Welcome to our December edition... Another Christmas fast approaching and the big switch-on of Bourne’s Christmas lights on November 28th nearly here. The programme of the day’s activities is included with this month’s issue of “Discovering Bourne”, and we hope that you will be able to enter the competitions, and enter into the true Christmas spirit. The talented singers, musicians and dancers who are performing will no doubt make it a memorable occasion for all concerned, and it is hoped that last year’s record turn-out will be exceeded this time around.

Our team of contributors continue to ensure that your favourite magazine is full of interesting features, advice and information to make your lead-up to Christmas as enjoyable as possible. Thanks to them all and, on behalf of us all on the magazine, let me wish you the very best for a merry and peaceful Christmas, with a healthy and successful 2016 to follow.

And so into the final month of the year and, as storms lash parts of Scotland, we can now feel re-assured by the Met. Office that every big storm coming our way in future will be given a name. opening of a new shop in Bourne, where The Three Counties Dog Rescue can continue their fantastic work, and a nostalgic glance back at the Christmas Fatstock Show. By heck, they knew how to enjoy themselves back then … singing “Who killed Cock Robin?” … after 110 bottles of Scotch – probably one of the revellers, by breathing on the poor bird! Quieter times these days, but nonetheless, plenty of Christmas and New Year fun to be had, and plenty of ideas in this month’s magazine to help it happen for you. Enjoy the read!

The Perfectly Iced

Christmas Cake

1

Take your fruit cake.

2

Warm apricot jam.

Brush the cake a small amount all over, enough to make sticky and ready to hold the almond paste.

5

6 Brush all over the almondpasted cake with cooled boiled water.

7

4

3

Place all over the cake and work the top and sides as before.

Knead and roll the white fondant icing, the same as you did with the almond paste.

Knead and roll the almond paste big enough to cover the cake all over. Place over the cake and gently press down and work the sides to stick to the cake.

8

9

Pipe around the bottom of the cake with royal icing.

Now decorate to your heart’s content!

Happy Christmas from

The Bourne Foodbank – What’s That All About Then? Approaching the Christmas period every year, it becomes very noticeable that there are many people within the community for whom the giving of gifts to others is going to prove extremely difficult, if not impossible. They are struggling themselves to put food on to their table, never mind buying presents for others. A foodbank is a centre for giving emergency food to those in crisis in our community and the Bourne foodbank, located in the United Reform Church Hall on Spalding Road, does just that – and more! The Bourne foodbank is part of a network founded by the Trussell Trust, a Christian Trust committed to self-sustaining community projects which tackle poverty and social exclusion in the UK, and is locally operated by the ‘Churches Together in Bourne’ team.

care professionals give foodbank vouchers to people in crisis, which can then be exchanged for three days of food. Foodbank volunteers are also willing to take time to listen and redirect individuals to other agencies when needed. If you are struggling, due to low income, sickness, unemployment, debt, benefit changes, etc. please obtain a food voucher from one of the following agencies : Citizens Advice Bureau, SKDC Customer Services, Bourne Children’s Centre, Health Visitors, Home Start, School Nurses, Salvation Army, Age UK and Toolbar. The Bourne Foodbank, now into its third very successful year, is open on Tuesday afternoons (1pm-3 pm) and Friday morning, (9am-11 am). Project Team Leader, Ann Parry-Jones, commented, “We are a very friendly group of volunteers who will offer you a cup of tea/coffee, biscuits and a chat if you feel like it, whilst we sort out the produce we can give you.”

Donations of non-perishable food are given by schools, churches, community groups and individuals, and volunteers sort and store the food. Frontline

Short … and very sweet! Amongst the feedback which came our way last month was the following, from a local father: “As a young family relatively new to Bourne (originally from Sleaford but have worked in London for 10 years) we find the magazine extremely useful for many purposes. We can find out what’s happening in the local area, learn about activities etc. that we can partake in and, if we need a plumber, they’re re in there too! Keep up the good work. People like you and the magazine are what makes a community a community.” Regards, Matt Short. Ed. – Thanks Matt. I think the community spirit is already here, as the forthcoming Christmas activities in Bourne will confirm. At the magazine, we do our little bit to let people know what’s occurring, but your taking the time out to express your gratitude, and particularly your willingness to become involved, is really what “community spirit” is all about.

Bourne’s Latest Gold Medallist- Claire Steels Bourne Town Harriers member and former Bourne Grammar School student, Claire Steels has achieved what must be one of the most extraordinary feats in any sporting field. Within barely ten months, Claire has not only mastered the requirements of the duathlon, (a 5km. run, a 20km. cycle ride, then a 2.5km. run), but has claimed a gold medal in her first international outing! At the World Championships in Adelaide, Australia, Claire’s performance, (tenth place in the ladies race overall), was good enough to strike gold in the 25-29 year-old age group. Huge congratulations go to Claire.

