Introduction
Welcome to Your May Issue.
Here we are again – summer around the corner, lawns trimmed, barbecues brushed down … and teenagers mumbling and stumbling from one extra revision class to the next, nervously counting down the days before the exam onslaught begins. Let us all, (especially parents of these chilled youngsters who are about to morph into something so challenging and unpredictable, almost overnight), just remember that we’ve all come through, relatively unscathed … and so can they. Let’s just keep providing the calm harbour, from which they are soon to set sail, wherever their future may take them. In the meantime, let them take a break from revision, and share with you the varied range of top tips and interesting advice and features bursting out of the pages in your hands!

This month, we look forward to longer and warmer days, especially when two of them are bank holidays, where we can hopefully enjoy some quality time together with family and friends. Our Events section is, as ever, your first port of call for that special event to attend. Then, perhaps you could be tempted by one of our many superb local eateries who we’ve included this month. Finally, talking of bank hoIidays, I must admit some interest was created upon hearing of the Labour party’s proposal to increase by 50% the amount of bank holidays to come our way, if / when they assume power after June 8th. Could this possibly be the master-stroke to confirm the most curious and unpredictable treble of recent years – Brexit, Trump and Corbyn? Enjoy the read!

Stephanies Flowers For All
- Twenty Years in Bourne “Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the mind.” These are the words of a nineteenth century, American naturalist, Luther Burbank – a gentleman whose name and reputation may not be too familiar with the people of Bourne! However, the same cannot be said for Stephanie Romaine, the popular lady whose floristry business is this month celebrating twenty years of trading in Bourne. A first-class reputation is a most sought-after commodity in any walk of life. As a result of her sheer dedication, no small degree of artistic flair and some consistently strong support from her family and work colleagues over the years, this mother of two has succeeded in forging a very enviable name for herself. After gaining her floristry qualifications at Wisbech’s Isle College, Stephanie spent eight years at “Joy of Flowers” in Bourne, before embarking on the challenge of being self-employed. Boyfriend at the time, James, recognised the potential in the blossoming talents of Miss Sherwin, so was happy to sell his car to raise the collateral for the delivery vehicle, which was soon to prove an invaluable asset for the business. Romance bloomed and wedding bells were soon to be heard. Stephanie is not just keen to acknowledge the support always offered by husband James and other family members, but insists that so much of her success as a leading florist in the south of the county is down to her team of skilled

perfectionists who create the variety of arrangements which leave her Crown Walk premises each day, who offer advice and friendly service in the shop, and to the delivery drivers, who combine reliability with cheerful interaction with the customers, which has even included renderings of “Happy birthday to you”! Stephanies can offer a full range of bespoke floral designs for all occasions, from weddings and funerals, through anniversaries to receptions and parties. Stephanie is always willing to discuss any particular request and can offer wise advice, drawing upon close to thirty years of experience. Multiple deliveries of fresh flowers, mostly from The Netherlands, throughout the week always ensure a quality product, and being an Interflora Diploma Holder enables the team’s design talents to be showcased far and wide, as the arrangements find homes across a large swathe of South Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. It’s true, Stephanie’s floral arrangements are indeed, “sunshine, food and medicine to the mind”.

pril was a busy month down at the allotment, planting potatoes, preparing the bean trench and seed beds and planting out a few seeds; now it’s a battle against the weeds! As soon as the weather warms up and seeds begin to germinate, the weeds seem to take over, so be vigilant and weed regularly; you don’t want the nutrients and moisture being taken away from your crops. May is a difficult month to judge as the weather can vary. We sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived but watch the weather in case of late frosts and protect any tender seedlings. Also take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches”. Cut down the 2 litre plastic drinks bottles, as they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas. This month sees more pests appearing and sampling your crops before you have chance to! A couple of ideas for repelling the varmints:● Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot. ● Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigolds and nasturtiums.

● There are numerous vegetables that can be planted out this month but try not to plant everything at once. Try “succession sowing”, a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks and you should have a steady supply, rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination. Remember to keep earthing up potatoes, cover carrot sowing with netting to prevent carrot fly and, if in any doubt about the weather, cover young plants with fleece. ● It is possible to grow two crops planted at the same time in the same row or bed, one fast and one slow growing, (intersowing) so that you get the most out of your plot. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts. You can also sow the fast growers when there is a gap between harvesting one crop and planting another. ● Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list but a few include: carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Any seeds that were sown earlier will need thinning out: doing this when they are quite small lessens the disturbance to the surrounding plants. ● Sow indoors: chillies, peppers, courgettes, pumpkins and winter squashes, runner beans and sprouting broccoli. Let’s hope the sun shines!

