CELEBRATING 11 YEARS
Introduction
Welcome to Your August Issue.
It’s August, which means only one thing – another school year is over, and the children (and teachers!) are enjoying their well-earned, six-week break. To all the parents reading, I’ll let you decide whether or not that’s a good thing! One way to help fill those long days this month will be to join the ever-popular treasure hunt in this month’s issue, for which the prize is an impressive £100. Our “Events and Gigs Guide” on page 44 is full of great ideas too, along with this month’s “School’s Out” section on page 36. Our feature on The Craft Centre on page 32 could give you even more great ideas on how to keep those little voices from bleating, “I’m bored!” A reminder, finally, to vote in our Top Dog of 2017 competition, by August 11th.

There’s little doubt that this part of the world is increasingly well catered for, in keeping young people occupied during their holidays. Our feature on the ancient Bowthorpe Oak on page 34 brought back vividly how, for some of us, climbing in such trees and spending hours, tracking and den-building in Bourne Woods would have been as far as our “summer fun activities” went! Times change, and I’ve recently returned from Canada’s fabulous west coast, with not only enough memories to last a lifetime, but with some amusing snippets, gleaned along the way. These include the Vancouver dentist, advertising “No Hurt Fillings”, and the neighbouring bar, trading as “Wishfull Drinking”! Enjoy the holiday, and enjoy the read!

“It Takes Two” - How Renu Can Help You! by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
W
e know the saying that goes, “Less is more”, but let’s be honest. Sometimes, two is just plain better than one. When it comes to working out, having a friend along for the ride can be beneficial. You can get a serious workout without being serious – it’s okay to have fun. In fact, the more fun your workouts are, the more you’re going to look forward to, and be committed to them over the long-term. There’s absolutely no doubt that the right friend to exercise with can make your workouts more fun. Being able to laugh, encourage and motivate will make them much more enjoyable. Here are some of the benefits of working out with a friend:
Fewer skipped workouts Scheduling a gym session with a friend helps hold you accountable for getting your workout in. Meeting someone to exercise with not only motivates you to show up, but to work hard as well. Push yourself further Exercising with another person pushes you to do your workout and do it to the best of your ability. A bit of
friendly banter and encouragement can mean you get a little bit more out of your exercise session. Try new exercises Going to the gym with a friend is the perfect time to try out new exercises or classes. When trying something new, your friend will provide a confidence boost and keep your workouts interesting. At Renu, you can try up to nineteen classes a week, as part of your membership. Time Flies “Time flies when you’re having fun!”… or at least when you are distracted. Having someone to chat with lets you focus on something other than just your workout, making the time go by faster. Recover together Socialising can often be a reason you may get out of your exercise routine. A friend who’s worked up a sweat with you is likely to want to join you for a healthy post-exercise meal or snack, so you get the best of both worlds! If you would like a free trial, for either you or your friend, please call us on 01778 423923

Hypnotherapy for Insomnia and Sleep Disorders by Dr Jacqueline Preston
S
leep allows our brain to process the information collected throughout the day. It plays a vital role in both our physical and mental health because sleep gives our body the opportunity to heal and repair itself. Unfortunately though, insomnia is surprisingly common, affecting men and women of all ages, and is often ignored or just passed off as an ‘age thing’!
There are two main categories of insomnia – temporary and persistent.
the process of breaking the associated negative thought patterns, which have allowed the problem to persist, can start.
Temporary Insomnia usually lasts between one night and three to four weeks. Also within this category is ‘Intermittent Insomnia’, (where sleeping problems are experienced periodically over months or years), and ‘Acute Insomnia’, (where a brief episode of difficulty sleeping is brought on by a stressful life event, for example).
For some people, physical or mental tension, the stresses and strains of everyday life, or accumulative stress can make sleeping difficult. As hypnotherapy combines the use of very deep relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation to help reduce tension, you will be encouraged to develop a new sleep routine and learn new positive behavioural patterns. This will improve your sleep hygiene and reduce overall evening and night-time stress.
Persistent Insomnia (a.k.a. Chronic Insomnia) is where the problem persists almost nightly for at least four weeks or more. When suffering from insomnia for a long period of time (which is not caused by the side effects of prescribed medication, or an underlying medical condition), the patterns of sleep disturbances can become embedded in our subconscious. As a hypnotherapist, through specifically focused suggestions made to a client whilst under hypnosis, it is possible to effectively communicate with your subconscious mind and establish the root cause behind the sleeplessness. Once the cause is understood,
The number of hypnotherapy sessions required to help you overcome insomnia varies from person to person, and greatly depends on your individual circumstances. Some people only need one session, while others may require deeper work over several sessions. Deciding to try hypnotherapy in the first place is not the easiest decision for most. Therefore, to help with this, I always speak to any prospective client over the telephone first to discuss their personal situation. This provides them with the opportunity to ask me any questions and also determines whether hypnotherapy is the most suitable choice, and the best way forward to a positive outcome. If you would like to know more, or discuss a particular concern of yours with Dr Jacqueline Preston in the strictest confidence, then please contact the Wellhead Practice. Please note: If you suspect you may be suffering from insomnia, please consult your GP in the first instance so any medical or health condition that may be causing your sleeplessness may be ruled out.

