Welcome to our April edition... Easter has come and almost gone, and this month we’ve included a treasure hunt activity which will hopefully keep your enthusiastic little, and notso-little, ones busy in those days before school re-starts in early April. To me, the build-up to Easter always seems a bit like a speeding train – you’ve only been on it a little while since leaving the station in the New Year; things have rushed past the window, (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and the like); you’ve just about got used to the

wind and rain; and guess what here’s your stop! Everything has flown by and you’ve been caught unawares. However, we are now in a much better place than at the start of the trip – evenings are now pulling out, there’s sunshine on the flowers in the garden, barbeques, time to think about those holidays ahead ….

In a year, already to be remembered for the sad loss of far too many of the great and the good, this month we feature our greatest writer, whose death occurred exactly four hundred years ago, on St. George’s Day, April 23rd, 1616. William Shakespeare “lives on” in many ways, from his plays, which continue to entertain on stages around the world, to his many phrases which have since entered into our everyday language. This month’s quiz is just “As you Like it” and, hopefully, not too “Much ado about Nothing”.

We at “Discovering Bourne” are always looking out for new ideas for features and interesting stories and anecdotes from our many readers. The balance provided between pure advertising and general items of information and news stories, is one which we enjoy striving to maintain. Please get in touch if you know of a new area of interest which we could possibly explore.

Dotty Hen Vintage -“Shabby Chic” hits Bourne! – One Year On It’s difficult to imagine, but it’s true – twelve months have indeed passed since this headline announced the arrival of Jason Skinner’s ambitious foray into the “shabby chic” market. In that time, his shop and adjoining workshop, just off Abbey Road, behind the Corn Exchange in Bourne, have been filled and then re-stocked on a regular basis, as word of his wares, along with his ability to transform “tired” furniture, has spread around the district. Old tables, chairs and stools, alongside candle stands, picture frames and boxes are all there, ready to bring an antique look into your home, some tinged with delicate French adornments. In his workshop, many pieces which customers have commissioned, have become transformed by a mixture of rubbing down, stressing and re-painting in a particular way – the final product …magnifique! Jason has been staggered by the public’s response to his “Dotty Hen Vintage” concept, particularly with his commissioned work. He is most grateful for the support offered by so many regulars and local helpful firms, such as Stringers, Sew Friendly and Harrison and Dunn.

Walking the Macmillan Way is Yvonne’s Next Challenge Two hundred and ninety miles in three weeks is the tall order facing Bourne ladies, Yvonne Roberts and Lilian Vaughan, along with their friends, Christine Caston from Rippingale and her sister, Marie Caston from Deeping. On Easter Monday, March 28th, this intrepid quartet will strike off from the top of Boston Stump and follow the

Macmillan Way across the heart of the English Midlands, arriving on the south coast, at Abbotsbury in Dorset on April 14th. Yvonne’s husband, Taff, will be doing the difficult bit, ensuring that he drives the support caravan to the right spot each day, to rendezvous with them and provide crucial moral support! The aim is to raise a stash of cash for the fantastic Macmillan Nurses. Please contact Yvonne on 393219, if you can help her on her way.

“Wellbeing Week” at Renu February saw the very successful launch of “Wellbeing Week”, a new initiative from Renu. The purpose was to introduce both existing and new clients to a wide variety of topics that can affect their wellbeing, including subjects such as looking after their feet, their pelvic floor, beating belly fat, managing stress levels, discovering aromatherapy etc.

Many of the sessions were so popular that they were run twice to accommodate the numbers, and were very well received by the audience. North Stars Shine Brightly Again! Bourne family firm, North Shoes, are celebrating, after scooping their fourth national accolade. The North Street shoe store was named “Men’s Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year” in the prestigious 2016 Footwear Industry Awards – maintaining a remarkable run of success since the awards were launched in 2012. In that time, they have now twice been named “Men’s Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year”, as well as winning the “Independent Family Retailer of the Year” and “Ladies Independent Retailer of the Year” crowns.