Home Interiors
Attic Story - Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin There’s a lot to consider if you fancy extending your home into the loft. At first glance, it might seem an impossible task - all those rafters and beams cluttering up the space. Of course, your roof wasn’t designed for living in so your attic isn’t going to be light and airy, spacious and comfortable. Instead, it’s probably draughty, cramped, dark, and a tad creepy. But, if your family is expanding and you need another bedroom, or if you work from home and yearn for a calm and peaceful workspace, ‘going up’ is an excellent way to achieve it. Your investment could be more than repaid by increasing the value of your property. “The Nationwide March 2016 House Price Index has revealed that adding a loft conversion, or an extension incorporating a double bedroom and a bathroom, could add more than 20% to the value of a three-bedroom, one bathroom house”. Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s Chief Economist.
I was asked for my top tip on loft conversions by a specialist roofing company, in preparation for an article they were writing. There’s so much to consider that I took the time to think about my absolute best piece of advice. This is what I said: “No matter how large or small the space you’ve scrounged from your loft, you really must give consideration to the access. Make sure your loft staircase is wide and ensure it either completely contrasts in style and design with your house stairs, or that it matches perfectly. I’ve seen too many loft conversions where the stairs have been built, but no thought has been given to their design. They transport you to an exciting place…. let them tell the story.”
My top tip on loft conversions is to make sure your loft staircase is wide and ensure it either completely contrasts in style and design with your house stairs, or that it matches perfectly. Period properties with several floors expressed status through the architecture and design of their staircases. To impress visitors, the most money would be spent on the ground floor and first floors while the bottom and the top, the cellar steps and attic staircase, would be made in a utilitarian fashion. After all, it was only the servants who would be using them! Times have changed - don’t let your loft staircase let you down! Another piece of advice I would give is this: When drawing up the design with your architect or builder, make sure you consult an interior designer before you approve the plans. Your newly acquired space will be quirky and will require clever ideas to make the best use of it. Make sure it delivers what you are hoping for. Can you envisage how you will use it? What headroom will you have to move around? Will the windows deliver too much or too little light? What will it look like during the daytime - and at night? Where will you put the furniture? Will it offer stylish storage solutions? How are you going to decorate it? A list that goes on and on... make sure you are clear on all of your questions before you go ahead for planning approval! Inheritance Tax Changes - What’s That All About Then?
F
rom April 6th 2017, the new Inheritance Tax residence nil-rate band has begun to be phased in. These changes mean that individuals could be able to claim an additional £100,000 to offset against the sale of a family home after a death. The residence nil-rate band, or the family home allowance, as it is sometimes being called, will rise to £175,000 by 2020, meaning that an individual will be able to give away £500,000 tax-free in total.
The allowances are transferable between partners, meaning that a couple could eventually have an Inheritance Tax allowance of up to £1 million. As expected, there are strict and complex rules that have to be followed to enable your estate to qualify for the residence nil-rate band. For example, your property must be left to a direct descendant, such as a child or grandchild, meaning that those planning to leave their estate to nephews, nieces or other beneficiaries, will not qualify for the relief.
Also, the new rules mean that individuals who downsize, or sell their home to fund care, do not miss out. In this situation, individuals get an “inheritance tax credit”, which means they get the tax break equivalent to the value of their original home. However, strict rules apply again, and both the lower-value property they moved to, if downsizing, and any remaining proceeds from the sale of the house, must go to direct descendants. Your will should be regularly reviewed, to ensure that it is up-todate and reflecting your wishes.

Spring Fever Affects More than Just the Housing Market... by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell
S
o, “spring fever” has, all of a sudden, become “election fever” which was a surprise, to put it mildly. I wasn’t aware we’d been so successful as to force the Prime Minister to think about making a move out of Number 10 so soon, but we’ve got some great properties for her if she needs them in June! All joking aside, a general election gives us all an opportunity to take stock and look at what matters to us. The housing market is going to be a big topic for a lot of voters, so only good things can come from this opportunity. Like myself, they will be out there selling all the positives they have to offer, so let’s take a quick look at who’s saying what.
These statements come from the parties directly, either from leading party members or their own websites, but it shows that good things are on the horizon. I’m sure other parties will throw their hats in the ring on this topic as well, so let’s all keep an eye on this and the other BIG issues of the day. We’re still experiencing high demand and fast sale times so, if you’d like to move into Number 10 in June, we’ll get you sold for a great price, so that you can get moved and ready for the summer. Call us today for a free valuation or any other propertyrelated advice.
Labour: “We will build a million new homes in five years, with at least half a million council homes, through our public investment strategy. We will end insecurity for private renters by introducing rent controls, secure tenancies and a charter of private tenants’ rights, and increase access to affordable home ownership.” Conservatives: “We are determined to make housing more affordable and secure for ordinary working families and have a rental market that offers much more choice. We understand people are living longer in private rented accommodation which is why we are fixing this broken housing market so all types of home are more affordable.” Liberal Democrats: “Liberal Democrats have a plan to get Britain building the 300,000 new homes a year that we need. This includes helping housing associations and councils to build more homes through better access to finance and at least ten new Garden Cities. We want a Housing Investment Bank to generate funding for new homes and support for the construction industry in recruiting enough workers.”

Thorpe Hall community fundraiser, Cheyenne Graves said: “Garden Parties are a lovely way to show off all the hard work you’ve put into your garden – and let’s face it friends and neighbours love being nosy and pinching ideas, so you’re guaranteed a good turn-out for your event! Even better, how about rounding up a few neighbours to get involved too and stage an Open Garden event in your village or neighbourhood. Charge people for entry, serve tea and cake and perhaps hold a raffle too and watch the money pour in. We’re delighted to have the support of local garden centres where we hope garden party organisers will be stocking up their beds and planters in preparation for their event!”

