Welcome to the July edition of... It is always really heartening for me to hear that people are prepared to spend hours, even days, putting themselves through pain and inconvenience, just to raise money for others. Here, at “Discovering Bourne”, we are always happy to share the news of how the particular activity turned out, so this month, please step forward Yvonne Roberts and her “Macmillan Walkers”, along with all of the late Ashley Woolf’s supporters, fund-raising in his memory. Both stories are covered in this issue. This month, we bring news of Bourne’s Alder Veterinary Practice planning to expand, whilst our “School Spotlight” shines on one of the town’s real gems, the extraordinary Willoughby School. In a town like Bourne, there always needs to be vibrant activity in the retail sector, and empty shop premises are neither very useful to anyone, nor are they pleasing on the eye. So, this month we’re “deli - ghted” to feature Vintage Deli Delights and welcome them into the town - a wonderful addition for all us specialist cheese and olives lovers.

Midsummer, and the only “midsummer madness” this year seems to be coming in the form of the weather. Torrential downpours throughout June caused floods in parts. Those red “ER Out” road signs, (to direct drivers along their “evacuation route”) were almost called upon, as Spalding High School became inundated recently … and refuge was sought on the higher ground to the west! Seen in a recent magazine, and causing consternation, are the following job titles: “Organisational Development Consultant” and “Assistant Director for an operational transaction service company”. Please get in touch, if anyone has the slightest idea what might be involved here – maybe employment opportunities within the “Department of Plain English”? Let’s hope that this month’s assembly of features and regular articles do not cause you such problems, and that, once the European Championships have come and gone, we sporting fans can still feel the glow of having won a rugby union test series in Australia for the first time ever. Yeee Haaa! Enjoy the beer (Ooops, sorry, I mean enjoy the read!)

Happy Holiday Bodies – Advice from Renu Time to get ready for that much-anticipated summer holiday. Make the most of it with these quick tips:

Invest in your beach wear Does the thought of walking around in your swimwear fill you with dread? If the answer is yes, then you are certainly not alone. My top tip would be to determine your body shape and invest some time in buying the best suited to you. Co-ordinating beach shoes, bag, cover-up or sarong can fill you with confidence and make you the most glamorous by the pool, even if you are not the skinniest. The “Renu Swimsuit Challenge” will give you lots of ideas and tips on how to look your best on the beach. Make your feet presentable One good pedicure is all it takes to get your feet ready for flip-flops. Once professional hands have done the basic hard work, you can get by for weeks. Discover your glow A glowing and radiant skin takes the emphasis from any lumpy bits. Lizard skin elbows and knees are never a good look. A good exfoliation and daily moisturisation will produce a soft, supple and glowing skin. The right self-tanning

product will both moisturise and even out skin tone, making cellulite and broken veins less noticeable. We have lots of options, but my favourites are Decleor Natural Glow or Fake Bake Tanning serum with coconut oil. Neither of them have a “fake tan” smell and both produce a very natural golden glow. The Renu team will happily advise you. Boost your crowning glory You’ll want your hair to be at its best while you’re away. You might think you can economise by leaving this until after you return from your holidays, but get your hair in good shape and condition before you go away, and you’ll be doing yourself a favour. Book yourself in for a trim to make sure its free of split ends and looks healthy and full of vitality. Take the sweat from your brows Make-up can transform your face, but when it’s hot and humid, even the most experienced can struggle to avoid panda eyes, especially during the day when sun, sea and sand are in

the equation. A spot of expert eyebrow shaping and tinting is the sort of quick beauty fix that sounds utterly superfluous … until you try it. Although there are plenty of waterproof mascaras around, they can often make your lashes feel rather clogged and are quite difficult to remove. An eyelash tint subtly enhances your lashes, so that you can get away with wearing no mascara during the day.

Dubai Dream Holiday Whether you would prefer to relax and soak up the sunshine or embrace your adventurous side, Dubai is the perfect location for a summer holiday. There is no place in the world as diverse and rich in variety as this spectacular city. Here are just some of the things you can get involved in on your summer break in Dubai.

Eat with locals or take a gourmet tour of the world

• Dubai is one of the world’s most exciting dining destinations; a sprawling city with unparalleled multicultural cuisine. • Simple street-side Arabic cuisine of Zaroob and legendary Pakistani hotspot, Ravi. • On Fridays, most restaurants across town open their doors for brunch – a Dubai institution, where family and friends gather for a long lunch. • Pay a visit to Mercury Lounge for Downtown skyline views; 360º to gaze at the iconic Burj Al Arab. If you’re looking for atmosphere, I recommend a table in the clouds at At.mosphere on Level 122 of the Burj Khalifa, and the Jetty Lounge for relaxed seaside and iconic Palm Jumeirah vistas.

million square feet), you can shop ‘til you drop. No one mall is the same as the other; the Ibn Battuta Mall (named after the Arabic explorer) is country themed, and you can also head across town to the Pharaonic Wafi Mall. You must see the stunning waterfall and Aquarium at The Dubai Mall too!

Beach bliss

Dubai has fun in the sun for everyone — especially with all the amazing watersport and beach activities on offer. Dubai’s glorious sandy beaches, warm Arabian Gulf waters and year-round sunshine are the perfect ingredients for

• Bazerkan, Capitol Hill is a chain of Lebanese eateries offering authentic dishes and fun experiences. • Aprons & Hammers, Dubai International Marine Club is the perfect casual seafood spot. • Al Qasr is a traditional Middle Eastern restaurant serving fantastic Lebanese cuisine.

Shopping Capital of the world

Nowhere is Dubai’s harmony of old and new more evident than in its incredible shopping scene. With over ninety-five shopping malls (the largest of which is The Dubai Mall at more than twelve 6

anyone looking to be in the sun and near the water. There is no more glamorous way to soak up the sun than by lazing on a cushioned lounger on the beachfront and making full use of the waiter service available. Amazing waterparks; Aquaventure at Atlantis (with a slide that cuts through the middle of a shark tank!), and Wild Wadi at Jumeirah Beach Hotel are also “a must” when visiting Dubai.

Family Fun for everyone

If you’re looking for a value-packed holiday for your family, Dubai is the ideal destination.

Families can head out on a desert safari across the dunes in a four-wheel drive, or go sand boarding, ride a camel or handle a falcon, whilst enjoying Emirati hospitality at a sumptuous buffet! Grab a prime position along Burj Khalifa Lake to watch the recordbreaking Dubai fountain show that kicks off every half hour from 6pm outside The Dubai Mall. Hotel kids’ clubs and theme parks such as KidZania in The Dubai Mall ensure that parents are guaranteed some quiet time, knowing their little ones are in safe hands and off having the times of their lives!