Phobias
- Get your emotions back in control and feel free to do all the things you want to do! There are many phobias that we can suffer from, the most common being fear of spiders, heights, public spaces and flying. The intense fear we feel means we spend a lot of time avoiding certain things or situations, and our world becomes smaller and smaller, as we stop enjoying doing some of the things we used to do. A phobia is defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer is compelled to go to great lengths to avoid certain situations. The fear is typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational. So what do you do? Run, freeze, feel sick or simply want to cry? There are, in the main, two types of phobias. There is the simple phobia where a person reacts negatively when they come into contact with the thing that causes fear, i.e. dentists, needles, flying or spiders. Then there is the complex phobia which causes fear and anxiety continually. One example is Emetophobia - a fear of being sick, and considered to be one of the most common phobias in the world. It can affect the sufferer in ways such as not wanting to collect their children from school in case that child is feeling ill, or maybe even putting off becoming pregnant because of the fear of sickness or even not having medical treatments. Another complex phobia is Social phobia, a fear of social situations, such as weddings, public speaking or simply going out to dinner with people - even if they’re friends! Frequently, people with a social phobia have a fear of embarrassing themselves or of being humiliated in public. The human mind is an amazing thing, undoubtedly the most powerful and resourceful problem-solving device in the known
universe. However, our minds have developed as part of an evolutionary process, and your mind contains powerful tools for learning and dealing with danger. In our modern lives, where these ‘fight or flight’ responses are generally less useful, strong behavioural responses or fears can nevertheless be set up. It is usually when we are stressed or anxious that these primitive parts of the brain can sometimes overreact and set up patterns of fear or thought that you find difficult or impossible to control. The good news is that your brain has an ability to learn and change; in fact, you are constantly learning. Changing and learning new habits such as being more relaxed and calm can help overcome simple phobias very quickly. Now here’s an interesting fact - habits exist on the same subconscious level as phobias, and hypnosis helps create new habits or patterns of behaviour. The basic feature of any phobia is a conflict between the conscious and subconscious. Hypnotherapy communicates with the subconscious, filtering through how the client wants to be, rather than how they currently are. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps with all these different types of phobias, allowing you to feel free to live a normal life again. Maybe it’s time for change?

Matters Bourne in Bloom 2017 Bourne had lots to shout about when the judges for this year’s competition were driven around the town. As well as floral displays in the town centre, the organisers were proud to ‘dig deep’ into what goes on all year round in Bourne. They were able to see what an asset to the town the Abbey Lawns and the Well Head Gardens are, for which many thanks and congratulations to Andy, Hayley and Bourne United Charities. They were also impressed with the work done by Peter and Elsea Park for their work done on the ‘Nature Reserve’, beside Raymond Mays Way. If you’ve never been, go and have a walk there! The children at Westfield Academy shone, as they showed off their horticultural knowledge in their very own designated ‘garden area’. The

garden is about to be home to some chickens, as part of a “business project”, which they are managing themselves. Early ordering for eggs is well advised! As always, a trip to the allotments underlined how intrinsic ‘growing your own’ is. Furthermore, there have been so many positive comments about “George’s giraffes” decorating the roundabout on the A15 that we surely have to make it a permanent feature! Bourne Academy have also provided wicker sculptures for the roundabout at the bottom of Stamford Hill. Looking forward to the judges’ deliberations but also looking to the

Bourne Academy Video Dedicated to Popular Teacher The latest Bourne Academy summer video has gone live on Facebook and had attracted 50,000 views within the first 24 hours of being uploaded. This year’s entry, entitled ‘Bourne Academy’s Movie Medley 2017’, is a parody of lots of different films, including ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Star Wars’. Set to songs from the movies, it features recreations of famous scenes and lots of silliness! It was shown to the students at the end of term assembly on
the last day of the summer term, to a great reception. The video is dedicated to Mr. Wade, a teacher from the school, who sadly passed away in March this year.
The annual video has become a tradition at the school over the past few years with this being the fourth one produced. Mr. Swinn, a Drama/Music teacher, who created the video, said, “It was a blast making the video this year. The quality has got a lot better since I made the first one and the staff really get into their roles, especially Mr. Kettle as Darth Vader! It wouldn’t have turned out as good as it did without the support of the Performing Arts Department, and my
brother Matt who did all the special effects. The problem is now going to be what we do next year!” Mrs. Parker, Head of Performing Arts, said, “The video has become an annual event, with more and more staff wanting to take part. It’s great to show the team ethos at Bourne Academy and it is always fun watching the students’ reactions. This year’s video is the best yet, and it was especially important as we wanted to dedicate it to Mr. Wade, who always supported the school and the Performing Arts Department.” If you haven’t seen it yet, then check it out on the school’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ bourneacademy
Re-birth – Bourne Schools Arts Collaboration Wednesday July 19th saw the official opening of the ambitious project that is aimed to breathe new life into the historic Bourne Town Hall, organised by local artist Helen Graham, Rebecca Beavis Arts Director of Bourne Westfield Primary Academy and Lucy Lawson teacher at Bourne Academy. mission will be to raise the funds to restore, convert and eventually run the building for the community, for the celebration and enjoyment of the Arts.
It is hoped that this schools’ event is just the beginning of the opportunities for collaboration across all sectors of the community, using art to bring people together.
In June, the Charity Commission granted permission for the Town Hall to be used as an Arts Centre, based on the vision proposed by the Town Hall steering group last year. A new Charity is currently being formed with Trustees from Bourne whose A U GUS T 2 017

Handson Massage and Performance Coaching Keith Read’s experience as an athlete, competing at national level, gives him an appreciation of the demands put upon an athlete to fit training around other commitments. Having had two hip replacements, he also has a good understanding of the frustration that athletes feel when unable to train due to injuries. Along with massage and ultrasound treatment to speed up the healing process, Keith also uses Kinesiology Tape to give support to injured areas to allow an athlete to carry on training. When this is not possible, Keith will work with the athlete to find alternative types of exercise, to reduce the loss of performance whilst recovering. Regular clients include triathletes and archers who compete on the international stage. When working with runners, Keith’s approach is the same, whether they are a beginner or an experienced runner. He starts by looking at their running style; this can be done with video analysis, looking at the whole body for areas requiring improvement. By improving the runner’s style, they become more efficient, allowing them to run further and faster, without using more energy. This is usually done with a combination of running drills, strength training, coordination work and stretching. The most common problems corrected are leaning forward from the hips and allowing the arms to cross in front of the body when running.