The Friends of Bourne Wood (‘the Friends’) have recently published a full colour booklet on the history, wildlife and forestry management of Bourne Wood. Bourne Wood, a large ancient woodland in south Lincolnshire, is much used and valued by the local community in Bourne The booklet was written by Richard Jefferson, the Chairman of the Friends, with assistance from a selection of other contributors. The Forestry Commission, who own Bourne Wood, paid for the design and printing. The booklet is attractively produced and includes many colour photographs of the landscape and wildlife, taken by local photographers. For visitors, it gives clear detail on parking, footpaths and facilities and includes everything you need to know for an exciting day out in the wild! Richard Jefferson said, “Since I

became involved with the Friends, I had in mind that a booklet bringing together all that was known about the Wood might be of value to local community users and visitors from further afield. I am delighted that this ambition has come to fruition and I hope that people find the booklet interesting and useful.” Sarah Roberts, Secretary of the Friends, said, “It is great to have a booklet dedicated to Bourne Wood, showcasing all the wonderful flora and fauna we have, and paying tribute to such a well-loved and much used resource by the people of Bourne and surrounding area.” Details of how to acquire a copy of the booklet (price £3) can be found on the Friends website. http://www. friendsofbournewoods.org.uk/ The booklet may also be purchased from several outlets in Bourne, including the Bourne Civic Society’s Baldocks Mill: http://www. bournecivicsociety.org.uk/ MAY 2017

Cleancare Lincs Ltd
- Trained, Trusted and Insured Cleancare Lincolnshire was formed in 2006 by Paul Cunnington, and was solely to fulfil the needs of local carpet and upholstery cleaning. Paul spent many years developing and growing the business and, as different opportunities arose, the business moved towards the cold chain distribution sector. Cleancare Lincolnshire now serves large corporate businesses by carrying out the cleaning of chillers, freezers, coolers, evaporates and flooring. Over the last few years, this has seen a steady growth and there are now seven excellent staff and three vans, travelling nationwide, ranging from Scotland to Cornwall to Kent. Further growth has now seen the firm move into a business unit, late last year. This is now the hub for Cleancare, with ample space and an office to suit. If you would like to know more, please visit www.cleancarecommercial.co.uk As Cleancare Lincolnshire Ltd began to outgrow itself, it was decided to split the company into two, and have a dedicated domestic team to serve the local community. Cleancare Lincs Ltd was formed in November 2015 and is co-owned by Paul Judd and Paul Cunnington. Paul Judd is the face of Cleancare Lincs and runs the day-to-day operation. Over time, Cleancare has developed good relationships with local businesses, care homes and charities, and works hard to grow this network. They have carried out numerous training days, so are up-to-date with all the latest cleaning techniques
and carpet and upholstery identification. Furthermore, they have recently become registered members of the NCCA (National Carpet Cleaners Association). Wise Words on Summer Security With the lighter nights, the warmer days and the gardening season about to blossom, now is the perfect time to think about summer security. With our house, most of us ensure the alarm is switched on, doors and windows are locked and a light is left on when the house is empty. But what about garden security? The brighter days and longer weekends present more time for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, and spending time with friends and family al fresco – and increases temptation for opportunist green-fingered thieves. Beware of cold callers, suggesting that your fascias or guttering need repairing, your driveway requires attention, or offering gardening services.

And when it comes to what you already have – expensive potted plants, ornaments and stylish furniture – think about the value and security of our outdoor possessions in the same way you view those inside the home. Here are some simple precautions: • Consider things that may be appealing to a thief, such as an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools / machinery or bikes). • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds. • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home. • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home. • Install some sensory / outdoor lighting.

• Alarm the garage to provide additional security, or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • If you are going away, even for the weekend – lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access. • Pack away, out of sight, any garden tools or equipment. • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group – where you and your neighbours can look out for each other. To check if there is one in your area, go to www.ourwatch.org.uk When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and / or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. Spotlight on...
The Butterfield Day Care Centre
W
incing memories of the legendary Sister Bristow flooded back recently, as I returned to the Butterfield Day Care Centre, to meet with Debbie Hague, who has been manager there now for over ten years. The cottage hospital, on the corner of North Road and Meadowgate, (where many a stitch was applied and injections administered by the daunting Sister), closed in 1983, amidst much protesting (and a petition containing 6,000 names) from the public, and re-opened in 1985 as a day centre for the elderly.
This registered charity is now self-financing, and offers a very valuable range of services to not just Bourne residents, but also to many villages in the area. There are essentially three main aspects to the operation : Day Care at the Centre, “Meals on Wheels” and the Domestic Help Service. Day Care “It’s almost like a big, extended family, and we try to provide a happy, caring environment for all of our clients”, Debbie explained. People can attend as often, or as little as they like, as the Centre is open every weekday, except for public holidays, and the charge of £25 per day is most competitive. At present, there is an average of fifteen clients per day attending, a figure which Debbie would like to see increased. Activities include regular entertainment from musicians to magicians and carol singers from local primary schools at Christmas-time. Occasional trips out to Waterside Garden Centre are popular. A hot, freshly prepared, mid-day meal and refreshments are part of the package, and it’s clear to see that every user is treated as an individual, with individual needs and interests respected. Free transport in a specialist minibus is provided for those living in Bourne and the surrounding villages, (recently extended to Aslackby and Langtoft). “Meals on Wheels” Volunteer drivers deliver a piping hot, two course, mid-day meal on any, or every, weekday to suit the client, from the Butterfield Centre to the table, using specially insulated containers to ensure it stays hot, fresh and ready to eat. For this reason, the service is restricted to just the town, and the charge is a very reasonable £4 per meal. Meals continue to be available on Bank Holidays. Domestic Help Service The Centre’s dedicated staff can also attend to the needs of clients in their home. This is purely for domestic cleaning and, normally, the same staff member will be assigned to the client for every visit. Again, a very fair £12 per hour charge makes this a popular option, and this service has also been extended recently, to include Aslackby and Langtoft. The various services offered by the Butterfield Centre are available to all. So, for further information, just contact Debbie Hague on 01778 421422 to see what you think. It won’t be as painful as trips to the Butterfield used to be! 32

