This month, we feature Bourne’s weekly market, which, (as you’ll be able to discover from our resident fount of all things historical, Rex Needle), was founded by royal charter granted to the Lord of the Manor of Bourne, Baldwin Wake, by King Edward I in 1279. Lots of “eau” has flowed under the bridge since then of course, but our regular traders continue to arrive on a Thursday and a Saturday, enabling us to still call ourselves a “market town”. Don’t forget: “Spring forward, Fall back”, as we lose the hour on Sunday October 29th. On the subject of reminders, the old, “round pound” coin will cease to be legal tender after October 15th, which leads us seamlessly into comedian Ken Cheng’s one-liner, which has been named funniest joke of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival: “I’m not a fan of the new pound coin, but then again, I hate all change.” Enjoy the read!

Words from the Mayor Councillor Paul Fellows

I’ll start by thanking a whole host of wonderful people: Thank you Chris and Harry at Elsea Park Co-op; Nicky, Leanne and Lucy at the Hereward Practice; and Steve at Digby Court. Each of these wonderful people looked after me when I added to the pressure of their day by foisting myself on them. And also, a big thank you to the organisers of the Dyke Scarecrow Festival for three amazing days! The almost new Co-op at Elsea Park is providing a very much needed service, as more people move into this part of Bourne, and has a huge range of stock. The manager, Chris, is absolutely community-minded and committed to developing the principles that the Co-op was originally founded on. Check it out - I had a great day stocking shelves and meeting customers.

Judi and I joined the Rotary Club at the ‘planting’ of a Peace Pole at Westfield School. The pole itself has ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ in nine languages. It was heartening to hear the plans that headteacher, Elaine Radley, has for its development, with “care and understanding of others” totally rooted in the ethos of the school.

We were also privileged to be invited to the opening of the new libraries at Bourne Abbey School and Elsea Park School, both officially opened by Mike Dilger, wildlife expert and regular presenter on BBC’s ‘The One Show.’ Each library is amazingly decorated and provides a space for children that is imaginative, welcoming and inspiring. Well done to both schools. 8

When I joined Nicky and her team for a day at the Hereward Practice, I had hoped I would be allowed to do the odd injection or set the wayward bone! Luckily, and rightly so, I was not even allowed to ask anyone to cough or take a deep breath, but keeping first Leanne, and then Lucy, company on reception, I was soon made aware of the amazing job our health professionals do in Bourne. They all deserve a huge thank you for their commitment and care. I think I want to thank Steve for allowing me to help him re-lay some wayward slabs at Digby Court and, as I escaped with no aching muscles or trapped finger tips, I will! Steve is the cog that keeps so many of the practical necessities functioning at Digby Court, and it was great to spend time with him and do some ‘blokey’ work. oct obe r 2 0 1 7

BOURNE FOOTLIGHTS PRESENT ‘GLORIOUS’ Members of Bourne Footlights, (one of the area’s leading amateur dramatics groups), are currently rehearsing ‘Glorious’, a comedy by award-winning West End and Broadway playwright, Peter Quilter. Directed by Jane Webb, ‘Glorious ‘ is based on the life of Florence Foster Jenkins, the legendary New

York heiress and socialite who wanted to be a great operatic diva, and who used all her money, charm and unstoppable will-power to make it happen. Set in New York in the 1940s, the play begins with Madame Jenkins, (Mary Haggar), auditioning her pianist Cosme McMoon, (Ian Gibbs). This delightful and funny play follows the exploits of Florence, Cosme, St Clair (Martin Tyrrell), Dorothy (Lynn Kirk) and Maria (Nina Quinlan), through recordings and recitals to the crowning moment of a concert in Carnegie Hall.

Guaranteed to leave you with a warm glow and a smile on your face, ‘Glorious’ will be performed at Bourne Corn Exchange on Wednesday November 8th, Thursday November 9th and Friday November 10th. BOURNE TOWN HALL – HERITAGE WEEKEND OPEN DAYS On September 9th and 10th, Bourne Town Hall opened its doors to the public as part of National Heritage Open Days, when thousands of properties countrywide were open, free of charge, to the public.

