Welcome to our November edition... It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let loose that moustache once more during “Movember”. No, I’m talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimming-up, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This month’s issue is filled with local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events.
I was amused to see that Grantham, the town of my birth and one-time “Britain’s most boring town”, is now being heralded as Britain’s “Viagara capital”, with more prescriptions for the drug being issued than for any other town. No doubt, the good folk of our South Kesteven neighbours would have beaten off stiff competition from many competitors for this accolade! Amongst the customary wideranging assortment of our features and advice pages, this month the Montaz Indian restaurant in West Street is featured, as a well-
I had the good fortune recently to attend the Mayor’s Charity Dinner at the Corn Exchange and be part of what was a marvellous evening of entertainment, excellent food and an impressive boosting of Mayor Philip Knowles’s accumulated charity pot for his three very deserving causes. I hope you all find this month’s issue entertaining and useful, as we start to think about the Christmas period, just around the corner. Thank you everyone for your continuing support and advice. Feedback does matter to us, we always listen and strive to make your favourite freebie even more of a “must-have”!

established part of our town. Hoping to become as well-established, no doubt, is Maxey Hair, a new hairdressing salon in Wherry’s Lane. On a sad note to finish, the town became much the poorer recently when we lost two very popular members of the same longestablished Bourne family. Ashley Woolf, Manager of Smith’s, lost his battle with cancer at the age of thirty, whilst his great-aunt Alice, known for years as “Cissie” Woolf who, with her brother Norman, ran Woolf’s garage on North Street, died aged ninety-two. Both will be fondly remembered, by old and young alike. Enjoy the read!

reams can come true, as local lady, Sandra Upton, is showing with the recent opening of Maxey Hair, the third new unit to open on Wherry’s Lane, just off Bourne’s bustling North Street. Her grandfather, the late Charles William Maxey from Corby Glen, told the teenaged Sandra that one day she would fulfil her dream of owning her own salon. At the time, Sandra was busy qualifying as a ladies hairdresser, but also about to enter the nursing profession. Several years were spent as an auxiliary nurse at Bourne Hospital, then ten years as a community auxiliary, before undertaking formal nurse training. Recently, Sandra has been Deputy Manager at a few local homes for the elderly.
All the time when she was pursuing this profession and bringing up her family, Sandra harboured the dream of one day being able to own her hairdressing salon, and now the opportunity has arrived. Fifteen years ago, Sandra began updating her hairdressing skills by taking her NVQs and, since then has been on many refresher courses, in readiness for the brave new world now awaiting her. Maxey Hair is a bright, spacious and modern salon, with excellent lighting. Sandra’s son, local freelance photographer, Adrian Dewey, has been instrumental

in creating the punchy designs and images within the salon. The family connections also extend to granddaughter, fifteen year old Charlie, who has already contributed much and will be working part-time, once the salon becomes fully operational this month. Sandra will be offering the chance for any hair stylists in the area who would like to rent

out a chair, be it on a short-term basis or as a more permanent arrangement. Anyone interested can get further information from Sandra at the salon. Maxey Hair provide the full range of ladies hairdressing services at very reasonable prices. This includes a reduced rate for senior citizens. Access for disabled customers, including disabled toilet facilities, is
another example of Sandra being mindful of providing something for everyone. This looks like being a very welcome addition to this part of Bourne’s town centre re-development. Sandra Upton, nee Maxey (hence the salon’s name), is about to live her dream and we wish her every success.

of Peterborough Concert Band providing musical accompaniment for the carol singing. Peterborough Gospel Choir will also take to the microphones as will young bagpipe player Kathryn Johnston. The concert will be rounded off with a firework finale at 7pm.
For thousands of people across the area, Lights of Love has become a key event in the festive calendar, offering the chance to take time out of the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparation to remember loved ones.
During the event, which is free to attend, Thorpe Hall’s Chapel will be open and the hospice’s books of remembrance will be available to view. Events fundraiser Jo Killick said: “The Lights of Love event is a favourite with so many people who see it as the start of their festive celebrations. It’s a lovely way to remember and celebrate the lives of special people with family and friends.
This year’s carol concert will take place on Sunday, December 13 The Lights of Love firework finale is the perfect ending to Thorpe Hall’s open air carol concert in the gardens of Thorpe Hall, in Longthorpe, “Once again we’ve got some brilliant musicians to Peterborough, with the mansion house as the lead the singing – the City of Peterborough Concert backdrop. Local Duathlete Representing England Claire Steels, former student at Bourne Grammar School, is, at the time of writing, striving to bring a medal home from Adelaide, South Australia, in the ITU World Duathlon Championships. The event, from October 14th to the 18th, will see the run/ cycle/run sequence, as both men and women chase glory “down under”. Next month’s “Discovering Bourne” will have more on this and, hopefully, news of personal trainer, Claire’s success.

