Introduction
Welcome to Your February Issue.
And so, hold on tight, here comes Valentine’s Day! I think these words from the French author, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, strike a truly romantic tone for me: “Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction”. Whilst you’re all “looking outward” then, I hope you enjoy the many ways in which this month’s issue stirs up those wonderful emotions. However, if that doesn’t have the required effect, don’t worry, there’s a recipe for pancakes for later in the month - love will find a way!
Claire x New beginnings are already here – spring lambs, aconites and daffodils bringing hope that warmer weather won’t be far behind. This month’s magazine, though, highlights some other “new beginnings”. Read how several entrepreneurs in our part of the world are striking out with their ambitious new business ventures. We wish them all the very best for the future. Finally, upon entering a pub quiz in Glasgow recently, a friend of mine was baffled by his very first question – “Hey you! What’re you looking at, Jimmy?” Apologies then to all of our Scottish readers and, just as we’re about to feast on one of your greatest inventions of haggis, neaps and tatties, (it being close to Burns Night on January 25th, as I write), many thanks for that. Enjoy the read!
John

Valentine's Day - February 14th - What’s that all about then? Take a brief romantic stroll through the centuries, up to today’s commercial orgy of flowers, jewellery and chocolates. In Ancient Rome, February 13th, 14th and 15th were celebrated as “Lupercalia”, a pagan fertility festival, seen as a basis for a celebration of love on this date. AD 289 - A Christian, Valentine of Rome, is martyred under Emperor Claudius. While in jail, this priest is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter’s sight. He is later said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying “From your Valentine”, but this is apocryphal.
1797 – “The Young Man’s Valentine Writer” is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and, as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine’s Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to mass-produce them.
AD 496 - Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be “St Valentine’s Day”, a Christian feast day to match the still-popular pagan festival of Lupercalia.
Mid-1980s - The commercialisation continues: noting the sales effect on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine’s Day as a time for giving jewellery and so the “tradition” takes off.
Mid-18th century - The passing of love-notes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine’s Day card as we know it today. Early ones are made of lace and paper.
AD 2017 - An estimated 1 billion St Valentine’s Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most card-heavy celebration, after Christmas.
Love is… A beautiful bouquet! ST VALENTINES DAY Tuesday 14th February

A Little Something Fabulous

ust over a year ago, Teresa Kerr-Morgan and her son Joe, (21), opened the doors of “A Little Something” on Bourne’s South Street. A wide range of shabby chic furniture and assorted gifts and accessories filled the shop, and the people came in large numbers and beautified their homes with some original and, at times, quirky pieces of furniture.
for the fashionistas of the town, the opportunity to pick up some quality garments, which Teresa agrees are particularly competitively priced. Lagenlook Clothing, Izabel of London and Apricot are the leading designer labels for the ladies clothing items on display. Tasteful costume jewellery and some sterling silver pieces, alongside gloves, scarves and a collection of bags, all add to the overall impression of a classy accumulation, created by someone with a keen eye for what, together, will look fabulous. There is also the recognition that the provision of “plus-size garments” can create the fabulous feeling too.
However, acknowledging that the time had come to move away from this particular range of merchandise, Teresa decided that Bourne was well overdue an Italian designer clothing outlet. This inspired change of direction has led to the addition of the name “Fabulous” above her shop front but, more importantly

includes bouquets, wands, corsages, button-holes and “thank-you bouquets”. Further embellishment can come in the form of table centre-pieces, top-table arrangements, flower arches and church pew-end displays.
n a large shed, between Bourne and Market Deeping, there is a new business, still in its infancy after seven months, but one which is looking forward eagerly to the coming months, when the “wedding season” will be in full swing. Francesca Middleton is Co-Director with her partner in Bloom U.K. Ltd. and they operate out of their home at Kates Bridge. One of the weddings, for which their beautiful arrangements will be on display, is their own, later this year! This family-run firm also comprises Francesca’s seventeen-year old step-son, currently studying business management, and who is getting a more thorough “work experience” than most.
Francesca offers a consultation, via a home visit; then she is central to the whole design process. This re-assurance that a design expert is in charge removes much of the “big-day stress”, aided by the knowledge that the floral arrangements will be in place, in pristine condition on the day, and will still be there as beautiful mementoes of the special day, long afterwards. The entirely silk, foam and real-touch materials are very popular and many of them are British Florist Association-approved.
Bloom U.K. provide a bespoke personal service for a wide range of artificial flower arrangements, principally for weddings. This

1) Pick a pancake style Almost every country and culture has its own version of pancakes, from a Malaysian ‘Lempeng’, made with banana and coconut; to a French crepe; a fat Canadian pancake stack, or classic British pancakes served with sugar and lemon. The mixture for pancakes differs depending on the country’s readily available ingredients, such as corn in Venezuela, cabbage in Japan, and rice in Nepal. All types of pancakes are relatively easy to make, so why not consider trying some different kinds to spice up your Pancake Day?
2) Fat matters
Main Course Roast 4oz fillet of Hereford beef fillet, braised blade of beef, chive mashed potato, sautéed mushrooms, button onions and smoked bacon, thyme gravy

This Pancake Day (Tuesday, February 28th) don’t be a flop. Just ditch the packet mix and impress your friends and family with delicious homemade pancakes. They take minutes to make and are tastier and better for you, so please see below some top tips on hosting a ‘flipping perfect’ Pancake Day, from Head Chef, Gary Durrant, at Five Star boutique hotel, The Arch, London.
Bourne
If you are making traditional English pancakes, make sure to use plenty of fat to get the batter nice and crispy. If you use oil, then I recommend vegetable oil, and if you use butter, then clarified butter works best.
3) Timing Pancakes should usually only take about two to three minutes to cook, but it’s best to ignore the clock and check for bubbles on the top of the pancake, which means it’s ready to flip over. Make sure not to cook it for much longer than two to three minutes, though, as the batter could dry out.
4) Toppings Pancakes are delicious both sweet and savoury, depending on your taste. They go very well with fresh fruit, chocolate, and maple syrup, but equally well with ham, cheese, and bacon. Try using different cheeses such as brie, ricotta, or blue cheese, which all taste amazing when melted inside a crispy pancake.
5) Hitting the pan Don’t just dollop the mixture into the pan with any old kitchen utensil. It's helpful if you spoon the batter into the pan using a large ladle, so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the pan, tip it around from side to side, to get the base evenly coated with a nice thin layer of batter. Fe br u a r y 2 0 1 7