Novelist set to put Bourne on the literary map with “Sense and French Ability” Bourne’s standing on the national “literary map” has received a boost recently, with romantic novelist, Ros Rendle, moving to reside in the town, along with her husband and their dogs. Having previously worked as a head teacher, Ros has been used to writing policy documents, essays and stories to which young children enjoyed listening. Now she is involved in the much greater challenge of writing fiction for adults. She writes both historical sagas and contemporary romance; perfect for lying by a warm summer pool or curling up on a cosy sofa. Ros is a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, and still enjoys regular travel to France, having lived there permanently for the last ten years. From Endeavour Press, the UK’s leading independent publisher of digital books, Ros’s new book, “Sense and French Ability” is now available for download onto phone or tablet from www.amazon.co.uk.

Thank you... St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice would like to thank all the people, businesses and local groups such as Discovering Bourne who have helped and supported us throughout 2015. During the past year we have helped over 5,800 patients and their families living with a life limiting illness throughout Lincolnshire, and it is only with the generosity of people such as yourselves that we are able to do this. Many thanks to you all and best wishes for a happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.

It’s a Dog’s Life! – New Charity Shop coming to Bourne The Three Counties Dog Rescue are pleased to announce the opening of their first shop, in Bourne. It has been less than a year since a fire at the kennels claimed the lives of three Staffordshire bull terriers, Teal, Dave and Daisy. Although this year has been challenging, the team were determined to move forward in memory of those who lost their lives. For Gyll Mauchline, who runs the charity, the shop will also present a great opportunity to raise muchneeded funds, which can help to secure the longer term future of the charity, as Gyll explains. “Being a local charity, we are hoping that the shop will become a hub of activity within the community. It will be a great place to hold our regular fundraising events and, unlike many charities, 100% of all proceeds raised goes directly to the cause”. As well as being able to drop off donations and bag yourself a bargain, it will be a place for volunteer recruitment, and to receive information and advice about the charity itself. People will be able to view images and have preliminary discussions about any dog or cat of interest that might become their companion. Being able to interact in this way, and see close-up the benefits of any donation, is what we feel makes our charity special and unique. We are always keen to hear from volunteers who might like to help in the shop, or to join our proactive fund-raising group to help us raise the money we need to carry on caring for, and re-homing, any animal that comes to us.

For more information on the opening of the shop, or on becoming a volunteer, please e-mail to info@ threecountiesdogrescue.org, and keep in touch through the Three Counties Facebook page. For quality donations of Homeware ,Bric a Brac ,Books ,Clothes ,Shoes and Accessories, please call Janette “Happy Christmas on 07857911390 from Dexter, one

of Gyll’s 6,000 rescued dogs”

ABOUT THE THREE COUNTIES DOG RESCUE With over forty years dedicated to local animal welfare, Gyll Mauchline and her team of dedicated volunteers have successfully re-homed over six thousand animals. From their South Lincolnshire base, they work tirelessly in their mission to give unwanted cats and dogs a second chance at a new life. It is run entirely by voluntary and unpaid helpers, with every penny raised going directly into improving the lives of their cats and dogs. Gyll believes that, with your help, “we really can make a difference.” To find out more information about Three Counties and how you can help, please go to www. threecountiesgogrescue.org For all re-homing enquiries, please call Gyll on 07708589792 or 01778440318, (between 9am and 5pm - please leave a message and we will get back to you within forty-eight hours.)

1) Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? I was born in Stamford Hospital, and lived on a farm in Dyke with my sister and two brothers. I’ve got many fond memories of growing up in a fabulous village, being one of only ten children attending the village school, for instance, before it closed and I had to travel to Bourne Abbey Primary School. You knew everyone who lived in the village and we had so much freedom, playing near the Car Dyke. 2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? Many people have influenced me in my life, especially my family, friends and work colleagues and suppliers. My dad has always been there for me, and husband James is always very supportive. 3) Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? Anton Du Beke and Gary Barlow. Dancing with one, while listening to the other singing …who needs a meal?! Anton and I could also reminisce about the time we met!