Council News Bourne Town Hall Consultation Don’t miss your chance to give your views on the Town Hall. This iconic building in the centre of the town is passed by, many hundreds of times a day but who stops to consider why it is no longer open? All this is to change, as a public consultation has just started to help determine its future. The consultation runs from October 1st through to November 26th and the Bourne residents are being asked what they consider should happen to the building. An ancient deed gifted the building to the Council and was to be used for the benefit of the people of Bourne. To ensure that you are well-informed, all residents are invited to take part in drop-in information events being held as follows:
• Elsea Park on October 28th from 9.30am until midday • Lawrance Park Community Centre, Thurlby, on November 3rd from 6.30pm until 9.00pm • Bourne Corn Exchange on November 11th from 6.00pm until 8.00pm Bourne Town Hall will also be open on November 11th for people to look around. For full details of the consultation, please see www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/bournetownhall.
Nelly’s Retirement Celebration Nelly Jacobs Bourne Town Clerk decided to hang up her Civic Regalia after 15 years at the end of August. Having steered the Town Council through many testing times Nelly has been at the forefront of local issues and been instrumental in the Town’s success in the East Midlands in Bloom Competition. A well-known figure to the majority of the Bourne public Nelly was rewarded with an intimate retirement celebration at the Corn Exchange. Friends and colleagues congregated to help Nelly celebrate this landmark in her life and to wish her well in her retirement.
Fabulous News!!! Anyone who has been making Father’s Day a really special treat for Dad over the last few years, by going along with him to the Well Head in Bourne, and lingering longingly amongst the rows and rows of vintage cars and motorcycles, please read on. There was a serious threat that 2015 was going to be the last year of this wonderful nostalgic event. HOWEVER…“The Bourne Events Team” are proud to be continuing with the Bourne Classic Car Show next year. Please contact Claire on 01778 421427 if you are available to help us, in any way. Many helpers will make light of the work needed on the day!

Back Pain and Children October 5th to the 11th was National Back Care Awareness Week, which this year focused on back pain experienced by children. Good school bags Children are often required to carry bags full of books, PE kits, musical instruments and other equipment to and from school. Parents should try to limit the weight of school bags as much as possible, and invest in a good quality back pack that the child should wear across both shoulders, ideally with a strap across the chest to keep the load close to their body. Packing the bag with the heaviest items (such as laptops and heavy books) closest to the child’s body, will also make carrying more comfortable, and less likely to strain the muscles of the back. Limit screen time Looking down to use smart phones, tablets and laptops for an extended period can pull the back and neck into an unnatural posture, resulting in pain. Placing limits on the time spent using devices, and encouraging regular breaks, may help to avoid problems. If your child has to use a laptop for homework, consider purchasing a support that elevates the screen to a height that allows him or her to sit up straight to look at it.
Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath, Owner of the Wellhead Practice Osteopathic Treatment for your child’s back pain Regular exercise A sedentary lifestyle is known to contribute to the risk of developing back pain, as well as contributing to obesity. Regular physical activity helps to keep the core muscles that support the spine strong and maintain flexibility, which will help to avoid back pain. Encourage lots of active play, (walking, running, swimming, cycling etc.), to keep your child fit and healthy.
Good quality sleep is vital for both physical and mental development. Make sure that your child has a good sized comfortable bed with a firm mattress and a pillow that supports their head without lifting it too high. One pillow is usually sufficient.

Your child’s back pain may benefit from osteopathic treatment. Using gentle manual therapy, an osteopath will help to resolve any stresses and strains that are affecting their body and relieve their pain.