f enthusiasm and ambitious planning alone could guarantee future success, then Jane Webb would be right out there, ahead of the field. It is Jane who has recently acquired the “Time for Tea” cafe, which was once one of Bourne’s most popular eateries, before its owners retired just before Christmas, and it is Jane who has such a clear and passionate plan for what the future will hold for the now re-named Ginger Fox Café. She enthuses over how new colleagues, Phil Bonham, (ex-owner of the hugely popular Pea Pod Pantry) and Head Chef, Alison Waters, will bring such flair and quality to the proceedings. Advance notice here for: “The Great Phil versus Alison Brownie Bake-Off”! The grand opening of the totally re-furbished premises is scheduled for January 31st , with the first of Jane’s planned “Specials” to follow
a fortnight later, with Valentine’s Day afternoon teas, (to include rosebud tea and heartshaped cakes). The premises, (all low ceilings and small rooms), will retain their quaint charm with the flagged floor on entering a prominent feature. A new soft seating area in part of the café and extensive re-decoration throughout will represent the changes that the returning customers will see. But much more than that … a forever changing menu, guest coffees, take-away picnics, ice-cream parlour … the prospects look staggering!

he final months of 2016 saw yet another entrepreneur establish a new business in Bourne, but this one was a “sisters-in-law combo” and, since the end of October, the whole experience has been, to quote Sarah Carter, “totally manic!” This is Sarah, whose younger sisterin-law is Hanna Williams, and together, they are in charge of Bourne Photographic Studios, housed in re-furbished premises on Cherry Holt Road. Sarah has eight years’ experience as a freelance photographer, where the bulk of her commissions were for weddings and babies. Hanna, meanwhile, has recently gained photography qualifications and arrives from a printing background. Together, they could see an opening in the market in their rapidly-expanding town, and have grabbed it. An emphasis is placed on the photography sitting, within the studio, being “the whole experience”,
with refreshments and snacks, toys and a play area, to make it all as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. Special events, such as the recent Christmas week-end, where party snacks and goody bags (and even some “respite care” for the accompanying parents!) seem typical of these young ladies’ enthusiastic plans. Look out for Mother’s Day and Easter “Specials”, coming up soon. Future plans also involve hiring out some of their studio space for camera clubs or for individuals’ projects. Another studio is also likely to be on stream before long. Clearly, two very ambitious ladies, and the glowing comments on their bulging Facebook pages would seem to indicate that they’ve got it right!

by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness We are often called a nation of pet lovers and, even if you don’t own a pet, it is likely you would want to treat animals with kindness. Imagine having a dog and dragging it out of its bed every morning without breakfast, making it work all day without stopping for a break, throwing it a biscuit to keep it going then finally feeding it before sending it to bed exhausted. Imagine repeating this exercise day after day, without giving it the correct amount of exercise, fresh air or rest. Most of us would consider this a cruel and unfair way to treat an animal, and yet many of us treat our own bodies with as little respect. If you started the New Year with the resolution of looking after yourself, whether it is to lose weight, to become fitter, to tone up your wobbly bits or to eat more healthily, then now is the time to put
yourself top of the priority list. If you can spare yourself thirty minutes, two or three times a week, we can help you make a plan to achieve your goals. You will benefit from a personal mentor to work with you.

Will people know it’s my first time? Will people judge me?” are all natural thoughts. However, in order to make a change, we need to take that first step and we can help you do this in a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment.

How to Get the Most out of your New Year’s Resolutions New Year’s resolutions seem a long time ago now, but it’s never too late to kick-start them; so how do you get the most out of your gym routine and how much exercise should you do to stay healthy?
There is no denying that exercise is good for you. We know that those who perform a moderate amount of exercise on a regular basis are considerably less likely to suffer from diseases such as diabetes, stroke and heart attack or experience insomnia. Exercise helps older people maintain their independence, and is one of the most effective methods of weight management. It is also very important for our psychological health, as it stimulates the release of endorphins, natural pain-killing chemicals that can also improve our mood. However, some people become a little disenchanted when the exercise they do doesn’t have the desired effect. Knowing what types of exercises are most likely to achieve your goals is not always obvious and will vary from person to person. Matthew Rodgers from the Institute of Osteopathy says, “As a general rule, if you are trying to build larger muscles, the most effective method is to use a weight which you can
manage to lift eight to ten times before the muscles fatigue. If you are looking for stronger, leaner muscles, a weight programme based upon twenty repetitions would be more appropriate. If you are trying to lose weight, cardiovascular exercise (anything that gets your heart-rate up such as running, swimming, dancing or football) is the way to go. In order to be most effective, this should be performed at 60 – 80% of your maximum heart rate, which is a lot less strenuous than you might think (Subtracting your age from 220 will give you your advised maximum heart-rate. You can buy a heartrate monitor from most good sports shops or online). It’s also important not to train every day. The body needs time to respond to the strain of the training, and it’s during the recovery period that the gain takes place.” It takes about four to six weeks to start noticing the health benefits of exercise, so doing something you really enjoy makes it more likely that you will persist.

If you are aged between nineteen and sixty-four, research suggests that you perform at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity cardiovascular exercise each week, plus muscle strengthening exercises on at least two separate days of that week. The good news is that these exercises do not need to be all in one go, and activities such as walking briskly to work (if your journey is more than ten minutes) count as part of the total. If you’re out of this age group, or want to know more about what would class as moderate or vigorous exercises, visit the NHS choices website at www.nhs.uk/ Livewell/fitness/Pages/physicalactivity-guidelines-for-adults.aspx At the Wellhead Practice, our team of osteopaths and remedial sports therapist can screen you for any health concerns that might affect your ability to exercise, help to resolve any injuries or pain that might be holding you back and advise you on what exercises might suit your goals the best.

