Welcome to the November edition of... “The first snow of winter has arrived in Britain with the Pennines glistening bright white this morning. Some forecasters have predicted winter 2016 will be the snowiest and coldest for years, with Accuweather, (an American media company that provides commercial weather forecasting services worldwide), claiming the UK is set for fifteen to eighteen storms between now and April 2017.” This was the first thing to greet me today as I logged in, to catch up on the news and weather, and this only half way through October! Whatever is thrown at us, though, we’re used to it by now, and with this month’s issue of your favourite freebie safely delivered to your door and now in your hands, you can turn your attention to matters, much more pressing than the weather. Talking of throwing things, my sister had a bottle of Omega 3 tablets thrown at her last week – luckily, the damage was super fish oil. Sorry, I think I’ll leave the one-liners to you-know-who! Have a magnificent “Mo-vember” and enjoy the build-up to Christmas.
Claire x
People used to just laugh when I suggested writing one-liners; well, they’re not laughing now! This month promises to be as momentous as almost every other month of 2016, thus far – think Bowie, Muhammad Ali, Brexit, Labour and UKIP in apparent meltdown, glorious Rio, the Clinton/Trump mutual appreciation society, and now … AFC Stamford on the road to Wembley,(with a First Round tie at Hartlepool the reward for having “killed the giants” of Wrexham!) Don’t forget, January 2016’s prediction in this very magazine, that Leicester City would be crowned Premiership Champions, so what price, the Daniels? Our regular contributors continue to provide a wonderful array of both useful and interesting information for you all, and this month we’re pleased to be able to flag up some extremely worthwhile, forthcoming events, along with the annual pantomime “What’s on.” Finally, seen in an Amsterdam delicatessen recently, and reminding me of the brilliant Annie Lennox : “Sweet dreams are made of cheese, Who am I to diss a brie?” Enjoy the read!

RYTS started in September 2015 following a very successful week-long Summer School, based on Willy Russell’s “Our Day Out”. Just over one year on and we’re looking better than ever! Since then, the school has performed “Annie, Jr”, “Guys and Dolls, Jr” and the full length musical of Lionel Bart’s “Oliver”. We performed “Annie, Jr” and some musical numbers from “We Will Rock You” in December 2016, in order to raise funds for the Thorpe Hall Hospice. In September 2016, we joined with A Handful of Harmonies, Ministry of Dance and Langtoft Junior Players to perform our “Show for Sue” at Stamford Corn Exchange, which raised £1300 for the Peterborough Thorpe Hall Hospice Appeal. At RYTS, we currently teach students, from the ages of seven to sixteen, the skills of the stage, namely drama, dance and singing. Classes are taught in small groups of fifteen to ensure that each individual receives the care and attention they deserve, to really help them stand out from the crowd. These are skills that do not vanish when the curtain falls – they are skills learned for life! Performance opportunities, locally and further afield, are offered at least twice a year at no extra cost, whilst additional awesome events – such as performing at the Lyceum, Her Majesty’s and the IndigO2 - are offered as an optional extra. Currently, we have five of our senior students working on the Trinity College, London, Bronze Arts Award. From January 2017, we will be offering a new class for four to seven year olds. These “Early-Stages” will meet for ninety minutes a week, and they will study fifteen minutes each of drama, dance and singing. Hurry … enrolments are being taken for this class NOW on 07545 979675 or 01778 345847. Alternatively, more details can be found on our website at www. rockyoutheatreschool.co.uk/earlystages. One of our new parents described us as being so different from any other group she has tried for her son, in that we really offer “the personal touch”, which is something we pride ourselves on. Parents, families and prospective students are welcome to visit at any time throughout the year by appointment with the School Principal, Andrew Clingo. So, what are you waiting for? Give us a call, and come and see what we can do for your child.
Words from School Principal, Andrew Clingo

