Welcome to the October edition of... Well, “Back to School” came and went, with the usual reports of schools tightening up on their uniform policies. Hearing of the Head of the Margate academy who sent home over fifty students for breaching their policy code recently reminded me of a newspaper headline once, which read, “Long-haired teenager suspended by Head for six days” – ouch!

This month’s issue combines the usual array of articles from our team of dedicated contributors. It gives us great pleasure to know that there are so many individuals who put in so much effort to ensure that their monthly contribution is not only relevant and topical, but also that it appears in such a way that you, our readers, will find it useful and, hopefully, entertaining. Caroline Mentzel is a fine case in point, as her piece for October has appeared in the form of a poem, with thirteen rhyming couplets reminding us of how we can improve our children’s behaviour – originality, or what?

What a brilliant performance from our Paralympians in Rio – all that gold … and fancy beating the USA in something! Sport continues to be at the forefront, as ever, and our “Pull-out centre page spread” this month focuses on Bourne Rugby Club, whose season has begun with victories over Horncastle and Thorney. Keep up the good work! The firms occupying Cherry Holt Square, off Spalding Road in Bourne, get our attention this month with a special feature. As ever, “variety” could be our middle-name. Within this month’s issue, there’s advice on looking after your neighbours, coping with strains and sprains, holiday tips for travelling with children, registering a death, selling your home, hare coursing, digital images, dealing with the menopause … and the list goes on! Don’t forget “Spring forward, Fall back”, as we lose the hour on Sunday October 30th. Finally, if you’ve not yet heard, the following one-liner by Masai Graham about organ donation has been named funniest joke of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival: “My dad suggested I register for a donor card - he’s a man after my own heart.” Enjoy the read!

How much time do you spend organising your child’s birthday party? We all want to provide a birthday to remember for our children, but who has the time to spend weeks planning the perfect party? Organising your child’s birthday party yourself is no easy task. First you will need to decide on a theme, and then source invites, decorations, and tableware. This alone can take hours of browsing. Bourne Carpets have been supplying high quality carpets and flooring since 1989. They pride themselves on the old-fashioned values of good, honest advice and friendly service at the right price. Owner, Andy Baldwin, insists, “I need to be able to walk through Bourne with my head up, knowing that I’ve given honest advice and my customers are happy with the service we’ve provided.” As the only carpet stockist in Bourne, Andy sees this as a clear advantage. He is able to negotiate good deals with his suppliers and this means he is unlikely to be beaten on price by any of the rival carpet firms in the area. A huge range of rolls and remnants is on hand at the Cherry Holt Square store, which means that an express service can be offered, once the customer has been advised thoroughly by Andy and his knowledgeable staff. Andy speaks proudly of how no one in his teams of carpet fitters has less than 15 years of experience, and business recently has been so brisk

Co-owners, Steve Hobbs and Rob Peacock, emphasise customer care, engineering expertise and a vast range of quality products. “If you buy quality, you only need to buy it once”, says Steve, as he leads me through an enormous list of the products, stocked within the building. With a stockholding in excess of £250,000, Resource can confidently claim, “If it’s on the list and you want it, we’ll have it!” Steve has been thirty years in the “engineering consumables distribution industry”, whilst Rob’s background has been more agricultural machinery-based, which complements Steve’s more industrial focus. The immaculately-bearded Simon Popeley adds a further twenty-two years’ experience in the welding and tool industry. The crucial contact with the general public, within the fabulously-stocked showroom, is in very capable hands, whilst the knowledgeable and hard-working clerical team ensure that this very successful business remains so. Steve explains how his customers benefit from Resource being part of Troy UK Ltd, the leading engineering distribution group within the U.K. Resource can buy from major suppliers and so compete effectively with their multi-national competitors. They, in turn, with their rigid systems,
cannot match the superior product knowledge, flexibility and commitment to customer service and after-sales care which independents, like Resource, are able to deliver. Therefore, you, the customers are in a “Win - Win” situation. Take your request into Resource, pick the brains of the storemen, decide on your solution and walk away with the product … at a truly competitive price. The list of available items in stock, and prestigious firms represented on the shelves, is truly staggering. Suffice to mention Milwaukee, Makita and Bosch power tools, LED Lenser torches and Gedore tools, to give just a brief taster. Resource are keen to attract as wide a crosssection of the general public as possible – they’re not just the “go to centre” for engineering companies. Several times a year, for example, their special “Trade Days” on site are an opportunity for the public to visit, browse and try out new products. Similarly, at the annual LAMMA Show, the UK’s leading farm machinery, equipment and services “shop window”, you can expect to find Resource (East of England Showground, Peterborough – January 18th and 19th, 2017). Visit their Facebook page for promotions, new products and useful advice etc.

Lauren Willis’s L.D.C. Wows Bourne with a Wonderful “Urban Oz” Over two hundred people were recently treated to a fabulously entertaining dance evening at Bourne’s Corn Exchange. An adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s novel, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, this sell-out show brought to a climax six months of rehearsals for Lauren Willis’s popular dance group, “L.D.C.” The cast comprised dancers from four years to fifteen, and became L.D.C.’s long-awaited debut stage show. The amazingly talented Miss Willis describes what went down… “Urban Oz” is an upbeat family show, in which the story is told through hiphop dance. Each character in the show specialized in different hiphop dance styles, to include locking, popping, tutting, Old-school hiphop, commerical and also waacking.”
She continues, “I have dreamt of putting on my very own show for such a long time and with lots of help and support, I was able to do this. It really couldn’t have gone better; I certainly couldn’t have done it without the support of the community of Bourne. I am truly grateful, especially to my parents who are so supportive and have always pushed me to follow my dreams. Words cannot describe how proud I am of all the “Urban Oz” cast. My dancers have worked so hard and I couldn’t have asked for any more from them. I have loved sharing this amazing experience with my LDC family!” “Discovering Bourne” roving reviewer, Claire Saberton, and Bourne’s Mayor, Colin Pattison, were both overwhelmed by the quality and potential star quality of what they were fortunate enough to have witnessed.