Swap the British Winter for the New Zealand Summer!
Clare Lockett
Travel Counsellor
There’s no better time of the year to visit New Zealand than in the months between January and April, when the country is basking in glorious summer and autumn sunshine. Whether you fancy soaking up some summer sun on one of the many glorious beaches, heading into the mountains or enjoying one of the many wine and food festivals on at this time of year, there is so much to see and to do. Here is a small selection of ideas that you could explore in this stunning country.
The Hobbit New Zealand lays claim to the breath-taking and iconic landscapes that Frodo and Sam trekked across in “The Lord of the Rings”, and its epic three-part prequel, “The Hobbit”. There really is no better time to discover a slice of Middle Earth for yourself. In Matamata, nestled in the heart of the North Island’s Waikoto region, you’ll find The Shire, enveloped within the rolling hills and lush emerald grass of a picturesque, private sheep farm. The Shire has been permanently rebuilt for the filming of “The Hobbit”, so you can wander round the hobbit holes, The Green Dragon inn, mill, bridge and gardens. Daily tours operate from Rotorua, and last two hours. Nelson/Abel Tasman National Park Perched at the north-western tip of the South Island, Nelson is New Zealand’s sunniest region; its sun-drenched landscapes full of mountains for hiking, forests for exploring, and beaches for whiling away the long summer days. A visit to the country’s smallest and only coastal National Park, Abel Tasman, is a must-do activity during the summer. While in Tasman, why not stay at the luxurious Almyra

ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK
Lodge, set mid-way between Nelson and the Abel Tasman National Park? Located on the Kina Peninsula with an unspoilt beach only a minute’s walk away, and offering world-class accommodation in a spectacular setting, Almyra offers luxuriously appointed suites with private decks so you can relax and enjoy the views. Certainly a retreat not to be missed! The area is a prime spot for many outdoor activities, such as kayaking, walking and sailing, a highlight being the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. The calm clear waters of the Abel Tasman National Park make this an ideal spot for sea kayaking, with the 53km track, taking an easy three to five days to complete. The track passes through lush beach forest, expansive tidal estuaries and golden sandy beaches and is suitable for all levels of fitness. Seals and dolphins also frequent the area, and a highlight is visiting the seal colony on Tonga Island Marine Reserve, where seals will often frolic around your kayak (this island is not accessible by walkers). There is also a range of day tours available into the park – including scenic cruises, combination cruise/walk packages, sea kayaking or perhaps an overnight stay in one of the stunning beachfront lodges. Wineries While New Zealand has long been famed for its stunning, unspoilt landscapes, it also has international acclaim for its fine wines. AUGUST 2017

MILFORD SOUND
A visit to a cellar door is often more than just a wine tasting. Wineries make every effort to provide visitors with a truly memorable experience, with staff who have an extensive knowledge and passion for wine production. Many wineries also offer tasting platters, lunch or dinner or a five-course degustation menu. The Classic New Zealand Wine Trail is a 240-mile self-drive touring route that takes you through five of New Zealand’s most interesting and scenic regions. In the Hawkes Bay region, (known for its stunning reds, chardonnay and Art Deco architecture), you can spend a day cycling around nine of the region’s wineries, all within a leisurely eight mile cycle ride – great for serious wine lovers and no need to worry about who’s going to do the driving!
water rafting, zorbing and a host of other activities that’ll get your blood pumping, Queenstown is actually a great place to relax, exploring some of New Zealand’s most magical terrain, with majestic mountains and astoundingly clear lakes, and sampling its delicious cuisines. Milford Sound Just like no visit to New Zealand is complete without sampling the country’s wineries, you would be mad to miss an overnight Milford Sound cruise, taking you through the magnificent and dramatic landscape. Carved into existence by glaciers during the Ice Age, there might never be a more spectacular photo opportunity than cruising between the giant cliffs along a silent and pristine lake, the silence disturbed only by cascading waterfalls. An overnight cruise lets you experience this beauty in darkness – you’ll soon see why Rudyard Kipling described Milford Sound as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’. These are just some of the many reasons to swap our cold, dark and gloomy winter for a summer of exploration and majesty in New Zealand – contact me now to help you arrange your next adventure. QUEENSTOWN
With forty-three cellar doors to choose from in Marlborough, what better way to spend a long summer’s day then wandering around some of the region’s beautiful vineyards? Marlborough can lay claim to introducing Sauvignon Blanc to the world, putting New Zealand well and truly on the map as a wine producer. Queenstown is also home to over seventy-five wineries and is famous for its Pinot Noir, so once you’ve had enough of Marlborough’s Sauvignon Blanc, head down here to try the red. Queenstown Famously dubbed the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’, apart from its high adrenaline skydiving, bungee jumping, white-

