Welcome to our February edition... So, farewell “Dry January”, and that de-tox wasn’t too bad after all, was it? … for some! This month, we’re expecting the worst of the winter weather, if the “old wives tales” and the Met. Office are to be believed, so make sure you’re well wrapped up and everything is in place for a fabulous Valentine’s

Day. We’ve plenty of ideas, (many associated with food!) in your favourite magazine, to make it a truly memorable one, especially with it being a Leap Year! Ladies, don’t forget to seize your opportunity to make an honest man out of him, by popping the question on the 29th. Fellas … don’t say you haven’t been warned!

You know “it’s a rum ol’ do”, as they say on the fens, when a field is yellow over with daffodils in late December, but that’s just what happened recently near Holbeach. 2016 is a Leap Year – what’s that all about then?

A leap year has 366 days, as opposed to a common year, which has only 365. Nearly every four years is a leap year, and we add a leap day, an extra – or intercalary – day, on February 29th.

Leap Day Customs and Traditions

Why do we have Leap Years? Leap years are needed to keep our modern day Gregorian calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds – to circle once around the sun. This is called a tropical year. However, the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn’t add a day on February 29th nearly every four years, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. After only one hundred years, our calendar would be off by approximately twenty-four days!

Which years are Leap Years?

Women propose to their men According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men – and not just the other way around – every four years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar. Twelve Pairs of Gloves In some places, Leap Day has been known as “Bachelors’ Day” for the same reason. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day. In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman’s proposal on February 29th has to buy her twelve pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.

In the Gregorian calendar, three criteria must be taken into account to identify leap years: ❱ The year is evenly divisible by four; ❱ If the year can be evenly divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless; ❱ The year is also evenly divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year. This means that 2000 and 2400 are leap years, while 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 are NOT leap years. 4

Bourne Lady in New Year’s Honours List Dorothy Alexander, 94, from Bourne, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the community. Originally from Montreal in Canada, she moved to England with her RAF husband and settled in Bourne in 1946. Looking for ways to make new friends, she joined the Women’s Institute and soon became a key figure, serving in many roles on the committee and helping with programmes such as Meals on Wheels. Dorothy also worked with the old Bourne Youth Club that met in the Vestry Hall on North Street, and was later involved in the negotiations with Lincolnshire

County Council that led to the creation of Bourne Youth Centre on Queens Road. She was chairman of the Management Committee from 1986 to 2013. She was also one of the founder members of Bourne Bridge Club, serving as treasurer for many years, and continues to attend regularly.

Thurlby Man in Marathon Challenge for MS-UK Glenn Martin tells his story: I am fortunate enough to be running the London Marathon in 2016, to raise awareness and funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, “MS-UK”, who have provided fantastic support to my sister, Sarah, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, six years ago. There are currently around 100,000 people in the UK who live with this disease, and I would love to be able to raise funds

to support this charity who I feel are committed to ensuring every individual is treated with care and dignity. Chernobyl – Thirty Years on … Help is still needed The very name still conjures up horrific memories for many of us who listened and watched, as the details of the world’s worst nuclear accident unfolded on to our screens on April 26th, 1986. Next month, we will be carrying a feature which involves a local couple who will be working wonders as a “host family” for the “Friends of Chernobyl’s Children” Charity. As a key part of their fundraising, (the target for which is £1,000), a Charity Ball is to be held at the Copperfield Suite, The Angel Hotel in Bourne on Saturday March 12th, 7pm until

midnight. Tickets are £28.50 and include a three course meal, a live band and a silent auction (with some fun thrown in for good measure!).

The food you consume can have a direct impact on your sex life, affecting your hormones, brain chemistry and energy and stress levels. Some foods have psychoactive properties, others arouse because they are psychologically suggestive, and some can actually increase blood flow to the genitals.

ASPARAGUS

An English herbalist from the 17th century, Nicholas Culpepper, wrote that asparagus “stirs up lust in man and woman.” It is a great source of potassium, fibre, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, thiamin and folic acid.