Speed-check System for Bourne – An Open Letter from Bourne’s Former Mayor I refer to the ‘Motoring’ article in the August issue of “Discovering Bourne”, and its reference to a speed check system for traffic in Bourne.
a procedure to be followed in conjunction with The Lincolnshire County Highways Authority.
The article claims that concerns about speed check signs have “fallen on deaf ears” as far as the Council is concerned. There is an implication that I, as the last Mayor, at best, misled and, at worst, lied to the good people of Bourne about the provision of such machines. I made no reference to the warning signs being imminent. I merely reported the fact that Bourne Town Council had voted to purchase a machine which gives warning of a motorist’s speed, as a contribution to road safety in the town. We were aware that their provision would not be instantaneous, as there is quite
The Council is then criticised for “dragging its feet on the subject of road safety”. In actual fact, the Council has been progressing with this safety initiative. There is a process which it is necessary to complete before the devices can be operated. Not only have the machines to be commissioned, ordered and purchased, but the Council must obtain a licence to operate and agree with the Highways Authority the fixing points where it may be used. The Town Clerk has been taking the matter forward as expeditiously as possible and we are very optimistic that the signs will be in use by November.
criticism, but it would be appropriate if anyone wishing to make any comments would check the facts before going into print in a trusted magazine that is delivered to all the town’s households. I am absolutely certain that everyone, including the Town Council, is very concerned about road safety in Bourne, and it would not be unreasonable to expect anyone in future to contact the Town Clerk or, better still, attend any of the Council’s meetings which are open to the public, and ask the appropriate questions, so that any opinions could be expressed from a position of knowledge. by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
Dealing with the Menopause The menopause is one of the few things that is guaranteed in a woman’s life. The question is … how will it affect you? Symptoms can be distressing and leave you feeling out of control of your body. Here are my top tips on how Renu can help you minimise the effects and get back “in the driving seat”. Exercise The benefits are accumulative and so any exercise must be regular to maximise those benefits. The addition of regular walks comes high on the list and can help you deal with “brain fog”. Higher intensity activity, such as one of our thirty minute gym/class workouts, would help improve your “mood thermostat.” Diarise your schedule to make sure you get the very best result. You deserve it. Diet Eating foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as oily fish have been shown to help with mood, especially in the case of depression and deficiencies in folate. Vitamin B12 and magnesium have also been linked to low mood, so try boosting your intake with wholegrains, pulses, eggs, dried apricots, green vegetables, nuts and seeds. This fits perfectly with the dietary advice we give in our ladies gym. Studies have also found a link between low levels of folic acid, a
Alcohol This triggers anxiety and depression, so keep it to a minimum. (Sorry!). There is also a direct link between sugar and hot flushes, and alcohol is just one high sugar choice to avoid.
Herbal Help The herbal supplement St John’s Wort, traditionally used to treat low mood and anxiety, now has good clinical evidence and an official NICE backing as a treatment for mild to moderate depression. Other people find Rhodiola or 5-Htp also helps, or try a life-stage specific supplement like MenoSerene.
Practise mindfulness So many of us have got hooked into ‘busy lifestyle syndrome’, thinking that a busy life is a successful one, but then we feeling guilty for not being able to keep up. But having too much on can create ‘churn’: the relentless washing-machine spin of thoughts, mental checklists and fears, which can impact on moods. Be realistic about just how much you can achieve in one day.
Be kind to yourself Women can be very self-critical, but boosting their self-compassion (treating yourself with the same kindness you show your good friends) can have a knock-on effect on self-esteem and mood. Take time out to treat yourself, book your spa visits or time-out and don’t feel guilty about it. Some studies show watching cute films of furry animals helps!
B vitamin that helps regulate the nervous system, and incidences of depression.
Take Control of your Body – 30 minutes at a time at our ladies only gym “I was apprehensive at the start as I’ve never been one for the gym, but 6 weeks in, the results speak for themselves. I’m really enjoying it, the staff and support is second to none.” Call now to book a free trial 01778 423923

Sprains and Strains – Remember … RICE is nice! Sprains and strains to muscles and joints happen to all of us and, for most, they are a painful, but temporary, reminder to be a little more careful. Prompt action can help your body to heal faster and may prevent further injury or prolonged pain. Strained or ‘pulled’ muscles often happen when we over-exert untrained muscles, train without properly warming up or try to go beyond a joint’s natural flexibility. Sometimes we feel the pain straight away; however, some injuries might not cause pain until later on. What can you do? Remember RICE (Relative rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation), and using these can help to relieve the pain and start the healing process. Relative Rest: The first thing to do if you feel pain is to reduce the offending activity – pain is usually your body’s way of telling you that there is something wrong that needs your attention. It can be normal to feel a little sore after exercises for a day or two, but if it is more than this, pushing through the pain is rarely beneficial.
pain, as gentle exercise, such as walking, can help. You should slowly build your activity levels up as soon as your symptoms begin to resolve and as soon as you are able.
joint and reduce swelling, though remove this immediately if there are signs that this is reducing the circulation to the area (numbness, pins and needles, the skin turning white or blue etc.)
Ice: Cooling the area using an ice pack can help to reduce swelling and pain. Wrap a thin tea towel around the area so as to avoid direct skin contact and then apply the pack to the injured area for ten to fifteen minutes. You should repeat this several times per day for the first seventy-two hours. This will help to control inflammation, making it easier for your body to get blood and nutrients to the area and resolve the injured tissue.
Elevation: If the injury is in the lower limb (knee or ankle), elevating the area a little can make it easier for your body to drain fluids that might accumulate around the area, causing swelling. For example, if you’ve hurt your knee, sitting down with the knee raised on a low foot stool may ease the pain.
Compression: Gently applying a compression dressing may help to temporarily support the injured
However, movement stimulates the healing process, so stay as mobile as you can. Try to keep the joint moving through a comfortable range of motion, without forcing it to the point of pain. This will help to encourage blood flow and keep your joint flexible whilst it heals. This is particularly relevant for back
If the pain or swelling fails to improve within a week, a visit to an osteopath may be beneficial. They will be able to assess the injury, advise you on the correct treatment and can provide some manual therapy which may help it get better faster.

O
n October 16th, Bourne hair salon, Maxey Hair on Wherry’s Lane, will be celebrating its first full year of being open for business, and would like to thank all of their loyal customers for their support throughout this time. Owned and managed by local woman, Sandra Upton, the salon is a bright, clean and welcoming place to visit, with full disabled facilities, perfect for wheelchair users. In this first year, Kelly has joined the team, and many of her customers have followed her from salons in which she has worked, in Peterborough, Stamford and Uppingham. Susie from Prestige Lengths is also part of the team and offers high quality keratin-bonded and micro-ring hair extensions. A fourth member of the hairdressing team, Vonnie, will soon be at the salon to make it

even more vibrant and popular. At Maxey Hair, you can get a cut, colour, perm or restyle, as well as “wedding” and “prom hair”. Susie is available for her consultations on hair extensions on a Friday by appointment. The salon always likes to keep up-to-date with new products, such as the new L’Oreal Smart Bond protective and strengthening range. Opening hours are 9am – 4pm, Tuesday to Friday, and 9am – 2 pm on a Saturday. Walk-ins are available, but it is advisable to book your appointment, and there is always tea, coffee and refreshments available. Maxey Hair hopes to go from strength to strength in the future and this anniversary is just the first of many.

The Beardwood Practice, Clinical Hypotherapy by Christine Beardwood
Hypnosis for Childbirth, Mothers & Children P
regnancy is a unique experience and hypnosis is a non-invasive therapy, suitable for most pregnancies, from morning sickness, fear of new experiences and comfort during pregnancy to pain management during childbirth and postnatal depression. The mind can be trained to experience discomfort as only pressure, and the more relaxed the mother is, the more comfort she will have. “Childbirth can be a positive event, with positive expectations” The sessions will teach you how to enter into self-hypnosis to create your own natural anaesthesia wherever you need it. You will have control over your body, and be able to be an active participant in your birth process. Benefits of hypnosis: • Less or no use of drugs means less risk of side effects • Awake, energized mother • Calm, peaceful birthing environment • Fewer interventions and complications during labour
• Building resilience and improving sleep • Finding a fulfilling and meaningful way of living • Pregnancy and Childbirth Hypnosis • Stress/anxiety management • Helping postnatal depression, trauma, anxiety and fear • Post-pregnancy weight loss
Hypnotherapy for Children and Teens
Children are excellent hypnotic clients because of their great imaginations, and this helps to achieve rapid results. It is a lot easier to change the perception of a negative memory for a child than it can be for an adult who has lived with it for a great many years. Hypnotherapy helps children with: • Blushing • Exam stress • Nail biting • Bed wetting
• Babies who sleep/feed better
• Confidence
Working mothers deserve less stress!
• Fear of the dark
Are you constantly juggling the conflicting demands of family and job? Working mothers can reduce stress and build resilience with hypnosis. As you relax into a deep trance, you will not only be refreshing and rejuvenating your energies, you will also benefit from powerful hypnotic suggestions which work at an unconscious level to give you an empowering new perspective on the different areas of your life. Hypnotherapy helps mums with: • Creating balance in their life
• Nightmares
• Dealing with parental divorce • Anger management • Overcoming shyness • Thinking more positively • Feel more in control of thoughts and feelings • Cope better with stress and anxiety • Learn how to be more relaxed and confident to improve self-esteem Hypnotherapy is suitable for children from six years upwards and I find that hypnotherapy sessions for children usually last for thirty to forty-five minutes, but this does depend on the child’s threshold limits!
If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@ beardwoodhypnotherapy.co.uk