Calling all young people, aged between seven and eighteen - The Rotary Club of Bourne can help you! Each year, Rotary Clubs organise a number of competitions for young people. In Bourne, we concentrate on four competitions; Young Musician, Young Artist and Young Writer (which are open to youngsters from ages five to eighteen, as at August 31st 2016), and Youth Speaks (open to young people in the age range eleven to eighteen on August 31st 2016). These competitions are open to those attending schools in Bourne and the surrounding villages and those residing in the same area. Prizes and trophies are available to be won, and winners can go forward to District and possibly National Finals. Youth Speaks is a public-speaking contest involving teams of three, a Chairman, Speaker and Proposer of Vote of Thanks, and will be held at The Methodist Church, Abbey Road, Bourne on Saturday November 19th. Teams may be from a school, a youth organisation or may just be friends. Young Musician has categories for solo voice and instrumentalists, ensembles (up to four players), choirs and bands. All genres of music are encouraged. In previous years, we have had winners at “District” level in all categories, including a rock band. Young Artist and Young Writer competitors can either enter through their school or as individuals. This year’s theme is ‘Reflections’, and can be interpreted in any manner; artists may use any media, whilst for the writers, either prose or verse is acceptable. The Rotary Club of Bourne is in contact with local schools and youth organisations, but is happy to take independent entries. Preparing for the Party Season It seems no sooner have we packed our beachwear away, than we are seeing if the zip will still do up on our little black dress for the party season ahead.
I was reading some research recently that showed women spend more time preparing for the annual Christmas party season than for any other event in the year – including a friend’s wedding, New Year’s Eve, birthday parties or even a hot date.
So, if you want to be a Christmas cracker this year, the secret is to plan ahead! There is always time to make a difference, but you need to plan it in your diary. Start with a regular exfoliation and moisturise when you are in the shower in the morning, to keep your skin glowing and make sure it’s ready for a last-minute spray tan if you need one.
I couldn’t help wondering if I have got something wrong over the years?
Keep a good quality cuticle oil by the bed and put it on your fingers and toes each night, to encourage healthy nourished nails that will look good naturally if necessary.
In my experience, Christmas is the season for a woman to be busy, but not necessarily with her own personal appearance. Christmas shopping, gift wrapping, food preparation, house decorating, school concerts and greeting card writing are all added to our “to do list”, along with additional socialising.
Get your hair and beauty treatments booked in around your social diary now. Salons get particularly busy in the leadup to Christmas, so if you are not
organised you may struggle to get a last-minute appointment. Start your day with hot water and fresh lemon and try to drink plenty of water to keep your skin clear, nails strong and manage your weight successfully. A sensible eating and exercise regime over a six week period has been proven to drop inches from your waistline and hips. Our “Little Black Dress Challenge” is the perfect way to get in shape with other like-minded women in the lead-up to Christmas. You are given weekly tips and encouragement, and a special thirty minute workout routine to fit in with your busy lifestyle. If you would like to know more about our little black dress challenge, please call us on 01778 423923.
The Little Black Dress Challenge starts November 2016 Six weeks of help, encouragement and weekly advice. “I lost seven pounds, and six inches from my waist and hips in the little black dress challenge. I couldn’t believe it!” Unlimited use of our gym and studio classes. Two personal training sessions. ALL FOR ONLY £54.99. Call Renu on 01778 423923 to book your place.

Wellhead Practice Excellence in head to toe Complementary Healthcare
Welcome to Matthew Phillips, Bourne’s New Podiatrist/Chiropodist
The Wellhead Practice is delighted to announce the arrival of a new podiatrist / chiropodist. Matthew Phillips joined the team in October, and will be working alongside Amy Leverton and Rachael Baker. Matthew has a First Class degree in Podiatry from Huddersfield University. Who is Matthew Phillips? Matthew was described as being “one of the most passionate students the University Podiatry Department has come across and someone who always tries to make the best of any situation”. Matthew is a keen professional who enjoys the personal side of podiatry; getting to know his patients, whilst continuing to learn about the subject. Away from podiatry, Matthew is a former semiprofessional footballer who has now turned his attention to the lesser known sport of “Ultimate”, (formerly known as Ultimate Frisbee). He loves the sense of community that the sport embodies and enjoys the high physical demand. Aside from this, he plays in a snooker league every week, and also enjoys spending time with his young nieces.
Why should I see a Podiatrist? Matthew is happy to see you for any lower limb treatment you may need. His practice covers nail care, including nail surgery, callus removal, corn treatment and fungal treatments such as athlete’s foot and fungal nail. Pains in your feet or lower legs, sports injuries and diabetic foot care are just some of the things with which he can help. Degree-qualified podiatrists are required to perform 1000 hours+ of supervised clinical work before they can be considered for qualification. They learn about routine care as a standard, but treatment always involves checking for other problems within the lower limb. Podiatrists are trained in vascular assessment, diabetic care and management, skin conditions, medication, life support and local anaesthetic injections. They work

in an audited, clean environment with instruments that are sterilised to full industry standards (sterilised in vacuum sealed bags at high temperatures), to provide the highest quality and safest environment for their patients. Remember, for any of your foot or leg needs, visit your podiatrist. “Podiatrist” and “Chiropodist” are the ONLY titles protected under British Law. The Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) regulates podiatrists and many health professionals. To check whether your podiatrist is genuine, please check the online register. http://www.hpc-uk.org/check/ or contact them. They are there to protect you, the public.

to move forward with their lives in a constructive way.”
The consultation focuses on explaining how the brain works, and how it can sometimes cause us to react to situations in a way that might not be best for us. So, if you find that you sometimes become stressed, withdrawn, feel a degree of anxiety and sleeplessness, or become angry, then you may wish to pay Christine a visit. She is based in Bourne and Stamford, in comfortable and warm surroundings.
The free initial consultation can sometimes provide a great catalyst for change in someone’s outlook on life, because they are given the tools to understand why they may react negatively in certain situations. Crucially, the explanation also provides the prospective client with a focus on what they can do to be able to help themselves to take steps towards a brighter future. Hypnotherapy is completely natural, safe and relaxing. You will remain conscious and in complete control throughout.
“It is common for us to work with people who may find they have difficulties in sleeping or handling stress”, explains Christine. “The free initial consultation provides a no-obligation opportunity for us to talk with a prospective client about how the brain works, and to answer any questions they may have. Annual Coffee Morning to Raise Funds for Leukaemia Research Dr. Michael and Mrs. Margaret McGregor will be holding their annual fund-raising event in Bourne Corn Exchange on Thursday November 24th, (10.00am – 1.00pm), in memory of their son, John, who died of the disease in 1985. The Spalding and Bourne Committee of the Leukaemia Research Fund disbanded after the national body changed its name to “Bloodwise”, (to encompass the 137 types of blood cancer which they hope to combat). Since 1985, the energetic, retired Bourne G.P. and his equally energetic wife have helped raise over £102,000, as a result of this wonderful

