2 television programme, “Graham Hill, Racing Legend”, with the actor Jeremy Irons, which was great fun for those veterans taking part, along with the millions of viewers. One of those former mechanics featured, and a long-standing friend of Dick’s, smiling as Jeremy Irons nursed one of the famous cars around Cadwell Park, was Pat Carvath, who sadly passed away earlier this year. 58

Bourne | June 2015

I was born at Irnham, near Grantham, where my parents ran the village general store and post office. My favourite memories are of the freedom of village life, climbing trees, fishing with a bent pin, and “scrumping” apples, with no fear of Health and Safety restrictions or “high-vis” jackets! Playing pranks and generally getting into mischief saw us being chased by an irate adult, more than once. 2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? It has to be my parents, who taught me to be good mannered; to respect others; that nothing is free in this world; to work for my living and to have a sense of humour. 3) Which two characters, (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? Cricket commentator, David Lloyd, with his droll sense of humour, who would most probably choose a curry, and then Daily Mail sketch writer, Quentin Letts, with his amazing choice of words, who could then describe the curry with a clever, amusing simile or two! 4) How would you describe yourself in just five words? “Run of the mill person”. 5) If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why? I would remove the steel fencing surrounding the Abbey Lawn. If people would only show the respect which this great amenity deserves, it would not be necessary. 6) What advice would you give to a 16 year old you? Good manners are worth a lot.

Langtoft Primary School (Ninth Best Primary School in Lincolnshire)

Langtoft Primary School is a thriving and popular school with a glowing reputation. Nestled in the village of Langtoft, near to Market Deeping on the A15, the school has seven classes, one for each year group. With a capacity of 210 children, the school enjoys a rural location and boasts an attractive site, complete with tyre park, trim trail, climbing wall, small woodland and a newlyinstalled gazebo. “There is always plenty to do at playtime,” says Headteacher, James McCullough. James has been Headteacher at Langtoft since September 2007 and recently celebrated his twentieth year with Lincolnshire County Council, having previously taught at Bourne Westfield. When asked to consider what makes his school so successful, Mr McCullough simply states: “We always strive for the best: whether it’s on the sports field or in the classroom; we encourage our pupils to do the best that they can.” It is that positive ‘can-do’ attitude that resulted in all 32 of its Year 6 pupils achieving the nationally expected Level 4 in Reading, Writing and Mathematics last year. “It wasn’t until a grandparent asked me if I’d seen the Daily Telegraph that day that I realised that we had been ranked as the ninth best primary school in Lincolnshire!” James added.

The children of Langtoft Primary School also enjoy success on the sports field. “We compete in as many competitions as possible to give the children every opportunity to enjoy sport and to experience winning and losing.” Indeed the school’s motto is Learning for Life. “The purpose of any primary school is to give children the best possible start in life so that they can go on to achieve their potential at secondary school. At Langtoft we value hard work, good manners and a caring and co-operative attitude – in all that you do!”

With a curriculum designed to bring learning alive, the children really do enjoy coming to school. (The school’s attendance figures place it in the top 20% in the country.) “We aim to make learning purposeful and interesting for our pupils. They deserve at least one magic moment a day!” concluded the magical Mr McCullough. June 2015 | D I S C O V E R I N G

Thorpe Hall Hospice The countdown is on to the completion of the brand new Thorpe Hall Hospice building. The contractors are now putting the finishing touches to the singlestorey building which represents the future of palliative care for the region. The sedum roof is turning green as the low-growing plants shoot in the spring sunshine; the gardens are being landscaped and the rooms are being decorated. The completion of the new 20 bed inpatient unit is the final phase in a £6 million project to provide the region with a state-of-the-art hospice able to provide incredible care for generations to come. A series of open days will be held in June giving everyone who has supported the hospice the opportunity to see what they have helped create.

The Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal is running until the end of June and the Appeal total hasn’t been reached yet. There is now £4.02 million in the bank and the fundraising team are busy with a final push for funds.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

You’re Never Too Old to Learn to Drive It’s been a roller-coaster of a month and I’m not just referring to the elections! Big congratulations do go out to the successful candidates in local and national elections representing Bourne, and let’s not forget those that were not successful on this occasion, but have been very active working in and around our parish. I don’t, as a rule, get emotional about driving test passes, as my attention is more on preparing my pupils for driving on our roads post-test, but a recent pass did indeed make me very proud. I had a retired teacher of English contact me about learning to drive; he recognised that he was late coming to ‘learning to drive’, but he wanted to relieve his wife of the burden of constantly driving on long journeys which they make across the UK. However, whilst he recognised the benefit this mobility provides, he does not “like” driving. He said on a few occasions that had it not been for our friendly conversations in the car, he would not have continued with driving lessons. Despite this, he has just passed his driving test at Peterborough on his first attempt and, at the age of 64, can now begin to assist with driving on their long journeys. You can see him on my blog on www. BIGTOM.org.uk with an enormous ‘chuffed’ smile on his face…. these are the moments to remember. I’ve had some magical experiences in the last seven years of being a driving instructor, where I have taught pupils with particular needs, for example deafness, severe anxiety, and learning difficulties such as dyspraxia and Asperger’s

Syndrome. I am amazed at how people will persevere to overcome their fears and obstacles to learning. I see one of my biggest roles is to provide them with a learning environment where they feel safe and comfortable and in which they can recognise that progress is being made. On the subject of road safety, I was stopped in the street whilst walking my dog the other day by a Bourne resident with a motoring issue he wanted to share with me. His concerns do indeed affect road safety in Bourne and involve the parked car(s) on the verge of the A15 which block a driver’s view to the left, when wanting to emerge out of Beaufort Drive. It is indeed a common event that I see daily around Bourne. Off-road parking not only potentially restricts pedestrians but when near junctions, it causes a massive headache for other road users, and presents an unnecessary danger. It reminds me of a saying thought to be from Gandhi : “If you want to bring about a change in the world, you should be the change you want to see” - kind of appropriate to all the candidates in the recent elections too! As ever, if you have any comments/opinions regarding this article, feel free to e-mail me on info@BIGTOM.org.uk

| Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Distraction Burglaries I have previously talked about home security, and how you can make your home more secure to prevent burglaries when you are not there. However, distraction burglaries occur when you are at home, and occur when someone cons their way into your home on the pretence of doing some urgent work and steals your money or valuables. Of the average 14,000 distraction burglaries reported every year, the most common victim tends to be an elderly, lone female. The actual figure is likely to be much higher, as this type of crime is very much under-reported. There may be several reasons for this, but the most likely reason is embarrassment. People are naturally proud, and to admit you were deceived and allowed a criminal into your home can be acutely embarrassing and distressing. What I want to say is do not be embarrassed, because the distraction burglar can be pushy and persuasive, and is skilled in deceiving their victim. Offenders will pretend to be on official business from respectable concerns such as utility companies - gas, electricity and water - or the council. They may claim to be tradesmen or workmen calling to carry out urgent repairs. Distraction burglars usually work in teams and move from area to area. One team member will distract the resident’s attention while another will gain entry to the property and steal any cash or valuables they find. There are several simple steps you can take to protect yourself from such a crime. One scheme is to Nominate a Neighbour which has one simple aim - to help the older and more vulnerable within our communities feel safer in dealing with unwanted or unexpected people. Ask a neighbour who you trust to come and deal with the person on your doorstep and act on your behalf. So that customers can confirm that their employees are genuine, utility companies have set up the Priority Service Register and Password Scheme. You can find out more about this service by calling your utility provider.

If someone does come to your door unexpectedly, follow these steps: • If you’re not sure who is at your door, don’t open it. • Ask for their identity card and check it carefully. Keep your utilities services phone numbers handy so you can easily call and check an official’s identity. Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller, as they may be bogus. • ‘Water Boards’ no longer exist; it is an obsolete phrase used only by bogus callers. • Don’t keep large quantities of cash at home; put it in the bank where it is safe. • Keep doors locked and windows secure at all times. • Ensure that, if you do let somebody in to your home, you close the door behind them – distraction burglars often work in teams, where one will distract you whilst others sneak in through the insecure door. • If somebody asks for your help (needs to make a telephone call, lost a ball in your garden, needs a drink or pen and paper) call a friend or neighbour to come and help or assist them through a closed door. • If you suspect a bogus caller is at your door, call 999 immediately. A very useful website covering a variety home security tips is http://www.securedhome.co.uk/ To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Crimestoppers 0800 555 111