Mayor
Words from the Mayor Councillor Paul Fellows
My grandchildren will find it difficult to believe that there are people older than me, but there are, and three such people showed me that you just have to keep going. Old age is not a place for the faint-hearted! Judi and I were privileged to visit Mrs. Kathleen Ewles on her 100th birthday. With her husband, she ran a butcher’s shop on North Street, very close to where Heron is today. She helped him make deliveries around the parish, as well as bringing up three children, all of whom were with her on her birthday and happy to share memories of Bourne. Kath herself was very aware of the day and, like many of her generation, completely unassuming. Lesson Number One: Life is not infinite; it’s a gift we must embrace. The second lesson came when Judi and I met true Bourne champions, Brenda and Jim Jones, as they were painting the railings beside the Abbey graveyard. They wire brushed and then painted them, finishing off with an ‘amazing gold top’. Jim needed to do a little welding to the gate and now they look brilliant. I’m sure no one asked them to do it. They just did it, just as they constantly pick up litter in and around the town and just as they give hours of their time to the Civic Society. They just do it. One ever-present fact is that Bourne has an outstanding number of groups and organisations who all seem to have a similar message: they need more people to get involved, either as volunteers or just to be involved. If you’ve ever thought about joining an organisation or just volunteering, please give it some consideration: Life is not infinite. Just do it.
In the last few weeks, representing Bourne, we have visited three of our five schools, four Garden Fetes, one Civic Ceremony, two ‘rest homes’, a Rotary Dinner, The Rose Fair in Wisbech and ‘Beating the Retreat’ at Belvoir Castle! We took the ‘Mayor’s Chair’ to Westfield School and Evie Lound’s ideas won her the opportunity to be my consort at the Lion’s Fun Day. I did another work experience at Elsea Park Centre, as stand-in caretaker, so please get in touch if you can look after me for a day! SKDC have published their Local Plan which includes proposed new housing off Cedar Drive and behind Beaufort Drive. They have planned a ‘road show’ event at the Corn Exchange on July 20th. Go, look and give an opinion. On August 1st, from late afternoon into the evening, Bourne Town Councillors will be available in the Corn Exchange for you to have the chance to give an opinion on this proposal which we will then collate for a whole town view to present to SKDC. Remember, my mayoral year can be followed on www.bournewithpride.com

Discovering . . . Water boreholes
- Rex Needle
P
ure water from underground iron-rich chalybeate springs played an important role in the local economy of Bourne in past times and the task of bringing it to the surface was one of engineering ingenuity involving the drilling of boreholes at various points around the locality. The product was marketed by several local companies and soon became world famous, resulting in a Royal Warrant being granted by Queen Victoria’s son, the Duke of Connaught, to R M Mills & Company which operated from premises in West Street. Boreholes provided water for public use and commercial undertakings such as that in 1891 which was sunk to supply the railway station based at the Red Hall where water was found at a depth of 85 feet. In the same year, an underground source was tapped to supply a new brickworks near Stamford Hill for construction work by the Midland Railway Company and the contractors found a plentiful supply at 81 ft 9 in, the average depth of borings in Bourne at that time being 95 ft. The deepest and most productive of all of Bourne’s boreholes was in the Austerby which was drilled during the spring of 1893 and acclaimed as being one of the most powerful springs in Britain. Despite difficulties during the drilling operations the shaft was successfully

sunk with a 2½ inch pipe that was sealed once supplies had been achieved and engineers reported that the new spring was of exceptional power and quality. Boring for new wells needed expert engineers, the best known in the Bourne area being John Elwes Noble of Thurlby who also had a reputation as a water diviner. He carried out drillings for many local authorities, industrial firms and private houses, and his company sent details of the strata and location of every bore they drilled to the Geological Society in London which assisted them in their compilation of the geological survey of England and Wales which survives to this day. Drilling operations continued well into the next century and by 1969, there were an estimated 130 artesian bores within the urban district of Bourne, supplying farms, factories and housing developments. However, all water in the Bourne area is now drawn out through boreholes administered solely by Anglian Water which supplies a much larger catchment area, often to the disadvantage of the town because both St Peter’s Pool and the Bourne Eau have been known to dry up during spells of drought in recent years. Carol’s Sewing Services
– Moved Premises…but not far! It’s very pleasing to hear of a local business moving in order to provide bigger and better premises for their customers. Almost three years ago, Carol Danylew left her established North Street shop in Bourne, to re-locate in Wherry’s Lane. Since then, business became brisker than ever, which is a sure sign that Carol is providing a muchneeded service. Customer loyalty and recommendations count for so much, and Carol has been so grateful for the loyalty shown by so many of her regular customers, especially as this last year has been particularly challenging for her. Now, Carol has re-located again, but only a few doors nearer to North Street, still on Wherry’s Lane. Her main business is still to make alterations and repairs to all types of garments, specialising in wedding and bridesmaids’ dresses, along with prom gowns. The last few weeks have been hectic, but that’s how Carol prefers it. She can almost guarantee that a week is the maximum she will need to make any alterations to a garment. Her considerably larger, brighter and more welcoming shop enables Carol to stock a wider range of fabrics than ever before, whilst the haberdashery section bulges with
everything a seamstress might require. This aspect of Carol’s business has recently proven to be more and more popular, with a wide range of craft and hobby items, sewing materials and knitting equipment and wools on offer. If she hasn’t got an item in stock, Carol can usually get it for you within two days. The new premises now provide a spacious fitting room and an accompanying large sofa, with magazines and pattern books galore, all of which add to the relaxing vibe which Carol has successfully achieved. Why not pay her a visit and see just what this talented lady can do for you?