Words from the Mayor Councillor Colin Pattison
To start with this month, Fiona and I would like to say a big “Thank you” to all the quizzers who attended our “Day after St Patrick’s Day Quiz” in the Church Hall on March 18th. More than sixty people took part in a thoroughly mixed and enjoyable array of questions, posed by my brother Neil, with his wife Susan keeping the scores - (Thanks guys). Everyone enjoyed fish and chips for their supper, supplied by Georges, (once again, excellent quality and well-received). The winning team, “Toby Shore”, won by a mere one point, and the evening raised around £330 towards my chosen charities. Thank you all so much. It was such a success that we have been asked to do it all over again, on Friday April 28th at 7pm in the Church Hall. For details, call 01778 426123.
Winning team (Toby Shore) from the “Day after St Patrick’s Day Quiz”
As we enter the last few weeks of our year in office, before handing over the chains of office, “most likely” to be to my Deputy and very good friend, Councillor Paul Fellows, we are attending/receiving a whole host of invitations to Civic functions and events.
That’s it for this month - take care, one and all.
We were kindly invited back for a second time, by Paul Flight, to the Bourne Veterans Breakfast Club’s first anniversary, where 56 members thoroughly enjoyed a superb breakfast at the Sugar Mill. Well done to Paul for getting this group off the ground a year ago and to all the many members and helpers - a truly great group, fantastic camaraderie, warmth and very welcoming, with some amazing characters. 34

April also saw us have the pleasure of joining the local branch of the Royal British Legion for their annual dinner at the Bourne Corn Exchange. We also attended the annual St George’s Day Parade with the District Scouts, along with other Civic heads and dignitaries. We ended the month by supporting the launch night of “Bourne in Business” (formally Bourne Business Chamber), and good luck to everyone involved. Finally, we were kindly invited by the Right Worshipful Mayor of Boston to attend the annual Proclamation Ceremony for the Boston May Fair. Indeed a busy end to what has been a fabulous year for us both.

Schools
Witham Hall School (Witham-on-the-Hill, near Bourne) Locally, regionally and nationally, Witham Hall continues to enhance its standing as a leading coeducational day and boarding Preparatory School. The school has seen a 10% growth in numbers over recent years and further expansion, noticeably within the Pre-Prep, will shortly be facilitated by a significant development programme, headed by the opening of a state-of-the-art Sports Centre, incorporating Sports Hall, Dance/Drama studio, Audio-visual room, Fitness Suite and extensive changing facilities.
Providing high class, all-round education from the age of 4 to 13, the school delights in the fact that its catchment starts within the village itself, and extends across six counties. A number of children commute daily, but the provision of a thriving boarding community makes a Witham education increasingly feasible for children living further away. Flexibility abounds, with children (from Year 4) able to board between one and five nights per week. Oundle, Oakham, Uppingham, Repton, Rugby, Stamford and Stowe are the most popular destinations for Witham children at the age of thirteen, but some go further afield, including to Eton. Scholarship success is outstanding - a cohort of thirty-two pupils gained a record-breaking nineteen awards to their chosen senior schools in 2016. Awards across all disciplines – Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport – highlights the breadth of opportunity the school has at the heart of its aims. Engagement with the local community is of great importance, with a number of local primary schools benefitting from the sharing of facilities and teaching
expertise on a weekly basis. Coupled with strong links with the village and church, the school also plays host to a range of local sporting clubs, together with age-group county cricket for both Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. Overseas, the school has an exciting and exclusive partnership with a community in Northern Cambodia. Led by their own initiative, pupils raised £16,000 to build a school in Kiri Bah Ler, and their annual fundraising efforts continue to train teachers and sustain the facility. Two Witham staff visited Kiri Bah Ler this Easter, establishing and developing sustainable relationships to greatly benefit the community, and at the same time enhancing the future opportunities, experiences and understanding of Witham children. A Pre-Prep Open Morning on Saturday May 6th provides an ideal opportunity to both see and hear about the extended provision that the new facilities will offer. National award-winning Headmaster, Charles Welch, and his wife Jo, together with their staff, will be delighted to welcome you. Further details are available from Mrs Claire Paylor, the Headmaster’s PA.

Summer’s on the Way
by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
I
’ve done my fair share of travelling, but I still think you can’t beat England when the weather is right … but it is so unpredictable. An unexpected, unseasonal bout of warm weather can see us squeezing into our shorts and exposing our “milk bottle legs” for a week or two, only to have them wrapped back up in woolly tights and baggy sweaters a day or so later. For many of us, our first outing of last year’s summer wardrobe can be a bit daunting. Those few pounds of extra winter padding, exposed against a paler skin, can leave a lot to be desired. Colours that suit us in the sunshine don’t always look as appealing after the dark winter nights. So, how do you minimise the damage, and make the most of the sunshine when it arrives, without buying a new wardrobe and burning yourself to a frazzle in the short window you have to enjoy the sunshine? Firstly, try to resist the temptation of shopping for the next size up. An uncomfortable waistband is a great reminder not to over-indulge at the barbecues. Root out a nice loose top to cover the bulges, whilst you drink
plenty of water, get more active and eat fresh, healthy summer foods. The average inch-loss in our ladies gym programme is eight inches in six weeks, so you can make a difference really quickly with the right advice and help. Second, fake tanning products can be your best friend at this time of year. We absolutely love “Fake Bake Flawless Gold Serum”. This contains coconut oil, and is really hydrating on the skin, with the faint smell of nothing but coconut. It is completely organic with no parabens, and works with your natural skin tone to give an extremely natural sun-kissed glow. No stickiness or streaks! The therapists at Renu are happy to advise you on this. Lastly, if we do get a heatwave, please remember your sunscreen. Whilst a little sun and precious vitamin D is good for us, too much exposure is dangerous. If you would like advice on the best tanning product for your skin, or how to start our gym programme, please speak to our team. We will be happy to help.

