Welcome to the May edition of... What better way to welcome you all, than with a smile? Mid-May to Mid-June happens to be National Smile Month, which is the U.K.’s largest and longest-running campaign, (forty years old this year), to promote good oral health. In a world which often seems to try its hardest at times to make us feel inadequate and sad, it’s worth remembering that it’s much easier to smile than it is to frown. On page 60, you’ll find some interesting snippets about smiling. Remember … life is like a mirror- we get the best results when we smile at it. May’s issue is hopefully going to fill you all with the joys of early summer. If you are getting ready for the holidays, our advice here on travelling to where delicious food is to be found may make you smile. I hope you enjoy the feature on Wherry’s Lane and how the increasing popularity of this area of Bourne is starting to make residents happier than before. Finally, I was pleased to hear that this month’s Hot Seat incumbent, James North, was once able to supply a customer with a pair of Size 19 shoes – “That was no small feat”, he assures us!

This beautiful time of the year sees new life re-emerge from winter, and hedgerows and gardens become a kaleidoscope of colour - but a word of warning to all of you outdoor types, “with more head than hair”. Richard Clevedon-Smith, 49, an Exeter bus-driver, had what might, to most of us, have been a “hair-raising experience”, when he is convinced that he was targeted by a huge, Eurasian eagle owl recently … because it mistook his shiny bald head for an egg! Scary stuff, indeed. Let’s hope that this month’s collection of articles and wise words from our knowledgeable contributors will help you make the most of what Bourne has to offer in the weeks ahead, with several new businesses happy to introduce themselves to the waiting public. In response to Claire, I’d add that, to me, a smile is like a tight pair of pants - it makes your cheeks go up. Many thanks for the contributions from our usual suspects, and the positive and encouraging feedback we receive from you, our readers. Enjoy the read!

It is always a pleasure to meet people who clearly love their work, who show an abundance of passion and are convinced that they can provide an excellent result. To then consult a respected reviewing site on-line, and discover that six of the last seven customer reviews have been excellent, with maximum points awarded, makes it even more encouraging. The Nag’s Head in Bourne’s Market Place, is at present benefitting from these fabulous reviews. Yes, there have been some tweaks and changes recently, and they have bravely decided to change what they are about, around the same time as their new Head Chef, Leighton O’Callaghan, joined the team at The Nag’s Head. The new strategy involves the provision of top quality, fresh food, locally-sourced wherever possible, expertly cooked and presented with great service. There will be new menus every six to eight weeks, and the emphasis is not so much on “going up-market”, with all the extra costs passed on to the diner, but instead, a reassuring “keep it all fresh, nothing out of a packet and all home-produced sauces, desserts, pickles and chutneys”. Some of the new things they now offer are a “Pie and a Pint” night on a Tuesday, from 6pm, with a fabulous home-made pie plus a pint of real ale for only £10.95. They have then gone on to introduce a separate menu for those looking for something a little more

special, with dishes such as honey-smoked pork belly, served with bubble and squeak and a pea puree, or slow roasted shoulder of lamb, served in a potato cake with roasted carrots and herb salad - (both taken from the “Something Special” Menu and priced at £12.95 each). They have kept their popular “Smokehouse Menu” with some updates and delicious twists on traditional dishes, cooked ‘low and slow’. The “Weekly Specials”, at £9.95 each or two for £18, are still there, whilst the “a la carte” choices, (six starters, seven “Pub Classics” and three “From the Grill”) continue the theme of variety without undue expense. An all-new Grill Night, using Herefordshire beef, is now running on Fridays, from 6pm. Two grills for £25, choosing from Rib-eye, Sirloin and T-Bone steaks, is sure to be a hit! They have even brought in an “Early Bird” deal for Wednesday and Thursday, between 5pm and 7pm, with two courses for only £12.95. The kitchen team consists of Leighton, talented souschef Ben Allen, and Oliver Thorley. Ben has a number of years’ experience and has worked his way through the ranks, sharing Leighton’s passion for food. The front-of-house team, led by Reece Johnson and Kayleigh Exton, are very enthusiastic and work hard to ensure that the eatingout experience at The Nag’s Head is second to none. The reviews, after only two months, are saying that the food and service are very good indeed!