Discover Dubai’s Culture and Art In Dubai, modern and historic culture are celebrated in equal measure. You can visit the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), where you’ll learn of local customs and enjoy a traditional Emirati meal.

Ride across the Creek in a wooden abra (boat) and admire the traditional dhow fishing boats that line the waterway.

Outdoor Sports and Adventure

Dubai offers so many opportunities if you’re seeking adventure. Gallop across the desert on an Arabian thoroughbred or tee off on a floodlit golf course at midnight, and, if you’re feeling extremely brave, jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet. Hot-air balloon rides over Dubai’s desert landscape offer amazing views. A similar – albeit faster – sky-high experience is also offered by Skydive Dubai from its desert campus at Margham. Dubai is horse-mad, with stables all across the emirate. Head to the Al Sahra Desert Resort Equestrian Centre or Al Jiyad Stables to ride horseback across the desert at sunset. A desert safari is another popular venture, as is sand boarding on the Big Red dune – Dubai’s ‘black run’. There are plenty of watersports to enjoy in Dubai, which can be very refreshing in the high summer heat. Cyclists aren’t forgotten about either, with 140 kilometres of track in

neighbourhoods, such as Jumeirah and Bur Dubai to explore.

Events

From sport to art, music and food, there’s always an event on in Dubai. The internationally renowned Dubai Rugby Sevens and the lavish Dubai World Cup Carnival are staple sporting events, while the Emirates Literature Festival, Dubai Art Season, Dubai International Film Festival and Dubai Jazz Festival round off the major arts offerings. Foodies should not miss the Dubai Food Festival, while fitness enthusiasts can partake in the annual Dubai Marathon or Cycle Challenge.

Macmillan Way Challenge met by Bourne Ladies – (to the tune of £2,500!) With blistered feet and occasionally feeling utterly exhausted, Bourne’s Yvonne Roberts and Lilian Vaughan, (along with their friends, Christine Caston from Rippingale and her sister, Marie Caston from Deeping), managed to complete an epic two hundred and ninety mile trek, across the heart of England, from Boston in Lincolnshire to Abbotsbury on the Dorset coast. Setting off on Easter Monday, the quartet followed the scenically splendid Macmillan Way, and within

three weeks, had reached their goal, all with the aim of raising much-needed money for the Macmillan Nurses. Yvonne’s individual contribution reached an amazing £2466.26, whilst those of the three other ladies will take that figure even higher. Recounting her experiences recently, Yvonne is still reeling from how beautiful she found so much of our English countryside, as well as how she found so much inner strength to continue when it got tough, such as the one day when they covered almost twenty miles! The friendliness and generosity of strangers who “chucked it in the bucket”, as the ladies walked past, was an enduring memory. She spoke very highly of all of those who helped in any way, by sponsoring her or by offering moral support, but especially her husband Taff, without whom, it would never have materialised. His task was to provide, with his support caravan, everything that a

logistical challenge like this requires, be it cooking, cleaning, transporting and meeting up, cajoling and inspiring, or even just ensuring that the wine was waiting, suitably chilled at the end of the day! To the gentleman from Baston who rang to offer his support, (but who missed the walkers on the Kate’s Bridge riverbank), Yvonne sends her thanks. Finally, from us all at Discovering Bourne, an enormous welldone, ladies, on what was a magnificent effort.

Remembering Ashley - in Bourne Eight months have passed since the much-loved and respected Manager of Smiths of Bourne, Ashley Woolf, died at the age of thirty. Amidst the understandable grief at the time, it was soon decided, by close friends and family, that his memory would be honoured by a number of money-raising activities, principally to provide items for the Oncology Ward at Peterborough City Hospital, where Ashley had been bravely fighting his battle against cancer. Bourne’s premier health club, The Universal Fitness Centre on Cherry Holt Road, was the recent venue for a “Spinathon” and a class marathon on consecutive days, both of over four hours duration. Classes included “Legs, bums and

tums”, Tabata, Kettlebell, Insanity, Fitsteps and Zumba. Money was raised through donations to participate and also through sponsorship, and an impressive total of £1313.48 was achieved. The other main event centred on The Jubilee Garage, just across the road from Smiths, whose first Beer Festival, held over the Easter week-end, was an enormous success. Over £1200 was raised, as a result of donations, a raffle and a quiz. Ashley’s mother, Anita, and girlfriend, Katie, have requested that the money raised should go towards the purchase of iPads or for the provision of free Wi-Fi for patients on the Oncology Ward at P.C.H.

Pictured at the cheque presentation to Sam O’Connell, (Deputy Sister Haematology/ Oncology at P.C.H.) are, from left to right: Louis Taylor, (Instructor at Universal Fitness), Anita Woolf, Chris Ward, (Manager at Smiths), Katie Compton, Sam O’Connell, Mark Jones, (Manager at The Jubilee Garage).

And Remembering Ashley - in France At the time of writing, a group of twelve people, all united in their love of motoring and in their respect for the sadly departed Ashley Woolf, will be involved in a six-day French adventure,(and nothing to do with the European Football Championships either!) The group will be heading for the “Le Mans 24 Hour” motor-racing spectacle, something which Ashley had previously loved and had been wanting to repeat this year. One of the “daring dozen”, Dan Lakin, takes up the story: “When Ashley was sadly diagnosed with cancer we said we’d definitely go this year, hopefully with him but, if the worst should happen, we’d go for him. We had an Ashley Woolf Racing logo designed and got sponsorship from BAR Events UK (an events company) and H&S Commercial Services

(Chartered Surveyors), then got our cars branded up for the road trip! We also had T-shirts made and created a hash tag #ashleywoolfracing to create on-line awareness. Our plan is to go to a parade in the centre of Le Mans and then catch the race at the week-end. We have a fantastic campsite planned, consisting of tents, a huge marquee, draught beer and vodka systems with generator, and a sound and lighting system. Ashley wanted to make our next trip more epic so we’ve tried our best!

We hope to see many people tagging and sharing #ashleywoolfracing in memory of a Le Mans legend, and a truly nice, kind and generous guy.” Cars & Drivers: Audi S3 - Dan Lakin & Laura Lakin Audi S3 - Craig Spratt & Natasha Spratt BMW 3 series - Stuart Spratt & Andy Woolf BMW Z4 - Glyn Spratt & Rachel Bateman BMW 3 series - Matt Lakin & Simon Davies Chrysler Crossfire - Jemma Dodd & Andrew Henderson.