Battams to Battle for B.H.F. It is a daunting prospect for any runner to tackle a marathon. How much more of a challenge then must it be for someone who admits to never having run in a race, for more than a minute, in her life? Twenty-two year old, Kerry Battams from Bourne, is that “someone”, as she runs the London Marathon on April 24th. Two years ago, Kerry’s father suffered a heart attack, and it is thanks to the fantastic support of the British Heart Foundation, that Kerry’s family were able to see her dad through his recovery. Now, eager to show her gratitude, Kerry has embarked on a gruelling programme, which will hopefully culminate in her raising £2,000 in sponsorship for the British Heart Foundation. Early March, and Kerry has already progressed from the N.H.S. “Couch to 5km.” app. to an actual half marathon. “With persistence and hard work, anything is possible”, Kerry assures us, and who are we doubt this determined young lady? Kerry deserves our every effort to make this target attainable. BOURNE SCRABBLE CLUB – Silver (9) Jubilee (16) Time (6)! Twenty-five years ago, last month, a humiliating defeat on the scrabble board led to five ladies from the local W.I. deciding to try and make amends, and from that low point, there emerged the Bourne Scrabble Club. Advice from Spalding Scrabble Club was sought, a meeting place was secured, a recruitment advertising campaign adopted, and there followed several successful years, with both ladies and men meeting regularly and entering many tournaments.

In recent years, unfortunately, several obstacles began to appear, including health and age concerns, increased cost of room hire and members moving away. However, the decline in numbers has been halted now, once the decision was taken to change from an evening-only activity to one which now occupies three hours on a Monday afternoon. It is certainly a very friendly and very sociable club, with an emphasis placed on the “tea and biscuits” element and a good

laugh and a chat, alongside the brain-searching required to secure those top scores! Anybody getting a bonus word can expect a chocolate bar reward! There is currently a membership of almost twenty, and new members are always made welcome. Why not give it a go, and keep those brain cells active? Days are lengthening and hopefully the weather, and the soil, will be warming up, but don’t forget that we can still have some hard night frosts, so keep an eye on the weather forecast and have some insulation materials handy.

t is tempting to get plants off to an early start but, outdoors, it is still risky so why not sew a few advanced seeds indoors then harden them off next month and 12/02/2015 17:35plant them in early June? Seeds that can be planted out include; leeks, most root crops (but cover beetroot if the soil is cold and wet), broccoli, cabbages and other brassicas, peas and broad beans. If you haven’t planted your onions yet, make it one of the first jobs of the month and continue planting seed potatoes, but make sure you earth-up the emerging shoots of your earlies to protect them from frosts. Other crops you can plant out are; artichokes (propagate by cutting off new side-shoots or suckers with a short length of root from the base of the plant –re-plant and water well), herbs (most can be planted out now, but those with tender leaves will need covering at night), peas and broad bean seedlings, which can be hardened off and then planted out. Asparagus beds should be prepared and planted this month (see last month’s advice on preparation); after that it will be too late. I recently read about an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn by pre-chitting: - lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box; an old ice-cream carton will do. Check daily, and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost and keep warm indoors or in the greenhouse. When the shoots reach about an inch high, plant out under a cloche, without disturbing the roots, and feed them with nitrogen-rich feed. There are always jobs that can be done around the allotment or kitchen garden and a couple for this month are: build cane supports for climbing beans and put up pea sticks. Regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings and young plants, as the weeds will take up all of the nutrients that the vegetables require for healthy growth. Hoeing is a really good way of keeping the weeds at bay; even if there are no visible weeds, a quick hoe will keep on top of them.

Crafting Evolution Stamford Handmade Limited are a “notfor-profit” creative group of local artists, crafters and lovers of all things handmade. Supported by a membership of dedicated and hard-working crafters, the group has been in existence for more than six years. Starting out as the Stamford Artisans Guild, the group has grown and evolved over time, and to reflect this evolution, the membership decided to have a change of name starting in 2015. House-Hunting Season is Here â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Advice from the Experts For many people, the start of spring means the beginning of the house-hunting season. Moving home is an exciting time but, because it is not an everyday event, it can be frightening and can cause stress and worry. Buyers often donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realise that, on top of the cost of the house itself, there are many other, one-off expenses involved which can soon add up. These can include mortgage application fees, survey fees, Stamp Duty, search fees, land registry fees, legal costs, removal costs and, if you are selling as well as buying, estate agentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fees. If you are having a mortgage, your lender will carry out a basic valuation; this will only ensure that the amount they are lending you is protected. It is strongly advised that you also have an independent, more detailed survey carried out. The level of survey you need depends a lot on the individual property you are buying. Watch Out for the “Seven Deadly ISA Sins” As the current tax year enters its final weeks, make sure you are aware of some common ISA mistakes. If you had to sum up markets in 2016 in one word, it would be ‘volatile.’ We have enjoyed a generally rising market for a number of years now and as these markets mature, volatility does tend to increase. Corrections over the course of a rising market are normal, but they often create a floor for the next market surge - so you should not get spooked out of the market on bad days. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket - instead, diversify your savings across a range of assets - and also don’t get drawn into short-term thinking. It is important to be clear about your investment goals and how long you have to reach them. Volatile markets today should not worry you too much if you