Bourne Rotarian Joins Polio Fight in India President of the Rotary Club of Bourne St. Peter, Alan Kaye, and his wife, Maggie, recently returned from India, having joined a large group of volunteers in late February, to immunise thousands of young children against Polio. Over one hundred Rotarians from the U.K. were joined by Rotary International members from the U.S.A, Canada, Japan, Belgium and Luxembourg, to add their support to National Immunisation Day. Based in Delhi and working in the slum areas, Alan and Maggie were kept busy administering

Bourne N.S.P.C.C. – Still Caring but Looking for New Faces The Bourne branch of the N.S.P.C.C. came into existence in June 1973, and there are still two lady members in the town who have been there right from the beginning. Wonderful as that may sound, it also serves to highlight the concern shared by many of today’s members. In the words of Kath Dolby, “We’re all getting a bit long in the tooth and the branch needs some new faces!” Hopefully, as a result of the following words which Kath has written, there will be amongst our many readers a large number of you who will feel encouraged to contact the branch and volunteer to become involved in the fantastic work carried out by the Society, in trying to create a better world for the thousands of disadvantaged youngsters out there. “We are essentially a happy and dedicated fund-raising group”, Kath explains, “who meet on

a monthly basis, in order to organise and then run a number of money-raising activities. We have Table-top Sales in Bourne Corn Exchange during the winter, and then Jumble Sales, Coffee Mornings, Plant Sales and Open Gardens throughout the rest of the year. Our main moneyspinner is the Ukelele Evening, involving the brilliant Spalding Ukulele Orchestra, which is usually a sell-out. This year, it will be held on Lincolnshire Day, (October 1st.) Watch out for more information nearer the time in “Discovering Bourne”. “Our next venture will be a Plant Sale in the Abbey Church Hall on Saturday May 14th, (10am to 2pm). There will be lots of interesting plants for sale, including bedding plants, and, of course, there will also be our now famous home-made soups, rolls and cakes for you to enjoy. We would be most grateful for any

Making Bourne Dementia-Friendly Dementia Awareness Week begins on May 15th. Cupcakes will be much in evidence and will be decorated with blue forget-me-nots – the Dementia Friendly Communities’ symbol. The aim of this Alzheimer’s Society initiative is to make Bourne more dementia-friendly by encouraging local organisations and businesses to take one or two practical steps to help ensure people living with dementia can continue to live well in their local community. In order to raise awareness, local business people will offer their customers forget-me-not cupcakes, encouraging them to think about how they can become more dementia-friendly. Local Dementia Action Alliance chairman, Heather Gilling, said: “Everyone can play a part in enabling people with dementia to live well. For businesses, their actions can be as simple as making sure they communicate clearly – listening and using simple short sentences when speaking to someone with dementia. “We would also encourage businesses to become a Dementia Friend, which involves an information session of less than an hour designed to help understand more about what it is like to live with dementia.” A Dementia Friends session will be held as part of Dementia Support South Lincs’ celebration of Dementia Awareness Week. Its usual monthly coffee morning, at Bourne Corn Exchange falls on May 18th, starting at 10 am. An invitation is extended to all members of the community to go along to talk to the group members. They can also enjoy a taster session of Tai Chi – an activity that brings benefits for people with dementia – but is also fun! And of course there will be cupcakes to go with the coffee. On Thursday May 19th, representatives from Dementia Support South Lincs and Dementia Action Alliance will have a pop up shop in Barclays Bank, Bourne and will be happy to have a chat with anyone who wishes to know more about helping Bourne become more dementia friendly.