Our lady in the “Hot Seat” in this month leading up to Christmas is, appropriately enough, someone whose services will be called upon more than ever right now. Many shoppers will be seeking those floral arrangements to beautify their homes during the festive season, alongside a wide range of Christmas gifts, decorations, wreaths and some charming wooden reindeer! Over two decades as a florist, and now into her eighteenth year as the owner of Bourne’s popular “Stephanies” in Crown Walk, Steph, (as she’s affectionately known, by almost everyone in the town, it seems) here looks back fondly on a very full life. Extraordinary dedication and hard work, allied with an artistic flair for her floral creations, has ensured an enviable reputation throughout the town and numerous villages. However, she modestly attributes much to her team of delightful and very supportive ladies (and a couple of young men) behind the scenes in the shop. Steph and husband James are extremely proud of their children Ben (15) and Gracie (11), whilst Charlie, the Cockerpoo puppy, continues to provide the stress-busting relaxation needed when the shop closes for another day! 20

D I S C O V E R I N G

4) How would you describe yourself in only five words? Bubbly, creative, caring, hard-working, independent … (although the word “stubborn” has been heard around the shop lately!) 5) If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why? I’d love the street market to come back to Bourne. I remember trying to rush back to school in my dinner hour, pushing past people in the street. The town was buzzing then. Oh yes, and the little cinema up the passageway on North Street, next to Smith’s. Let’s have that back. 6) What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”? Have more confidence in your own ability, and grab any opportunities that come your way. The world is your oyster!

– now a team effort to turn heads

S

ix months on from having featured Kirsty Woods and her ambitious plans for The Cutting Room in Bourne’s Crown Walk, it was a pleasure to see just how much progress has been made since midsummer.

First up is the fact that now, Kirsty has herself a team of stylists. Tyler Williamson, (22) has returned to Bourne with her star brightly glowing, and with her Facebook crammed with recommendations and so much positive feedback. Kirsty is delighted that she can now use Tyler’s success with the Balayage technique, with its soft natural highlights, to offer her many clients an even better service. She makes no apology for using Tyler’s popularity to target specifically the younger sections of the market. The other addition to the team in recent weeks has been seventeen year old Leona Bilby, who has just commenced a hairdressing course at Stamford’s New College. As an apprentice, Leona will be covering all aspects of the industry, and early indications Tyler’s balayage are very favourable indeed.

The Cutting Room

The summer revamp of Kirsty’s salon has meant improved lighting and a new floor and display units, all of which enhances what the team can now offer. A new product range Kirsty’s Easi-locks is also out there, with “Illumina Colors” from Wella proving to be an inspired choice. Six months ago, Kirsty had just instigated the first “Easilocks” hair-extension service for her clients, and was buzzing with excitement at the prospect. No other salon for miles around was, at the time, offering such a prestigious service, so it was no wonder that success was soon to be had, with some clients travelling as far as seventy miles to Bourne! Keeping those clients returning though, has been Kirsty’s next challenge, which, pleased to report, has been achieved. Kirsty continues her Facebook updates, showing her proud transformations of her clients, which serve to attract the public, both young and not-so-young alike.

Words from the Mayor Let me be the first to wish all the people of Bourne, not forgetting Dyke and Twenty, a joyful Christmas and a happy and peaceful 2016.

Let’s remember though that there are some in our local community who find this time of the year a very great challenge, especially the elderly and those with limited mobility, who feel a heightened degree of isolation and loneliness. Please give a thought for those of your neighbours in need, and make sure that they have the basics of warmth, food and company, as the weather becomes colder and the roads and pavements become icier. Think about the Bill Withers song, ‘Lean on me’. “Lean on me when you’re not strong

And I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on For it won’t be long ‘Til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.”

Maybe when we are lonely and infirm, we might be glad of someone who gives us some loving care and attention. The first of our Charity Pub Challenges, at The Masons went really well. My thanks to the Masons and all who attended, and we look forward to the next one in the Wishing Well in the New Year. Special thanks to a stranger in The Masons who, when I was evicting him from the pool table, asked what my charities were and put his hand in his pocket to offer a generous and unsolicited donation. I don’t know who you are … but thanks.

“Treats for my Sweet”

(or rather “one for you and two for me!”) “Christmas is coming and the wallet’s looking fat”. Well, as potential receivers of Christmas goodies, let’s hope so. The lemming-like dash will be dragging us towards Bourne’s wonderful shops, or maybe Queensgate, very soon, or more likely, to the wonderful world of Amazon! Before that, however, it’s worth remembering that, on the whole, we Brits are pretty spectacular at splashing out … on ourselves, (if recent research is to be believed!). A survey by VoucherCodes.co.uk found that British people spend an average of £62 per week on treats for themselves, with the impulse to succumb to the temptation peaking around lunchtime on a Saturday. Purchases range from expensive designer clothes and shoes, through bottles of wine to bars of chocolate, with men spending a third more per month than women.

26

D I S C O V E R I N G

The research found that people’s fondness for treats increased as the week went on, spending the least on Monday, gradually increasing up to the Saturday peak. The “most frivolous” of people, splashing out on treats once the money goes into their account, are found in Swansea, followed by the residents of Aberdeen and Belfast. The good folk of Wolverhampton, on the other hand, are the most cautious, with less than one in five splashing out on themselves on pay day. This research would seem to show how closely our mood and external lifestyle factors have such an impact on how we treat ourselves, as we head towards the weekend.