On her days off, Rosemary tutors and lectures up and down the country for the SSF, having trained literally hundreds of shoe store staff members over the past twenty-seven years with the Society. She says, “Shoe fitting as a trade is dying. Shop staff are told to put money in tills and get shoes off the shelves - but very few of them know much about foot health. It’s so important – wrong fitting shoes can damage ankles, knees, backs and even cause migraine.” Rosemary began as a shoe store 22

Ben Potter – Competition Winner and Keen Reader of “Discovering Bourne” Congratulations to young Ben Potter, who won our very popular Christmas Novelty Hunt Competition. According to his mum, Nicola, Ben is obsessed with jelly cat teddies and with art. It’s no surprise then that his winnings will go towards a visit to Concept Gift Shop for the teddies, and Fovia, so that Ben can re-stock his art supplies. Paint a Pot Place and M&Co are also on his “hit-list”, for a share of his loot, that is if he can ever tear himself away from the fantastic reading material we see resting in his hands!

I’m 61 now and I don’t think I’ll ever retire! I still get satisfaction helping a customer and finding them the right shoes. You can pick up so many conditions through looking at people and their feet closely – we picked up autism with one child that the parents hadn’t even realised.” Laura West, secretary of the SSF, said, “Rosemary is quite simply one of the finest shoe fitters in the country. We are delighted she will become our President in 2017 and appreciate the many hundreds of students she has mentored and the service she has provided freely to the public.”

The Meningitis Memory Tree – Another Fabulous Effort!
Free carers sitting service available in your local area Looking after someone makes it very difficult to go out shopping or perhaps to the hairdressers. The Carers Sitter Service provides male and female volunteers, known as ‘sitters’ to provide a respite service. This gives the carers a break, free from worry, knowing that the relative is in the company of an experienced sitter. Whenever possible, we try to match the interests of the person with that of one of our sitters: so they may be doing crosswords, reading, playing cards or dominoes, or just enjoying the conversation and companionship. • We are a Sitting Service offering respite and support for carers free of charge, in their own home. • A Registered Charity working closely with other organisations. • With reliable & caring trained sitters. • We sit for frail elderly people and those incapacitated through chronic illness. For more information please contact the Coordinator at: Carers Sitter Service, Wake House, 41 North Street, Bourne, PE10 9AE. Tel: 01778 420257 • Email: sitterservice@tiscali.co.uk
Anyone having had the pleasure, recently, to venture off North Street or West Street in Bourne and explore the many delights of Crown Walk, will have seen a large Christmas tree festooned with small, colourful ribbons, outside Stephanies, Bourne’s sole floristry shop. This “Meningitis Memory Tree” was erected at the end of November and the public were able to purchase their bow from Stephanie’s shop, for a mere 50p, and then place it on the tree, along with a message in memory of a loved one they may have lost. It all began eleven years ago, when local mum, Hayley Pateman,
tragically lost her seven month old son, Alexander to meningitis. Wishing to raise awareness of the condition and funds to tackle the killer disease, Hayley and her friend, Steph Romaine, initiated the idea of a Memory Tree, and every year since then, this heartwarming tradition has raised literally thousands of pounds. This year, the total stood at £290, until a generous local lady added an extra £11, as a representation of the eleven years, the age Alexander would now VAN and HIRE have been. Hayley Steph thank everyone for yet another fabulous wave of generosity from the kind people of Bourne and the local villages.

Condition your Brain and Move your Life Forward Solution-focused hypnotherapy C
hristine Beardwood is a qualified hypnotherapist, running her own practice in Bourne, specialising in solution-focused clinical hypnotherapy. Christine explained, “This method uses the clinically proven techniques of therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, neuro-linguistic programming, life strategies, and combines them with trance to make important positive changes within a short period of time.” By understanding the implications of stress and anxiety upon your life, she uses her skills as a hypnotherapist to resolve unwelcome habits and thought patterns at a subconscious level. Christine admits that hypnotherapy is sometimes regarded with suspicion. “Contrary to myth, a hypnotherapist can’t take control of your mind and, while in trance, you retain full control at all times, including the ability to accept or reject a suggestion. When in trance you are fully aware of your surroundings and you can’t be made to do anything that you would not consciously do.” Christine offers a free first session to clients, and can help treat a range of problems, from weight loss, sleep disorders and smoking to coping with public speaking or improving business performance. “Hypnosis is a natural, safe and gentle way to treat many conditions, such as emotional, nervous and psychological problems. It’s also a powerful tool for motivation and performing to your best potential either in sports, the arts, business or personal performance. She also treats phobias, addictions, IBS, depression, pain-

relief, tinnitus, personal performance, childbirth and hypnotherapy for children. Neuroscience research tells us that by rehearsing and visualizing your goals, performance is improved. While in trance, our brains have access to the unconscious mind, allowing
thoughts, feelings, images, sensations and behaviour to become highlighted. Trance allows access to certain brain waves associated with creativity; we are able to combine lateral and previously unconnected associations to forge new ideas.”

Spotlight on Schools
Bourne Westfield Nursery
- ‘Little Westys’ - where learning is a journey full of adventure, discovery and fun! When the nursery opened its doors in September 2016, it was an exciting addition to the already outstanding Early Years provision at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy. Our nursery staff are committed to providing a caring and stimulating environment that builds confidence and self-esteem for the twenty-six children who enjoy attending each day. With a play-based, hands-on approach, we foster a love of learning and exploring. Individual children’s needs are met, as we capture their interests and follow their imagination – wherever that may take us. The world is there to discover! Our ‘Little Westys’ learn to think creatively and critically as they explore the world around them. Through playing together, we lay the foundations for reading and writing, stimulate their interest in numbers and shapes, and feed their curiosity of the world in which we live. We help the children in our care become independent and ready for school in our Reception classes, by working as one Early Years unit. We are seeking to develop all the children so that they become confident and enthusiastic learners who can share toys and play imaginatively; talk about their ideas; ask questions about the world around them; be inquisitive and keen to explore. We help the children to discover the wonder of books and stories and make-believe.
If your child would love to: build a rocket outside with our big wooden bricks and then fly it to the moon, and… make a volcano out of sand and red paper, and see what happens when water is poured over it, and… pretend to be a character from ‘Snow Bears’ and make their own toast to get warm and cosy, and… run around on a windy day with ribbons to watch them fly and sail through the sky…. …then we would be delighted for them to join us! Children are able to join our nursery any time after their third birthday. Bourne Westfield Nursery currently offers allday sessions from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Alternatively, children can stay for a morning session, from 8:45am to 11:45am or an afternoon session from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. From September, we will be offering “wrap-around care”, where children can attend from 7.30am to 6.00pm. For more information or to come and see our Nursery, please contact Bourne Westfield Primary Academy on 01778 424152, or send an e-mail to starting@bournewestfield.lincs.sch.uk. We would love to welcome you to the Bourne Westfield family.

