Welcome to our September edition... Summer is still hanging around, but only just, and I hope your break has proved as refreshing and energising as our lovely trip to beautiful Devon. September signals the return to school for many and the shortening of days for all. Blackberries and sloes are ripening and some shops are already stocking their “must-haves” for Christmas, over three months away! Our team of contributors have all returned from their various summer destinations, all ready, willing and A remarkable “roller-coaster” of a month has seen A Level and GCSE results make some people euphoric, while others have had to re-structure their plans for the future, as grades didn’t quite match expectations. On a personal note, the loss of my father at the age of ninety-six, put a cloud over things but, at the same time, released much wonderful sentiment from many people about his exploits, whilst having tended their animals for over four decades. (Next month’s issue will carry some anecdotes gleaned recently, regarding “Bob the Vet”.) The month-long Ecuador expedition, involving twenty students from Bourne Academy and Bourne

For us mums (and dads) with our “not-so-little-uns” now having received their GCSE envelopes, we can step back and see just what fantastic human beings they actually are, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. They have done their very best, taken the advice offered by their teachers and us, formulated future plans, and are developing into responsible adults. Phew!

Grammar School returned, with a lifetime of stories to hear, some of which will be featured in the coming months. As for the present, our contributors continue to offer such a wide range of useful information, whether it’s tackling pain, planning a trip to the idyllic Seychelles, considering pre-nuptial arrangements or being on our guard against burglars or unscrupulous scammers. The “Buffs” are our club under the spotlight this month, Sassi’s celebrates two years of having served up delicious Thai dishes, whilst a Hanthorpe housewife, Janie McCormick, tells us why being a volunteer is such a rewarding experience. The University Student Survival Guide 1

Students are exempt from paying council tax; however, you must fill in a form online, or ring your local council tax office to become exempt for each tax year – don’t be surprised if you’re summoned to a court hearing if you do not do this.

2 Break the ice in fresher’s week by bringing cocktail making equipment and drinking games (e.g. Twister or a pack of cards). If you don’t drink, why not bake a cake for your new neighbours to enjoy, or go out for a meal together?

3 When you’re searching for private accommodation look beyond the furnishings. Walk into the rooms and look around all the walls, the ceilings and fixtures. Look for signs of mould, and for double-glazed windows (to keep your house warmer and mould free).

Ask the current tenants what they think of their landlords, and if they have had any problems.

Also ask previous tenants why they are moving out of the property. If they are third years, ask if they would stay in the property if they had the choice.

9 Take photos of your property and evaluate the quality of the inventories when you move in, which will stop you from being charged for any damage caused by previous tenants.

11 Exchange numbers with your new housemates in case you lose them!

12 Take: a doorstop (triangular ones are best).

13 Get a spare room key cut, and hide it somewhere safe!

14 Treat yourself if your workload is increasing, and find somewhere to rejuvenate when you’re feeling stressed, or participate in a sport.

The “Wright Stuff” for Bourne’s Youth! As a father, with three very active sons, all of whom have either been, or are still going through those wonderful “scooter/BMX/skateboard years”, it was with no small degree of interest that I recently checked out Bourne’s latest and brightest offering – Session 365. Since opening on August 1st, we are now lucky to have in the centre of Bourne, a large, airy treasure-trove of all things technical, related to the above, as well as rails of skating and biking apparel. Enthusiastic father and son team, owner Rolando and Harri Wright, are well aware of the need felt by the youth of Bourne to not only have their own skatepark, but also an outlet such as this, in Wherry’s

Lane, just off North Street. Rolando’s wide and varied background includes time spent covering the first BMX events in Britain for “Sport for Television”, whilst Harri can ally ten years of skateboarding, scootering and BMXing alongside his considerable experiences as a talented musician.

Bourne needs an impressive outlet like this – now let’s hope the skatepark will soon follow!

Dyke Scarecrow Festival – Bigg After last year’s very successful inaugural Scarecrow Festival, the good folk of Dyke will be knitting, sewing, stuffing and tweaking their way to an even more impressive display over the weekend of September 12th and 13th. Organised by the Village Hall Committee, there will be more than the forty-four scarecrows of last year, located throughout this popular village, just north of Bourne.

All Roads Lead to Haconby! The Haconby Village “Open Gardens Festival” will take place over the week-end of September 12th and 13th. Having developed, from the original community event / fund-raising idea, by Church Warden Bill Reid in 2001, this year there will be a

There will be exhibitions and stalls on the Saturday, from 11am to 4pm, including an art exhibition, classic cars and motorbikes, motorised boats and, hopefully, a tractor exhibition, birds of prey and many more. This year, the public will be asked to vote for their best scarecrow, and prizes will be up for grabs. This will be in the Village Hall, which will also be open for refreshments and maps. Groups from outside of the village (e.g. schools and clubs) are welcome to create and display scarecrows outside the Village Hall, whilst the local charity, Sense, has confirmed that they will be taking part and will also have a stall.