Wellhead Practice Excellence in head to toe Complementary Healthcare

Bourne Chiropody & Podiatry

Here are some of the most common foot conditions treated in practice What is a Podiatrist/ Chiropodist? A health professional who diagnoses and treats the huge variety of foot problems in both adults and children. Podiatrist & Chiropodist are the ONLY titles protected under British law. They are regulated by the Health Care Professions Council. Before having your feet treated, it is wise to check that your Podiatrist is genuine. After all, anyone can advertise and charge for treating your feet but would you let anyone loose on your teeth, back, eyes and health who was not a dentist, osteopath, optometrist or doctor? You can check the online register at http://www. hpc-uk.org/check/ or telephone them. They are there to make sure you are in safe hands. Ingrown toenails These occur when one or both sides of your nail grow into, and pierce the skin of, your toe. Cutting your nails too short or wearing tightfitting shoes is rarely the cause. More commonly as we age,

the nail curvature increases and starts to dig in (involution). The foot shape, way you walk, length of your toes are all factors. Many Podiatrists can operate with local anaesthesia, to cure the problem. Corns and Calluses These are very commonly seen. They are caused by your own body weight placing localised pressure over small areas of your feet. They often accompany other underlying problems such as hallux valgus (bunions) or hammer toe deformity. A corn is a localized thickening of the skin due to pressure. Corns often occur on the top of the toes where there is pressure from the shoes. However, they also occur at the sole of the foot and in between toes. Certain corns may become entwined with the nerves of the skin, these corns are particularly painful.

Tinea pedis or athlete’s foot This is a skin infection caused by a fungus. The fungus causing infection prefers moist, warm skin; this is why tinea pedis favours the folds between the toes and is often worse in hot weather. You can get a dry skin form that causes peeling . Your Podiatrist can identify and treat this. Fungal Nails (Onychomycosis) Invasive fungal infections of the nail. The fungus that causes Athlete’s Foot can invade the toe nails. This is uncommon in the young and far more common as we age. White streaks in the nail can be the early presentation, then a thickening and brown “tobacco streaked” appearance. It can be treated but is often mis -diagnosed.

Cruising – Leave it to Clare at Travel Counsellors We work closely with many of the world’s best cruise lines to bring the best voyages to you. Our partnerships ensure we have access to competitive prices and, coupled with my personal service, your cruise holiday will be just as you want it. Whether it is sumptuous luxury, open-ocean cruising, something a little different with a river or niche cruise, or an escape for the whole family, I’ll be able to match the right cruise to you. Cruising is more than just a holiday. It’s an indulgent getaway, a gourmet dining experience. It can be action-packed family fun, an opportunity to learn, maybe an excuse to dance the night away or to marvel at glitzy West End shows. When you choose to cruise, you open yourself to a whole new world of destinations and fabulous ships that will truly take your breath away. With so many options, it takes time to choose the perfect voyage and I will work with you to find the type of holiday that is right for you. I’m completely independent and have close, personal relationships with the world’s best cruise lines. This means I have access to the industry’s best technology for competitive prices and the broadest range of itineraries. It also means that I can package up whatever you desire… pre-cruise hotel stays, post-cruise

adventures, exciting excursions in the incredible destinations you’ll be visiting, flight upgrades, transfers included, a cruise-stay-cruise package. Whatever it is you want from your holiday, let me create it all for you … from start to finish.

My Top Tips For Cruising

• Not all ships are the same different ones suit different people. Take advice from a specialist! • Do your research and go with a cruise line that provides what you’re looking for e.g. a cookery school, dance classes or themed cruises. • Pick the right ship for you and your party with expert guidance. You need

to know what to expect, particularly if you haven’t cruised before. • Take the correct clothing for the season. • Freedom dining is a good option on some ships, as you don’t feel tied to a time for eating. • Many ports have local taxis that can be shared with other passengers and are great value. • There is a ship for everyone, and compare the overall price – don’t be guided by the cheapest or advertised prices. • When choosing a cabin, look to see what is around it, e.g. is the nightclub below you? A cabin near lifts/stairs may be convenient, but expect a high footfall past your door. I would love the opportunity to help plan your next cruise holiday, It can include as much or as little as you wish and be as unique as you are.

Cherry Holt Garden Centre - "It's All Happening …!"

