Welcome to our October edition... Welcome to our fiftieth issue and time to celebrate, with this one fuller than ever with features, advice and ideas. Don’t forget that “Stoptober” is now upon us. I’ve always been a bit of a collector of useful graffiti and the odd whimsical message. Therefore, the advice on the back of a lorry seen last week, being driven by one of our not-so-slim brothers, seemed more than appropriate: “Life is uncertain… so eat your pudding first!” – a case of “Do as I do, and do as I say!”

Bob the Vet Gone but well remembered by many... My father, Bob Schwarz, missed out on his century, when he died on August 7th 2015, at the age of ninety-six. It gives me a lot of pleasure to be able to share with our readers, a number of memories which we have of “Bob the Vet”, whether as his children, or as farmers and friends whose lives have been enriched along the way, by having known him. Arriving in Bourne in 1952, a year after having graduated from Liverpool University in Veterinary Medicine, Bob and his wife Jessie rented a flat at first, on West Street, owned by Mrs Fitzgerald, standing next to the Baptist Chapel.

The veterinary surgery then, and remaining there until the move in 1970 into Exeter Street, ( and now occupied by the present incumbent, another Liverpool graduate, Wayne Smith), was on West Road, within walking distance, as was The Crown in the other direction, hosted then by Jack and Win Teesdale. Once asked whether he used to drink in there very much, Bob related a story about the night his first child Annette was born, and he was caught “in the chair”. “Friends” appeared from all corners of the pub, and maybe from other parts of town too, to wet the baby’s head, leaving a large hole in his wallet! The new vet had arrived and he was a good bloke! The tragic loss of Philip (“Doc”) Emson and his wife Doris, in a road accident on their return from Pontefract Races in 1955 hit Bob particularly hard. John and Isabel Gibb replaced the Emsons; Ken Jobson, the other partner at the time, was later to be replaced by Keith Malone, and Bob retired in 1984. It has been a privilege to have grown up in Bourne, as “Bob’s lad”, and hearing so much praise for his way with their pets, (which would invariably involve his

kissing their ailing dog), his patience and always having the time to chat to the owner. More than once, I heard him conclude that the pet was fine and it was the owner who was the one needing the treatment! Not to mention his taking a swig from the Anodyne bottle now and then, to relieve all manner of aches and pains. And, yes, the liniment (“hoss oils”) I was encouraged to rub on my legs before the winter football match! I remember having spent hours accompanying Dad on farms, often up to his armpits in cow, and smiling as the slimy calf flopped on to the straw. Reminiscences from several farmers whose calves, lambs or piglets had been castrated by the “man in the old brown smock” have always proved amusing, whether it has involved the testicles being thrown to the sow in the next pen or being taken home to be eaten by his family! I suspect that there will be many more occasions when tales will be told and the grand old man fondly remembered.

Let’s hope so.

Time for Textiles and Interiors The nights are getting darker and the hour goes back so days at the allotment or in the vegetable garden are getting shorter and we are able to spend a little more time following other pursuits. The first frosts will probably appear this month, if we haven’t already experienced any in September (the month did begin with some unusually cold spells) and the last of many of this year’s crops need picking, as they will not survive. Most of the work this month involves clearing the plot, composting the debris (unless it shows signs of disease) and digging. Once dug I cover my soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. Also don’t forget to remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot. Either earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants to prevent strong winds blowing them over and earth up leeks , to keep the stems blanched. Also it is a good idea to remove any yellowing leaves from brassicas as leaving them on the ground to rot risks spreading grey mould. Crops to sow this month are; early varieties of broad beans, spring cabbages, garlic and overwintering onion sets: I had a very successful early onion crop, much better than my main crop onions, and I will be planting these early onions again this year.

We associate garlic with a Mediterranean climate but it requires an initial period of cold weather, so sowing in the autumn is an ideal time: garlic can be grown from bulbs bought in the supermarket but they are not guaranteed to be disease free, which commercially grown are. Rhubarb is entering its dormant period and can be dived and replanted any time up until March. Happy gardening!