The response far exceeded expectations, with over three hundred visitors over the two days, many of whom had never seen the inside of the building before, even though they had lived in Bourne for many years – but then only a few would have seen the old Magistrates Court! Downstairs in the “shambles” were old photographs of the Town Hall, its various uses and events from the early twentieth century, along with plenty of information relating to them –which were kindly provided by Rex Needle. Also the Bourne Floral Club arranged a stunning display of flowers in one of the alcoves. Upstairs, the Magistrates Court was laid out as it was before it closed in 2008, with some information about past miscreants. 12

Amongst the visitors we had one gentleman whose grandfather looked after the horses that drew the fire tender, which was kept under one of the Town Hall’s arches. Many of the longer-standing members of Bourne shared their memories, with several having fond recollections of the market in front of the Town Hall and the cattle and pig markets behind. There were also ancestors of those who had donated money to the building of the Town Hall in 1821 (which was financed by public subscription), when it was a centre for local affairs and petty and quarter sessions were held there. Plans for the future development of the building as an Arts Centre were on display and, almost without exception, people were very excited about the Town Hall’s future and

what a benefit it would be to the community. Now we have to raise a substantial amount of money, along with the Heritage grant, to renovate and remodel the interior, and with your help and support we are convinced that this is possible. oct obe r 2 0 1 7

“It’s a Scarecrow Takeover!” – A Review of Dyke Festival For the fourth year in succession, scarecrows descended upon Dyke, loitering around villagers’ gardens, looking innocent standing on verges and suspiciously hanging about public places. This year, the festival committee had organised additional attractions to extend the interest. The inclusion of a Beer Festival included an opportunity for live music on both evenings. Friday saw local musician, “Henry” providing some enjoyable entertainment, whilst the inclusion of the Beltonas ceilidh band ensured that everybody became involved the next night.

On Saturday, there were many stalls, with items ranging from novelty toys to greeting cards, pet food to ceramics, and model cars to lace-making. In addition, Paul Fellows, Bourne Town Mayor, introduced “The Friends of Stamford Theatre”, who provided an excellent performance on the stage in the beer tent. On Sunday, there were more stalls and a number of wellreceived activities. Local dance school, LDC, performed an impressive display, followed by local dog-training and care company, “On the Ball”, who ran a fun dog show. Later, the Tuneless Choir performed a range of popular songs and were successful in getting good audience participation, whilst surprising many with their ability. Pleasing to report were some very positive responses from many people who had attended. One notable success was that a large number of villagers of a wide age range had joined in and enjoyed the various activities that had been provided over the weekend. There are many people to thank for their hard work, support and creative input, namely: Dyke Village Hall Management Committee and the Scarecrow SubCommittee, Members of Dyke WI, William Ash, Phillip Sherwin, Monty Andrews and the friends and relatives of Stephen Castel. Main sponsors for this year’s event were The Stores Department, (Graham Hill Way, Bourne); Universal

Fitness Centre, (Cherry Holt Road); Claybournes Kitchen and Bathrooms, (Cherry Holt Square); Trev’s Tyres, (Cherry Holt Square); and the Wishing Well Inn, Dyke. Results of the Scarecrow Competition: In first place, and winner of the trophy – Oh-Bee-HayVe! (Bethany Longland, aged eight, representing the Longland family). In second place – Sponge Bob Square Pants by Tina Lovesey. In third place – Prince Amy and Spartan by Mr N..Flynn. Dr Brian Parkinson, Chair of the Dyke Village Hall Management Committee, summarised the weekend, announced the result, and thanked all concerned, before writing this review. So now for 2018, but perhaps a little break first, before the excitement starts again!

The Wright Girls Doing the Right Thing! It has certainly been a summer to remember for these two sisters, Emily and Chloe Wright, from Edinburgh Crescent in Bourne. The £100 wad of cash is their reward for having been the lucky winners of our August, Seaside Treasure Hunt, competition. Both girls attend Bourne Abbey Academy C. of E. School and Nursery. The competition proved to be our most popular yet with scores of

youngsters dragging parents round the various shops and businesses, in search of the clues. (Yes, there were several mums and dads too, who were doing the dragging £100 takes a lot of earning, you know!) Many thanks to you all for having entered, and to the forty businesses whose windows were the focus of so much attention during August.

