Introduction

Welcome to Your April Issue.

Easter- the only time of the year when it’s perfectly safe to put all your eggs in one basket! And talking of Easter eggs, this month why not take a stroll around the shops in Bourne and seek out the Easter Bunnies, and try your hand in our competition. A “chocolate explosion” may not eggsactly be what you’re after but it’s not a bad alternative, I’m sure you’ll agree! Big congratulations this month go to Matt at Crown Jewellers and the North Shoes “family”, who just love to scoop awards at every opportunity. Enjoy your Easter break and go steady on the chocolate!

Finally, as yet another legendary musical hero shuffles off to the great gig in the sky, I’m reminded of an incident from my youth. As an overripe blackberry splattered on my friend’s forehead, my cry went out, “Guess who I am? … Chuck Berry!” His reply just had to be, “Oh, Johnny, be good!” Enjoy the read.

Multi-award Winner Matt is Bourne’s Crowning Glory! “It’s still not really sunk in, yet”, muses the multiaward winning Matt Powell, as he outlines the enormity of his recent successes at the “Jewellery Oscars” in London. “It was surreal at times, with people from the likes of Cartier actually asking me just how I had managed to create the platinum dragon-fly, which was my winning piece.” Matt and his parents, Cathy and Russ, are Directors of Crown Jewellers on North Street in Bourne, and it is barely seven years since Matt started his training as a goldsmith. All the more remarkable therefore, that he should be gaining so many accolades, when competing against literally hundreds of entrants, (over 550), across 24 different categories, at February’s Awards Ceremony at London’s Goldsmiths’ Hall. “These people are amongst the best in the profession, and lots have been returning every year to compete for the awards,” he explains, “and then this young guy from Bourne rocks up and … well I just can’t believe it’s happened!”

What in fact has occurred is that, in the “Craft” section of the annual Goldsmiths’ Company Craft and Design Council Awards, Matt won a gold award in the “Jewellers Category” and a second gold in the “Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers Category”. To add the finishing touch, he also collected two bronze awards in the “Design” section, namely the “Technical Innovation Award” and the “Precious Jewellery 3-D Design Award”. The extraordinary winning piece, the platinum dragon-fly, so much admired by the Cartier representative, amongst many others, was in fact an accumulation of minute strips of platinum, each welded to the next, to create the beautifully delicate finished piece. Other top names present at the event, and being impressed with Matt’s expertise, included Boodles, and top jewellery designer, Stephen Webster. This indeed was “local hero” mixing it with the very best, at the top table. Matt is optimistic that his achievements will serve to increase the reputation of not just his own work, but also that of Crown Jewellers, on a much wider stage than before. Crown Jewellers can offer not just a wide range of jewellery for sale but, with a resident goldsmith of some renown now on-site, they can manufacture bespoke items, besides restoring and repairing others. “Hopefully, my awards can help put Bourne on the map. You don’t necessarily have to travel to London or Birmingham for that something really special”, he concludes.

Awards are a “Shoe-in” for Family Firm! A Bourne-based family shoe firm has walked off with its sixth national award in just six years. North Shoes, who have traded from North Street since 1876, are celebrating after being named “Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year” at the prestigious Footwear Industry Awards 2017. Furthermore, Store Manager, Ryan Clements made it a golden double, when named “Society of Shoe Fitters (SSF) Student of the Year”. It’s the third time North Shoes have won the “Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year” accolade, and delighted Managing Director, James North (the fifth generation at the helm of the business), said, “It’s an honour to win this award three years in a row, and it shows just how much such dedication to offering a quality fitting service can bring to your business. “I’m really chuffed for Ryan - he’s put hours of hard work into his SSF course. He’s a credit to the company and the North Shoes family.” Ryan, who has only been managing the Bourne store for a year, said: “I feel incredibly proud. The SSF had their biggest intake of students this year and there were literally hundreds who could have been up for the award. Thanks to my family, friends and James and the team at North Shoes who have been fantastic and really supportive.” North Shoes, who have stores in Peterborough, Stamford and Cambridge, were also shortlisted in the “Ladies’ Independent Retailer” and “Independent Family Retailer” categories, whilst Cambridge Branch Manager, Paul Luesby, was shortlisted in the “Personality of the Year” section. This year’s awards were presented at a Gala Night at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham.

Chocolate- Advice on Your Best Friend from Renu by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

I

f you crave chocolate, it doesn’t mean your body has a chocolate deficiency, although I think most people would prefer that!

Any cravings are an indication that you are not eating the correct things for your body’s needs. Chocolate is high in magnesium, and craving it often indicates that your body is deficient in that element. Magnesium is found in foods such as leafy greens, figs, avocados and nuts so, whilst chocolate does contain magnesium, by eating more of these other foods, you can help suppress your cravings. Since experts estimate that at least 80% of us are deficient in magnesium, it is important to find ways to increase magnesium levels in the body, but, unfortunately, chocolate may not be a great way to do this.

affects the brain. Chocolate increases serotonin in the brain, a neurotransmitter responsible for better mood, sleep, and the reduction of anxiety. Women have a natural decrease in serotonin in the brain in the week before menstruation, so this may partially explain the specific craving for chocolate during this time. A shot of a tablespoon of cocoa, diluted in water with a little honey, will help increase serotonin quickly and squash these cravings! The basic fact that chocolate tastes good and we enjoy eating it means that the body releases dopamine during chocolate consumption. This means that it is associated with a “feel good factor” which keeps us returning for more.

Statistically, women tend to desire chocolate much more than men, but men tend to favour cravings for foods like red meat (B12, protein) and beer (b-vitamins and yeasts).

If you are continually craving chocolate, then it is time to have a look at your diet to incorporate the right foods to help suppress your cravings. If you would like advice on how you can assess your dietary needs, please contact one of our gym team who will be happy to help you.

Perhaps the most likely reason that we crave chocolate and enjoy eating it so much is the way chocolate

Remember – a “balanced diet” doesn’t necessarily mean “a chocolate in each hand”!