Bo-Jangles Hosts Heidi Rock’s Fund-Raiser Local Bourne resident and mother of two daughters, Heidi Rock, 35, is courageously battling cancer for the second time. It is hoped that a visit to the Budwig Centre in Spain will give Heidi some hope of seeing her daughters become adults and, to that end, the “Heidi Rock Budwig Cancer Treatment Fund” has been established. This centre uses alternative therapies that were developed by Dr. Johanna Budwig, a German biochemist. The clinic gives hope and has treated many terminal patients to increase the quality and length of their lives. The very public-spirited Bo-Jangles Studio in Bourne, are hosting a “Make-up Masterclass” with New Cid cosmetics, with all the proceeds going towards Heidi’s Fund. There will be a make-up tutorial, an opportunity to ask any questions and a clothes rail with various items to purchase. A raffle has also been organised and generous donations have come in from a number of businesses in Bourne and the surrounding area. A report will appear in next month’s “Discovering Bourne”.

Bourne verses Rhyme, (Bourne-v-Rhyme) A new poetry group for Bourne is growing, from strength to strength, and all completely by chance. Joy, a retired registered nurse, and Steph, a civil servant, take up the story: “Until recently, we had never met before, let alone formed any group. We are now firm friends and excited by the response from other established poets. We both saw a post on a local social media site, asking if there was a poetry group in Bourne. Realising there were no evening poetry groups here, we set up our first meeting in January this year. After that, we advertised the group on posters around town. As it transpired, word of mouth travelled faster and further, and the power of the spoken word laid the foundations for the group. Defining ourselves as a friendly, social group, the relaxed environment soon prompted some to read self- penned poetry, whilst others just sat back and listened to enjoy. Some have even discovered hidden talents, and new friendships have been forged. There are published poets, alongside people reading enchanting favourites. We haven’t all “wandered lonely as a cloud”, as poetry seems to be in every television advert and every song lyric!

10

D I S C O V E R I N G

Poetry is currently very much in the spotlight, and neighbouring towns have thriving ‘Open mike’ sessions. Who knows, in the future, we may also venture into ‘Open mike’ evenings, if the group expands. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month in Smiths, on Bourne’s North Street, at 7pm in the front bar, then we move to another bar until 9pm. (Don’t worry, we always tell the bar staff where we are!) We welcome new members, either on a regular basis or for the occasional visit. If you would like to know more, visit our Facebook page, Bourne-v-Rhyme. Alternatively, pop along to one of our meetings, where you will receive a warm welcome – and you may be pleasantly surprised!” After all, to mis-quote W. H. Davies: “What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to … read and share poetry?” (Ed.)

Wellhead Practice Excellence in head to toe Complementary Healthcare

Practitioner Profile – Ian Jenkinson

What made you consider a career in osteopathy? I’d suffered from back pain myself since I was sixteen years old. I tried physiotherapy and chiropractic treatments but the only one that worked for me was osteopathy. After fifteen years working for various charities, including Barnardo’s, Cancer Research UK and British Heart Foundation, I wanted a new challenge where I could directly impact and improve people’s lives – so osteopathy seemed like the ideal choice! Where did you study your degree and where do you practise now? I completed the five year Master’s degree course at the

London School of Osteopathy. It was hard work, having to combine the course and the 1,300 clinic hours with working for the RFU and having a young family – but thankfully, I survived and obtained a Master of Osteopathy degree (M.Ost) with Distinction. On qualifying, I was initially treating NHS patients referred by GPs across Lincolnshire but, since September last year, I’ve been enjoying working at The Wellhead Clinic and meeting all the friendly and welcoming people in Bourne. My future plans are to create my own practice in the Newark area, but that’s a long way off at the moment.

What do you enjoy most about osteopathy? The thing I love most is the way you can transform someone’s wellbeing and quality of life. Every day, I get to help someone walk more easily so they can keep getting out into town, reduce their pain so they aren’t reliant on painkillers, or get someone back to doing something they love, like running, golf, bowls or even just knitting. It’s rewarding, yet really challenging at the same time. I really enjoy working with patients, not to just get them out of pain, but to help them stay pain-free and, hopefully, to be better than they were before. Every patient brings a new problem to solve with different issues, so that definitely keeps me on my toes trying to do the best for everyone who comes to see me. Okay, so when you are not fixing people what do you like doing? I’m definitely kept busy by my two children and, like a lot of people in their forties, I’m not as fit as I’d like to be – so I’ve signed up for a 100-mile charity bike ride, so you may occasionally see me riding, very slowly, on my bike!

The Beardwood Practice, Clinical Hypotherapy by Christine Beardwood

Control Stress and Anxiety with Clinical Hypnotherapy

A

Feeling anxious and stressed out?

feeling of anxiety every day without knowing what it relates to is called “free floating anxiety”. You might find yourself feeling irritable and frustrated, suffering from insomnia, with less patience, along with an increased consumption of alcohol and/or cigarettes. Anxiety and stress can manifest itself in many ways: nervousness; panic attacks; insomnia; overly worrying about something that may never happen, etc. It can have a crippling effect by bringing on a range of symptoms, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), skin complaints or negative patterns, such as over-eating, drinking and smoking . Is anxiety sneaking up on you? Anxiety can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly. Some people who’ve been fully in control of their lives suddenly find they can’t leave their own home, can’t work or even drive their car. For some, it’s simply a matter of feeling negative or underconfident.

Anti-smoking hypnotherapy takes one session, lasting up to two hours; it includes a CD and no initial consultation is necessary.

QUIT SMOKING FOR GOOD Many people ask me if hypnotherapy can help them give up smoking. Well, hypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking available. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good by using your imagination to create a non-smoking future which is positive, empowering and allows you to take control not only of your smoking habits but of your life. The Beardwood Practice’s stop smoking hypnotherapy formula works regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke or how long you have been smoking. The stop smoking treatment is tailored to you as an individual and is a relaxing, comfortable experience.