Friends of Bourne Wood: Vacancy for a Voluntary Orchard Manager The Friends of Bourne Wood (FOBW) established a community orchard on land adjacent to Bourne Wood in 2012. The orchard is now fully planted with a diverse mixture of fruit trees, many of which are sponsored by local people or organisations. The varieties planted range from old, local ones to well-known varieties. A bed of

raspberries has also been included, as an extra interest. A wildlife pond has recently been commenced.

The voluntary orchard manager job description, role and key tasks The Friends are now seeking a voluntary orchard manager, whose overall role will be to: • Work closely with the community orchard volunteers, FOBW and FC to deliver the objectives of the orchard management plan.

• The revised orchard management plan will need to be signed off by the FOBW Committee including FC.

• Ensure that the necessary tools and consumables are available.

• Any proposed expenditure for purchase of equipment and tools will need to be agreed in advance by the FOBW Committee.

More specifically, the role will entail:

• Where necessary, liaise with and organise any third-party work parties.

• Undertaking the key tasks and meeting the targets from the management plan which include:

• Establish an orchard working group (a sub-committee of the main FOBW Committee).

· Complete the pond and ensure it is fenced.

• Revise the orchard management plan in liaison with FC and the FOBW Committees.

· Ensure the fruit trees are pruned annually and the bases are kept free of vegetation. · Ensure the paths and orchard are mown according to the stipulated frequency. · Undertake regular checks of the benches, picnic tables and noticeboard, and arrange for repairs and wood preservation, as necessary. 14

• Organise and plan the weekly work parties and provide management and supervision for the volunteers.

• Attend the FOBW Committee meetings and provide progress reports. Authority • The post holder will have delegated authority from the FOBW Committee to organise and direct the work parties and establish an orchard working group sub-committee.

Time commitment • Estimating the time commitment for this new role is difficult, but it is anticipated that the time input will be an annual average of around three to four hours a week. Key skills required • Strong communication and organisational skills. Familiar with networking with voluntary and statutory organisations and volunteers with a range of skills. • Diplomacy skills. • Some understanding of horticulture (fruit trees) is desirable, but not essential.

Farewell “Mower Queen” and Thank You!

(A well-deserved acknowledgement from Bourne’s Mayor, Paul Fellows) Waiting at the traffic lights in the middle of town recently, I was behind Hayley Pateman, who was sitting on Bourne United Charities’ mower, but please do not think “lawn mower”: think - MOWER! A beast of a machine, street legal and, with Hayley on it, it was on its way to cut the grass at the Abbey Lawn. For the last nine years, Hayley has been a very important member of the team that has looked after the Abbey Lawn, the Well Head Park, The War Memorial and the gardens that sit behind and around the Bourne Eau and Baldock’s Mill; this being the muchphotographed southern ‘entrance’ to Bourne, the bank of the river which everyone says looks fantastic when in spring it is covered with daffodils. Working alongside Andy Scotney, Hayley has made a huge contribution to Bourne by making sure that the open parkland that sits in the middle of our town looks amazing and, down the years, developed it into the living resource that it is. Many towns would love to have what we have on the Abbey Lawn. We have sporting facilities we can be proud of and a space which, whilst housing these

Sophie Allport Marks Ten Years with a Move to New Premises Lincolnshire homewares business, Sophie Allport, celebrates their tenth anniversary this year. The business was founded in 2007 by designer Sophie and her accountancy-trained brother, Jem, in a spare bedroom in Battersea, London. The business

has come a long way since then. 2009 saw a move to a garage office outside Stamford and then, in 2011, expansion took them to King Street Industrial Estate near Langtoft. The business is due to move to a new 35,000 square foot site in Bourne. Previously a distribution centre for Carlsberg, it has been renamed ‘The Old Brewery’ by Sophie and her team! “We are in the midst of upgrading the site with a plan to move the warehousing and offices in early October,” explained Jem. Ready for Hallowe’en on October 31st? - What’s that all about then? Hallowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Two Easy Steps to Look Amazing this Winter by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

f you are wanting to look your best for the party season this year, now is the time to make your action plan. Once upon a time, we just counted our calories and made a reduction enough to lose those extra pounds. It’s a tiresome exercise, weighing food and referring to calorie charts daily and in recent years, there has been more emphasis on the types of food we eat, rather than their calorific value.