advice from Caroline Mentzel, Behaviour Management Consultant
Changing Behaviour for Good …for Good! If your child will not behave Don’t “explete”, or rant, or rave. No naughty step, no smack, no shout, For this will only wear you out. My tips will help you make it better But you must follow them to the letter. Frequently and every day, Do the same in every way. Don’t give in or change your mind As this will only undermine, And any good you might have done Will slip straight back down to square one. Don’t blame the child that misbehaves, It learned by observing your own ways. Choose carefully, thought word and deed And that’s the ‘you’ your child will heed. Show care, be positive, and respect, And this your child will soon reflect. More like you they’ll want to be ‘Cos this feels good and warm and free. And you will benefit massively From creating family harmony. The future’s in your hands and heart Now’s the time to make a start. So if you’re on that slippery slope Contact me, I’ll HELP U COPE!

havetheygot.com - An opportunity for local firms to become "pioneers"! HaveTheyGot.com is an innovative new company, based right here in Bourne, aimed at “levelling the playing field” between small businesses and large chain stores, and taking practical steps towards keeping business local. Shopping trends have changed dramatically over the last few years, as customers expect to find goods and services online by simply searching for an item in a web browser. Smaller businesses seldom have the resources to get their products online and, therefore, don’t even appear on web searches, leaving potential customers unaware that the items they need could have been found locally. Research has shown that many customers would prefer to buy locally, as it offers a number of real benefits: • It avoids the inconvenience, and cost of having to wait in for delivery … not to mention the hassle of returning stuff that didn’t quite match up to the pictures on the internet! • You can have your items on the same day. • You get to see, touch or try on the items. • Retailers’ advice and in-depth knowledge of their products offers real advantages. To combine the benefits of online browsing with local shopping, we have developed an innovative new solution for small businesses to get their stock online, giving their customers the ability to find items locally, rather than ordering online or driving several miles to a large chain store.
This exciting new service is being trialled in Bourne over the next few months, and we would like to invite local businesses to join the ‘pioneers’ and see for yourselves the benefits it offers, both you and your customers. We will be holding a number of open events, where we can demonstrate the systems to you, and answer any questions. Details of these events will follow shortly, but for more information in the meantime, please feel free to contact me.
Chris Caffyn - Operations Director T: 01778 218010 E: chris.caffyn@havetheygot.com
With our systems in place, online shoppers searching for specific products or services will see local companies in their browser, along with the bigger players. Businesses can choose to show an easily updatable, partial inventory or a full, automatically updated list of all stock, including quantities available. To achieve this, our systems are able to link directly into any system including EPOS equipment, databases or even spreadsheets. If none of these are available, we can provide an easy-to-use, fully-featured, stock management application.

There is a huge range of symptoms, meaning that the condition is often wrongly diagnosed.
| Spotlight on... FENLAND AND DISTRICT
Coeliac Group Coeliac Disease, which affects about 1% of the population, is a condition in which eating gluten causes the sufferer’s immune system to attack the lining of the stomach, so that their bodies can no longer absorb enough iron, calcium, and other nutrients essential to stay healthy. There is a huge range of symptoms, ranging from tiredness and headaches, internal bloating and cramps, dermatitis and hair loss, to chronic diarrhoea and vomiting, meaning that the condition is often wrongly diagnosed.
The jewel in the group's crown has to be the annual Food Fair at Peterborough Regional College. The Fair, organised single-handedly by Kristina Buffham, gives national and local food producers the opportunity to promote their product to anyone, coeliac or not, with an interest in gluten-free foods. Kristina hopes that the next Food Fair, on October 15th, will for the first time host a gluten-free brewery – yes, beers and ales contain gluten, too! For more information about Coeliac Disease, visit coeliac.org.uk. To contact John about events, or to volunteer your help, email fenland@coeliac.org.uk. The only treatment is to avoid eating even the smallest traces of gluten. Continuing to eat gluten can result in a range of serious health complications, including infertility, osteoporosis, increased risk of cancer and, in children, stunted growth and delayed development. Gluten is found mostly in wheat, barley and rye, and is therefore present in many foodstuffs, from baking powder to soy sauce, and from pasta to pizzas. Living with Coeliac Disease therefore requires constant vigilance when shopping, and even more so when eating out.
Fortunately, the national charity Coeliac UK provides sufferers with a wealth of support, with a local branch based in Whittlesey, near Peterborough. The Fenland and District Coeliac Group, headed by John Buffham, helps over five hundred people across the region by organising social events such as coffee mornings, meals and outings, as well as keeping members informed through a regular newsletter, a Facebook group, and a list of coeliac-friendly eating places.
G
With almost every supermarket boasting a “free from” section, gluten-free diets have become popular in recent years. For one group of people, however, avoiding gluten is not a life-style choice, but a survival skill.

W
ell, I had a bumper crop of beans last month, but a lot of my fennel bolted: so did Monty Don’s … so that made me feel better!
Remember that the clocks go back at the end of this month, so make as much use as possible of daylight hours before winter sets in. This month sees jobs that are mainly clearing the plot ready for the winter months; plenty of digging and manuring. Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans and brassicas so that they decompose more quickly. If you haven’t already cut down asparagus foliage, do it this month as well as cutting back Jerusalem artichokes, and compost the lot. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it. If you have pumpkins or squashes, cut and leave them to dry in the sun, which will harden the skins and improve their shelf-life. Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now; although carrots can be left in the ground, it is probably advisable to lift them. Potatoes should be stored in paper or jute sacks in a dark, dry,

frost-free environment. Carrots can be stored by spreading a layer of sand in a box and laying them on the sand; avoid them touching, and then cover them completely with another layer of sand, repeat until the box is full and then cover. Freezing is also an option, and some carrot varieties will state that they are suitable for freezing on the packet. When freezing whole carrots, blanch for five minutes and then make sure they are dried out before bagging them – they should last for several months. You can also successfully keep root vegetables, except potatoes, in the ground by covering the roots with a layer of straw to protect the plants from frost. Crops that can be sown this month are:• Early broad beans • Spring cabbage • Garlic • Rhubarb crowns • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring Other jobs for this month include:• Continue to earth up celery and leeks • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries • Dig over the potato patch to check for rogue potatoes – if they sprout next year, they may carry disease • Remove yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould

Bourne Rugby Union
Football Club
History
From humble beginnings almost thirty years ago, Bourne Rugby Club is continuing to build on its achievements and to maintain its place on the sporting map. The club was formed, following a meeting of interested people in The Nag’s Head, in April 1987. They began playing on land generously provided by a local farmer, (off West Road, and now cut through by the by-pass), and using an out-building in the Nag’s Head car park for a changing room. Within three years, funding was found to purchase sufficient land for pitches and, soon afterwards, the club secured the purchase of a sectional timber building which was reerected to become the clubhouse. The club now had all it needed to “set up home” on Milking Nook Drove, off Spalding Road, to the east of the town. Thanks to the endeavour of those early members, and to the efforts of members throughout the years, including several long-standing stalwarts, the club is now a firm part of the local sporting scene. As the club developed, so too did the playing numbers and, within a relatively short period of time, BRUFC was fielding two senior sides on a
regular basis. Playing achievements ensued and these early successes brought local prominence. Further ground improvements followed, including additional storage and training floodlights and, with its well-appointed kitchen, bar and seating area, numerous social events can now be catered for, in addition to the post-match meals.

Adult/Senior Rugby
The club has a Senior 1st XV who play on Saturday afternoons and train every Wednesday at the club’s Milking Nook base, (6.45pm – 8.45pm.) Currently in the “East Midlands East South 4 League”, BRUFC are looking to increase playing numbers in order to compete for promotion during the 2016/17 season. This would further strengthen a team which has been starting to see the fruits of the development programme of recent years. Many former Mini and Junior Rugby members have now been pulling on the adult shirt, re-affirming the club’s commitment to bring on as many youngsters as possible, at “grassroots level”.
There is also a regular “Development” team, who train at the same time, and have a extensive Saturday afternoon fixture list. This team comprises younger players who are still learning the finer points of the game, and a sprinkling of “older hands” who use their knowledge and experience to assist in the youngsters’ development. The club open their arms to any players, whatever their age, wishing to return to the game, who may be seeking the bonhomie and challenges which “social rugby” tend to throw up. (The subtle reference here to post-match, liquid-related, activities is perhaps not entirely coincidental – Ed.)
Mini and Junior Rugby
The club has always looked towards the youngsters in the community and, some years ago, a Mini and Junior section was formed. This too proved very successful, recently being enhanced by the addition of a Youth section and now a number of those early Junior players regularly represent the senior teams at weekends. All BRUFC teams have RFU-qualified coaches and, as well as coaching at the rugby club, links have been formed with local schools, with coaching being undertaken on their behalf as an extracurricular activity. Mini and Junior rugby involve essentially two different versions of the game - “tag rugby” and contact rugby – for boys and girls aged from six to sixteen years (girls can play in the Mini and Junior sections up to Under 13 level). School Years 1 to 3 play tag rugby, which is a non-contact version of the game, aimed at developing a basic understanding of the rules,
40
D I S C O V E R I N G
learning ball-handling skills and building fitness and teamwork. Thereafter, children are gradually introduced to the contact elements of the game, over a two to three year period. On Sunday mornings, enthusiastically encouraged by their parents, the children learn to play and appreciate the ethos of the game, under the auspices of qualified coaches, in a safe and friendly environment. Junior rugby starts in School Year 8, and provides a pathway, via Youth and Colts rugby, to the adult game. The coaches adhere closely to a well-structured development plan, which provides the players with the knowledge and skills to make possible this step. The Minis and Juniors either play games against other clubs, or train, every Sunday morning (10.30 am – noon) at Milking Nook Drove. In addition, training sessions are held at the club every Thursday (6.30 pm – 8.00 pm) for the Junior and Youth sections.

The Future!
The club has ambitious plans for the future and has already commenced work with the local business community, who have been very generous in their sponsorship of the club. This season, their shirts sponsors are JJMac Ltd. (a multi-discipline Utilities and Civil Engineering company, based in Bourne). Huge thanks here are due to all of the club’s sponsors, as their investment has already led to the provision of a refurbished and equipped first-aid room, as well as providing the coaches with club-branded, wet-weather clothing and access to development and qualification courses. Furthermore, new specialised rugby training equipment will also be provided for the adult and youth players and the club are working on a rugby proposition that will attract players, young and old alike, to the club in the coming seasons. The club is actively recruiting to strengthen playing membership and, while experience is preferred for First XV duty, the club has a player development policy that enables those with little or no experience to come along and develop at their own pace – a system that works superbly well in the Junior sections as well! As with all clubs, volunteers are the key and, with the Senior teams playing on a Saturday and the Mini, Junior and Youth teams playing on a Sunday morning, there is a vast number of people who ensure the ongoing success of the club. With RFU (the game’s governing body) qualified coaches at every age range, the club’s aim is to provide a safe environment for children to learn and enjoy the game of rugby. The club has comprehensive policies in place to protect the health and welfare of children and to uphold fair play and positive attitudes to sport.
How to Join
If you want your child to try out rugby, then the first two sessions are free - if your child then wants to continue playing, you simply join the club and your child is registered with the RFU. Practices and matches take place each Sunday morning during the September to May season and start at 10.30am, with new players welcome at any time during the season. Simply turn up on a Sunday practice - check out the website, “Fixtures” page for details. If you are an experienced player, or just want to try out rugby, please just come to the club at one of the Wednesday evening training sessions and you can join in straight away, with no initial cost.
Interested? Want to know more?
New players are always welcome, even if you have never played before. For more information, please contact Ted Thornburn on 07885 945245. The contact for the Minis and Juniors at BRUFC is John Forbes on 07745 196038. Visit the club website at www.pitchero.com/ clubs/bournerufc

Not forgetting the ladies …..
“RugbyFIT” started two years ago for ladies wanting an alternative fitness class to those typically offered by the local gyms. The classes are designed to improve fitness and core strength through rugby-based drills and games of non-contact rugby. The content of the classes is different every week, ensuring they remain fun and engaging for all those attending. Although non-contact, the ladies do like the opportunity to hit some
pads and have a go on the scrummaging machine at times! Besides being a fantastic way to get fit and shed a few pounds, RugbyFIT is a great way to meet new people. Few of those who attended the first session, back in 2014, knew each other, but by March 2016, a whole group had got together to host a very special rugby “Ladies Day” that raised more than £3,000 for cancer charities, in support of one of the team members. RugbyFIT is on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, at the Milking Nook headquarters, and runs throughout the year … whatever the weather! For more information, join the Facebook group RugbyFIT Bourne, or contact the coach, Mark Thomas at m@rkt.me.uk or phone 07708 352202.
Played Rugby? Want to play Rugby? Bourne RUFC WANTS YOU!!
Mini Rugby On Sunday mornings, Bourne Rugby Union Football Club provides a safe environment for children to learn and enjoy the game of rugby with qualified coaches in each age group. School Years 1-3 play tag rugby and, thereafter, children are gradually introduced to the contact elements of the game. Adult Rugby The club has a thriving Senior section, with a 1st XV playing league rugby and a Development side playing Merit League and Friendly matches. Both adult teams train on a Wednesday evening, starting at 6.45pm (sharp!) Fixtures are played on Saturday afternoons.
Junior and Youth Rugby Junior rugby starts in School Year 8 and provides a pathway, via Youth and Colts rugby to the adult game. Our qualified coaches run a structured development plan to provide players with the skills and knowledge to make this step. Junior and Youth training is held on a Thursday evening at 6.30pm sharp - 8pm. Matches are played on Sundays.
All sides have R.F.U. qualified coaches.