Photography Competition, (for the Ringstone and Aveland group of villages), alongside the wonderful range of craft stalls in St Andrew’s Church. These will cater for all tastes, in this very old and beautiful building, parts of which date from the 12th Century. Several very talented and enthusiastic gardeners will be opening their pride and joy to the public over the week-end, a little later than in the past, to provide ideas on how to prolong the summer colours,

and also to plan ahead, offering spring bulbs and plants for sale. A mere £4 will enable entry into all of the gardens, (no dogs please), and all proceeds will go to St Andrew’s Church. The week-end begins with a social event on Friday September 11th, from 7pm to 9pm, in the church, where light refreshments will be available, whilst the photography entries and craft stalls can be viewed. September 1980 witnessed huge international events, including the re-unification of East and West Germany, whilst a certain Saddam Hussein was making his intentions very clear in Iraq. Life in Bourne went on, but was enriched considerably when a new Salvation Army branch started its ministry in premises on Abbey Road. To mark this arrival, a celebration tea and a special service will be held over the week-end of September 26th and 27th , at its premises on Manning Road. On the national stage, the Salvation Army celebrates 150 years of ministry and mission and, as part of their wider celebrations, there will be a “Birthday Tea” on Tuesday September 22nd, between 3pm and 5pm. Resembling the format of the highly successful, and enormously worthwhile, Macmillan Coffee Mornings, this event will see its proceeds supporting an overseas project within the Salvation Army.

How are you tackling dementia? Sign up for Peterborough’s Memory Walk Around 225,000 people develop dementia every year – that’s the equivalent to one person every three minutes! The effects are more than just losing your keys. As Alzheimer’s Disease progresses, patients suffer severe problems with memory loss, communication, reasoning and orientation. This can lead sufferers to develop “out of character” behavior, such as agitation and aggression. In the latter stages, there can also be difficulty walking and eating unaided. There is a temptation to think ‘it will never happen to me’. However, one in six people over the age of eighty are victims, making it increasingly likely that either you or a loved one will be affected.

Words from the Mayor My theme of “Pride in our town and respect for the community of Bourne” continues this month, with a few words about driving. Once again, my belief is that the majority of motorists drive with due care and consideration for pedestrians and fellow road users, but we have a minority of dissidents, who believe that they own the road. One only has to negotiate Meadowgate to see drivers leaving the town centre, tuck in where appropriate, to allow a steady flow travelling towards the Corn Exchange. Very few drivers fail to understand the sense of this convention. The Town Council recently commissioned an Archer survey, which measured speeds on all the approach roads to Bourne, near to the edge of town, and also on the by-pass. At first sight, with the best part of half of motorists exceeding the speed limit, the results can be considered alarming. However, most of those were marginally above the limit, and closer inspection reveals a very small percentage driving at a speed that could be regarded as reckless.

The Town Council proposes to purchase the signs which indicate speed with fixtures that will allow them to be displayed in several different locations, to remind motorists of their speed and of their responsibility. I do not claim to be an expert in the field (nor a motoring saint!) but I would urge drivers to drive in the town with patience, care and courtesy. This is with particular regard to learners and more elderly drivers, whose manoeuvring ability just might be more tentative, but who nevertheless deserve our forbearance. The schools will soon re-open, and it is vital that we all reduce our speed as we approach them and proceed with the caution that will help keep our youngsters safe on the road. Please drive with care, courtesy and with awareness of things ahead of you, and acknowledge good manners when you are the recipient, so that we can keep our pedestrians and road users safe, as the winter approaches.

By the time you read this, I will have undertaken a Charity Swim at the Bourne Outdoor Pool, a short one as befits someone who is virtually a non-swimmer! I originally asked friends and family for £1 a piece, if I survived, and £2 if I did not. Due to people’s generosity, the amount raised looks like being in the hundreds, rather than in the tens and my thanks are due to all who have been so supportive. In September, I will be launching a “Multi-pubgames Competition”, to continue over six dates throughout the winter. Pubs competing will include The Red, The Masons, Smiths, The Jubilee, The Wishing Well and the Anchor. There will be a whist drive, a family beetle drive and a couple of quiz evenings, in due course. The dates and venues will be announced in “Discovering Bourne” and the “Bourne Local”. Please make an effort to come and enjoy some of these events. Deepings Camera Club Established in 1985, DCC prides itself on being a friendly club, welcoming all levels and ages of photographers. Membership stands at around eighty, with a wide range of knowledge and experience, which members are more than willing to share. The club meets at 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings at Deepings Community Centre, with a good programme of events, details of which are posted on the club website www.deepingscameraclub.org On the first Monday of the month, a more practical evening for a smaller group of members is held, where subjects include learning how to prepare work for competitions, how to use the club forum and how to deal with Photoshop techniques. A number of recent accolades have come the way of the club, both on a local and a regional stage. DCC recently came first in the Pat Goode Memorial Trophy and second in the Brotherhoods PDI (Projected Digital Image) competition. Further afield, they won the Chesterfield Trophy and came second in the North and East Midlands Federation Championship.