DYKE SCARECROW FESTIVAL EXPANDS TO TWO DAYS, A BEER FESTIVAL AND A CEILIDH! Now a regular feature in the Lincolnshire calendar, Dyke villagers are once again preparing highly elaborate scarecrows to be displayed at Dyke Scarecrow Festival. Building on the success of previous years, the festival is expanding once more to a twoday event, and will include a Saturday night ceilidh and a ‘Scarecrow Beer Festival’, over the weekend of September 9th/10th. Scarecrows will be on display from Saturday lunchtime through to Sunday afternoon. Along with the scarecrows will be a display of classic cars, farm machinery, a bouncy castle, an amazing colour maze, a face painter, a display by an art group, a dance display, lace making, a dog show, craft stalls, a variety of food and drink sellers, inflatables and many other stalls and exhibitions, across the whole weekend. Katy Morrison, Dyke Village Hall Committee member and one of the event organisers, said, “Every year, we’re overwhelmed with the event’s success and look for ways we can add to the fun for all the family. We haven’t had a beer festival in Dyke for several years, and we thought it could be an excellent addition to the weekend’s events. We just hope no-one gets confused by our straw-filled residents after an ale or two! We won’t get caught out with the weather either, as Morton Village Hall have kindly loaned us a
large marquee. The event’s on, come rain or shine, and everyone’s welcome.” This year’s event promises something for everyone, with stalls and exhibitions across the whole village, providing added entertainment to the scarecrow trail. Villagers typically display between fifty to sixty scarecrows of all shapes and sizes, many of which compete for the highly-sought-after trophy and cash prizes. Outside entries are welcomed too. Non-residents can request a space for their own creation by e-mailing the Village Hall Committee (contact@dykevillagehall.org.uk). An entry form can be found on the Dyke Village Hall website at www.dykevillagehall.org.uk Sponsors of the event include: The Stores Dept, Graham Hill Way, Bourne ; The Universal Fitness Centre, Cherry Holt Road, Bourne; Claybournes, Bathrooms and Kitchens, Cherry Holt Square, Bourne; and Trev’s Tyres, Cherry Holt Square, Bourne. As in previous years, the prize fund has been kindly donated by The Wishing Well Inn, who will be open over the festivities. Grab your map at the designated car park and follow the scarecrow trail, (open from 11am on Saturday to 3pm on Sunday), to vote for your favourite scarecrow. The much-awaited prizes will be given at 4pm on Sunday 10th at Dyke Village Hall, and visitors are encouraged to attend.
See www.dykevillagehall.org.uk for more information. Entry forms for the Scarecrow Competition can be downloaded from www.dykevillagehall.org.uk. All competition entries must be received by Friday September 1st.

Bourne’s “ThreePart-Shop” for that something special When local lady, Alison Bunning, was introduced to the craft of needle felting five years ago, little did she realise how it would take over her life and lead on to her taking over The Craft Centre, on Bourne’s West Street. She changed her career path, and speaks fondly of how her “addiction” to this most exacting of needle crafts sees her now run classes for others to become as proficient and creative as she herself has become. The business which Alison now runs comprises three main strands. The workshops which are accommodated within the main section of her premises enable crafters of all ages and abilities to learn and develop their skills in not just needle felting, but also crocheting and knitting and a whole host of other craft. The Tuesday afternoon, “craft and chat” session has become an established favourite since Alison took on her new career eighteen months ago. The therapeutic potential of sitting and producing something creative is clearly in mind, as Alison explains how her workshop for her elderly Mencap users is one of her most rewarding. Craft-themed birthday parties and school-holiday activities for youngsters are another imaginative means by which her premises are fully utilised. Many groups of children have already taken this opportunity to make their special day even more special. Strand number two is The Craft Centre’s “Rent-a-shelf” policy for local crafters and artisans. Here, in what is almost a “craft fair”, a whole gamut of attractive items are for sale, with stock being forever rotated, as Alison strives to keep everything fresh and appealing. Jewellery and fabric items sit next to wood-turned pieces, fascinating lampshades hang above scented candles, whilst hand-made cards, chutneys, pickles and jams are waiting to become that perfect gift. Alison is keen to extend this aspect of her operation, and she would love to be able to include some pottery items, for instance, if any readers fancy turning their hobby into something more rewarding. (Just let her know!) With such an emphasis on all kinds of fibres, it comes as no surprise that The Craft Centre’s third strand involves the stocking of masses of wools, felt supplies and all manner of accessories like knitting needles, crochet hooks and accessories. The handspun wool, which Alison takes pride in showing, is particularly popular, and typifies for me the whole business – something of real quality, presented carefully, and all facilitated by a friendly and welcoming expert in her field.