Anger, the Destroyer
by Caroline Mentzel, Behaviour management consultant, helpucope ltd
‘For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.’ - Ralph Waldo Emerson
A
nger is one of the most destructive forces we possess, and many people readily display anger at the slightest opportunity. Whilst there is nothing wrong with anger as a release valve, the resulting consequences can cause much distress. Indeed, for some people, the only feeling they seem to express is anger, whilst suppressing other emotions. It is possible to train ourselves to redirect our anger more appropriately, but first we need to identify what is creating our anger.
Take a long, deep breath and feel your diaphragm inflate.
Is it an expression of dissatisfaction, pent-up frustration, reluctance to talk or to acknowledge our feelings?
Take a normal breath.
We can show these emotions in other ways, without anger, and thus realise how much better we feel. Physical activity is an effective way to use up that excess adrenalin and work the anger out of our system. Try some fast running on the spot, brisk skipping, or punching it out of a pillow or mattress, some press-ups, or digging the garden. Learn to recognise the signs that anger is building up. Do you feel hot and clammy; do you “get butterflies”; or does your breathing pattern alter? As soon as you feel yourself becoming agitated, it’s time for some selfcontrol strategies.
Begin with the Three Breaths Calming Strategy
As you gently breathe out, say slowly in a quiet voice... “I FEEL CALM”
Take another long, deep breath and feel your diaphragm inflate. As you gently breathe out, say slowly in a low voice... “I AM IN CONTROL” Take a normal breath. Take another long, deep breath and feel your diaphragm inflate. As you gently breathe out, say slowly in a low voice... “I AM TOTALLY RELAXED” For maximum effect, practise frequently, thus training your body and mind to respond to this as a calming trigger, whenever you feel stressed, tense, irritated, under pressure, anxious, or even to help you sleep. If you require confidential support to manage anger, contact info@helpucope.com or tel. 07958 737 252.

Health
Hypertension
- often referred to simply as “high blood pressure”, affects countless people and hinders their daily lives What is high blood pressure? Your blood pressure is a measure of the pressure in your arteries, as your heart pumps blood around your body. It naturally changes throughout the day, depending on your emotional state and physical activity levels, but when it stays consistently too high over time, it is known as high blood pressure. It doesn’t necessarily show up in symptoms, but can cause long-term complications, nonetheless, through a narrowing of the blood vessels. Many factors to do with your lifestyle may contribute to primary hypertension. These include smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and your diet. Stress and anxiety can also play a part, leading to emotional, psychological and physical problems, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. High blood pressure can affect anyone at any age, so regular medical check-ups are important. High blood pressure accounts for 20-25% of all deaths worldwide and affects approximately one in three people worldwide. That’s over 16 million people in the UK. Unfortunately, in 90% of cases of high blood pressure (primary hypertension), there is no single clear cause, which means doctors can only work to manage the symptoms, as they do not have the time or resources to address the underlying emotional and lifestyle issues. For many people, this means a lifetime of medication, constant uncertainty and worry about their future. How can hypnotherapy help with high blood pressure? Hypnotherapy can help you tackle the most common emotional
and lifestyle factors that contribute to high blood pressure. Hypnotherapy helps by providing you with the skills and strategies to cope better with stressful anxious situations, helping you to develop a more relaxed attitude towards life. Hypnotherapy can also help you to find the motivation to give up smoking, reduce excess weight, and improve your fitness levels, and to eat a healthier diet. Solution focused hypnotherapy can help over 90% of people diagnosed with hypertension to get it under control and even significantly reduce it. As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist, I will work with you to identify and address the contributory emotional and lifestyle factors that are unique to you. Using solution focused hypnotherapy, trance, cognitive behavioural therapy and neurolinguistic programming, we will work together to help you to lower your blood pressure, or even return it to normal levels. We will work in conjunction with your GP to help you back to better health.
If you would like to book an appointment or find out more about hypnotherapy, contact Christine on: 0780 9690 964 or contact@ beardwoodhypnotherapy. co.uk