Many members had their work selected for these competitions, some of whom are well established with the club and already have awards. Others, however, were beginners just a few years ago and have developed their skills and expertise by entering the Club’s internal competitions and using feedback from judges and other club members to improve. Club lectures also provide the opportunity to gain new ideas and techniques for experimentation. Interested? Pork, apple and leek hotpot With the apple season nearly upon us, this easy hotpot recipe will go down lovely with the family this autumn.

Method

Serves 4:

1. Fry apple and onion until golden.

Food |

Ingredients:

450g diced pork

1 large cooking applepeeled, cored and diced

225g potatoes-peeled and thinly sliced

1 large onion- finely chopped

Sage Seasoning

2 leeks- washed and roughly chopped

50g melted butter

2. In a greased casserole dish: place leeks in the bottom, add the pork, cover with apple and onion mixture. Then layer the sliced potatoes evenly on top.

150g mature cheddar-grated

3. Sprinkle with a pinch of sage and season to taste. 4. Pour in enough water to come halfway up the dish. 5. Brush the potatoes with melted butter. 6. Cover and bake for 45 minutes at 180C, remove lid after 30 minutes and top with grated cheddar. Return to the oven without the lid and bake for the remaining 15 minutes.

Sassi’s

Two Years in the Town September 9th is the second anniversary of the opening in South Street, Bourne, of Sassi’s Thai Restaurant. The idea, originally conceived by owner Alan Collins and his Thai partner, Morn, and her family, was for a noodle bar and take-away facility, alongside a patisserie offering cakes, coffee and breakfasts. Initially, there were a handful of tried and tested Thai dishes available, and there soon developed a regular clientele, so pleased to be offered something that little bit different. There could be no doubting that here was a very fashionable, internationallyacclaimed style of cooking, including on the menu, massaman curry, regarded as one of the ten finest dishes on the planet. Bourne was now on the culinary map, as word spread near and far. As with any successful business though, there needs to be a natural evolution of ideas, a freshening up of things and this followed, with a re-appraisal of the direction in which Sassi’s was to be heading. Out went the patisserie and breakfast elements, in came a considerable refurbishment of the premises and the emphasis shifted to it now being more of a restaurant, complete with a full licence to sell a range of wines, beers and spirits to accompany the meals. However, there continues to be the take-away facility

and home-delivery service. A recent revision of the menu has now extended the choice of food even further, and Alan is confident that his long-term plan is getting a little nearer to fruition. Yes, Alan is aware that the atmosphere to be found in the rather large, open-plan eating area could be more attractive at times, but he is pragmatic in his views about his restaurant. The 2015 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, for Sassi’s having achieved consistently high standards in food quality and service, bears out Alan’s view that his hard-working team is doing things very well indeed. That team comprises Morn, her daughter, (the eponymous Sassi), three other family members, (all long-term residents of Bourne), general factotum Mike Rock, and frontof-house, week-end waitress Charlotte.

1) Where were you born, and what is your fondest memory of your childhood?

Luton and Dunstable Hospital in Bedfordshire, twenty minutes ahead of my twin sister! We used to go with my father clay pigeon shooting and, whilst the shooting was going on, we’d play in the woods, unaware of how dangerous it was, until being reprimanded by the grown-ups. The prospect of my mum’s home-made gingerbread made it worth coming out of the woods for, as the risk of being shot just didn’t seem to us an issue!

2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? My children, Alex, who is now nineteen, and his sixteen year old brother, Ben. Being a parent is a challenging and rewarding role and makes you realise what a profound and lasting effect your words and actions can have. I often wonder if teachers realise the impact they have, as I can still remember a couple of teachers from my primary school. Their kindness, understanding and support lasts a life-time.

Fundraisers fulfil such an important role in society today, whether in raising awareness of a particular charity or organisation, or in securing large sums of cash, so that genuine progress can be achieved. This month’s “Hot Seat” is occupied by a very busy Hanthorpe resident of fourteen years, wife and mother of two teenage boys, Janie McCormick. For three years, she has worked as the Community Event Fundraiser for St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice. Her role within the hospice is to help raise the vital funds needed to continue to provide the services that the hospice offers, free of charge, to local people and their families, who are living with a life-limiting illness. As well as raising funds through various events, raising awareness of the services is also very much a priority. Janie considers, “Fundraising is hugely rewarding. The feedback and comments you receive, following a successful event, are heart-warming, and it’s humbling to know that your work is helping people through difficult times”. She has been involved with all sort of events, from leg waxing the local vicar to a very local Strictly Come Dancing competition! Outside of work, she loves getting out and about, visiting London for the day, or popping over to the seaside for a brisk walk and fish and chips! Although she enjoys cooking, Masterchef is still a distant dream, as her recipes never end up looking quite like the picture!