The hypnotherapy allows guided relaxation, showing a preferred future and because the subconscious part of the brain, (the part that’s in charge of our reactions), doesn’t understand the difference between imagination and reality, the guided relaxation starts to bring calm and control back into our lives. You will learn how to prevent negative stress, how to identify increased levels of stress, and how to deal with the situation and how to prevent it reaching debilitating levels in a positive and responsible way. Whatever the cause of stress and anxiety, the treatment is tailored to the individual. 16

D I S C O V E R I N G

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session works by first explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change, during which the client experiences around forty-five minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process, the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation. The treatment is tailored to you as an individual so you can get the best out of your life and helps you to realise your full potential, in a relaxed comfortable environment. “Regain your health, wealth and wellbeing” If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@ beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk

A quick tip to improve the strike of your pitch shot Garden Centre head to make contact with the ball, opposed to

One of the common errors with pitching is too steep an angle of attack of the club into the strike, resulting in a digging action, often causing a fatted shot. To help your strike, you need a shallower delivery of the club head into the ball, a shallower path. Here is a tip that will help you to achieve this. When you make your swing, think of making a loop with the head of the club. As you take the club away on the backswing, think of the club head looping outwards, away from you. Then, on the downswing, think of looping the club head inwards (or towards your body), thus creating a shallower angle of attack into the ball. If you get it slightly wrong and you hit the ground before the ball, the bounce of the club will still allow the club

– Bourne’s Latest Star on “Deli Alley” Memories of childhood often prompt us to do special things with our own life, and Bourne’s latest shopkeeper, Darren Williamson, proves the point. He remembers with great affection how, with his grandfather, he would visit his local grocer’s shop and spend hours, just talking and taking time to choose their wares. So, to reproduce that same feeling in his recently opened “Vintage Deli Delights” in Bourne’s Burghley Centre has been Darren’s prime aim. All ages, and not just the older customers, are already calling in for a chat and to browse the range of fabulous foodstuffs on display. The “vintage vibe” is created by a tasteful collection of artefacts, including the old pushbike on the wall, scales and any number of old wooden crates and boxes. The chairs and single table, beautifully set for display purposes, are seen by some as the opportunity to sit and gossip. Both Darren and his charming assistant, Maxine Hollands, encourage this. It’s not easy to sit for long though, when the display cabinets and chillers are stocked with such wonderful and, at times, quirky fare. Scotch eggs

(some actually called “Old Fart” and “Tickled Pink”) attract the eye, as do the deliciously appealing olives and pasta pots beside them. Cold meats and Norfolk pork pies, “Skegness Blue” and Lincolnshire Brie, charcoal cheese and shelves full of chutneys and jams, baguettes and paninis, hot pies and pasties – the list goes on, (with almost all of the produce either locally or U.K. sourced). Some have already been “spurred” on to re-name this part of the Burghley Centre, “Deli Alley”!

Words from the Mayor Words from the New Mayor – Councillor Colin Pattison Hello everyone and please allow me to introduce myself, as your new Mayor and Chairman of Bourne Town Council for 2016-17. This “very proud Bourne boy”, now just turned 49, has been a resident of the town for life, having attended Bourne Abbey Road Primary and then Bourne Grammar School. I am married to Fiona, not only my wonderful wife, but my “rock”. I currently work for Mid U.K. Recycling Ltd where I am Site Supervisor at our Honey Pot Lane Composting Facility, converting low-hazard bio-degradable green waste (what we put in our green bins) into agricultural grade soil improvers. My wife works for Openfield Agriculture, also on Honey Pot Lane, Colsterworth.

cricket, football (Liverpool F.C. and the mighty Posh) and most winter sports. I succeeded our previous Mayor, Councillor Phillip Knowles on Tuesday May 24th at The Bourne Town Council A.G.M. in the Corn Exchange. This was a very proud and humbling moment for me in front of fellow council colleagues, friends, family and invited guests. Thank you to all who attended and for all the kind comments and well wishes.

My interests include fishing (member of the Pike Angling Club of Great Britain), walking, bird watching, astronomy, keen member of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), rugby union (founding member of Bourne Rugby Club and follower of Leicester Tigers),

EARLY EVENTS June 5th - saw the Civic Service, conducted by Father Chris and his ministry team at Bourne Abbey Church – a wonderful occasion, well attended by several visiting dignitaries,(very complimentary about our “nice and pretty” town). June 6th – in attendance, as the British Empire Medal was presented to Mrs Dorothy Alexander,(for her life-long contributions to the town) by Mr Toby Dennis, Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire. Well done Dorothy, an absolute credit to yourself, your family and the Bourne community in general. June 10th - invited by The Round Table of Bourne to open the annual “Bourne Festival 2016” on the Wellhead Field and very warmly greeted by Rob Mason (President). A huge “well-done” to everyone,(Tablers, helpers, volunteers) involved in such “challenging” conditions. As always, Norman Brown, as M.C, kept the evening ticking along magnificently. 26

I wish to say a “big well done and thank you” to Phillip and his lovely wife Norma. One of the main jobs this month involves harvesting and enjoying the result of all the hard work of spring and early summer. It is time to lift garlic: hang bulbs out in the sun or in an airy shed. Last year, I learned to plait them by using a tutorial on YouTube and was enjoying their freshness for several months after – they were so much better than those from the supermarket! Fortuitously, the garlic harvest coincides with that of tomatoes. Given some basil (and a few olives) you have the makings of many delicious Italian dishes. Basil needs warm growing conditions and now is the time to plant: you can buy the pots from the supermarket and plant those out. Onions also need drying well before they are stored: a few days before harvesting, loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry day to lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun. Don’t be tempted to store them until they are thoroughly dry, as they will not keep as long and probably rot. Maybe you will have time for a cuppa whilst working (or a glass of Pimms!) – sit back in the sunshine, listen to the birds and marvel over the crops you have grown: there’s nothing more rewarding than a meal of home grown produce. Enjoy!

DO NOT HUG YOUR DOG?

A recent report from an eminent human psychologist who has canine interests says that we should not hug our dogs . But what do you do when your dog insists on hugging you? When I am sitting on the settee at night, I am covered in dogs wanting cuddles and attention.

not the dumb animals that I heard described on a recent radio programme. They may not be able to talk, but they communicate to us in so many other ways.