Step Two: Reduce your calorie intake by 250 kcal daily.

So do calories really count anymore if you want to lose weight?

By doing this, you are creating an energy deficit of 500kcals a day and 3500kcals a week. This equates to losing one to two pounds of weight a week.

The truth is that if you reduce your calorie intake by 3,500 calories per week (or 500 calories per day), you will lose one to two pounds each week. However, controlling the content of those calories will make your weight loss easier to maintain. Keeping sugar and starchy carbohydrates to a minimum and making up your calories from good quality protein, lots of green fruit and vegetables and healthy fats, will squash hunger cravings and promote a better body shape and improve your overall health. Increasing your activity levels will burn calories and therefore mean you have more flexibility for food, and improve your muscle tone and body shape. Therefore, if you follow these two easy steps you will reach your goal. You need to reduce your calorie intake by 250kcals a day and increase the amount of energy you burn by 250kcals a day. Step One: Increase your daily activity to burn 250 kcals a day. (This energy expenditure should be on top of what you normally do now). e.g.250kcals = A 30 minute RENU workout. = A 45 minute brisk walk. = 60 minutes Pilates class. = 60 minutes vacuuming and sweeping the floor. = 45 minutes moderate cycling.

e.g. 250kcals = Three Bourbon biscuits. = A large glass of wine. = An ounce of cheese and two biscuits. = A Mars bar. = A 50g ‘grab bag’ of crisps.

Even more importantly, by creating an energy deficit of 500kcals a day, you will be burning fat cells. This means you will be more likely to maintain your loss, and you will improve your muscle tone. However, beware of ‘crash diets!’ It is tempting to try to cut out more calories to lose weight quicker, but beware. If you were to cut out more calories a day than advised on the energy deficit, you would be ‘crash dieting’. Crash diets can make your weight drop dramatically; however, the weight lost will go back on just as quickly. This means that if you start now, you could lose twelve to fourteen pounds before the party season starts! The Blight of so-called “Text Neck”! by Rebecca Brett

here is no question that the development of technology and changes to the way we communicate with each other has led to us being virtually glued to our electronic devices. Such changes in habits have been attributed to the upsurge in treatment requirements for postural complaints. The so-called “Text Neck Syndrome” is an overuse syndrome or repetitive stress disorder, caused by holding your head in a downward and forward position for long periods of time. When you hold your head in a correct upright position with the ears central to the shoulders, the neck muscles and spine can equally support the weight of the head. If the head is allowed to fall forwards and downwards by even 1 inch from its natural position, approximately six times as much force can be generated through the neck!!

To illustrate this, imagine holding a bowling ball close to your chest with both hands. Now imagine holding the same bowling ball with your hands away from the body with outstretched arms. Which is harder? The same can be said for your head; the further away from the body it falls forwards, the greater the effort required to support it. Over time, symptoms such as stiffness, dull aches and sharp pains in the neck, shoulders and upper back can occur. Occasionally, headaches and sometimes referred pain or “pins and needles” in the arms may be suffered. In the worst of cases an increased rounding or hunching of the spine may lead to chronic pain. Treatment of the above symptoms may be helped by remedial massage. A protracted neck (where the chin is positioned more forwards) tends to create tension in the muscles at the front of the neck and chest while overstretching, and weakening the muscles at the back of the neck, shoulders and upper back. After a full postural assessment and joint range testing, appropriate treatment will include massage and stretching, to allow the shoulders to rotate backwards and alleviate any tension in the chest and muscles at the front of the neck. This can help soothe trigger points and other areas of specific pain. A course of treatment will aim to reduce your pain, restore normal range of movement and strength while developing full functional normal movement and ultimately, reduce any recurrence. It is unlikely that we will stop using our devices both at work and at play, but prevention is better than cure. Sports / remedial massage may help you to improve your posture through

If someone is losing their mobility, is concerned about managing their finances or may even have anxiety about potentially losing their mental capacity, what can they do about it?

• The Donor can appoint up to four attorneys at any given time.

There are occasions when joint accounts between husbands and wives, or cohabitees may assist. However, that may not be what the parties are happy with, and might not cover some eventualities, such as larger commitments and costs.