We’ve just been to the Trade Fair and come back full of enthusiasm. The new trends for the coming season are everywhere to be seen. For home interiors, there is no avoiding grey in all its many shades. It is gorgeous when teamed with the new spice and mustard colourways. Besides that, everything in duck egg is still strong, although it’s now been re-named as eau-de-nil! Nature inspires the designs with lots of leaf patterns and botanicals. Although there is still a retro feel to the textile prints on show, there are, coming up in a big way, geometrics that are influenced by traditional Moroccan tiles. As always, whatever your style, there is something to please you in stores now.

Sponsored Golf Nets Cash for Pilot Fish! Pilot Fish held their “Golf Day” on September 11th at Greetham Valley Golf Club. The sun was shining and all seven teams were eager to join in with fund-raising for the Phoebe Research Fund. The teams included Robin Immink, from GregoireBesson, who thoroughly enjoyed the day. Raffle prizes were donated, and players were charged extra to participate in the “Longest Drive” and the “Nearest the Pin” competitions. Vicki Coates, Manager at Bourne-based Pilot Fish, commented, “The sun was out and everyone was in high spirits for the fund-raising activity. An amazing £725 was raised, which is fabulous for a small company to raise. Everyone was very generous with their raffle prizes, which included 8

Late Night Mystery Solved Imagine the scene … early hours of the morning, walking home after a surfeit of wine gums, and there, lurking under the trees at the top of North Road, an elderly couple, clearly “on a mission” and soon apologising to us for their suspicious presence. Suddenly, with a dozen bright spotlights approaching from the north and the heavy breathing of several Lyra-clad cyclists as the peloton sped past, it soon became apparent that our night-owls were clearly spectators - but for what, and why in the middle of a late summer’s night? Bourne residents, Peter and Pauline Schup, were eagerly expecting their grandson, Michael Browning, a seventeen year old student at Carres Grammar School in Sleaford, to come hurtling past at some point during the night. Michael and his four friends were part of a mammoth fourhundred- strong contingent of sponsored cyclists, passing through Bourne, having left Newcastle fourteen hours earlier and about to speed on to Smithfields Market in London. The 305 miles were to be consumed within 24 hours! With nothing but intense admiration for such an amazing effort, we all proceeded to bellow our support as these heroes raced by us. “Was that Michael?” we kept asking. “Can’t really tell, they’re going so fast”, came the reply, every time a group powered by.

HOWEVER… not wishing to consign the recent cricket season to the history books already, Bourne Cricket Club are promoting a fund-raising event, aiming to raise much-needed money for their Junior section, specifically for a new non-turf pitch on the Abbey Lawn, and associated coaching equipment. On Saturday 31st October at 7pm, the Corn Exchange will be the venue for a musical group from Newcastle, The Pedantics, whose lead singer is the talented daughter of Bourne C.C. Committee member, and former Chairman, Charles Friend. Tickets are £15, pre-purchased only, and are available from Rutland Sports.

Michael and Sleaford school friends, Conor O’Leary, Alisdair Campbell, Tim Gutteridge and Maxim Burrows were all raising sponsor money for their chosen charities, The Teenage Cancer Trust, The Alzheimer’s Society, Parkinsons U.K. and The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. They all raised well over £500 each and deserve as big a cheer as possible for such a fabulous effort. Pity Grandad and Grandma missed them!

In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019.

Fame at last! The footbridge over Bourne Eau on South Street has recently been named as one of the ten best locations in Britain to play Poohsticks, according to internet tourism site, “Visit England”. The list includes bridges from all over the country, from Watendlath in Cumbria to Boscastle in Cornwall, which have been rated against a strict set of Poohsticks criteria. The original bridge in Ashdown Forest, East Sussex, was where Winnie-the-Pooh and friends would drop their stick into the water and then turn to see which would appear first on the other side. Poohsticks first featured in A.A. Milne’s “The House at Pooh Corner”, published in 1928, and has remained one of the nation’s favourite traditional games. Dr Rhys Morgan, director of engineering and education at the Royal Academy of Engineering, as well as a dad of two and avid Poohsticks player himself, has used his expertise to create a formula for the perfect Poohstick. What a shame then that the water level in Bourne is so low, and the current almost non-existent at the moment, for any serious competition to be possible. What a shame, too, that such an innocent pursuit should be subjected to the following “Nanny State” safety missive on social media: “When playing pooh sticks, do not allow children to lean over the sides of the bridge. Children should be supervised at all times by an adult”, advised this tweet from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. As if ……!

m o r f s d Wor r o y a M the We are now three months into our Mayoral year and we hope that you have been able to enjoy a welcome summer break.