We were invited to an evening with the Bourne Scouts, who presented cheques to half a dozen or more very worthy charities. Not only did they receive benefit from the fund-raising activities of the Scouts, they each outlined the superb contribution to society they voluntarily make and evidenced the large number of people in our town, whose nature is to seek to help those who are less fortunate. The Scouts and their associated groups are a wonderful example of organisations that combine character-building, skill development, fun and camaraderie with respect for, and service to, the wider community in which they operate. Sorry to return once again to my perennial theme of the Mayoral Charities, but my last few fund-raising efforts are rapidly approaching. We have two more “Pub Challenge” evenings to be held at the Anchor and at Smiths, in April and May respectively (Dates to be confirmed). I hope that both events will attract a number of spectators, to see the final games and the declaration of the ultimate champions. There will be three events at the Church Hall in the next three months. On April 9th, from 2.00pm until 5.00pm, we will be hosting a 20

Five Tips For A Perfect Viewing

– advice from Newton Fallowell A viewing is one of the most important parts of the buying process - it allows a prospective buyer to find out more about the property and the area and, ultimately, it will help them decide if it’s really the place for them to call home. As the seller, you want your property to give off the very best impression and hopefully find someone who thinks it feels like home to them. The process can be long and stressful, so these five tips might just help you along the way, in preparing for, and hosting, the perfect viewing. 1. First impressions really do count! Viewings are always arranged for a mutually appropriate time, so if you are then unable to make it at the last minute, or are browsing the aisles of your local supermarket whilst someone waits on your doorstep, you might as well rule that viewing out. Make sure you’ve spent some time cleaning and making a fresh and welcoming environment. Whilst you want the property to be respectable, remember it isn’t a show home, and showing it’s lived in can help to make people a little more comfortable. Some bright, seasonal flowers and lots of nice natural light always make a property seem more welcoming. 2. Kerb Appeal Whilst it’s important to have the inside of the property looking spot on, how does your property look from the road? If you’ve got an overgrown front garden, trim it back and make it presentable, so that, when the potential buyers pull up outside, they can see a clear view of the property. If it looks like it’s poorly maintained, you could get off on the wrong footing,

and they may enter the property with a negative impression. 3. Make it feel like home It’s your home and the prospective buyers will be quite aware of this – you know it best so showing off the best features of the property, and even telling little quirky anecdotes of the time your kids turned the under-stairs cupboard into their den, will help them to picture their family calling it home. 4. Don’t be pushy You’re not there to push someone into buying your home, you’re there to show them around the property and for them to learn how fantastic it is. Sometimes, it takes a buyer a little bit of time to decide if a property is right for them, so making good impressions and answering any questions that they may have will always help them to make a decision of their own. 5. Keep the best for last Make like a magician and have something up your sleeve that the buyers aren’t expecting. Whilst you should start with an attractive feature, like your fantastic new kitchen, when you’re coming to the end of the viewing slip in another feature that will really impress. Show off your mature, landscaped garden or the stunning views from your loft-room – adding these in last will make your home stick in their mind and will add a talking point when they begin to shortlist further.

How can I get my child to behave? This is a question many parents ask.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ answer, but if you are one of those parents wondering what to do next, having tried everything you can think of and ready to ‘walk off into the sunset’, here are some suggestions. Children want their parents to be pleased with them and proud of them, and parents can use this desire to manage their children’s behaviour.

