Introduction
Welcome to Your November Issue. It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m talking turkey, (along with trees, tinsel and trimming-up!), as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This month’s issue features many local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events. I had the good fortune recently to attend the Mayor’s Charity Dinner at the Corn Exchange and be part of what was a marvellous evening of entertainment, excellent food and an impressive boosting of Mayor Paul Fellows’s accumulated charity pot for his very deserving causes. Read this month how Royalty, in the form of The Princess Royal, even rubbed shoulders with our very own Mayor – what good “Sense” that made … (think about it!)
Claire x
As we await “Storm Brian”, (our next meteorological visitor to wreak havoc, following Hurricane Ophelia), I can’t help feeling some sympathy for all Brians out there. Remembering the harmless snail on “The Magic Roundabout”, how on earth can we get cross with anything Brian-like? But wait, there’s dear old Brian Blessed, whose booming voice could blow any house down! Whatever is thrown at us, though, we’re used to it by now, and with this month’s issue of your favourite magazine safely delivered to your door and now in your hands, you can turn your attention to matters, much more interesting than the weather. This month, our spotlight shines on The Willows Care Home in Rippingale, and we feature The Edenham Regional House, along with a key figure associated with it, Canon Andy Hawes. Besides recently announcing his retirement, Andy takes to our “Hot Seat” this month. Enjoy the read … and for all you moustache cultivators, have a magnificent “Mo-vember”!

Mayor
Words from the Mayor Councillor Paul Fellows
So, there I was in front of the mirror practising my bow; I tried the curtsey but it just didn’t look right. Faced with an invitation to meet a member of the Royal Family, Judi and I were determined not to let Bourne down! Princess Anne is the patron of Sense and was visiting their centre on South Fen Road in Bourne. Sense is a nationwide organisation, formed originally by a group of parents of babies affected in pregnancy by Rubella, leaving them deaf and blind. My personal contact with the Princess was no more than a handshake and a word, as she spent all her time talking to staff and meeting the young adults who attend the centre, and some of their parents. These are the people who matter. On the same day that the Princess visited Bourne, Judi and I hosted Bourne’s Civic Dinner. Even though you might say, ‘You would say that’, it was an amazing evening and a jolly time was had by all. A huge thank you to Ian Sismey, Ian Bland and Gordon Cochrane; also to Andy Bister who produced an amazing meal, and the phenomenal Dom Brister for headlining. Westfield Choir, led by Becky Bevis, blew the audience away with “Praise Him” and “Price Tag”, and, although I wish it were not the case, sometimes it is “all about the money, money, money”! This year, any money I raise for my charity will go to the Town Hall Project and Dimension Skate Park, both of which have a realistic chance of coming to fruition, providing everyone digs deeply enough! At the meeting that agreed the plans for the Skate Park, I said that I was ashamed of the provision for young people in Bourne, particularly outdoor facilities, and I am. But huge congratulations to Bourne2Play who are in the process of making something spectacular happen on the Wellhead. Hopefully, both the projects I have mentioned will also give us facilities of which our town can be proud. Judi and I were invited as guests to the Lion’s Charter Evening, and it was a good reminder to us of the amazing work Bourne Lions do, and have done for a great many years for Bourne. They are always keen to admit new members and, for just a few hours each month, the value that someone can bring to the work that the Lions do is huge. Thanks to Maryse Brown and the Lions. So, why not consider becoming a Lion. It’s not about how loud you can roar … but when!

Bourne Mayor Becomes a Hay Hampers’ Packer for One Day Hay Hampers had special extra help in their warehouse recently when Paul Fellows, the Mayor of Bourne, worked as a packer for one day. Having heard about the Bourne based hamper company from the Town Clerk when seeking out hamper raffle prizes for the Civic Dinner last month, he decided to visit Hay Hampers and help out while raising money for the Bourne Town Hall and Skate-park projects. “Other than as raffle prizes, I have never given hampers actually” commented Paul Fellows while packing a line of hampers for Amazon. “However I do give my wife a themed gift for Christmas each year, such as a White Christmas with all sorts of different things that were white. I can see that is very similar to what you do here putting together items with a similar theme and presenting them beautifully to become more than the sum of their parts. Now I appreciate why you are expanding so much as hampers make such easy gifts to give and receive”. Paul Fellows’ visit to Hay Hampers is part of his plan to get to know the businesses based in Bourne better. “We are honoured to have been selected from amongst all the companies in Bourne” commented Gabriele Da Re, Managing Director at Hay Hampers. “We hope that more and more people become aware that we are here so we can attract skilled people and local business”. “I have a confession” said Paul Fellows before leaving “It isn’t my first time as an elf, but it is my first time as a hamper elf. It is great fun here!”

Meet the team at R J Scholes Funeral Service Being part of the communities in which we serve is a key part of Central England Co-operative funeralcare, a perfect example of this is Funeral Director Michelle Meynell and her team in Bourne. Michelle oversees R J Scholes Funeral Service, in Wherrys Lane, and has worked for the Society for over 17 years. She said: “Me and my team see what we do as a vocation rather than a job and we are always here for our community whenever they need us.” Michelle is supported by a team of Funeral Assistants and Funeral Administrators, one of which is David Fawcett who has worked in the industry for over 16 years. David is well-known across the area and is a familiar face in Bourne. He described it as a ‘privilege’ to care for local families. Alex Skellett is the youngest member of the team but is enjoying being part of an industry that is more of a vocation than just a job. Karin Lee believes that her expertise lies in caring for loved ones and creating a peaceful lasting image that clients will remember when they visit the chapel of rest. Terry Dewey joined the team after working as a paramedic and is known across the whole of Bourne. The team is rounded off by Sam King and Lisa Mawhinney, who both are dedicated to enhancing memories and love.
R J Scholes Funeral Service offers a 24-hour service, seven days a week. In addition to arranging funerals, Michelle and her team are also able to offer advice on floral tributes, monumental masonry, funeral stationery, pre-paid funeral plans and probate advice. The team can be contacted on 01778 394687