m o r f s d Wor r o y a M the First of all, I would like to thank everybody who made a contribution to last Friday’s Mayor’s Charity Dinner at the Corn Exchange.
I trust that the one hundred and fifty who attended had an enjoyable time, as the feedback has been very positive. There was a large number of people who made great efforts to ensure its success. I hesitate to name names as I would probably miss out people who worked in the background, but mention must be made of two Town Clerks; Nelly, who started the process before her recent retirement, and Ian, her successor, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Thanks also to the staff at the Corn Exchange; Rachel and her team of caterers, Carol for the flower arrangements, my fellow Councillors who helped in a variety of ways, to Warner’s, Johnsons the Cleaners, “Discovering Bourne” for their assistance, and the numerous shops and firms that donated prizes for our raffle. I am also grateful that we have such fantastic local talent. The children of Andrew Clingo’s Rock Theatre Group set the tone with a wonderfully enthusiastic potted version of “We Will Rock You”, the Queen Musical, and Richard Cejer was brilliant later in the evening when giving a dancing opportunity to all of those with stamina and the inclination! We raised almost £1000 on the night, and I am sure that the thirty to forty guests who travelled to Bourne for the event went away with a good impression of our lovely town.

In my next article, I wish to write about looking after our neighbours who might be more vulnerable and lonely through the dark winter months, and any suggestions or groups that fill this need are invited to get in touch with me at philipknowles@sky.com
May I also just advertise my next couple of charity ventures, which are in November? A Beetle Drive will take place on Saturday November 14th at the Abbey Church Hall, between 2pm and 5pm. The event is aimed at all the family, from children to grandmas and grandads, and light refreshments will be served. Tickets are ÂŁ1.50 per person or ÂŁ5.00 for a family of four. If you can throw a dice and draw a rudimentary beetle, you can have some fun and who knows, perhaps win. During the winter, six pubs in the area will host a series of Pub Challenges, in which they will compete with each other in a variety of games, some being traditional pub pursuits and others a little bit different. The first event is at the Masons Arms on Monday November 9th and, along with the host pub, The Red, The Anchor, Smiths, The Wishing Well and the Jubilee will compete. Come along and enjoy the event, and support one of the pubs taking part. There will be food available, at a very modest cost, for contestants and spectators and, of course, all of them are proud of the wide range of beers and drinks which they dispense.

Pain in the Neck - Jo Sunner offers Advice.
Jo Sunner. Osteopath, Pulse Practice, Bourne. Also at Fitzwilliam Hospital, Peterborough
You may be suffering from neck pain and wondering whether or not all neck discomfort is the same. It’s not. Neck pain can be experienced with a long list of other problems. The combination of symptoms gives us an idea as to why you have neck pain. Here are some of the other symptoms that are commonly experienced with neck pain: · Headache – This may take place because of trigger points within the muscles that end up referring pain in the head. Impinged nerves in the cervical (neck) spine can also cause headaches.
· Fatigue – Tiredness is another symptom that can indicate more serious health problems if it’s combined with neck pain. For a diagnosis, the cause of your neck pain and treatment, call Jo Sunner, Pulse Practice, West Street, Bourne (next to the Post Office), or telephone: 01778 426000. E-mail: josunner@aol.com.
· Stiffness – Stiffness shows that the muscles are preventing movement so that no additional damage will take place to the fundamental structures of the cervical (neck) spine. · Poor range of motion – Not being able to turn your head to the left or right or to your shoulder is one of the causes of neck pain. This sign implies that there is tissue spasm or misaligned vertebrae in your neck. · Tingling/pain or numbness in the arms or hands/fingers – This symptom implies that injury to your neck is more than just a strained muscle or a sprain. It is probably a trapped nerve!!

Schools |
Bourne Westfield - What do we stand for? The start of the school year has been special for children and staff at Bourne Westfield as we celebrate our fortieth year. There has been much to be proud of since 1975, and last year was no different. The children and adults at Bourne Westfield have been thinking about what they stand for, and who their positive roles models are. In the spring, the whole school contributed to the writing of an anti-cyber-bullying song which won first prize in a national competition. Winning meant the children were lucky enough to be visited by athlete, Christine Ohuruogu MBE, who spoke about the importance of doing the right thing and standing up for what you believe in – especially when online. This win provided a competitive bug, and some of our Year 3 children went on to win £3000 worth of books for the school library, in a World Book Day competition with the song – “Lose Yourself Inside a Book”.
morning to back the prostate cancer bike rally. The whole school is always outward-looking, supporting many causes, including £2763.70 raised through a sponsored skipping event, in support of the British Heart Foundation. Our children continue to demonstrate musical and sporting prowess. Our rock band and six piece vocal ensemble were selected to perform at the Lincolnshire Proms in Skegness in June. Similarly, we achieved outstanding sporting success across a wide range of activities; this continued in October, when our cross country teams won all races at the Agilitas Spalding cross country event. The Friends of Westfield have supported our sporting provision by purchasing a £10,000 activity wall. Last year finished on a high with the Year 6 celebrating their amazing SATs results during a presentation ceremony hosted by, gold medallist gymnast, Craig Heap. His inspirational and motivational speech lifted the rafters and reinforced that there are no limits to realising your dreams. In September, we welcomed new children and staff to our outstanding team. This year promises to be even more exciting than last year, as we continue to ‘ignite a passion for learning’.
Bourne Westfield Primary Academy Winning competitions wasn’t the only thing spurring the children on, as they wholeheartedly embarked on community ventures, as ‘Rotakids’ with the Rotary Club of Bourne. They supported the Dimension Skate Park committee and gave up a Saturday 16