STOP SMOKING Imagine how healthy you would feel if you stop smoking

H

ypnotherapy has the reputation for being the best way to quit smoking available, this is acknowledged by the British Medical Association. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help someone who is determined to quit smoking for good. Even a small habit of smoking a few cigarettes a day can have a big effect on both finances and health. Smoking really is a dying habit and The Beardwood Practice’s one off session, which lasts a couple of hours, can really cement permanent change whereby, with willpower, the client can leave The Beardwood Practice and simply not smoke again.

Quitting smoking by working with a fully qualified and insured Solution Focused Hypnotherapy practitioner is the easy way to stop smoking as we work with a client to fully explain the psychology behind the habit and how we can stop smoking for good. The stop smoking hypnotherapy session works with the practitioner explaining why the brain fools us into thinking it is acceptable to smoke. The hypnosis part of the stop smoking treatment is a key stage to cementing the change during which the client experiences around 45 minutes of hypnosis. During the hypnosis process the subconscious mind effectively “rewires” itself to help the person’s willpower and commitment to smoking cessation.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can also be used to help to take control over other aspects of our lives, ranging from stress/anxiety management, panic attacks, insomnia, addictions, depression, phobias, OCD, PTSD, tinnitus, children, childbirth, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, through to eating and even improving our confidence. Hypnosis is entirely natural, safe and relaxing, you remain conscious and in complete control. It’s a great time to sit down with a Solution Focused Hypnotherapy practitioner to see how you can get the best out of your life and what steps you can take, over a period of time, to realise your full potential. All client data is kept strictly confidential. If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about how to quit smoking for good contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or email.

Don’t Let Pain Hold you Back by Ian Jenkinson M.Ost.

D

o you feel you can no longer do what you would like to do because your body just won’t let you? Perhaps you have that sinking sensation of being old before your time? If so, please don’t give up on the prospect of a great future, free from pain.

We’re taught many wonderful things in school and throughout our life. But it seems we’re rarely taught to understand how our bodies function, and when we could benefit from a helping hand. If you’ve experienced repeated episodes of pain (for example in your back, neck or knees), or can no longer do the things you used to do easily without your body letting you down, then rather than just ignoring this, or taking medication to mask the issue, it could be time to seek help. At the Wellhead Practice, and in my previous work with NHS patients, I’ve helped many people “get their life back”. They’ve been able to start doing the things they love again – simple things such as walking without pain, gardening, playing golf or just being able to pick up their children or grandchildren. Focus on the root cause(s) Many people I see have had some sort of manual therapy in the past, with mixed results. However, I’ve found that the focus has tended to be on a quick fix, meaning that the pain often returns,

again and again. So often it’s the symptoms that are treated rather than the true, underlying cause. The real benefit comes in identifying why symptoms have occurred. Often, this comes down to understanding the interactions in the body and how an issue in one area can result in pain somewhere else. But we also need to consider lifestyle habits and the pressures that the body has been under. Why I am the person to help you In clinic, I specialise in getting people better for the rest of their life – not concentrating on short-term, “sticking plaster” solutions. This is where my passion and expertise lie. I can work together with you to help you understand how your own body functions and get you feeling like your old self again. To get you on the road to lasting change, why not take the first step by giving us a call? Ian Jenkinson is one of the osteopaths at the Wellhead Practice.

Golf Tip

Trouble with the Short Putts? with Darren Game MAY

As the season rapidly approaches and those winter “gimmies” become “must-hole” putts, fear can often set in, leading to poor strokes.

SANDOWN & THE ISLE OF WIGHT Friday 5 May 5 Days HB from £369 A TASTE OF PROVENCE & THE CAMARGUE Saturday 6 May 8 Days HB from £799

Follow our straightforward training drill and never worry about another short putt again.

Through our observations, most putts are missed because the takeaway or back-swing is too long, resulting in a deceleration through impact. The resulting stroke is such that the golf ball does not roll correctly and lacks speed. Therefore, the ball does not hold its line and it drifts past the edge of the hole. All the great putters on the tour ensure that they accelerate the putter through impact. At the recent Honda Classic in America, Rickie Fowler did not miss a putt from inside seven feet from the hole. Is it any wonder that he won the tournament? Here is a drill that will work for you.

JERSEY - BY AIR Saturday 17 June 6 Days HB from £619 ROMANTIC RAILWAY JOURNEYS OF SCOTLAND Monday 19 June 5 Days HB from £499 TWO DAY GETAWAY - OXFORD & A HORSE DRAWN CRUISE ON THE KENNET/AVON CANAL Sunday 25 June 2 Days HB from £109

Go to the practice green and place a ball about three feet from the hole. Pushing the ball, of course, is not allowed in the real game, but that is just what you are going to do! Set up as normal and then simply just push the ball into the hole with the putter. In doing this, you are having to simulate acceleration through impact due to the static start in this exercise. When you are comfortable with this motion, place another ball or tee peg a couple of inches behind the golf ball you are going to hit. This will act as a stopper. Now go ahead and make the putt. Ensure that you do this without hitting the stopper and using your new found acceleration through impact. It is also a good idea to hold the finish position which will confirm in your mind the whole stroke process, including the acceleration through impact. I hope this helps your putting and you hole more of those short putts, especially when it matters.

Senior practice nights are on a Tuesday, and if you are interested in playing, please contact the Club Captain, Pete Morgan, on pngmorgan@gmail.com in the first instance. Any successful club will be able to point to a strong junior section, and Bourne C.C. are proud to be able to do so, with teams at Under 9, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 19 levels, with regular practice and training sessions for all players (boys and girls) through to the end of July. Please contact Hedley Stroud (hedley.stroud@ btinternet.com) if you are interested, but don’t leave it too late, as the action begins soon after the Easter break, early this month.

Bourne C.C. are always looking for more volunteers to assist, in and around this friendly club, and are particularly looking for scorers at the weekends and assistants to help the groundsman during the week. If you have spare time, and want to become involved in the club, then it would be great to hear from you. There is also a thriving social element to the club, which culminates in July with the highly enjoyable Cricket Week, with matches every day, and the hosting of the popular 6 a-side tournament in the evenings - this year the week starts on Monday, July 24th. Information updates can be found on Twitter (@BourneCC) or on the web site (www.bourne.play-cricket.com). Please contact Hedley Stroud (hedley.stroud@btinternet.com) for any more information.