•

A decade ago, the Government changed the procedure for creating Powers of Attorney. There are now two types. The most popular allows a person to make a document called a Lasting Power of Attorney for Finance and Property. The second type is for Health and Welfare. The person requiring to make the document which, once signed by the relevant parties, becomes a Deed, needs to consider the following:• How much power over their finances and property do they want to give as Donor to their attorney or attorneys – the Donee(s)?

• The Donor can appoint replacement attorneys (substitute attorneys), if one or more attorneys become unable to act. The Donor must decide whether to grant power over all their property or only limited assets. If the power is given over all property, this would mean that their home might be sold and all their money spent, so it is essential that the attorney chosen has the trust of the Donee only to do what is in the best interest of the Donor.

• Words of instruction and preferences may be stated. • The Donor decides if the attorneys act jointly or on their own. The power of attorney may only be used once registered. Most people make an LPA for Finance and Property but it can be used under a version for Health and Welfare. Using the LPA procedure takes less time and the fees are less, as compared with the alternative procedure of appointing a Deputy (Receiver).

– New Premises, New Image but Still the Personal Touch Twenty-seven years on from Rex and Angela Eckford establishing their independent estate agency in Bourne, the time has come to move on … but only a few doors up West Street and away from their long-established Market Place location. Tuesday September 26th is the day that Eckfords will have opened another chapter in their success story, when the tastefully refurbished premises at 29 West Street become home for this most familyoriented of local businesses. Mother and daughter, Angela and Camilla Eckford, along with Jane as assistant manager and Catherine, will operate full-time from the new site, with its fresh, brand new image, startling wall graphics and a new sign

overhead, heralding a bright future. Meanwhile, Rex will still be involved, but only on a part-time basis, dealing with all the professional aspects of the business. Eckfords have long been seen as a key player in the Bourne and district residential and commercial property sales and rental industry, and they draw on a vast wealth of experience in valuing and selling houses. Furthermore, there is an impressive property letting and management section, centred on Bourne, but covering a wide area of South Lincolnshire and further a field. It is worth noting that Eckfords are still the sole selling agents for Kier Homes, one of the principal providers of new homes on the ever-expanding Elsea Park development in the town. “The internet is now a fundamental part of the way in which houses are sold,” Camilla says, adding that most enquiries for properties are now conducted on-line. Nevertheless, she is convinced that “the personal touch is always going to be vital, with the customer seeking and getting unbiased, professional advice”, on a face-to-face basis. Not everyone uses the internet to conduct their affairs. So, whilst footfall on the streets of Bourne has indeed diminished in recent years, there will still be a need for a “High Street presence”. Besides the impressive new accommodation, (almost opposite the post office on West Street), Eckfords have launched a new website, much more user-friendly than before, and one likely to convince the public that Eckfords, this long-established player in the estate agency sector, has now moved with the times, to remain at the forefront. Three years ago, I reported that Rex was confident for the future, where his regular clients would return, time after time, for sound professional advice and that friendly, personal touch. With immediate effect, markets will now be managed by the SKDC Venues and Town Centre Management Team, which has been tasked with working more closely with retailers, businesses, town councils and the community.

Bourne’s Thursday market continues to be a cornerstone of the town’s weekly trading opportunities, but has reduced in size considerably in recent years. The aim of the new team is to reverse this trend and, in doing so, help improve Bourne’s prosperity and appearance.

The Council’s Leader, Councillor Matthew Lee, has even mentioned his aspiration for Bourne to have its own annual festival – potentially based around the town’s famous motor racing heritage. Councillor Robins added: “Motor racing has incredible roots here in Bourne, which we plan to make more of. You only have to look at Goodwood and “Carfest” to see how enormously popular motor-racing is. Bourne could – and should – be enjoying the fruits of this heritage.