Everyone is welcome and, for a mere £1 admission fee, you can enjoy a coffee and a hot mince pie. There will also be the usual plethora of stalls, offering cakes, preserves, books, toys and games, jewellery and accessories, China, Christmas gifts, along with raffles and a tombola. “With the loyal support of our many helpers and the usual generosity of the people of Bourne and the villages, we hope to have another enjoyable and

“Woven Chords” is funded by South Kesteven District Council and sessions take place on Thursdays, 7.30pm to 9.30pm, at Stamford Arts Centre during school term times. Remuneration is paid through the Arts Centre and is at a very competitive rate.

As many of you will have seen recently, there are big plans and, hopefully, opportunities to develop the Town Hall into something “very special” for the whole community. When I attended a presentation at the Town Hall, it is fair to say I was blown away by the amount of work already put into this project by the Steering Committee, wonderfully led by Mr Charles Housego. The enthusiasm that Charles and his team display for this wonderful old building, to transform it from a “sleeping shell” into a vibrant and successful community asset, is so infectious, and I appeal to you all to please get behind this scheme, because I am certainly “on board”. This will be a community-led project, with a group of Trustees found from within our town. I strongly urge anyone with financial, business, procurement, human resources, architectural or strong organisational credentials (or just willing volunteers) to get in touch, to get this project moving forward. Mention should be made at this point of the considerable assistance being provided by Lincolnshire County Council. The civic and public invitations have certainly increased recently. My wife and I have travelled to Gainsborough, Market Rasen and, most recently, Whittlesey, to attend and support fellow Mayors’ Civic Services. They are always good occasions, getting to meet and make new friends. We also opened the “Friends of Butterfield” Autumn Fayre in late September. At least the weather stayed fair and the stalls were able to be arranged outside. Well done to those who tirelessly give their time up to support the Butterfield Centre! Many thanks to the Bourne Round Table and their fine young Chairman, Rob Mason, for inviting me along to their “Fiftieth Charter Night Dinner” at the Corn Exchange. Guest of honour and speaker was Manu Tuilagi, professional rugby union player for the Leicester Tigers and, of course, England. Thank you to Rob and the Round Table, but also to the big fella himself, and especially for his wise advice, “Never forget where you came from”. Also, a special mention to Kevin Brown, this year’s President of the Bourne and District Lions Club for their kind invitation to my wife and I to their “Forty-first Charter Night Dinner” and for making us so welcome. Obviously, both “The Tablers” and “The Lions” have contributed so much to the local community over the years with their numerous and annual fundraising events, and we should all be thankful for their tireless and unselfish efforts. Take care, one and all, and see you next month.

Dr. Brian Parkinson BA, PhD, CEng, MIET, FIED. Engineering Design Consultant, Dyke Resident, Liverpool F.C. Fan
Amongst the many, hard-working, residents of Dyke who recently organised the annual Scarecrow Festival was this month’s “Hot Seat” incumbent, Dr. Brian Parkinson. A proud Yorkshireman, Brian’s working life has been a colourful mixture of mechanical engineering and university lecturing, with extensive overseas travel along the way. Eight happy years in Liverpool created a lifelong affinity with Liverpool F.C, whilst his father’s structural engineering background spawned Brian’s love for, and subsequent lifetime within, the world of mechanical engineering. Leaving school at fifteen, a traditional apprenticeship was then followed, several years later, by a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Leicester University. He fondly remembers watching Liverpool play the Foxes at their old ground in Filbert Street. After a period in industry, he moved into the world of academia, lecturing in Huddersfield and at The Open University. This was followed by his appointment at Hatfield Polytechnic, a very highly respected technical institution, built on the foundations of de Havilland and later, Hawker Siddeley aircraft manufacturers. In 1992, the “Poly” became the University of Hertfordshire, and Brian continued his research into artificial intelligent design systems, producing over a hundred scientific and technical papers, which he presented around the world.
“
Q: Where were you born, and what are your favourite memories of your childhood? A: Mexborough in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Building Meccano with my father was perhaps where my career began. Also discussing Liverpool FC games with him, where we did not always see eye-to-eye! Q: Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? A: I loved and admired my grandmother, particularly for her stoic manner. As a coal miner’s daughter and wife, life in a Yorkshire mining village was not easy. It was dirty beyond belief, but there was a community spirit I wish we enjoyed today. Another influence has been Liverpool FC legend, Bill Shankly, for his gritty persistence and self-determination. Q: Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? A: I would invite the current Liverpool FC manager, Jurgen
Academia was changing, and not entirely to Brian’s liking. Administration, budgets and balance sheets became the main focus, and when income took precedence over education, it was time for him to move on and so, in 2003, he took early retirement. Next, he worked as a diplomat in Delhi, India, where, among other appointments, he became engineering consultant to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a truly memorable experience. More excitement was to follow, as Brian returned to the U.K. and headed for Dyke! Brian’s involvement with engineering continues as a member of the Accreditation Panel under the Council of Engineering Institutions and as a member of the Education and Training Committee of the Institute of Engineering Designers. His hobbies now include playing golf (poorly), learning to play the saxophone and walking. He has also built and maintains the web sites for both the Dyke Village Hall, (www.dykevillagehall.org.uk) which has just reached 13,000 hits last month, and the Dyke WI. (www.dykewi.org.uk) Klopp, and geneticist Sir Paul Nurse, past President of the Royal Society, who is quoted as saying, “I have an idealistic view of science as a liberalising and progressive force for humanity.” I dearly wish for many more people to study science and enjoy the comprehensive results. Q: How would you describe yourself in only five words? A: Ever hopeful, an optimistic Red. Q: If there was one thing which you could change about your village, Dyke, what would it be and why? A: How about a new, well-designed village hall, suited to the needs of the community and its people? Q: What advice would you give to a “sixteenyear-old you”? A: You are more likely to achieve success by consistently acting on good ideas, as against wishful thinking and dreams. “Talkers talk, doers do things that get talked about”.