Throughout the centuries, almonds were regarded as fertility symbols. The aroma of almond supposedly arouses passion in females and provides high doses of vitamin E, magnesium and even fibre.

Fitness levels are increased, excess fat diminishes and a new and improved body shape will start to be revealed! As I write this, we have yet to have the usual frosts and snow that winter brings, but we do have the promise of a cold snap and possibly some snow. With this in mind, February may prove to be a pretty cold month but, who knows? The end of the winter months may still prove to be the warmest on record. More than any other month, you need to watch the local conditions and act accordingly. Don’t always do what the seed packet says; make a judgement, depending on the ground conditions as you don’t want all of your seeds to rot.

t has been very wet and, although it is possible to sow crops such as broad beans along with early 15:03 peas, parsnips and garlic, only do so if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Parsnips do not germinate easily, so a later sowing when the soil is warmer may help. To warm up the soil for planting next month, cover it with fleece or polythene and, if you haven’t already, add well-rotted manure or compost to the prepared soil. Shallots can be planted in shallow drills about seven inches apart so that the tips are just showing; water and keep weed-free. A large variety of seeds can be sown indoors such as broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage –to name but a few. All of your seed potatoes for the year should have been purchased by the end of this month and spread out in egg boxes or seed trays for “chitting” in a cool, light room. It is recommended to remove all but three of the “chits”, as it is believed that this produces larger potatoes. The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. Another job that can be done is to spray fruit trees, whilst they are still dormant, with a plant-oil based winter wash to help prevent aphids and scale insects. If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch. Happy gardening!

Tread carefully with “The Bank of Mum and Dad”! With the average first time buyer needing at least £16,000 deposit, it’s not surprising that many parents and even grandparents are helping by loaning or giving money towards the purchase of a property. The combination of family members and large sums of money can sometimes be fraught with problems. Before making that gift or loan, there are several matters that need to be considered :If the buyer is having a mortgage to fund the purchase, most mortgage lenders prefer that the deposit money is a gift to the buyer. They usually ask for a letter from those making the gift confirming that the money does not need to be repaid. Whether you gift or loan the money to help buy the property, then the funds will need to be brought to the mortgage company’s attention, ideally from the start of the mortgage application process.

If the money is to be a gift

If you were to die within seven years of making the gift, inheritance tax may need to be paid on that gift. How would you feel if your child co-habited, their relationship came to an end and the ex-partner sought to claim an interest in the property, which your child had purchased from the monies you had gifted? Are you happy for further loans to be secured on the property? What if your child got into financial difficulties and the property was repossessed?

How do you want that loan protected? Do you require interest to be added to the money loaned? Is your child going to make monthly repayments? What would happen if you fell out

with your child and they refused to pay you back what had been loaned? Do you require a Charge to be registered against the property? This means you will be repaid out of the sale proceeds if the house is ever sold? Many parents believe that no protection is required and they will make their own private family arrangement. The problem with family arrangements is that people rarely plan for, or like to even consider the possibility of, future problems.

Lambs of Stamford set to Close Down One of Stamford’s most established and popular firms is to cease trading early in April. The gap created by the loss of both Lambs China, Glass and Cookware on St. Mary’s Street, and Lambs Hardware on St Peter’s Street will be enormous, bringing to a sad end almost seven decades of high quality trading. Rogue traders cause misery for thousands of people each year; most of whom are the elderly and vulnerable in our communities. These uninvited traders call at properties offering to do home maintenance work, such as roofing, tarmacing and paving, garden and tree surgery, insulation, general building work, installing burglar alarms and other services. The work or service offered can sometimes be unnecessary, overpriced, of a poor standard or not done at all. First Impressions Count! Nine times out of ten, a buyer’s first impression is created by the selection of images that is found on “Rightmove” and “Zoopla”. No one wants to admit that, when searching for the right property online, they will be quick to disregard a property if the images are poor. Whether that is a poor quality image or, in fact, just a cluttered room. In today’s fast-paced property market, the way you present your property is key to selling your home and achieving the best possible price. Here are a few of my tips that I have picked up along the way: The Main Shot This is the first image people see. Take time to wash the front door, especially if you live on one of the new estates. If there is enough space, add a pot plant to either side of the front door and tidy up any hedges or bushes in the front garden. This will show straight away that you care for your home and it will look inviting to potential buyers.