Hilary Bloomer
Retired Westfield Teacher, Chorister and Allotment Holder There must be hundreds of our readers who have been influenced in a wonderful way by this month’s “Hot Seat” incumbent, the “friendly, enthusiastic and jolly”* Mrs Bloomer, a key figure at Bourne Westfield School for twenty-one years. Four years into her retirement, Hilary is now to be seen, flitting from pub to pub, ostensibly gathering information for the “Events Diary and Gigs” section of this very publication! After training at Chelsea College of P.E, a lifetime in education involved spells in Surrey, Leek, Lancashire, South Staffordshire and Kent. The breadth of her experience is impressive, from teaching P.E, English and Geography, through running a playgroup to becoming a county adviser and an Adult Education tutor. Forty-one years as wife to Steve, mother of Naomi and Adam, and now proud grandmother five times over, Hilary settled in Bourne twenty-five years ago. She still misses the Westfield children in a job which she absolutely loved. Hilary has sung with Stamford World Music Choir, “Woven Chords” since it started in 1995 and is now chair of the committee. She was a founder member of Bourne’s “SciFest” in 2000 and is still involved with its organisation. A keen netball fan, as both player and coach, Hilary almost made it to fifty before a knee injury closed that chapter of a very active life. Now, her allotment provides her with the opportunity to keep fit, digging and planting, whilst relishing her “contemplating time”, (planning which pub is next on her list to research for events and gigs, no doubt!)
“
(*… her words, but confirmed as accurate by us all - Ed.)
Q: Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? A: I was born in Edgbaston, (Birmingham), and lived in Smethwick (though I don’t always like to admit it!) for four years and then grew up in Stourbridge. I have lots of very fond memories, but playing outside in the fields at the end of the road, and only coming home when I was hungry, takes a lot of beating. Q: Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? A: There are two people really. One was my Chemistry, and later my form, teacher at Grammar School, Eric Horwell. He had so much patience; he taught me how to play chess; took me to County matches and chess congresses, and I ended up as West Midlands Junior Girls Champion. He also coached athletics and, again, gave up so much time – it fostered in me a love of sport.
44
D I S C O V E R I N G
Also, when I was in his form, I did very well in my exams, but that soon changed! The other person is my husband who, in the Upper Sixth, to some extent “tamed” me – I never did my homework on time, if at all, but loved being at school. I think I treated it as a social activity, where I could be with people. When it came to “A Levels”, I actually revised and I passed them all! Later, when I was training to teach, I became very focused and worked much harder. Q: Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? A: My great-grandfather, who was from Abergavenny. He had seventeen sisters and three brothers, and then eleven children of his own. They were timber merchants, owning horses and barges to transport the timber. As I have no contact with, or much knowledge of, my many relatives, I would be fascinated to find out my family history and also about his childhood. In contrast, I would need someone who would be easy to chat to, not full of their own importance, and to be good fun. As I come from a cricketing family, I think I would enjoy dining with Phil Tufnell. Q: How would you describe yourself in only five words? A: Friendly, tenacious, loyal, enthusiastic, jolly, Q: If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why? A: It would be the infrastructure in Bourne, especially more shops, to support the growing population and encourage people into the town centre. Q: What advice would you give to a “sixteenyear-old you”? A: If I had given a “sixteen year old me” advice, I just wouldn’t have listened!

Brexit Decision Shocks UK Markets
Since the summer, investment sentiment has been reacting to the referendum on the UK’s future membership of the European Union (EU). Market performance was volatile in the run up to the vote and investors appeared to believe that voters would opt to remain in the EU. However, surprisingly we voted by 52% to 48% to leave the EU. The news provided a shock for investors. The FTSE 100 Index plunged by almost 9% following the news, Sterling fell to a three decade low against the US dollar, and gilt yields dropped sharply. The result was economic and political uncertainty, not only in the UK, but also further afield, as investors around the world digested the possible implications. Weakness in the pound increased the appeal of companies with a high proportion of overseas earnings, providing a boost for the FTSE 100 Index. However, medium sized companies fared poorly in comparison, as that size of company tends to trade more within their own borders. The FTSE Small Cap Index declined a little less as they are perceived to be better able to react quickly to economic changes. In particular, the news raised questions about the future of the EU itself. Closer to home, the
decision resulted in the resignation of the Prime Minister and a vote of no confidence in the Leader of the Opposition. It remains unclear when Article 50 will be invoked, which lays out the process of withdrawal of an EU member state. The Bank of England remains “ready to provide more than £250 billion of additional funds through normal facilities”. And the promise of lower interest rates – then announced in August - provided a boost for share prices. Credit ratings agency, Fitch, warned that the result was credit negative for most UK industry sectors, citing a deterioration in medium term economic and investment prospects, and uncertainty over future trade agreements. Meanwhile, twelve UK banks, including Barclays, HSBC and Lloyds, had their ratings downgraded, alluding to “heightened uncertainty over the
UK’s future trade relationship with the EU”. Markets appear to have realised that nothing has actually changed as yet, and worries about whether international companies would choose to desert the UK seem to be unfounded at the moment. Meanwhile, the crisis in commercial property investments seems to be receding with the lifting of suspensions in property collective investment funds. As with all these short-term crises, the answer is to hold a welldiversified portfolio of investments. Whilst you may miss out on steep increases in individual markets, you will also miss the steep falls. As the aim should usually be for steady growth, it follows that anyone who significantly outperforms his peer group does so by taking extra risks which may or may not suit the individual.

Digital Image Sizes Explained You’ll need your ‘maths head’ on for this month’s article, as we’re going to look at digital images and the relationship between physical dimension (inches/cms), DPI (dots per inch) and Pixel size. Let’s use this holiday snap of Dubrovnik (Croatia) as an example.
DPI: Simply put, this is what it ‘says on the tin’; it is the number of dots that make up one inch of our image. So, 100 DPI will have 100 individual dots in one inch of physical size. Print Size:
If we look at the data attributes for this image, you will see there are three main elements to understand when we look at the SIZE and RESOLUTION of the image; Pixel Dimensions, Print Size and Resolution. When considering what each of these elements mean, it is best to relate to Pixel Dimensions when using the image in digital output format, such as on a computer screen. Then consider Print Size when you want to print out a ‘hard’ copy on a printer or when sending an image to someone who is going to print a copy. Pixel Dimensions: We use these mainly in deciding what size we want an image to appear on a digital screen (e.g. PC, phone, tablet). A pixel is a single ‘dot’, so the more pixels you have in an image, the greater the size of the image on screen. Screen sizes vary greatly these IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk
46
days, but a typical display is around 1920x1080 pixels. If we look at the Pixel Dimensions for the image, it shows 1000x750 pixels. As such, the full size on screen will be around half of the width of the screen (1000 of 1920) and 75% of the height of the screen (750 of 1080). How clear that image is on the screen will depend on the DPI, (the higher the DPI, the better the image looks on screen), although, that said, most PC screens do not benefit in quality for anything greater than 90 dpi.
D I S C O V E R I N G
This is important when we want to PRINT to paper, and ties in very closely with DPI and Pixel Dimensions. Looking at the information for our holiday snap, it shows that we have an image of 1000x750 pixels and a DPI of 100 (100 dots per inch). Using these two figures, we can decide what size our print will be, as it will be 1000 divided by 100 = 10 inches wide and 750 divided by 100 = 7.5 inches tall. Using this relationship, we can change the DPI to get a larger or smaller print. So, if you change the DPI of this image to 200dpi, then the image size will be 1000pixels divided by 200 dpi = 5 inches by 750pixels divided by 200dpi = 3.75 inches. This would result in a smaller print-out of the image, but one that looks sharper as the number of dots in 1 inch is higher (200 instead of 100). This may sound great but remember that, as you increase the DPI, the physical size of the printed image will shrink accordingly. Images downloaded from a camera will usually be larger than the figures quoted here, allowing you more flexibility in changing things for screen or paper. For example, the original image used in this article actually has Pixel Dimensions of 5184x3888 at 350 dpi. Using the relationship shown above, if I printed this off straight to paper the image would print at 5184/350 = 14.8 inches by 3888/350 =11.1 inches and with 350 dots to every inch on the print out. This would be a fairly high definition photograph larger than a sheet of A4.