The highlight of these early months was undoubtedly the performance staged by the Bourne Abbey Primary Academy of ‘Bourne Will Rock You’. I anticipated the enthusiasm of the youngsters, (with perhaps a ‘cuteness’ of Year 6 children delighting their peers, friends and family), but I did not expect such a quality show. Mr. Clingo and his team elicited such a mature performance out of his nine and ten-year-olds, revealing talent and timing, way beyond children of such tender years.

They created, in what was a very technical show, a sense of infectious enjoyment, which was transmitted to a rapturous audience, eager to clap hands and join in with Queen’s familiar anthems. I am delighted that Mr. Clingo is preparing a twentyfive to thirty minute version, as my pre-Dinner entertainment at my Civic Dinner at the Corn Exchange on October 9th. I hope to raise £500 for my charities, and I am pleased to report that tickets, priced £26.00, are selling well. The “Mayor of Bourne” is the formal title that stands alongside my being the Chairman of Bourne Town Council and, in that capacity, I am supporting, at an SKDC Consultation Meeting, the developers who are representing Lidl who wish to build a store at the southern end of the town. I recognise and appreciate that there are some who consider the development unwelcome, and that there are valid considerations to support that view. But they would appear to be very much in the minority. A consultation exercise demonstrated widespread support amongst those who attended, and the members of the Bourne Town Council all felt that, on balance, the proposal would be beneficial for Bourne residents. Very unscientific research, of simply talking to a large number of people and observing social media comment, would seem to indicate that the Lidl development has overwhelming support, and I am surprised by the number of people who say that it will save them travelling to Stamford to shop on a weekly or fortnightly basis. That money will be spent in Bourne, creating jobs, increasing retail competition and, if traditional demand and supply economic theory holds, putting downward pressure on prices.

In November, we will be hosting a Beetle Drive, with the location and date to be announced. We used to attend Beetle Drives in our youth and we envisage an event which not only stirs memories for the mature, but create an enjoyable early evening family occasion. If your child can throw a dice, draw a beetle and appreciate the thrill of a competition, they will enjoy themselves. Creating & Synchronising Playlists to your iPhone/iPad using iTunes Click on Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres

With apologies this month to readers that do not use iTunes for their Apple devices, but I’m covering this topic as it is one of the most common questions I’m asked, and seems to be widely misunderstood. The first thing to do is to install iTunes on your PC, and use your main charging cable to connect your iPhone/iPad to your PC’s USB port. When connected, a new icon will appear in iTunes (as shown circled). We’ll assume that you already have music loaded in iTunes, either from your CD collection or purchased. The next thing to do is create a Playlist.

Click File – New - Playlist

Your music library will now appear on the left (sorted by album, artist or song) and the new Playlist will be on the right. Initially, the Playlist will be empty but you can start to populate it by dragging music with your left mouse button from the left panel to the right. Continue until you have created the playlist that you would like, filling it with your favourite music that you want to take ‘on the road’. Once this is done you will have a custom playlist saved on your PC within iTunes. Now, we need to ‘synchronise’ this with your iPhone/iPad to copy that music to your device.

iTunes will now create a Playlist frame and you will be prompted to click Edit Playlist to add your music to the new playlist. You can call the playlist almost anything you wish, but we’ll leave this example called simply ‘Playlist’.

Click on the icon that popped up when you connected your iPhone/iPad to display your device in iTunes.

Click Edit Playlist

The right panel should now show Sync Music at the top and options below.

In the first section you should see a list of Playlists, those created by you and a number of playlists automatically created by iTunes. In the example, our ‘Playlist’ is shown at the bottom as it is the newest. (Note: I have another customised playlist available in the list shown called ‘Car’.) Click in the box to the left of Playlist This notifies iTunes that we want to send this playlist to our phone/tablet. Click Sync (at the bottom right of this iTunes window)

iTunes will now synchronise that playlist and copy it to your iPhone/ iPad. How long this takes depends on the number of tracks that you have selected. You can monitor progress at the top of iTunes.