exercises designed especially for Parkinson’s by Anita Barker, our instructor. We now have a support coffee morning where we meet and chat in Wake House, North Street from 10.00am – 12.00 noon. This informal meet will alternate every two weeks with our normal meeting on the last Monday in the month in the Salvation Army Church in Manning Road from 10.00am – 12.00 noon.
The members of Bourne Support Group of Parkinson’s UK would like to thank the local community and businesses where we draw our membership from, for your generosity in giving and understanding what being diagnosed with this neurological condition means. The population affected by Parkinson’s is 1:500, and our current members and carers in the main come from Bourne, The Deepings and surrounding villages. The donations we receive are put to good use in providing newly diagnosed sufferers information leaflets on many aspects of the disease and its progression. We offer personal support as well and provide contact details such as the Parkinson’s Local Advisor. This year, we have provided a £2,500 donation towards a research project in Cardiff University and £1000 towards getting Parkinson’s nurses provided everywhere in the country. For sums over £2,000 we can choose which project to donate to, provided they are not fully funded already. In general, research is co-ordinated worldwide now to prevent duplication of effort and get maximum value for the monies available. Some research is becoming more promising recently, and we all hope that success is around the corner. We also provide a weekly Pilates class (Tuesday 2.20pm – 3.30pm) in Thurlby Methodist Church Hall, with
This year, we give special thanks to Tesco, Sainsburys, Baker Perkins, Deeping Raft Race Committee, and participants in the following sports events: Brighton Marathon (Emma French); Great Eastern Run (Alison Turner); and Burghley House, Parkinson’s Sponsored Walk (Helen Scar). Finally, big thanks to all those who helped and supported us in the Table Top Sale at The Bull pub in Rippingale and the Strawberry Cream Tea in Bourne Abbey Church Hall. We were also donated funds, in memory of Bruce Tokens, Jack Currant and Keith Battersby. Surplus funds, after we take care of issues such as carer support, etc, are transferred to Head Office where they are used to run the charity, including information booklets, information helpline, etc. The generosity of our community towards those of us who have this disease never ceases to amaze. Tried and tested professional services – all at the touch of a button IT hardly seems possible that Safe Local Trades is nearing its tenth anniversary, with hundreds of satisfied customers leaving over 9,000 local reviews for our tried and tested traders since it began.
of this year, we will be able to meet that consumer demand with our new service to cater for this.
Safe Local Trades is an awardwinning community-focused service, aimed at providing consumers with a reliable and professional service each time they search for a tradesperson – making a stand against the rogue traders and cowboy builders.
The aim is again to provide consumers with professionals, anything from dog groomers to legal firms, who undergo a vetting process, giving you that peace of mind you need when instructing a service.
Following the huge success of Safe Local Trades, demand from non-trade services has led to the establishment of our sister company, Safe Local Services.
What is great about this, as we have seen with Safe Local Trades, is that each service will have its own profile, gallery of images and a chance for consumers to leave their own feedback and review. We have certainly found over the past nine years that consumers trust our recommendations.
Since Safe Local Trades was established in 2008, we have been asked for recommendations on dozens of different services outside the remit of tradesmen and, by end
However, the benefit is two-fold, as professions becoming a member of Safe Local Services will benefit from an already trusted and highly respected service, as well as a

So, mid-September arrived, and the couple, having lived and worked in Bourne for the last few years, fulfilled their dream of opening up this dessert café on Wherry’s Lane, just off North Street. Daniel, who comes up with all the recipe ideas, tries to offer something for all customers, (including gluten-free brownies and waffles), alongside the mouth-watering offerings mentioned earlier, so that everyone feels welcome. From the moment you enter the restaurant, the friendly team want to cater for your every need, and all the early indications are that the good, sweettoothed folk of Bourne are loving it.

Daniel Westmoreland and his partner, Rebecca, saw how the concept of a certain type of restaurant, specialising in desserts and drinks was so popular in America, so they decided to bring their idea to Bourne. He explains, “We would often travel with the kids to Peterborough and treat them to a dessert and we would always say that Bourne needs something like this, suitable for everyone - something different to your local takeaways and coffee shops, and somewhere that not only kids would enjoy going, but adults too.”