Conquering Kilimanjaro By Rob Ca meron
In the first weeks of September, I led a group of thirty-six students up Africa’s highest mountain for the charity, “Hope for Children”. Until then, the closest I’d got to mountaineering was climbing Ben Nevis on my Gold, Duke of Edinburgh expedition, and that was only 1,346m - Kilimanjaro towers 5,895m above sea level! Here, I would be battling blistering heat, freezing nights and the prospect of altitude sickness. This would be no picnic. On arriving in Tanzania, we spent the first few days exploring the sprawling markets of Moshi (a town close to the mountain and the location of our hotel) and visiting the Amani Children’s Home, a project sponsored by our charity that helped house street children and give them an education. Communicating through the universal language of play, we were humbled by their positivity, enthusiasm and ambition. “When the going gets tough up on Kili,” said Amani’s Director, “think of what these children have overcome”. Humbling is an understatement. Heavy rain and monkeys greeted us as we made our way through the gates of Kilimanjaro National Park to start our trek. Each day was different: rainforest gave way to moorland which, in turn, developed into alpine desert, before finally becoming the sand, snow and glaciers that made up the top zone. Summit night, we had been warned by all those who had preceded us, would be the toughest part. They were not lying. We were woken at around 10pm, told to put all of our layers on and headed to the mess tent for the “Last Supper”. Compared to some in the group, I was underdressed, and that still meant thermal base layers top and bottom, walking
trousers, waterproof trousers, a t-shirt, a fleece, a waterproof jacket AND a thick ski jacket … and I was STILL cold! We walked in the pitch black for over eight hours, battling winds and temperatures that got to minus twenty, with only the lights from our head-torches to illuminate the person in front. Mental strength played more of a factor here than physical – you had to push through, to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I kept thinking of Dory from “Finding Nemo”: “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…” We reached the summit as the sun was rising above the horizon and, I am not ashamed to admit, a few “man tears” were shed, as I saw the silhouette of the sign. I’d done it. Cue … The Profile Picture! Of the thirty-six who had set out on the trek, all but two had made it to the top. We came down exhausted, dirty but elated. Kilimanjaro had been conquered. What’s next?

Dreaming of Some Winter Sun? How about Gran Canaria? I have seven ways to lose your heart to this magical island …
The thermometer won’t give you a fright on Gran Canaria There are no extremes of hot and cold, no being scorched by summer or bitten by winter on Gran Canaria. Thanks to a fortunate location and generous trade winds, there are annual average temperatures of twenty-four degrees. Seasons blend into one, with no sudden descent into an Arctic chill or acceleration towards a sultry Saharan summer.
Gran Canaria’s a natural beauty
Time stands still on this island which preserves its looks, with around half its surface protected from development. You can journey into the interior to discover its amazing volcanic origins.
Life’s a beach on Gran Canaria Of its one hundred and fifty miles of
coastline, there are thirty-five miles of beaches. You’ll find carpets of golden sand under your feet in the south. Hit the north for sometimes stony spots, to sun yourself and swim.
Gran Canaria’s an outdoor gym Favourable all-year-round weather enables a wealth of outdoor activities. Hikers can enjoy the network of trails which criss-crosses the island. Cyclists will be tested by the steep climbs, but rewarded with fabulous views. Meanwhile, the Atlantic is fantastic for those who want to surf its mega waves, discover the amazing marine life with a dive, or even fish for their supper.
Destinations don’t get more family-friendly
Say ‘Hola’ to an island that’s a place for the whole family to enjoy. Whether you’re “coupled-up” or travelling with children, you’ll find plenty of attractions, from water parks to zoos, to keep even the smallest ones entertained during their stay.
Savour the flavour of Gran Canaria
There’s something in the air in Gran Canaria, and its aroma is infectious, from the almonds and their beautiful blossoms to the most northerly coffee plantations in the world. Country folk pick tropical fruit as well as vines planted on fertile volcanic soil, not forgetting the purest