Skydiving for Charity – Here’s How You Can Help Saturday August 5th 2017 is already pencilled into the diaries of three daring local ladies. No, it’s not a wedding, nor a dayout at a health spa, not even a birthday party. Instead, Bourne residents Claire Tupholme and Rebecca Sale, along with Sarah Machin from Deeping St James, will leap out of an aircraft at Hinton, Northamptonshire … and their tandem skydive will hopefully raise thousands of pounds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

challenge, here is the link to her fund-raising page www.justgiving. com/fundraising/Claire-Tupholme

Motor neurone disease is a rare condition that affects around two in every 100,000 people in the U.K. each year, and there are about 5,000 people living with the condition in the UK at any one time. Claire’s best friend, Charlie Fletcher from Peterborough, just happens to be one of this number and Claire has made a promise to her that she would do the skydive to raise essential funds.

If you require any further information, and particularly if you are willing to offer support in the way of raffle prizes etc, please contact Claire on 01778 391175 or e-mail clairetupholme@gmail.com.

Sarah Machin explains their plans, “We are really keen to raise as much money as possible from our fundraising events (which will also include a raffle which, hopefully, local businesses will support, by donating prizes, and an evening quiz night).” Sarah’s contact is www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ SarahMachin84

Bourne Bridge Club - (where agreeable partners can disagree!) Bourne Bridge Club already has a membership of a hundred people, but is keen to welcome new members to its base in the Masonic Centre on Roman Bank, just off Cherry Holt Road in Bourne. Novice/ “gentle duplicate” bridge sessions are held on Tuesday evenings from 6.45pm - 10pm. These sessions are designed to give new players the opportunity to practise their skills in a friendly, unpressurised environment. More experienced players will be on hand if advice is needed, and there is a mid-evening break for 22

refreshments. On Thursdays, there is the regular club evening, again from 6.45pm until 10pm. The Club recently held their first weekend event, when over forty players, (including some from the Deeping and Stamford Bridge Clubs), ventured to the exotic hot-spot that is Skegness, where they “braced themselves” for “a fun weekend, with some bridge being played!” The group stayed at the familyowned Savoy Hotel, a venue that proved to be excellent, adding much to the overall enjoyment. The weekend lived up to, and exceeded

Bourne

all expectations, with sessions of bridge, a quiz and scrabble being organised by Sandra Webb and other enthusiastic members. In addition, the free time was taken up with ten-pin bowling, crazy golf and walking - there really was something for everyone. If you play bridge and would like to get involved, you’d be made most welcome. Please come along, or give Alison a call on 07443 509418 or Sue on 07857 468732. Alternatively, e-mail bourne4bridge@gmail. com for more details. (Who knows where the next “B.B.C. Weekend Away” may take you?). A p r il 2 0 1 7

Perkins Great Eastern Run – Sunday October 8th 2017 – Time to Sign Up! This year’s event is promising to be the biggest ever, with more than 1,600 people already preregistered for the race, which takes place around the streets of Peterborough. Last year saw the highest turnout of runners in its history for this Peterborough City Council-organised race. A total of 4,262 runners ran the half marathon and 1,257 people took part in the Anna’s Hope 5km Fun Run. The event had the strongestever representation from elite runners. One of the fastest UK half marathons, runners came from all over the country and, indeed, the world, with entries from the USA, the Netherlands, Italy and France. The wheelchair race had six entrants. The Perkins Great Eastern Run is famed for its fast, flat course that gives runners an excellent chance

The Bull at Rippingale - Back at the Centre of Village Life It is sad to have witnessed the demise of so many public houses, in both towns and villages, in recent years, so it was with much delight to hear that The Bull in Rippingale, which had long been under serious threat of closure, was to be reprieved. Since November 2016, when a very ambitious local couple, John and Louise Smith, took over the management of The Bull, the residents of this picturesque village, just north of Bourne, along with increasing numbers of visitors, have been able to avail themselves of the hospitality now on offer. The ingredients of what a good village “local” should contain are well represented here and, in John’s opinion, “a warm and friendly atmosphere with a real focus on being a proper village pub” is high on that list. He explains that The Bull is now back at the heart of village life, being used as a base by several local groups and organisations, including darts and pool teams, a photographic society and other local organisations.

There was a call put out for some form of musical entertainment at the week-end, so John obliged by creating a monthly Saturday Night Live session, which has proved an astonishing success so far. High quality real ales on tap include Abbot Ale, Black Sheep and Doom Bar, with other guest ales in support, alongside fine wines and a good range of spirits and soft drinks. Freshly cooked food at very affordable prices is available, and John can look ahead with confidence, now with a growing team in the kitchen. John recently welcomed a new second chef to the team. It’s a locally-sourced menu, wherever possible, with “something for everyone” on offer. The Sunday Carvery has soon become a very sound reason why so many people should pay The Bull a visit, hugely popular with both villagers and visitors alike. A two-course feast for £12, with vegetarian options, is proving irresistible for many, but make sure you book early! Accommodation within five en-suite rooms, adjacent to the pub, is a further attraction, and The Bull’s reputation is likely to be enhanced even more with this facility. Early signs are most encouraging, with some glowing reviews. John’s desire to firmly locate his pub at the very heart of Rippingale is further shown as he talks about the possibility of one day soon having a country store type shop as part of the premises. Locals will tell you that the pub already acts as the village post office, on parts of four days a week, so I wouldn’t bet against it!

Spotlight on The Algarve

– Sun, Sea, Sand and … Sardines!

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

This popular part of Portugal is blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year, turquoise seas and golden sands, on approximately 180 beaches! From golf to bird-watching, from lazing on golden beaches to eating some delicious food, there are so many things to add to your to-do list!