Making the Most of Your Crowning Glory! by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
T
his month we are delighted to introduce Chantelle at the Boutique for Hair at Renu.
The harvest may be in, but if your hair is feeling like a bit of a haystack after the summer, this is the perfect time to give it some tender loving care. Your hair is your most important accessory! You have to wear it every day and, whilst flaws in your complexion can be covered by makeup and clever styling choices can disguise any flaws in your figure, the only option with your hair is to hide it under a hat or a scarf. Whether it is colouring, perming, sun exposure, chlorine, styling, adverse weather, hormone imbalances, medication or ageing, our hair will soon tell the story.
Using the right homecare products for your hair is of primary importance. If you have ever wondered why your hair looks so smooth and glossy when you leave the salon but doesn’t feel the same at home, then ask your stylist for advice on the products she has used. They really do make all the difference. Our stylists at Renu are always happy to give you a free consultation to discuss your hair concerns, and give you the best advice on treatment and aftercare. It will lead the way for a host of compliments in time for the party season! The good news is that there is a new salon treatment that can give instant results and rebuild damaged hair in just one treatment! Olaplex is a three-step process which includes a patented active ingredient that works on a molecular level, to seek out broken bonds in the hair that are caused by chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage. You can use Olaplex to restore compromised hair, or add it to another service to provide the ultimate breakage insurance. No.1 Bond Multiplier® - Beginning the Rebuilding - This concentrated first salon step rebuilds broken disulfide bonds and begins the process of preventing damage and repairing hair. No.2 Bond Perfector® - Pursuing Hair Perfection - Our second salon step continues to rebuild and restore any remaining broken bonds ensuring the strongest, shiniest, and healthiest hair possible. No. 3 Hair Perfector Lasting Protection at Home - This final step provides you continuous protection from ongoing damage at home. This hair treatment is usually £15.00, but Chantelle is offering this with all hair bookings with her between November 1st and December 16th for just £10.00!

Control Stress, Anxiety and Panic attacks with Clinical Hypnotherapy Is anxiety sneaking up on you? Anxiety can build up over a long period of time without us even realising it, or it can come on suddenly, as a result of something such as illness or a change of circumstances. Some people who’ve been fully in control of their lives suddenly find they can’t cope in their daily life. Anxiety and stress can manifest itself in many ways: nervousness; panic attacks; insomnia, overly worrying about something that may never happen, etc. It can have a crippling effect by bringing on range of symptoms such as depression, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), skin complaints or negative patterns such as over-eating, drinking, smoking etc. If left unaddressed, stress and anxiety can change lives for the worst. At least one person in ten experiences panic attacks which are often triggered by a stressful or anxious event. A panic attack happens when you experience a sudden onset of intense physical and psychological symptoms. Panic attacks can occur for no apparent reason or a set of circumstances can bring about an attack. You might experience an overwhelming sense of fear, dread, anxiety or apprehension. There are often physical symptoms accompanying these feelings including a change in breathing pattern, sweating, nausea, heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, trembling, or even a difficulty swallowing. Whilst they are frightening, it is unlikely they will cause physical harm, but the self-perpetuating thought of having one stops us from doing the things we want to do or need to do, causing more stress and increasing the potential of having a panic attack. The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a very effective treatment for panic attacks, reducing the frequency in a short period of time, or sustained treatment
will often result in them disappearing altogether. Hypnotherapy reduces underlying levels of anxiety, giving you greater control and reducing the emotional arousal. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious brain templates and makes suggestions in a beneficial and positive way to make positive changes happen in the subconscious. Hypnotherapy allows guided relaxation showing a preferred future and because the subconscious part of the brain, the part that’s in charge of our reactions, doesn’t understand the difference between imagination and reality, the guided relaxation starts to bring calm and control back into our lives. You will learn how to prevent negative stress, how to identify increased levels of stress, and how to deal with the situation and how to prevent it reaching debilitating levels in a positive and responsible way. Whatever the cause of stress, anxiety or panic attacks the treatment is tailored to the individual.

The Demise of Monarch Airlines
Clare Lockett
Travel Counsellor
With the recent collapse of Monarch Airlines, I thought I would write about financial protection this month. I have received many calls from people who have booked directly on the internet and don’t know their rights and who to turn to for help. If you’re affected and still have questions, I hope I can help. Hearing that the company you›ve booked your holiday with has gone into administration can be extremely stressful. It can also be confusing to know where to turn, how your holiday is protected, and what steps to take to make things right. At Travel Counsellors, we believe that it›s important for everyone, not just our customers, to be aware of the importance of booking with someone that they trust, and being clear on the financial protection that they have.
If you booked a flight directly with Monarch. Check your travel insurance to check whether it includes cover for supplier failure. If you paid or part-paid by credit card and the value of the flight(s) is between £100 and £30,000, you can claim under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1979 If you paid on credit or debit card, you can make a claim under the charge back scheme rules (this is not legislative but is a card scheme rule).
If you’ve been affected by the failure of Monarch Group, or you’re unsure about financial protection, then read on.
If you made a Monarch flight-only booking with a travel agent or tour operator.
If you booked an ATOL package holiday directly with Monarch Holidays Limited.
If it was made before December 15th 2016, and you have an ATOL certificate with ‘First Aviation Ltd’ named on the certificate, then you should be ATOL protected and have an ATOL certificate. If you do not have an ATOL certificate, or the booking was made after this date, you are not ATOL protected. Check if your travel company operates a full financial protection policy. If not, you will need to try the insurance or charge back routes.
You will need to make a claim through the CAA and you will receive a full refund. If you booked an ATOL package holiday with another tour operator that included a Monarch flight. Your travel company is obliged to find you an appropriate alternative to fulfil the holiday, or provide a full refund to you. If you booked an ATOL Flight Plus holiday with a travel agent or tour operator that included a Monarch flight. Your travel company is obliged to find you an appropriate alternative to fulfil your holiday, or provide a full refund to you of monies you have paid them for all parts of the trip.