Town and country Gran Canaria style
Each of the island’s twenty-one municipalities has its own identity. From the cave community of Artenara, (the highest on the island), to Mógan and its “Little Venice” of a port, there’s a diversity of landscapes on Gran Canaria which you would struggle to find in islands twice its size. It’s a paradise … and only a short-haul flight away!

ovember is not the best of months to be spending time outside, as the days are getting shorter and the weather is on the decline. However, time spent in the vegetable plot now will pay off in the spring and make your job easier. Weeds never seem to stop growing but will slow down considerably over the winter months, so it is a good idea to clear them now so that they don’t get a head start in spring. Make sure that the plot is clear of summer crops; don’t leave them to rot, as this can increase the risk of disease and harbour unwanted pests. November is a good time to give the soil some attention; if you wait any longer the soil could be waterlogged or too cold. Once you have cleared the weeds and any old crops, fork the soil over and add compost or manure to help replace nutrients in the soil. I then cover the area with either weed suppressant or plastic, which will keep the weeds at bay and the soil warmer for planting in the spring. Another important task for November is pruning, as fruit trees and bushes have shed their leaves and are dormant for the winter; also remove any netting from fruit cages to allow the birds to eat insects and eggs.

FENTONS
• Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing into smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position. • Secure covers over compost heaps/bins, although the material needs to be damp; winter rain and snow will saturate it and slow the rotting process down. • Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners, one such example is http://gardenplanner.suttons.co.uk • Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot. • If you have a lot of leaves, make a wire cage to make leaf mould, or put them together with a bit of soil into a black plastic bag - make a few small holes. • Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips; wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness. • Plant garlic cloves, early “overwintering” broad beans,(either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions.

❱ Your Finances
by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd
Investing your money
- How? Why? Where? How Long? Working out your objectives and your expectations is key to determining your investment timeline. It will allow you to clarify how long you feel that you can commit the funds for, so it is also important to look at how different investments behave differently over time. If you want to invest for less than five years, then it’s probably worth ruling out the stock market, because if the stock market drops and you lost 15% of your investment, you have very little time to weather the storm and generate a good return for yourself. You also need to make sure that you have sufficient “rainy day” money, so we suggest that you have at least three month’s income in easily accessible accounts. Once you’ve worked out a realistic timeline for your investment, you can start to think about your return expectations, as well as assess
your attitude to risk. Often, your current circumstances guide these decisions. It might be that you’re at the peak of your career and you want to shoulder more risk in order to achieve higher returns, or maybe retirement is around the corner, so you may want to take less risk with your capital. You may be willing to accept potential losses to earn higher returns, or you may want your risks to be lower and accept that the rate of return will also be lower. There are many different assets, such as equities (company shares), bonds (company and government debt), property (for our purposes this is invariably commercial property rather than houses and flats) and cash. Within these assets, there are sub-sectors, such as equities, where there are UK or overseas markets, (if it’s overseas, is it USA, Europe or the emerging markets?) As you can see, this gets very complex very quickly.
Each asset class or individual holding has a different risk factor; in general, the riskier the asset, the greater the potential gain, but also the greater the chance of losing some or all of your investment. Can you have too little risk? We all think that the safest haven has to be a bank account - there’s very little risk of losing any money, but inflation is almost always higher than the interest on your bank account, so by ‘investing’ into deposit accounts which pay below inflation, less tax, this strategy is only likely to produce a loss, inflationadjusted. Whatever investment you choose, it’s important to think about your capacity for loss. Never invest money that you are dependent on and cannot afford to lose. Many of us think our risk tolerance is higher than it is. A good Independent Financial Adviser will use a number of methods to help assess your attitude, such as an “Investor Risk Profile”, which will help to ensure you are making the right choice. Professional financial planning advice is essential to ensure you’re in the right mix of assets, at the right time.

Alto Electrical
– (Yes, really, a lady electrician!) Ladies, have you ever felt threatened or uncomfortable when you’ve called out an electrician, a plumber or any other person to sort out a repair on your property, and a man appears on your doorstep who you have never met before? You’re alone and feel vulnerable, but the work needs to be done and often, with urgency. Guys, do you feel comfortable when you’re out of the house and a stranger is going to spend time there, and you know that your wife/ partner is reluctant to share your empty house with a workman, even for just an hour? A year ago, local lady, Coleen Clarke, realised that these happen to be very important considerations for many, and that became her inspiration to establish Alto Electrical, having already become a fully-qualified electrician. Now, with twelve months of experience behind her, Coleen talks enthusiastically about how much progress she has made in her chosen career. This is now one busy lady, finding success in a “man’s world”. Much of her work has resulted from recommendations from satisfied clients, and she hasn’t felt much of a need to venture far from her Witham-on-the-Hill base. Coleen is still studying, alongside her “day job”, working through H.N.C. and H.N.D. qualifications, towards a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. Her long-term goal is to be at the forefront, when the emphasis placed on renewable energy sources is inevitably going to be much greater in the future than it is at present. For the moment, though, Alto Electrical strive to provide a quality service at an affordable price, with a clear spotlight shining on energy conservation and using energy-efficient components at all times. The reassurance that they give that the workplace (“your precious home!”) will be left in as tidy a condition as possible, otherwise a free professional clean will ensue, appears to be another sound reason why Alto Electrical should be your first call, when the lights go out! Finally, Coleen would love to hear from any ladies who might be considering a career as an electrician and who could join her as an apprentice. “At Alto Electrical,” she explains, “we don’t just hire anybody, we ensure that only the most empathic, considerate, friendly, professionals work in our team. Our customers are very important to us and we want to make sure they are safe and comfortable in our hands. If you work well and look after our customers, we will look after you too!” So what are you waiting for?

