One to share amongst the Christmas dinner guests as you tuck in to your turkey : A friend recently returned home with his wife, having just enjoyed a meal to celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary. As she opened the small box which he presented her with, expecting at least a ring, she was surprised to see just two paracetamol tablets. “But I haven’t got a headache”, she told him. “Aha !!!” he replied triumphantly. As we edge towards the end of what to many people, has been the most unpredictable year ever, (think Brexit, Leicester City, Trump and, er … Ed Balls to win “Strictly”?) life continues apace and Christmas will soon be upon us. In this month’s issue, you can find so much Christmas-related “stuff”, and it’s been so exciting for us all, having the task of gathering it all together, preparing it and laying it all in front of you in an attractive way – a bit like getting that turkey and trimmings on to the plate on time, I suppose. (“What would you know about that?” I can hear a certain voice in my ear!) Enjoy the read and have a wonderful Christmas.

Time for Tea
– Time to Move On!
Twelve glorious years, (“Well, most of the time”, adds Andrew Spencer), and it’s now time for one of Bourne’s most popular eating establishments to change hands. However, the watch and clock repair arm of the business, under the skilled auspices of top horologist, Kevin Taylor, will remain, but on different premises. (Kevin’s contact details are included below, and he is keen to remind his many valued customers that it’s still a case of “business as usual”, but not on Abbey Road, after the last day of trading on Thursday December 22nd.) A new owner has decided to take the business forward into 2017. This will involve the café being closed for some internal alterations and a refurbishment, with Valentine’s Day, February 14th, as the anticipated opening day. In the meantime, both Andrew and Kevin would like to thank their multitude of wonderful customers
who, over the years, have made it such an enjoyable experience, being able to “step back in time” and offer the public the chance to just relax and have “time for tea”! They also join us in wishing the new owner all the very best for the future.

Perfect Pigs in Blankets
Method • Preheat your oven to Gas Mark 4, 180ºC, Fan 160ºC. Cut each piece of bacon horizontally in half so that you end up with 16 long, thin bacon strips. • In a mixing bowl, toss the chipolata sausages with the Worcestershire sauce, chopped thyme and honey. Mix well to make sure they are coated evenly. Take each sausage and roll up in a piece of bacon. • Arrange the pigs in blankets on a baking sheet, ensuring they are well spaced out, and roast them for about 35 minutes or until dark golden.

Words from the Mayor Councillor Colin Pattison Our “Civic Dinner and Charity Fundraiser” evening was held on Friday October 21st at the Corn Exchange, and was attended by 109 invitees, including various fellow local civic heads, dignitaries, local business leaders, family and friends. My wife and I are so grateful to all those who not only attended, but contributed to making the evening such a fantastic success. The “Sheep Race” within the first ten minutes certainly seemed to have hit the
Another busy month, supporting our fellow mayors at charity fundraising events, and celebrating the hard and unselfish work of the Order of St John with the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire in Spalding. We had the pleasure of opening the Bourne Bonfire and Fireworks Spectacular on what was a bitterly cold evening. Thank you so much to the Round Table and PTFA of the Bourne Abbey C of E Primary Academy and their army of helpers who put on such an awesome display. Special mention to not only the school choir and Revolver for keeping us all in good voice, but to the Master of Ceremonies Norman Brown, (top job my friend!) We also opened the “Garden of Remembrance” at the Darby and Joan Hall. Thankfully, with pleasing late autumn sunshine, there was a huge turn-out for Remembrance Sunday, to honour all those that have given and paid the ultimate sacrifice, those who are disabled and wounded, and those who continue to serve for us now, so that we may be kept safe. It was a very poignant moment for me to lay a wreath on behalf of the town as, like so many others, I have a family member honoured on the list of those brave souls who 14

mark, judging by the smiles and laughter. The wonderful Bourne Westfield Academy Primary School Choir was brilliantly led and organised by Rebecca Beavis, and, with local duo “Santa Fe”, they provided some memorable music. The evening raised over £1000 towards my chosen charities, and a sincere thank-you once more to all those involved.