For the next few days, try changing everything you say to your child into a positive interaction. In other words, tell your child what you want them to do - not what you don’t want them to do. So, for example, “Don’t kick the door” becomes “Keep your feet on the floor”. Think about everything you say to your child, and try to say the positive version.

Younger children respond well to distraction, as they are naturally curious. If they are getting silly or defiant, say nothing, but start doing something that makes them laugh, or sparks their interest. This could be something as simple as looking out of the window and commenting on what you see, or marching up and down, saluting and chanting “Left, right, left, right”. You could

start playing with Lego, toy cars, or colouring. Your child is likely to want to join in, especially if siblings are joining in. We all need acknowledgement and attention from other people. It helps us to feel good about ourselves and gives us a sense of belonging and value. Children are no different. However, they use behaviour to attract attention, and often it’s negative behaviour that achieves results.

If our child is playing calmly, quietly and behaving well, we tend to take the opportunity to make a phone call, do some jobs etc. As soon as it makes a fuss, we attend to it and meet its need, by providing a drink, picking it up, giving it a

hug and soothing it. Our child may come to the conclusion that, if it is quiet and undemanding, it is ignored, but when it makes a fuss, it receives attention. Whilst you may have vowed that you were going to relinquish comfort foods and take up exercise more regularly, the reality of maintaining motivation in the longer term can be a challenge for the best of us.

Don’t allow yourself to be tempted It could well be that you still have sugary, fattening foods hanging around the house. If that is the case, YOU WILL eat them! Instead, give them away to the local food bank, freeze them or, at the very least, put them in a box and seal it up, to be opened when you have reached your goal. The thirty minute rule! Time is precious. Plan your activity

schedule and put it in your diary. Did you know that, if you exercise for thirty minutes, three times a week for four weeks in a row, you are 80% more likely to achieve your goals? It may be only thirty minutes, but if you do not put it in your diary, you will probably let other things get in the way. Put this at the top of your priority list, arranging other events around it, and you will see and feel the difference! You are far more likely to stick with your eating plan if you are keeping the thirty minute rule. Develop a good sleep routine Sleep is where the body resets and burns fat. Cut down your

“screen time” in the evening and try relaxing in a hot bath instead. Give yourself the time to relax and recuperate from the pressures of the day and treat yourself to some essential bath oils, rather than fattening snacks. Reveal your inner radiance Life is so hectic these days and the stresses and strains of daily life can leave us putting our own needs last. This can lead to another year of disapproving looks at ourselves in the mirror. A well-nourished, rested body will make you exude radiance in your skin and body, and boost your energy levels.

Five Steps to Healthy Feet

Amy Leverton is a member of the podiatry and chiropody team at the Wellhead Practice. She has experience in both the NHS and private practices, is a member of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, and is registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council. “Feet are extremely complex,” Amy says, “but there are five really simple things people can do to maximise foot health”.

1. Wear the right shoes

“It sounds obvious, but wearing good quality and well-fitting shoes is really important,” advises Amy. Poor footwear can cause common problems like corns and calluses, but can also contribute to more chronic, biomechanical disorders like plantar fasciopathy (heel pain). Feet also expand over the course of a day, so another tip is to avoid shoe shopping in the morning, or you may find that your new shoes are too tight by the afternoon! 2. Cut your nails correctly

“At the Wellhead Practice, we are very experienced in surgical procedures for onychocryptosis (ingrowing toenails),” Amy says, “but you can minimise the risk by ensuring you cut your nails correctly and regularly”. The best technique is to

cut straight across the nail and avoid any curves. The Wellhead podiatry team offer professional nail cutting and care, which is particularly beneficial for those with limited mobility. 3. Keep your feet clean and dry

“Most people know that keeping your feet clean is important, but drying them well is also vital,” Amy says. Fungal infections, such as tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) are very common, but can be tricky to treat. Drying between your toes is a good preventative measure for fungal problems. 4. Check your feet regularly

pressure of up to four times your body weight goes through them. As a result, Amy advises regular checkups, particularly for higher risk groups, such as those with diabetes, poor circulation or lack of sensation. 5. See a professional