Forty of Portugal’s seventy golf clubs are in this region; some are world-class courses and others exclusive golf resorts, including the exceptional Vale do Lobo near Loulé. The Oceanico golf complex at Vilamoura is one of the best, with four fabulous courses: Old, Victoria, Laguna and Pinhal. The Ria Formosa Nature Reserve wetlands stretch for 60kms along the Algarve coast and you’ll spot many species of birds, as well as the Portuguese water dog (the dogs help the fishermen catch their fish) and the galinha-sultan (sultan hen), which is only found here in Portugal. The popular Zoo Marine Park has dolphins and sea lions, and an emphasis on science and conservation. Anyone over the age of six can swim with the dolphins, too. The Algarve’s beaches range from long sandy shorelines, bordered by promenades and cafes, to secluded sea-sculpted coves, dotted with caves and interesting rock formations and framed by golden sandstone cliffs. Explore the sculpted shapes and caves of the Algarve’s stunning coastline from the sea: take a boat trip from Albufeira’s harbour and you may even see pods of dolphins swimming alongside the boat.

Foodies will be delighted with the treats that the Algarve offers, from chicken piri-piri to arroz de lingueirão (similar to paella). It is said that the Portuguese have more than 365 recipes which feature bacalhau (salted cod) – more than one for each day of the year. Look out for this cornerstone of Portuguese cooking on restaurant menus. Try Michelin-starred dining at Vila Vita’s restaurant, Ocean, or Henrique Leis or Willie’s Restaurant. Head to Vila Joya hotel (near Praia do Gale) to sample more stunning cuisine. Sardinhas assados (grilled sardines) are often barbecued over charcoal in a steel drum by vendors on the quayside or on the street and served on fresh, crusty bread. A simple, cheap but tasty culinary treat not to be missed! It’s best sampled during Portimão’s ten-day sardine festival in August, or the slightly smaller sardine fest at Olhas d’Agua (between Vilamora and Albufeira) also in August. The Algarve really does have something for everyone, so, if you would like more information please contact me.

Gardening

W

e should now be feeling the benefit of the longer days and hopefully some warm sunshine, but beware, there is always a threat of night frosts. Although April is a lean month for fresh vegetables, it is a good month to get ahead by sowing seeds indoors or outside in cold frames and under cloches. If you covered your plot over the winter months, the soil may well be warm enough to plant and sow certain crops directly outdoors. However, if you are tempted to get sowing, it is still risky as it may be too cold for the seeds to germinate; the allotment will always catch up eventually and reward your patience with a bumper harvest. A more useful job this month is to prepare seed beds ready for sowing. If you forgot to manure in the autumn, you can still add really well-rotted manure or compost, but dig it in thoroughly. Soil should be broken down into small even particles, stones and woody material removed, raking the soil over until you get a fine “tilth”; don’t rake when the soil is too wet. If you are sowing, remember - if the soil is dry, water the base of the drill generously before sowing; if it’s wet, sprinkle a thin layer of sand before sowing. You can sow a number of seeds indoors; chillies, peppers, celery, courgettes and summer squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting broccoli and sweetcorn are just a few. Brassicas can be planted outdoors in nursery beds or in modules or pots. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules, and they have grown a couple of “true leaves”, prick

them out and move them to individual pots or larger modules. You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny days, but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches. Jobs to do this month include:● Earth-up early potatoes. ● Plant second early and main crop potatoes and onion sets. ● The majority of root crops can be sown now and it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips. ● Sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot (if the soil is cold and wet), cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves and salad leaves. ● Don’t forget to regularly hand-weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. ● Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered, as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to draught damage. Adding a mulch around the base will help. ● Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans. ● Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft.

Bourne Academy Student’s Rock!!! - “Rock of Ages” Review by Tom Swinn On March 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2017, talented students from Bourne Academy took to the stage to perform the West End and Broadway hit musical, “Rock of Ages”. The musical includes many well-known ’80s rock songs by Poison, Bon Jovi and Journey, so the cast and crew had a huge challenge of bringing these wellknown songs to life, besides transporting the audience to Los Angeles in the 1980s. The show was a huge success, with many members of the audience coming back to see it for a second and, in some cases, a third night. The principal cast was led by the Year 13 Performing Arts A level group, who performed in the show as part of their exam course, and they certainly rocked! They performed with extreme maturity and portrayed their roles with believability and gusto. Students from Years 7 to 12 took on the roles of the ensemble, go-go dancers, rockers, protestors and waitresses, with sheer professionalism and creativity, to make the whole performance a huge team effort, highlighting the vast amount of talent to be found at Bourne Academy. The production team and live band also worked with enthusiasm, and enhanced the performance with creative lighting decisions, outstanding costumes, brilliant organisation and wonderful musicians. Mrs Parker,(Head of Performing Arts), said, “I am immensely proud of every single individual who took part in the production, whether it was working front-of-house, car parking duties, being part of the production team, performing in the band or as a member of the cast. They all worked with determination and showed a huge dedication to the arts. They made the whole process enjoyable and faultless. Bourne Academy students definitely do rock!” By the final number, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”, the audience were on their feet, singing and waving their glow sticks. A fantastic time was had by all, and this was definitely a musical to remember.

One comment from a parent, typical of many, was just how impressed they were with “Westy’s Nursery”: “We were obviously just a little anxious about how things might change once Bourne Westfield took over in September. However, we need not have worried as our daughter is thoroughly enjoying her time with Mrs Martin and the other ladies. She looks forward to going to nursery each day, and we are enjoying listening to her tell us the sorts of things she has been learning each week. I think Bourne Westfield has successfully enhanced the foundations already laid.”

How to apply To apply for a place for September 2017 or for January 2018/April 2018, please complete the application form on the Bourne Westfield website and return to starting@bournewestfield. lincs.sch.uk. Schools

Morton C. of E. Primary School - ‘Hand in hand, together we can - Respect, Achieve, Enjoy, Believe.’ Morton Church of England Primary School converted to Academy status on September 1st 2016, and we celebrated our conversion with our new values statement. As part of the Lincoln Anglican Academies Trust, we have the independence to retain our own identity whilst working alongside other schools in effective collaboration.