Talking Turkey … but not for everyone! • It is estimated that the UK will be consuming approximately ten million turkeys this month, with the majority of families (76%) around the UK serving it up as the centrepiece of their festive meal this Christmas. • Turkey is a relative newcomer to the Yuletide table - it was a luxury right up until the 1950s, when they became more widely available, aided by the increased availability of “the fridge”. Traditional Christmas fare used to include roast swan, pheasants and peacocks. A special treat was a roast boar’s head, decorated with holly and fruit. • Traditions for many countries around the world vary enormously, where the centrepiece can range from pork chops to curried goat! Norway: The big festive feast takes place on Christmas Eve. Most people around the coastal regions eat fish - concoctions of cod and haddock and a variety called lutefisk. Inland, they go for pork chops, specially prepared sausages and occasionally lamb. Sweden: The Christmas feast consists of a smorgasbord of caviar, shellfish, cooked and raw fish and cheeses. Ukraine: The people here prepare huge broths brimming with meat for Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day.

Czech Republic: Tradition dictates that the tree is not lit before Christmas Eve; then they have a big dinner of fish soup, salads, eggs and carp. Germany: The Germans tend to have a game feast on Christmas Day, usually wild boar or venison. Jamaica: Christmas dinner usually consists of rice, gungo peas, chicken, ox tail and curried goat. Italy: Christmas dinner in Italy can last for more than four hours. Most families will have seven or more courses, including antipasti, a small portion of pasta, a roast meal, followed by two salads and two sweet puddings - then cheese fruit, brandy and chocolates. Austria: A typical Christmas dinner would consist of braised carp, served with gingerbread and beer sauce. Poland: The traditional Christmas Eve supper consists of twelve non-meat dishes, representing the months of the year and featuring fish such as pike, herring and carp. Think Before You Drink, Before You Drive
The festive season is well and truly underway and, of course, Christmas is usually a time to eat, drink and be merry. Lincolnshire Police, just like all the other police forces around the country, will be conducting roadside checks to arrest and prosecute those drivers who drive whilst under the influence of drink or drugs. The police are allowed to stop any vehicle at their discretion, and will often set up drink driving check-points over periods such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. These checks can be carried out anytime of the day or night. In the UK, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath or 107mg of alcohol in 100 ml of urine but this doesn’t mean anything to most people. There is no fool-proof way of drinking and staying under the limit. The amount of alcohol you would need to drink to be considered over the driving limit varies from person to person. It depends on: • Your weight, age, sex and metabolism (the rate your body uses energy).

Bourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan Your chance to shape the future of the parish of Bourne Last month’s copy of Discovering Bourne contained a questionnaire asking the people of the parish of Bourne for their thoughts and ideas as to how they think the parish should be developed in future. Neighbourhood planning is about letting the people who know about and care for an area, plan for it. It is led by the residential and business community, not the council, and is about building neighbourhoods – not stopping growth. Neighbourhood planning is optional but, if adopted, a Neighbourhood Plan will have weight, becoming part of the statutory plan-making framework for the area.

Be safe and be seen on the roads Pedestrians, cyclists and riders are encouraged to be safe and be seen, as winter approaches. Statistics reveal that shorter days lead to a rise in road casualties, particularly for the most vulnerable groups such as children, cyclists, motorcyclists and the elderly. Clair George, road safety officer for the Safer Peterborough Prevention and Enforcement Service, said, “Evidence indicates that there is a rise in the number of collisions at this time of year, both in the mornings and afternoons, as road users adapt to a combination of changing factors such as poorer weather conditions and pedestrians not wearing reflective or bright clothing.” Parents and guardians with school children should make