A weight-loss expert is calling on adults from Bourne to take time out of their busy lives to think about their health and wellbeing as part of a new government campaign that says it’s never too late to make a change. Slimming World are partners in Public Health England’s new “One You” campaign, which aims to support adults to make simple changes towards a healthier and happier life, and provide the tools, motivational support and encouragement every step of the way. Jo Bradford, who runs a Slimming World group in Bourne, said: “One You is about helping adults take time out of their busy lives to think about their own health and wellbeing. Because, after all, there is only one you - and it’s never too late to start making small changes. A few new healthy habits could be all it takes to live a longer, healthier and happier life.” Jo says that the government’s renewed focus on public health has never been more vital, as around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. “As well as the serious physical health conditions obesity can lead to – from diabetes and raised blood pressure to the increased risk of heart disease and cancer – people who struggle with their weight often experience low confidence and poor self-esteem. “One You is a perfect fit for Slimming World. We know that making healthy lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet and becoming more active, can have a huge impact on your health right away. It also helps raise selfesteem and self-confidence, by helping people to feel more in control of their own lives. You may think that April is too early for tennis, but check out what your local tennis club has to offer, at their Open Day on Sunday April 24th. There are eight tennis courts, two of which are floodlit for winter evenings, and five on impeccably maintained grass. They are available from May to September, for that extra-special experience of playing lawn tennis in the magnificent, walled Monks Garden - the perfect setting for those wishing to participate in organised social tennis, league matches, or to simply come down for a friendly ‘knock’. Social tennis, match-play and a coaching programme are the cornerstones of the club. Social tennis sessions for members are on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, throughout the year, and Thursday evenings on the grass in the summer. The club enters teams in the Lincolnshire, Peterborough and District, and AEGON tennis leagues. A very important aspect is the club’s Junior Development Programme, run in conjunction with its coaching partner, “ON2COURT”. Regular junior coaching sessions for all abilities are held on a Friday afternoon from 4pm, and on Saturday from 9am. Additional performance programmes help young players to further develop their skills, providing a gateway to being part of a team, and playing in AEGON and LTA tournaments. Personal coaching for all members is also available. The club is affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), entitling members who are also BTM members, to be included in the Wimbledon Ticket Ballot. Success for Well-Groomed Academy! Early March saw students from Bourne Academy put on their annual Academy Musical which this year was the Broadway hit, ‘Hairspray’. Under the guidance of the staff production managers, a cast of sixty-five students from all years took to the stage to perform for three evening performances. The main roles for the show were performed by the Year 13 Performing Arts group, and the technical, front of house and stage management side of the production was provided by the Year 12 AS students. Head of Drama, Ted Fisk, said: “We are always very proud of the students who take part in the show and this year was no exception, as students were thoroughly committed - a particularly talented crop of Performing Artists. It has truly been a whole school musical, with representation from every House and every year group. All years have greatly enjoyed the experience. We were very

fortunate this year to be able to welcome our new Head of Music, Mr Green, who has been a fantastic Musical Director. Furthermore, the band that rehearsed tirelessly were very professional, as were all the star performers on stage.” Despite the increased emphasis on the EBAC, Bourne Academy wholeheartedly supports the Arts and is even working towards a renewal of their “Artsmark” status. “Hairspray” was a sell-out for all three evening performances and the primary school students were also pleased to have received a special viewing of the dress rehearsal. The cast of sixtyfive students was clearly proud of the week’s achievements and rightly so; it was indeed a fabulous spectacle, as both the music and drama departments continue to set themselves such high standards of performance and professionalism.

| Food Roast leg of lamb with thyme and lemon Enjoy the very best of British lamb with this delicous recipe, perfect for a family get together on a Sunday

Method 1. Preheat the oven to gas 7, 220°C, fan 200°C. Put 3 garlic cloves, some fresh thyme leaves, the zest of 1 lemon and 2tbsp olive oil in a pestle and mortar, season, and bash into a paste. 2. Take a 2.5kg (5Ib) leg of lamb (to serve 6) and, using a sharp knife, make little slits over the meat. Rub the herb mix all over. Slice 2 onions finely and scatter into a large roasting tin. Add a few thyme sprigs, drizzle with 1 tbsp of olive oil, season and put the lamb leg on top. 3. Roast for 20 minutes. Reduce the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C, pour 250ml (8fl oz) white wine and a splash of water over the lamb. Roast for 15 minutes per 500g