Kitchen Shot This is one of the key images that buyers look for - a room that can make or break someone’s decision to purchase. Make sure that the surfaces are tidy and de-cluttered. Don’t leave the breakfast bowls in the sink or the dish cloth on the side. Living Room, Dining Room and Study Shots When including these images, make sure any televisions are turned off, cushions are straight and the tables are cleared of magazines and clutter. Create the sense of space by removing bulky furniture, if it isn’t meant to be in the room. Bedroom Shots I’m sure this one is obvious, but I still come across some images with the beds not made. It is important to make sure that any wardrobe doors shut properly and that all clothes are away. Remove the laundry basket as well, if you can. External Shots Make your garden as attractive as possible. Pick up any stray footballs and move anything that will detract from the image.

2015 - Year of the Scam! If there was a “financial boom” in 2015, it was undoubtedly in the world of scamming! Fraudsters are traditionally one step ahead of the game. By the time the victims alert the authorities and they become headline news, these criminals are well into their next “con”. The victims usually never meet the person who has duped them, and the internet provides a brand new “Pandora’s Box” of smoke and mirrors and cruel deception. Unfortunately, people duped often feel embarrassed and stupid at being taken in. Consequently, many do not report the fraud, and the numbers are much greater than official figures show. New data, produced by Financial Fraud Action UK (FFA), revealed that, increasingly, the fraudsters are attempting to target individuals directly, putting much of the responsibility on not being scammed on self-vigilance and policing. This data also gave figures for prevented fraud - banks and credit card companies’ systems prevented a total of £910.9m fraud in the first six months of 2015.

There is an increasing number of property scams, where tenants are purporting to be the owners of some very valuable properties and selling to an innocent buyer. The fraudsters are looking for unmortgaged, high-value properties where the actual owner does not live locally, and are prepared to spend a lot of time and effort in carrying through their, often complicated, plans. Occasionally, the Land Registry gets suspicious when the transaction is being reported, but by this time the money is usually in an offshore bank account and lost forever. In one such case, the Daily Mail journalist Max Hastings was targeted and his wife’s West London house was “sold” for £1.35 million with the funds ending up in a Dubai bank account before anyone was any the wiser. The Land Registry was suspicious, so the sale was never registered and Mrs Hastings kept her house. In December, more than eighty people were convicted of the UK’s biggest “crash for cash” insurance scam after making more

than £760,000 of bogus claims. The criminals faked twenty-eight road accidents and made false insurance claims. Another gang was convicted of a scam that managed to collect more than £600,000 from eighteen elderly victims by pretending to be the police, claiming the victim’s bank cards are being used fraudulently, telling them to phone their bank and get the money into a “safe” account. The criminals stay on the line, pose as bank officials, and get the victim to transfer the money into their own accounts. More than £23.6m was lost this way in 2014! The FFA has issued guidelines to try and make the fraudsters’ life a little more difficult. The important things to remember are that it takes two people (either end) to terminate a call. If in doubt, use a different phone line or mobile, and contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve been stung. Don’t worry about being embarrassed, silly or even wrong. It’s your money. Nobody is going to have a greater interest in protecting it than you!