Are Your Feet Ready for the Summer? by Rachael Baker
T
his month, Rachael Baker, one of two registered chiropodists / podiatrists at the Wellhead Practice, explains some common, everyday foot conditions. Rachael brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the practice, having worked in the NHS and private practice in this field for nearly forty years. Q: Rachael, what is one of the more everyday conditions you help with?
practitioners here. My colleague, Matthew Philips, joins me and we perform the procedure together.
A: Simple nail cutting. Many patients really struggle to trim their own nails. This can be due to reduced flexibility, (preventing patients from reaching their feet), or perhaps due to osteoarthritis of the hands, making it hard to hold nail clippers. Even inadequate eyesight can pose a problem. Here, we offer a shorter, dedicated nail cutting appointment (ÂŁ22) which is ideal if your feet are generally in good condition, and you only need a trim.
These are just a few of the conditions our chiropodists can help you with. If you have any foot concerns, please ring us and our receptionists can arrange an appointment or some practitioner advice. Since starting the practice in 2012, we have gradually expanded our chiropody clinics and now offer appointments four days per week, including evenings and Saturday mornings too.
Q: What else do you commonly see? A: Thick nails. Trauma to the nail bed, perhaps from dropping something onto the toe or even poorly fitting shoes, can cause these. Treatment involves reducing the thickness, using the nail drill and offering advice on things like footwear, to help reduce recurrence. Fungal nails. These affect one or many nails with a discoloured and thickened appearance and are often crumbly in texture. Treatment is by applying a topical lacquer to the nail or via oral medication. As the fungus has to grow out of the nail, treatment can take over twelve months. Involuted nails. These curve round and press into the sides of your toe. The temptation is often to cut down the sides but this can lead to in-growing nails. I advise letting the nails grow and to clear out the edge of the nail with an old tooth brush using moisturising cream along the sides. A build-up of dead skin, soap, sock fluff etc. can put extra pressure on the nail, causing pain. In-growing toe nails. Incorrect nail cutting, direct injury or picking at toe nails can lead to a spike of nail to grow into the flesh of the toe. Treatment ranges from cutting the nail correctly and removing the spike, to removal of the side or whole nail with surgery, under local anaesthetic. Q: Is the surgery something you can do at the clinic? A: Yes, this is something we can do in-house, as there are two

In the Hot Seat
IN THE HOT SEAT Following in the footsteps of the popular Nelly Jacobs, (not just as Bourne’s Town Clerk, but also as a “victim” in this monthly “Hot Seat” feature) is Mr Ian Sismey. Twenty-five years of his working life have been spent in Bourne, so this Peterborian can almost claim Brunnian status, after many years also working for Thomas Cook, EMAP National Publications and Business Research agency, Euromonitor PLC, in London. Earlier this year, Ian married Julie and “inherited two fantastic grown-up kids, Tom and Sophie”, having already three of his own, Nathan, Ryan and Lauren. In his earlier life, hockey was a keen passion, with Ian representing many local sides and getting to play at district and county level.
Ian Sismey
Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? I was born in Peterborough and, with four brothers, it was a very busy and noisy household indeed! My favourite childhood memory was helping my grandfather who was a shepherd on the Fitzwilliam estate, between Castor and Peterborough.
The second would be President Donald Trump, just to see what he is like face-to-face, outside of the theatre of American politics.
Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? There have been many people in my life that have had a great influence on me, but I must mention two. The first is Nelly Jacobs who took me under her wing as her Deputy and made me realise what an honour it was to serve the people of Bourne. The second has to be my wonderful wife Julie, who has stuck by me through some very distressing times. Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? This is an easy one. The first has to be Arsenal F.C.

legend, Thierry Henry. Scoring 228 goals for Arsenal, he had exquisite technique, searing pace and surprising strength.
Bourne
How would you describe yourself in only five words? Conscientious, humble, approachable, caring and, most of all, happy. If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why? The only thing I would change about Bourne is the ability to control the town’s future. So much of what we can and can’t do is in the hands of people who have little or no knowledge of the town. What advice would you give to a “sixteen-yearold you”? Don’t be afraid to ask for help – it doesn’t make you appear to be weak.

Discovering . . . Queen’s Bridge
T
he bridge over the Bourne Eau as it runs through Eastgate is known as Queen’s Bridge which suggests that it marks an important occasion connected with the sovereign but as records show that it existed in 1856 this rules out her Golden and Diamond Jubilees and was probably built as a commemoration of her accession or wedding in 1837-38 although the local newspapers did not report either on its construction or naming on those occasions. However, this assumption would seem to be correct because a public notice which appeared on Friday 8th April 1842 referred to land situated in Eastgate about to be sold at auction as being “opposite the New Bridge”. There is evidence that there had been a ford or crossing at this point since the earliest times and when the river was cleaned out in October 1898, one section was found to be paved with stones, ancient and well laid and believed to date from Roman times. The bank below the bridge was once a slope to provide access for horses and carts, allowing the animals to drink and the wagons to be washed. Queen’s Bridge became a central feature of the Eastgate district and can be seen in many old photographs from earlier times. One of our ancient traditions, the White Bread Meadow auction, is still held there annually and

there were also periodic auctions of grazing rights on pasture land in the nearby fens. It was also the centre for many public occasions, outdoor meetings and other gatherings, while children played along the nearby riverside and small boys netted newts and fished for minnows. In 1865, there were concerns about public health because the town’s sewage was emptied into the river at this point so creating a serious nuisance which was expected to exacerbate with the introduction of more domestic water closets around the town. The original bridge was most likely made of wood and was replaced around 1880 with a sturdily built structure of rough concrete and strong enough to withstand the weight of horse-drawn traffic but in later years, constant use by cars and lorries took their toll and the bridge was soon showing signs of deterioration. The official weight capacity of 7.5 tonnes was below the European directive of a 40 tonne limit and so Lincolnshire County Council, the highways authority, decided in 2013 that its days were numbered and plans were drawn up to replace it during the summer months with the modern brick-built bridge that we see today. Police Patrol
Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Abstracting Electricity - What’s all that about then? by Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley
T
he final offence I wish to consider around the Theft Act is that of abstracting electricity. Section 13 of the Theft Act 1968 made dishonestly abstracting electricity a specific offence. This was necessary because electricity did not come within the definition of property in the Act and could not therefore be ‘stolen’. One of the most common situations in which police will deal with this offence is when cannabis is grown in a hydroponics set-up. The heat and light needed to grow cannabis requires a large amount of electricity, which clearly would cost money. In these situations, the electricity meter is often by-passed to reduce the costs for the “would-be herbalist”. The definition of the offence is relatively simple and says, “A person who dishonestly uses without due authority, or dishonestly causes to be wasted or diverted, any electricity commits an offence.” Electricity does not have to be mains electricity; it could be electricity from a battery in a torch, car, etc. A “use” implies a consumption of electricity that would not have occurred without the act of the accused. For example, a tramp might lawfully warm himself on an electric fire that someone else has left on, but he commits the offence if he switches the fire on himself.
“Without due authority” means without proper authorisation. As well as the examples above, this could include Squatters who use electricity with no intention of paying for it. An employee who used his employer’s electrically powered machinery to make things for his own use. A person who takes a pedestrian controlled electric vehicle such as a milk float (as this cannot be classed as a conveyance). The electricity does not need to be used for the benefit of any person. Wasting it without any authority out of mischief, depending on the circumstances, will make the offence complete. The offence carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison on indictment (Crown Court). When electricity meters are found to be by-passed, police will work closely with the utility company involved to make the supply safe initially, and then to investigate. To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Crimestoppers 0800 555 111