My Top Tips for Booking the Perfect Honeymoon You’ve been fantasising about it for months (if not years), you’re buzzing with different ideas and you can’t wait to get started – but where to begin? Although exciting, the high expectations and dizzying array of choices and decisions to make mean that booking your honeymoon can also be stressful and even a little overwhelming at times. However, help is at hand – follow my six useful booking tips to minimise stress and ensure that you round off your wedding in true fairy-tale style, by having the honeymoon you’ve been dreaming of. 1. Decide on names
Before your honeymoon, it’s important to decide whether or not you want to travel under your new married name. In general, it is best to book airline tickets and rooms under the pre-wedding names of both parties, as they will need to match the name on your passport (which you’re unlikely to be able to have changed until a few weeks or months after the wedding.) Whatever you do, stick to your decision once you’ve made it – airlines charge heavily for name changes!
2. Speak to someone with firsthand knowledge Wherever you decide to go in the end,
be certain to talk to someone who has actually been to the destination and to the property you’re intending to stay in – nothing beats first-hand knowledge, and speaking to me can be both enlightening and reassuring!
3. Take all the time you need
If the thought of jetting off on your honeymoon the moment your wedding is over is making you feel rushed, then simply wait awhile! Planning a wedding and a honeymoon at the same time is a lot of pressure – if you feel like it’s too much at once, wait until a few months after the wedding to go away. Not only will you give yourselves more time to plan, but with the wedding out of the way, all honeymoon-related decisions will have your full attention – meaning that they won’t be hasty or panicked!
4. Be on top of your budget
Perhaps the main cause of honeymoonrelated stress is money; however, if you

plan your budget carefully and stay on top of it throughout your booking, it doesn’t have to be. Decide together which parts of your honeymoon you’re happy to splash out more on, and where you could maybe save, and be sure to track what you spend.
5. Decide what you definitely want
If you both have several different destinations in mind, narrowing down your honeymoon options can be the hardest part. Making a list of the top things that you both definitely want from your honeymoon (e.g. spas, wildlife, beaches etc.) can really help to give you some focus (and find a balance if you have a few different ideas!)
6. Tell people it’s your honeymoon
Finally, don’t be shy about letting the world know that you’re on your honeymoon! I will be happy to help find you any special honeymoon deals and discounted rates, valuable extras in the form of complimentary meals, room upgrades and discounted tours and activities - these are always lovely to receive, and just add that extra little “icing on the cake” for you … the most important couple in the world!

“Romance is not dead”, as the saying goes, but it could soon be rather poorly, if you would-be lovers fail to take note of the following… A recent survey conducted by blu.com has revealed the biggest turn-off in a potential partner on a first date is body odour. Over 2000 single people took part in the study and agreed, with almost 75% of respondents adding that it would be enough to make them reject the offer of a second date! Over half (53%) said they form an opinion of someone in less than fifteen minutes and would dump someone who was perfect, apart from one major flaw. On the plus side, the research showed that people valued plenty of wholesome traits, with a sense of humour and good hygiene being more important to people than wealth or fashion sense. Something to think about then before your next date! Here are the top 20 turn-offs:
1 Body odour 2 Bad temper 3 Lying 4 Being selfish 5 Bad breath (cigarettes) 6 Bad breath (unidentified food) 7 No sense of humour 8 Yellow teeth 9 Eats disgustingly 10 Having dirty clothes 11 Being rude to waiters 12 Had nothing in common 13 Dirty fingernails 14 Smoking 15 Smelly feet 16 Talking about exes too much 17 Being sexist 18 Bad fake tan 19 Being jealous 20 Being obsessed with money

Chya - The Newest Barbershop in Town A new barbershop opened in Bourne at the end of November 2016 and, according to Chya, the happy and permanently smiling owner, business has been excellent, with many customers already returning after their first visit to his salon. The shop, located on North Street, between the Red Cross shop and Hoppers the Jewellers, was once a long-established hairdressing salon, bearing (what many of us thought at the time) the exotic name, “Nevil, Art de Coiffure”. Remembering now how that name, to some, was to become “Nevil ’Aircuts”, it will be interesting to see what the equally exotic-sounding, “Chya” might morph into, over time! The salon has been fully re-furbished and appears cosy and friendly, with very modern décor and fittings. The traditional range of services include haircuts and designs, wet shaves, beard trims, wash and blow dry, and face threading. The price list is very competitive,
and a wide range of products, including gel, wax and after-shave is available for sale. Chya is now looking to extend his services on offer, and Laura, a qualified ladies hairstylist, has recently joined the team. Discounts are also available for children and O.A.P.s.

Golf Tip
Do you know what golf score you are capable of already? Hopefully, you will be starting to think how to improve your golf game and what would it take to make 2017 the best ever? I am sure you are already thinking of perhaps improving your swing or putting, being more consistent, or concentrating on a specific technical aspect that you have identified already as being the focus of your personal development. However, have you thought just how good you are already? Be prepared to be blown away. Below is a little exercise that will only take a couple of minutes to complete … and the result will blow you away!
The Exercise
Most of us have a ‘home’ golf club, one that we play most of our golf on. On a piece of paper, list 1 to 18 – one line to represent each of the holes. Now, think back and write down the best score you have ever had on the each of the eighteen holes. Then add up your nine-hole and eighteen-hole totals. Has this surprised you, just how low the score is? This is your best score, or what you are capable of scoring, if you manage to put your best game together in one round. Our aim is to help you improve your golf game towards achieving this score for real, and if you manage to keep updating this score, then you definitely know your golf game is improving, and moving in the right direction. In the following months, we will give you some tips that will help you move towards this dream score. If you would like to receive these tips before then though, please go to our website www.bournegolfcentre.com and learn how you can improve your golf even more.