This research was carried out by looking at pictures posted on the internet of owners cuddling their dogs, and then assessing the dogs’ reaction, in relation to known dog behaviour . The argument is that, because dogs are cursorial (designed for running ) that immobilising a dog with a hug will cause it stress. In the study, 81.6% of pictures showed one or more signs of distress, 7.6 % of pictures showed pleasure, whilst 10.8 % displayed neither. There is no doubt in my mind that dogs enjoy hugs but, as with humans, this has to be by mutual consent and at the right time . How often do we see children being hugged by an elderly relative when they have not consented to it? You get the same look that dogs give when they have not consented. There is a valid point here that we should not assume our pets want hugs or even attention from us, all the time . We have to invite each other to make contact and interaction. We very much underestimate our dogs. They have a full emotional landscape and are

I think the study done with these pictures on the internet is fundamentally flawed, in that many of these pictures were initiated by the dogs’ owners to show their loving relationship with their pet, and have thus been staged. I am sure that things would have looked different if the pictures had been taken in a more natural setting . We should also remember that most dogs do not like being lifted up, and that even consented hugs are better at the dog’s level. The fact that 7.6% of pictures showed pleasure indicates that dogs do find hugs enjoyable in the right situation. There is one area that needs careful attention. That is when young children hug dogs. Young children have not yet learned that there are situations when hugs are not wanted, and dogs are often wary of the unpredictable nature of young children. It is not uncommon for young children to be bitten when hugging a dog and this is because the dog has not consented. Your relationship with your dog is not dissimilar to that with a close family member, so go out there and enjoy those hugs (when mutually needed!)

The Alder Veterinary Practice – Looking to Expand Now well into their second year on Bourne’s Exeter Street, Wayne Smith and his team of veterinary surgeons, nurses and administrators are looking to build further on to the strong foundations established so far. The enthusiastic, and entirely compassionate, Mr Smith is seeking to expand into a wider area of South Lincolnshire, thus enabling more pet owners to access his team’s enviable skills and expertise, in order to enhance their pet’s life and ensure they stay healthy, without having to cost them the earth! The Alder Practice pride themselves on the level of service offered to all clients and their pets, specialising in some orthopaedic procedures,

as well as reptile and exotic animal consultations. All of the veterinary surgeons have many years’ experience in practice and all participate in in-service training. The vitally important veterinary nurses in the practice are given the opportunity to further develop their expertise too. Increasingly, many complicated operations and procedures are therefore able to be carried out at the surgery, reducing the need for very expensive referrals elsewhere. To facilitate this, considerable investment in specialist equipment has also been required. It can sometimes be difficult to keep up with your pet’s veterinary care, especially if they need extensive treatment or fall ill unexpectedly. For that reason, the Alder Practice offers guaranteed sameday appointments if your pet needs an urgent check-up or assessment. Additionally, deferred

40

payment schemes are available if your pet needs unexpected and expensive treatment. “Every animal has a right to life, unless in permanent pain or a danger to society” is Wayne’s philosophy. So, when he hears of animals being in danger of being put to sleep, purely as a result of the owner being unable to pay for treatment, his hackles are raised. A solution must be sought and his deferred payment scheme, along with newly introduced, “Flexible Health Plans”, are designed to alleviate such a threat. One section of their mightily impressive web-site (www.alder-vets.co.uk) includes many fascinating personal details about the “families” of all the staff

at the Alder Practice. Just how many pets, their names, and the wide range cared for by them, is glowing testimony as to how they are, as caring human beings – clearly the type of people in whom you can feel confident of laying your trust, when your own pet is in their hands. There are times when injured wild animals and birds, along with stray pets, find their way to Wayne’s door, and he is increasingly making the journey to Lincoln, to the Weirfield Wildlife Hospital. At this specialist centre, they are able to treat, and usually return to the wild, those damaged creatures, for whom Wayne feels so much sympathy, whilst the strays can hopefully be re-homed.

Retirement: Valuable Pensions Advice

Anyone who is accumulating wealth for retirement needs to have a good close look at their current pension contract(s). There are many “closed companies”, (i.e. companies who do not sell any new contracts but buy failing insurance companies and look after their existing ones), whose charges are often high and whose investment returns tend to be below average. If you ask yourself the question, “If I had £10,000 in my bank account, earning 0.25% interest per year, would I look to change it?” if the answer is yes, then why wouldn’t you look at the £50,000 in your pension account? On charges alone, a saving of 1% per year would result in a 22% bigger pot in twenty years’ time. Putting it simply, I cannot stress too much just how important retirement

planning is - one day you will want to retire, especially if many of your friends are doing so. If you have not made sufficient provision by that time, it is unlikely that you will be able to do so from that point onwards. Bear in mind that, to get an income of £10,000 per year, you are likely to need a pot of £200,000. If your employer offers a scheme (and if they don’t, they soon will – it’s the law) then join it - your employer will pay into it alongside your own contributions, so you can think of it as a pay rise! If your bank offered a special account where you paid in £40 and the government paid in a further £10, and then the bank more or less doubled that amount, there would be a queue around the block to open one - this, effectively, is what your employer is offering.

And for those approaching retirement, it’s even more important. You can take the pension on offer from your existing provider, but it’s unlikely to be a good deal or offer much in the way of flexibility. The choices have increased massively, especially since April 2015, so you can even take your whole pot out as a single lump sum if you like, although the Inland Revenue will love you for it! If you have any concerns or questions about your pension arrangements, feel free to give us a call on the number below and explore your options. We promise to do the best for you and work to your own circumstances and needs, not those of a faceless insurance company.

❱ PROPERTY NEWs

by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell

Joining the Newton Fallowell Team Adventures in property: I’m Philip Bell, the new Senior Valuer here at Bourne and I’ve been in estate agency since the early 2000s, for my sins! I have seen the market rise dramatically, fall from grace and rise again. Right now, there is a lot of talk of what will happen if we vote to stay in Europe or choose to go. Both sides promise many things, but the uncertainty is what upsets the housing market and gives us all the jitters. Regardless of which side of the fence you and I are on, life will go on. Here at Newton Fallowell, I’m expecting the housing market to stay the course. The top motivators for moving house can’t be stopped by a “Brexit” or by the “EU”, for that matter. Families will still grow, meaning an upsize move will be needed for the kids. When they do finally leave home, mum and dad will still consider a downsize move. Young couples will still dream of owning their own home and will want to get on the ladder. That new

job or promotion may see us moving across the country or even out of the country. There is a lot that keeps us moving in life and that’s why we, here at Newton Fallowell, are looking forward to a busy summer helping you all get where you want to be. Family matters and, regardless of what may or may not happen, an experienced and skilled estate agent will be key to ensuring that your most valuable possession realises its true potential. Here at Newton Fallowell, we pride ourselves on providing a fantastic service and I look forward to working with you over the coming months in a strong and dynamic market. Should you want to make a move, make sure you talk to us this summer.