3) Which two characters, (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? One would be the late, controversial Michael Jackson. I grew up with his music and can’t help but wonder what he was really like as a person. The other would definitely have to be the incredibly handsome actor Johnny Depp - do I really need to say why?

4) How would you describe yourself in just five words? Outgoing, positive, laid-back, conscientious, and fun loving. Hopefully my family would agree, although I’m sure they could add to the list!

5) If there was one thing which you could change about the Deepings, what would it be and why? The first thing I noticed when we moved to Lincolnshire from Bedfordshire was just how friendly everybody was. I think Bourne’s a great little town and am often surprised at how much you can actually get from our local shops. If I could change the town in any way it would be to add a cinema! Wouldn’t that be great, with the town rapidly increasing in size? Perhaps we could invite Johnny Depp along to do the official opening, (but only after we’d dined together first, of course!)

6) What advice would you give to a 16 year old you? Just be yourself! Simple, yet effective, this advice was given to me in my early twenties by my, then, boss. Back then, I worked in a very competitive industry with people far more experienced than myself, and his advice helped me to understand that we all have different, valuable strengths.

We all feel pain from time to time. When someone injures themselves, specific nerves recognise this as pain, which in turn triggers the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s repair mechanism. As the problem resolves, the pain tends to improve and usually disappears within three to six months. It could be argued that this type of pain is beneficial: If it hurts, you are likely to try and avoid doing whatever it is that has caused the pain in the future, so you are less likely to injure yourself in that way again. Occasionally, the pain continues, even after tissue healing has finished. When pain continues after this point, it becomes known as persistent (or is sometimes referred to as chronic) pain. This type of pain is not beneficial and is a result of the nerves becoming oversensitised, which means that a painful response will be triggered much more easily than normal. This can be unpleasant, but doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily mean that you are doing yourself any harm simply by moving. Persistent pain is very common and affects over fourteen million people in the UK alone. It often does not respond to conventional medical interventions and needs a different kind of approach, but there are many things that you can do to manage your pain yourself with the support of your osteopath, your family and lovedones. How to Relieve Back Pain Without Drugs Occasional back pain is common. Not all types of back pain can, or should, be treated without medications, and here at Pulse Practice we can provide you with appropriate advice as to what you should do. There are several things you can do to strengthen your back and relieve back pain without the use of drugs.

Apply heat. Heat is commonly recommended for alleviating back pain, as it will help your muscles relax, which can relieve tension and spasms. If your pain is chronic, or not the result of injury, heat is more likely to help.

Strengthening your core muscles will help improve your posture. These muscles connect to your spine and pelvis and help hold your body up.

Use a hot water bottle or heating pad to apply dry heat. Wrap a hot water bottle in a towel to avoid burns. Do not fall asleep while using a heating pad. Do not use heat applications for more than 15-20 minutes at a time.

Pay attention to how you sit and stand throughout the day. Your shoulders should be down and back, not slumped forward. Your head should be at a level position, not bent forward or down. It may feel a little awkward to correct your posture at first, but with a little vigilance, you may begin to feel better.

A hot shower or bath may also provide relief for some back pain. You may also find a sauna or hot tub helpful.

Use a cold pack. Icing or using a cold pack is not always helpful for back pain. It is usually more helpful when inflammation is involved, such as with arthritis-related back pain. Icing can also reduce swelling from injuries. A bag of frozen peas or sweetcorn can act as a cold pack, at a pinch. (Wrap the bag in a tea towel, otherwise it could feel unpleasant at first!!).

Improve your posture. Slouching and standing improperly can increase the pressure on your back and cause pain. Improving your posture can relieve back pressure. It can also help prevent recurrence of back pain.

Change your mattress. If other self-care tactics haven’t worked, your mattress could be contributing to your back pain, if it is sagging and unsupportive. There is no one type of mattress that is “best” for people who suffer from back pain. A lot depends on your preferred sleeping position. You can use pillows and cushions to improve your sleeping position. If you sleep on your back, put a pillow beneath your knees to offer support. If you sleep on your side, put a pillow between your knees to maintain a neutral spine position. Try to avoid sleeping on your stomach. It can twist and put tension on back muscles and neck. July 2015 was Scam Awareness Month Scam Awareness Month ran throughout July 2015, with the intention of assuring consumers are informed and are ready to talk about their own experiences to help prevent others. Sporting the headline “Don’t be rushed, Don’t be hushed”, the campaign is supported nationally by Trading Standards and other organisations. Each year millions of people in the UK are victims of scammers. Estimates put the figure lost to scammers by as much as £5billion. The truth is – with reporting levels as low as 5% for some types of scams – the real impact cannot be quantified. Scams are crimes that affect many different groups of people with distressing, and sometimes disastrous consequences. Many go unreported either because the consumer does not spot something amiss or because people who become victims of scams feel a sense of shame. To understand and prevent such crimes, it is essential that consumers get the information they need to spot scams in the first place; report them when they are targeted and get the advice they need to help protect them in future.