“Defined Benefit Pension” Transfer Values ‘Shooting Up’ by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd
We are seeing a significant increase in enquiries from people, seeking advice on “Defined Benefit”, (D.B.), also known as “Final Salary” pensions. Great care needs to be taken when looking at these types of pensions, and I ensure that people understand the pros and cons of giving up the guarantees that are inherent in a final salary pension scheme. Six million people with D.B. pensions have seen their transfer values increase in the last year. Under the rules of most D.B. schemes, workers have the right to swap their pension entitlement for a transfer value, to be reinvested in a pension plan in their own name. Some of the values are substantially more than a year ago. For someone with a pension income worth £20,000 at retirement, it is not uncommon to be offered thirty times that amount - in other words, £600,000.
But, while selling the rights to a D.B. pension may be attractive for some people, there can also be significant disadvantages. ‘Pressure off’ After working for thirty years for a credit card company, Peter was made redundant. He found it hard to get another job and found himself living on benefits. As a result, he was advised to sell his D.B. pension. He was originally offered a transfer value of £505,000. A year later, that had jumped by 12%, to £567,000, which he accepted. He re-invested into a drawdown
pension, which currently pays him £25,000 a year. He says, “It has taken so much pressure off my shoulders, and I am a lot happier”, and added, “It has given me my life back; I can’t recommend it enough.” This all sounds fantastic But - Peter is now paying management charges, he is taking a relatively large proportion of his fund as income, and he has lost his guarantees. His pension income is now dependent upon the amount of money which is in his pot; if investment returns are lower than anticipated, he could face having to reduce his income or the very real possibility of the money running out altogether. What is a Defined Benefit pension? Workers with these pensions know exactly how much they will receive in retirement and it is guaranteed. Pension income is based upon the member’s salary and length of service, and usually carries some kind of inflation proofing. Workers with Defined Contribution schemes save into a pension pot, which they then use to buy a retirement income. The size of the pot often depends upon

University Funding
Like many parents, I can personally relate to the cost of a university education, as both of my children are presently studying for a degree. I often have conversations with clients about this and it’s surprising how many people do not know just how much the loan system has changed. The average debt for a graduate is now £44,000 (source: Daily Mail), so it is wise to save as soon as possible. investment market performance which, as we know, can fall as well as rise. The methodology used by actuaries to calculate transfer values relies on them making a number of assumptions as to the member’s pension at normal retirement, then how much capital is required to secure this income, before discounting this to today’s value. Low interest rates filter into these calculations and lead to a higher transfer value. Each type of scheme has its own benefits: Defined Contribution pensions can offer: • A more flexible retirement income. • The possibility of extra tax-free cash. • Easier inheritance, as transferred funds can be passed on to heirs. But keeping a Defined Benefit pension is sensible for many
people, as it offers: • Certainty. Such pensions pay an income for life - often higher than that which would be sustainable over the long- term with a D.C. pot of the same value. • Inflation protection. • Risk-free income, which does not depend on the ups and downs of the stock market. It’s fair to say that, in the majority of cases, you are better off served by staying in the Final Salary Scheme, where the guarantees are very valuable. However, in some cases the potential for flexible income payments can be useful, especially for someone retiring early. This is a very complex area of advice and requires a specialist qualification for the adviser; there are many areas to consider and attention must be given to longterm objectives, not just today’s issues.
Next month, in Discovering Bourne, I will be writing about ISAs, which form a tax-efficient vehicle in order to build up a suitable lump sum. If you have five years or more in which to save, you could consider equity-based plans, which can deliver a good return over the longer term. If a grandparent can afford to make regular gifts to their grandchild, not only can this help towards a grandchild’s living expenses or university fees – they can reduce any potential Inheritance Tax (IHT) liability for the grandparent, and may be used to fund a Junior ISA in the child’s own name which they can access after the age of eighteen. If you would like any further help or information regarding the options available to fund university education, then please call me. Meanwhile, look out for the March issue of your favourite, “priceless”, information-packed Discovering Bourne magazine.

In the Hot Seat
Ken Wainwright
Retired Teacher, Badminton Champion, Model Maker The oft’ quoted words of the recently retired, “I don’t know how I ever found the time to go out to work”, could well apply to this month’s “Hot Seater”, the former Assistant Principal of the Bourne Academy, (or the Robert Manning T.C. as it was then), Mr Ken Wainwright. As a geographer, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Ken’s many overseas travels included him climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, whilst on a scholarship to Africa. A proud graduate from the prestigious Carnegie College in Leeds, it is no wonder that the sporting excellence required for that has remained with him since then. County honours in badminton and athletics, have been augmented by a recent long-service award for Ken’s having completed forty years of badminton coaching at the Deepings Leisure Centre, and he still remains Bourne Badminton Club’s undefeated singles champion! Less energetic pursuits include forty-six years as a registered guitar tutor; a regular soloist for the Stamford Gilbert and Sullivan Society; a member of several local choirs and the “Tinderbox” light entertainment group; and a recent incursion into the world of pantomime with the “Tomorrow’s Dream” group as an ugly sister. Indeed, a very full life, made even more so for him by the Wainwright offspring, James and Elizabeth, presenting grandad with four potential guitar-playing, badminton champions of the future!

Q: Where were you born, and what is your earliest memory of your childhood? A: I’m a Lancashire lad from Darwen, and I can fondly recall going to the seaside at week-ends in the 1950s in our old Ford Prefect. Q: Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? A: Definitely my wife, (an “Old Brunnian” who many will remember, as Margaret Scotney.) She is always up for a challenge … for both of us! Q: Which two characters, (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? A: The designer of Bourne railway station, who could assist me in my model-making details. I have a huge and compelling ambition to build a model (1:76) of the former Bourne railway station and complex. This is a five year project, and I have already created the Red Hall, the engine sheds and parts of the station. (However, as a huge room,

at least thirty feet by twenty feet, would be needed to display the final working model, any offers would be gratefully received!) * Michael Palin, so that my experiences as a geographer and traveller, could be discussed alongside his. Q: How would you describe yourself in just five words? A: “House-trained, almost naturalised Brunnian.” Q: If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why? A: To ensure that the town expands, but only at a rate which the public services could fully support. Q: What advice would you give to a 16 year old you? A: Don’t waste time watching television or playing computer games. Get out there and do something positive and useful.