(1.1lb) for pink lamb; for well-done lamb roast for 20 minutes per 500g. Baste the lamb with its juices a few times during cooking and add a little water to the tin about 15 minutes before the lamb is cooked. 4. Remove the meat, place on a serving plate, lightly cover with foil and leave for 20 minutes. To make gravy, remove the excess fat from the tin. Over a high heat whisk the meat juices with 2tsp flour. Add 500ml (17fl oz) hot stock and let it bubble for 3-4 minutes. Stir in 1⁄2 tsp Dijon mustard and 1 tsp redcurrant jelly. Season and serve with the lamb.

Shakespeare’s Language – What’s that all about then? This month, the world remembers Britain’s greatest poet/ playwright, as April 23rd is the day, four hundred years ago, that he “shuffled off this mortal coil” (Hamlet’s way of saying that he died!) If you have ever had to struggle with Shakespeare’s obscure language from long ago, (and who hasn’t – the National Curriculum being what it is?) help is at hand, on the internet. “No Fear Shakespeare” puts Shakespeare’s language side-by-side with a facing-page translation into modern English, the kind of English people actually speak today. Sonnet 98 – “From You Have I Been Absent In The Spring” shows just how accessible the Bard’s words could actually become: From you have I been absent in the spring, When proud-pied April, dressed in all his trim, Hath put a spirit of youth in everything, That heavy Saturn laughed and leapt with him.

I wasn’t amazed by how white the lily was, nor did I praise the deep red of the roses. They were only sweet, only pictures of delight, drawn in imitation of you, the archetype of spring. It seemed like it was still winter and, with you away, I played with these flowers as if I were playing with your reflection.

It’s not just Flowers that rise in the Spring!

Last year, we saw a lot of ticks and the relatively mild winter this year will have done little to reduce the numbers for this spring. Ticks will start to rise out of the ground in the next two months, when we get the warmer spring weather. Now is a good time to think about tick treatment. Ticks are part of the spider family. They feed off the blood of animals, after which they drop to the ground and lay their eggs. The three main sources of ticks in this country are sheep, deer and hedgehogs. However, they will sometimes attach to dogs, cats, humans and other animals. When one of my sons was a baby, I was horrified to find a tick attached to his head after playing in grass in Scotland. Before a tick feeds, it looks like a small spider. It sits on the top of grass stalks with its front legs held up waiting for an animal to come by. Once it gets onto the animal, it crawls up the body and starts to feed . The animal does not usually feel this, as the tick injects a local anaesthetic along with anticoagulants to make the blood flow. The body of the tick now grows hugely and turns a grey colour. This is the stage that the tick becomes visible . After feeding for a day or so, the tick detaches and drops to the ground. When removing a tick, it is important not to squeeze it, as this can increase the risk of infections being passed from

the tick. The mouthparts of the tick need to be grasped close to the skin with something like tweezers and the tick removed by twisting, not pulling. There is a very useful tool called the “O’Tom Tick Twister” which makes tick removal much easier. Your veterinary surgeon will be able to provide these. The most worrying disease that can be transmitted by ticks is Lyme disease, which is caused by bacteria, and is on the increase in recent years. The most common symptoms in dogs and cats are lethargy, joint pain and fever, which can occur months after the tick bite . Other symptoms include neurological symptoms, heart disease and meningitis. Once diagnosed, the disease is easily treated in its earlier stages with a certain type of antibiotic. This same disease can also affect humans with the same symptoms. Infected people will often develop a skin rash a few days or weeks after the bite, that often looks like a target with a central circle at the bite site and an outer ring. There are several treatments on the market that kill and repel ticks. Take care as many of the modern flea preparations do not kill ticks. Talk to your veterinary surgery for more information.