Sacroiliac Joint Problems
by Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath, Owner of the Wellhead Practice
F
ound at the lower end of the spine, the Sacroiliac joints (SIJ) connect the sacrum (a triangular shaped bone at the base of the spine) to each of the larger outer pelvic bones (ilia) to make the pelvis complete. They act as shock absorbers allowing movement and body weight to be transferred in a smooth and controlled manner from the upper body through to the legs and vice versa.
Possible causes of injury: SIJ injuries are not unusual. The more traumatic causes can include a fall onto your side such as a mistimed sliding tackle, or slipping and landing onto your bottom. Less dramatic reasons include repetitive weight bearing activities such as running, jumping, dancing or gymnastics for example. In practice, a common cause is a sudden jolt to the pelvis such as missing a step or dropping into an unseen hole in the ground whilst walking the dog. A rounded or slouching posture can also be a triggering factor. Symptoms: Pain is usually felt on one side of the lower back often localised to the dimpled area just below your waistband. You may feel discomfort in the buttock, lower abdomen or groin regions too. Some patients report a sense that the affected leg feels a slightly different length or that it even drags or doesn’t swing properly when they walk. Occasionally the front of the thigh feels achy or appears to burn if they have been on their feet too long. Rest can be a relief although you can end up feeling slightly stiff afterwards and turning over in bed can be painful too.
Treatment options: In my experience, most SI problems respond really well to manual treatment. Using techniques to decompress or re-align the joints and straighten the pelvis can work really well to restore normal joint movement. Soft tissue massage and stretching can then reduce the localised muscle spasm and encourage a healthier blood flow to the tissues. This helps to drain away any inflammation built up and speed up the recovery. Muscle re-education can then strengthen the surrounding areas or correct any postural imbalances that may be contributing and reduce the likelihood of a reoccurrence. Sometimes a special pelvic belt or sports taping is useful to stabilise the joint for a while. Very occasionally the most persistence may need referring for a corticosteroid injection or further tests.

Habit, Compulsion, Obsession, Phobia.
by Caroline Mentzel, Behaviour management consultant, helpucope ltd
T
here are some things which, as individuals, we routinely do in a particular way, such as hanging out the washing, loading the dishwasher, arranging our books, or hanging our clothes in the wardrobe. Doing things in this way feels comfortable and orderly, although if something disturbs that order it can create anxiety, which we then need to put right. Generally speaking, we can live with these idiosyncrasies and incorporate them seamlessly into our everyday activities. However, sometimes the need for order is so strong that we engage in repetitive behaviour that influences our routine and can even interfere with our mental and emotional well-being. In some instances, this form of extreme anxiety requires medical intervention and support. There are times when certain behaviour patterns become overwhelming and we feel that our life cannot be a positive experience without the comfort that their inclusion brings. This may consist of the need to gather and own specific items or perform specific actions or rituals.
so that the effect upon daily life is minimised. Indeed, I am one of those people, having successfully overcome my own fears of water and of caterpillars! There are more than one hundred common phobias, including fear of heights, going outside, spiders, snakes, darkness, social situations, flying and many more. Living with phobias can cause depression, panic attacks and even thoughts of suicide; however, only about a quarter of those people with a phobia actually seek help. It can become a struggle to balance the needs of behaviour patterns with general life expectations. It can sometimes be difficult for other people to understand these types of behaviour and the impact they have on day-to-day life. If you require help or support, please contact Helpucope for an initial conversation with The Behaviour Transformer.
The dictionary definition of a phobia describes a persistent, irrational, abnormal or intense fear. Phobias can be triggered by traumatic experiences or learned behaviours, and can usually be treated by therapies such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) or gradual exposure to the trigger; sometimes in conjunction with medication. Phobias are real and should be taken seriously. Many people experience one or more during their lifetime, and some learn how to manage or overcome them

Bonfire Night - Advice and Ideas
by Sarah Blyth, Director of Childcare, Chestnut Day Nurseries
B
onfire night will soon be lighting up our skies once again and, for children, it’s one of the most exciting evenings of the year. Whether you’re heading to a local bonfire party or throwing your own, here are some tips and a couple of craft ideas to ensure that it’s a magical time for all,
Bonfire night craft ideas for the family Zooming rocket ● Make a tube shape from card.
What will you need? As with any outdoor British event, you need to take the right supplies and think ahead:
● Then cut round a circle and snip from one edge into the centre and fold round to make a cone for your rocket.
● Wrap up warm – If you’re going to be standing around in the cold, make sure everyone is wrapped up warm: hats, scarves, gloves (especially for holding sparklers) and warm socks are a must.
● Tape on the cone, then snip some streamers (you could use tissue or crepe paper or colourful strips from a magazine). Add glitter or felt pen designs for added pizzazz.
● Stay dry – Packing waterproofs is also a good move, if you’re planning to outsmart the British weather. ● Protect ears – If you know your child is sensitive to noise, it’s well worth investing in a pair of ear plugs or ear defenders to help muffle the bangs. ● Take a buggy – Negotiating the crowds at a fireworks display isn’t easy with children in tow. If you know that little legs are likely to get tired, take a buggy along. ● Take supplies – Don’t forget to take plenty of snacks and drinks, too, unless you’re willing to spend hours queuing for overpriced hotdogs and toffee apples … and maybe even miss the display!
Hand-printed bonfire ● Get those paints open and get messy with this hand-printed bonfire picture. Collect the children’s painted hand prints, cut them out and stick them on to card to resemble a bonfire.