m o r f s d Wor r o y a M the My mayoral year is racing to a conclusion on May 24th, when the Bourne Town Council will elect my successor and our focus is on a last couple of outstanding charity events. Recently, I have hosted a Lancashire Night at the Corn Exchange which attendees seemed to enjoy, and a Beetle Drive, which between them raised more than £600. By the time you read this, the Mayoress’s Tea Party on April 30th will be upon us and my last event will be a Quiz, once again at the Church Hall on Friday May 20th. The price is £6 a head which will include a Fish and Chip Supper and will start at 7.30 pm prompt. So that we can order the correct volume of food, we will need to assign tickets in advance, and they can be purchased from the Town Clerk on 426123, from Double and Megson in West Street, or from me on 425438. The quiz will be for teams of four, but we will accommodate individuals and couples on the night. Please bring your own drinks and glasses. Our year as Mayor/ Mayoress has been most enjoyable. It has been a privilege for a mere Lancastrian who moved to Lincolnshire some twenty-six years ago (as a missionary!!!) to represent the lovely town of Bourne across the county (and some neighbouring counties too). From Louth and Gainsborough in the north to Peterborough in the south, and from Mablethorpe and Wisbech in the east to Melton Mowbray in the west, we have consistently sought to portray the town in a very positive light. The people and businesses of Bourne have been very supportive to my charities. It has become increasingly clear that Bourne has a very caring community with literally dozens of voluntary organisations and hundreds of people giving their time and energy to support worthy causes, ensuring that Bourne is a better place because of their efforts. The number of people we need to thank is huge and, with the indulgence of ‘Discovering Bourne’, I shall acknowledge the business assistance in June’s edition.

“Small but perfectly formed”, it may be, but to owners Jayne Towers and Barbara Fox, their new venture, The Box Room Boutique, in Bourne’s Market Place is enormous, when compared with their usual means of selling to the public – two six foot long trestle tables! For five years, long-time friends and Bourne residents, Jayne and Barbara have been regularly selling their wares at Country Fairs, shows and events within a sixty miles radius of Bourne, including Newark, Heckington, Peterborough and Skegness. Now, since opening The Box Room on March 12th, their large range of handbags, jewellery and fashion accessories will fill the recently refurbished premises in town, although Jayne and Barbara plan to continue with some of their shows and Country Fairs, time permitting. The Fitted Furniture Specialist In his workshop on Meadow Drove, just outside of Bourne, there is one very hard-working, ambitious craftsman who, it seems, is forever juggling the demands placed upon him by customers, with the feasibility of projects, and whether or not there will ever be enough hours in the day to keep everyone satisfied! Those customers are, for the most part, people already known to Mark Davis, or who have been recommended to him by clients, for whom Mark has transformed parts of their home in the past. Having re-located to South Lincolnshire three years ago, and now resident in Hanthorpe, Mark brings an excellent reputation and enthusiastic attitude to his business, as “The Fitted Furniture Specialist”. “Well over half of my work is from customers returning to me. I’ll have fitted some furniture in their home in the past, for instance, and now they’re wanting a bedroom planning and installing,” Mark explains. Nearly thirty years as a “City and Guilds- qualified”, soletrading carpenter and joiner in his native Essex, followed a spell in the Royal

Several “high-end contracts” on exclusive London developments provided Mark with many years of experience, fitting out hotels and show-homes, but it was the Forces discipline, he thinks, that made Mark appreciate the value of trust and honesty in his dealings with the public. “If you can be trusted to do a good job, and on time, the public will come back … and they do”, he continues, with modesty. Now, Mark is establishing a customerbase in his adopted town and he will soon be needing extra hands in his workshop to meet present demands. Modular fitted wardrobes, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen units provide the backbone of his business, although he is ready, willing and more than able to design, produce and then install anything his customer may be seeking, to add value to their home. After an initial discussion with a customer, Mark will advise, produce detailed plans, manufacture the items and then install them, at a competitive price, and on time – hence his proud assertion that he is indeed a “Specialist in Fitted Furniture”.