When in the Sync window, you should also note that you can not only choose to synchronise playlist but also bands, genres and albums. You can also ‘mix’ these; so, for example, you could select a playlist AND select a particular album or band. You can also select multiple playlists (so I could tick Car and Playlist in the example and both would be copied over).

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau intelligence team is warning people of a new approach being used by scammers to carry-out “vishing” scams, through informing consumers of a pending Council Tax rebate.

Be aware of Council Tax Rebate Scams

Fraudsters, purporting to be from a local council, have targeted both male and female victims aged sixty and over, phoning to say that they have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket for a number of years and that they are entitled to a rebate; they normally say that this rebate should be worth approximately £7000. Once a victim is convinced that they are due a rebate for having been in the wrong tax bracket, the fraudster tells them that, in order to receive the rebate, they will need to pay an administration fee in advance; the payment they ask for varies between £60 - £350. The victim provides the details and makes the payment, but then is no longer able to make contact with the person they spoke to on the phone. When they phone their council about the rebate, the council will confirm that they know nothing about it and that they have been contacted by fraudsters. Protect yourself from vishing: • Your local council will never phone out-of-the-blue to discuss a council tax rebate - if you receive a call of this nature, put the phone down straight away. • No legitimate organisation will ask you to pay an advanced fee in order receive owed money; so never give them your card details. • If you think you have been a victim of fraud, hang up the phone and, prior to making another call to report it, wait five minutes to clear the line as fraudsters sometimes keep the line open. Then call your bank or card issuer to report the fraud. Where it is possible, use a different phone line to make the phone call. To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use their online fraud reporting tool at www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

Goat’s cheese moussaka Just so many interesting flavours go into the making of a moussaka, and the combination of aubergine, minced beef and goat’s cheese, seems a perfect fit. This is a dish that takes time to prepare and cook, but you will be well rewarded with a fantastic tasting dish.

Method 1. Pre-heat the oven to 190°C / gas 5. 2. In a large pan, cook the onions in the olive oil for 2-3 minutes until soft but not coloured; then add the beef and cook until it has browned. Drain off the excess fat from the frying pan. 3. Stir in the garlic, cinnamon, chilli and thyme. Cook for one minute before adding the chopped tomatoes and oregano. Simmer for about 45 minutes to one hour, season with salt and pepper, stirring every so often. 4. Place the sliced aubergines on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, season with a little salt and pepper, and pop into the oven until nicely browned turning once.

To make the béchamel sauce 1. Melt the goat’s butter in a medium saucepan, stir in the flour, remove from heat and gradually stir in the goat’s milk, return to a low heat and cook for five minutes, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens. Then remove from the heat. 2. Stir in 100g of the goat’s cheese, chopped parsley and egg yolks. Season with salt and pepper. To Assemble 1. Cover the base of an oven-proof dish, approx 25cm x 20cm, with the mince. Top with the aubergine slices, then the cheese sauce. Finally scatter over the last of the goat’s cheese, sprinkle with paprika and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown. 2. Serve with a mixed salad, and warm crusty bread

Hallowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-ortreating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

What’s that all about then?

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. “Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en. It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

Plantar fasciitis feels like: Tenderness on your heel or the bottom of the foot. What it is: The plantar fascia is the band of tissue that runs from your heel bone to the ball of your foot. When this dual-purpose, shock absorber and arch support is strained, small tears develop and the tissue stiffens as a protective response, causing foot pain. Inflammation can also result from any abrupt change, or increase, in your normal walking routine. People with high arches or who walk on the insides of their feet (known as pronating) are particularly susceptible. You know you have plantar fasciitis if you feel pain in your heel or arch, first thing in the morning. If the problem is left untreated, it can cause a build-up of calcium, which may create a painful, bony growth around the heel, known as a heel spur.