Building complete for Greater Peterborough’s brand new school Young people in Peterborough will have even more choices when it comes to schools next year now that the Greater Peterborough University Technical College (GPUTC) is built. The £10 million building, with a £2 million investment into kit will provide a world-class technical education at the Park Crescent campus in Peterborough. It will become home to around 100 students studying either Engineering or the Built Environment from September 2016.The school will also offer traditional GCSEs and A Levels. Complete with separate engineering and construction workshops, individual, specially tailored science labs, computer design rooms, a top floor restaurant with roof terrace, communal zones and an enormous double-height event space. Anglian Water, the main employer sponsor of the GPUTC will be guaranteeing all students job interviews on successful completion of their studies and will provide students with various employer projects and real-life work experience along the way. Phil Brown, Anglian Water’s Head of Learning and Development and Chair of Governors for the GPUTC, said: “At Anglian Water a significant number of our workforce will retire in the next decade and we want the best and brightest engineers and

Montaz
S
tep off Bourne’s West Street and you’re soon transported to an earlier time, with some extraordinary wooden embellishments surrounding one fireplace, a huge open hearth with carved figures, and a bannister rail and newel posts which are a work of art, (not to mention the two tiny mice on one of the wooden posts in the main eating area). When this building, The Old Monkstone House (AD 1671), was the private home of the late and fondly- remembered Jackie Rayner, (one-time woodwork master at both The Grammar School and The Bourne Secondary Modern School), these, we were told, were his creations. Returning now to savour the delights of its present incumbents, the Montaz Indian restaurant, the memories of dear Jackie flood back!
Contemporary Indian cuisine in one of Bourne’s finest buildings
Today is what counts, and here we find a most appealing mixture of traditional Curry, Balti, Biryani and Tandoori dishes on the menu, but these are augmented by the refreshingly varied “Chef’s Recommendations”, all eleven of them. This is very good quality Indian and Bangladeshi fare, using locally produced meat and vegetables, wherever possible, and the finest spices from the east, with all meals freshly cooked and carefully presented.
The friendly staff, led by the Manager, Juned Ahmed, are helpful and courteous, always happy to advise customers on the various dishes on the menu. The wine list includes several well-priced and highly recommended options, at least three reds and three whites excellent value at less than £15 a bottle.
“delicious and entirely memorable.”
Located in a Grade II-listed building it may be, but that’s where the ambitious Montaz group stop looking to the past.

The extremely popular “Wednesday Night Special”, (four courses for £10.95), and the Sunday Lunch Special succeed in attracting a loyal clientele, week after week. There is a take-away service at Montaz, where a 10% discount on the bill operates, whilst free delivery within a five mile radius can be yours, for that quiet night in, (now that “Strictly” has returned on a Saturday evening!) A function room, catering for up to thirty-five diners, offers a superb venue for that corporate event, birthday celebration or business function, where privacy makes the evening really special. The very old premises, with rustic beams and the carved wooden delights already described, are juxtaposed by modern toilet facilities and air-conditioning throughout. The lasting impression, taken from our recent trip to the Montaz, is a combination of cosy, delicious and entirely memorable.

Escape for some Winter Sun – Try the Canary Islands. As the season has now turned and there is a chill in the air, my thoughts this month turn to a little WINTER SUN. The Canary Islands are part of Spain, and are the ideal holiday spot for those looking for glorious weather, beautiful beaches and swimmable, blue sea.
In February and March, there is the famous carnival for those who are looking for culture, whilst the weather can be positively sun-soaked! The different islands offer a variety of experiences.
The trinity of sun, sea and surf combine beautifully in the Canary Islands, so it’s no surprise that this archipelago has earned its place among beach holiday royalty. Across Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma, millions head to the
islands every year. But besides being home to Spain’s largest national park, a wealth of traditional whitewashed towns and with a fascinating volcanic past, there’s much more to the Canaries than its sun-baked beaches!
With the most equatorial climate of any European destination, the seven islands which make up the Canaries are all incredibly popular with holidaymakers, and for different reasons. From Fuerteventura’s golden sands to the nature trails of La Gomera, Tenerife’s bouncing nightlife to the galactic night skies over La Palma. But the best bit? It’s always so easy to take a step back from the tourist bubble and enjoy an authentic slice of Canary culture and cuisine.