sure their child can be clearly seen by wearing something ‘hi-vis’. During 2015, 90 young people aged 15 and under were injured on Peterborough roads, three suffering serious injuries. The number of cyclists injured in 2015 was 99, including one fatality, and the number of pedestrians injured was 52, including seven seriously. Cyclists should also remember it is an offence to cycle at night without a front light, a rear light and a red rear reflector. Join Thorpe Hall Hospice’s “Lights of Love” Carol Concert For hundreds of people across the area, “Lights of Love” has become a key event in the festive calendar. This year’s event, taking place on Sunday December 11th, will focus on giving guests the opportunity to remember, reflect and celebrate the lives of people close to them. The centrepiece will, as usual, be Thorpe Hall’s Lights of Love trees, decked out with handwritten messages of love, remembrance and inspiration. Peterborough Concert Band will be playing a selection of favourite carols for guests to join in with and Hereward Harmony Barbershop Chorus will be providing entertainment with festive songs. While the carol concert will take place outside, with the mansion house as the backdrop, Thorpe Hall’s Coffee Shop will be open for traditional warming snacks. The entertainment will start at
6pm in the grounds of Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Longthorpe, Peterborough and finish at 7.15pm. Entrance is free. Hypnotherapy: Myths & Facts
T
he popularity of complementary therapies to treat ailments such as addiction, phobias, weight problems and various health conditions, has soared in recent years. However, a large number of people are still sceptical about hypnotherapy as an effective alternative form of therapy. I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist and have worked with a vast range of patients to help cure them of their phobias, addictions, anxieties, depression and many other conditions. I can help with smoking, IBS, insomnia, panic attacks and OCD. I want to help dispel the common myths from the facts surrounding hypnotherapy and its effectiveness. MYTH – The hypnotherapist will use a pendulum One of the most common preconceptions about hypnotherapy is that the hypnotherapist will swing a pendulum in front of the patient to send them into a trance-like state, and then click their fingers when they want to wake them up. Hypnotherapy is more like guiding people through to a very relaxed state of mind, like a daydream, to access the altered state of consciousness. When I am with a patient, I talk to them and encourage them to enter a deep tranquil state and it is very gradual. FACT – Hypnotherapy is similar to meditation The deep state of relaxation you experience during hypnotherapy has often been compared to the state of being that is achieved from meditation. This is because you are quietening the conscious part of your mind, allowing the subconscious to take over. MYTH – Only gullible people can be hypnotised
This definitely isn’t true. Anyone can be hypnotised, but treatment is usually more effective for patients who really desire a change and cure. For example, if a smoker really wants to quit the habit and is choosing to seek therapy for it, this will be more beneficial than if say, they still enjoy smoking but their partner wants to make them quit. On the whole, hypnosis is very successful, although it relies on the patient being open to change. FACT – Hypnotherapy is safe Like meditation, hypnotherapy is 100% safe and patients can open their eyes and come out of their relaxed state at any point during the process. It’s a completely natural practice; therefore there are no health and safety risks for the patient. MYTH – You can be made to do anything whilst under hypnosis Unfortunately, “stage hypnosis”, where a person is hypnotised in front of an audience, has encouraged people to have sceptical views on hypnotherapy as a valid form of treatment. This type of hypnosis is very much about entertaining the audience and the person undergoing the hypnosis will be going along with it all, to add to the entertainment factor. FACT – A person has total control when they are hypnotised You will always be 100% in control throughout hypnotherapy. Unless you’re taking part in “stage hypnosis”, you won’t be made to run around doing silly things and making a fool of yourself. Hypnosis is the process of re-wiring your subconscious mind in order to make you think differently, not act differently. MYTH – You will reveal your deepest darkest secrets under hypnosis By reaching an alternate state of
consciousness during hypnosis, your unconscious is more receptive to the suggestions made by your hypnotherapist. This cannot make you say or do anything under hypnosis that you don’t want to do. You are completely in control and empowered throughout the process. FACT – A person in hypnotic state is still aware of their surroundings Clients have reported different experiences following treatment. However, during the process the patient will always be aware of their surroundings, and be able to hear sounds. There appears to be a rise in terms of both use, and research, into this ancient tradition. It has played an important role in human health and welfare, for more than a thousand years. It has a variety of uses in healthcare systems around the world, outside of the realm of conventional medicine. There are numerous reports mentioned in history, where a prescription has been given to patients that include cupping therapy for a number of diseases. From Egyptian papyrus to Ancient Greek medicine, cupping has found its way into most historical medical theories. Even the great Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, preached about the benefits of cupping, for many conditions, including musculoskeletal diseases of the back, gynaecological complaints, ear ailments and lung diseases. Cupping works by helping to extract blood from the body which may be harmful to the patient. This invites, and increases, the flow of fresh new blood into the cupped area, to aid in the healing process. A cupping glass is applied to the predefined area of skin, and a vacuum is generated, to encourage skin to be dragged into the glass. This will also improve blood circulation, and relieve painful muscle tension. There have been a number of research trials in recent years, all of which have found cupping to be very beneficial for musculo-skeletal conditions, facial paralysis, herpes zoster, and can also have a surprisingly beneficial effect on organ health. Changing Times Ahead, but Have a Merry Christmas First! The famous red truck will soon be gracing our TV screens and we all know what that means. Too much food, drink, overly excited children and some festive good times. With all that has happened this year, I think we all owe it to ourselves to enjoy this Christmas. Taking time out of our hectic lives to try and rebuild some bridges across the divides that have affected our country is something we should all put at the top of our “Christmas Wish Lists”, and I’m sure the same will be on the minds of many of our American friends and relatives.