Taking a tip from the Hotel Industry - by interior designer Yasmin Chopin
S
pending two days with hoteliers at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Stansted, for the Hotel Designs Summit, gave me a unique insight into the hotel industry. I was invited by the hotel industry to speak on the subject of blogging, which was well received and generated much discussion and enquiry. We talked about design, interiors and customer service and how these things add up to make a guest feel very special. There are some design tips below…!
Whatever your reason for staying in a hotel, your basic needs will be met by “The Three Bs”. Tim Mills, a partner of the awardwinning Edgar House Hotel in Chester, explained that, once you’ve conquered the three Bs, you can go very much further to achieving a customer experience par excellence. The Three Bs Bed - ensuring you have the best night’s sleep in a comfortable bed using quality bedding.
So what can we pick up from this? Here are three ideas for your home:
and uneven could be characterful and interesting - think • Wonky about it before straightening and levelling. • Is your ceiling boring? Get creative with colour and/or pattern. you make more of a good view by raising your viewing • Can position or enlarging a window? 'Brassica Study’ Farrow & Ball.
Bath - providing a bath and/or shower that not only works properly, but gives you a sense of luxury. Breakfast - preparing a breakfast that is appetising, tastes great and uses the best ingredients. Using interior design tricks of the trade, Tim has decorated the seven rooms in his boutique hotel to generate a ‘wow’ from his guests. It sounds like a fun place to stay and explore. He said, One room has a wonky mantelpiece in it - it was wonky when we bought it but we made it even more wonky. Another room has a colourful ceiling, and the rooms on the river side of the property have their beds raised by a metre, so that guests can enjoy the views whilst eating breakfast in bed!” Having got the interiors sorted, it then comes down to the staff and service. Reaching out to make that very special connection with his guests, he provides a parking place with their name on; then he or his partner personally welcomes them with a glass of bubbly. He finds out if they have any special food or beverage ‘likes’ and goes all the way to ensuring that those items are in stock. And at the end of their stay, each guest receives a goodie bag to go home with! We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘going the extra mile’... well in Tim’s case it seems very appropriate and I am not surprised that the Edgar House Hotel is number one out of twenty-five hotels listed as ‘The Best Small Hotels in the World’ by Trip Advisor – a well-deserved accolade! Contact Yasmin Chopin on 07831 231 664, or email her ycid@yasminchopin.com. See more on her website: yasminchopin.com. Yasmin helps you create a new layout or decor scheme that reflects your personality and your lifestyle. She offers a two hour home visit which gives you a chance to ask all your questions and by chatting though your ideas you’ll come up with a plan.

F
ebruary is a strange month! It could be the coldest month but still have warm days and when it is cold, freezing or very wet it doesn’t quite seem right to start planting seeds. However, there are plenty that you can be starting off indoors and out. It is possible to sow crops such as broad beans along with early peas (under cloches), parsnips and garlic, but only do so if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with goodquality seed compost and sow the seeds about two inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Once the seedlings have grown to about three inches, make a shallow drill and slide the contents of the guttering into the drill. Make sure they are firmly bedded and water them. Also shallots can be planted; dig shallow drills about seven inches apart so that the tips are just showing, water and keep weed-free. Other crops that can be sown outdoors (watch the weather and make a judgement) are turnips, rhubarb crowns and grape vines. Seeds that can be planted indoors or under cover include broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage, sprouting broccoli – to name but a few.
Make sure that you have got all of your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. The soil can be prepared for the spring planting by completing the winter digging, if not already done, by removing any weeds that have survived the winter months. To warm up the soil for planting next month, cover it with fleece or polythene and, if you haven’t already, add wellrotted manure or compost to the prepared soil. Other jobs that can be carried out are:Removing dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts –if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew. Make sure that winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. Spray fruit trees, whilst they are still dormant, with a plant-oil based winter wash to help prevent aphids and scale insects. Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes.
Happy gardening!
It really is the last time you can winter prune fruit trees as

“Flat-Pack Future” for the Housing Market? by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell
We’ve made it this far; some of us may have even recovered from our post-New Year hangovers, so congratulations! Spring is closing in and soon, the joy of evenings staying lighter longer and rising temperatures will be tangible things to grasp onto. “So, what is the property market doing?” I hear you ask. It’s doing well, although stock levels are still rather low. We’ve done well, maintaining our top-spot in the town and have helped many vendors to move. As a country, we managed to build more homes across 2016 than in 2015. We still didn’t quite hit the magic number, but we’re getting closer, which can only help. The UK’s Housing Minister, Sajid Javid, travelled to Germany to review their fantastic tradition of flat-pack homes (or “prefabs”, as we have called them in the past). Forget the fusty, emergency homes of the postwar era housing crisis. These new
generation pre-fabs are seriously funky and precision built, which could revolutionise the way we build in the UK. It is just what the UK housing sector needs to satisfy the huge demand for home ownership. Developments could take months instead of years and, with cutting-edge designs being the norm, could create some very exciting homes. To see some German cutting-edge, flat-pack homes, go to www.huf-haus.com and you’ll see what I mean. Will they have an impact on the regular market? Perhaps, but the likelihood is that they will help to stabilise prices. In theory, an increased supply of new homes
should cause a cooling in asking prices, but I suspect that we will simply treat them as a “value brand” of property, and that regular construction will maintain or perhaps even gain a “premium brand” bump. They will certainly create job opportunities, and new business ventures will emerge, so I’m on board. Before we all sell-up and move into the “Flat Pack Future”, you’ll need an agent with an unbeatable track-record for sales. Call us and we’ll get you moved. Remember, right now demand is high and supply is low, so it’s a great time to sell.

The Technology Site
A 2017 Hacker update by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC
Online IT security threats will continue to grow significantly in 2017, as hacking and scamming sources increase their investment in technology and in training criminals and cyber-terrorists. So who are these hackers? Hackers with hats Articles on Internet security often refer to hackers by a ‘hat’ colour; • White Hat: The good guys – ‘ethical’ hackers who focus their efforts on trying to break security systems to improve them. • Black hat: The bad guys, intent on violating system security for malicious reasons or personal gain • Grey Hat: A mixture of these two. These hackers will try to illegally break system security but not necessarily for personal gain. However, they often contact the target of the breech and offer to ‘fix’ the problem for a fee. Some even publish details of their successful hacks. The BIG boys Billions of pounds are lost every year to hackers and scammers. Not surprisingly this has attracted the interest of much larger groups. • Hacktivists: This group include cyber-terrorists, an area of particular concern to the modern world. They target systems for purposes of furthering religious, political or ideological beliefs and ideas. • Organised Crime: International crime gangs that share information and invest heavily in their own IT systems and hacking tools and skills. • Governments: The threat of the above groups, plus the chance of carrying out their own cyber-espionage, has forced heavy funding in cyber-warfare and prevention by all governments. The “Internet of Things” This is a term that came into being due to the number of devices that now connect to the Internet, other than the usual PCs, tablets and Smartphones. It includes ‘Smart’ devices such as TVs, set top boxes (e.g. Freeview), printers, fridges, heating systems, light bulbs, electricity meters etc. More and more of our everyday devices are beginning to have integral Internet connectivity. Many of these devices do not allow for regular security updates, so they can be more readily exploited by the hackers. What should I do about it? For many of the modern day threats we are in the hands of our service providers for protection. However, at an individual level, we should ensure that we install and maintain Internet Security software, and be cautious when using e-mails and visiting new web sites. I would also recommend at least two sets of backups. The first is on a regular basis to a connected device, such as a disk drive or cloud (Internet), back up option; the second to a device, such as an external disk, that can be disconnected from the system after the backup. This latter tip is due to a new wave of ransomware virus that searches for all data including any connected backup device and any active cloud (Internet) backup. Ransomware attempts to extort money from the target by encrypting any data found and demanding payment to provide a code to allow decryption.