To get rid of aphids: • Stir together 1 quart of water, 1 tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Do not dilute before spraying on plants. • Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot. • Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigolds and nasturtiums. Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list but a few include: carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately. Any seeds that were sown earlier will need thinning out: doing this when they are quite small lessens the disturbance to the surrounding plants. Harden off young plants that have been grown under glass or indoors before planting out: wind damage can be very serious in this area, as much as any frost. Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans and cabbages. Towards the end of the month, when the risk of frost has gone, it is possible to plant the chillies, peppers, courgette, sweetcorn and aubergines plants that were started off indoors. This is the last chance to propagate artichokes, by dividing and taking offsets from established plants.

Factors affecting Property Prices – advice from Newton Fallowell 1. Give your home “Kerb Appeal” This is estate agent talk for “make the front of your house look nice” and it will help you sell your property. 2. Boilers, electrics, plumbing Sellers often take a financial hit when buyers start looking at things like the boiler. A tricky scenario occurs when buyers don’t want to buy a house with a boiler on its last legs and sellers don’t want to replace the boiler. One of you has to cave in, either get it fixed or come up with a price negotiation to cover the costs. The same applies to problems with things like damp, broken roof tiles and plumbing issues. Whether it’s better to get all the stuff done, which should increase the value anyway, or hope buyers don’t notice, you’ll have to decide. 3. Get rid of the kids’ rooms The general rule is to paint over any rooms made up for the kids. Estate agents call it “neutralising” - neutral colours also make rooms appear bigger. 4. Improvements It goes without saying that new kitchens/bathrooms/ extensions usually boost the value of a house. 5. The Waitrose effect Apparently, we estate agents always let you know early if there’s a Waitrose nearby! 6. Schools Buy a house near a good school and you could benefit. Being near to one that is rapidly improving could help your sell-on value increase.

7. Make sure it doesn’t smell Buyers are put off by smells like animals and stale cigarettes, so take action if you’ve got people coming to view. 8. Live in a Market Town Prices in market towns are rocketing. 9. Live by the sea Tricky where we are, but being close to the beach boosts home prices. 10. Live in an odd number According to a survey by Zoopla, odd numbered homes are worth about £500 more than even numbered one. Why? No idea. 11. Other developments If you’re buying, it’s a good idea to look at what may have permission but not necessarily be built yet. A planned development could significantly change the character and tone of your chosen area. Beware, too, of areas where there are lots of empty homes, as you don’t have any idea what may be done with them. 12. Look out for the dreaded Japanese Knotweed Apparently, if buyers spot this invasive plant, either in your garden, or neighbouring gardens, it dulls their interest somewhat. It’s not easy to get rid of, so the advice is to get an expert in.

Secure your garden against green-fingered thieves As the fine weather settles in and the gardening bug bites, the temptation and opportunities for green-fingered thieves grow faster than weeds in the driveway. However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect our garden and possessions, particularly during weekends or summer holidays, when the home is empty. • Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools / machinery or bikes). • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds. • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home. • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home. • Install some sensory / outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • If you are going away, even for the weekend – lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access. • Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment; even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves. • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group – where you and your neighbours can look out for each other (see www.ourwatch.org.uk to find your local group) When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and / or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. We’re famously a nation that doesn’t like fuss, but new statistics from the British Acupuncture Council reveal that, when it comes to pain, nearly half of Britons just ‘grin and bear’ it. According to the report, released to mark Acupuncture Awareness Week in March, almost three in ten exercise more now than they did ten years ago, but more than half say they’ve been injured during sport in the past, and a third claim to have never recovered from their injuries.

Despite acupuncture’s widely recognized health benefits, statistics also show that one in five people say they are too scared to try it because of the needles. It is worth pointing out, that acupuncture needles are as fine as a human hair and are, more often than not, painless on insertion.

To overcome a sporting injury, almost three in five people take oral painkillers, and nearly a third turn to ice and heat packs, compared to just 11% who opt for traditional acupuncture. Many people put up with pain when they don’t need to. Often, discomfort from musculoskeletal problems can be alleviated with the correct identification and treatment -one of those options could be acupuncture. Traditional acupuncture is an evidence-based therapy, shown to help reduce pain and swelling, increase blood flow to promote recovery and help restore movement. Acupuncture is one of the oldest documented systems of

The changing face of Wherry’s Lane

he narrow lane between North Street and Burghley Street is named after local businessman William Wherry who built the house and shop at No 17 North Street in 1840 but by the late 20th century it had become neglected and untidy and defaced by litter and graffiti.