The Potting Shed
• Sow some broad beans in a sheltered spot- I did this last year and had a really good crop, free from black fly! • Keep picking leeks and parsnips, but if the weather is very wet check that the leeks are not getting waterlogged and rotting.

ot much to do this month in the allotment, especially if you have “put it to bed” for the winter months. Now is a good time, then, to clean tools, seed trays, pots and other equipment, as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also, give the shed a good tidy out and clean. Some jobs that you can do are:• If you intend to grow peas or beans next year, dig in plenty of organic matter as they require nutrient- rich soil. • Lift the last of your carrots, turnips and beetroot, and put a mulch of straw around parsnips to prevent them being frozen into the ground. • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins. • As long as the soil is not frozen, you can continue winter digging. • Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves. • Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them.

• Bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted if the soil is suitable – not frozen or water logged. One way I enjoy using up my vegetables is making a hearty soup – I use carrots, potatoes, parsnips, onions, leeks and anything else that I may have (even left -over cooked veg). I then whizz them in the food processor so they are in small pieces, put them in a large saucepan, cover them with water and add a few chicken stock cubes (vegetable, if you are a vegetarian), bring it to the boil, and skim off any scum. Then I add between half and a whole small bag of orange lentils. Simmer this until well-cooked and enjoy with some good crusty bread. I usually make a big stock pot full, and freeze the rest in measured portions. At Christmas, I add any left-over turkey, ham, pork and cooked veg. As you can see, it is not a precise science as I add what I have, but always make sure there are plenty of potatoes, carrots and onion. Well that’s about it for this year. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year!

How to stop Windows 10 update restarting your PC during the day Many of you will have experienced it. You’re in the middle of something and your PC suddenly wants to restart for updates, or even restarts without prompting you.
In the window that pops up, select the time that you want to restrict from restarts for updates, (in the example shown from 8am-8pm.)
Microsoft have got more and more aggressive on forcing updates on us, but you can set aside a ‘work time’ where the updates will not be installed.
Rather annoyingly, Microsoft limit this to a 12 hour period (shows how hard they work over there!!)

| Consumer Advice Don’t let pickpockets ruin your seasonal shopping and festive cheer WHILE we are being increasingly warned about telephone scams and credit card fraud, police have issued a warning about a seasonal crime, of which any of us could become a victim. With many people entering the festive spirit and hitting the high street with their Christmas shopping list, it’s the pickpockets who are out to spoil our seasonal fun and cause a lot of heartache and misery. A fresh wave of pickpockets and purse dippers are taking their chances (particularly in the crowded Peterborough city centre) and, without an ounce of goodwill, are now shockingly targeting charity shops. It’s so easy when we are busy and in a rush not to zip up bags or put phones away properly, but it is so very important to be extra vigilant at this time of year, especially in light of Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s warning. Remember to: • Keep your valuables out of sight. • Zip up hand and shoulder bags. • Carry bags in front of you with flaps against your body. • Keep straps short and bags tucked under your arm. • Don’t show your money - keep it safely in your pocket and when using the ATM, always ensure that your money has been secured in your purse or wallet before turning away. 12:13 Wise up to pickpocket tricks: • The Helpful Stranger: someone may approach you and say that you have something on your jacket or coat and will automatically rub it off, allowing them to get close to you. • The Hugger Mugger: a stranger may pretend to be sociable and friendly and will put their arms around you or link their arm through yours with a view to picking your pockets. • The Easy Dip: pickpockets will be watching and, if your bag or backpack is left open, they may follow you until they get the opportunity to dip in and remove easy items that are on show. • The Distraction: typically using a map, a stranger may ask you for directions and whilst you are pointing out directions on the map, another person will carry out the pickpocket whilst you are distracted. • The Stall: as a lot of pickpockets work in pairs, they will identify their victim and one person will deliberately stand in front you, at a counter, getting on a train or bus etc, and will stall for some reason. The other person is directly behind the victim, allowing them to get up close to carry out the crime. • The Concealed Hand: pickpockets often use items such as a newspaper to cover their hand whilst they rob you. “Buy to Let Tax Reliefs”
– What’s That All About Then? Landlords could struggle to make a profit, following the recent decision to reduce mortgage interest tax relief. Landlords can claim tax relief on their mortgage interest payments, so they can offset the cost of the interest on their mortgage against rental income, when they calculate their profits. Put simply, if a landlord collects rental of £10,000 a year, but pays mortgage interest of £9,000, the profit is £1,000 (this excludes any other expenses). In this simplified example, a basicrate taxpayer would pay 20% tax on £1,000,( £200), and keep £800. The tax bill for a 40% taxpayer would be £400, leaving £600, or £450 for a taxpayer at the 45% additional rate, leaving £550. Reduction in relief The Summer Budget announced that landlords would no longer be able to deduct all their mortgage interest when they work out their profits. Mortgage interest tax relief will gradually be cut back to 20% between 2017 and 2020. So, our landlord with rental income of £10,000 and £9,000 of mortgage interest to pay will, in future, have to pay tax on the full amount, less a 20% credit on the mortgage interest. Let’s assume that they are a 40% taxpayer, the new calculation
becomes 40% tax on the rental = £4,000, less a relief of 20% of the interest (£9,000) = £1,800, which amounts to £2,200, as opposed to £400 under the current rules; if they were a 45% tax payer, the result is £2,700, against £450. Effect on profits For a higher-rate taxpayer, this will wipe out your returns; if your mortgage interest is 75% or more of your rental income, the figure is 68% for a 45% taxpayer. (source Smith & Williamson). The liability for a 20% taxpayer is unchanged. However, the new calculation could push them into a higher tax band. Impact on limited companies Limited companies are not affected by the changes to mortgage interest tax relief, so many landlords are setting up a company to minimise the impact. However, remember that HMRC will treat any transfer of ownership of a property as a sale, so there could be a capital gains tax bill and stamp duty to pay. The mortgage options might also be limited, because lenders offer a restricted choice of home loans to companies.