In 2006, Ivan Fuller decided to launch a new networking club in Bourne called the Bourne Business Club. For several years, this ran successfully with help from Norman Stroud. Ivan decided to pass control onto John Lawrence (who used to own Deeping Travel) and he merged the Bourne Business Club with The Bourne Trade and Commerce group. The new, re-launched group became The Bourne Business Chamber. Unfortunately, John’s business had to close and he then passed control onto Tim Armstrong, Kevin Hicks and Paul Ross. Kevin Hicks was Chairman for just over a year and was succeeded in 2011 by Paul Ross, who has remained Chairman ever since, very ably assisted by Joanne Dolby and Taff Lovesey.
The club, affectionately known as “The Other B.B.C.”, has run very well and membership has soared to eighty, which is most encouraging for a small town like Bourne. However, following much discussion, and with there being such innovative minds around, it was decided that a re-vamp was due. Claire Saberton suggested the club should be called “Bourne in Business”. A new committee now consists of Peter Jackson, Mark Darby, Claire Saberton, Joanne Dolby and Paul Ross, whilst the website, www.bournebusiness.co.uk , will continue to be maintained by Taff Lovesey. The Aims and Objectives of Bourne in Business are to promote Bourne in terms of trade and commerce, and to provide a business platform for local entrepreneurs and professionals to discuss their business issues, share ideas and grow their businesses. Monthly meetings for members and local business leaders will provide an informal forum for discussion and networking. The launch was scheduled for Thursday April 27th, and details of that will appear in the June issue of “Discovering Bourne”. If, in the meantime, anyone seeks further information on how to become involved, please visit the website, www. bournebusiness.co.uk .

How Many Times Do I Have to Tell You!!! The number of cohabiting couples who face problems when they separate is increasing. This is because increasing numbers of people cohabit, rather than marry, but as previously stated in this column and elsewhere, “THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SAME LEGAL RIGHTS AS THEIR MARRIED COUNTERPARTS”.

YouGov has recently completed a survey of more than 1,000 cohabiting couples across the UK. 35% either believe they have the same rights as married couples, or didn’t know. 76% had not heard of cohabitation agreements and only 2% had a cohabitation agreement in place. 35% were unaware if the property they owned together was either beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common. The solicitor who conveyed the Call us on 01778 772 595 or 07599 996 640 house into your joint names when you bought it should have gone through the different options with you and created a trust deed if required. Despite the huge implications of the outcomes of the different property ownership structures, the survey revealed that only 33% were given professional advice when purchasing their current home. This could make the difference in terms of thousands of pounds to either one of you, if the relationship breaks down. Whatever your circumstances, if you are living together, and especially if you have children, a cohabitation agreement is essential as an insurance against a possible split. It would be wise to speak to a family specialist about this straight away.

Your Finances
Plenty of Life in Death and Taxes
by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd
F
ew would argue these days about the growing need for inheritance tax planning. The latest figures from H.M. Revenue and Customs (HMRC) find the Government took almost £4.7 billion in inheritance tax in the 2015/16 tax year. That’s the highest figure for inheritance receipts since the current system was introduced in 1986. It is no longer a tax that targets only the very wealthy, either. The nil-rate band may have been frozen at its current level of £325,000 since April 2009, but the average price of a UK property has risen 33% over the same period. With more people’s wealth invested in their property, it’s little wonder the Office for Budget Responsibility has found that the number of families paying inheritance tax is at a thirty-five year high, and 45,100 bereaved families are expected to face an inheritance tax bill in the 2016–17 tax year. The estate we’re in Acknowledging the problem faced by a large number of homeowners, the Government introduced a new inheritance tax allowance in last year’s Budget. The ‘residence nil-rate band’ can be claimed by the estates of people who die after 6 April 2017, and it will start at £100,000 per person – increasing by £25,000 every April until 2020, when the £175,000 maximum will be reached. From April 2021, it will increase by inflation every year. Advice on estate planning is, perhaps unsurprisingly, rather popular. According to a recent survey from insurers Prudential, 52% of advisers expect demand for inheritance tax advice to rise over the next twelve months. And there are a number of options that advisers can consider for their clients.
Trusts and gifting People usually set up trusts as a way to make sure assets are kept in the family over generations. They can be tailored to personal wishes too, which gives them much greater control over where their money goes. However, assets settled into certain types of trusts that are set up during a person’s lifetime also take seven years before becoming exempt from inheritance tax. So, if the client dies before then, the amounts settled into trust will be included in their estate, and inheritance tax will be payable if the estate is valued at more than the nil-rate band. There are other charges to consider too, which can make trusts an expensive option and means they may not appeal to everyone. Another option is to make gifts to reduce an estate’s value. There’s a modest annual gifting allowance of £3,000, meaning that cumulative gifts of up to £3,000, made over the course of the year, will immediately be exempt from inheritance tax. What’s more, if the full £3,000 annual exemption isn’t used in one year, the remainder, or ‘carry over’, can be used the following year – although it can’t be carried over beyond one year.