I

f you go down to the Cherry Holt Garden Centre, you’re in for a big surprise! One new business has started up there; an established one is being invigorated; a popular car-wash has re-located on to the site; the café at the front, with a new owner, has been re-furbished; whilst the construction and erection of sheds goes from strength to strength. Exciting times indeed, and owner Jackie Markley, along with sons, Chris and Kevin, is eager to see their ambition and imagination rewarded, once the people of Bourne and the surrounding area realise the scale of what is being attempted. “Enthusiasm” could be Beverley Shilling’s middle name! This local lady is now the proprietor of “Encore”, which offers not only shabby-chic and personalised furniture, but also retro, vintage and pre-loved ladies’ clothing and accessories. Within the Garden Centre itself, Bev’s studio is starting to bulge already with garments. Amongst the famous labels are David Emanuel and Frank Usher, alongside Oasis, Monsoon and other High Street favourites. Quality pre-loved gowns, jackets, coats, blouses, (for both evening or for work wear), shoes and

handbags are very sensibly priced. All sizes and ages of lady are catered for, from size eight up to thirty, from age eighteen to eighty! To complement the clothes, all of which are in very good condition, is a collection of jewellery, much of which confirms Bev’s love for all things old and perhaps a little quirky. This same desire to offer quality vintage items can be seen in the shabby-chic section, where Bev’s passion and artistic talent sees her transform pieces of furniture into unique creations, as either her hand-painting or decoupage skills come into play. She can put her skills to work on any item which the customer might own and want to have transformed. “Fantasy furniture” for a child’s bedroom is proving very popular already, be it Batman or Disney

characters, chosen to personalise a stool or perhaps a chest of drawers. The prices for Beverley’s creations are particularly competitive. Around the studio are many paintings, both watercolours and acrylics, which are the work of Julie Lake and Elaine Hitchen. Add to this an attractive display of collectables, from glassware, vintage china, through to jugs and plates, and the overall impression is one of affordable quality. Opening times vary, please call the garden centre for details.

after-sales service, there are many very satisfied customers in this part of the country. I count myself as one of them, with the recent acquisition of a mighty “man-cave”, which has kick-started our own re-designing of the garden project. The Cherry Holt Garden Centre offer an impressive range of “hard landscaping” products, from patios and driveways, raised beds and pergolas to bespoke gates and fencing. My eyes were drawn to the made-to-measure planters in pastel shades and also the unusual 3D planter range.

It was in 2009 when the Cherry Holt Garden Centre first appeared, run by Jackie and her husband, Ray. The site was formerly the “Traditional Ironware” foundry, which had closed down five years earlier. Remnants of the days of iron working remain, as you saunter around the grounds, with benches, models and artefacts which catch the eye. Following Ray’s death in 2011, sons Chris and Kevin turned their attention more towards the construction and erection of garden sheds, leaving the actual stocking of plants and shrubs a little in limbo. Now, with the able assistance of Denny, Jackie is able to plan for the future with confidence. There will be much on display in the weeks leading up to Christmas, and then 2016 will see large-scale restocking. The much sought-after Clover all-purpose compost, however, remains as big a seller as ever.

To add to this feeling of “all-change”, we see the recent arrival on to the spacious Garden Centre car park of the Eurowash. Seven years ago, behind the County Car Auctions site, a little further along Cherry Holt Road, this business was first launched. Now, the hard-working, cleaning crew have more space and can still offer very competitive prices and a smile, as they keep Bourne’s cars sparkling clean. Plans are underway to offer a scratchcard offer for 2016, (details to follow).

The shed and garden furniture “arm” of the Cherry Holt Garden Centre is thriving. Coupling a superb, quality product, manufactured to the customer’s requirements, with the efficient and careful erection and

The “Oasis” café fronts on to the roadside, but, as befits its name, it provides a calm, relaxing atmosphere as you sit with your traditional cooked breakfast, your mid-morning coffee or your lunchtime meal. A new coffee machine stands proudly offering a range of different types of coffee. Home cooking at its best, and a very competitive price, prove an attraction for many regulars. The recent refurbishment, involving the walls being re-painted, has brightened up the place, to match the chirpy chatter of the ambitious owner as he shares with me his future plans.

The Stall: as a lot of pickpockets work in pairs, they will identify their victim and one person will deliberately stand in front you, at a counter, getting on a train or bus etc., and will stall for some reason - the other person is directly behind the victim allowing them to get up close to carry out the crime The Concealed Hand: pickpockets often use items such as a newspaper to cover their hand whilst they carry out the crime Remember to be extra vigilant in crowded shops and whilst in queues. Wishing you all a safe and Happy Christmas from Safe Local Trades.