Cabinet Member for Retail and Visitor Economy, Councillor Nick Robins, said: “Bourne’s market has a huge variety of stallholders throughout the year, and we want to build on its base of regular traders. The team will be working with them to constantly improve what the market offers and to find ways in which we can co-ordinate more effectively to make the most of local festivals and the superb heritage in our market towns. “In addition to maintaining responsibility for our Arts and Leisure Centres, we are actively looking at further opportunities to engage with traders and businesses across the district. “We have some great facilities in Bourne, from the market to the Corn Exchange and, of course, the Leisure Centre. Each provides a great platform to showcase the town and its growing population. 38

he weekly market was founded by royal charter granted to the Lord of the Manor of Bourne, Baldwin Wake, by King Edward I in 1279 and continues after more than 700 years despite misgivings about its future in the face of competition from supermarkets. The original charter document, now in the British Museum, gave permission for trading to take place on Saturdays and this tradition has continued to the present day although a Thursday market was later added and this has become the more popular of the two. Many similar market towns were being established in England at this time and although the number was seriously reduced by the Black Death, they flourished again during 1500-1650 when Bourne was one of thirty-seven market towns in Lincolnshire. The stalls were originally erected in the market place, now the town centre, around a stone market or butter cross on the west side, ten feet high and standing on an octagonal base with three steps around which the people would gather to gossip and to buy and sell their wares. Old documents indicate that it survived until 1803 but its fate after that is unknown.

The manorial rights were eventually acquired by the Cecil family whose distinguished member William Cecil became the first Lord Burghley, and this entitled his descendants, the Marquesses of Exeter, to receive the market rents. In 1962, the then marquess sold the rights to Bourne Urban District Council and in the local government re-organisation of 1974, they passed to South Kesteven District Council which now collects the market tolls and is responsible for its administration. In later years, the danger from passing traffic to customers using the stalls along North Street and West Street became apparent when a lady shopper was hit by a lorry and in 1990 the council moved them to a safer location, a specially paved area behind the Town Hall where it remains to this day. In past times, the market was a noisy and sometimes riotous event with a great deal of drinking in the local public houses which remained open all day. In 1924, for instance, residents living in the vicinity complained that the late hour of closing on Saturday nights was keeping them awake and demanded that the stalls be removed by 10 pm in order that they could get some sleep. Today, the market is strictly regulated and has usually gone by mid-afternoon. D I S C O V E R I N G

The Potting Shed The first frosts will probably appear this month, if we haven’t already experienced any in September, and the last of many of this year’s crops need picking, as they will not survive. Most of the work this month involves clearing the plot, composting the debris (unless it shows signs of disease); the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. Once the plot has been dug over, manure or fertilise and then cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter, as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. There is no need to dig in the manure as it will get drawn down into the soil over the winter months. An alternative to covering the soil is to plant green manure that will overwinter and can be dug in in the spring. There are very few crops that can be sown or planted out this month. However, ● Last chance to transplant spring cabbages –be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves. ● Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so. ● Broad beans –early varieties should overwinter. ● Overwintering onion sets. ● Rhubarb can be planted and if you already have rhubarb, it is entering its dormant period and can be divided and replanted any time up until March.

Other jobs to do include:● Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground, they will easily rot. ● Earth up, or stake (or both), Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants to prevent strong winds blowing them over. ● Earth up leeks to keep the stems blanched. ● Remove any yellowing leaves from brassicas as leaving them on the ground to rot risks spreading grey mould. ● Cut back Jerusalem artichokes. ● Pick all of the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana –this gives off ethylene gas which speeds up the ripening process. ● Lift and store potatoes in a jute sack – eat any damaged ones first. ● Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun, as this hardens the skins and they will keep for longer. If you like to use herbs, you could sow a pot of basil seeds and put in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket!

Finally, it is thought by some that, if you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil’s luck. Just note how mass murderers, such as Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer all have 13 letters in their names!

s we all approach our retirement, it is important to consider sooner, rather than later, what ‘life after work’ will mean for you.

For many of us, running out of money is the biggest concern regarding our retirement, so careful management and realistic income expectations are important. An increasing income may be important in the early years of retirement, but may be less important in your eighties and nineties. If the remaining size of your pension does become a worry, then annuities could provide the answer, particularly if you qualify for an ‘enhanced’ annuity rate, due to failing health. An annuity is an agreement between an insurance company and an individual, whereby the individual swaps a lump-sum payment for the promise to make regular payments for the rest of the individual’s life. This payment can include provision for a widow’s or widower’s pension and either increase over time or remain level. There can also be the facility to pay a specified number of payments, regardless of whether the annuitant survives that long, or the annuity can be for a fixed period, rather than for life.