What to do about it: At the first sign of stiffness in the bottom of your foot, loosen up the tissue by doing this stretch: Sit with the ankle of your injured foot across the opposite thigh. Pull your toes towards the shin with your hand until you feel a stretch in the arch. Run your opposite hand along the sole of the foot; you should feel a taut band of tissue. Do ten stretches, holding each for ten seconds. Then stand and massage your foot by rolling it on a golf ball or on a full water bottle. Choose walking shoes that are not too flexible in the middle. They should be bendable at the ball, but provide stiffness and support at the arch. Generally, the pain does disappear but it can take a long time. Unfortunately, ligaments have a poor blood supply, and that is one reason why ligaments do not heal as fast as we would like them to heal.

Bourne Rugby Union Football Club How to Join If you, or your child, want to try out rugby, then you simply turn up at a training session. Practices and matches take place each Sunday morning during the September to May season, and start at 10.30am, with new players welcome at any time during the season. Bourne Rugby Club was founded almost thirty years ago, and has its pitches and clubhouse on Milking Nook Drove, off Spalding Road.

Senior Rugby The club has a Senior 1st XV who play on Saturday afternoons and train twice a week at the club (Tuesdays and Thursdays 7 – 8.30pm), as well as a Development team who play and train at the same times. The Development team comprises younger players who are still learning the finer points of the game, and a sprinkling of older hands who use their experience to assist in their development.

School Years 1 – 3 play tag rugby, which is a non-contact version of the game aimed at developing a basic understanding of the rules, learning ball handling skills and building fitness and teamwork. From Year 4, children are gradually introduced to the contact elements of the game over a two to three year period.

Ladies Rugby

With RFU (the game’s governing body) qualified coaches at every age range, the club’s aim is to provide a safe environment for children to learn and enjoy the game of rugby. The club has comprehensive policies in place to protect the health and welfare of children and to uphold fair play and positive attitudes to sport.

Last season saw the ladies join in the action at BRUFC, with the introduction of the highly successful “non-contact” version of the game. On Thursday evenings, alongside the training session for both men and ladies, there is now a “Ladies Rugby Fit” slot, where ladies of all ages can play noncontact rugby for fitness and fun.

Mini and Junior Rugby Mini and Junior rugby have essentially two different versions of the game – tag and contact – for boys and girls aged 6 to 16 years (girls can play in the Mini and Junior sections up to Under 13 level).

Lasting Power of Attorney

Act While You Can

Many of us refuse to accept that we might lose our mental capacity, and so don’t think about how we would manage our financial affairs if we did. Statistics show that there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, of whom 40,000 are under sixty-five years of age. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, this number will increase. One of the most important things you should think about is a “Lasting Power of Attorney” (LPA). This document enables you to appoint who you want to deal with your finances and affairs, or your health and welfare, when you become unable to do so. There are two types of LPA.

A property and financial affairs LPA. This enables you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf about your money matters. They would be able to make decisions on buying and selling your property, running your bank accounts, dealing with your bills and state benefits, and investing your money. This type of LPA can also be useful if you need your attorney to help you because of physical incapacity as well as mental incapacity.

A health and welfare LPA. This enables you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions about your care, including where you live and what medical treatment you receive. It can also deal with any specific end-of-life care you may feel strongly about. This LPA only comes into force once you become mentally incapacitated.

The LPA must be put into place while you are still mentally capable. If you do not have a Power of Attorney, and you become mentally incapable of managing your affairs, then an application will need to be made to the Court of Protection who will appoint a Deputy on your behalf. This procedure is quite costly and can take up to six months to put in place. Dementia can turn your world upside-down, but by sorting out your legal and financial affairs and putting them in order, whilst you are able to, ensures that in the future they will be dealt with in the way that you want.

1) Where were you born, and what is your fondest memory of your childhood? I was born in Bourne, at No. 9 Alexandra Terrace. My favourite memory has to be meeting Sue. (“Aaaaaah bless! – Ed.) Beyond that, my final year at Bourne Grammar, where we had a fantastic First X1 football team, managed by Roger Taylor, our Geography teacher, who was the original prototype of Brian Clough. I actually enjoyed playing in that team so much I forgot I was there to pass exams! We had such great camaraderie, which then carried on to the First X1 cricket team with Peter Slowey. 2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? My wife Sue, because she will always tell me unflinchingly how it is, and is a true soul mate. Secondly, my grandad, William Henry Wright, who was so wise and reassuring, and my only regret is that he never met Sue before he died. 3) Which two characters, (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? My grandad, so that I could tell him all about my life after fourteen, when he died, and introduce him to all of my family. I have tried to model my own grandparenting on him. Sir Bobby Robson - what a man, and what achievements! 4) How would you describe yourself in just five words?