The Willows Care Home - “Home away from Home” The Willows Residential Care Home in Rippingale, just north of Bourne, provides personal care for the over-65s living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Roop Nahil became the new owner in June and, since then, she and her dedicated team have been working really hard to further improve their services. Here, Roop explains her motivation, and the ways in which an already well-established and popular care home, (winner of several prestigious nationwide awards for the care and support given both to residents and to the staff), is becoming an even more attractive proposition to the residents of our local area. “For me, it’s not just a business; it’s much more than that. My own grandmother passed away living with dementia. The last few years of her life weren’t just difficult for her, but it was also a very hard time for our family. To see a loved one’s memory slowly diminish can be painful. But, with the right care from specially-trained carers, they can get the quality of life they deserve, and this is my paramount aim for our Home.” Ensuring that residents feel safe, dignified and at home is of the utmost importance for our staff. We are proud of the food and drink offered to our residents, as fresh local produce is used for the meals, and our cooks always ensure that we have freshly baked goods on offer. Activities are given a very high priority, and we pride ourselves on the range and variety we offer to our

residents; from bingo and alphabet games to arts and crafts. These are not only enjoyable but also aid in keeping the mind active, from number recognition to mind expression. We have started ‘The Sparkle Project’ where our residents are asked if they have a particular ambition that the Home can help them fulfil. It can be something as small as a shopping trip to the supermarket or going for a meal at the local pub or even going for a walk around the village. Our main objective is to provide our residents a “home away from home”. In day to day life, it’s not the big things that matter, it’s the little things. We want our residents to enjoy life to the maximum. “Sparkle” is all about giving them that extra twinkle in their eyes. In the near future we will be organising some charitable events to raise funds for our residents. Finally, we would like to invite everyone to visit and see our award-winning care home and take part in the future events. For more information, visit our website at www.thewillowscarehome.co.uk or our Facebook page. We are currently looking for dedicated carers to join our friendly team. If you are interested, please call O1778 440773 for more information.”

ourne in Business is a club for business people in the area surrounding the town. If you have a small or medium business, you’re selfemployed, or you’re just thinking about starting up your own business, this is the club for you. We have over seventy members, representing a wide variety of businesses, and we provide a regular opportunity to network with others for advice, information or even a bit of problem-solving. We have guest speakers at our meetings. In September, we welcomed Noreen Read who is a Business
Growth Advisor, working for “Business Lincolnshire Support”. Noreen described the sort of support that her organisation can offer to SMEs, (small and mediumsized enterprises), from how to set up a business to promoting it, and how to secure grant aiding to help you grow and develop your business. Stuart Searis was our speaker in October. Stuart runs a business specialising in installing SMART technology into your home or office. His demonstration on how to convert your comfortable sitting room into surround-sound cinema and set the oven to have your post-film meal ready as the credits roll, all at the click of a button was very impressive!
Over the last few months, we have also been visited by representatives from the District Council who have been talking with us about the new strategic economic development programme that is being developed, and in some aspects, has already begun. This has been exciting news and a pleasure to think that our concerns are being heard. Interested in any of the above? Then come along to a meeting, every third Tuesday, at 6.00pm at the Angel Hotel or contact Claire 07837 499061, email: sales@discoveringmagazines. co.uk or Joanne 07951 841333, email: joannedolby@hotmail.co.uk

Protect your Pensions! This is not a Financial Advice column, but family lawyers dealing with finances in divorce come across pensions all the time as one of the major assets from the marriage. Clients often overlook the importance of the pension assets when planning on how best to share the house, the bank accounts and the savings. Older clients who have a retirement date in sight are not so casual about pensions but, even if retirement is twenty or more years away, a pension fund can already have been built up by one or both of the spouses, and needs to be analysed for the purpose of including it in the matrimonial pot. Even those clients who do recognise the importance of pension sharing within a financial settlement, often want to cut corners. This casual approach may be acceptable with money purchase pension funds which can be valued like a lump sum in a bank. But, if there is any element of defined benefits or other complications that are features of most government and some company pensions, a prudent family lawyer will always recommend obtaining a pension actuarial report. Otherwise, it is guesswork as to how much your share will be, and one of you could be very disappointed, the other pleasantly surprised!

Making the Case for Keeping Wills Updated Advice from Richard Wood – Double & Megson Making a will can be a procedure that many people put off. However, making your first will and then reviewing it from time to time can give a person a lot of reassurance about what happens to their estate when they die. A person who does not make a will is exposed to the risk of the Law of Intestacy which may mean that property may not go to the loved one’s intended. This can particularly be the case where the parties live together and are unmarried. There is no such thing as ‘common law husband and wife’ and it is particularly important that cohabitees give serious thought to making wills to protect one another. It is considerably cheaper than challenging an estate for instance, (which has considerable cost and risk). Where a person dies without a valid will, their estate will be distributed according to certain rules and these principles are called the ‘Intestacy Rules’. If a person dies without a will, they are described as an ‘intestate person’. If a person who makes a will but which is found to be invalid, the rules of intestacy also decide how the estate will
be distributed, not the wishes expressed in the invalid will. The validity of a will can therefore also be important. Wills must be properly drafted. Only parties who are married or civil partners, and perhaps other close relatives, can inherit under the Law of Intestacy. Under intestacy, only those who are lawfully married at the time of death count. Anyone who is divorced would not be able to inherit. A person who is only separated, however, would be able to inherit under the rules. In estates of more than £250,000, there can be restrictions on what a married partner can receive. All of us should make a will to safeguard our wishes upon death, otherwise we are risking that those who we wish to benefit may lose out. Some people may make wills to try to assist with tax planning as an additional factor. This can help, especially if the parties can utilise a spouse exception and in leaving their home to a child or children.