September is a good month for contemplation: what grew well this year, what didn’t and what do I want to plant next year? I keep a log of what, when and where I planted and how well it cropped … and cauliflowers will not be on next year’s list of crops to plant –they started off well but then - disaster! Early crops are coming to an end but there are still autumn fruits, late potatoes, maybe beans, courgettes and tomatoes and maybe some early leeks, or even Brussels sprouts, that might be ready for picking. As far as sowing seeds and planting out goes, there’s not much that can be done: you can still sow rocket and other salad leaves, and now is the time to plant overwintering onions, (they will be ready for lifting in June next year), and cabbages. New strawberry plants can be planted: either bought ones or those that have been propagated from runners. Earthing up, or staking Brussels sprouts or other brassicas, is a good idea, as they become top-heavy, and cut down asparagus foliage to within one inch above the ground. If you haven’t already got a composter, now would be a good time to make or buy one, as there is plenty of dead or dying material available from your plot. If you have one, add any material that isn’t diseased, turn it, water if it is dry and cover to keep warm. Don’t forget to add “brown” materials such as: autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, egg shells and sweetcorn husks, to name but a few. The proportion of “greens” to “browns” should be 50/50, and no dairy products, meat, fish or non-degradable materials. A tip that I gleaned recently is to put all of the waste from your rhubarb into a bin, leave it to rot down until next year, and then use it when watering your runner beans. Something I am going to try this year, on a section of my plot, is sowing “green” manure, possibly rye grass, which will overwinter and then, in the spring, I can dig it into the ground. Weeds are a big problem on my plot, so let’s see if this works and suppresses their growth.

What appears to be topical at the moment is the amount of scams relating to pensions. Now you are allowed to take all of your money out of your pension, many of the “scamsters” have seen this as an opportunity to trick you, so retirees need to be vigilant and avoid being conned out of their savings by smooth-talking tricksters. I would urge you to be warned to ignore offers of a free pension review from cold callers. No reputable organisation would ever do such a thing, and the chances are these people are simply laying the ground work to steal your money. Please also be cautioned against weird and wonderful investments offered by scammers, including ‘shady operations peddling carparking spaces in Dubai’. My message to people is simple: pensions are precious, so don’t fall for conmen who want to snatch your money. Please also note that it is not possible to move pension prior to the age of 55, because if the funds were accessed before the age of 55, savers would face a further 55% tax charge. The advice is simple - take independent financial advice on this area and the initial meeting is usually at no cost. Remember… pensions are usually your second biggest asset, after your house.

How many people in Bourne and the surrounding villages are aware that, in our very own small market town, we have not only the vicecaptain of the England Ladies’ team, but also the winner of two golds, a silver and two bronze medal from the recent three-day World Championship event in her sport? The sport? – Taekwon-Do. The star? – Sam Berridge. Dexter & Sharpe Chartered Certified Accountants are proud to have Sam as one of their team of accountants, with 6 offices across Lincolnshire Sam is based at their Bourne West Street office. She, meanwhile, is quick to acknowledge the support that her employers have given her, as she has strived to reach the very top in this most energetic of martial arts. Sam, who has been involved in the sport since 1996, has previously competed at the 44

World Championships in 2013, where she won silver in the “Ladies Heavyweight Black Belt Sparring” category, and bronze in the “Power Breaking”. She also won team bronze medals for “Patterns”, “Sparring” and “Power Breaking”. Before heading off to the World Championships in London, Sam commented, “It’s hard, as I am now eleven years older than some of my competitors, but I’m hoping the experience I have will get me through. I have been training hard - it’s an honour to be selected to represent GTUK England Ladies and I am lucky to have such support from my employer”. She knew it was going to be a very stiff challenge to secure that elusive gold medal and world title, but she came out on top, winning the gold in the “Individual Sparring” category, along with team gold in “Special Technique”, team silver in “Patterns”, and team bronze in “Sparring and Power”.