ARE YOU SICK OF THE ARCHERS? Anyone who has been following the Radio 4 soap, “The Archers”, may by now have had enough of the emotional rollercoaster plotline, which has involved the domestic violence victim, Helen Titchener, and her trials and tribulations at the hands of her abusive husband, Rob.
CASH FOR CHRISTMAS!! Want to earn an extra £500+ before Christmas? If I could show you a way to make you and your family’s Christmas EXTRA SPECIAL this year by showing you how to earn and EXTRA £500+ would you like to know more ?
At last, Helen is out of jail following her Crown Court acquittal for attempted murder, and she has recently triumphed in the children proceedings, so reuniting her family. She is about to launch divorce proceedings against Rob, and we are all wondering whether she will find the courage to make a formal police complaint to have him prosecuted for rape. Let’s hope that the future legal processes will be somewhat more convincing than the frustrating (for real lawyers) misrepresentations in the court cases so far! However, there has been a serious point made as a result of this storyline, namely that “coercive control” of one partner over another within a relationship, is a genuine and widespread problem that only in recent times has come to public awareness. The emotional and psychological abuse of a partner through threats and restrictions can be more damaging than physical violence. It is very hard to prosecute such a pattern of behaviour, and recent statistics from the Crown Prosecution Service show that the new offence of controlling or coercive behavior, introduced in 2015, has only been used five times since it came into force.
Please contact Pam on: 07538 550126 or email: pamelawynneflp@hotmail.co.uk for more details
Such behaviour is likely to be easier to rely on in family proceedings in situations where a spouse/cohabitee requires the other party to leave the family home. Injunctions and Occupation Orders can be made by the Court for this purpose.

❱ The Technology Site
by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC you could cancel your contract entirely and rely on mobile technology for broadband and phone, hence removing your monthly line rental fees. I have at least one client contemplating this.
Gee Up Your Broadband
The modem/router provided with this service is a small white elongated cube which has in-built WiFi and a network port for connecting a small office or home network to it.
South Lincolnshire is hardly blessed with widespread, superfast broadband and those living and working rurally, and still suffering poor broadband speeds, will know how hard it is to get information and commitment from BT about the fibre upgrades. Many areas are still struggling along on old technology and without a short-term solution being offered via their telephone line. What many people do not realise though is that there may be a superfast broadband solution already available to them. EE have invested heavily in improving and strengthening their 4G mobile network around this area and elsewhere. Earlier this year, they launched their 4GEE Home package, offering high-speed broadband to EE customers via that upgraded mobile network.
• Look at the top of the phone to see whether a 3G or 4G connection is indicated.
Note that the speed will vary at various locations in the house/office so you should look for the best signal and this will be where to install your 4G router.
A side benefit, should you choose to do so, is that you no longer need a landline for broadband so
46
• Turn off your WiFi connection on the phone and wait a few minutes.
• Run the SpeedOfMe test at least three or four times to see what speed you can achieve via 4G.
The service is a little more expensive than a standard landline contract, but not excessively so. The costs for a twelve month contract are shown in the table, and start at £18 per month.
01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk
You’ll need someone who has an EE enabled device, such as a mobile phone.
• To test the speed, open an internet browser on your phone and go to the website http://speedof.me
Over recent weeks, I have been converting many of my clients from their landline broadband solution to the 4GEE Home service. Speeds for these clients with BT ranged from 1mbps to 6.5mbps and this has been replaced with a reliable 4G service that provides between 30 and 70mbps (this is dependent on your proximity to an aerial and the equipment being used for your home network).
IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses
How Do I Test for Availability of the Service?
If the tests go well and you want to switch, then you can place an order direct with EE, and your device normally ships within a couple of days. You do not have to cancel your existing broadband to do this, as the service does not require your land line to be re-assigned. If you do not have access to an EE device, then you can contact me at LITES PC if you wish. I can carry out an audit for you to determine the availability and the best position for the router. Likewise, if you wish to discuss this option, then please get in touch.