The Countdown to Christmas! Seasonal advice from the decorating experts

December isn’t just about Advent calendars, buying presents and sending cards…. For many households, it is the last chance to prepare the house for the big day, which usually means a big clean, re-arrangement of furniture to accommodate the tree and then a trip into the loft to get all the decorations down, followed by a shopping trip to add to the collection! If, like many you’ve been leisurely decorating throughout the year, then December is the month when everyone frantically tries to finish off those last few jobs – touching up the walls, putting up the pictures, finishing the tiling and, for some… getting new carpets fitted! The television adverts are awash with feel-good family scenes in immaculate and beautifully decorated homes, with companies promising delivery before Christmas. All this adds to the pressure of finishing those last minute DIY jobs and decorating tasks as soon as December kicks in. If you are hoping for some wise words – me, telling you not to worry and not to get sucked into the chaos of it all, I’m afraid I can’t help you – I too, am one of those people rushing around preparing for the big day. On the up-side at least, there are plenty of ways to make it easier on yourself; you can hire a cleaner, a decorator, an odd job man (check out ‘The Directory’ at the back of the magazine) and even an interior designer. But, for those of you without that luxury budget or, if you just prefer the personal touch, then try not to get stressed, enjoy it, make it fun and do it all with a glass of mulled wine or a mince pie in hand – I find that makes most tasks enjoyable! Here’s some Christmas inspiration from your local home decorating centre - Stringer’s. The team there will be able to answer all your paint and wallpaper queries. All items available from Stringer’s Home Decorating Centre, perhaps not the mulled wine and mince pies though !!!

Paint, wallpaper, decorating tools, garden furniture, homeware and inspiration - you’ll find everything you need at Stringers Home Decorating Centre t: 01778 422420 e: mail@stringersdiy.com Manning Road, Bourne, Lincolnshire PE10 9HW

How to Use Windows File History to Backup Your User Data Backing up your data is extremely important as a hardware crash of your disk drive can result in the loss of valuable images and documents. There are many backup solutions available but what some people do not realise is that Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 include a very good backup facility without the need to purchase additional software. This is called File History. Here’s how to set this up for use: In the search bar at the bottom your screen, type in File History.

Set the various options to match what you would like to do (the default options should be fine for most users). Click Save.

Click on File History in the results.

The backup is automated and runs in the background without you having to do anything. Note too that this is a version controlled backup in that it will retain multiple versions of the same document. Handy if you want to restore a document that you update regularly to an earlier point in time.

After a short delay, whilst the tool searches for your disk drives, you will see something like this.

File backups are best done to an external disk drive rather than to the same system disk drive fitted inside your PC. This is because any disk crash could result in the loss of the main data and the backup if they are on the same device. By putting the data backup on a separate drive, this can be avoided. Click on Advanced Settings on the left panel. IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk

Click on the Turn On button to initiate the backup Windows will now backup your user data on a schedule as defined in the settings (so in this example every hour).

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

“Ain’t no sunshine when it’s gone” The government has proposed drastic cuts to Solar Feed-in Tariffs from January 2016. Read on, to find out why now could be your last chance to secure a return on your investment. Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate. This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return. However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) propose that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments could see drastic cuts in 2016. The Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations could be cut by as much as 87%. All bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely by the proposed cuts. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019. If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay-back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of

December 31st will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh! Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes. We can install solar panels on your home in under two weeks, from initial enquiry to final handover, so there is still time to take advantage of the current FiT tariff. As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond.

advice from Double and Megson

Getting on to the Property Ladder A number of affordable housing schemes exist to help people on lower incomes to get on to the property ladder.

Shared ownership

Whether the property is a house or a flat, if you own it on a shared ownership basis, you own a leasehold interest in the property. Under the terms of the lease, you own a percentage of the property, paying rent to the landlord (normally a Housing Association) on the percentage that you do not own. You have the option to buy further shares in the property (known as “staircasing) and, provided your lease allows it, you can staircase up to 100% ownership. When buying a shared ownership lease, it is important to fully understand the terms of the lease and your responsibilities, especially when it comes to staircasing or selling the property, as there are set procedures to follow. It is also important to know whether there is any future liability for Stamp Duty Land Tax, and this depends on how the original leaseholder elected to pay Stamp Duty Land Tax when the lease was granted.

Shared equity

Under a shared equity scheme, you own 100% of

the interest in the property, whether this is freehold or leasehold, but in addition to your mortgage, you will have an equity loan from the builder. This means that the builder provides a percentage of the purchase price (usually up to 20%) which is secured against the property. A number of trigger events exist which result in the loan becoming repayable before the end of the term. The amount to be repaid at the relevant time is linked to the value of the property. Both schemes are acceptable to certain mortgage lenders, but they have stringent requirements with which to comply, in respect of these schemes. If you are buying under an affordable housing scheme, you can be sure that your legal representative at Double and Megson has the experience necessary to guide you through the complexities of the schemes and the associated paperwork to ensure that you understand your rights and obligations.