In 2016, we were inspected as a church school and we were graded Outstanding, supporting our OfSTED judgement of Good in all areas. This is an exceptionally happy and caring school where explicitly taught Christian values such as friendship, respect, peace and humility are deeply embedded and integral to every aspect of school life. (SIAMS inspection 2016) Our family ethos extends to all areas of school life. We offer a full range of sports with our ambition to help every child be offered the chance to play competitively for the school. Music and Arts are celebrated with opportunities for children to perform in drama and music events throughout their time at school. Every child has the chance to shine. All of our staff strive to offer high quality curriculum experiences for all age groups. Children develop a love for learning that has been enhanced by our recent focus on developing a Growth Mindset. This helps the children to understand how to think, learn and take on new challenges. One of our latest developments is a purpose-built Forest School on our site. All of our children enjoy Forest School sessions throughout the year with our own trained leader,

Charlotte Gutsell. Our Forest School offers all children activities to develop confidence and self-esteem, through hands-on learning experience in an outdoor setting. The children love their Forest School sessions, as the following opinions show: “I like that you see loads of things that are always there but you don’t get time to really look at them.” “I love to make things using the tools; I like sawing posts for the fence and then using the mallet and weaving the branches.” “You discover new things that you never knew you could do.” “I love Forest School because you discover and talk about bugs and trees.” “I like going on the nature walk, looking for nests and animal homes.” We welcome visitors – so if you would like to find out more about the school, please contact us on 01778 570389 or enquiries@morton.lincs.sch.uk (Words from Mr. George Trafford – Headteacher)

How to Spot Fake e-mails - A Quick Guide by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC

E

-mail spamming and scamming is becoming a huge problem, as more and more sources try to lure you in with false e-mails and links. Anything from promising free goods to gift vouchers, pleas for help, warnings that your password has expired, or that your account has been compromised - the list goes on. Here are a few tips for spotting these fake e-mails.

Let’s take an example of a very common one, as of today, the Amazon Voucher scam. On the face of it, and with a quick glance, it does look like an Amazon e-mail but look closer; • Many of the tell-tale signs of a scam are evident in this e-mail. • Poor grammar. • Personalisation in the subject line.

• A link to click on, requesting information or login. • More poor grammar – 90% really do have multiple errors. • A sender e-mail address that doesn’t match the company logo. The purpose of this e-mail is to get you to click on the Complete Registration link, and you will then be prompted to enter your Amazon login details – if you do, then they’ve got you! Not only your Amazon details, but also your login and password - not good for those of you that use the same password for separate sources. Let’s dig a little deeper. Let’s assume none of the other signs were there. How else can we tell this is a scam? If you are using an e-mail application, such as Windows Live Mail or Outlook, by putting your mouse cursor on the blue Complete Registration

text, the actual (real) link that this will connect you to, if clicked, pops up. As you can see in this example, this is definitely not an Amazon link. Would you intentionally connect to a link with all that rubbish in the address? Of course not, but this is exactly what happens if you click on that link. This also applies to e-mail scams that include an attachment. The principle is the same. Check out that attachment and never open it, unless you are 100% sure of the source and are expecting it. Now, after sharing these tips with you, I’m going to negate all this and basically say that none of this really matters! E-mail has become such a target for scammers and criminals that my actual advice is to NEVER open a mail containing a link such as this, even if it looks perfect. If Amazon really had a voucher for you, then by logging in to your Amazon account via your usual browser, you would see if there was any communication pending. This is true of almost any large modern organisation. Use your account logins to check the status of your accounts and communications - never rely on e-mail prompts.

The Box Room Boutique – Happy First Year Anniversary! It is encouraging to report that the Box Room Boutique, (quite possibly Bourne’s smallest retail outlet, in terms of floor space), has recently celebrated its first year of trading, and can look back on what has been a successful twelve months for owners, Barbara Fox and Jayne Towers. Every town needs its small, independent shops, like The Box Room, where the customer is met with not just a dazzling array of colourful, sensibly-priced merchandise, but with a friendly smile and un-pressurised service. On display is a large range of colourful handbags, scarves, fashion accessories and jewellery, all aimed at any age, from little girls through to their grandmothers, besides a gentlemen’s section, offering pure silk ties, dickie bows and cufflinks. The small range of specialised wedding and prom- style jewellery, to include tiaras, is already proving popular this year, as the “season” gets under way.

Phone Companies are Waging War on Nuisance Callers You’re just about to sit down to your favourite soap or are in the middle of cooking dinner or bathing the kids, the phone rings - and it’s one of THOSE calls. It is estimated that around 30 million nuisance calls are made each week. Did you know that the average British person receives four nuisance calls a week? More often than not, they are direct sales calls or automated ‘offers’. It is little wonder, then, that according to research by BT, 60% of people find receiving these kinds of nuisance and cold calls stressful.

BT is one of the companies fighting back, with a new breakthrough service to help manage the situation, by developing a system called BT Call Protect to help customers avoid nuisance calls on their landline - by diverting a whopping thirty million calls a week to junk voicemail. Other service providers are also putting customers first, with Sky and Virgin offering their own system to deal with nuisance calls. Check with your provider to see what they offer. It may be worth mentioning that at Safe Local Trades, none of our professional and recommended tradesmen operate a ‘cold calling’ approach. Our user-friendly website www.safelocaltrades.co.uk offers customers looking for a particular trade, the opportunity to contact the professionals through an online enquiry form or by telephoning 0800 014 1832. It’s safe to say that all our time is precious, and we don’t want to be disturbed or harassed in our own homes by these calls. Did you know that there is a way to curb these calls? The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service which enables you to join the official register to opt out of unsolicited sales and marketing calls. Remember, it is a legal requirement for telemarketers NOT to call a TPS subscribed number after 28 days, but you should start noticing a gradual decline, once registered. To find out more, visit www.tpsonline.org.uk or telephone 0345 070 0707 You can protect your privacy even further by not giving out your telephone contact details to a third party during online surveys, quizzes or competitions. And if you continue to be plagued by people telling you that you have won a dream holiday, offering to help you after your ‘car accident’ or claim to have a PPI reward for you – you can report them online at https://complaints. tpsonline.org.uk/consumer/ complaint A p r il 2 0 1 7