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Domestic Abuse Domestic abuse and its effect on the victim I find disgusting, in that someone can abuse another who they allegedly ‘love’, in order to gain control. From December 29th 2015, the law was changed to close the gap around patterns of coercive and controlling behaviour as domestic abuse. Police are now expected to recognise, record and investigate offences under s.76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015, namely any pattern of incidents of “coercive” and “controlling” behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over in an intimate or family relationship. “Controlling behaviour” is a range of acts designed to make a person subordinate and/ or dependent, by isolating them from sources of support, exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain, depriving them of the means needed for independence, resistance and escape, and regulating their everyday behaviour. “Coercive behaviour” is acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim. This definition includes so called “honour-based violence”, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage, and is clear that victims are not confined to one gender or ethnic group. Domestic abuse can take place anywhere, not just in the home. Research has shown that it is rarely a one-off event. Abuse tends to happen more and more over time - each time getting more serious. Whatever the extent of the violence, the abuse almost always leaves those suffering it to feel frightened, isolated, humiliated or ashamed. Types of abuse can include, but are not restricted to:

• Monitoring their time (even in the toilet). • M onitoring a person via online communication tools or spyware. • C ontrolling aspects of everyday life i.e. where they go, who they see, what they wear, when they sleep. • D epriving access to support services, specialist support or medical services. • Control of finances – punitive allowances. • Threats to harm or kill. • Threats to harm another e.g. a child. • T hreats to reveal, share or publish private information. • Assaults, rape. • C riminal damage – destruction of household goods. • P reventing access to transport or from pursuing a working life. Much of the end of last year was spent choosing which company would design and build the skatepark for us in Bourne. At several meetings at the Nagâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Head, the three companies that tendered presented their design ideas to the potential users of the skatepark. There were representatives of a variety of multi-wheeled machines, scooters, BMX, skateboards and skaters; there was also a good range of skills. The young people were very enthusiastic and came up with lots of great ideas. The skatepark company, Wheelscape, was selected after a detailed analysis of the various companiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; designs and building experience. A Design Group, again made up of the young people from Bourne,

have spent over a month finalising the design with Wheelscape, ensuring all users will be catered for. Once we have the final design, we will be able to show everyone what it looks like. We will discuss with those living nearby how the skatepark will be landscaped and how the design will minimise noise. We are currently negotiating the lease with Bourne United Charities for the land on the Abbey Lawn. Tree surveys will be undertaken, as will an analysis of the ground by drilling boreholes. These all cost a lot of money, so any financial contributions to the project are welcomed. We are currently re-submitting our application to get charitable status as a Charitable Incorporate Organisation. The next big step will be to apply for planning permission. Before we do this, we will hold a public meeting to show everyone the plans and answer any questions people may have. Additional funding is needed to maintain the current level of activity and obviously, following a successful planning application, full financing of the project with grants and fund raising will be needed to enable the park to be built. Several new members become got involved recently with the project. Maybe you should too? The more people that get involved, the sooner we will have a great multi-wheeled facility for the young people of Bourne.

m o r f s d Wor r o y a M the The mayoral year is racing relentlessly by, despite a quiet start to 2016, after a hectic November and December. We have both struggled to shake off coughs and colds and I understand that we are not alone. The break has allowed me time to finalise plans for a raft of events before I retire in May but also a time to reminisce. When I got a cold as a child, my mum would recite a variety of reasons why I had brought it upon myself. I hadn’t eaten my greens; I had gone out with a wet head; I had not kept my cap on; and bizarrely, my hair needed cutting: I was immediately despatched to Harry Fisher’s, the local demon barber. No plush salon, no comfortable waiting area, but a cold, draughty, wooden structure with a single light bulb the only sign of electricity. Usually hours of dread, waiting, before being summoned to clamber on to a wooden slat placed across his chair which raised me to the appropriate height for the ensuing operation. No modern appliances here, only a large cutthroat razor, frequently sharpened vigorously on his strop for shaving old men, and a hand clipper. The trick with the clipper was to release it from the hair when the blades were in an open position. This was a trick Harry found difficult to master. Some hair between the collar and the small basin placed on top of the head was removed smoothly and painlessly but an equal amount was tugged out in clumps leaving red, tell-tale marks on my neck. An appointment with Harry was a traumatic experience - but it didn’t half encourage me to eat my greens, keep my cap on and not go out with a wet head! We have a number of events in the planning stage. A Beetle Drive on the afternoon of Saturday April 9th; Bingo in Dyke, probably on March 19th; the Mayoress’s Tea Party on April 30th; Quiz Night on May 20th; and a Lancashire Themed Night at the Corn Exchange on April 2nd. I am also hosting quizzes for Dyke Village Hall funds and the Church Hall funds on February 27th and March 5th respectively. More details will appear in the March issue of “Discovering Bourne”. 52