Wishing all our customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

Independent Tax Revisited Changes to the tax system now and in 2016 mean that it is time for couples to review their tax planning Previously the majority of retirees would buy an annuity, so firstly I will explain what that is. When independent tax for married couples was introduced 25 years ago, it prompted a flurry of tax planning, as husbands and wives rearranged their financial affairs to reduce their tax bills. Now, another set of tax changes have brought the focus back to independent tax, which also applies to civil partners. The starting rate band. This tax band applies to savings income (mainly interest). For 2015/16, this

band is £5,000 and the tax rate is 0%. Unfortunately, many taxpayers are unable to exploit this apparent generosity because their earnings/ pension income is too high. The personal savings allowance. From 2016/17 this will give basic rate taxpayers an allowance of £1,000 to set against their savings income. Higher rate taxpayers will receive a £500 allowance, but additional rate taxpayers receive nothing. The allowance’s

arrival will lead banks and building societies to pay deposit interest without deduction of tax from April 6th 2016. The dividend allowance also comes into being next tax year. The first £5,000 of dividend income will be free of personal tax, regardless of the tax rate paid on other income. In theory, in 2016/17 a couple could each have total income of £22,000 before paying any tax, although it would need to be a particular mix of income. Do Animals Have Souls? My wife grew up with dogs and cats as part of the family. I have seen photos of her and a cairn terrier in a pram together, sharing a biscuit. When this dog died, she was obviously very upset. While talking about this in her school, her teacher informed her that the dog would not go to heaven, as animals do not have souls. Why should it be that one animal called Homo Sapiens, who has a shared evolution with all mammals, whose recent evolution came from apes, should be the only one to have a soul? Is it that we are the most intelligent? Are we the only animal that has feelings? Are human feelings the only ones that count? I have spent all my life associated with animals, and I find that generally, we underestimate our animals. They are more intelligent and have more ability to feel and understand than we realise. I have seen my dogs, cats and horses mourn the loss of a pack/ herd member. I regularly see the joy in animals when they are reunited with their owners after being separated. Most animals, like young children, do not worry about the future, and only use the past to react to similar situations. They do not waste time contemplating the past or future, but live in the moment,( a condition called enlightenment.)

There is an area in our brain that is responsible for this and gives us a ‘God-like’ or out of body experience when stimulated. It is this huge imagination that has allowed us to begin to understand our universe, has resulted in wondrous works of art and the modern world with medicine, air travel, communication etc. This imagination has also brought Hitler’s extermination of the Jews, the terrible atrocities in the Middle East and the greed now commonly seen in our world. Whether we accept it or not, we have to share this planet with all living things. In fact our future relies on it. We also have to share our ability to have souls.

Homo Sapiens is different from other animals in having a huge imagination and an ability for cultural evolution.

Many Happy Returns – (if you follow this advice!) Over the festive season, it is estimated that £2.4billion is spent on unwanted Christmas gifts. Shops are under no legal obligation to exchange or refund a gift unless it was faulty when bought, it is not as described, or it is not fit for purpose. If it doesn’t fit you properly or you just don’t like the gift you received, you have no automatic right to return it. If the gift you have purchased is faulty, you have a statutory right to a refund or replacement, whether the goods were bought in a shop or from a market stall .The Sale of Goods Act says the goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. You may come up against opposition when trying to return faulty goods, for example being told a receipt is always required, or being advised by the retailer to contact the manufacturer. If a product is faulty, a proof of purchase will suffice (perhaps a bank statement), and don’t be persuaded to go to the manufacturer … the retailer is responsible. If you want to return something just because you don’t like it, you don’t need it or it doesn’t fit, the retailer has no legal obligation to take it back or refund you. Many retailers have returns policies that allow you, the customer, to take items back and get refunds,

exchanges or vouchers as long as the items returned are unused and in perfect condition with their undamaged original packaging. The individual store’s return policy should be checked, as some products may be excluded from the returns policy, for example for hygiene reasons, or the store may impose time limits for returning non-faulty products. At Christmas, some retailers offer special extended refund periods, meaning you may have longer than you think. A stores-return-policy is usually displayed on receipts, on signs in-store or online. Shops don’t have to have a returns policy, but if they have one, they must stick to it. If you buy goods on the internet, you have the same rights as if you were shopping on the high street. In addition, you have the right to a seven-day cooling-off period from the date you receive the goods, with the right to a full refund regardless of the reason for return. However, this doesn’t apply in some situations, for example if the goods were personalised for you, were perishable, or are not in the same condition as when they were delivered. Before ordering, ensure you check the terms and conditions very carefully.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Seasons Greetings from Big Tom! Wishing all readers of my motoring section a happy and peaceful Christmas As 2015 comes to a close, I look back at a very exciting year and anticipate more wonderful experiences for customers of my driving school. I have been very fortunate to witness dozens of happy customer relationships with pupils and their family members. My driving school is set to continue expanding in the areas that we serve, and with the necessary personnel to satisfy the growing need. Personally, I continue to strive to offer the best driving tuition for my customers by keeping standards high, my own CPD

up-to-date, and the goals in the BIG TOM Customer Charter ever present. The safety of our customers has always been, and will continue to be, the number one priority. If I had three wishes for the New Year, they would be for all drivers to….. • Add just five minutes to their planned journey time. • Drive like they did when they passed their driving test. • Adapt their driving to reflect changing driving conditions. Lastly, big congratulations to all my customers who have passed their driving test this year … and stay safe!