Mayor

Words from the Mayor Councillor Colin Pattison

Hello Everyone. Firstly this month, two “increases” to think about. For starters, the increasing length of useful daylight hours. Clocks have moved on an hour and we can now look forward to summertime, with the returning swallows and swifts, along with the bountiful displays of garden flowers and hanging baskets. The second increase is the number of events and Civic functions my wife and I have either attended or have lined up. In March, we supported the Friends of Butterfield’s fundraising evening at the Abbey Church Hall and were marvellously entertained by “The Ukulele Orchestra of Spalding”. Close on the heels of this was a presentation evening at Wake House with the Bourne 1st Scout Group. It was my pleasure and honour to formally welcome Mrs Jill Hughes, the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire, to our town for the evening. The event was wonderfully marshalled by Greg Cejer, ably supported by other “Pack Leaders”, cubs, scouts and many helpers. Jill gave a marvellous account and insight into being the High Sheriff of our county. Well done to Sainsbury’s in Bourne, who have a great relationship with the Scout Association, for giving access to bag-packers around Christmas, raising £2,700, half of which was donated during the evening to numerous local groups and organisations. March also saw us attend and support fellow Mayors/Civic heads at their respective Civic Dinner/Fundraising events in Melton Mowbray, Market Deeping, the Chairman of SKDC (Councillor Judy Smith), Horncastle and Gainsborough … to name but a few. You certainly get around the county in this honourable position. We also continue our own fundraising efforts for our chosen charities, The Willoughby School, The Carers Sitters Service and The Butterfield Centre. I wish to make an early mention here of what will be our final “money grabbing event”. All being well, we hope to host in the Church Hall on Saturday May 20th, the Mayor and Mayoress’s Final Hoorah Tea Party. This will be a chance to bring people together and say “thank you” to 50

all those who have helped, guided and supported us in our year of office. Please come along and enjoy tea and cakes, raffle, tombolas and any other nonsense we can dream up. Fiona and I would love to see you there. Take care and stay safe. Council News Bourne Town Council managed to secure a grant of £2,500 from Lincolnshire County Council to replace the bus shelter on South Road, opposite the cemetery, and this “grot spot” has now been improved with this acquisition. Tenders for grass cutting have been returned to the Clerk’s office at the Town Council and hopefully, we’ll see action from the beginning of April. The Town Council will be processing nominations received for the “Community Champion” Award.

Legal Corner

Family Law in the 21st Century

T

hey often say that the law reflects society, but sometimes it takes time for the law to catch up with social change. Up until the 1973 Matrimonial Causes Act, anyone who wanted to get divorced would have to give evidence in person. This was a difficult procedure for many, and divorce also carried a particular stigma. Family breakdown is always a personal tragedy and our legal system has evolved to try to help in very difficult circumstances.

Things changed as the 1970s developed into the eighties and nineties, as a paper-based system from the 1973 Act took hold, and society changed. If a person’s marriage is in difficulty, they should consider if they want to go to Relate, who will try to encourage the parties to find a solution before going down the divorce route. Today, many people can avoid having to go to court physically, even in connection with financial matters. However, in more involved or contested matters, clients do still sometimes have to attend court. Sadly, where parties in a relationship are unable to resolve or reconcile, they should take legal advice as to whether to divorce or agree to a separation agreement. With regard to finances, a schedule of income, outgoings, assets, liabilities and pension provision needs to be agreed, so that they can try to negotiate a settlement. Only if this does not go well do they physically need to attend court. There is now a move to encourage parties to mediate, but they do still need legal advice before they commit to a settlement.

Sometimes, parties are getting married and are wanting to consider the terms of a Pre-Nuptial Agreement, although this is still rather rare. Disclosure should still take place in relation to this matter and such agreements can affect the parties if they separate relatively early on in their marriage. This may become a developing area. Where parties separate, and who have not been married, they have to have recourse to principles set out in case law. Sometimes these cases are decided on the contribution that the parties have made, together with the promises that have been stated. The cases concern the Law of Trust and each case will turn on its facts. It can be very relevant as to which one of the parties, (or both of them), has their name on the title documentation held at the Land Registry or, if the property is unregistered, on the paper Title Deeds, and what was expressed at the time. Some parties agree the terms of a Deed of Beneficial Interest in case they are to split, which can be particularly relevant if they do not marry and they separate before marriage. The law relating to cohabitees is long overdue to be considered by our legislators.

Police Patrol

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Burglary by Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

T

here are many offences relating to the Theft Act; however, the penultimate offence I want to consider is that of burglary. This offence strikes at the very heart of our homes, invading our privacy and causing much anguish. Section 9 of the Theft Act 1968 states: 9(1) A person is guilty of burglary if (a) he enters any building or part of a building as a trespasser and with intent to commit any such offence as is mentioned in sub-section (2) (relates to stealing/ GBH/criminal damage) (b) having entered any building or part of a building as a trespasser, he steals or attempts to steal anything in the building or that part of it, or inflicts or attempts to inflict on any person therein any grievous bodily harm. As can be seen, there are two elements to the offence. The first is entering as a trespasser with intent to commit an offence. The second is, having entered as a trespasser, then commits, or attempts to commit, an offence. Burglary carries a sentence of ten years imprisonment, (or fourteen years if a dwelling), and a minimum of three years if the third conviction. If aggravated, it carries a life sentence. The offence is aggravated if the suspect has with them a firearm, imitation firearm, weapon of offence or explosive, (known by the mnemonic WIFE). A part of a building can be anywhere inside a building where the offender does not have authority to access and is therefore a trespasser. For example, a customer going behind the till area in a shop, or a visiting friend is shown into the kitchen but goes into the living room uninvited. Entering a building can be physical – the whole body or part of a body such as just the hand, using an instrument such as a fishing rod to hook something, or

even an innocent party such as a child under the age of ten. The last two are considered to be an extension of the offender and so the offence is complete, as long as there is the intent to steal, damage or commit GBH. Many offences of burglary are committed by opportunists who see a simple weakness in a building and exploit it. By just following a few steps, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary. For more information, have a look at www.police.uk/crimeprevention-advice/burglary/ Register your valuables at www.immobilise.com which is the UK national property register, increasing the chances of having your stolen property returned, when found by police. To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Crimestoppers 0800 555 111