This month’s “Hot Seat” is filled by the Business Manager for Venues and Facilities at South Kesteven District Council. “Bourne born-and-bred”, Paul Stokes is the son of the late Alec Stokes, (a key figure in the glorious “BRM story” for many years, and a familiar figure in both Bourne and the motor racing world). Paul attended Bourne County Primary and then Bourne Grammar School, where he met Sue, the childhood sweetheart who is still by his side in Grantham, fourty-five years later! Their two children, Dominic and Louise, have now presented them with six grandchildren. Paul’s lifetime love of all sports, from football and cricket to table tennis, has recently been augmented by ballroom and Latin-style dancing, to which he and Sue now devote hours of “Strictly”inspired dedication!

I think Bourne is a great place but I want to see the Corn Exchange full to the brim every weekend and Bourne Town Football team in the UCL Premier division at least, where they belong! (Last month’s “Discovering Bourne” featured Paul’s plans and hopes for the future of Bourne’s “jewel”, that is the Corn Exchange.) 6) What advice would you give to a 16 year old you? Every football tackle isn’t a matter of life and death and every ball in cricket can’t be hit for six. Count to three when the red mist starts to appear… anybody who has played sport with me will understand that, especially the poor chap whose knee stopped my table tennis bat after I threw it!

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Domestic Abuse Domestic abuse is a crime that cuts across all social, cultural and religious boundaries. It has far reaching consequences for victims, witnesses, their families and the wider community. Nationally, one in four women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives, as will one in six men, with the police receiving a call about domestic abuse every minute in the UK. Two women are murdered every week in England and Wales, at the hands of their partners or ex-partners. Domestic abuse is described as any incident, or pattern of incidents, of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. This can encompass, but is not limited to, psychological, physical, sexual, financial and/or emotional.

Making the decision to seek help or leave an abusive relationship is difficult. Remember:

This definition includes ‘honour’-based violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage, and it is clear that victims are not confined to one gender or ethnic group.

• You can’t change your partner’s behaviour: he/ she needs to realise they have a problem and to seek help.

Domestic abuse can take place anywhere, not just in the home. Research has shown that it is rarely a one-off event. Abuse tends to happen more and more over time - each time getting more serious. Whatever the extent of the violence, the abuse almost always leaves those suffering it to feel frightened, isolated, humiliated or ashamed.

If you suffer from or witness any form of domestic abuse, please report it. To contact Lincolnshire Police you can: Call 999 in an emergency, for a crime in progress, or if you and your children are in immediate danger. Call 101 on any other occasion.

• You are not alone: domestic abuse can affect people in all kinds of relationships. • You are not to blame: someone using violence and abuse always makes a choice about the ways they behave.

• You are in danger if you ignore the abuse: abuse tends to be more severe and happens more often over time. • Take action, do not remain isolated and report what is happening: get help from someone you trust, or you can contact an organisation that offers information and support. Thinking about leaving and making the decision to leave can be a long process. Planning doesn’t necessarily mean you have to carry it through immediately, or at all. Either way, it may help you to consider all your options. Making a safety plan may help you to feel more in control of the situation and give you the confidence to take action to protect yourself and your children. Become a LIVES First Responder • No previous medical experience is necessary. • Full free training (four days) is provided. • Once trained, you only need to give as much time as you can spare.

There are many benefits of living in rural communities, but what happens when you, or someone near to you, needs urgent medical attention? Can you be sure of that crucial rapid response? With large distances and isolated communities, roads in Lincolnshire are not always adequate to ensure that an ambulance can arrive soon enough in an emergency. It is one very clear fact of life that, in any emergency, those first few extra minutes are vital and can be the difference between life and death.

So where do “LIVES First Responders” come on to the scene? Every one a volunteer, willing to give up their time to help others, First Responders receive notification that assistance is required urgently, when a 999 call is made. The ambulance is mobilised and aims to have arrived on the scene within eight minutes. The First Responder “on call” will strive to be there at least two minutes sooner than that – at your side within five to six minutes of the call being made!