As you might expect from a cluster of islands, water plays a huge part in Canary life. Head to the old town of Puerto de la Cruz and you’ll discover Cesar Manrique’s salt water pools of Lido Martianez – a thrilling complex of pools and fountains. There are also the thrills and spills of Siam Park in Tenerife, a vast waterpark bursting with rides and attractions. But you can head to virtually any coast for crystalclear snorkelling and scuba diving. You might even spot an endangered loggerhead turtle!
Call me today and let me arrange your perfect winter sun break…
Travel Counsellors 36
The volcanic influences on the Canaries are everywhere, from the black sands of Tenerife’s El Bollullo and Lanzarote’s El Golfo, to Mount Teide – the third largest volcano in the world. Some regions of the Canary Islands have an otherworldly feel, with tortured rock formations, craters and a strong concentration of caves and caverns, but rewards those who make exploration a key feature of their itinerary. If you’re in search of adventure, put Teide National Park top of your list.

Pensions Freedom – Part 2
Following on from last month’s pension article, I’m going to talk about Flexible Access Drawdown. Previously the majority of retirees would buy an annuity, so firstly I will explain what that is. Individuals save into a pension during their working life and build up a pension “pot”. At some point during the first years of retirement, they will usually consider swapping their pot for an income for life, this is called an annuity. The problem is that rates have been falling over the years and are now seen as poor value. Most people choose to take a static level of income rather than an increasing one which gives them more income whilst they are younger and more able to enjoy it, however over the long term this income loses real value when inflation is taken into account. Once you’ve made the decision, there is no turning back..... until now as the government is consulting on the idea of being able to “sell” your annuity – so watch this space! What is Flexible Access Drawdown Flexible Access Drawdown (FAD) will give you the flexibility of being able to take unlimited - but taxable - withdrawals combined with the options available to pass funds on
after death. Anyone thinking of moving into Flexi Access Drawdown will have to have to decide whether this is the right option for them and I strongly recommend that professional, independent advice is taken, due to the complexities involved. Remember your funds within a pension scheme are supposed to last you for the rest of your life and accessing them for a World Cruise or a Lamborghini may be great in the short term, but the new rules on Universal Credit may prevent you claiming benefits once this pot runs low or dry. One of the things Landmark assess is your attitude to risk, from that we will build you a portfolio which aims to ensure that your pension pot lasts as long as possible. It is therefore essential that you review your strategy on a regular basis, as you may need to amend your plans. Before moving into FAD you and your adviser would need
to understand your risk tolerance and loss capacity, which would then allow you both together to build a suitable investment portfolio to give you the best chance of achieving your plans. The last subject to mention is on the morbid side - death. What happens to my pension when I die?. Some people think it dies with you, which is completely wrong as it does pass down to your family or other beneficiaries. In simple terms, you can nominate anyone you like to receive benefits from your pension on your death, if you die before the age of 75 all benefits are paid tax-free, if you die after the age of 75 the benefits will be taxed in line with the beneficiaries’ own income tax rates (this applies from April 2016 onwards). Forgive the self promotion, but these issues are complicated and important, so have a chat with us and we will explain further.

Beware of the internet! Ashley Madison data leaks could widen cracks in relationships The type of evidence used in family proceedings has changed radically in recent years. With the universality of social media and internet sites, people’s lives are often conducted in the full glare of the public gaze, whether they like it or not. The most recent example has been from the Ashley Madison website which aims to facilitate extra-marital affairs. Hackers have published a data file for download which contains customer details – potentially hugely embarrassing, as well as marriage-wrecking. There is often a misunderstanding about when adultery occurs in a marriage. If you have a sexual affair whilst you are still married, it doesn’t matter that you’ve separated, it is still adultery right up until a decree absolute. But it is very rare to engage a private detective to obtain proof of adultery nowadays. You wouldn’t start a divorce on this ground unless the respondent admits the adultery with an unknown person. The Ashley Madison website is actually going to name and shame people, which could be proof in its own right, if needed. Facebook is another fruitful source of evidence in family proceedings nowadays. The courts strongly discourage reliance on Facebook downloads, but nonetheless some of the more blatant postings can provide compelling evidence in both divorce and children cases, if you’re not careful.