Bourne U3A is specially set up to offer opportunities for the retired and semi-retired to enjoy and participate, lead and present, learn and explore, through a full and varied programme of regular small group activities, run by and for its members. Their activities range from learning French to walking the area - from day trips out to nearby locations of scientific, historical, natural or other particular interest – from taking part in dancing, play reading and drama to learning to write, manage stocks and shares, tasting wine and having meals

2016 Year of the Hacker? (Part Two) Many experts in the field of IT security are predicting that 2016 will be the worst year ever for scammers and hackers. Since the start of the year we have already witnessed attacks on services at the BBC, HSBC Bank and Lincolnshire County Council and I am sure there are others that have been less publicly acknowledged. Last month, in part one of this article, I focused on the different types of backup that you should run to help protect you from loss of data. In part two I am changing this focus to more general advice to help you avoid becoming a successful target for these scammers and villains. Security Suite: In my opinion these are a must have. The current three top performers are Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton. Avast is currently the best of the ‘free antivirus’ tools but I would recommend upgrading from a free solution to a fully paid security suite. Email Care: Be careful when using your email as it is a common place for hackers to ‘hook’ you in to a website or attachment that contains malware. Most security suites have email scanners built in but these only offer limited protection. Bottom line, if you are not 100% that an email with a web-link or attachment is valid do not open it. Generally financial organisations do not send email that contains attachments. associated with your bank account, requiring you to login to your account using the usual security access codes. Telephone Scam Awareness: A very common tactic is for a hacker to call you and claim they are from a well-known company. They will then persuade you that there is an issue with your system and that they need to log on to correct it. At this point they may load malware onto your system. This is actually an easy one to ‘police’. NONE OF THESE CALLS ARE VALID – IGNORE THEM. Password Selection: I know many of you will hate this one but do not use the same password for different services. Also make your password complex (ie. Uppercase, lowercase, a symbol and a number). The common advice from security experts is not to write these down but if that is what you have to do to remember them then do it. The best way of recording them is to have a code that only you know, so what appears on the page is slightly different to the actual password. There are also online cloud based solutions that will store your passwords in an encrypted format so you can access them from any device as needed (e.g. www.passwordbox.com) If all this makes you concerned about the security of your system then good, you should be. However, if you follow these steps you will greatly reduce your risk of being attacked.

April sees our Club Spotlight shining, appropriately enough, on a thriving theatre school, whose ambitious Director, Andrew Clingo, here sheds light on to this Bourne-based group. “Rock You Theatre School” (RYTS) was formed in 2015, and our aim is simple: to provide quality, performance-based training in theatre and the performing arts, at an affordable price. We are absolutely passionate about theatre, and believe you won’t get better training locally. Our Summer School in August 2015 saw thirty students acting, dancing and singing their way through Willy Rusell’s “Our Day Out”, and our December Showcase was “Annie Jr” which helped us to successfully raise £390.43 for the Thorpe Hall Hospice Appeal. Our 2016 Summer School will be “Oliver”. Here, the children will work intensively on the drama, dance and singing from “Oliver”, for a performance for family and friends on the Friday evening. You do not need to attend Rock You Theatre School classes to attend our Summer School. The “Rock You” format is very simple: students attend for three hours a week on a Saturday afternoon from 2.00 – 5.00pm. The first hour is a Musical Theatre lesson (basically singing and dancing at the same time!) which involves all of the pupils working together. For hours two and three, the school splits into two groups and each group will have a fifty-five minute dance and drama lesson

with a short, ten minute break between the two sessions. Expectations for good behaviour and outstanding performance are maintained through both disciplines, as we want our youngsters to stand out from the crowd, and remember that what we teach them at RYTS are skills that don’t vanish when the curtain falls – they are skills for life. Although we hold our classes at Bourne Abbey Primary Academy, you do not have to attend Bourne Abbey to join us. We enrol students between the ages of seven and sixteen, three times a year – in January, April and September. Prospective students and their parents are very welcome to visit the school, by prior arrangement, at any time. We are absolutely committed to the welfare and safety of children in our care and, as such, all staff working at RYTS satisfy the requirements of the enhanced level, DBS check to ensure their suitability for working with us.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings – “Boy Racers” Beware! I recently posted a picture on the team Facebook page of a car that had been seized, under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, and this caused a bit of a debate. As a result, I decided to discuss this piece of legislation here and consider just what powers the police have. The Act was brought in to deal with vehicles being used on a road in a manner which causes alarm, distress or annoyance, or where it amounts to careless or inconsiderate driving. An example might be performing screeching ‘handbrake turns’ in a housing estate or revving the engine while parked on the roadside. It is important to explain the definition of a “road”, as it is more than you might think. A road is any highway and any other road to which the public has access and includes public highways, footpaths and bridle ways. It also includes road verges.