An ambitious scheme by South Kesteven District Council to rejuvenate the lane was announced in 2010 and finally opened in the summer of 2014 at an estimated cost of £2.2 million. Also involved was the old red brick grain warehouse in Burghley Street purchased for £350,000, together with workshops and two houses (£285,000) and the old Masonic lodge (£375,000) although these buildings were demolished to make way for the final development which included a complex of seven shops and 14 apartments. The entire area has been attractively landscaped and seating installed while with vacant land left over on the north side awaits further development in the future.

Sandra had always wanted to work in hair since being a child and worked at Top Knot in Peterborough as a teenager but, after getting married and having her first son, she entered the nursing profession, and remained as a nurse, both in hospitals and in the community for forty years, eventually managing several local care homes. On reaching sixty, Sandra decided that she wanted to come out of nursing, and realise her dream of running her own salon and so, with the support of her husband, Maxey Hair was opened late in 2015. With its relaxed atmosphere and caring attitude to every customer, it is going from strength to strength.

uly 4th 1996 and Wherry’s Lane, Bourne becomes home to the Bourne Big Wash Launderette. Almost twenty years (and an enormous quantity of sparkling clean items) later, husband and wife team, Simon and Katie Rowlands are still providing a very popular, reliable and professional service to the families and businesses of the area who return on a regular basis. Simon has been in charge for fourteen years and explains how this time of the year will be amongst his busiest, as bed linen, quilts, duvets and blankets, curtains, rugs and associated household furnishings are given the “spring clean” treatment; this alongside his regular customers with their service washes. t is curious how a tragedy can sometimes lead to a happy and successful outcome, as the experience of Michelle Meynell will serve to confirm. As Funeral Director and Manager of the Bourne and Deeping branches of R.J. Within the space of a few years, Michelle had the loss of her eleven-year-old handicapped son followed by her husband, succumbing to cancer. WHOSE FAULT IS IT? Primitive as it may seem, you still cannot get divorced in this country without blaming the other party for a matrimonial fault, unless you have been separated for a minimum of two years. There have been many rumblings behind the scenes for a long time to try and reform this situation and at long last, there is a Private Members’ Bill on No Fault Divorce, making its way through the House of Commons. The family lawyers association, Resolution, which represents 6,500 family lawyers, has got its weight behind supporting the Bill, which would have the effect of not needing to prove one of the spouses committed adultery, or behaved unreasonably, which requires all sorts of allegations of nasty conduct in order to satisfy the divorce criteria. The latest figures show that 60% of divorce cases were based on adultery or unreasonable behaviour although, when interviewed by YouGov last year, 27% of those who cited adultery or unreasonable behaviour, admitted this was not the real reason for the divorce, but they chose it as the easiest technical option. In other words, thousands of couples every year are having to fabricate blame in order to meet current divorce law requirements. The objective is to change the law so that a divorce can be progressed “where one or both of the parties to a marriage give notice that their relationship has broken down irretrievably and one or both of them are still of that view six months later”. It sounds simple enough, so we will see how it goes in the next few months.

The Lifetime ISA

From April 2017, savers aged between 18 and 40 can open a new Lifetime ISA (“LISA”). Announced during the March 2016 Budget, the LISA is, according to HM Treasury, designed to help young people to save “simultaneously… for a first home and for their retirement, without having to choose one over the other”. Any amount up to £4,000 can be saved into a LISA each year, between the ages of 18 and 50. LISA savers will receive a 25% annual government top-up, to a maximum of £1,000 per year. A LISA that is opened at the age of 18 offers the opportunity for 32 years of saving and bonuses. If you save the annual maximum of £4,000 per year over 32 years – a total of £128,000 before any capital growth or interest is included – this could net a total government bonus of £32,000. The money saved into a LISA may be used towards a deposit on a first home worth up to £450,000, or can be saved until the age of 60 to fund retirement. Any contributions to a

LISA will sit within the overall annual ISA allowance of £20,000 for the tax year 2017/18.