| A little bit of History

Discovering. . . the Christmas Fatstock Show

Christmas has become a season of over indulgence and Dickensian scenes of tables groaning under the weight of turkeys and joints of roast beef are a reminder of the way many families celebrated in Victorian times. In those days, freshly slaughtered carcasses of cows, sheep and pigs were hung outside butchers’ shops as an advertisement together with chickens and turkeys, pheasants, partridges, rabbits and hares that had just been shot on nearby estates while large charts adorned the walls inside showing the anatomy of the animals divided into sections with a key indicating the best cuts. But today this is considered unacceptable by the public who prefer their meat, fowl and game offered in sanitised plastic wrapping with no indication as to the source. In past times, there were no such niceties and the animals and birds that had been fattened ready for slaughter by local farmers and breeders were paraded for public show and sale at the Bourne Christmas Fatstock Show where butchers could bid for the best

on offer in readiness for public sale at the festive season. The show was a feature of farming life in Bourne from the 19th century when the town had a thriving weekly cattle market and continued for more than 100 years. In 1886 there were 230 entries including 68 beasts, 90 sheep, 10 pigs and 62 poultry, and all were bought for good prices and intended for the Christmas trade, the buyers being local butchers and game dealers who usually sold everything they bought in the run up to the festive season at a time when the population of Bourne was only 3,760 (1881 census). The show continued to thrive into the 20th century and an annual dinner serving a mixture of meats became part of the tradition, firstly at the Nag’s Head Inn, when it was kept by James

Shilcock, one time show secretary, and later across the road in the long room at the Angel Hotel, where on one occasion, 106 diners consumed a gargantuan meal with 110 bottles of Scotch. These convivial occasions always ended with the singing of Who Killed Cock Robin? The event was suspended during the Second World War from 1939-45 but resumed in 1954 until the cattle market closed in 1982. The location switched to Stamford for a spell but the foot and mouth epidemic of 2001 sounded the death knell and the following year the Bourne Christmas Fatstock Show was finally wound up. | Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Be Safe at Christmas For a dishonest few, the festive season is a time of criminal opportunity. Homes are left unoccupied, expensive presents are often there for the taking and, with a sense of wellbeing, your guard may well be down. By being aware of the risks and taking a few simple precautions you can prevent theft in the first place – and get on with enjoying the festive season. Christmas security tips • It’s obvious, but don’t leave gifts on display under the Christmas tree for days on end. Passers-by can see your presents under the tree. Keep the goodies locked away until the last moment. • Expecting a gift delivery? Make sure there is someone at home to receive it or a neighbour who can look after it until you return, rather than having it left on the doorstep. • Leave putting your gift boxes or wrapping outside for the refuse collectors until the last moment, as it announces to thieves that goods worth stealing are inside the house. • If you are hiding larger and more expensive gifts until Christmas Day, make sure they are fully secure. For example, make sure that a bicycle hidden in your shed is padlocked securely.

If you’re going away • Many people spend part of the Christmas period visiting friends or relatives. Burglars are always looking for properties that appear unoccupied. • Cancel the milk, newspapers and any other deliveries. • Don’t leave expensive presents on show. • Buy a couple of timers for lights and the radio. • Be wary of changing your answer phone message or setting up e-mail auto responder messages that can be connected to your address. • Don’t tweet or Facebook that you’re going away. • Lock doors, windows, sheds and outbuildings. • Set the ringtone on your landline as low as possible, or off.

• Leave a key with a neighbour who can stop by occasionally and check everything is alright.

If you suspect burglary at a neighbour’s property • If you are keeping an eye on a neighbour’s property over the Christmas period and you see evidence there has been a break-in, do not enter the house – the burglar may still be inside and you may disturb evidence. Call the police and try to contact your neighbour.

Christmas shopping safety tips • The growth of smartphones, mobiles, e-readers and tablets means many of us now walk around with hundreds of pounds’ worth of electronic gadgetry on us. Add to that Christmas present purchases and you can see why the festive season is so fruitful for pickpockets and thieves. • Pickpockets love crowds, so be extra careful when doing your Christmas shopping (and in the New Year sales). • Keep handbags zipped at all times, with purses at the bottom. Don’t leave wallets in back pockets. • Never leave valuables on show in your car. Lock them in the boot. • While supermarket shopping, don’t leave handbags or anything else valuable in the trolley while you’re off scanning the shelves. • Be aware of anyone standing too close to you at the ATM, as they may be reading your PIN number. Shield the keypad with your hand as you type it in.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