Property News
There’s Still Time to Buy or Sell - Leave it to Us! by Philip Bell, Senior Valuer, Newton Fallowell
R
emember, remember the fifth of November because it’s your last chance to tie up a sale before Christmas! Then you can claim that any fireworks displays are celebrating your purchase, and smugly tell your friends and family that it’s all about you. Most of us will assume that the housing market will be going to bed very soon, due to the all-consuming CHRISTMAS, but there are many folks that have wanted to find somewhere over the summer months, but who’ve simply not been able to do so, due to market pressures. So, if you suddenly find you need to get a property sold, we can still make that happen and, as Christmas presents go, a “SOLD”
board, followed by the funds from its completion, will make for a great gift for you and your family. Failing that, if you’re a New Year prepper, we can get you sorted with advice and guidance ready for the big rush, once people recover from the January hangover. Remember, remember that Newton Fallowell can, and will, make your move happen. With the best sale times in Bourne, we’re here when you need us with advice on sales, rentals and mortgages. Stay safe, and have a great Bonfire night!

Single-Tier State Pensions
by Paul Ross, Financial Planner at Landmark IFA Ltd
I
f you are confused about the new changes to state pensions which occurred last April, you may not be alone. The introduction of the new single-tier pension by the government was supposed to make state pensions more simplified. A heavy emphasis was placed on the amount of the new single-tier state pension; £159.55 per week or £8,296.60 annually (2017/2018 tax year). Yet, these ‘simplified changes’ have left many people questioning what they can, and will, be receiving upon retirement. Unfortunately, many people will not receive this amount, and you may be in this category if you fall into one of these three groups: • You are someone who has a contribution (or credit) record of less than ten years by the time you reach your state pension age; • You are someone who would have relied on their spouse’s National Insurance record; • You are someone who is a member of a contracted-out final salary pension scheme between 1978-1988 who accrued a Guaranteed Minimum Pension. Those with less than ten years’ contribution will receive nothing, as will those who would have previously relied on their spouse’s NI record (although there are some protections in place for those who stayed at home to look after children or those who have never worked). For those who are members of a contracted-out scheme, as their pension entitlement comes into payment, the previous inflation-proofing provided by the government is scrapped under the new scheme. Alongside this, there are some other changes that this new single-tier pension brings: the state pension eligibility age is becoming later and later in life, particularly for
women, who have seen an eight-year increase over the last few years; a thirty-five year National Insurance payment record is now required to receive the full single-tier pension; and lastly, there are the newly available “pension freedoms”, which offer new flexibility and choices. It is easy to see why you may not be alone in your confusion. There are however, some steps you can follow which may help you to understand your single-tier pension in more detail. Firstly, you can apply for a state pension forecast from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) at www.gov.uk/check-state-pension. This will inform you of both when you will reach your state pension age, and also how much you could be eligible to receive. Secondly, you should track down any workplace pensions and personal pensions you may have. This could take some time, but the DWP handily supply a pension tracking service at https://www.gov. uk/find-pension-contact-details. It is important to remember that, if you are still confused over any of the details of your new single-tier pension, then seeking the advice of an Independent Financial Advisor could be a good idea, especially if you cannot manage your pension on your own.

Not easily; Windows 10 doesn’t have a ‘turn off updates’ option and I wouldn’t advise it. By turning off updates you will also prevent any security fixes being ‘pushed’ to your system, leaving you more vulnerable to attack when online. When will this happen? The release date is scheduled for October 17th, but it will take many weeks to roll out to end user PCs. Is this likely to cause problems? Despite reports of users having issues with Windows 10 updates, in general the process is fairly trouble-free. Sadly, there are always certain configurations or glitches which can cause issues during or after the upgrade process. These can generally be addressed, but ensure that you are backing up your valuable data as a matter of course.

Gardening
The Potting Shed This month is not as restful as one might think, as the allotment needs a good tidying-up. Don’t leave old crops to rot as they may harbour pests and disease. Also, a priority this month is to give the allotment or vegetable patch a thorough digging over, and spread manure over the surface, and also to manure or compost the bean trench. If you have a soil with a low pH, add lime, but not at the same time as compost as they react together. When the plot is free of weeds, cover it for the winter to keep off the worst of the rain and prevent weed growth; this will also keep the soil warmer when you are ready to plant new crops in the spring. An important task for November is pruning, as fruit trees and bushes have shed their leaves and are dormant for the winter. Also remove any netting from fruit cages to allow the birds to eat insects and eggs. Bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes are also dormant and therefore, now is the time to plant them whilst the ground is not too wet or cold. Prepare the planting holes by digging in good compost or manure and, when they are planted, spread a mulch of well-rotted manure around the base. Other tasks for this month include:● Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing into smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position.

● Leaf mould makes good mulch and, at this time of year, there is plenty to be had. You can easily make a cage to contain the leaves, using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. ● Secure covers over compost heaps/bins. Although the material needs to be damp, winter rain and snow will saturate it and slow the rotting process down. ● Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners, and one such example is www. gardenplanner.suttons.co.uk. ● Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot. ● Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips. Wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness. ● Plant garlic cloves, early “overwintering” broad beans (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions. ● Cover late season crops with cloches.
Happy digging!