❱ THE TECHNOLOGY sITE

by TAFF LOVESEY, LITES PC

Microsoft Product Lifecycle Explained With the constant nagging of PC users to install Windows10, a question I am often asked is how long a user can expect to receive support for their current operating system, if they reject the upgrade. This is one area where Microsoft are actually very open and public, and it can be found on their Product Lifecycle information page. To quote Microsoft themselves, “Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy provides consistent and predictable guidelines for product support availability when a product releases and throughout that product’s life. By understanding the product support available, customers are better able to maximize the management of their IT investments and strategically plan for a successful IT future.” Uniquely, they have not only been open about it, but also explained it in fairly plain English! You can find Microsoft’s Product Lifecycle information online on their web site at: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/lifecycle/ search This service will allow you to search for the lifecycle information of any Microsoft product. The most common question asked however relates to the Windows operating system support itself, so here are the dates that are currently published by Microsoft. IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk

46

So what does this mean in general terms? The key date for a home or small business user is the ‘End of Extended Support’ date. This is where Microsoft completely turn its back on a version, providing no further support or security fixes. Some may remember that it did this for XP on April 8th 2014, and now anyone using XP online is open to hackers and scammers as the product is over two years ‘out of support’. It truly is a high risk to anyone still using XP online. (Note: Microsoft do offer support to many banks and government agencies on XP, but at a very inflated cost and this is not extended to the general XP release.) As large business and government customers rely heavily on these published dates, Microsoft tend to stick to them fairly rigidly and they rarely change. Given this fact, it makes me question why Microsoft are so aggressive about Windows 7 and 8 users upgrading to Windows 10 as they are already committed to supporting it until 2020 and 2023 respectively.

Eight Years and Counting… Belinda Smith & Co celebrated their eighth anniversary in business on June 1st this year. Belinda Smith, who lives in Kirkby Underwood and spent her formative years in the Grantham area, set up on her own after leaving Buckles Solicitors in Peterborough, where she had been a partner for over twenty years. In 2012, she was joined by another star from the Buckles family department, now her Associate, Michele Fielding, who lives in Peterborough. Together, the two of them have over fifty years’ experience in the field of family law. Belinda Smith & Co have been based for the last six years in Asset House, a spacious modern building opposite the police station in Thorpe Wood, Peterborough. The practice has never been busier, as their excellent reputation spreads ever wider.

Belinda and Michele together cover every aspect of family law which is not legally aided. The majority of clients come for advice, following a relationship breakdown, be that in marriage or cohabitation, but there is also a large part of the practice that deals with children’s issues. Belinda has had many years’ experience as a children’s law practitioner on the Law Society Children Panel, and acting in care proceedings, as well as a wide range of private law proceedings. Both Belinda and Michele are collaboratively law-trained and will always choose the path of amicable settlement, if their clients allow them! Whether it is the traditional route or the mediation/ collaboration option, Belinda Smith & Co will provide you with the highest quality of legal services in this sensitive area of legal practice.

Belinda says, “It seems that it is absolutely true that success breeds success, and although it is tempting to expand and take on a third feeearner, I would rather that we maintain our ethos of being a specialist family law practice who is able, right from that first telephone enquiry from a client, to see a case through to the last day of a court hearing, if that proves necessary”.

Football World Cup Winners

– July 30th 1966 – F ifty Y ears On Fifty years have passed since that glorious summer’s day in July 1966, when the Jules Rimet trophy was held aloft in the hand of, arguably, England’s greatest captain, Bobby Moore. On that afternoon, at Wembley Stadium, Sir Alf Ramsey’s England side had triumphed over a very powerful West Germany 4-2. See how your memory, or that of your dad, has stood the test of time, with the following teasers: 1.

Geoff Hurst famously scored a hat-trick. Who got the other England goal (Martin Peters, Bobby Charlton or Roger Hunt)?

2.

Who captained the West German team in the Final (Franz Beckenbauer, Uwe Seeler or Willi Schulz)?

3.

Which team played in black and white on the day (England or West Germany)?

4.

Of England’s starting XI in the 1966 Final, which players have since died?

5.

Why were the Germans not as keen on Tofiq Bakhramov, (from Azerbaijan) as were the English players and fans?

6. What nationality was the World Cup Final referee Gottfried Dienst (French, Austrian or Swiss)?

7.

Which sports commentator is forever associated with the Final, (David Coleman, Barry Davies or Kenneth Wolstenholme)?

8.

Complete the famous line, uttered by the commentator on the day:

“And here comes Hurst. He’s got... some people - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - , they think it’s all over. It is now! It’s four!” (can’t bear to look, are on the pitch, are too drunk to care).

Meanwhile, life went on, away from Wembley Stadium …. 9.

Who was the Prime Minister at the time (Edward Heath, Margaret Thatcher, Harold Wilson or James Callaghan)?

11. Approximately how many gallons of petrol could you have bought for £5 (5, 10, 20 or 50)?

10.

Which song sat at Number 1 in the pop chart (“Getaway” by Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, “Out of Time” by Chris Farlowe, or “With a Girl Like You” by The Troggs)?

12.

Celebrating the wonderful victory might have involved the odd pint or ten of beer. Approximately, how many pints would a £5 investment have yielded (10, 20, 30 or 50)?

(They weren’t called “The good old days” for nothing! – Ed.) Answers: 1. Martin Peters, 2. Uwe Seeler, 3. West Germany, 4. Bobby Moore in 1993, Alan Ball in 2007, 5. As linesman, he allowed England’s controversial third goal in the final., 6. Swiss, 7. Kenneth Wolstenholme, 8. … “are on the pitch”, 9. Harold Wilson, 10. “Out of Time”, 11. 20, (with a gallon selling for about five shillings, 25p) 12. 50, ( when approximately two shillings, 10p, would have got you a pint of bitter).

advice from Double and Megson

Neighbours – Everybody needs them, but …. One of the most common causes of neighbour disputes involves boundaries. If you are unsure as to where your boundary is, or who owns it, the starting point is always your title deeds. You should not hang things on your neighbour’s fence, neither use it as support for your plants, nor paint your side of it without their permission. There is no general legal requirement to maintain hedges. However, you should not allow unkempt hedges to block footpaths or obscure a motorist’s view. Your property may have a covenant, requiring you to maintain your hedge so you should check your deeds. Tall hedges may be covered by regulations under the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 and, if certain criteria apply, your Local Authority will, for a fee, assess the hedge and decide whether any action should be taken to reduce its height. Trees can add a great deal of character to a garden, but they can also cause a nuisance to a next door neighbour when they start encroaching

over the fence. If the branches of a neighbour’s tree start to grow over to your side, you can cut them back to the boundary between you and your neighbour’s property, as long as the tree is not under a tree preservation order, or in a conservation area. The branches and any fruit on them which you have cut down from your side still belong to the tree owner, so you must return them. You would be well-advised to have a word with your neighbour before trimming back the branches, to let them know your intentions. This will ensure that good neighbourly relations are preserved. Neighbour disputes can easily spiral out of control, so an amicable resolution to disputes is always the best route. Try to discuss the problem with them but, if you’re worried about approaching them, write a letter, explaining the problem.