Selling Your House by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell
– Try the Eight Week Challenge
So September has come and gone, the children are back to school and we can hope things might start to settle down again. The housing market has bucked the Brexit predictions and September has been a busy one for the housing market, as vendors and buyers look to get sold as quickly as possible before the market winds down for winter. As we enjoy a late summer heat wave, my advice would be to get on the bandwagon and get moving. We are still enjoying record low interest rates, 5% deposit deals for buyers are common place and many “new builds” are still offering the Government’s “Help to Buy Scheme”. So what’s stopping you?
bringing another to the market. We have run together many deals recently where a listing has generated a listing and all of them have sold within a few weeks of coming to market, securing purchases of their own and moving on.
Those looking to upsize or downsize may have noticed there is a reduction in the available housing stock in the local area. This doubleedged sword is often causing vendors to hold off coming to the market which compounds the issue further. Taking a chance and coming on will cause another “vendor in waiting” to see your home and want it,
D I S C O V E R I N G
Why not try our EIGHT week challenge? We have buyers registered that are really hoping to get a move done prior to Christmas. We’ll list your home on a Sole Agency Term of just EIGHT weeks and then, if it’s not sold or you haven’t secured a purchase and can’t find anything, off it comes! Rolling past this point, it’s the spring market when things really start to get moving again. So, if you have a want or a need to sell in a hurry, don’t delay and call us today!
Your local property experts!
48
Remember, it’s NO SALE, NO FEE. If you genuinely can’t make a move work, even with all our skill and expertise supporting you, then you take your home off the market. It’s that simple, no fuss, and no drama.

Holidays and Children – Yes, there is a Solution! You don’t want to stop travelling overseas just because you now have children and what’s more, you still want quality accommodation, great facilities and a little time for yourselves to relax. Great entertainment for your children and occasional supervision for them can be so important.
So here are some top tips on how to avoid having a stressful holiday with children.
1. Pace yourself. Go with the flow and don’t pack in too much. Build in rest days and be realistic about what you might see and do. 2. Travel is great for broadening the
mind, even if you’re a five year old. Start getting your little ones prepared for their holiday by treating it like a project. Read a guide book to them or watch a DVD or perhaps even try some of the local traditional dishes you may expect at your destination. Encourage them to keep a holiday journal, collect photos, ticket stubs and draw pictures of what they have seen, and record new words they may have learned along the way.
3. Research and prepare a “things to do and places to go if the weather isn’t great” list. This is particularly good if travelling out of season in the February or October half-terms.
5. Choose a hotel that caters for
children. “Kids Clubs” can give parents a welcome break but make sure you check what ages they take, what hours they operate and that they are running at the time of year you are visiting (many only run for the high season).
6. Taking a buggy or pram, even if your child is now walking, can be handy as they can double up as places to rest from the heat or, if up a little later than usual, to rest in a restaurant, for example. 7. Check the hand luggage restrictions before travelling, including the latest rules on carrying liquids, gels and creams, which will more than likely include milk and nappy cream, for example. Chances are you will be able to carry them, but they may have to be stored in a specific way and not
carried over a certain quantity, as the rules change so often it’s always worth checking, close to travel.
8. Requesting a ground floor room, if available, is often a good idea and checking the hot water temperature is another top tip to ensure it’s not too hot for little hands. 9. When flying, it’s helpful to have something such as a boiled sweet to suck on, or a drink, during take-off and landing. Make sure you have plenty of ways to entertain your little one such as crayons, books and their favourite toy. Let me help you arrange a stress-free family holiday. Call me today and see how I can help.
4. If possible, check in online as knowing that you are all sitting together on the flight will give you peace of mind and you can often turn up a little later at the airport, leaving less time to entertain your child before boarding.

Death
– Valuable Advice on What to do Next When someone dies, there are many things that have to be done, and at this very emotional time, many people feel they are unable to manage. There are some things that you – or someone close to you – will need to do. You must register the death with the registrar of births, marriages and deaths for the district where the death occurred. You need to do this within five days of the death, unless it has been referred to the coroner. You’ll need to take the medical certificate (signed by a doctor) and a birth and, (if applicable), a marriage certificate. You will be given a certificate to say that you can bury or cremate the person who has died, (called a ‘green form’ in England and Wales). You can purchase the death certificate, which is a certified copy of what is written in the death register, and this will be needed for the will and any claims on pensions, savings, etc. It may be best to pay for several copies, as any copies required at a later date will be more expensive.
bill into the branch of the deceased’s bank and, as long as there are sufficient funds, the bank should be able to arrange for it to be paid. If you are the executor of the will, you may need to apply for probate. This is the legal process of winding up the estate, calling in the assets, paying off debts and taxes and distributing assets, in accordance with the will.
Hopefully, you will know where the will is kept, or you will have a copy. You should check the will to see if anything has been included regarding the funeral arrangements. When you’re arranging a funeral, your main focus isn’t necessarily likely to be the cost. The funeral is one of the first expenses that is to be paid, so even if the finances of the estate haven’t been settled, you can take the funeral

| Consumer Advice Neighbours – Everybody Needs Good Neighbours! As the nights pull in – make sure your elderly neighbours aren’t left in the dark. Autumn is now here, and, along with its rich colours, crisp walks and atmospheric sunlight, also come darker nights, colder weather and, later this month, Hallowe’en, heralding “trick or treaters”. So, now is the ideal time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable. The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that some guttering or a roof are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash, and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return. Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non- existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even, so-called, medical companies suggesting the need for mobile aid from electric chairs to stair lifts. Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives: • Be careful what you say about yourself on social media.

• Set your privacy settings. • Keep your media profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn to a minimum (your name) and don’t post your address or date of birth. • Be very cautious about giving out personal information to people you don’t know – age, address, phone number etc. • In public places, make sure nobody can hear your conversations or look over your shoulder when banking, shopping or making other confidential online transactions.

Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local Neighbourhood Watch groups over the years – including those in Yaxley and Cardea - providing numerous lamp-post signs as well as giving free talks on the dangers of doorstep callers and other scams. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by crime, rogue traders and distraction burglars. If you live in, or know anyone in the PE Postcode area who would like to inquire about obtaining free Neighbourhood Watch lamp-post signs, please e-mail eileen@safelocaltrades. com or, for advice, visit http://www.safelocaltrades. com/consumers/advice/your-neighbourhoodneighbourhoodwatch Meanwhile, don’t be fooled by rogue or cowboy traders making an offer that seems too good to be true – as it most probably is.

Discovering. . . The Town Hall fire
by Rex Needle The most familiar building in Bourne is the Town Hall which has dominated the town centre since it was erected in 1821 but few people today realise that it once had a distinctive clock tower which was destroyed during a disastrous fire over eighty years ago. At that time, the weekly Saturday market was held in what is now the town centre and on 31st October 1933, as shoppers were dispersing and traders packing up to go home, thick black smoke suddenly started billowing from the top of the building. There were cries of alarm and someone shouted: “Call the fire brigade. The fire engine was then housed inside the left hand alcove of the Town Hall and the alarm bell hung outside with a rope attached which was soon being pulled vigorously. Firemen were in action within minutes and crowds gathered to watch but by this time the wooden clock tower was well alight. While trying to extinguish the blaze, one of the firemen, Charles Moisey, climbed on to the roof and into the tower with a branch hose to tackle the flames but was overcome by thick smoke and would have been suffocated had not colleagues pulled him out by his feet, the only method they could employ to rescue him. The fire was eventually extinguished although the clock tower was destroyed and an investigation later revealed that a gas lamp inside the cupola had overheated and caused the outbreak. The tower had been added to the main building in 1823, a gift to the town by Mrs 56
D I S C O V E R I N G
Eleanor Pochin, wife of George Pochin who was Lord of the Manor of Bourne Abbots for 37 years from 1761-98, although the original clock had been replaced in 1882 and seventeen years later, further improvement work was carried out. The timepiece had been in need of restoration for some time and it was fitted with a new dial of gilded hands and black figures in an opal glass, allowing the clock face to be illuminated after dark, a modern innovation at that time. The illumination was provided by gas light regulated by automatic machinery and the old wooden turret or cupola was lined with asbestos in an attempt to render it fireproof. Ironically, this was the cause of the fire because the gas lamp in the turret overheated and burst into flames. The tower was never replaced but the clock was refurbished and reinstalled on the pediment below where it can be seen today. Rare archive photograph from 1933.

Bourne Town Hall Plans Revealed A theatre, cinema, bar and market space are all part of the vision being put forward for the future use of Bourne Town Hall. The Bourne Town Hall Steering Group has revealed their concept for the building, which has been empty since 2014. The aim is to restore the building as a public amenity, to be used as a focal point for the Arts in Bourne, run for, and by, the people in the town. An initial concept has been drawn up by the steering group, which has been working with Lincolnshire County Council, who are trustee of the Bourne Town Hall charity. The plans show how the first floor courtroom would be converted into a performance space, capable of hosting shows and operating as a community cinema. The plans also include a hospitality and bar area at the front of the building. A new internal feature staircase would provide access directly to the first floor, together with a lift for disabled access. The ground floor would be returned to its original 1821 configuration of a large, open ‘shambles’, providing flexible space for holding events such as
DAYTIME
regular craft markets, or as a meeting place for a range of activities. In order for this plan to become a reality, it will be necessary to gain approval from the Charity Commission to amend the original purpose of the building, from the current use as a ‘Courtroom’ to the new purposes. If approved by the Charity commission, the plan will be to set up a new charitable trust to take over the ownership and running of the building. The next most significant challenge will be to raise the funds to complete the restoration and conversion; however, the team are optimistic that, with the potential to apply for grants to restore historic buildings, the scheme is viable. If successful, the team plan to re-use the original term, ‘Bourne Sessions House’, from when the Quarter or Petty Sessions of the courts were held there, almost two hundred years ago. Councillor David Brailsford, Chair of the Bourne Town Hall Trust Management Committee, said: “The steering group have made excellent progress in putting some proposals together that could bring this building back into regular use by the community. Now, it’s time for people in Bourne to have their say on these, more detailed ideas. The Town Hall really does have the potential to be at the heart of the community in Bourne once again, and to play a role in the town’s future.”
EVENING
The Open Days will be on Saturday, September 24th and Saturday October 1st, from 10am to 4pm. For more information, contact the Bourne Town Hall Steering Group at bournetownhall@gmail.com

Seasonal Canine Illness in Dogs
Over the last few years, we have seen an increase in the number of cases of what appears to be ‘Seasonal Canine Illness’ in dogs, during the months of August through to November. Although the cause is not yet known, we do know that these dogs have been walked in woodland. Last year in our Bourne practice, most cases had been to the woods at Sandringham. There are concerns that some of the cases may be associated with having walked in Bourne Woods, a few days before clinical signs were present - usually between twenty-four and seventy-two hours. Dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes can be affected by this mystery illness and, sadly, this can prove fatal in some dogs, especially those with compromised immune systems and the older or the very young dog. Clinical signs mainly include vomiting, diarrhoea, trembling, loss of appetite and lethargy; if you notice this in any dog especially one that has been walked in woodland then please do contact your veterinary practice immediately. There have been far fewer fatal cases of this in the last couple of years though, as people are hearing more about it and becoming more aware of the urgency to seek medical advice.
With the correct treatment which can sometimes involve a hospital stay, most dogs will recover well within a few days with intravenous fluid therapy and drugs to control the vomiting and diarrhoea. This sometimes takes about a week but sometimes a bit longer, depending on the individual dog. The Animal Health Trust in Newmarket has been conducting research into this illness for the last few years and we hope that, soon, they may be a step closer to finding out how we can prevent this. Until then, if you are walking your dogs in woodland, please keep a close eye on them and watch that they don’t pick anything up to consume. As we don’t know if this could be from a mite which may be picked up in these areas, it is a good idea to use a preventative topical preparation against mites, fleas and ticks. Please contact your vet to be prescribed the best product for this.
For any further information, please contact your veterinary practice to have a chat with a vet or a veterinary nurse.