A good Financial Adviser will meet with you regularly and guide you as to whether your desired level of income is sustainable in the long-term. This will be affected not just by investment returns, but by the level of risk you are prepared to take, and how you would feel if your funds fell in value over a period of time. The idea of retirement might be daunting, but it is important not to leave everything to chance, and to consider budgeting and risk management before you get there. Remember that an independent Financial Adviser is a good person to speak to, who can help you make the most of your pension, whether you are close to retirement or have only just begun your working life.

Another possible solution to the problem is remaining invested and reducing your income, but will it give you the income you really want? hose of us of a certain age might remember Cat Stevens, fifty years ago, singing the touching lines: “I love my dog as much as I love you. But you may fade, my dog will always come through.”

responsibility that care for people’s animals requires. We are dealing daily with animals that are much loved and we have to strive to ensure that our care is the best that we can give.

Much more recently, I noticed an article in the papers with the headline, “I love my dog more than my children”.

There is no limit to the love that people can give. There is room to love all our family and relations as well as our pets. In a world with so much instability and hatred, it is comforting to me that people can find so much love for their pets.

Although I do not feel this myself, I can understand how this could happen. In a situation with grown-up children, many people spend more time with their pets than their children (and their husbands/wives for that matter!) Generally, the relationship is less complicated with animals and there is often a reliable loyalty. Our pets need us to feed and care for them (like young children), and this vulnerability increases our attachment. Many dogs and cats are living over sixteen years these days. How many friends do we keep for this time and see them every day? I see the love between pets and their owners on a daily basis. People who do not own pets cannot understand this relationship. It is right to call this love, and I believe our pets love us in return. I see frequent examples of the grief that occurs when a pet dies. We often read in the papers when people risk their own life to save a pet, or even when a pet does something to save their owner’s life. As vets, we need to understand this love and take on the absolute

ince I first documented the use of CCleaner in this magazine back in 2012, the utility has undergone a number of new iterations. Let’s take a fresh look at the tool and see what it now has to offer. The first thing you need to do is to download the latest version (currently v5.03). Do a search in your browser for ‘CNET CCleaner’ and use the link on the CNET download.com site as this is guaranteed virusfree. Alternatively, download it from Piriform, the makers of the CCleaner application. The original pre-version 5 tools are still there, but have been improved upon, and there are a number of new utilities that you can use to clean up and manage your PC and startup. As I’ve covered how to run the tool previously, I will limit this article to show the options available. If you need help using CCleaner, then please contact LITES PC. Main Cleaner: On opening, the first screen you will see is the main cleaning screen. The elements selected by default are the ‘standard’ clean, and it is safe to click Run Cleaner to action the process. There are other, more in-depth

cleaning options to the left. Make sure you understand what these are before selecting these, (note: none of them remove your personal data, so that will be safe). Application Cleaner: CCleaner now has an application cleaner tab. Click on Applications, and you can use the tool to clean up your browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox etc.), as well as other leading applications. This is very handy for when you are having issues with your browser, as it can remove items that are ‘clogging up’ your access, and possibly impacting internet availability. Registry Cleaner: The original Windows Registry cleaner is still there, but has been updated. This can be used to clean up the Windows Registry area to improve performance. Remember that, when making changes to the registry, you should always backup the registry first. You will be prompted to do this by CCLeaner. As before, this is a twostep process – Scan then Fix.

Startup allows you to view what programs start in the background when Windows fires up (very useful for doing a cleanup – remove anything you don’t need auto-started). Disk Analyzer checks your disk drive and displays the type of files that are using up your storage space. This is handy if you are running low on disk space and not sure why. Duplicate Finder searches your drive for duplicated files. System Restore allows you to manage your Windows-generated Restore points. Drive Wiper will remove data off any selected drive. It can be a simple Windows delete or a more in-depth secure data removal to prevent any data being retrieved. Options: These are the various options and settings associated with CCleaner. I’d recommend leaving these as they are, unless you have a specific need.