10/06/2016

The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. The last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/ LASS), an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in one year, in the UK, having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame – 800. • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200. • The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure your barbecue is fun-filled and not a 12:13 flaming failure. • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture, such as wooden or plastic chairs. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space.

SUMMER SALE

• Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy. • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair. • To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be “fire-safety savvy”. Cathy Mellor

L

Founder of “Find Your Voice”, Mother of Three, Lake District Lover

ast month, we featured local lady Cathy Mellor, whose “Find Your Voice” scheme has recently seen her named, “South Kesteven Business Pioneer 2016”. Now, she has the opportunity to tell us more about this and to reveal some of her innermost thoughts, as she lounges luxuriously in our “Hot Seat”. Having worked for many years as a training specialist in a business environment, where presentation and communication skills were seen as invaluable and yet were often not taught, Cathy realised that, if children were given early access to these skills, it would be such an advantage in so many aspects of life. So, Cathy founded “Find Your Voice”, which provides classes and coaching for children, aged from six years to sixth form, in public speaking and communication skills. “Find Your Voice” is all about children learning to be excellent communicators and speakers, and her classes are proving tremendously popular … and successful, as her recent prestigious award as “Business Pioneer” of 2016 bears out. She has lived in Lincolnshire for twenty-five years and brought up a family here. They’ve all grown up in Bourne and are now seventeen, fourteen and ten years old. Two of Cathy and John’s children are adopted and, according to Cathy, “That has been one of the great privileges and joys of my life and has given me a huge interest and passion for helping children realise their potential.” She is a keen member of Stamford Shoestring Theatre and Stamford Shakespeare Company and has a great love of theatre, literature ….and gardening!

Q: Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? A: I was born in Preston, Lancashire. My favourite memory of childhood is playing outside for hours in the fields and by the local canal. We had such a carefree childhood. Q: Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? A: The greatest influence on my life has undoubtedly been my parents. They loved and supported me and gave me many of the values I hold dear. They taught me that the best things in life aren’t “things”.

Q: Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? A: I’d like to share a meal with Emmeline Pankhurst, to witness her pioneering spirit, inspirational speeches and hear about her achievement in securing Votes for Women, first

hand. I’d also like to meet my great-grandmother who lived in poverty in Liverpool and had none of the advantages I now enjoy. I’d like to hear how women of her generation felt about their lives. Q: How would you describe yourself in only five words? A: “I always try my best!” Q: If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why? A: The only thing I’d change about Bourne is that it would be nearer to Cumbria, where my family live and where there are mountains. It would help my lovely Mum, who drives the four hours here regularly at the age of seventy-nine! Q: What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”? A: I couldn’t put it better than Oscar Wilde … “Be yourself - everyone else is already taken.“ (For further details about “Find Your Voice”, please e-mail Cathy at CathyFYV@gmail.com)

BORED? WANT A CHALLENGE? AGED BETWEEN 12 and 18? When it comes to fun, action, adventure and socialisation, the Army Cadet Force (A.C.F.) is hard to beat. With over 41,000 cadets, in over 1600 locations all over the UK, the ACF is the country’s largest, and one of the oldest, youth organisations in the country, with its origins tracing back to 1859. We facilitate a wide range of activities, both military such as Drill, Skill at Arms and Field Craft, as well as non-military activities, such as first aid, navigation, expedition training, rock climbing, biking, kayaking, physical training … and much more. We aim to develop young adults into upstanding citizens, through character-building activities, and do so by both actively engaging them in the above subjects and integrating them in community projects, in and around the Bourne area. While the ACF is funded by the British Army, we do not pressure young cadets to join the military; we are a military-themed youth organisation. If a cadet wanted, or is interested in a future career with the military, we can offer expert career advice and

join the army cadets guidance. However, many of our cadets go on to a wide range of careers, post-ACF. As well as fun, personal development and adventure, we also offer a number of M.O.D subsidised qualifications, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, available from levels Bronze to Gold, and a BTEC in Public Services. The Army Cadet Detachment in Bourne is now recruiting for new cadets. We parade every Wednesday at The Cadet Hut, The Austerby, Bourne, between 18:45 and 21:00.

| Spotlight on Schools

The Willoughby School Willoughby School, caters for students with severe and profound learning needs. Students can join the school from the age of two and leave at nineteen, (which may rise to twenty-five if our proposed new provision is achieved). Our students come from a wide geographical area, covering south-west Lincolnshire and Rutland . All students have their own individual academic, pastoral and medical needs. Class sizes are small (ten maximum), with a class teacher and up to five teaching assistants supporting the teaching of the students, whilst also meeting their medical and care needs. The expectations of the school are very high, in line with our partners in the mainstream school sector. High standards of student attendance, dress, behaviour and learning are of the utmost importance. A huge emphasis is placed upon preparing our students for life beyond school. My own journey into Special Education is not unique. Like many people, I was aware of Special Education, but knew little else about it. Having taught mainstream PE for twelve years, I was seeking a new challenge. Encouraged by my wife who is a primary school teacher, I went to look

Above: Chistmas fun Right: Daniel and Phil

round a special school which was specifically looking to further their academic curriculum. From that very first visit, I immediately felt at home. What struck me from the outset was the friendly, positive and caring environment: the school felt like an extended family. The whole school community was working together to achieve the best academic and pastoral outcomes. Mainstream schools are under huge academic pressure, in a world that is dominated by A Levels and GCSE A* - C grades. Special schools have high expectations in all aspects of school life, but also offer a fully rounded curriculum. This must meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, but also attend to the specific needs of every individual student. At Willoughby, students study a broad range of subjects with an emphasis on Maths and English, but life skills and preparation for students leading a fulfilling and independent life are given a very high priority too. Students need the detailed, individualised support that they receive from every staff member. The work you do is vitally important. The outstanding staff who work at Willoughby describe their careers as a vocation, not a job. You don’t enter teaching, especially Special Education for financial gain. You do so because you want to make a difference to people’s lives. A career in Special Education undeniably helps you achieve this.