Council News The start of another year, and it looks as if we are about to hit a spell of changeable weather. With that in mind, the campaign run by the Town Council to identify locations that could benefit from a grit bin has been rewarded by eight sites being put forward, to be licensed by Lincolnshire County Council. Once the relevant paperwork is received, the Town Council will be in a position to site the bins, enabling access to much-needed grit during periods of freezing weather. The ‘In Bloom’ effort, spearheaded by the Town Council, will take on a new look this coming year, with volunteers being recruited to form a working party to enhance the look, feel and quality of the town and its environment. We have regular volunteer litter-pickers out and about, doing their bit to help keep the town clean and, with the Queen’s 90th birthday looming, we will be joining the rest of the country in a grand ‘Clean for the Queen’ effort on the weekend of March 4th, 5th and 6th. Watch this space for further details. The Town Council has recently announced its inaugural ‘Community Champion of the Year’, which was presented to Mrs Nellie Sanders for the year 2015. Nellie has been a major force in raising money, by way of her amazing lunches, for both national and local charities. The award will become an annual event, where the general public will be asked to nominate their ‘Community Champion of the Year.’ One aspect of the Town Council, not too familiar to many people, is their Small Grants Scheme. This allows the Town Council to make small grants where, in the Council’s opinion, the grant is in the interest of, and will bring direct benefit to, the Council’s area, or any part of it, or all or some of its inhabitants. However, a grant cannot be made to an individual for an individual’s benefit only. Past recipients have been The Butterfield Centre, Dyke Village Hall Committee, Bourne 1st Scouts, Royal British Legion (Bourne Branch) and Bourne Youth Choir, to name but a few. Thurlby Community Primary School Thurlby Community Primary School was established in 1878 and originally occupied a site on Station Road, Thurlby. The school, with only four classrooms, eventually became inadequate to accommodate the increasing population and, in 1979, was split into two parts : five- to sevenyear olds in the original building and others in a mobile classroom on Lawrance Park. In 1987, the two groups were reunited on the present site where we remain today. Further demand for places has been met by the addition of new classrooms and learning areas. Our school badge depicts the school bell in the tower, exactly as it appeared in the original school. The bell now hangs in the entrance foyer and is rung on the last day of the school year by departing Year 6 children. The aim of Thurlby School is to provide an education which, through the promotion of high standards, allows every child to fulfil his or her potential to the maximum and to prepare pupils for life beyond the school. We strive to achieve our aim by offering a broad and balanced curriculum, taught through a variety of teaching strategies without neglecting the important values of discipline, courtesy and good manners. Our educational philosophy is one of “expectation and achievement”, and our ethos and learning environment retain the traditional warmth of a village school. GET TO KNOW YOUR DOG For the last year, I have been training my chihuahua, Phoebe. At the same time, two of my sons, my daughter and my wife have been training our other dogs. Dog training has changed a lot over the last twenty years with a greater understanding of dog behaviour. The idea of dominance and forcing changes of behaviour has gone, and has been replaced by rewardbased training, producing willing co-operation.The whole idea is to build a relationship â&#x20AC;Ś and have fun. Most people do not want to compete at high level agility or obedience, but do want to be able to have some control and co-operation from their dogs. We have had such fun training our dogs. Training (or rather, attempting to train) a chihuahua was a new challenge for me. I seem to have problems controlling my feet around such a little dog! It is also amazing how many treats a little dog can eat. She particularly likes smoked mackerel which is great for training â&#x20AC;Ś but not so good smelling of fish for the rest of the day. Besides training the basics (walking on the lead, sitting on command, recall and walking off the lead) we have done trick training and fun agility. We have taught our dogs to touch things with their nose or paws and then used this to make people think they can find things on command (secretly using the scent from treats). We have taught our dogs to weave between our legs and jump through our arms .Recently, we have combined a bit of agility and trickery and have our dogs jumping over and going under each other.