Other restrictions on reliefs The tax attack on landlords does not stop at mortgage interest. There are also restrictions on the wear and tear allowance. Landlords will no longer be able to deduct 10% of their profits as wear and tear. They will only be able to claim tax relief on costs that they have actually incurred, such as a new sofa or bed for the property, and they will have to keep receipts. All Change for Emanay and her “Pet Shop Girls” Emanay Peters has taken the ambitious step of becoming the owner of Bourne’s only specialist pet shop, the large and very well-stocked Petorama Petshop Ltd, on West Street. Having qualified as a dog groomer and establishing her “Hair of the Dog” business on these premises, the opportunity arose for Emanay to fulfil her ambition to actually own and run the whole operation. After thirty years in charge of this very successful business, Emanay’s grandmother, Jane Lees, has now retired, knowing that Emanay is proud to be able to “keep it in the family”. Emanay has embarked upon a learning curve, bordering on the vertical at times, but with superb support and encouragement from Karen Foston, (sharing her knowledge and expertise gained from her many years at the

What Happened to the Vets?
When I qualified as a veterinary surgeon, thirty-four years ago, it was recognised that the veterinary profession was probably the most trusted and respected of all professions. Our main aim was to treat and look after the animals in our care to the best of our ability. Now I commonly hear things like: “All the vets are interested in is the money”, “The first question I was asked was whether or not my pet was insured” and “Every time I go to the vet they try and sell me something”. We have lost much of the trust that we originally had. Fortunately, most vets still really care about you and your pet, so what has changed? All veterinary surgeries are a business and they have to make enough money to be able to continue giving their services. When I qualified, veterinary businesses could only be owned by veterinary surgeons, but even in those times a small number of people came to realise the potential earning power of veterinary businesses and I believe this was the start of when we, as a profession, became less trusted. This situation worsened when non-vets were allowed to own veterinary businesses and this signalled the start of corporate ownership. Recently, two of the largest veterinary corporates were floated on the Stock Exchange.
It is true that there are many more operations and procedures that can be performed now which are often expensive, but this just leaves many people behind when they find they cannot afford it and nobody will allow them credit to pay over a period of time. Charging structures have changed, and there has been a 40% increase in veterinary fees in the last five years in many places. Then there is the up-selling and other business practices. If we are not careful, the next thing could perhaps be global ownership of veterinary businesses! We have to move with the times, and we need to make sure we offer services that our clients want and benefit from, but we must also keep an eye on why we do this job in the first place, which is for the love of the animals.
This does not mean that the vets working in these situations care any less about animals or do not do their very best for you. However, there is more financial influence. For a start, the shareholders want a good return on their investment, then the directors expect good salaries as well as the managers, and then finally the vets and nurses need paying. This whole structure requires the vets to earn more, as compared to privately owned surgeries, (unless the owner wants large houses, expensive cars and a yacht!)