WINTER is knocking at the door and, as the elements come calling, so too do the rogue traders! Gusty winds can attack fences and roof tiles, and heavy rain can play havoc with guttering and drains, as the seasons change. And, with unwanted jobs and the expense of fixing them, also come the unwanted cold callers. The effects of the elements, if and when they do their damage, are like magnets to the cowboy traders. Our advice is to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up-front, and more often than not, it will be for work which is totally unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card – if you begin to feel vulnerable or intimidated - and say you will contact them at your convenience, should you need their services. You can then check their contact details, or ask a family member of friend to do so on your behalf. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs, www. safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance engineers, electricians, roofing specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs. However, there are some simple steps to “winterproof” your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare or December disaster: Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks and blockages. They can freeze, expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage. Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in some draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps and faucets don’t leak. Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. Get a boiler service every year. Clear out your gutters, as autumn, leaves can lead to blockages and overflows. Investing in gutter leaf guards could help. Sweep your chimney every year to remove the build-up of dirt and grime from your chimney walls. For more information about the services we offer, visit www.safelocaltrades.com and find a reputable tradesperson in your area. n ov e m be r 2 0 1 7

History
Discovering . . . Eastgate School
- Rex Needle
S
chools in past times were cold and austere buildings yet played an important role in providing a basic education for children although many were dependent on philanthropy rather than state finance for their existence. One of the smallest of these in the Bourne area was the National (Mixed) School which was opened in Willoughby Road in 1857 with classroom space for 200 boys and girls from the Eastgate area who had been attending the National School in North Street [now the local Conservative Party headquarters] which was becoming overcrowded. It was designed by the Stamford architect Edward Browning and intended to give children a grounding in what was then known as the three Rs, reading ‘riting and ‘rithmetic. Philanthropist John Lely Ostler gave the land and the building was financed by donations from wealthier residents and local charities and the official opening was marked with a celebration at the Abbey Lawn where 200 children were given cakes and tea followed by sports and amusements. The cast iron bell in the bellcote at the school came from the Red Hall in Bourne and was given by the Duncomb family who then owned it. About this time, they were selling the 17th century mansion to the Bourne and Essendine Railway Company for use as a railway station booking hall and they decided that this relic from the building would be a useful addition to summon children to their lessons each morning. Religion played an important role in the life of the school from its inception and in the autumn of 1859, services began on the premises for people living in the vicinity. It was also home to a thriving Sunday school and classes for the study of the bible and other worthy subjects were held regularly and well attended. In 1860, for instance, there were 220 children on the register with 22 voluntary teachers.

The school remained popular until the end of the century but closed in 1903 during a government re-organisation of education and the children transferred to the council school in Abbey Road [now the Abbey Primary Academy]. The Victorian building stood empty for two years before re-opening as a full time Anglican mission church serving the Eastgate district and continued in this role for almost half a century, closing circa 1950 and demolished ten years later to make way for new housing. However, the fate of the bell from the Red Hall whose sound became familiar to generations of schoolchildren is unknown. Archive photograph of the school building in 1905 after it became the Eastgate Mission Church.

In the Hot Seat
IN THE HOT SEAT In our Hot Seat this month, we welcome Canon Andrew (Andy) Hawes who, since 1989, has been Vicar of Edenham, Witham-on-the-Hill and Swinstead. He was ordained in 1980 and then served in parishes in Grimsby, before becoming Vicar of Lutton and Gedney Drove End. Andy was asked to come here to develop Edenham Vicarage as a meeting place and place of retreat, now known as Edenham Regional House (and featured in this month’s issue). He has been married to Sian since 1977 and they have five children and, at the moment, twelve grandchildren! A keen sportsman, Andy played rugby for his college and several clubs, including Bourne, whilst many summers would see him captaining the Lincolnshire Clergy Cricket Team, along with the occasional appearance for the illustrious Witham Whackers. Active outdoor pursuits these days involve his little yacht, the ‘Sian Elisabeth’, which is moored on the Norfolk Broads. Andy writes lyrics and librettos for his brother Patrick, who is a composer, and he has also published a book of collected poems and a children's book called “A King’s Ransom”. This multi-talented clergyman has yet one more string to his proverbial bow – he plays double bass in a band called Smuggler Jack!
Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? I was born in Grimsby, and my favourite memory is of Saturday tea-time at my grandparents’ house football results and fairy cakes, the wrestling and Dr Who!
Canon Andrew Hawes
How would you describe yourself in only five words? Irritating, imperfect, passionate and loving.
Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? A man called Bishop John Maund, who advised me on the path to ordination up to my time at Edenham.
If there was one thing which you could change about Bourne, what would it be and why? I’d like the market to have a spectacular revival!
Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? Leonard Cooley, who was my predecessor at

What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”? The best advice is to follow your own dream.

EDENHAM REGIONAL HOUSE
H
idden in the shade of Edenham Church, and screened from the road by enormous cedar and horse chestnut trees, stands Edenham Vicarage – a house with a history that stretches back to the middle of the seventh century. Here, the priests from the Saxon Minster lived and, after them for over four hundred years, a community of Augustinian monks. Since the 1540s it has been home to the Vicars of Edenham who were, and still are, appointed by the Willoughby De Eresby family of nearby Grimsthorpe Castle. In 1989, a young priest, Andrew Hawes, was asked by the Bishop of Lincoln to move to Edenham as Vicar, and, with the cooperation of the parishes and the Grimsthorpe Estate, to develop the house as one of the four “Regional Houses” in Lincolnshire, providing a meeting place, and a supporting role, to churches and voluntary organisations in southern Lincolnshire. Nearly thirty years on, and the House has been developed to provide en-suite accommodation, the much-loved Stable Chapel,
a magnificent summer house with landscaped gardens, a special suite for those guests with mobility problems, and all the facilities required to provide a full catering service. The house employs one full-time and one part-time staff member and is supported by the voluntary work of its Friends Association. It offers a programme of quiet days and days based on different arts and crafts, as well as residential retreats. It is available to individuals and groups who need a working or resting place, and these include work teams and school groups, as well as Christian groups of all kinds. Most guests live fairly locally, but the House does host visitors from all over the world. The House aims to be accessible to all and runs on a system of voluntary contributions – people can give more or less than the suggested amount. The House also aims to be flexible in use and is happy to welcome small groups that other places of hospitality are not able to accept. Visitors are always welcome to come and have a look around; you are assured of a warm welcome. Every Friday, there is a service of Holy Communion in the Stable Chapel at 12 noon, followed by a bring-and-share lunch for those who would like to stay. Everyone is welcome.