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT Next month will see the mayoral chains of office pass from Colin Pattison to this month’s “Hot Seat” incumbent, Paul Fellows. Forty-five years married to Judi, with three children and eight grandchildren, (“who bring us joy beyond measure, if not a little chaos”), Paul looks back on forty years of teaching Drama as “a lot of fun!” With others, he founded Bourne Youth Theatre, for which he wrote and directed three shows a year for over ten years. Next, he joined Bourne Town Council as an Independent Councillor, and is immensely proud of the honour of becoming Mayor in May. Paul explains, “Judi and I will do everything we can to represent Bourne fully throughout the year. I want to offer my services for a day’s work experience anywhere in Bourne, during my year as Mayor, doing anything. I feel it would be an excellent way of getting a wider understanding of what goes on in Bourne, in a very hands-on way”.

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? I was actually born in a factory in Birmingham. My parents were caretakers of the factory at the time and, as I was born at home, I feel I can genuinely say I was made in a factory in Birmingham! I have a very vague memory of being in the Bull Ring Market one Christmas, and could have been no older than three at the time.

Paul Fellows

My parents were brilliant, both solidly working class people, with values to match. Sadly, I have no one to blame for any character deficiencies I may have, apart from myself!!! Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? My wife Jude, an amazing, wonderful person. I keep telling her that she won first prize in life’s lottery when she got me, but I don’t think she’s convinced. Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? Nye Bevan, the architect of the National Health Service. It would be great just to say, “Thanks

a p ri l 2 0 1 7

mate”. Our NHS is brilliant. Let’s have a “conversation” that makes it better, with the proviso that we have to pay for it through choices or taxation. Drop Dead Fred. I love the man! If you’ve never seen the film, watch it, it’s a blueprint for parenting skills. How would you describe yourself in only five words? Imaginative, amiable, caring, capable, committed.

If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why? I’d change very little. Bourne has to be one of the best-kept secrets in the UK, a wonderful place to live. We need to work together to develop its resources and community commitment. Together, we can make some really exciting things happen. What advice would you give to a “sixteen-yearold you”? Don’t be frightened to ask the “pretty” girls out because you think you’ll be rejected. Luckily for me, a “pretty” girl did say yes!

Your Finances

Are You Taking More Risk than a “Dam Italian Goat”? by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd

I

saw a story recently about goats addicted to licking the wall of a dam in Gran Paradiso National Park in Northern Italy, apparently addicted to the salt and minerals which are present in the rocks. Apparently, these alpine ibex are as intelligent as dogs, which makes this death-defying “grazing” on a near vertical dam wall, even more interesting.

This led me to think about other “interesting” behavioural traits, such as people who invest money into pensions. For many people, a pension fund will be the second biggest asset of value that they own, after their property. For some, it may be worth more than their property. These assets not only benefit the owner during their lifetime, but also, potentially, their partner, children, grandchildren or anyone else they choose, thanks to the new pension rules. So why, with such a valuable asset, would you take such great risks like the goats in Northern Italy? Why allow an insurance company to take a charge of up to 5% of each contribution you make? Why leave your money in a so-called “managed fund” that charges higher fees than most specialist and actively managed funds, and certainly many more times higher charges than tracker funds, which, ironically, many of the insurance company managed funds simply replicate the performance of?

was doing online, or track its performance or monitor costs and charges. It would seem, given the choice, you might well act to avoid these pitfalls. However, we humans, much like the dear goats, are hooked on the simplicity and routine, so we continue to save into these old-fashioned pension schemes. (For instance, Zurich’s flagship Managed Pension Fund which has over £12 billion of investors’ money within it, can cost anywhere between 0.75% and 4.25% per year, dependent upon the type of unit held and it holds almost 70% of its assets in shares . source: Trustnet as at 31/01/2017) Speaking to an independent financial adviser can quickly highlight these issues and, scarily, probably many more… but fear not, solutions are abundant and easily and quickly achievable. Advice has a value and a cost, but your doing nothing could prove to be far more expensive in the long term. As for the goats, I’ll certainly not be chasing them up and down the dam, to warn them of the dangers of their love for a salty rock!

Why not allow yourself the flexibility of taking your pension in a way that suits your lifestyle, circumstances and tax position? Why not allow your loved ones to benefit from your hard-saved pension fund in the most efficient way? Imagine that, in this day and age, you didn’t even have access to look at how well (or not) your pension fund

It’s Not Just Flowers That Rise in the Spring! by Lionel Smith

L

ast year we saw a lot of ticks. The relatively mild winter this year will have done little to reduce the numbers for this spring .Ticks will start to rise out of the ground in the next two months, when we get the warmer weather. Now is a good time to think about tick treatment.

Ticks are part of the spider family. They feed off the blood of animals, after which they drop to the ground and lay their eggs. The three main sources of ticks in this country are sheep, deer and hedgehogs. However, they will sometimes attach themselves to dogs, cats, humans and other animals. When one of my sons was a baby, I was horrified to find a tick attached to his head after playing in grass in Scotland.