A little bit of History
by Rex Needle
Discovering. . . The corn trade
Corn has been grown in the Bourne area since Roman times and as the population increased, it became a valuable crop for local farmers for home consumption and for sale elsewhere. In centuries past, improvements were made to the Bourne Eau to make it navigable and facilitate easier transportation with the result that warehouses sprang up to cater for the movement of grain in bulk. From the period 1500-1640, Bourne was one of 37 market towns in Lincolnshire where the main commodity was corn and successive legislation to improve the drainage of the fens and the subsequent reclamation of land assisted this prosperity. These factors led to a boom in trade with the Midlands and Yorkshire and boats left laden with corn and returned with coal and other vital commodities for the local economy. As a result, grain became a vital part of the local economy and on one occasion was even the cause of rioting. In 1740, a gang of angry townspeople tried to prevent a consignment from being sent by barge along the Bourne Eau on its way to Spalding. This was a year of rising prices and a scarcity of food and they resented corn grown locally being sent to feed people in other 48

parts of the country when they themselves were hungry. One chronicler recorded: “We have had a disturbance by the mob which cut some sacks of wheat in the boat and obstructed its passage to Spalding for a time but was quelled by officers of the town and five women were committed to the House of Correction.” The flourishing corn trade spawned the construction of grain warehouses around the town and although many of these distinctive red brick buildings have disappeared others survive after being adapted for modern commercial purposes. Among them is Wherry’s warehouse in South Street which dates from the late 18th century and continued in business for almost 200 years. It is now Grade II listed and converted into retirement flats although the restored façade is a reminder of its past use. Another on the banks of the Bourne Eau in Eastgate has been used for various commercial purposes in recent years while the early 19th century four-storey grain warehouse overlooking the car park in Burghley Street has also been preserved, having been bought by South Kesteven District Council for £350,000 in 2008 and now converted into private flats as part of the Wherry’s Lane redevelopment scheme. According to a recent survey, which details the ten biggest issues preventing sellers from getting the asking price when selling their homes, bad smells top the list for homebuyers. “Inspired Wallpaper” asked 1,500 people what the most likely issues are that would put them off buying a house when viewing a property, and 36% said this was the biggest reason. lorraine_setinstone@hotmail.com
Behind unpleasant smells on the list were bad layouts and D.I.Y. disasters, with outdated fixtures and fittings and clutter close behind. In addition, 13% named garish décor as their biggest turn-off. In seventh position on the list is mould, followed by lack of character and a disappointing garden.

The research highlights just how important it is to present your home without these irritations, because they could result in lower bids for the property and possibly cost the homeowner a sale.

Nubourne W.I.
- Friendly, Active and Welcoming Nubourne Women’s Institute, (W.I.) was formed in 1972 and has continued to grow and develop, just as the times, (and indeed our lovely town), have changed over the last forty-four years. We are a friendly, welcoming group of over fifty members who meet at the Bourne Abbey Church Hall at 7.30pm on the first Thursday of every month (except January). Our programme is very varied and is designed to cover a huge range of existing interests, as well as introducing new ones to our members. At most of our meetings, we welcome a guest speaker and, during the past year, these have included a Wimbledon tennis umpire, a local historian, a jeweller, a B.R.M. enthusiast and a make-up demonstrator. On other occasions, we have held a fashion show, tried line-dancing and held a Beetle Drive. Every month, there is a competition to enter, and the evening may also include a fun quiz or game and, of course, tasty refreshments, (for which the W.I. over the years, has become justifiably renowned!) We have arranged a number of local outings for this year, notably to the Stamford Shakespeare Company at Tolethorpe, to see “The Wind in the Willows”; to Deepings Lake Nature Reserve; and a boat trip on Rutland Water. Some of our members have visited a Mosque and a Buddhist Centre and have joined other local WIs to travel further afield,

on day-trips to The Houses of Parliament, “The Deep” at Hull, Woburn Abbey, Bletchley Park and Bury St Edmunds. Our Lunch Club meets regularly and is always well-attended. As well as being an enjoyable social occasion, this also gives us the opportunity to sample the delights of a number of local hostelries. The Walking Group meet most months and enjoy the fresh air and exercise, whilst discovering new and interesting parts of the locality. Earlier this year, the Craft Group worked together to make blankets for Peterborough Hospital Maternity Unit and a Bourne care home. As you can see, we provide opportunities for those wanting to be busy and active, and also for those who just want to come along to the monthly meetings, enjoy meeting up with friends, having a chat and being entertained. If you would like to come along as a visitor and give the WI a try, you will always receive a warm welcome at our meetings. You can contact us through our Secretary – Mary Hitchcock 01778 420370.