Pets and Vets
Bonfire Night - Great Fun - BUT NOT FOR PETS! by Zoe Reeve
I
t’s coming up to that time of year again that a lot of pet owners dread... Bonfire Night and “firework season”! Now is the time to start thinking about how to try and make this time less stressful for your pets. There are many products on the market, but not all will suit every pet. Plug-in diffusers are great, but you do need to plug them into a spot where your pet spends most of their time. Cats that roam a lot may not benefit much from these, and if you have a large house, then you may need more than one of them. If you decide to use these, then plug them in now so they have time to start working before the season gets into full swing. There are now many types of ‘calming’ capsules/tablets on the market, and we have had quite a success with these over the past few years. As with most of these things though, they are not 100% guaranteed to work, but will usually ‘take the edge off’ for most dogs and cats. Start using these now, so they have time to get into your pet’s system; your veterinary practice can prescribe these over the counter.
you read the instructions carefully and these too need to be started a few weeks before fireworks are expected. Try and keep pets inside, which I know is easier said than done with cats. Most cats will want to get away from the noise, so make them a cosy hideaway indoors now, so they can get used to it and have somewhere familiar to hide. This can also apply for dogs. Don’t get angry with any pets that show destructive behaviour, as this will only make it, and their fear, much worse. Rabbits and other outdoor pets ideally should be brought indoors in their enclosures during this season. They can often be forgotten, but these pets are very easily stressed. If you cannot bring them indoors, then make sure they have plenty of extra bedding to hide in. Cover their enclosure with a blanket to shield them from the fireworks, and to try to block out some of the noise. If you are having a bonfire, then please check for hedgehogs and any other wildlife before setting it alight!
Sound desensitization DVDs and downloads have recently come onto the market and can also be great, but they do take a bit of work from you as an owner. Make sure

Police Patrol
Drug Driving
by Sergeant 600 Rachel Blackwell
W
ith more than one hundred people already arrested in Lincolnshire alone this year, this month’s focus is on relatively new, and littleknown methods of dealing with suspected drug-drivers. Roadside Drug Testing – How things have developed. The breathalyser has been used to test for alcohol for years, but until 2015 there was no equipment that allowed for drivers to be tested for drugs in their system. Previously, drivers suspected of driving whilst under the influence of drugs would have been subjected to a roadside impairment test which saw officers looking for signs such as unsteadiness, poor co-ordination, or poor logical or verbal reasoning. In 2015, officers in Lincolnshire were equipped with a simple pocket-sized device that indicates the presence of drugs in a driver’s system, and all from a simple saliva sample. Facts and Figures Three local men were arrested in our area during September on suspicion of driving whilst having drugs in their system, over the prescribed limit. Across the county as a whole, 105 drivers have been arrested during 2017 with the help of the new device.
By putting the tip of the device onto the tongue of the driver, saliva will be analysed and the result displayed within five minutes. If the driver has cocaine or cannabis in their system, the test will show a striking red line, which then sees the driver arrested and taken to the police station. Once in custody, a blood sample is taken and sent away to determine the true amount of controlled drug in their system. With Lincolnshire having one of the highest rates of death and serious injury on our roads, having the technology to quickly and effectively get drug drivers off the road is a positive step in making our roads safer. Penalties If you are convicted of drug driving, you will get: Minimum one year driving ban, (a Boston man was recently given a three year ban). An unlimited fine. A criminal record. Driving licence endorsed for eleven years, confirming that you have been convicted of drug driving. Possible prison term of up to six months. If you suspect someone is drug driving, call 101

Motoring
Why isn’t it safe to use a perfectly legal hands-free phone kit in a car when you are driving?
W
e all know that it’s illegal to drive a vehicle or ride a motorbike whilst using a handheld mobile phone or a similar device. It’s also illegal to use a hand-held phone when supervising a learner driver or rider. Texting and driving has now become a problem too, particularly with younger drivers, (“the text-generation”.)
It is easy to understand why using a hand-held phone is a problem. You have one hand on the wheel and your eyes are off the road, which reduces your general observation ability. Car control is more difficult too, as it is harder to react to a hazard, one-handedly, and your reaction times are longer, due to the visual attention that a phone requires. You are more likely to weave within your lane or on bends, which creates a major hazard. Most drivers, though, are responsible and use hands-free kits, so is using a hands-free car kit safe? Quite simply, it is legal … but the answer is NO! The act of conversation itself is a distraction and, when two people in a car are chatting away, they both have the same view of the road ahead. When the passenger spots complex issues ahead, they probably shut up to
allow the driver to concentrate on the critical driving task. Conversation is a distraction because, if the level or difficulty on the road demands a certain amount of driver concentration, or “cognitive processing”, the driver has to divide cognitive resources to both the conversation and the driving task. If we prioritise a conversation over road safety, we therefore risk having a crash. When you have a conversation using a hands-free kit, the other party is unlikely to shut up as they are unaware that there may be complex issues that the driver needs to deal with. This means that you are more likely to prioritise the conversation, leaving limited cognitive resources for driving. So, the next time your boss calls you to moan about your sales performance, or your mum calls you about your messy bedroom, don’t take the call … better still, switch your phone off !!