How often in the lead up to Christmas can you see into houses in the evenings, with curtains open, displaying the Christmas tree in the window with its lights sparkling, and a small pile of presents under the tree, waiting to be opened? Christmas is the time when we stock our homes with the latest electronic gadgets, computers, jewellery and must-have accessories. Unfortunately, it provides thieves with the perfect incentive and the opportunity to commit burglaries. By taking some simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim. Leave lights on timers, coming on and going off at different set times. Invest in motion sensor security lights to light up your home’s exterior. When it comes to outdoor festive lighting, install outdoor electrical outlets and don’t feed the cable through an open window. Do not place any presents under the Christmas tree until Christmas Eve. If you cannot avoid this, make sure that when you’re not at home, your curtains are drawn. Set your house alarm if you have one and ensure all windows, doors and gates are secure. Always secure your garden shed or outbuilding like you would your home.
Dispose of gift packaging carefully. Fold boxes so that they do not advertise your new presents. Shred or burn any personal paperwork and envelopes with your name and address displayed. Be careful though not to shred any important warranty details! If you’re going away at Christmas, be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Discovering. . .
the ghost of the Red Hall
Many of our historic buildings are reputed to have ghosts, among them the early 17th century Red Hall at Bourne where the grey lady is supposed to haunt its rooms although no one seems to have suggested who this might be. Among those who lived at the Red Hall was Catherine Digby who went there as a young bride in 1796 and remained in occupation until her death in 1836, becoming known throughout the town as a kindly lady much given to good works although there also appears to be a touch of sadness about her life. Her father, the Rev Humphrey Hyde, was Vicar of Bourne, and she was still a young woman when she met James Digby, a wealthy landowner who had come to live at the Red Hall. They were married at the Abbey Church in 1796 when he was 60 years old while she was only 23. She inherited her father’s estate when he died in 1807 and when James died in 1811, aged 76, he left her the Red Hall and an immense fortune and so she was able to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle while spending her spare time cultivating a large and beautiful garden around the hall which attracted many visitors. Catherine played an influential part in the affairs of the town, a staunch Anglican and thoughtful benefactress who liked to be known as Lady of the Manor. She died 66

childless on 29th February 1836, aged 63, and was given a grand funeral at the Abbey Church, and so the ownership of the Red Hall passed to relatives. She was the last private resident to own and live at the Red Hall which was subsequently sold to the Bourne and Essendine Railway Company to become part of the railway station and it remained in commercial use until the line closed in 1959 when the building was acquired by Bourne United Charities on behalf of the town. Today, the grey lady is said to haunt the Red Hall, flitting through the upstairs rooms and down the staircase of the Grade II listed mansion, a tale no doubt perpetuated, as with many country houses, because of the combination of light and shade on moonlit nights. Stories of such an apparition have persisted over the years and as no other woman had such a long connection with the house, perhaps Catherine, our self-styled Lady of the Manor who was so reluctant to leave, should be the first choice as the ghost of the Red Hall. Decision Making. Consider the options you have available for dealing with this hazard. There may be more than one. Attempt to decide on an option that favours your particular strengths.
“A key skillset for learner drivers is the developing of an effective method for managing driving around hazards that crop up. Hazards that cause us to change speed and/or direction I refer to as critical incidents, as they absolutely MUST be dealt with, but the question that learners want to know is… “How?” Let me split this up into separate skills: Identification. Try to develop your ability to spot these types of hazards in good time. I recommend at least ten seconds before you arrive at it – this is key, because it buys you thinking time, AND time to perform the necessary actions. Assessment. How will this hazard affect you? Can you anticipate how this hazard may develop in the next
Reflect. What went well, what could have been better, would you like to try that again? By practising and refining this skillset, it will help you to develop a technique that will be useful to you for the rest of your driving life. It encourages you to make decisions that are centred around the analysis of your strengths/weaknesses, and furthermore, when you are practising with BIG TOM, do not concern yourself with making incorrect decisions - that is how we all learn. It is the act of making conscious decisions, and reflecting on the outcome that will enable you to develop your self-awareness, which is a life-long skill.” Safe driving to you all around Christmas time!