Pets and Vets
FOR THE LOVE OF OUR PETS
The human animal bond has probably always been present, initially for hunting, transport and guarding. In modern times, animals have effectively become family members, with mutual close relationships. In America, surveys suggest that between 60% and 80% of dogs sleep on, or in, their owner’s bed! It is known that owning pets has great health benefits, reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and stress. Riding horses gives improvements to people with neurological damage and for those with handicaps. We have guide dogs, hearing dogs, riding for the disabled, and pat dogs .We have much-loved cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, reptiles and birds. They live in our homes and are generally constant in their affections to us. Their friendship is usually much less complicated than with other humans. Our pets improve our lives and we want them to be healthy and long-lived. There are numerous stories of animals saving their owners: dogs and cats warning their owners about carbon monoxide or fire; dogs rescuing people who are drowning; dogs detecting malignant skin and lung cancers; horses moving their owners away from danger; and even a pot-bellied pig who laid in the middle of the road until somebody came to help her owner, who had suffered a heart attack.
member. I have witnessed this grief many times. I have had people collapse onto the ground into a foetal position, their grief has been so great. I still remember what I felt when I was a young boy and Whisky, my poodle, had to be put to sleep after breaking his back in a road traffic accident, and also the grief my son felt when his cat was run over. It is very important then that we, as vets, understand this bond. We need to help our pets recover from illness and surgery by allowing owners to visit them. We need to let owners be present when their animal is sedated, prior to surgery. We need to be aware that we are responsible for every animal – they are an important part of somebody’s family.
This relationship works both ways of course. Our love for our pets is greatly beneficial to them as well. We improve their health, both by our physical care for them and the emotional care we provide. Studies have shown that animals recovering from painful surgery feel less pain when their owners are present, as well as being less stressed. There have also been many cases of humans risking, and sometimes losing, their lives trying to save their pets. It is not surprising then that, when our pet dies, we suffer a level of grief similar to losing a close family

Mayor
Words from the Mayor Councillor Colin Pattison
The customary build-up and then the mayhem surrounding Christmas already seem a distant memory! My wife, Fiona, and I finished our engagements for 2016 by helping to serve Christmas Day dinner to the residents at the Cedars Care Home. A thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding couple of hours, made more so by some delightful characters! Thank you to all the staff and residents who we met. January was a quiet time for Civic duties, giving us time to take stock; sort out our home and garden a little; and for me to continue to seek full-time employment. Fingers crossed that something turns up soon! Invitations to forthcoming Civic events are starting to roll in, so it’s “suits pressed and shoes polished, ready for action” time, once more. We always look forward to these events
Council News Early drafts of the 2017 budget are being meticulously looked at, “line by line”, by our Finance and General Purpose Committee’s Working Party. Also, the “local precept” needs to be finalised, ready to be part of the Community Charge from SKDC in the coming months. At this stage, we “may” have to be looking at some small increase. We are currently looking at initiatives and possibilities of working with “partners” in the town, for example the grass cutting of the roadside service strips. No-one wants to see areas become “scruffy”, but even simple grasscutting comes at a “cost”, and we are still trying to establish exactly what, and when, L.C.C. and S.K.D.C. will be cutting for us? The Town Council has purchased ten new litter bins, along with five yellow salt/grit boxes, which will soon be installed. We should also see our “Speed Indication Device” being put into operation. Hopefully, members of the public will appreciate that the Town Council is trying to be proactive, and that we are trying to improve things, a little bit at a time! F e brua ry 2017
with great enthusiasm, a chance to catch up with acquaintances we have made, and the opportunity to proudly “sing the praises” of our wonderful little town, which has so much to offer, residents and visitors alike. Regarding fundraising, we hope to hold a couple of general knowledge quizzes in early March and April, along with an “End of Term Tea Party” in May. Watch this space and look out for posters advertising these events. All proceeds will go to my chosen charities - the Butterfield Centre, the Carers Sitters Service and The Willoughby School. Be good, be safe and see you all next month.

Beware of ICE! by Tom Ingram
W
ith the colder temperatures comes the potential for riding or driving on an icy surface. The main roads are treated quite reliably, but it is the rural roads where we all need to take more care. A flow of water, even if a trickle, across a road can be lethal, and there are certain locations where standing water is commonplace. Other causes for ice patches include where the sun cannot reach, for example near large buildings or trees, and also cross winds from elevated or exposed roads. Half the problem with ice is not being able to spot it. Sticking to the main roads is one suggestion I offer to my pupils. The other is to make sure that you allow more time for the journey. It is not possible to safely travel the exact same journeys in the exact same time period, with differing road conditions. Rubbing off some speed to account for adverse weather will
help the driver and the car to adapt appropriately. When traction between tyre and road surface is compromised, ideally, the best bet is to not even travel, but if you do find yourself in this circumstance, the aim is to maximise the potential for grip by delicate application of brakes, gas and steering. Create bigger gaps between vehicles, so as to allow any action that has to be taken to be less intense. Lastly, spare a thought for the elderly getting about in the winter. Although they may have a vehicle, it is possible that they might need some assistance with general maintenance regarding tyres and fluid levels. Alternatively, they may not feel confident driving when it is really cold, and a helping hand to fetch provisions may be gratefully received, even if not actually requested. Take care in these driving conditions.

Police Patrol
Sergeant Mosley’s Musings: Robbery – (What’s that all about then?)
Last month I wrote about the basic offence of theft, adding that I would go onto consider other offences under the Theft Act 1968. This month, I want to discuss robbery, which is, thankfully, an extremely rare offence in our area. Section 8 of the Theft Act states: 8(1) A person is guilty of robbery if he steals, and immediately before or at the time of doing so, and in order to do so, he uses force on any person or puts or seeks to put any person in fear of being then and there subjected to force. Robbery is an aggravated form of theft and, therefore, a theft has to be proved. If no theft is present, there is no robbery but there may be an assault. The aggravating factor is the use, or threats of force which is used in order to commit the offence. There has to be a direct link between the use of force and the theft and is used to enable the theft to take place. For example, if a criminal was to lift a purse out of a handbag without the victim knowing, they have committed a theft. If, however, the criminal was to grab the handbag and, at the same time, push the victim over, and then run off with the
handbag, they have committed a robbery. The use of force or causing/seeking to cause fear must be to enable the theft (stealing) to take place. If, at the end of an assault, the offender, as an afterthought, decides to take the victim’s wallet, that is not robbery, it is assault and theft. It is not necessary to prove that any person was actually put in fear of force being used. The offender only needs to seek to put someone in fear, and so the state of mind of the offender is the key element. If an offender says to the victim, “Give me your phone or I will punch you”, and the victim hands over the phone, you have a robbery. For advice on personal safety and other crime reduction tips, have a look at www.lincs.police. uk/get-help-advice Register all your valuables, for free, at www. immobilise.com To report a crime, call 101 or 999, if in progress.