Which Internet Security Suite should I use? undetectable by antivirus software. This is partly due to cheaper malware tools readily available to cybercriminals. These tools allow them to increase the number and variety of malware they produce.
A
t one time I was happy to recommend the use of free antivirus solutions, such as AVG and Avast (the two leading free solutions). However, in recent years, things have changed and viruses now account for less than 40% of the threat to your online security, as criminals turn to other, more successful methods, for stealing your data or loading malicious content onto your system. As such my recommendation is now to invest in a full Internet Security suite. One common response I get when I give this recommendation is, “But I’ve been running AVG/ Avast for years and I don’t have any problems”. This is a flawed argument, as the cyber criminals do not want you to know that you have been attacked and infected. Generally, they want their malicious content to sit hidden on your system with you blissfully unaware. So, just because you can’t detect it or see it, doesn’t mean that you have not been compromised. Areas where the free anti-virus solutions are weak and usually fall short are: Complex Malicious Files: Over the years, malware have become more complex, aggressive, and
Malicious Websites: Malicious websites have also become another way for cybercriminals to reach their victims. Using schemes, cybercriminals can lure you to phishing sites, fake websites designed to steal your information. You can also land on sites that check your computer for software vulnerabilities it can exploit so it can install malware. A visit to a malicious site could also trigger a drive-by download, the automatic download of malware without your knowledge. Privacy Risks: Given the popularity of social media, it’s become typical for people to share a lot of personal information online— be it status updates, locations or photos. However, with the complicated and ever-changing privacy settings of most social networks, you could be sharing more information than you intended. Every detail you post online could be collected to build up a persona and used for identity theft. Your online accounts could also be hijacked by strangers. Information Theft: Data-stealing malware use different tactics to get your information. They can load phishing sites that mimic your bank’s login pages. They can also remember everything you type in and send it to the “bad guys”. Some cybercriminals even created a homemade browser that steals user information.

SPAM and Malicious Email: Today’s spam is crafted to closely resemble legitimate e-mail. Sometimes, the only distinction between a fake and a real message is a few altered links. Aside from looking more convincing, today’s spam is used by cybercriminals to infect your computer. Some messages contain attachments that are actually malware in disguise. Unsecured WiFi and Home Network Security: Cybercriminals can easily hide behind an unsecure network and use your connection to perform malicious activities. They can also steal data from your network-linked devices or even use your devices to spy on you. Free public Wi-Fi hotspots are also unsecured networks. They may be convenient, but “bad guys” can use them to steal your information and hijack your online accounts. Which Internet Security Suite should I choose? A quick search on the web will reveal that there are many solutions. As an independent IT advisor, a couple of times a year I carry out a summary of the top review sites to determine which solutions are performing most effectively. A table, compiled in September 2015, shows that there are three clear market leaders; Bitdefender, Norton and Kaspersky, with the most consistent of these three being Bitdefender. To view the full results table for this survey of reviews go to http://bit.ly/1jYAjhM.

Well, I sowed my green manure in one area of my allotment and it is flourishing: it will need digging in before it flowers, which will be after the winter months, and I will then have to see if it has kept the weeds at bay and provided the soil with enough nutrients to give me a good, healthy crop next year.
T
his month is not as restful as one might think, as the allotment needs a good tidying-up: don’t leave old crops to rot; they may harbour pests and disease. Also a priority this month is to give the allotment or vegetable patch a thorough digging over and spread manure over the surface and also to manure or compost the bean trench. If you have a soil with a low pH then add lime, but not at the same time as compost as they react together. November is the month for pruning fruit trees and bushes, with the exception of cherries and plums, before the weather gets really cold and the ground is too hard or frozen. Also, bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes should be planted now whilst they are dormant. When they are planted, spread a
mulch of well-rotted manure around the base. Leaf mould makes good mulch and if you have plenty of leaves you can easily make a cage to contain the leaves, using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. Apart from the fruit trees, there is very little that can be planted this month and if you haven’t already planted garlic, rhubarb and over-wintering varieties of broad bean, it is your last chance to do so. With rhubarb, spread well-rotted manure around the plant, but don’t cover the crown. If you have heavy soil that tends to hold water then put either gravel or sharp sand in the base of the hole before planting garlic cloves.