The Technology Site
Install a wireless mesh network for improved Wi-Fi coverage at home or in the office by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC
M
esh wi-fi is beginning to take off with many of the networking companies releasing new mesh networks (802.11s). This method of networking relies on multiple wireless devices being used together in a grid, or mesh, coverage pattern to provide reliable and high performance wireless networks. This can be of benefit where the home, or office, suffers from poor wireless zones due to distance or environment. By linking the matched devices in a mesh network, wireless signals can reach to those dim and dark wireless corners of the home. Most of the main network device manufacturers have released their own versions including this new one from BT called BT Whole Home Wi-Fi, retailing at around £300. For many homes, this level of coverage will be unnecessary but for those living in larger homes, or older homes with thick, solid walls, mesh technology could be a good direction to take
to address Wi-Fi coverage around the house (or office). The ‘first’ device connects to the main router, and then an app
(Android or iOS) is used to help set up the two ‘sister’ devices to map out your mesh network. Everything is handled in a userfriendly manner. Current tests show that these networks are easier to configure than a home plug adapter network, more reliable and offer better across device performance. Apart from providing a reliable Wi-Fi network, many of the devices also provide a wired connection (handy for connecting static PCs, TVs, set top boxes and such like).

Pets and Vets
“Phoebe” - (Vets’ pets need vets too!) by Lionel Smith
O
n February 23rd, when “Storm Doris” was heading our way, we went to feed our horses early, so we could avoid much of the bad weather. While we were out, my son, who was at home, rang to say there was something wrong with our chihuahua dog, Phoebe. He said one of her eyes was twice its normal size and very red. We raced back home, hoping that my son was exaggerating, and that this was just a sore eye and not what I feared it might be. When I got home, I could see immediately that she had prolapsed her eye (the eye had come out of its socket) and that she had been rubbing at it. This can happen in this breed with a bang to the head, whilst she had been playing with one of our other dogs.
My experience here is relatively minor, in that the outcome is that we now have a one-eyed dog, but one who can still live her life quite normally. This was a difficult experience for me in that it combined the stresses involved in dealing with an emergency, with the trauma of seeing my own pet injured, a situation I am hoping never to have to repeat.
We took her to our surgery in Bourne where I immediately gave her an anaesthetic and assessed her eye. It is normally possible to replace the eye, if there is immediate surgical intervention. Sometimes to achieve this, you have to take some fluid out of the eye and collapse it temporarily to help replace it. I was unable to do this, however, as she had bled into the eye, so I had to make the decision to remove it. Her anaesthetic was unstable during this whole process. As vets, we are often so busy just dealing with the emergency in front of us, that we either forget, or just haven’t experienced, the raw trauma involved in these situations for the owners. There is the pure horror of seeing your much-loved pet severely damaged and the fear of what will happen next. What I also find frightening is how quickly these accidents happen and that things are never the same afterwards. Your day starts off in its normal fashion and then, suddenly, everything is so different.

Too Many Potholes by Tom Ingram
I
reported a couple of years ago about a pothole crisis in Grantham, due to the council under-funding maintenance and repairs of potholes. The issue is now escalating into a national problem, despite a £6 billion commitment from the DfT to English councils. Even a boost of £50 million a year is proving not to be effective in maintaining a road network that is deteriorating faster than it can be repaired. The RAC have reported a 24% rise in pothole-related breakdowns, compared to figures in 2015. The consequences are not trivial. Damage to wheels and suspension is common but, of greater concern, is the potential for injuries to motorcyclists and cyclists. This has serious implications for road safety. Navigating around potholes when travelling at less than 30 mph in town roads can be tricky enough when you also
factor in all the additional hazards that come with town driving. But on the fastermoving roads like our A15, A16, A17 and A52, attempting to dodge potholes at say 50mph, while oncoming traffic is approaching you at similar speeds, really is a danger. There are reports from the AA that concerned motorists are taking it upon themselves to create a network of volunteers who are attempting to deal with this problem by independently making repairs, rather than wait for the local authority. I would be interested to know if this has affected you at all on your travels around Bourne and Deeping. Are there particular locations that you know of, and what response have you received when reporting them? Feel free to e-mail me on info@BIGTOM.org.uk

DIRECTorY Business FEATURE OF THE MONTH...
THE OFFICE ANGEL Need Secretarial/Admin/Office Support?
Wanting to work but still be able to be a mother, I came up with the idea of freelancing my services to help businesses on an ad hoc basis. I have had plenty of secretarial experience within different roles and have dealt with people through many industries and areas of life, giving me great interpersonal skills. My character is that of a fun loving, bubbly person, with a great sense of humour. I love dealing with people and enjoy working as part of a team, as well as on my own. I am a well-spoken lady and present myself in a professional manner. I am a great organiser... and also make a great cup of tea or coffee!