Winter’s Coming - Time for a Move?
To quote a famous TV show, “Winter is coming!” Although I have a beard, I am seldom seen, stood in furs, staring broodily at sunsets, pondering on the fates of Kingdoms. But this time of year, with the closing in of the evenings, often is a time for change and the collecting of thoughts. So, with more time indoors, is it time to start getting ready for a move? Nothing confirms the need to move more than the feeling of being cooped up on a winter’s evening. Also, you may be aware that having spent the summer in your garden, was it up to muster? These questions I can’t answer for you, although perhaps some moody middle distances staring on a windy hillside may be a good first step to helping you collect your thoughts!
listings are seeing great interest even now, and deals are still being done. Remember, it’s NO SALE, NO FEE, so for you the risk is zero. We do the leg work and make the initial outlay, so you can get on with life. We book the clients in to view, we’ll bring them up and show them round, we’ll get you a great price! It really could be that easy, but if you don’t ask you’ll never know. All valuations are free and without obligation, so what are you waiting for?
My advice would be to call in and book a valuation; the market has been doing well and demand is still strong, the lulls in the market have been greatly reduced of late, due to the decrease in available homes so the buyers are still looking. Our

advice from Double and Megson
Unregistered Land – What’s That All About Then?
To some people’s surprise, there is still a large amount of unregistered land across England and Wales. Registration of land became compulsory across England and Wales in 1990, imposing an obligation on a land owner to register the land on the occurrence of a number of “trigger events”. Under the Land Registration Act 2002, the number of “trigger events” was expanded, and any change of ownership or mortgage of unregistered land results in an obligation to apply for first registration of the land. You can also submit a voluntary application for first registration without one of the “trigger events” having taken place and, in an effort to incentivise people to voluntarily register their land, the Land Registry charge a reduced fee for dealing with voluntary first registration applications. Registration of land provides the following advantages:• It is easier to prove ownership without needing to produce original Deeds. • It helps to protect your land from fraud or from a third party seeking to claim ownership through possession.
• The title plan can make it easier to identify the land. There is often no plan contained within old Deeds or, if there is a plan, it is not always accurate. • It can be easier to change, sell or give your land away in the future as it is easier to prove title to the land. • If land is unregistered, but you have lost the Deeds, it is still possible to apply for first registration but you must provide a Statement of Truth and satisfy the Land Registry of your right to be registered as the owner. The Land Registry are likely to only grant what’s known as a “possessory title” although this can be upgraded to “absolute title” after twelve years, meaning that your ownership of the land is then guaranteed. If you intend to sell your land, the new owner will require you to submit the application for first registration before proceeding with the sale. Double and Megson can deal with applications for voluntary first registration, with or without the title deeds, so please do not hesitate to contact your local office for further information.

| A little bit of History
by Rex Needle
Discovering. . . church walk
The most secluded and tranquil place in Bourne must be Church Walk, the narrow lane which runs from Abbey Road to South Street with the west front of the Abbey Church dominating the scene and the Bourne Eau flowing gently alongside the road. In olden times, this was the main road from Peterborough to Lincoln but diverted to what is now South Street because there were fears that the vibrations from passing stagecoaches were damaging the fabric of the 12th century building. The result is that we now have a quiet thoroughfare with no through traffic, a haven of peace in the heart of a town most frequented by visitors to the Abbey Church. You will also find the vicarage here, built in 1986, and the church hall dating from 1963, while at the far end a path leads past Brook Lodge and the churchyard, which has been closed for burials since 1855, and into South Street, once lined with attractive iron railings that were cut down for the manufacture of munitions during the Second World War of 1939-45 and never replaced. There is also an ancient stone wall at the Abbey Road end, built and repaired over the centuries and therefore containing stones from many periods, often salvaged from old buildings elsewhere in the town including one inscribed with the date 1777 that can be seen by anyone with an eye for the unusual. 54
D I S C O V E R I N G
The elegant Bourne Eau House dominates the west bank of the river, a complex building dating back to the 16th century complete with a Regency cast iron bridge built in 1832 by the Mawby family who then lived there to make their walk shorter to church on Sundays. The house has been greatly altered over the centuries and was once known as The Cedars because of a large and stately cedar tree growing in the garden but it was blown down in a gale in 1976 while those which once towered over the river bank have been cut down for reasons of safety. Ornamental railings finished in black and gold were erected in 2010 to fence off the Bourne Eau although this protection was too late to save the precentor of Lincoln Cathedral who in 1890, when detailing the history of the west front to his visiting choir, stepped backwards to secure a better view and fell into the river. Fortunately, the water was shallow and he scrambled out safely but the boys unanimously decided that it was by far the best part of their outing. Archive photograph of Church Walk from 1930.

| Consumer Advice Don’t Let Cold Callers Give You the Chills as Winter Approaches WINTER is knocking at the door and, as the elements take a toll on your home, so too could the rogue traders. At this time of the year, we can expect gusty winds and heavy rains to play havoc with our home and garden, when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Then there are the frozen pipes and radiators that won’t work after spending the summer months idle, to name just a couple of household niggles. The effects of the elements, if and when they do their damage, are like magnets to the cowboy traders, whose aim is to make even more winter misery for you, while lining their own pockets. Our advice is to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash “up-front” and, more often than not, it will be for work which is totally unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card – if you begin to feel vulnerable or intimidated - and say you will contact them at your convenience, should you need their services. You can then check their contact details, or ask a family member or friend to do so on your behalf. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs that still need planning before the festive season, www.safelocaltrades. com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance engineers, electricians, roofing 12:13 specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs.
MORE THAN DECORATING
However, there are some simple but effective steps that you can take to “winter-proof” your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare or a December disaster:
Internal decorating External decorating Commercial Domestic Industrial Power washing Gutter clean UPVC clean Fascia and soffit clean Carpet clean
Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage.

Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draught points. Invest in some draught excluders to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps don’t leak. Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property, this releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. Get a boiler service every year. As everyone starts to switch on, or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows - so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards, to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. Sweep your chimney. If your chimneys are in use, make sure that they get swept every year. This will remove the build-up of dirt and grime from your chimney walls. For more information about the services we offer, visit www.safelocaltrades.com or call us free on 0800 014 1832.

Skin Masses in Dogs One of the most frequent problems that I am asked to look at during my consultations is that of masses on, or just below, an animal’s skin. Many of these masses are benign or inflammatory masses, some are ‘’locally” malignant tumours, and a few are highly malignant tumours.
their degree of malignancy. We sometimes refer these cases for radiotherapy.
Warts are often seen in older dogs. They are small, hard, often knobbly, usually pink masses that grow very slowly.
Any masses on, or close to, the mammary glands need close attention. Many are benign but there are a significant number with varying degrees of malignancy. There is a wide variation in shapes and textures and anything growing needs attention. These are just a few of the types of masses we see. Some are alright to leave and monitor. Others need to be removed. The majority of skin masses can be cured, following timely removal and, thankfully, only a small number pose a risk to the dog’s life.
Sebaceous cysts can be seen in any age of dog and are more common in some breeds than others. (German Shepherd dogs are especially prone.) These are masses just below the skin, roundish with clear edges. They feel hard but give slightly, when squeezed. These cysts contain a pasty substance and can go up and down in size but rarely get larger than about 2 cms. Sometimes they burst, but usually return later. Lipomas are fatty, soft masses that are often found just under the skin but can also be found in other places. They usually have clear edges and feel soft. They are generally slow to grow but can reach a large size over time.
For any further information, please contact your veterinary practice to have a chat with a vet or a veterinary nurse.
All these three masses do not need removing unless they are causing a problem. There is an interesting skin tumour called a histiocytoma that occurs primarily in young dogs (generally under five). It appears quite suddenly and grows to a button type shape, rarely getting much larger than 1.5 cms. After a few weeks, it gets inflamed and can start oozing. It will usually disappear on its own after a few more weeks. These masses are best checked with your vet. Another fairly common mass that is most frequently found in older dogs is a mast cell tumour, (more common in Boxers than other breeds). This is a mass attached to the skin, it can sometimes look inflamed and will change from day to day. It will grow, but its size can sometimes fluctuate from day to day as well. It can stay the same size for a long time and then suddenly grow. They are a cause for concern, ranging from benign to locally invasive to extremely malignant, and can spread to other areas of the body. It is important that these growths are removed as soon as possible, and are examined to discover

| Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley
Sergeant Mosley’s Musings:
– “Mind”, the Mental Health Charity
Emergency service personnel are often viewed as being mentally strong and able to deal with stress and harrowing incidents with some degree of immunity. However, this is often far from the truth. Studies have shown that those in the emergency services are at greater risk of experiencing a mental health problem than the general population, but are less likely to seek support (“Mind”, mental health charity)). Members of the emergency services deal with some horrific incidents, the sight of which will stay with them for life. We are all human and are affected, in some cases severely, by what we see and deal with on a daily basis. Strangely, it is only recently that staff welfare is being looked at with any great scrutiny, and steps are now being taken to address the issue of mental health in the workplace among the emergency services.
“Mind” is delivering its Blue Light Programme to provide mental health support for emergency services staff and volunteers from police, search and rescue, fire and ambulance services across England, including Lincolnshire. This starts with volunteers who are employees or volunteers in the emergency services. These volunteers are Blue Light Champions and receive training from “Mind” to take action in the workplace, to raise awareness of mental health problems and challenge mental health stigma. I completed my training with colleagues from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and the East Midlands Ambulance Service on October 6th this year. The reason why I give this date is that it was also the day that Lincolnshire Police signed the Blue Light Time to Change pledge, to demonstrate its commitment to challenge mental health stigma and promote positive wellbeing.
For more information, go to www.mind.org.uk/news-campaigns/campaigns/bluelight Members of the emergency services, volunteers or their families, who need advice on their mental health or wellbeing can call, e-mail or text the Blue Light Infoline for independent and confidential support, advice and signposting. | Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram Winter Driving: Think Carefully and Prepare Thoroughly Welcome to November’s motoring section. As the seasons roll by, we find ourselves now approaching the winter months, and the challenges that winter brings to road users. A fundamental concept of road safety is how we, as drivers, are willing and able to adapt our behaviour to the challenges of external factors outside the car, distractions inside the car and even our own state of mind. Harsh weather conditions are an external factor over which we have no control, but we need to adapt our thinking in order to accommodate it. This responsibility has been with drivers ever since we started using ‘mechanically propelled vehicles’, many moons ago. Considerations include: deciding if it wise to make the journey in the first place, changing the route we take in order not to drive on hazardous roads, adjusting the time needed to safely arrive at the destination and ensuring our vehicle is properly prepared to handle the harsher weather.
This last point includes ensuring tyres have sufficient tread depth and pressure, fluid levels are all topped up, and visibility through windscreens and windows is clear. There are local traders in Bourne and Deeping who will provide this service, free of charge; it just needs a little planning to make the time for it to happen – it will be time well spent. Safe driving to you all.