PRIVATE TUTORING

FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN (4-11) “White Tutoring” is a service created by a qualified and experienced primary school teacher of over fourteen years, Emily White. Her aim is to promote children’s love for learning and ensure they reach their full potential. ‘Over recent years, I and most of my fellow colleagues were increasingly unable to devote sufficient time and energy to pupils on an individual basis, due to larger class sizes. A tutor can identify pupils’ areas that need improvement, so boosting confidence and improving academic results. Competition to get in to the best schools has increased over the years, so it is no surprise that the private tuition industry is growing rapidly’. Emily has taken on additional roles within schools, including Special Educational Needs, English as an Additional Language, and Maths. All sessions are tailored to

take into account individual needs and personality, whilst remaining fun and engaging. She can also offer effective tuition to support children with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. Why not contact Emily to discuss your child’s requirements and to book your first session?

| Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Child Sexual Exploitation After a recent investigation in Bourne with which I was directly involved, I thought it a good opportunity to talk about Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE). CSE affects children and young people of all backgrounds and from all communities. It occurs when someone uses the power they have over young people to sexually abuse them. Their power may result from a difference in age, gender, intellect, strength, money or other resources. The offender can be very manipulative and will target the child to exploit a vulnerability which can be something the child wants or needs, such as accommodation, gifts, cigarettes, alcohol, or even attention. They may single out their victims and target them face-to-face, or approach them online. Some children are groomed by the offender who then forces the child or young person into having sex with the offender or associates. Because they are groomed over time, the child may not be aware that they are a victim, and even if they are, they may think that it is their fault. The one thing I want to stress is that the child is never ever at fault. Look out for: • unexplained gifts

• staying out late • being secretive about where they are going • lack of interest in activities and hobbies • missing school The most important thing you can do is to be vigilant around those who have access to your child, in both the physical and the online world, and to keep an open dialogue with your child, as this will help them to tell you if they are worried about anything that is happening to them. Demonstrate to children that it is all right to say “no”. We also need to help them to understand what is unacceptable behaviour, and that they should tell us or another trusted adult if someone is behaving in a way which worries them, even if they were unable to say “no” at the time. There are many sources of information on CSE on the internet. The NSPCC has a large section devoted to child abuse and can be found at http://www.nspcc. org.uk/preventing-abuse The thinkuknow website has the latest information by age group and for parents/carers and teachers. It can be found at http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Record Numbers in the Driving Training Industry Welcome to my motoring section. I trust you join me in enjoying these beautiful sunny days in Bourne, Deeping and surrounding areas. I would like to extend a big thank you to the readers who e-mailed me last month, regarding the issue of how close the nearest driving test centres are to us. Excuse the pun, but it is a “hot” topic that the DVSA will need to monitor closely. With these soaring temperatures, I see that we are also experiencing record numbers of vehicles on our roads and people learning to drive too. The sheer quantity of driving is eye- watering. Three hundred and sixteen billion miles of travelling on UK roads occurred last year, 78% of traffic is via car. Fifty years ago, 50% of men and 10% of women had driving licences; those figures are now 80% for men and 67% for women. In addition to this, the number of drivers aged seventy years and over is rising by ten thousand a month*. But for me, in my world of driving training, I do have to keep an eye on quality rather than quantity. A recent survey** indicates that one in three

young drivers who have passed their tests do not feel confident with real-life driving, and that is a concern. A glance at the fatality figures displayed on our Lincolnshire roads, at the time of writing, shows twelve last year between January and April, but up to twenty-two for the same period in 2016 – this tends to suggest that there is no room for complacency, and every effort must be made in continually improving road safety figures for BIG TOM customers who come to train with us. One last word connected to safety, I did mention this last summer too, but I think it is worthy of repeating – don’t take any chances with our four-legged friends being left in vehicles in these temperatures. Very rarely would any driver deliberately cause severe distress or death to a dog left in a hot vehicle, so the best answer by far is to not leave them unaccompanied at all – no matter how short a time you think you are going to be. Happy and safe driving. *Intelligent Instructor June 2016 **Driving Instructor June 2016

The Mobile Engine Carbon Clean Service

carbonclean

Restore performance | Restore power | Lower emissions | Restore fuel efficiency

Why is carbon such a problem?

• Over time carbon build-up affects performance, with reduced fuel consumption, increased and smoky emissions, increased noise and vibration (rumble) and less throttle response • As buildup increases issues develop such as sticking turbos, blocked EGRs and DPFs and eventually vehicles can go into a `limp mode’

Which vehicles suffer?

• All vehicles will suffer as mileage increases • Cars that are rarely, or never, driven hard can suffer too • Diesels tend to suffer more issues with their additional exhaust components

What does the carbon clean involve? • Between 45-60 minutes of your time overall

• Attaching to the air intake system of the vehicle and feeding in a mixture of hydrogen and an excess of oxygen gas with the vehicle running for between 30-45 minutes • Can be performed at your home or work with discounts for multi-vehicle bookings

the Outdoor Swimming Pool

The outdoor swimming pool on the edge of the Abbey Lawn which is now open for the summer season has been the place for a dip on a hot summer’s day for almost a century and is now one of the oldest and most attractive lidos in the country. The present amenity is the result of hard work by a dedicated band of volunteers over the years but has little in common with its early use as a carp pond to provide food for the monks of Bourne Abbey. During the years following the Great War of 191418, there was an upsurge in the provision of leisure amenities and a swimming pool for the town was high on the agenda with the old fish pond the most suitable place, having become a popular haunt for local lads taking a dip during the summer months. In 1922, a committee was formed to make it suitable for bathing, including the erection of dressing rooms and an entrance from Coggles Causeway. The official opening by Lady Kesteven was held on Saturday 12th August although the pool was primitive by today’s standards, unheated and with corrugated iron sides, and swimmers could often feel the eels wriggling between their toes as they walked on the muddy bottom. The pool was taken over by Bourne United Charities with the acquisition of the Abbey Lawn in 1931 and since then there has been a continual programme of improvement. The regular addition of new facilities now provides a pool that is just under the official 70

Olympic length of 50 metres and heated to a pleasant 27-30 degrees C during its opening period from mid-May to early September. There are indoor and outdoor changing rooms with lockers and toilets, lawns with seating and picnic tables, attractive gardens with hanging baskets, a refreshment area, sweet and snack shop and barbecues for hire. All of this in a most pleasant part of the town, surrounded by mature trees and a magnificent view of Bourne Abbey. Qualified lifeguards are on duty at all times while first aid and lifesaving equipment are kept continuously at the poolside. In 1990, after it had become part of South Kesteven District Council’s leisure activities programme, the pool survived the threat of closure but was saved by a vigorous public protest campaign which led to the formation of the Outdoor Pool Preservation Trust to secure its future and it is now regarded as one of the best places in Britain to swim outdoors.