Remove Infections - with MalwareBytes Malware Bytes is NOT an antivirus solution. It is however one of the best tools for removing malware from your system including viruses, adware, PuPs (potentially unwanted programs) and trojans. As an IT engineer it is one of the main tools in my arsenal for combating system infections and I run it every quarter on my own system to hunt down anything that may have crept through my security software (Kaspersky). The first thing to do is to download MalwareBytes from a safe source. I use the download service at CNET.com. Do a browser search for ‘cnet malwarebytes’ and you’ll find it. This is important as, as with other popular free applications, criminals and hackers target such apps and frequently load false download locations. By using CNET (or similar) you know that you are getting the correct code, virus and malware free. When installing accept the license and the default directories and finally ensure that you remove the tick from the trial of the full version (which is not free). Finally click Finish. MalwareBytes will now finish installing and will open at the main scan page. You will probably see that the first thing that happens is that the tool uses the internet to update its database with the latest information indicated by the blue bar next to Database Version. This is important as this is where MalwareBytes keeps all the relevant information about the latest malware so let it finish before continuing. Once done click on the SCAN button. its database clearly identifying the stage it is working on by green progress markers. Note that if you have a lot of disk space and data then this may take some time. When complete a results window will be displayed listing all of the malware found during the scan. Select the items you want to remove (if they are not already selected) and click on Remove Selected. MalwareBytes will now attempt to remove the infections and will report status when complete. That’s it you’re done! A note on PuPs: As the name suggests these are POTENTIALLY unwanted programs.

Malwarebytes will flag these up but check the information for a PuP as it may be a program that you want to keep. Most of the time it won’t be but it is worth checking.

You have a new camera. All the dials, buttons and numbers probably look a little bewildering to you. You think your only option is to use your camera on Auto, or try various settings... with mixed results. Some photos will be good, others a tad disappointing – perhaps that portrait looks no better than one taken on your smart phone, or that of your dog running towards you is out of focus. Using a digital camera on Auto means the camera is taking the picture not you. It’s your camera, your picture so your decisions that creates your picture.Your camera has a superb lens and sensor (where the picture is formed) and is superior to any smart phone. Bourne Preservation Society by Anthony Jennings (Part 3)

In my last two articles about Bourne Preservation Society (BPS), I said I would update you about the Town Hall in Bourne Market Place. It was built in 1821 and designed by Bryan Browning, the architect of the House of Correction in Folkingham. He was the father of Edward Browning, also an architect, who designed Bourne’s Chapel of Rest, the building that gave birth to Bourne Preservation Society in 2008 when the town council wanted to knock it down. Browning’s Town Hall superseded an earlier one, which had been the court of the Manor of Bourne and received tolls from the market and the stalls or ‘shambles’ under it. Browning’s new Town Hall also had a shambles for a number of years, and is described by James Stevens Curl in his book Georgian Architecture as ‘one of the most remarkable buildings of the courthouse type...in the British Isles’. We at BPS have been worried about its fate since council services were moved out, with visions of dereliction or unsuitable use. Fortunately, though, historically much of its cost was paid for by public subscription, and not from council funds, and this implies a trust, as I explained in one of my articles in the Local. And sure enough, a Trust Deed of 1821 was unearthed last year. Sure enough again, it restricts the use of the Town Hall entirely to public service, financed by market stalls. So the council has realised it can’t just sell it off for commercial purposes, and has now set up a committee to look into its future in the light of the trust, and to consult the public and our amenity groups, like BPS and Bourne Civic Society, before any decision is taken. So we await developments.

But the projects I’ve mentioned in these three articles are only part of what BPS does. We’ve been working with South Kesteven District Council to enhance the Bourne Conservation Area, which covers most of the centre of town and all three main streets, and has recently been extended. In 2012 we produced our Conservation Area Guide, which was distributed by SKDC to all households and businesses in the area, and is freely available on the SKDC website. We’ve also recently arranged with SKDC for them to notify us of planning applications on a weekly basis, and this is working well. It enables us to comment on applications where appropriate, not just in the conservation area, when we have concerns about poor quality or excessive development. This is a time for special vigilance, when we have seen our pleasant market town subjected to gross overdevelopment to help meet national problems of overpopulation.

Our monthly public meetings are held on the third Monday of each month, and these have introduced members and non-members alike to a wide variety of topics. Is this Animal Welfare? This week, I read an article in one of my professional magazines entitled, “Animal welfare-focused practice”. I was expecting this to be both interesting and uplifting, but was soon quite horrified by what I had read.

Under a paragraph headed “Realism”, the author states that a welfare-focused practice does not afford animals any rigid absolute right to life. He states that the reality of the situation has to be measured against the owner’s situation and resources available.

and that owners continue to present animals for treatment in the expectation of a professional service. Sometimes, this will mean that welfare-focused practice is not doing whatever is in the interests of the particular animal in front of us”.

Further in the paragraph, he states that welfarefocused practice does not mean ignoring owners, and that the practice needs to discuss the owner’s expectations, resources, constraints and plans, (that word “resources” again!) He then states that the owner’s thoughts should be factored into the decision-making, but that we should not pander to the owners completely!

What all this is suggesting is that it is ok to euthanise an animal if the owners cannot afford to pay, because if you do not, the practice would fail. The truth is most clients can pay their bills, but some just need time to pay in instalments. Bills can be reduced to help the small number of clients that are in real difficulties and, as a last resort, where an owner is adamant that nothing can be paid, then the animal can be signed over to the vet, treated and re-homed. All this can be done without a practice failing, (my practice is proof of this).