| Clubs THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (TRBL) TRBL is the UK’s leading Service charity, providing practical care, advice and support to serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans of all ages and their families. TRBL was formed in 1921, its main purpose to care for those who had suffered as a result of service in the Armed Forces in the Great War of 1914-18, whether through their own service or through that of a husband, father or son. Over six million had served in the war, 725,000 never returned. Of those who came back, 1.75 million had suffered some kind of disability and half of these were permanently disabled. To this figure then had to be added those who depended on the ones who had gone to war - the wives and children, widows and orphans, as well as the parents who had lost
sons in the war, on whom they were often financially dependent. The situation so moved Lance Bombardier Tom Lister, a Lancastrian, that he decided that if the Government was either unable or unwilling to do anything to improve the lives of ex-Service men, he would do something about it himself. This eventually led to the formation of TRBL. They also sought to prevent further sacrifice by reminding the nation of the human cost of war and to work actively for peace. The first Poppy Appeal was held in 1921 with the first Poppy Day on November 11th. TRBL was granted “Royal” status in 1971, and membership was extended to serving members of Her Majesty’s Forces. Now, anyone can become a member of TRBL, whether they have served in the Armed Forces or not.
The Bourne branch of TRBL was established in 1924. There is also a friendly Social Club at 3 Burghley Street, Bourne, with a bar, (open seven evenings a week, plus Sunday afternoon), and live entertainment at least once a month. New members are always welcome; you don’t have to be current or former service personnel, to join TRBL Branch or Club of Bourne. Branch meetings are held at 18.00h on the first Wednesday of the month and Club meetings at 20.00h on the second Monday of the month. Please feel free to come along, without committing to anything; you will always be made welcome.

advice by Hegarty Solicitors
Husbands pay the price for being dishonest in divorce proceedings On October 14th 2015 the Supreme Court delivered a judgment in favour of two wives in cases where they claimed that their husbands had been dishonest about their financial circumstances. As a result, the wives, Varsha Gohil and Alison Sharland, have had their financial claims reinstated. Mrs Gohil had settled her financial claims at a hearing in 2004 and, whilst at the time she had expressed her suspicion that Mr Gohil had been dishonest about his financial circumstances, she had been unable to prove it and therefore accepted a settlement. Then, three years later, she asked the Court to set aside the original settlement because she had new evidence that Mr Gohil had lied about his financial circumstances. In 2012 the High Court ruled that Mr Gohil had been dishonest and that Mrs Gohil’s claims should be reinstated. Mrs Gohil’s success however was short lived because last year the Court of Appeal overturned that decision. Mr and Mrs Sharland had been unable to settle their case and there was a trial in 2012 where the main issue of contention was the value of Mr Sharland’s software company. However, after Mr Sharland gave evidence about the value of the company the parties did reach a settlement. Then, before the judge had sealed the settlement, the media reported that the company was to be offered on the public stock exchange at a value which was around fifteen times that which had been claimed by Mr Sharland during the trial. In 2013 the High Court rejected Mrs Sharland’s application for the settlement not to be sealed and last year the Court of Appeal upheld that decision.
The wives appealed to the Supreme Court and on October 14th it overturned the Court of Appeal’s decisions in both cases and ruled that the settlements would not stand and that Mrs Gohil and Mrs Sharland would have their claims reinstated. The solicitors for Mr Sharland are reported to have said that the ruling could “open the floodgates” to thousands of cases. It certainly highlights the duty owed by spouses to be honest and open about their financial affairs when negotiating a financial settlement, and the potential consequences if they are not.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much
a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Solar Panels time to fit them
…NOW
Thinking of installing solar panels on your property? Take a look to find out why now could be financially the very best time to do it. Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate. This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return. However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) strongly suggest that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments are to see drastic cuts in 2016. In fact, the Feed-in Tariff review document, published on August 27th by the DECC, laid out plans to cut the Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations by as much as 87%. Although the plans have not yet been confirmed, it is likely that all bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019.
58
D I S C O V E R I N G
If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of 31st December will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh! Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes. As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond. requirements, and arrange a free, no obligation quotation.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram
Motoring Blog Revealed by Big Tom A BIG TOM warm welcome to my motoring section, and much needed warmth, as the temperature begins to fall! I have had to shelve my original plan of a yearly review, prior to the Christmas edition next month, as space is tight. However, I have just enough space to inform my readers here of an interesting, regularly updated blog about all things motoring in Bourne, Stamford, Deeping, Spalding, Grantham and Peterborough. It is a fabulous “one-stop” shop window of articles raised in our local press to do with petitions on road safety, Council Parish meeting news, new motoring legislation, roadwork updates, collision news, criminal case updates in our local courts – there really is something for everyone. Some of it is funny, some sad, and some so odd that you might not believe it is true, but I assure you it is all authentic and most certainly was reported by our local press!
I offer it to you as a weekly bitesize collection of motoring news. It can be found on my driving school website: http://www. bigtom.org.uk/ big-tom-blog/
Looking forward to our Christmas edition next month!