So how can you get involved, and make such a worthwhile contribution to your community? When you become a LIVES First Responder, you will receive free four day ‘Emergency first person on scene’ training, enabling you to provide care, whilst waiting for the ambulance to arrive.You will respond to breathing difficulties, heart attacks, fits and strokes, chest pains, unconscious patients, choking and cardiac arrests.You will not go to anyone under 12 years old or anyone with traumatic injury, although this would be allowed, were you to choose to undergo further training to become a higher level First Responder.

There are nearly 700 First Responders, and 54 Medics across the county attending approximately 18,000 calls per year – a number which continues to rise.The “Medics” include doctors, nurses and paramedics who can bring additional emergency care skills to the incident. In this area of South Lincolnshire, there are several well-established groups of First Responders, (in Bourne, Morton, Thurlby, Billingborough and Market Deeping, to name but a few) serving a wide area. The fact that there are so many ensures that help is at hand … and quickly!

Chihuahuas and Chickens As you get older in life and you have had more experiences, there are some conclusions about living that you come to. At 56 years of age my conclusion is that all households should have at least one chihuahua and some chickens. As this article is mainly about chickens, I will only give a brief reason for having a chihuahua. They are intelligent, full of character, extremely cute and portable! The fantastic thing about chickens is not only do they make great pets but they also give you eggs. I have been keeping chickens for the last eight years. I am continually fascinated by their behaviour and the noises they make. They are great free range in the garden and will eat most of your garden pests. However there are certain plants that they also love so you either have to protect these plants or choose not to grow them! I was initially surprised by how carniverous chickens are. As well eating insects they will steal the dog’s bones to get the marrow and other bits and pieces. Our original chickens are quite old now. We had three left of the original six and they had pretty well stopped laying eggs. Two of these are Buff Orpingtons which we call the “galleons” due to their size. We decided it was time to get some more. When we were selecting the chickens we wanted, the person catching them for us was being harassed by a rather fine cockerel. We ended up taking him and six other chickens home with us.

He takes his duties very seriously, running up and down keeping check on his harem. Luckily we have understanding neighbours (one has a cockerel of their own) and he generally doesn’t start crowing until about 6.00am. It is a sound that all my family love and most times does not wake us up. I appreciate that not everybody will want or be able to keep a cockerel but it has been a great experience for us. One of our new chickens is a little white hen we have called Happy. She follows us everywhere, talking to us as she goes. She tries to help us with the weeding. Recently she followed us into the house and settled down on the settee!

It was quite incredible the difference having a cockerel around made to all the chickens. They all seem much more relaxed and happy. The old girls came back into lay and he keeps our dogs and cats in order.

Pensions Freedom – Part 1

The New Era -”The most radical changes to pensions in almost a century” (George Osborne, March 2015). For this month’s article and the next, I’ll explain the new pension rules to you. It’s fair to say that in my twenty-five years in personal finance, the rate of change in pension legislation has never been as dramatic as it is right now. Pensions are actually a straightforward proposition – they’re simply a tax-efficient plan, allowing you to save for your retirement. The greater the value of the ‘pot’, the higher the level of income you could withdraw. The good news is that the Inland Revenue will add tax-relief to your personal contributions, thereby increasing the final value of your individual pension. Once you reach the age of fifty-five, and at any time after this, you can gain access to your funds. Ordinarily, you can take 25% of your pot as a taxfree Pension Commencement Lump Sum. (PCLS). The other 75% is there to provide an income. Before April 2015, the Government restricted the amount of income that could be taken, year on year, thereby ensuring that your pension paid an income for the rest of your life. This restriction has now been lifted, so that you can gain access to the whole of your pension value at any time after the age of fifty-five.