LISAs are limited to one per person rather than one per household; therefore, two first-time buyers will both receive the government bonus when they buy a home together. Meanwhile, the “Help to Buy ISA” will remain open to new savers until November 30th 2019, and open to new contributions until 2029. Savers can save into a “Help to Buy ISA” and a LISA, but may only use the government bonus from one account to purchase their first home. If you make any withdrawals before the age of 60 that are not for the purpose of buying a first

Hide the Windows 10 upgrade icon: If, at the bottom right of your desktop, you see the Windows 10 upgrade icon, then you can hide this by clicking on the small triangle on your task bar. You’ll then see a list of notifications. Find GWX and change it to Hide icon and notifications.

Now scroll down to find KB3035583. • Click the Installed Update button at the top of the window, find KB3035583 again • Right click (ie; press right mouse button on it) and select Uninstall Change your Windows Update settings to hide ‘Recommended Updates’ The final piece is to now change your Windows Updates so that it only suggests ‘important’ updates (ie; essential ones). To do this go back into your Windows Update screen. Click on Change Settings and then untick the box that selects ‘Give me recommended updates’. This will prevent the KB3035583 from reloading. The process above will work in most cases but becomes ineffective if Microsoft change the upgrade to a mandatory (important) upgrade rather than a recommended one. It wouldn’t surprise me if they took this step at some point in the future.

Remove the Windows 10 upgrade from Windows Update The Windows 10 update prompting is actually delivered to you via the standard Windows Update process that most of us are familiar with. It is actually update KB3035583 and, as an update this can be removed. Another method, as reported by a national magazine recently, is to use an application called GWX Control Panel to block the Windows 10 update process. This is available online from http://ultimateoutsider.com/ downloads/. This is reported as being effective but I cannot vouch for it as I have never used it, preferring the manual method detailed above.

Dementia Awareness Week encourages people who are worried about dementia to confront their worries by addressing dementia directly and speaking to the Alzheimer’s Society or their GP for information and support. Dementia is a disease of the brain, and some of the symptoms include loss of memory, mood changes and problems with communication and reasoning. There are many types of dementia and it can affect everyone differently. If you are worried that you, or someone close to you, may have dementia, then the Alzheimer’s Society say it’s important to talk about it. Dementia can be scary and many people don’t know where to turn, so ….

Read the time to help release the club head properly through impact The dreaded “slice spinning shot” is caused by the club face pointing to the right of the direction in which the club is swinging through impact. To help create a natural release of the club head and a straighter flying golf shot, try this exercise. Think of reading the time on your watch but, instead of wearing your watch on the outside of your arm (picture 1), have the watch on the inside of the wrist (picture 2). To read the time you must turn your arm outwards (picture 3) - exactly the same movement needed to release the club head through impact correctly. Most people train themselves to slice the ball when they read the time!! Do this exercise with,

Babesiosis - Advice for Dog Owners

Babesiosis has long been a disease seen only in Southern Europe, Asia and Africa. In the past, it has only been diagnosed in dogs returning to the UK from abroad but, recently, there has been a localised outbreak in Harlow in Essex prompting concerns that this may spread further through the country. Babesiosis is spread most commonly by ticks, but also occasionally in dog bites and blood transfusions. Babesia are protozoan parasites that attack red blood cells of dogs, causing them to break down (haemolysis) and this releases haemoglobin. This results in anaemia and jaundice. The incubation period is about two weeks, and dogs affected are usually very ill with a high fever, lethargy, red urine and anaemia and they often collapse. This can lead to organ failure. We already recognise a similar disease called Autoimmune Haemalytic Anaemia(AIHA) which we diagnose on blood smear. Babesiosis often induces AIHA, so in future we will need to differentiate between these diseases.