No matter how much you think you know about training dogs, it is good to train with other people and other dogs. There will be classes to suit any ability. All dogs and owners should experience this basic training to make the best of their relationships. There are many good trainers in the area and you can ask your local vet for more information.

The main point of all this is building a strong relationship with your pet. At the same time, it is a lot of fun (as long as you do not take it too seriously ).When you can influence your pet with rewards and you play and have fun with them, then you become

The Windows Club and the WinFix 10 Utility The Windows Club (http://www.thewindowsclub. com/) is an excellent source of information for Microsoft Windows. They also have a library of tools including one for automatically fixing issues with Windows 10. Given the amount of work I am currently undertaking, digging people out of a large hole that Microsoft excavated for them with a very unreliable upgrade process from Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10, this tool may well help people address issues on their systems. To download the tool go to: http://www. thewindowsclub.com/fixwin-for-windows-10 Unlike most applications this tool does not need to be installed and will run straight off your hard disk, or memory stick; just double click on the FixWin_10.exe file.

1) Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

I was born at the Lydia Beynon maternity hospital in Newport, Gwent. My fondest memories are playing football with my mates out on the green at the back of our house, or finger-flicking my Subbuteo players around the indoor pitch, with my Hamilton Academicals set my pride and joy. 2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? In business, a guy called Casey Powell, (the founder of Sequent Computer Systems) whose policy was to provide superb customer service. His company motto was for us all to be ‘easy to do business with’, which fuelled my own passion for customer service. In life, my kids Jamie and Ceri Lovesey. The love and parental instinct you feel for your kids is indescribable, and they continue to inspire me (and drive me crazy at times), even today in their 20s. 3) Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of “Tarzan” and the “John Carter of Mars” series, which has inspired my own writing. When you consider the year they were written, they are amazing stories.

Set up your own business early. I was very successful in corporate IT after leaving the RAF, but I wish I had set up LITES PC much earlier and worked for myself. Not only is it more enjoyable, but I would’ve been at home more when my kids were younger.

A Glimpse at Mexico with Big Tom Welcome to my motoring section for February, and didn’t we have some very odd weather throughout Christmas time? You have to spare a thought for the poor people “up-north” with all that flooding. Although it was mild here, my family spent our Christmas in a slightly warmer temperature of 30-35 degrees in Mexico!

As important as it is to continually strive to improve road safety (my regular readers will be only too aware of my views on that subject), it is worth acknowledging that the 2013 and 2014 road deaths comparison between nations, puts the UK second only to Sweden (Mexico being a long way down the list).

As we travelled around on the roads, it was noticeable how much police presence there was in Mexico, compared to here in the UK. Police over there regularly stop vehicles, search lorries, and have regular police checkpoints in the roads. The “307” was our local dual-carriageway running down the east coast, (if anyone reading knows it). They have regular maximum speed limit changes, make regular use of speed awareness signs as you drive along and, unlike our dual-carriageways, they come with cycle lanes.

Do take care on the roads during these winter months, make sure your tyres are well maintained and your fluid levels are kept topped up in the engine. Wishing you all safe driving. Tom from BIG TOM Driving School

But for me, by far the most dangerous feature of their dual-carriageways was the option given to do a complete U-turn in a break in the central reservation (see image for an example). We have our own problems with the breaks in the central reservation on the A1 between Peterborough and Newark with vehicles crossing the A1 – over in Mexico they use them to do a U-turn!