So, this change in the rules seems like a really good thing, and for relatively low-value pensions, it may well be. For example, a pot of £50,000 would yield a tax-free lump sum of £12,500, plus an annual income of around £177 per month, which may well be taxable, and assumes that you get the best available rate…. which is almost certainly not with your existing insurance company. It seems to be an easy decision. The £37,500 in your pocket is better than £177 per month, hoping that you live to the age of eighty-five or more. However, bear in mind tax! That nice lump sum of £37,500 is taxable, so the chances are that you will lose at least £8,750 in tax, which is reasonable.... but that’s assuming that the £37,500 is your only income for the year. Add, say, another £20,000 of earnings for the year, and you’re up to £13,220 of tax, so any decision you

take needs to be weighed very carefully, and we’d suggest that you take professional advice. The problem is exacerbated as the figures hit £100,000. At that point, you lose your personal allowance altogether and effective tax rates of 60% are not unheard of. The advice is always the same... seek INDEPENDENT financial advice before taking huge decisions like these. We have all seen adverts promising to liberate your pension, even below the age of fifty-five. These are invariably scams and will lead to you paying huge amounts of tax. Many people worry that paying fees to an adviser is not worthwhile, but a good independent financial adviser could well either save you money, or gain you better returns, and will almost certainly pay for themselves many times over.

Barely into our second year at Bourne Elsea Park and yet we have already marked so many amazing firsts for our school.

All of the children have been proud to support charities near and far, such as the British Heart Foundation, Friends of Nyansakia, Children in Need and Comic Relief, through organised events and activities. Sports Day was a lovely way to end the school year and our fledgling PTFA have organised some fantastic events for our children.

The Nativity for Year 2 and Reception was a wonderful family event and this year our new Key Stage 2 class will host a Carol Service at the Abbey Church. We celebrated our formal opening in February, when we were delighted to welcome Mr Tony Worth, CVO Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, to perform the honours. This was a very well-attended event and the children sang songs, read poems and then planted special trees to commemorate this special occasion.

Our partnership with Bourne Abbey C of E Primary Academy is strong and flourishing, as we work together as part of Abbey Academies Trust. So, this September, we welcomed another full Reception class, as well as several new staff including Mrs Copsey, our Head of School, and Miss Pickering, our new Year 1 teacher. Specialist French, ICT, PE and Music teachers are now enriching the educational provision. We offer a widening selection of peripatetic music lessons, (including violin, keyboard, guitar and saxophone) and have a Carnival art team coming in to work with our children. As the year goes on, we are very much looking forward to becoming more involved in the wider community, with attendance at the Remembrance Parade and entry into the Rotary Music Competition. Bourne Elsea Park Church of England Primary Academy continues to strive for excellence whilst caring for all (at a very fast pace!)

The favourite topics last year were definitely “Pirates and Superheroes” in Reception and the visit to Pigeons Farm, as part of their “Animals” topic. Year 2 visited the Delaine bus depot and Mr and Mrs Moody’s impressive vintage car collection, as part of their “Transport” topic. Throughout the year, they have baked, cooked and tasted lots of food, besides creating their own delicious smoothies! 62

One of Englandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest village fairs is set to return this month, on Monday October 4th - and this time visitors can even expect to see some sheep! Last year, the usual sheep auction provided by Melton Market did not take place, but this year the Fair Committee stepped into action and quickly reached an agreement with Newark Livestock Market to trade the sheep, after the event. Visitors to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fair, which runs from 10 am to 4pm, can expect a wide range of craft stalls, music and entertainment for the young and old. There will also be a beer festival at the Fighting Cocks pub throughout the weekend and a celebratory 777th Sheep Fair Ale will be available.

Last year, despite the lack of sheep, about 5,000 people visited Corby Glen for the fair. Entertainment was provided by many talented musicians and dancers. Attractions included clay pigeon shooing, a classic car and motor bike show, and craft stalls. Animal lovers were also able to enter their dogs in the dog show, see birds of prey and meet police dogs. The much anticipated return of the sheep means Committee Members are expecting an even bigger turnout this year.

Golf Tips from Darren Game How to improve your pitching

As the softer conditions rapidly approach, the need to have a sharp, short game is even more important than ever. To hit crisp pitch shots, it is important that the club and body stay connected. If the hands become too active, and the club starts to waft around, then you are moving towards disaster! To help staying connected on these pitch shots, go to the practice area and hit shots, with a towel placed across your chest and tucked under your arms. When you make short strokes, keep the towel tucked in place and have the sensation that the body and club are moving together, and at the same speed. (Please note this does not work with full length swings). I hope this helps your pitching, and remember to look out for the tip in next month’s edition.