The Bowthorpe Oak - Improved Access and Ready to Welcome More Visitors
Bowthorpe Park Farm is a traditional mixed, family farm, (located near Manthorpe, between Bourne and Stamford on the A6121), with a very special claim to fame. The “Bowthorpe Oak” is well-known, holding the Guinness World Record for having the largest girth of any living English oak tree. Its girth measures 13.3 metres (at 1.5 metres above the ground). The age of the tree is unknown, but oak trees can grow at a rate of one metre per one hundred years, which could make the tree over 1300 years old! In 1768, the then-resident of Bowthorpe Park Farm fitted the tree with a door, roof and pigeon loft. Oak trees hollow out naturally, but George Pauncefort esq. was also reported as having carved out the tree and fitted benches around the inside and then hosting dinner parties for up to twelve people. Some of the nails used to fix the benches in place can still be seen. The tree sits in a grass field on the farm and, until recently, the farm animals were free to graze around it. However, as part of the work carried out recently, access to the tree has been made easier with a new roadway and carpark, making it a short walk to see the Bowthorpe Oak. The tree in itself is worth a visit but, in addition, visitors can now walk around the newly-fenced paddocks to see some of the farm animals. Pigs, goats, sheep and some of the farm’s pedigree Lincoln Red cattle herd are all on show, with some activities for children. The health of the tree is very important to the Blanchard family who run the farm, and so it is inspected every year by an arboricultural consultant. With increasing numbers of people visiting the oak, advice was given to install a fence around the tree to protect the roots from compaction. The tree is in good condition and comes into leaf each year and produces many acorns in the autumn. The Blanchards are fifth generation farmers at Bowthorpe Park Farm. Their farm is a mixed holding, growing crops and rearing livestock. This works well, with the cereal crops being

used to feed the animals and providing straw for bedding. The animal manure is then used to help feed the crops, whilst temporary grassland in the rotation helps with weed control. Bowthorpe Park Farm opens its gates to the public over the weekends and bank holidays. They also welcome school trips, tourist groups and clubs for educational visits, with a talk on the farm and its animals, during the week and in the evenings. They plan to keep adding more and will be running specialised events, so please follow them on social media to keep up to date.

Gardening
The Potting Shed During this month you should see a good return on the time that has been invested earlier in the year, and be gathering the fruits of your labour: visits to the supermarket fruit and veg counter should be far more infrequent, as you now have a daily supply of wonderful fresh produce. A good job to do this month is to take stock of where you have planted this year’s crops and start plans for next year’s crop rotation. The weather has been very erratic so far; we have seen some of the hottest days for a long time, along with some pretty wet weather, so frequent watering is a must. Putting mulch around vegetables will help retain the moisture. However, as it is drier, the weeds are less rampant and the occasional hoeing keeps them at bay, so – more time watering, less time weeding. It’s more about harvesting in August rather than planting but there are still one or two crops that you can sow: mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ) and a last batch of carrots and turnips. However, as you harvest your crops and create some space you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and kale, and sow a few more seeds for spring cabbage. Strawberry runners that
have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot. If you wish to store garlic, onions and shallots they will need to be thoroughly dried out and this can be achieved by lifting them carefully and laying them on the ground in the sun or spreading them out on racks. They can then be strung and hung, but not in the kitchen as the atmosphere is too moist; somewhere cool and dry is advisable. Other jobs to do this month:● Don’t forget to pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: if runner beans are left unpicked for any length of time cropping is greatly reduced - you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year. ● Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. ● Be on the lookout for potato blight.
Happy harvesting!

Stay Safe This Barbecue Season SUMMER’S here – and whatever the weather, we Brits just love our barbecues!
ESTATE AGENTS ~ VALUERS ~ AUCTIONEERS SURVEYORS ~ LETTINGS ~ RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL ~ AGRICULTURAL
Landlords… we want
YOU!
A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. With commentary of the weekend sporting events providing a summery background, what’s not to love? Sadly, some “BBQ bashes” are ruined because of accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/ LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK, having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents, as shown by the HASS/LASS figures, were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame - 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200. The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure your barbecue is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture, such as wooden or plastic chairs. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder.
Tel: 01778 420406 Email: bourne@longstaff.com
• When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair. To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy. Wishing you all a very happy, healthy, fun and above all – safe – barbecue season.

Legal Corner
The Law and the Family by Richard Wood
T
he law interacts with our family life mostly without us realising, and usually we only know about it when something unusual happens or goes wrong.
Solicitors can help at the beginning of family relationships. Where there are unequal contributions to a purchase of a home, a Deed of Beneficial Interest can set out how net proceeds of sale are to be divided if the parties later split up, or if they wish to protect their interest going forward, even when a couple remain happily settled over their lives. Sometimes, when a couple marry, they want to enter into a Pre-Nuptial Agreement which sets out what would happen if they split. An exchange of information relating to each party’s income, assets, liabilities and pensions is considered, and a Deed (Agreement) negotiated. It is not for everyone and should be carefully thought through. Usually, these Agreements should be reviewed at later dates. When relationships are breaking down, solicitors are either dealing with married couples or those who are living together, but are unmarried. Much of the law governing
marriage is set out in The Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. What is important, if that is possible, is for the clients to use the offices of Relate to see if it is possible to reconcile their differences. Sadly, that is not always successful. If married, a couple can consider whether they wish to enter in to a Separation Agreement to formalise their separation, without getting divorced. If that is not for them, they should consider who shall divorce the other and on what basis. A married couple should then try to agree a financial order to regulate any agreement between them. For unmarried couples, the process is different and can depend on the parties’ conduct, statements made and how they own property.