In the many years I’ve been using the tool, I have never had to restore a registry backup, but take one nonetheless; it doesn’t take long to do. New Driving Test Explained - Changes that Every Learner Needs to Know

atrick Hunt is Managing Director of Go Go Go Intensive and a member of The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Go Go Go Intensive is the only Intensive Driving School in the UK to be affiliated to the IAM, the UK’s leading road safety charity.

From Monday December 4th, 2017, there will be four changes to the practical driving test. The new test is designed to make sure that new drivers have the skills to help them with a lifetime of safe driving. During the past few months, I have heard numerous myths regarding the new driving test and thought this would be a good opportunity to explain the changes. The four driving test changes: • The independent driving part of the test will increase from ten to twenty minutes. During this part of the test, you have to drive without turn-by-turn directions from the examiner. This will last for roughly half of the test. • Follow directions from a sat nav during the independent driving part of the test. The examiner will provide the sat nav and set it up for you, so you cannot use your own. One in five driving tests won’t use a sat nav, so the candidate will have to follow traffic signs instead. • Reversing manoeuvres will be changed, and you will no longer be required to ‘reverse around a corner’ or do a ‘turn in the road’. Instead, you will be asked to do one of three possible manoeuvres:

• Parallel park at the side of the road.

• Park in a bay, either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you what you have to do).

• Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for two car lengths and rejoin the traffic.

• Answering a vehicle safety question while you’re driving, known as the “show me” question, and at the start of your test you will need to explain a ‘tell me’ question. These two vehicle safety questions are known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions that your instructor should have already covered. Operation Galileo - Our Response to Hare Coursing by Sergeant 600 Rachel Blackwell

arly September saw the launch of Lincolnshire Police’s Operation Galileo, in response to the annual problem faced by local farmers – hare coursing. What is Hare Coursing? Every year, coursing subjects thousands of hares to stress, injury and death, as well as causing damage and loss to hundreds of farmers, as land is churned up by vehicles, crops battered, and farm infrastructure damaged. The basic premise is that coursers walk along the edges of fields to flush out the hares. They then release dogs, (usually sighthounds, greyhounds, lurchers or salukis) to pursue the hare across the field. The hare is caught and shaken, usually to its death. The coursers see this as “sport” or “competition”, the objective being to demonstrate the dexterity and skill of the pursuing dog – often betting thousands of pounds on the outcome. Facts and Figures More than two thousand calls were received last year in Lincolnshire from concerned members of the public and residents, reporting coursing in progress, or suspicious activity with dogs. The “season” begins with the harvest with fields being stripped and made flat enough for dogs to run. Last year, coursers from as far afield as Sussex, North Yorkshire and Flintshire were dealt with by the force. Many farmers

reported being threatened and intimidated by hare coursers trespassing on land. The Law Since 2005, hare coursing has been illegal under The Hunting Act of 2004. This is a summary offence, which means it can be heard only in Magistrates Court, and can attract a maximum six months in prison and/or a “Level 5 fine”. Police Powers Where there is a need to secure evidence, the police can arrest those suspected of being involved in hare coursing. We can also seize the vehicles and dogs being used, as well as any of the equipment being used in the act (cameras, phones etc). This year, Lincolnshire Police have stepped up their response to the illegal activity with the launch of new drones and off-road vehicles, which will prove useful in gathering evidence to put before the courts. BUC are custodians of a portfolio of assets, the revenues of which are utilised in a number of areas within the Parish of Bourne. The Trustees meet 11 times a year as a body and there are additional meetings throughout the course of the year for members of the subcommittees which oversee specific areas of BUC’s activities. Wherever possible meetings are held in the evening, but there are occasions when meetings are held during the day and you must be in a position to devote an additional 10-20 hours over the year to this purpose. This is an extremely interesting role where you will be able to make a long lasting and positive contribution to the Parish as part of a group of Trustees, helping to ensure that the assets of BUC are properly maintained and that the income generated from those assets is applied in line with the aims of our Scheme which is governed by the Charities Commission.

To be considered for the appointment of Trustee you must: ✓ Be eligible to serve as a Trustee as per the terms of the Scheme. ✓ Be able to demonstrate an interest in the provision of services which provide a general benefit to the inhabitants of the Parish. ✓ We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants who have experience in either Financial Governance or in Property Management, although applicants with other relevant skills will be given serious consideration.