In my opinion, there are only two situations where an animal does not have a right to life, and that is when that animal has become a danger to people or to other animals, or when the animal is in such pain that there is no other choice. Owners are paramount in any discussion of euthanasia, and everything should be done to help them with their decision. The lack of resources is not a reason for euthanasia if we can be confident of a successful outcome. Under a paragraph called “Long-termism”, he states that, “we need to ensure that our practice is able to continue functioning and employing staff by making a reasonable net profit on services and products,

It is absolutely wrong that we should not consider the best interests of the animal in front of us. It is up to the practice to make this work. The other concern is that all this was written by a veterinary surgeon who is a specialist in animal welfare science!

Pre-nups – What’s that all about then? In June of this year, the High Court handed down a judgment in another big-money case involving a pre-nuptial agreement (more commonly known as a ‘pre-nup’). The wife sought to rely on a pre-nup, which had been signed by her and her husband before they were married. She hoped to protect her inheritance which she had received of around £27m, both before and during the marriage. The husband argued that he should not be bound by the pre-nup, despite having signed it. The court reiterated the law prevalent in this country since 2010, and upheld the agreement. It is now established law that a properly drafted prenup, freely entered into by two parties who are fully aware of its implications, will be respected by the court. The only exceptions to this are where to uphold the agreement would leave one party in a predicament of real financial need, or would not meet the reasonable requirements of any child of the marriage. Whilst it only tends to be the big-money cases that are publicised, pre-nups are becoming more common-place for those with more modest assets. They are particularly relevant for people marrying in later life, or marrying for a second time. Such people are more likely to be bringing assets into the marriage with them, such as property and family inheritance, which they may wish to protect, either for themselves or for their children.

However pre-nups are not just relevant where there is an obviously uneven distribution of wealth going into the marriage and a pre-nup can be seen as sensible financial planning for the, hopefully unlikely, event that the marriage does break down. It is important that a pre-nup is prepared by a Family Law expert because these agreements are still not automatically binding on the court, and will only be upheld if it can be demonstrated that the agreement was entered into in a manner in accordance with the guidelines set out by the Supreme Court. The R.A.O.B. (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes), is a philanthropic organisation which is active at all levels in our society. Whilst it is non-political and non-religious, members are inspired to commit to a meaningful and peaceful way of life. The origins of the Order date from the theatrical fraternity of the 1820s, and over time, it became more active in philanthropic works, such as the opening of orphanages. There are three levels within the Order: “Grand Lodge”, “Provincial Grand Lodge” and “Minor Lodge”, of which Bourne’s Willoughby Lodge, in Burghley Street, is one of the latter. The Willoughby Lodge No. 4172 - A Brief History The Lodge was founded on March 22nd 1922, under the Nottinghamshire Provincial Grand Lodge. Four years later, it was transferred to the Peterborough and District Provincial Grand Lodge. Since the Peterborough Province was founded in that year, it is almost certain that the Willoughby Lodge was one of the original Lodges that formed the Province. Its first meeting was held in The Crown Hotel in West Street and the Lodge then moved to The Bull Inn, (now The Burghley Arms) in the 1930s. The former Steward and Patteson’s brewery site in Manning Road, (later to become Johnson’s Tractors and now Browning Court) was its next home, with meetings held upstairs and bingo and whist drives on the ground floor. In 1964, Bro. Herbert Astley and a group of brethren purchased the site and building of the former Stafford Basket Factory in 58

Burghley Street, in order that the Willoughby Lodge would always have a home, and that is where it resides to this day. The Lodge Today The aims of the Lodge are to help local organisations, (such as The Butterfield Centre, The Salvation Army and The Willoughby School), besides specific needful children and fellow members in times of need. Nationally, much support is given to The Notts. and Lincs. Air Ambulance Service. Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Beating the Burglars. Choosing a subject this month has been easy. Unfortunately, as you may have seen in the local media and on social media, there has been a series of burglaries in the Bourne and Market Deeping area. The fact that someone has entered your home and rifled through all your personal belongings can be devastating. As such, I thought it appropriate to pass on some simple home security tips and advice, especially with the holiday season in full swing.

Home Security: • Make sure all doors are firmly closed and locked, even if you are at home. You will be surprised how many people don’t lock their doors. Imagine how long it takes to slip in through an insecure door and take a handbag or the keys to your car! • Any window larger than a human head should have a lock on it. If you leave a room, then shut and lock the window. If you leave the house, ensure ALL windows are shut and locked. • Set the alarm if you have one, but let a key holder know the code. If you don’t have an alarm system, then consider installing one. These can be invaluable in deterring burglars. • Consider installing a CCTV system. This will greatly assist the police in identifying any offenders. • Make sure all valuables, such as jewellery, are out of sight and hidden well away. • Keep all personal documents, vehicle documents and your car keys hidden out of sight. • Use automatic timers to light up your home and consider using timers on any radios inside your property to give the appearance of occupancy. • Make sure you have adequate and suitable external lighting. • Ask a friend or neighbour to check on your house regularly to clear post from the letterbox, put out the bin, and return it, on bin days and water the plants. • Ask your neighbour to park on your drive if you are away for a few days, to make it look like someone is living there.