Your Finances
Passing on wealth without further tax charges by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd
I
nheritance tax (IHT) rules are changing. From April 6th, the new ‘residence nil-rate band’ (RNRB) can be claimed on estates alongside the existing £325,000 nilrate band. It will start at £100,000 per person, increasing by £25,000 annually until 2020, when the £175,000 per person maximum will be reached. After that, it is expected to increase annually with inflation. The intention is that the combined reliefs will eventually allow married couples and civil partners to pass on assets worth £1 million, including the family home, without paying any IHT. However, there are several caveats, for most people, achieving the headline figure could be much harder than anticipated. As the name suggests, the Residence Nil-Rate Band can only be claimed on a property that was at one time the home of the deceased and is left to the deceased’s children or grandchildren. It can’t be claimed if the deceased had no direct descendants, or planned for their home to be left to someone else. In addition, the property will have to be worth at least £175,000 per person, or £350,000 per couple, in order for the estate to benefit in full.
grow to exceed the proposed limits, leaving a potential IHT liability where none had been expected. YOU MAY NEED TO AMEND YOUR WILL
To leave a completely IHT-free £1 million estate, you would have to be part of a married couple or civil partnership that has done no previous estate planning in the last seven years. To prevent the very wealthy from benefitting, the allowance will be reduced by a rate of £1 for every £2 by which the estate exceeds £2 million. The relief is removed completely when the estate reaches £2.35 million. Also, anyone who disposed of their property before July 8th 2015 – say, because they are in residential care – will not benefit from the new allowance at all. Any measures introduced to ease the IHT burden for families are welcome, but the number of estates likely to benefit fully from the RNRB appears disappointingly small. In fact, IHT receipts are expected to keep rising over the next five years. An estate that currently appears to fit comfortably within the thresholds could – in a fairly short timeframe –
The majority of the people don’t know of, or understand, the changes that have come into force in this new tax year. You may need to amend your will to ensure your estate can benefit from the increased allowance. Even among those who do know about the changes, most don’t realise that the increased tax-free amount can apply to cash proceeds from the sale of the home, if you downsize or have to go into care. WELL-THOUGHT-OUT ESTATE PLAN Worse still, many living as a couple but not married or civil partnered don’t have wills. Unless assets are owned as jointly, including the family home, their estate will pass to their children who would have no obligation to provide anything to the remaining partner. It has never been more important to have an estate plan; complete with an appropriate will and supporting documentation.

Scanning - Tips and Tricks
W
ith many people now having multifunction printers at home, scanning and copying has become available to many of us. As a result, questions on scanning are very common. Setting up and using the scanner We will use Microsoft’s Windows Fax and Scan here as it available to all. This is a basic tool with very little by way of features, but the principles are the same for more complex scanning solutions. Open Windows Fax and Scan (if you can’t find it, do a search for it)
by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC
The scanning window will open and you will be given a choice of ‘Preview’ or ‘Scan’. Before making that scan though, it is important to change the settings to meet the required use of the document that you are scanning.
Source: Almost always Flatbed unless you have a sheet feeder that supports scanning. File Type: For photos use JPG. Resolution: 300dpi is the most common default resolution and will suit most needs. Once all that is set you can click on Scan Your scanner should now be whirring away and creating the new scan file. When complete, you will
Now click New Scan
Where are my scanned images stored? In the case of Windows Fax and Scan, the scanned images are stored in your Documents folder under a subfolder called Scanned Documents. Every scanner manufacturer has their own scanner software with more features than Windows Fax and Scan. It is important to check where this stores its scans as it can be frustrating trying to find them. This information will be held in the Options for each of these programs.
Profile: Two choices here – Text or Photo? In most of cases it will be Photo.
You can now insert the document that you wish to scan onto the scanner/printer glass bed.
see the scanned file list in the scan window.
What is OCR? Most multifunction printers now support OCR, (Optical Character Recognition). When creating a scan, most are created as PDF or JPG files, document and image files that are viewable, but not immediately editable. If you wish to create a document that you can edit, such as a text document in Word, then this process is called OCR. The scan is taken as normal but an extra step is added, whereby the software processes the scanned image to identify any text on the page. It will then create a word processing document (such as a .docx for Word) that will allow you to edit the content.
You will next be asked to choose a scanner.

Summertime can still be “House-Buying Time”! by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell
S
o, it’s mid-summer, Wimbledon has come and gone, and the weekends often have the smell of barbecued meats on the wind. August is always a busy time for UK households, the school summer holidays are in full swing and most of us are at panic stations either trying to figure out what to do with our dear offspring, or hearing the famous words, “Are we nearly there yet?” It is a trying time where we often start to realise that what often matters is not where you go but who you’re with. The stress and pressure to balance time off from work, to squeeze in a holiday to some distant shore and get in a trip or two to the beach, followed by the classic scenario of begging relatives to help with child care, whilst getting in a few drunken weekends with friends, can often leave us fairly frazzled.
The housing market tends to simmer during the summer months with all that going on, although I predict that first-time-buyers will be still in the mix as, for them, if the house for them is there, they’ll grab it. I also suspect there may be a few families doing the same, as some of the year’s earlier events have caused many to pause before acting. So, if you are looking to sell, I’m very confident we can get you some great leads … in between boozy weekends of course! Finally, if you want to ride the blue sky market, where the photos always look stunning and the viewings are always accompanied, call Newton Fallowell today and we’ll get you sold.