Before a tick feeds, it looks like a small spider. It sits at the top of grass stalks with its front legs held up waiting for an animal to come by. Once it gets onto the animal, it crawls up the body and starts to feed. The animal does not usually feel this, as the tick injects a local anaesthetic along with anti-coagulants to make the blood flow. The body of the tick now grows hugely and turns a grey colour. This is the stage at which the tick becomes visible. After feeding for a day or so, the ticks detach and drop to the ground. When removing a tick, it is important not to squeeze it, as this can increase the risk of infections being passed from the tick. The mouthparts of the tick need to be grasped close to the skin with something like tweezers, and the tick removed by twisting, not pulling. There is a very useful tool called the O’ Tom Hook that makes tick removal much easier. Your vet will be able to provide these. The most worrying disease that can be transmitted by ticks is Lyme disease, caused by bacteria, and it is on the increase in the last few years. The most common symptoms in dogs and cats are lethargy, joint pain and fever, and these can occur months after the tick bite. Other effects include neurological symptoms, heart disease and meningitis. Once diagnosed, the disease is easily treated in its earlier stages with a certain type of antibiotic. This same disease can also affect humans with the same symptoms. Infected people will often develop a skin rash a few days or weeks after the bite. This often looks like a target, with a central circle at the bite site and an outer ring. There are several treatments on the market that kill and repel ticks. Take care, though, as many of the modern flea preparations do not kill ticks. Talk to your veterinary surgery for more information.

Bourne & District Lawn Tennis Club Open Day Sunday April 23rd, from 10.00am at the Abbey Lawn Bourne

Y

ou may think that April is too early for tennis, but here’s an invitation to check out what your local tennis club has to offer, when they host their Open Day on Sunday April 23rd. There are three hard courts, (two of which are floodlit for winter evenings), and five well- maintained grass courts available from May to September, in the magnificent walled Monks Garden at the Abbey Lawn, close to the centre of town. This idyllic venue provides the perfect setting for those wishing to participate in either organised social tennis, league matches, or to simply just come down for a friendly ‘knock’.

Social tennis, match play and a coaching programme are the cornerstones of the club. Social tennis sessions for members are on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, and Friday mornings on the hard courts during the winter, with the addition of Thursday evenings on the grass in the summer. The club enters teams in the Slazenger Lincolnshire, Peterborough and District, and AEGON tennis leagues. All successful clubs, whatever the sport, must look to the future and welcome young people to join. A crucial aspect of Bourne Tennis Club then is the Junior Development Programme, run in conjunction with the club’s coaching partner, ON2COURT. Regular junior coaching sessions for all abilities are held on a Friday afternoon from 4pm, and Saturday from 9am. Additional performance programmes help young players to further develop skills, providing a gateway to being part of a team, and playing in AEGON and LTA tournaments. Personal coaching for all members is also available.

Discovering . . . Hereward Labour Camp - Rex Needle

U

nemployment in Britain soared between the two world wars of the 20th century and by 1931 the number of people without jobs had reached its highest total of almost three million, or 22 per cent of the working population. There was unrest and social concern as a result and the government strategy to cope with the problem included the opening of instructional centres to provide men from high unemployment areas manual work coupled with a programme of physical training. By 1937, there were 22 such centres housing about 21,000 men a year, among them a residential camp at Bourne consisting of twenty huts built of wood and corrugated iron on the edge of Bourne Wood where trainees attended for three-month periods of military-style discipline and pick-and-shovel labour. On arrival they were given corduroy trousers, a jacket and working boots, knife, fork, spoon and enamel cup. There was a dining room with wooden benches and tables on which were served wholesome and plentiful meals, handed out from an adjoining kitchen through hatches to the trainees as they filed in. There was also a washroom for ablutions and laundry, a recreation room, library and sick bay. The huts were large, well-lit, weatherproof and comfortable. Work

began at 6 am and lasted from ten to twelve hours and the tasks were manual, usually digging ditches, cutting down trees or building roads. Camp life was austere, the living conditions basic and in the evenings or at weekends there was little to do as the huts were deliberately built far away from the temptations of the pub or the dance hall and in Bourne, it was a mile outside the town as it was then. For their trouble, the inmates received two or three shillings and a packet of cigarettes each week. Nevertheless, despite its remote location, inmates at the Bourne camp or Instructional Centre as it became known, did join in the community life of the town and in 1931, when Bourne United Charities acquired the Abbey Lawn, they carried out most of the work of turning it into the park that we see today. With the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, unemployment ceased to be a problem. The labour camp at Bourne was shut and converted for use as a Home Office approved school for young offenders which eventually closed in 1951 when the buildings were dismantled to make way for the Beech Avenue housing estate that we see today. Operation Snap! by Tom Ingram

I

was recently invited on Facebook to join a Peterborough driving instructor group, where the members upload video footage taken from driving school in-car cameras of drivers committing a variety of road traffic offences. I politely declined the invitation as, frankly, I have enough to do running my driving school without indulging in such activities! But it seems that this is the way things are going. Bourne recently had its own “Bourne Bungle Drivers” Facebook page, where the public uploaded images of poor parking in the town, but it seems North Wales police have gone one step further in the name of road safety. Since last October, North Wales police have been positively encouraging the public to send in their recorded footage of poor driving and, to date, fifty-

eight offences have been processed, including failing to comply with a red traffic signal and driving without due care and attention. Search Twitter with #OpSnap to see how the public are bringing the drivers to the attention of the police. It appears that, so successful is the initiative that North Wales police are being regularly contacted by other police forces across the UK to introduce the scheme in more locations. Do you have a view on this? Is this one step closer to Big Brother gone mad? Do you feel that if it improves road safety it is worthwhile? I would be interested to hear your comments – email me on info@BIGTOM. org.uk

Strange … but True! This year’s “Put your Head in the Lion’s Mouth Award” goes to Mr Andrew Jackson, 48, who turned up for an interview with Greater Manchester Police and ended up being banned from driving. Whilst attending an interview for an IT management position on January 25th this year, Jackson began to answer the questions, and very soon the G.M.P. interviewer noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath. He denied he had been drinking before the interview, but said that he had shared a bottle of wine with his wife the night before. Jackson was then breathalysed and the results showed he had been driving over the limit, on his journey to his interview. He admitted driving while above the legal drink driving limit and was disqualified from driving for a year and ordered to pay fines totalling £235. Inspector Tony Allt, of G.M.P.’s Roads Policing Unit, said, “Although the circumstances surrounding this particular incident are unusual, this case highlights the fact that there are a number of motorists who think they are fine to drive after drinking the night before”. Clearly, for thinking that he was one of them, Mr Jackson wins the Award … and loses his head to the hungry lion!