“The 1000 Volunteer Challenge” Lincolnshire Police currently has a challenge set by the Police and Crime Commissioner, Alan Hardwick, to have in place one thousand volunteers, by April 2016, as part of his Police and Crime Plan. This will give communities across Lincolnshire the opportunity for local people to contribute to the work of the police and link to their community. It is also an opportunity for people to gain valuable experience which may help when applying for a job, while working alongside police officers and staff. To achieve the “1000 Volunteer Challenge”, Lincolnshire Police has been working in partnership with the voluntary sector to improve the way that we recruit volunteers. Police Support Volunteers (PSVs) undertake a wide range of roles across the Force and we are increasing the opportunities available to meet the challenge. Roles differ greatly depending on what volunteers want to gain from their experience. Currently in the Bourne, Stamford and Market Deeping area, there are several vacancies, including:
• Crime Callback Volunteer – to act as a point of contact between the police and vulnerable victims of crime. • ASB Callback Volunteer – to act as a point of contact between the police and vulnerable victims of ASB (anti-social behaviour). • Front Counter Volunteer – to staff the front counter at a police station and deal with enquiries by members of the public. • Police Cadet Leader – to provide training and support for police cadets. • Police Vehicle Cleaner – to help clean and maintain all police vehicles, including the equipment that they carry. Full details of these vacancies, and others offered around the county, can be found at www.lincs.police. uk/Join-Us/Volunteers/ To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. DO I NEED TO BRUSH MY DOG’S TEETH? Dentistry is an increasingly large part of veterinary work. It now seems that nearly every dog and cat requires at least one treatment, if not several, in their lifetimes. Why is this? Wild dogs and cats that catch sufficient wild food, generally have perfect teeth. The mouth contains millions of harmless bacteria. Things begin to go wrong when these beneficial bacteria are replaced with disease-producing ones. Some of these produce lactic acid, which then damages the teeth below the gum level. This is seen as gingivitis, which then produces the ideal environment for more diseaseproducing bacteria. Plaque that is seen in many dog and cat mouths is initially produced by the harmless bacteria. This plaque in the absence of gingivitis is not a problem and is really evidence that there is not sufficient abrasive action occurring over the teeth. There are several ways to achieve this necessary abrasive action. Owners are often told to brush their dog’s teeth (good luck with the cat!) This is undoubtedly a good thing to do, but the dog will need to be trained to accept this. Chewing is the answer. Dry biscuits do not produce this wear. The most efficient way to remove or reduce plaque is to chew on bones. These must be raw and of sufficient size and strength that whole bits of bone are not swallowed. Most dogs like a good marrow bone and will spend hours chewing one (just be careful to introduce these gradually or else too much raw marrow initially might cause some diarrhoea). Other useful products are raw cow’s trachea and large pieces of tendon. All these products can be found at most good pet stores and are nicely packaged by a company called “Nature’s Menu”. Other, more traditional, dog chews are helpful, but not so effective. “Dentistix” are also useful, but are less effective at removing plaque.
there is both individual and breed susceptibility. Diets that are high in sugar and carbohydrate produce the right environment for lactic acid, producing bacteria that lead to dental disease. There are many diets on the market now that have reduced sugar and carbohydrate. These are generally grain-free. Many owners and some vets are now seeing the beneficial effects of feeding a raw diet which includes bones. One last product that is useful at protecting your dog and cat’s gums when they are developing plaque is called “Plaque Off”. This is an unfortunate name as it is only slightly effective at removing plaque! This product contains iodine (in seaweed) and acts as an antiseptic around the gums, reducing the chance of bacterial disease. Animals on this product will still get plaque (unless chewing bones) but they are protected from gum disease.
Serious dental disease follows plaque build-up. Diet has a large part to play in this, although
With the right diet and some bone chewing, your pet should not need so many dental visits to your vet!