On the first occasion of such driving, the driver of the vehicle will be given a warning which remains with both the driver AND the vehicle for twelve months. That means if the driver drives another vehicle in the same manner, or another driver drives the same vehicle in a similar manner, then the offence is committed, and the vehicle can be seized. The warning is still in force for the full twelve months after being seized, and further breaches can again result in seizure.

The Act states that, if a vehicle is driven in such a manner, then a constable or a PCSO can seize the vehicle and the driver can be reported for the offence. The driver will then be given a notice explaining how they can reclaim the vehicle. Should the vehicle not be claimed, then it is disposed of. There are recovery and storage costs to pay, before the vehicle is released.

Discovering. . . the hunting field

In past times, Bourne was often the centre of fox hunting activity in South Lincolnshire, one of the most active being the Cottesmore Hunt, established in 1666 by Viscount Lowther, together with the pack owned by Sir John Trollope, who became the first Lord Kesteven when he was raised to the peerage in 1869. The hunts had a reputation in the neighbourhood for pursuing their activities with scant regard for person and property because this was the sport of the landed gentry and as they were also usually magistrates, few dared complain even though there were scenes of extreme cruelty to animals.

He was then brought on to the lawn and after the brush and head had been cut off, the master of the hounds stepped forward and threw the body of the fox into the air to fall amongst the dogs, which in a very few moments, tore it to pieces and consumed it.”

when they attempted to follow, several riders were swept off their horses and left floundering in the water, their hats floating ignominiously downstream as they struggled to reach the safety of the bank, a tale that was recounted in some detail and with much hilarity in the hostelries around Bourne for many weeks.

One such incident involved Sir John Trollope’s hounds that met at Manthorpe on Saturday 22nd January 1859 and were soon chasing a fox into Bourne along South Road. The animal ran through the vicarage garden, on to the Abbey Lawn and back into the garden, taking refuge behind some flower pots in an outhouse but was soon discovered and a newspaper reported the horrifying events that followed:

There were many similar incidents and because hunting invariably involved the gentry, there was great public amusement whenever they suffered indignities such as that which occurred on Saturday 25th January 1850, as riders with the Cottesmore came to grief while in full pursuit on the outskirts of Bourne.

Fox hunting has become a controversial and emotive subject in recent years, resulting in the Hunting Act of 2005 which banned the pursuit of wild animals with dogs although the traditional meets continue, particularly on Boxing Day, to give our market towns a colourful occasion but without the cruelty.

Challenges for Modern Day Drivers What is it about driving around Deeping and beyond that can cause so much stress these days? Some of the factors that contribute to the situation are within our control as drivers, and some are not. It seems that separation gaps between vehicles are either being disregarded by many or perhaps just forgotten. There actually should be a four second gap, leading up to the vehicle in front, in wet conditions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; any closer than that on our roads of 50 mph+, and the ability to stop in time to prevent a collision is seriously reduced. Whilst we have little control over the weather

conditions when we drive, problems can occur when we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t acknowledge the adverse weather conditions as we can sometimes drive at the same speed, using the same separation gaps, not allowing any time to break for refreshment, relax, recharge in what are often driving conditions that require high levels of concentration. The ways in which roads have been designed can raise stress levels, with many that were simply not designed for the volume of modern day driving, for example narrow roads, parked cars both sides, poor street lighting, insufficient white paint and obstacles that restrict vision.

Dementia Support – South Lincs. words by Kate Marshall We’ve been running our “Art for All sessions” for people living with dementia for about three years now. The sessions are led by Barbara Barker who is a former carer and who has taught art for fifty years! She is an accomplished artist in her own right, as was her husband, and she also teaches art classes for U3A in Bourne. During the past three years our members have produced the designs for note cards, Christmas cards and a 2016 calendar. The members have raised lots of money for our charity, selling these items. Their work has also been included in three local art exhibitions. We’re planning another retrospective exhibition at St James the Great church in Aslackby later this summer. This show will include work done in the past, as well as our more recent pieces.