This disease is still extremely rare and localised in the UK. There have been no reported cases in Lincolnshire. The best control is to treat for ticks. Killing the ticks, in the first twenty-four to fortyeight hours after getting on to the dog, dramatically reduces the chance of contracting the disease, as well as reducing the spread. There are several good products on the market that can achieve this. Speak to your local vet for more information.

Babesia can be quickly diagnosed on blood tests. There are PCR tests available that detect the presence of Babesia DNA, as well as often being visible on blood smear. Most ticks in Europe are Babesia canis and will respond to treatment with Imidocarb Dipropionate and will recover over several weeks, if treated early. Some treated dogs can go on to be carriers for the disease and get a more chronic form of the disease later on. Many dogs will need hospitalisation and some may require blood transfusions and other fluid therapies.

I was born in Stamford and my favourite childhood memories are of holidays with my grandparents and I think that’s why I love spending time with my family and doing family things. 2 Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? That would be my grandfather FJ (Frederick John) North. He was the third generation of the family and led the company for forty years. He’s used to fitting shoes but, this month, James North, head of the North Shoes family business, tries out the ‘Hot Seat’ for size! James, 44, lives with wife, Claire, and children Jasmine (11) and Freddie (10), in Bourne. He’s extremely proud of the fact that he’s the fifth generation at the helm of North Shoes. Only two other independent shoe businesses in the UK can better that. North Shoes was launched by James’s great, great, grandfather, William, in 1876 and still trades today from the original premises in North Street, Bourne. James, who holds Society of Shoe Fitters qualifications, has built up the business, by adding three other branches, in Peterborough, Stamford and Cambridge. Born in Stamford, he was educated at Kirkstone House School, Baston, and studied his A Levels at Stamford College, before taking up a three-year management trainee course with Newey and Eyre. His first role for them was as a manager in Bedford. By 2006, when James took up the post of Managing Director at North Shoes (as his father, Roger, neared retirement), he was Senior Business Manager for Greater Manchester with “Electric Center”. James loves push-bikes and is a cycling fanatic. He’s also a rugby fan and supports Northampton Saints – but his greatest passion is spending time with his family.

I’d love to be able to go back in time and meet my great, great grandfather, William, and my great granddad, Frank. They’re from the first two generations of the family and it would be brilliant to get them round a table together and talk to them about the early days and ask them questions about the business. William started it all and Frank guided it through the Great Depression – they’d have so much knowledge to hand down! 4 How would you describe yourself in only five words? I love Bourne and the people who live in and around it, but I think the town would benefit from a few more independent retail shops that would make it even more attractive to shoppers. 6 What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”? This has been my philosophy and it has stood me in good stead throughout my life: Make sure, whatever you choose to do with your life, you enjoy it. I’ve met a lot of people about to start out in business who did not even know if they liked what they were doing – they were doomed to fail.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings – Rogue Traders There have been some reports recently of possible rogue traders operating in the area. It is important to know that many traders who come to your door are honest, legitimate people but there are some with the intention of scamming you out of your hard-earned cash. Rogue traders call on unsuspecting households, offering convincing deals to try to get you to agree to have work carried out. If you accept work from a rogue trader, you’ll pay much more than you intended … for very poor, unnecessary and sometimes dangerous work. The usual type of work offered includes garden clearance, roofing work and tarmac drives. Those who accept work may well find the price increases or the work is left unfinished. These simple tips can be found on the Action Fraud website. 1. Don’t sign on the spot – if you are interested, ask them to come back, maybe when you have someone else with you, or you’ve shopped around. 2. Always check the trader’s identity. Never use the number on their card. Check to see if they are a member of a reputable trade body.