To Stop or Not to Stop - That is the Question! Whether it be police, fire or ambulance, that feeling you get when you are waiting on a red traffic light, and you can see and/or hear the emergency vehicle on a call approaching from behind – what to do? Are you ALLOWED to go over the STOP line in this situation? Lucy (pictured here in her beloved car “Charlie”) passed with BIG TOM Driving School a few months ago and texted us recently to say that she had driven over 3,000 miles in various locations of the UK and thanked us for preparing her properly for real-life driving, rather than just for the driving test. But she had a question about what to do when an emergency vehicle on a call approaches from behind when you are stationary at a red traffic light. She recently had this happen to her. She decided to NOT drive over the stop line at the traffic lights when an ambulance approached from behind, and many people (including some experienced drivers) have since criticised her for not getting out of the way. She contacted us, as we did cover EXACTLY this situation in her driving training, and she was now wanting some assurance that, what she was told in her training, was actually correct. I was happy to confirm to her that her training was technically correct and also up to date. This situation is something that crops up regularly. There is a natural, instinctive reaction to quite simply do anything that is required to “get out of the way” of the emergency vehicle. However, you need to take care. The only time you are allowed to drive through a STOP line on a red traffic light, is when a police officer in uniform actually directs you to do so. The fact is you have no legal right to go through the red light, not by one inch, one foot or one metre. When this exact situation happened on a recent driving test that I observed from the back seat of a BIG TOM Driving School car, it was interesting to note that the Examiner, without saying a single word, just pointed to the left to the candidate on test. He did not point forwards, but to the left. We were, however, the lead car at the traffic lights, the candidate did shuffle the car to the left, but NOT over the STOP line as it would have been illegal to have done so. 62

Drivers of emergency vehicles are entitled to ‘make progress’ in ways that the public are not. When on a call, they are exempt from laws regarding speed limits, traffic lights, keep left/right bollards, and even sirens in the night time hours. But crucially, they are not permitted to USE the lights and sirens of the vehicle to intimidate other road users to break the law, or endanger other road users. A qualified ERDT Instructor (Emergency Response Driver Training Instructor) confirmed to me that, whilst being trained approaching red traffic lights, emergency vehicle drivers are taught to consider the viable option of safely positioning the vehicle in the oncoming lane(s) to therefore prevent any drivers who are held on the red light in front from being tempted to drive over the STOP line. On occasion, due to the layout of the road/junction, this option is not always available or chosen. If the situation arises, where the emergency vehicle driver approaches heavy traffic being held at a red traffic light which is unable to assist the emergency vehicle driver in any way other than going through the red light, then the sirens are to be turned off, and the emergency vehicle is to be held 4-6 car lengths BACK from the stationary traffic, wait for the traffic lights to turn green before then attempting to make progress again. This is how they are trained to deal with the scenario given by Lucy in her question. A former resident of Bourne, Paul feels a strong affinity with this place, having seen it through the heady days of Hot Chocolate, Geno Washington and countless other “names” from the Seventies, through good times and, recently, even better times. He and his team are responsible for many cultural services and leisure amenities across the south of the county. They have organised successful events at Grantham and Stamford Arts Centres and, over recent years, have introduced “Meres Live” at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre, bringing such acts as Brian May, Brendan Cole, Jimmy Carr and Bill Bailey to Grantham. The Corn Exchange is well known as a venue for hiring for weddings, family functions and community groups and is hired for music events. There is the possibility to set out some 200 seats and there have already been some recent successful nostalgia matinee events, with up to 180 people attending at a time. “I genuinely believe that the Corn Exchange is a jewel for Bourne and district, and should be a hub for all parts of the community, including schools”, Paul explains enthusiastically, as he outlines some of the plans for the coming months. 66

It is good to have a little head movement!

If you only want to hit the ball short distances, then keep your head still, as so many of you are told to do. If you are going to complete a full shoulder turn on the backswing, then your head must rotate with the spine and therefore move slightly away from the target - the head will go with the body. Then, as you swing through impact, the head should move towards, and look at the target. Henrik Stenson, Annika Sorrenstam and David Duval all allow their head to release to the target very quickly after impact. If you maintain zero head movement, you will only manage around 60 degrees of rotation on the backswing, and the result could be a flick at the ball moving it 150 yards down the fairway. To hit the ball further down the fairway, you have to allow your body to move freely, and that means the head has to move a little.