Bourne SciFest SciFest is here again! Since 2000, this event has been held every two years, arranged by a small group of teachers and helpers. The aim is to promote an interest in various branches of science throughout the primary schools in Bourne and the surrounding villages. During the week commencing Monday October 3rd, a number of demonstrators will be visiting the schools, presenting different aspects of science. There will be a couple of old friends who have attended every SciFest since 2000. Mark Atkinson from Earthbound Misfits will examine the effect of gravity and other forces with the aid of some circus skills. He may even teach us how to juggle. Dave Shaw has entertained us in the past with his experiences in the rain forests of Ecuador. This time, he will talk about “Tribes, Teeth and Tarantulas”.
Football fans will be catered for by James Soper who will explain how to “Bend it Like Beckham”.
The fascinating world of space and astronomy will be revealed in a portable planetarium by Starlincs.
If this wasn’t enough, children will have the opportunity to bring their parents to two evening shows in Bourne Corn Exchange.
Younger children will have hands-on experience of a number of minibeasts, including Colin the corn snake and his friends. They will also be introduced to simple scientific principles through the medium of dance by Katie Green and Green Bean Dance.
On Tuesday October 4th, Science Boffins will present “Earth, Water, Air and Fire” and on Thursday October 6th, James Soper will produce bangs and flashes in his Ultimate Science show.
Another animal show – not for the faint-hearted – will include meerkats, a python and a crocodile. Mind your fingers! Matt Pritchard will produce some Science Magic and Science Boffins will explain that Science is Fun.
Both shows start at 7.15 p.m. and tickets will be £2.50 (See the Events page). Of course, an event like this is very expensive, particularly as the schools get all of their presentations free of charge. This year’s festival is going to cost in the region of £15,000 which sounds very expensive until you realise that over 4,500 children will be getting some experience of science. The committee are still some way short of their target so, if you feel that you would like to help to bring the wonder into young people’s lives with some sponsorship, they would be very pleased to hear from you. | Spotlight on Schools
Kirkstone House School and its Bespoke Education Kirkstone House is a unique, small, independent school which accepts pupils of all abilities and provides each with a bespoke educational experience. Celebrating excellent GCSE results this year, Mrs Corinne Jones, Headmistress, spoke about the ethos of the school. “We are an entirely inclusive school and our success lies in the fact that we enable all to achieve both their personal and academic potential. We never lose sight of the individual at the heart of all we do and our mission statement is that ‘The Individual Counts’. As a school, we understand that happy, well-motivated pupils who have excellent self-esteem, who care for themselves and for each other, are what make a school a success.” Our small classes mean that each pupil is known personally and thrives within a family atmosphere. Behaviour is outstanding and pupils are therefore able to make the most of all of the academic and extra- curricular opportunities on offer. We have a very wide curriculum, offering pupils a wide range of GCSEs and vocational BTEC subjects.
Current trends in education have seen the establishment of very large educational institutions, but for some pupils a smaller environment enables them to flourish best. GCSE years are key and recent years have seen many parents taking up our “two year package” for independent education for this crucial period. Pupils settle quickly and respond well to receiving lots of individual attention. Our Junior school also has small classes, and pupils are not restricted in terms of their age. A bright child might move up to study Maths and English with children of an older age whilst others may need one-to-one support to bring them on. Kirkstone is ultimately a happy school. Our children achieve very well, but we always have a sense of perspective and proportion, ensuring that they enjoy their childhood and grow up to value others and to have personal self esteem. Open day is on Thursday 6th October from 9-30am -12noon and 4-30pm -6-30pm.Prospective families should call 01778560350 or email Mr R. Words from the Mayor Councillor Colin Pattison
Wedding Fair - Sunday 16th October
Hello everyone. Hopefully, everybody has “summered” well. August was a relatively “quiet time” for my wife and I on the “civic duties and events” front, and allowed us to finally move home after fourteen years. There’s still much to do and many a cardboard box to unpack! During all the house-move-turmoil, we managed to open the Browning Court Summer Fete on August 27th. How can we forget that day? With what was basically a three hour thunderstorm, almost dark by 4:30pm and with the street lights on, the event had to be held inside. It was yet another wonderful little afternoon, put together by the dedicated staff and residents. Thank you for inviting us and I hope that the cake (which I successfully guessed the weight of) went down well! Later the same day, we were very kindly invited to the production of “URBAN OZ” by LDC at the Bourne Corn Exchange. A packed hall witnessed a truly wonderful and magnificent presentation of a classic film with a very modern twist. To say we were blown away by what we saw, does not even come close! A big “thank you and well done” to all those involved. Mention must go to Rob Immink and Andy Willis, not only for the warm welcome, but also for the fabulous sound and lighting on stage. All the cast, dancers and backstage crew were absolutely marvellous. Finally, to Lauren Willis. How on earth anyone has the thought and vision, and the ability to choreograph all of that together, at such a young age, is just spell-binding. Just a shame that, after six months of hard work, this production only gets one performance. We would like to wish Lauren all the best for the future. I think we will all be seeing and hearing a lot more of her. By the time you read this, Bourne will have learned how well it has done in this year’s “East Midlands in Bloom” awards. Fingers crossed, as so much hard work was carried out earlier in the summer. It would be marvellous to be awarded a “Gold”, as I believe the town centre in particular has never looked so colourful. Finally, we will be attending our Civic Dinner at the Corn Exchange on Friday October 21st - always a great occasion, another chance to invite other civic heads and dignitaries to our wonderful little town and, hopefully, raise some funds towards my charities! Take care, one and all.
10.30am - 3.00pm Join us for complimentary Cup Cakes and Champagne

| Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley
Sergeant Mosley’s Musings: - Hare Coursing “Operation Galileo” has been set up to tackle hare coursing and protect farmers from damage and criminality. I have heard many people ask, “Why do police treat this so seriously?” The fact of the matter is that it is an offence and there are often other offences associated with it, as well as threats and abuse towards those in the farming community. A “hare coursing event” is a competition in which dogs are, by the use of live hares, assessed as to their skill in hunting hares, and it often involves gambling. Offenders will travel great distances to take part and I myself dealt with four in the spring who were from Taunton.
There are several pieces of legislation which cover hunting and how we deal with offenders, but the main ones are: •
Hunting Act 2004 – which covers hunting wild animals with dogs and allows searching for and seizing ‘anything’ to do with hunting a wild animal or coursing, including vehicles and dogs.
• Game Act 1831 – which covers trespass in the pursuit of game. • Police Reform Act 2002 – which covers the seizing of vehicles used in an anti-social manner.
After several months’ respite for farmers, September is traditionally a time when hare coursers begin to become active once more, continuing until the end of March. During the busiest months of November and December, an average of fifteen calls a day were being received across Lincolnshire, with the majority in the south of the county. From September 1st 2015 to March 31st 2016, there were 176 men arrested or reported for summons. This was compared to 65 men in the 2014/15 season and represented a 170% increase in our enforcement activity. In addition, 19 vehicles were seized and 93 other men were dealt with by other disruption tactics and enforcement action such as “Direction to Leave” orders, traffic offences, etc. In a change in tactics, three dogs were also seized. This is a tactic which will continue this year.
This year marks a new tactic in which Lincolnshire Police have launched a new, free text service to pass information about hare coursers anonymously. If you have any information, please text ‘HARE’ followed by the details to 80800. To report a crime, call 101, or 999 if in progress. | Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram
Uncertain Times Ahead Welcome to the motoring section of the magazine. I hope you have had an enjoyable summer around Bourne and the Deepings. As the season begins to come to an end, as is always the case, everything else also continues to move on, and there is a fair amount of uncertainty around. The success of the recent school examination results is being met with talk of a £44,000 debt for university tuition fees by graduates. And whilst new £5 notes have just started to make an appearance, our interest rates refuse to make any positive gains. We might spare a thought for what the uncertainty surrounding the EU and the UK’s vote to exit, means for our motoring trade. How our leaving will affect the new car market and the subsequent effect on
the second-hand car market for instance is unclear. “I foresee all sorts of unforeseen problems”, remarked the astute Sir Humphrey in “Yes Minister” many moons ago. The outward appearance of many things on our roads is likely to change as a result of us leaving the EU: road traffic signs and roadwork traffic cones and even the appearance of our driving licences – these have all evolved over the years to comply with EU directives. Within my own circle of the driver- training industry, there is much hope that exiting the EU will bring opportunities for positive change. We will see. Wishing you all safe journeys on our roads.