8. Don’t hand over a cash deposit – a reliable trader will never ask you to do this (even if they need materials). Never agree to go with a trader to the bank to take money out. 9. Think before you agree to a trader starting any work straight away – have a seven day cooling-off period. 10. Trust your instincts - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! And finally ... it’s OK to say no. Remember, it’s your doorstep and your decision. If you feel pressured for any reason, ask the person to leave. To report a crime, call 101 (or 999, if in progress). 3. Be wary of special offers or warnings about your home - don’t get taken in by sales banter or high pressure selling techniques. Don’t be hurried into a decision, even if there is a discount. 4. | A little bit of History

Discovering. . . the POLICE FORCE

Law and order in past times was maintained by constables appointed by the magistrates, usually farmers and yeomen who combined official duties with their normal work. In times of riot and civil disturbance, special constables could be recruited from various walks of life provided they were of respectable character, such as shopkeepers, clerks, tradesmen and even elderly and retired people. The County Police Act of 1839 paved the way for the establishment of county police forces and Bourne was then part of Kesteven, one of the three divisions in Lincolnshire. A police force for Bourne was in place by 1857 with an officer and two constables who were soon arresting offenders for petty theft and attending the May Statute Fair in the market place, normally marred by drunkenness and fighting and frequented by tricksters and pickpockets, but not a single case of disorderly conduct was reported that year. The police strength increased as the town expanded and by 1861 a permanent headquarters had been established at the corner of Burghley Street and North Street complete with offices, cells and hostel accommodation for officers, 68

so enabling them to be available on 24-hour call to patrol the streets. There were then 16 officers and their presence was marked by a considerable decrease in crime and general lawlessness. From then onwards, policemen on foot patrol day and night were a familiar and comforting sight and during the early years of the 20th century when the motor car was becoming popular, uniformed officers could be seen regularly on point duty to keep vehicles moving in the increasingly busy town centre, especially on market days when stalls erected at the kerbside reduced the amount of road left for passing traffic. But when the first traffic lights were introduced in 1973, they were no longer necessary and so began the reduction in the police presence on the streets.

The police station in North Street continued in use until 1960 when it was replaced by a new building in West Street although this was downgraded to office status in 2000, only open five days a week (closed for lunch) and an indeterminate staffing level for duties in the town. In the past 150 years, modern policing methods have changed dramatically through the introduction of mobile patrols, new technology, shorter working hours and fewer points of personal contact, with the result that the friendly neighbourhood constable epitomised by the TV image of Dixon of Dock Green has all but disappeared. “Dash Cams” to Combat “Crash for Cash” Claims Welcome to the motoring section and this month I am going to be raising the question of the value of “dash cams” in vehicles. “Dash cams” are small video recording devices, which come in a wide range of complexity and can be positioned around your car, including the dashboard, to record any incidents that occur whilst driving. My driving school car covered just shy of 30,000 miles last year, not just me driving, but my pupils on my Intensive Driving Courses! In all those miles, I can recall one solitary incident where a driver of a white van in Grantham attempted what I strongly believe to be a “crash for cash”. For those who are not aware, there was an incredible surge in insurance claims a couple of years ago, which often included costly compensation fees for a variety of medical reasons, all of which were strongly believed to be false and were deliberate

crashes for cash claims, hence the name. Although not as frequent, I still hear these days of highly suspicious incidents from my driving instructor colleagues across the U.K. According to the Insurance Fraud Bureau, it is believed to cost purely innocent U.K. drivers hundreds of millions of pounds collectively each year. If you look carefully in front and rear windscreens, you will notice that “dash cams” are increasingly being used by drivers, not only to combat this problem of fraudulent claims, but also simply to record the variety of dangerous, careless and inconsiderate driving that is occurring on the roads these days. They come in a range of prices, matching how smart the technology is, and they should be serious food-for-thought for any drivers out there in Bourne, Deeping and surrounding areas who actually take pride in their “no claims bonus”.

Nene Outdoors (Peterborough) Re-opens under New Management Following a temporary closure at the end of 2015, the Nene Outdoors Water sports and Activity Centre re-opened at the beginning of March under the management of Nene Park Trust. Situated on Gunwade Lake in Ferry Meadows next to the Lakeside Kitchen and Bar and the Rutland Cycling Hire Shop, the water sports currently on offer at Nene Outdoors include: Sailing, Windsurfing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Raft building, Pedalo football, Paddle boarding. In taking over management of the centre, the Trust hopes to build on the core water sports offered and link this with its existing outdoor education, forest schools and events and activities programme.