Pets and Vets
Get to know your dog by Lionel Smith
F
or the last year, I have been training my chihuahua, Phoebe. At the same time, three of my sons, my daughter and my wife have been training our other dogs. Dog training has changed a lot over the last twenty years, with a greater understanding of dog behaviour. The idea of dominance and forcing changes of behaviour has gone, and has been replaced with reward-based training, producing willing cooperation. The whole idea is to build a relationship and have fun. Most people do not want to compete at highlevel agility or obedience, but do want to be able to have some control and co-operation from their dogs.
We have had such fun training our dogs. Training (attempting to!) a chihuahua was a new challenge for me, especially as I seem to have a problem controlling my feet around such a little dog! It is also amazing how many treats a little dog can eat. She particularly likes smoked mackerel, which may be great for training, but not so good smelling of fish for the rest of the day! Besides mastering the basics, (walking on the lead, sitting on command, recall and walking off the lead), we have done trick training and fun agility. We have taught our dogs to touch things with their nose or paws, and then used this to make people think they can find things on command (secretly using the scent from treats). We have taught our dogs to weave between our legs and jump through our arms. Recently, we have combined a bit of agility and trickery and have our dogs jumping over and going under each other. The main point of all this is building a strong relationship with your pet. At the same time, it is a lot of fun (as long as you do not take it too seriously). When you can influence your pet with rewards and you play and have fun with them, then you become the person they want to be with, above all other things. It does take time and patience, but it does not have to be forever - just enough to set up that important relationship. No matter how much you think you know about training dogs, it is good to train with other people and other dogs. There will be classes to suit any ability. All dogs and owners should experience this basic training, to make the best of their relationships. There are many good trainers in the area. You can ask your local vet for more information.

Motoring
Welcome Patrick Hunt - Our New Motoring Correspondent
P
atrick Hunt is Managing Director of Go Go Go Intensive, and a member of The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Go Go Go Intensive is the only Intensive Driving School in the UK to be affiliated to the IAM, the UK’s leading road safety charity.
I’d like to start off by thanking “Discovering Magazines” for inviting me to write a column in the motoring section of this magazine. My intention is to make it informative, keep readers up to date with current legislation, offer some tips on how you can drive more safely and how to improve your enjoyment when driving. You never know, I might even be able to squeeze in some bonhomie and humour as I get more comfortable writing this column. (“Steady on, Tiger. Leave the wise cracks to me!” – Ed.) It’s fair to say that the U.K. has one of the highest standards of driving in the world. The safest place in the world to drive is Micronesia, a sovereign island nation spread across the western Pacific Ocean, with 1.9 road deaths per 100,000 people, and only a total of two road deaths throughout the whole of 2015. The second safest is Sweden, with a ratio of 2.8 deaths per 100,000 people and the third safest is the UK with 2.9 vehicle deaths per 100,000. So, to all of you road users out there, I congratulate you and applaud you, as we have the second safest roads in Europe.
However, the most alarming statistic is that, in the UK, one in five new drivers crash in the first six months of passing their driving test. Road crashes are the biggest killer of young people in the UK today. It seems that most young people have little desire to treat driving as a skill for life, and just want to learn as cheaply and as quickly as possible. The Institute of Advanced Motorists, (IAM), has agreed to donate a competition prize to readers of this column. IAM Roadsmart offer advanced driver training and teach Roadcraft, the benchmark of police driving. By becoming an “Advanced Driver”, you will have more confidence on the road, improved skills and knowledge, opportunities to make better progress in your journey, cheaper insurance, and be the safest driver. In my next column, there will be comprehensive information about the course and how one lucky reader can win this prize. Until then, happy motoring and remember … “when a man opens a car door for his wife, it’s either a new car or a new wife”, (an observation attributed to H.R.H. Prince Philip).

Police Patrol
Sexting
by Sergeant 600 Rachel Blackwell
T
aking over from Sgt Mosley’s Monthly Musings, my intention is to publish interesting or insightful articles about real crime matters that we often deal with in the Bourne and Deeping areas. This month, we take a look at the growing trend of “Sexting” which we are increasingly seeing reported to us by concerned parents and schools. What is Sexting? Sexting (or “sex texting”) is the sending or receiving of sexually explicit or sexually suggestive images, messages, or video via a mobile phone, social media applications / the internet. Examples of sexting include sending: • nude or nearly nude photos or “selfies” • videos that show nudity, sex acts, or simulated sex • text messages that propose sex or refer to sex acts Facts and Figures Since the start of 2017, in the Bourne / Deeping / Stamford area there have been 22 crimes recorded involving the taking / sharing of sexual images of children. This was largely involving the sharing of sexual images by young people in their teens. Popular Culture The harsh reality is that teenagers are “sexting” each other for a variety of reasons. Two consenting teenagers
in a relationship may share images to flirt with each other. Sexting happens as some teens think it is cool, or want to increase their popularity, and see it as a joke. More sinister, is the sharing of images to embarrass others or the threat to share images if the teenager doesn’t send more material. The Law The law is clear -when you’re under 18 it’s against the law for anyone to take or have a sexual photo of you – even if it’s a selfie. This means that if you are a girl or boy under 18 and you take a sexual image of yourself or share an image of this nature, you’re breaking the law (even if you are both over 16 and in a committed relationship!!) Whilst the taking / sharing of indecent images will be recorded by police, the motivations for the sharing of images will determine whether or not further police action will be taken against the sender. Our role is to protect and educate young people who don’t realise that what they are doing is a criminal act, but to also seek out and deal with predators trying to secure images from young people for the purpose of gratification or manipulation. Guidance Police will deal with any reports of sexting in a positive and helpful way. If you have any concerns about images that are available and beyond your control, you can contact your local Police for advice. Call 101. Childline also has a useful toolkit for parents, carers and young people who are worried about sexting, which includes what to do when sexting has gone badly. https://www.childline.org.uk/info-advice/ bullying-abuse-safety/online-mobile-safety/ sexting/#issextingillegal-Sexting To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Crimestoppers 0800 555 111
